President Obama on Political Correctness: 'Don't Go Around Just Looking for Insults'
In an NPR interview, the president explained the difference between being polite and being politically correct.


During a recent interview with NPR, President Obama was asked if Donald Trump was right: has political correctness gone too far?
"This is a tricky issue," Obama answered. "Because the definition of political correctness is all over the map. I suspect the president-elect's definition would be different than mine."
The president then offered two definitions of political correctness: the first is simply having good manners. It's wrong to shout racial epithets at people, or to verbally harass them. Objecting to abusive treatment isn't an example of political-correctness-run-amok—or if it is, then political correctness is a good thing. Most people probably want to live in a country where people are encouraged not to scream obscenities at each other.
The second definition of political correctness, according to Obama, is "hypersensitivity that ends up resulting in people not being able to express their opinions at all without someone suggesting they're a victim."
He continued:
My advice to progressives like myself, and advice I give my daughters who are about to head off to college is don't go around just looking for insults. You're tough. If someone says something you don't agree with, engage them on their ideas, but you don't have to feel that somehow because you're a black woman, you're being assaulted. But speak up for yourself.
The president went on to point out that when it comes to political correctness, conservatives are hypocrites. They routinely get themselves worked up, and cite offense, over silly slights, as the Cato Institute's Alex Nowrasteh pointed out in a recent op-ed for The Washington Post:
But conservatives have their own, nationalist version of PC, their own set of rules regulating speech, behavior and acceptable opinions. I call it "patriotic correctness." It's a full-throated, un-nuanced, uncompromising defense of American nationalism, history and cherry-picked ideals. Central to its thesis is the belief that nothing in America can't be fixed by more patriotism enforced by public shaming, boycotts and policies to cut out foreign and non-American influences.
Insufficient displays of patriotism among the patriotically correct can result in exclusion from public life and ruined careers. It also restricts honest criticism of failed public policies, diverting blame for things like the war in Iraq to those Americans who didn't support the war effort enough.
It's important to point out double standards. Nowrasteh and Obama are right: conservatives play the victim card, too. That's one big reason that I doubt Trump will follow through on his campaign promise to destroy political correctness. His supporters are just as PC about the kinds of symbolic gestures that matter to them.
And while it's been largely true in the Age of Obama that liberals were the ones pushing political correctness and viciously silencing their opponents on college campuses, PC is not a left vs. right issue. It's about free speech and tolerance vs. identity collectivism and censorship. And there are plenty of right-leaning forces that want to silence their enemies—even with respect to college campuses. Just yesterday, it was reported that a Republican legislator wants to punish the University of Wisconsin for allowing a liberal professor to teach a class on "The Problem of Whiteness." Meanwhile, Turning Points USA has compiled a watchlist of liberal professors saying things that violate patriotic correctness.
"It cuts both way," said Obama. "My advice to young people and to all of us as citizens is to be able to distinguish between being courteous and being thoughtful… versus having legitimate political debates and disagreements."
The president, to his credit, has consistently denounced the excesses of self-victimization on college campuses. Obama's Education Department, however, was a big part of the problem—and one he stubbornly failed to correct throughout his time in office.

Correction: technically, the protection is not "lifetime" for the family of former Presidents, only for the President himself. But it didn't end with the President's term for either Chelsea Clinton or Bush's daughters, and I doubt it will for Obama's daughters, either.

I don't think there's a huge distinction. If you're in a position of power to perhaps change things and all you do is talk about how others should change it, you've earned yourself a share of blame. I have always thought of political correctness is any thought or opinion that adheres to a narrative of social justice and multiculturalism, EVEN when the facts to not support such narratives.. then when stating the facts you would not be being politically correct but yet a truthteller.. is it just me?

The citations for "patriotic correctness" amount to something David Frum once said. FREEDOM FRIES, and not buying Dixie Chicks records. Amusingly, the guy behind FREEDOM FRIES held the very foreign policy position Frum condemned as unpatriotic.
I think a good example of 'patriotic correctness' is the now-universal appendage of a tiny American flag on every political shyster's suit lapel. 'Stubbornly failed to correct' or purposely ignored. He's talked a good game on a lot of issues (transparency, non-interventionism, civil liberties, etc.) and then has done the complete opposite. I think it's on purpose. It explains why he is personally popular, but his policies are not.

I didn't see him scolding the people at anti-Trump rally's which is the only mass movement I can think of people doing this recently other than ball games. Maybe BLM rally's as well.

Obama is, and has been for years, a master of being extremely cautious with his words (and more than a little dishonest and disingenuous) when he knows that he is probably being listened to by a broad, diverse, and mainstream type of audience. In this sort of situation, he is one of the best and cleverest people I've ever seen at saying things that can be interpreted by different people in different ways depending on their viewpoint.
But when he thinks that most aren't really paying attention and he's surrounded by nobody except his fellow radical leftists, that's when he relaxes and lets the mask slip and suddenly his true and uncensored feelings start to come out that aren't intended to be for general public consumption.

I commend the Republican legislator for his proposal. As a taxpayer, I don't want to subsidize "educational" institutions spreading racism. Colleges that offer this kind of classes provide no social value. We, as a society, would be better off if they went out of business instead of brainwashing the youth as they do now.

I really don't have a big problem with basic PC. If blacks as a group want to be called african-american, or whatever, fine. The military, like the police, is very patently not just another government job. But since your examples are not cultural and no one loses their job for your examples (apart from politicians, who know the deal going in and consented), it seems quite clear to me that they aren't political correctness.

Indeed. Military worship in this country is one of the few true PC parallels on the right. Most military personnel aren't combat. It's clerical workers, bureaucrats, and administrators at the DoD just like the DoE or DoWhatever. Even worse. I know an officer who did ROTC, got a non-combat job in which he's basically a glorified accountant (who doesn't know any actual accounting), got stationed in Europe, and basically he is a bureaucrat who takes lots of vacations, gets to retire at like 42 with a full salary, gets a bunch of fucking benefits, will never be anywhere near combat... but, oh yeah, he has to do some calisthenics occasionally. What a hero.

Wrong. Political correctness IS a matter of Left vs. Right-- and specifically, it's overwhelmingly peculiar to the Left. Why? Because political correctness is about cultural issues. If the Right were going around shaming people for sinning, or not going to church, or being an atheist, that would be politically correct. But they are by accident on the high road here, because their opportunity to be politically correct is (ironically) barred by separation of church and state. The University of Wisconsin is a state funded institution. The state has every right to limit what they are willing to pay for in terms of classes. If this were a private school,say, Oberlin, then it would be a "PC" or "Freedom of Speech" issue and should be off limits for the state to regulate.
And it's one flippin legislator, who won't get anything passed, being cited as the example of conservative PC. You'd be hard pressed to find a university administration that didn't serve as an example of leftist PC.
