Robert Menard, mayor of Bexiers, France, has been charged with incitement to hatred or discrimination after noting in a TV interview that 91 percent of the students in one class in his town are Muslim. "Obviously, this is a problem," he said. Menard says he was simply describing the reality of life in his town.

It's OK to decry american capitalistic endeavors as a threat to their culture, but not a massive influx of immigrants from a foreign land with no desire to assimilate.

The French aren't Celts, they're Gallo-Romanic-Germans.

Well, the Franks were a Germanic people, not Celtic, but they mixed some Celtic culture in with Roman and Germanic ones. It's why there are so many hybrid traditions around holidays.

Menard, who is the mayor of southern France town Beziers, denied his comments were discriminatory.

"I just described the situation in my town," he told AFP. "It is not a value judgement, it's a fact. It's what I can see."

Clearly he's discriminating. Assuming anyone still remembers what the word actually means.

Sounds more like a case against the "incitement" part.

A funny thing, if you click on the link in the story and scroll down there's another story titled "France: the battle against gender segregation in French suburbs". It's a story about some feminist activist agitating against the "men only" cafes in suburban Paris. The feminist activist is a rather dark-skinned French woman named Aziza Sayah and the track-suited patrons of the men only caf? seem to be somewhat swarthy for native-born Frenchmen - one of them even saying something about how they do things "in our home country". (I can assume they must be Italians.) For some odd reason, they bring up cultural and religious beliefs as well.
