Did Russia Really 'Hack the Election'?
Matt Welch talks Trump, Putin, and electoral integrity on tonight's Kennedy…and then later on Red Eye
When it comes to Russia's role in America's presidential election this year, I am in a somewhat unusual position. Like Scott Shackford and scores of millions of Americans, I have no particular dog in the hunt for which major-party candidate wins the presidency (my/our preferences can be found here, because Reason is a transparent journalistic institution, unlike 99 percent of our competitors). But unlike most libertarians, my loathing of Putin and of the Russian values he feeds on, as well as my bias-forging experience of living in post-Warsaw Pact states from 1990-97, leads to qualified support for things like NATO expansion (yay Baltics, nay Georgia), and to a lifetime of perhaps-irrational antipathy toward, say, Mikhail Gorbachev.
This background, plus the advent of a Russophiliac president-elect I opposed when I first laid eyes on him, should make me the ideal customer for the Russians-hacked-our-elections theory currently taking the left-half of the mediasphere by storm. Yet my brain cannot quite go where the heart so fervently wants to lead, for reasons summed up by Nick Gillespie this morning when looking at articles by the Washington Post and New York Times based on nameless leaks from the CIA: "neither story actually presents even anonymously sourced information that shows Russian (or even Wikileaks) activity tipped the election."
This is not a small point. You can hate Vladimir Putin's guts (though likely not more than I do), but until there is evidence of him or anyone else changing the results between the moment Americans voted and the moment those votes were tabulated, just what in hell are we talking about here? Unless you see Americans as hapless vessels swayed against their own voting inclinations by leaks of true information (along with whatever fake news was percolating from teenage Macedonians), it's awfully hard to conclude that Russia's one-sided interventions, real and imagined, were anything remotely close to the deciding factor here. Propaganda, from every angle, has always existed; the key is to safeguard the integrity of the voting process. Without evidence of that latter point being degraded, any conclusion involving the recalibrating of this election strikes me as desperate, wishful, and not particularly helpful thinking.
Anyhoo, I talk about this on tonight's Kennedy (Fox Business Network 8 p.m. ET, with a repeat at midnight), along with co-Party Panelists Harris Faulkner and Anthony Cumia. The program will also include interviews with John Bolton and Judge Andrew Napolitano, so do watch the whole damn thing!
Then later in the 3 a.m. hour on Fox News I'll be on Red Eye w/ Tom Shillue, talking the same subject and more with co-panelists Tammy Pescatelli, Tim Dillon, and the libertarian comic Dave Smith.

Once a commie, always a commie. I’m with you, Welch.
His dad was really worried about him.
“”””leads to qualified support for things like NATO expansion (yay Baltics, nay Georgia),””
More warfare welfare.
Eisenhower said that if US troops were still in Europe by the 1960’s then NATO was a failure. Why keep on being part of an expensive failure?
What better way for the Western European nations to seem noble and enlightened than by offloading the costs of their defense to the U.S.?
Someone was here last week whining about Tillerson’s *possible* caving to the russkis, ‘case he’d done business with them.
I finally got that he’s a Euro and when I suggested he provide for his own defense, he claimed the country he lived in spent 2% of the budget on defense!
I guess you wave that in front of the bear and scare ’em off.
I think the idea was the Europeans will fight each other if given half a chance so we should keep them from having any chance to do so. We’ve managed to keep the peace on the Continent for about three times as long as anyone since the Roman Empire, so there’s that.
Getting a free ride from the US on national defense is probably one reason that these European countries can get away with these economically wasteful “social welfare” programs that American “progressives” love so much.
Hey progs, want to be like Europe? Find some world superpower to pay for our national defense, then we’ll talk.
Yay Baltics? Do you really mean that the U.S. should go to war if Russia tries to capture a corridor through Lithuania to Russia’s isolated Kalingrad enclave? That’s what the NATO treaty would require, no?
You mean Konigsberg, a city handed off to the Soviets at Potsdam for no good reason.
It, like much of eastern Germany, was handed over for the excellent reason that FDR for some reason was so seduced by Stalin’s charm that he decided to give him pieces of eastern Europe he didn’t have to, and Truman continued that legacy.
I remember reading about the Yalta conference and feeling sorry for Churchill, who is supposed to be FDR’s closest ally and they’re meeting Russian Hitler, and FDR basically falls in love with Stalin and Churchill ends up playing the third wheel.
There is very little to like about FDR.
Just like it required it if, say, Russian forces moved to help fight riots in West Berlin in the 80s.
What kind of non’interventionist cheers on the expansion of foreign entanglements?
Reason plays real fast and loose with what constitutes a ‘libertarian’.
What kind of supporter of the NAP is opposed to the use of force against aggressors?
Why keep on being part of an expensive failure?
Because only one nation in NATO’s entire history has invoked Article 5 in the organization’s history, and it was the United States.
If you wanted to drop NATO, the time would have been 1992. If you drop out now you’re basically spitting in the faces of every nation that maintained their treaty obligations. People tend to get pissed when their soldiers die for your cause and then you abandon them because “LOL, don’t feel like it anymore, but thanks for the support”.
And that first sentence is why you proofread before positing kids.
Given that treaty obligations include 2% of GDP spending every year, no excuse, and US is the only one to meet it, US should give the Delian League ultimatum. Contribute troops (real troops, not use 2% GPD on defense as extension of welfare state) or contribute money.
I am totally favour of this. It’s just irritating for Americans to go “WHY COME WE STILL PART OF NATO” after invoking Article freaking 5.
*I am totally in favour of this, goddamn I’m Johning it up tonight.
Well, you are a John.
Also the U.S. is not the only one to meet it, Britain, Poland, Estonia and freaking Greece all do it as well.
I was surprised to find UK doing over 2% after all the cuts (page 5). It does include a bit of accounting trickery of course, but within allowed bounds:
Poland and Estonia only recently started spending, because they maybe, just maybe, Russia might be a problem, and they are beginning to realize France, Germany, Netherlands and the rest will sell them to Russians like it’s ’45 again.
Greece spends, but mostly because it’s a) GDP shrunk so hard and b) it’s a good way to get 30,000+ men off the unemployment rolls for 9 months. They have slightly fewer aircraft than Canada, and twice the personnel in their air force!
Least the UK has new carriers coming out. And the “let’s share carriers with the French to cut down on defense costs” plan didn’t go through.
I love those things.
“In order to save money, we need to decommission Ark Royal”.
“We will build a better carrier, though. In fact, two of them! Savings!”
It’s like the battleship compromise from before ww2. Conservatives wanted four, Liberals were prepared to pay for two. They compromised on eight.
Although, to be fair, we can hardly blame the U.K. for keeping up on war pensions when we’re docking troops for their re-up bonuses and letting veterans die in hospitals showers. We’all give the limeys that much!
just what in hell are we talking about here?
Influence. By leaking the truth about the Clinton campaign machine, votes which nominally belonged to Hillary were stolen from her.
How dare we let people know that the DNC was rigged against Bernie!?
Yea, it could have remained a secret if it weren’t for those damn Ruskies!
I imagine if there were any evidence, even the scantest possible fingerprint of Russian infiltration, we wouldn’t be hearing vague concerns from anonymous CIA sources a month later.
If the CIA wasn’t aware this was going on before the election, well before the election, then we may not really need a CIA any more.
I assume there’s been an investigation ongoing since the early hours of November 9th. Seems unlikely they’d wait until the narrative firmed up weeks later to open it up, especially with concerns being expressed by both sides for months prior to the election. So with an investigation presumably in its fifth week, all they have to show for it is unsubstantiated rumors from unsourced officials in the agency. An agency which, like every other federal bureaucracy, no doubt favored Clinton over Trump. So either they’re sitting on or on the trail of a bombshell which will flip the election to Clinton and have said nothing until five weeks later, and then only to tease it a week before the electors cast their lots, or the rumors are front to back bullshit drummed up to serve Clinton’s narrative.
They weren’t investigating when the first email was released and the left started calling Assange a tool of the Kremlin?
That’s a good point. They were probably watching the voting machines in real time. Why not? The Kremlin (supposedly) already embarrassed the status quo candidate with the email hacks. No doubt they wanted to jump all over any signs of interference.
From the Washington Post story
So the story doesn’t even use a single intelligence officer as a source. It’s sources are ‘officials briefed on an intelligence presentation made to U.S. senators’. That could be an aide to a Senator.
In another part of the story, it mentions ‘officials present’ at a secret Senate briefing. Again, NOT necessarily intelligence officials.
Narrative rigging. Figures.
It’s going to be a fun four years.
A little election rigging? Come on, it’s not like it was something huge like the collapse of the Soviet Union.
A little election rigging? Come on, it’s not like it was something huge like the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Editor’s rule #1: If there’s a question in the headline, the answer is almost always “No.”
That’s called Betteridge’s Law
By the way, isn’t Napolitano a real conspiracy nut? He’s not quite a 9/11 truther, but he gets really close to coming as a tinfoil hat guy sometimes.
He’s just asking questions.
Lots and lots of questions.
What IF we really are being manipulated by the Lizard men?
That’s bullshit. I’m not being manipulated, I’m renting brainspace to the lizardmen.
I have always suspected Mr. Lizard of tampering with the commentariat voting system.
No, that’s me and my squirrelly minions.
We control the horizontal.
We control the vertical.
I think he raised questions over WTC 7: not quite the full-blown conspiracy theory but pretty much a distinction without a difference. He also questions the “official” narrative of the JFK assassination.
I can’t wait until we get a Gen X president and we can finally move past the fucking Kennedys.
And he or she will just slack off for four years.
I would write a rebuttal but I can’t be bothered.
Why would we ever get past the Kennedys? We still haven’t gotten past Atlantis, despite the fact that Plato literally made it up.
Fuck you. I believe in my lord and saviour, Aquaman.
*makes dolphin squeaks*
I didn’t know you had a thing for Aqua Velva Man.
SLAP!
Better than having a thing for Aqua Vulva Man.
Hell with that. Namor McKenzie FTW.
Ted Cruz makes perfect sense as the Gen X kid who doesn’t trust “Dad” Mitch McConnell and is striking back at him amidst being a shifty slacker.
Does it bug anyone else that whether we’re talking about Russian hacking or “fake news” that were just talking about speech and everyone has their knickers in a twist because either some leaked Hillary Clinton e-mails or some fake leaked Hillary Clinton e-mails might possibly have swayed some voters in swing states to vote Trump when they wouldn’t have otherwise done so. That’s some awfully thin gruel to swallow. ITs Citizens United all over again with all this panic about how some sort of SPEECH is influencing the minds of innocent voters.
There’s correct speech, there’s a correct vote, and then there’s everything that’s wrong with this country. Which side do you want to be on?
I’m a libertarian. I’ve always been on the third side of the coin.
or some fake leaked Hillary Clinton e-mails
Have the Clintonistas claimed anything like that yet? Could have missed it, but I don’t recall them denying any of the emails at all, other than saying one contains some quote that makes it easy to read wrong.
here you go
The claims are mostly over now.
Turns out that Skynet leaked the emails. It figured we’d all be so busy arguing and second-guessing each other over politics that we wouldn’t pay close attention to actual military and government as it prepared to attack.
Squirrels hacking my comments.
It’s just weird that, if this exact information came out from any traditional media, this would just be good journalism. But the mere suggestion that it MIGHT come from the Russians, even though it’s all information that is entirely factual, is being framed as a threat to democracy.
You’re talking about old school good journalism. Now good journalism is pandering to the left except in the case of NPR, which is doing what the left pays it to do.
That’s a good comparison, although it’s starting to seem more like the Benghazi video all over again. Total misdirection, no proof of anything, just reassurances from Clinton which will eventually be borne out as total horseshit.
AH! Lou Dobbs.
Prediction: HOOPS
In Soviet Russia, elections hack you?
Ha. Chapman voted for Hillary. He should be kicked to the curb.
Russia. It’s nuts. Just heard McConnell in his jeans say, ‘Russia is not our friend’.
And? So you want to talk tough and intentionally build up to a war with them over this? Why in the world would anyone side with the Democrats over this insanity considering where this can lead to?
Just who are the fricken ‘extremists’ here anyway?
If you Canadians would just deny access to your airspace, then the US and the Ruskies can’t shoot missiles at each other.
With ICBMs it’s less “airspace” and more “space-space”.
And since you won’t let us militarize space, for some reason…
Yeah, it’s not rocket science.
Oh, wait, yes it is.
Are you suggesting we need to be the adult in the room?
Are you suggesting we need to be the adult in the room?
Have you seen our Prime Minister?!?
D’oh!
Let’s not be hasty – if he had to chair a summit between Trump and Putin, the shock might do him some good!
We need Mirror Universe Trudeau, a mature and manly statesman of a libertarian persuasion, who spat on his father’s grave and loudly declared that he is his own man.
Mirror Universe Trudeau is basically Trump in a goatee, isn’t he?
Trump wishes he was Mirror Universe Trudeau. Mirror Universe Trudeau is a gentleman and a scholar, a man of dignity and intelligence who convinced the electorate to vote for him with sound logical arguments and high quality academic papers. He successfully negotiated a true free trade deal with the EU. Mirror Universe Trudeau was recently saddened by the death of Mirror Universe Castro, a man so loved by his people for lifting Cuba out of poverty with capitalist reforms that he was re-elected dozens of times.
Hmm? I think you’re confused. Mirror-universe Castro refused to return to office after serving his second term, despite the desires of his people. He retired from public life entirely, living out the last forty-seven years in retirement on his tobacco farm.
I’ve always assumed that Santa’s been the deciding factor, parked up at the North Pole, especially with laser-nosed reindeer moving faster than any missile.
Chapman voted just like Penn? I stopped reading Mousekateer roll-call at Welch.
Having read several of his articles by mistake (fuck you “Reason Staff), I would have been shocked if he hadn’t. Same with Dalmia.
God, fuck…. Democrats just cannot fucking ever take personal responsibility. It’s never their fault they lose, it’s because of someone else! It’s ‘fake news’, ‘the russians’, ‘Citizens United’, ‘The NRA’, ‘Talk Radio’, ‘3rd Party Candidates’, and the list goes on an on.
How about you don’t be so fucking corrupt, nominate the shittiest candidate ever, and completely hose Bernie Sanders.
And no one is saying the emails were fake, just that they shouldn’t have been released. Nixon should have used that line….
Imagine Ollie North saying well we gave weapons but the Russians leaked it! It’s all their fault!
They blamed Jon Stewart, too. Seriously-there were people saying if he hadn’t left “The Daily Show” that Hillary would have won.
oh so they are admitting the Liberal Media and literally Jon Stewart’s ‘Fake News’ could have swayed the election?
Like all progs, they can only project. They arn’t mad about ‘fake news’, they are only made that ‘fake news’ didn’t help them win
Democrats just cannot fucking ever take personal responsibility
Isn’t that one of the core ideas of progressivism?
We really can’t dismiss Andrew Johnson as worst candidate ever and hand the tiara over to Mrs. Clinton just like that.
I bet it was Snowden.
that fucking traitor
Suck it America. The world’s oldest plumber is Canadian:
http://news.nationalpost.com/n…..st-plumber
Jesus. I knew a sixty-something pipefitter, and years of exposure to powderized PVC and pipe cement have pretty much rendered him useless. He’s living off his daughter and her husband now.
And he’s a vet.
“I made the best damn latrine in all of Normandy in 1944.”
Turns out most of the fake news is coming from the left and most of the sensationalistic and biased headlines are in the Washington Post.
I don’t know how anyone can call the Washington Post a legitimate publication anymore.
Good article Matt. You are on the list of good ones.
Yes, I am going to watch.
I just noticed she’s on every night?! I thought it was weekly.
Sociopathic members of the paranoid power class have always lived with a sense that their position is undeserved and illegitimate. They wake up and go to sleep sublimating a fear of karmic retribution. Trump was a shock and the hysteria we have observed since the election – in the last few days regarding Russia – is a glimpse into what dangerous psychopathy we have in the elite.
+1 Hoffer
“Russophiliac president-elect” (small “p” noted) – WTF?
Not wanting to go to war with Russia and estimating that you can deal with its leader is ‘russophillic’. I don’t know what russophiliac is. In any case cut Matt a little slack. Overall the article was reasonable.
Overly obsessed with saying how wonderful Russia is, perhaps?
I think Russophiliac is when you bleed vodka if you cut yourself. It’s a disease that was epidemic among the royal family of Tsarist Russia.
Can’t be. Where’s his Adidas track suit?
In the Bruins-Habs game Gallagher and Krug dropped the gloves. You can clearly read Galla’s lips saying, ‘stand up you fucken pussy!’
TRUMP’S NORTH AMERICA.
#MAGA.
Carey Price should have been suspended for what he did to Palmieri.
I agree. I was at the game and hoped a Devil pummelled him.
He was pretty arrogant about it in the interview after. And apparently the league didn’t require him to be contrite.
One rule for the Original Six, another for the rest.
METHINKS WELCH PROTESTS TOO MUCH ABOUT BEING A COMMIE HUNTER.
Have you seen his glasses and how he dresses? Someone may have grabbed Welch from his McCarthyist roots in 1952 and brought him here.
WRONG. Did you see him in those beard days? Totally looked like an intellectual. And by intellectual you know I actually mean COMMIE PINKO BASTARD.
IT WAS A PHASE, WELCH WAS YOUNG AND DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT COMMIE BEARDS.
Why won’t Welch wink at us? What’s wrong with us that he won’t wink at the viewer? What’s wrong with him?
Trump is like a smart person.
And the Wall Street Journal editorial board understands nothing about business
Welch: CALLED OUT
“Governor Christie agrees.”
Guns in sports stadiums? I honestly think people should just self-police and decide not to bring weapons to places they might get really drunk and angry.
Only if they’re owned by non-cops.
So after guns are allowed in publicly-owned sports stadiums, publicly-owned government office buildings will be next… right?
Uh, if they are no gun zones, THEN HOW DID THE TERRORISTS GET THEIR GUNS IN THERE?
When seconds count, Kennedy is minutes away.
OMG, what’s next? Tabitha Soren?
Matt Yglesias likes economic stimulus unless Trump does it:
http://www.vox.com/policy-and-…..p-stimulus
Fun fact: stimulus is the Latin word for the pointy stick used to drive a mule or an ox. In Latin versions of the New Testament , the word stimulus is translated as “prick” or “goad” in the famous line that “it’s hard to kick against the pricks” (Acts 26:14 ).
“This was the right recipe for 2013 but it’s too late now.”
Fucken dope.
I am convinced that Matt’s pet monkey bangs away on his computer and then forges Matt’s name on whatever incoherent herpa derp he produces. Matt probably has no idea that Vox publishes articles in his name.
Omnesque nos cum decidissemus in terram, audivi vocem loquentem mihi hebraica lingua: Saule, Saule, quid me persequeris? durum est tibi contra stimulum calcitrare.
OT: Trump could reduce poverty among American Indians by reducing federal regulations.
Or they could get off of the res, go to college and integrate into the most successful, wealthy society in the history of the world. Just a thought.
So you want them to become baristas?
I want to talk about Bill’s flannel and vest combo.
File under: too easy
Either Harry Reid has an explosive secret on Trump’s Russia ties or he’s just making things up
Lying liar lies libelously, news at eleven..
The real news is that Vox didn’t jump on that story and eat it up without any dose of skepticism.
“Romney didn’t win, did he?”
-Harry Reid, when asked what evidence he had that Romney cheated on his taxes
Ladies and gentlemen, behold the personification of the democrat party. A craven liar with a long history of telling bald-faced whoppers that his base laps up.
Like he knew that Romney didn’t pay his taxes? He’s a lying POS.
What is Senator Harry going to do once he can’t use the Senate’s immunity to slander laws?
He may actually need to make his lies vaguely understandable enough to get by a biased judge….or maybe just shut his bleeping mouth.
Why can’t I watch Red Eye online? WTF, Fox, are you saving all that material for blu ray?
Back in the day when I worked in the cash vault *shudder* I watched every episode the day after because some hero posted them to youtube under the name hdcontentdump03. This went on for about a year until Fox got around to shutting him down. Congratulations, you asstards, a guy who was spreading your little 3AM show to the masses who otherwise wouldn’t have watched it had his channel shut down to protect your I’m sure terribly important IP.
Oh God, the cash vault. What a nightmare job that was. I picked it up after several weeks unemployed and was happy to be working again for about a week. And then the soulcrushing sadness of the place settled in and I never really shook it until I transferred. I still look back on it with some dread, and this is a couple years later. I don’t know what precisely made it so existentially bleak. Probably because we worked in a windowless building processing a huge volume of cash deposits for corporate clients. The whole day was spent cutting open cash bags under the watchful eyes of several cameras and running the contents through a counter. Simultaneously high stress due to liability and brainless because there was no cerebral engagement with the work. Horrible.
Only two of the people I knew when I started there are still on. But for them the turnover would be 100%.
I watched the same Red Eye videos on the same YouTube channel. I’ve said it before, but that’swhere I learned about Reason from Welch and Gillespie’s appearances. So yeah, it was all downhill after that
My all-consuming love of Imogen Lloyd Webber.

Gentleman, *they do exist.
*I refuse to verify their bonafides. Just enjoy.
On her what, Kennedy? PEANUT BUTTER ON HER WHAT?
So that asshole prof I mentioned in the other thread? Yeah, he went on TV to defend himself. It didn’t go well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeMJpuglHbI
Ouch.
Not only does he say stupid things, he says them very poorly. He’s a great champion for liberalism, if you ask me.
Yeah, but he has a PhD and that means he’s smarter than you, unless you have a PhD, and probably right about everything on every subject, regardless of if in his field of study, or not. Just ask anyone in academia if you don’t believe me. They’ll tell you exactly what I just said.
To be honest, this guy just sounds like all other leftists. He doesn’t even bother to listen to anyone who disagrees with him or to check facts, he just takes that talking point and runs with it. The left have failed to learn in over 10 years that Drudge is a fucking news aggregate site who only links to other sources. They just cannot be bothered to check on things like that, they already know all there is to know.
That was painful to watch.
Whoa… whoa whoa…. I suddenly keep hearing something that I’ve never heard before. What is this Constitution thing the left are suddenly talking about? Is that the dusty old rag written by white racists 100 years ago that they were bitching about for the last 8 years? Surely, it can’t be the same thing?
For Fox, Tucker Carlson is a huge upgrade over insufferable dicks like O’Reilly and Hannity, neither one of whom I can stand to listen to for 5 minutes.
Bill “phone sex” O’Reilly inspires murderous thoughts when I listen to his tripe for more than a few seconds.
O’Reilly is so awful, and the fact that he has a daily hour-long television show is a monument to the poor taste of American viewers.
It’s not bad enough that he’s loud and wrong, but he’s loud, wrong, inconsistent, and hypocritical.
You can’t explain that.
Win.
Worse than Nancy Grace was?
The chest-puffing of O’Reilly and Hannity is hilarious. O’Reilly threatening Sullum to ‘stay away from his kids’ and Hannity’s “I KNOW KUNG FU” bits are just great examples of how massively insecure they are.
The funny thing is that Carlson actually does the same sort of schtick as O’Reilly during interviews, but he’s charming, informed, and turns it around to let the other guy get his point across after a sound drubbing. It then actually makes folks like O’Reilly and Hannity look even worse than one would imagine by comparison.
So long, panel. DON’T LET THE DOORKNOB HIT YOU ON THE ASSHOLES ON THE WAY OUT.
Don’t recall seeing it linked here….
…Matt Ridley owns it own climate change. (@40 minutes)
Good job, Rids!
Some of those ‘who will get our votes’ comments are freaking insane:
Deirdre McCloskey:
“Hillary will merely get us into another idiotic state-building war. Trump will invade Mexico, and then Canada. Seriously, Hillary will appoint civil libertarians to the Court. A good bet is that Trump will lose the Senate for the GOP, and so her appointments will stick. If Trump wins he will appoint literal and figurative fascists”
Drew Carey:
“I wish it were just ideas. But it goes way beyond that. I think he’s a genuine sociopath. And out of love, I sincerely hope that someone close to him gets him the help he needs after he loses this election. He’s got money, a hot wife, a loving family. He should be the happiest, most grateful man in the world, but instead he’s the angriest, most miserable -motherfucker ever. I really don’t get it. But that’s his burden. Let’s not make it ours.”
Points to ENB, KMW and Zach Weissmueller (dammit, get a third name so I can shorten it) though, their comments are solid.
Hillary will appoint civil libertarians? WTF?
This is what you call trying way to hard to be a cool kid. Did they learn this from Reason staff?
Anyone who thinks that can safely be ignored.
The squirrels are attacking me. What did I do to draw their displeasure?
guns aren’t civil. freedom of speech is overrated
I assumed at the time that McCloskey’s comments were over the top snark.
I honestly thought Deirdre was trolling us. Because… that’s the only explanation.
Is that a serious question? Let’s not even play this game. I’m not saying it was space aliens, BUT IT WAS FUCKING SPACE ALIENS!
Sauvignon blanc is shit. Too sweet, almost cloying. Barely a step up from grigio. Viognier is where it’s at. Dry and mature.
Like your women?
I like my women like I like my wine, fleeting and leaves me with a headache.
As long as it’s just a headache and not a VD.
Ok. So I don’t have any education in wine. Because I don’t like it. Now, my wife likes it a lot and knows more about it. But the wine she likes is the really sweet low alcohol stuff like Moscato and other sweet fizzy type wines, especially the reds and roses. Admittedly, I’d prefer a dryer wine, but I’d really prefer none of it.
Admittedly, I’d prefer a dryer wine,
As opposed to a washer wine?
Damn you!
As opposed to a washer woman?
Moscatos and rieslings make me gag. I’ve done grigios for a long time and then sauvs, but I’m gradually upgrading to the club sodas of wine. Viognier is good, it’s crispy dry, still discernably winey but very, very little sweet. But I’m sure there’s an even dryer wine out there waiting for my puckering lips.
He’s not nearly pushy enough.
Never been down to Tijuana. My dad has funny stories about drinking and brothels down there, but I guess we live in a more enlightened era and it’s just not done anymore.
I can’t get a nice feeling from wine no matter the type or how much I drink of it, and I don’t like the taste of any of it.. A couple of beers is better. Not sure why, alcohol is alcohol so they so. But not so much in my opinion. But agree about Moscato being too sweet.
It has good mouthfeel, whatever that means. I like the taste of it, not just the flavor but the buttery sensation of it. Beer is good and mellow or good and harsh or a cold splash of refreshment, but wine is indulgent.
Nor am I Hyp. I make my own from my muscadine vines. I didn’t know you were supposed to drink the stuff. I just cook with it. It is very tasty stuff and packs a kick but it’s sweet and will give you one hell of a hangover. Whiskey, gin, vodka or gtfo.
Yeah, I’d suggest not drinking it. If you could drink enough of it to even get a buzz, I’m sure a hangover would be guaranteed. I mean my wife gets drunk on 4 glasses, but I would have to drink 10 bottles, lol. I like beer, but I don’t drink it often because of all the calories. I prefer vodka or gin, much cleaner, less filling.
I actually like Pinot Grigio and Riesling, but not so much Sauvignon blanc or Chardonnay. And those sweet wines like Moscato are horrid.
I hate chardonnay. No idea why. It’s flat, like what you’d expect “house wine” tastes like. It’s the cardboard of wines.
When I went over to my niece’s college graduation party last June, my sister and her husband did red meat on the grill. For wines, they had — Chardonnay, Moscato, and white zin.
If I had known, I would have brought a bottle of shiraz or something.
Ew. I’m not big on reds, in fact wholly ignorant about reds, but if I’m not drinking beer it’s cab sauv for steak.
I enjoy table wine.
Moscoato is good in small doses. Riesling is the best wine there is.
I agree about Sauvignon and Chardonnnay. How do you feel about White Zinfandel? I like it.
What about Pinot Noir? It has the coolest sounding name. Who cares that all wine tastes like grape juice that someone’s cat pissed in. I can stand around a counter at the local liquor store and ‘taste’ some wine and be a pretentious jackass. I really like tasting some wine, like 4 bottles right after dinner. I am gumby damnit, I’m supreme!
All this fucking wine talk and no one mentions Malbec?
Although I tend to never add anything is real substance here, I’ll second you on Malbec being also my first choice (excellent with a marbly and charred rare steak)
“Riesling is the best wine there is”
This. I don’t care that there are crappy sweet versions of it popular among soccer moms. You can get great dry Rieslings too and theyre always reasonably priced
Sauvignon blanc can be incredibly good, but you have to be selective. Most California stuff is godawful; you might have better luck with sauv blancs from places like New Zealand, Chile, and Bordeaux.

My, the squirrels must really love sauvignon blanc!
Speaking of Chile though, I have been impressed with South American wines of late. California is overrated.
Oh, my. Tomorrow will be two-thirds Reasoners.
Ok Reason, the performance on mobile has gone to hell. Whip those interns.
Activists Hold Unintentionally Hilarious ‘Funerals’ for Dead Turkeys at Whole Foods
It’s not food, it’s violence. I see. Aren’t these the fruitcakes that think it is unnatural for humans to eat meat? What’s a Clovis Point?
Yummy, yummy violence.
So hungry.
So, someone went and filmed a documentary about Hit ‘n Run commenters.
Good lord. You know what’s the saddest thing about this? The unshaded lightbulb hanging from the ceiling.
That’s hilarious, I was thinking the exact same thing!
You’re right.
You’re so right.
Yvan eht nioj you dumb bastard.
I thought you were speaking Esperanto for a second there.
I am not sure that isnt a spoof. It is funny though.
Oh no, my friend.
Let me lay some of his wisdom on you:
Good fucking God. Please can we stop idealizing Europe. Fucking Christ, technocratic planned economies are wholesale failures. And our progs want to emulate them here.
Look, bagger, if Europe wasn’t so obviously superior to the USA in every way, then explain the mass exodus of American citizens leaving for Europe! Oh wait…
Say what you will about Frenchmen, Spaniards or Italians, I refuse to believe they have fallen so low that they don’t take initiative with women.
That is pretty pathetic.
Holy Gods, how pathetic.
I am reminded of the OWS’er that posted a complaint on their site that he owed 300K for his masters in oppression studies and ‘Corporate America doesnt appreciate his academic accomplishments’.
We are stuck with all of these brainwashed idiots until the day they die. Dead. Fucking. Weight.
Fuck, I’ll speak for welfare in this case. More of them on it, fewer of them in HR departments. Every corporation has to have one, and they are literally made for SJW graduates.
Of course, the punchline is that guy’s 3 degrees are in physics, engineering, and management.
I’m now listening to this because I need to know HOW THE FUCK.
I’m four minutes in. I want to kill him, you and myself, in any order.
OMG HE GOT TO THATCHER!
In practical fields related to the hard sciences Phds are not sought after. In business MBA’s are or used to be sought after, but in engineering a bachelors plus a passing grade on the pro engineer’s test is the most desirable. A Phd is the kiss of death.
But it should at least give him a start as a pharmacist or something, no? I mean, Geology – they still have an oil industry. They are now exploring frakking. Good God, man! Do you drop your pants and assert dominance in the interview? HOW?
If you read the comments to the video, you’d have your answer: the globalist immigrant feminist spicniggerjewfags stealing all the chemistry and sex jobs from God fearing white men like him.
No we were into doxxing.

You would say that, you effete elitist.

Clearly Reason only promoted Gayjay so they could defend Trump with the caveat, “I have no dog in the fight”. Not fooling me, Welch.
BLOOP BOINK BLOP DERP!
Do you know why, you dumb fucks? Because there is NO FUCKING CIA assessment on Russia hacking! Washington Post is NOT the official spokesperson for the CIA! STOP MAKING SHIT UP!
I see now, I’ve finally realized what fake news is. Projection.
Did any voter need Russia to tell them Hillary is crooked?
OT:
Randy Barnett dissects “progressive” premature victory lap
File this under the ‘reasons why Trump won’ or ‘Hillary might’ve been even worse’ categories.
Basically, in May, when Hillary was ‘sure to win’, leading Harvard constitutional law scholar Mark Tushnet wrote an article contending that after her victory, progressives should do everything they can to ram their agenda through, regardless of the constitution, and with complete disregard for the rights of the citizens, especially ‘conservatives’, whom he describes as losers in the culture war and argues should be treated basically like German POWs after WW2.
Barnett, a libertarian, basically turns his argument on its head for ‘conservative’ justices, though urges greater respect for the actual constitution than Tushnet ever would.
Seriously, read the excerpts of Tushnet’s article Barnett quotes. It’s pretty damned frightening. Overt disregard for rule of law and individual rights. No veil, no fig leaf. Tushnet reads like some Rush Limbaugh made caricature of a leftist. But this guy is a ‘top constitutional scholar.’ Sigh.
Well it’s Harvard so…
Tushnet beats his breast about how weak and vacillating his side has been in confronting the evil conservatives. It’s time to Get Tough!
If enormous changes the legal Left has already put through qualify as as weak and vacillating, then I really don’t want to know what getting tough would look like. Hopefully we don’t have to find out.
I’ve heard law professors/students talk about ‘legal realism’ a bit (read: legal nihilism), which Tushnet embodies, and how the law profession needs more of it.
I haven’t spent much time around lawyers or law professors since my undergrad days, so I can’t speak to its prevalence, but I got the impression then that legal positivism and the ‘indeterminacy of law’ (or legal ‘pragmatism’) were all the rage among the academics, like the legal equivalent of postmodernism. My fear is that such attitudes will trickle into common practice via the students of these professors.
Some an-caps like it, not as a thing to pursue, but as a realistic explanation of how a monopolistic legal system always works, regardless of what the judges in it might think of their own decision making process.
I disagree with that assessment at least for common-law, but it’s not completely crazy.
Look, adding up the various media narratives, we get this:
It was the white women, and James Comey, and the Russians, and the Electoral College, which conspired together to make Trump President and deny Hillary her rightful place on the throne.
Don’t forget libertarians. I really need to feel I was part of that as well.
That’s funny, libertarians weren’t mentioned at my meeting of Opus D…oops, never mind.
Illuminatus!!!
Hello, touch my body, always be my baby, all night long. All night long.

They can finally do “Endless Love” together.
This might be a little off topic but…
If I sell a friend an uninsured vehicle that he never gets to make payments on because he wrecks it a week later, still using my plates, and he gets carted off to jail – is the insurance company suing me going to win? Is it worth hiring a lawyer?
If an insurance company is suing you, you may wish to consult an attorney.
Did you sign the title over?
Yeah, if you don’t own it I don’t what’s the issue.
I don’t *see
Wait a minute. You just said the vehicle is uninsured. If it’s uninsured then how can your insurance company sue you? You mean the people’s insurance company who he hit in the accident? Yeah, I think if the vehicle is still in your name and uninsured, you’re on the hook for the damages. Unless your’re an illegal… I mean undocumented alien. Then you just change to one of your other aliases and forget about it.
He’s not your friend any more, is he?
Vote (recount) charts show Trump wins PA WI MI.
MI was close enough that had all the Stein votes gone to the hag, she’d have won. PA and WI ‘s counts would have required all of Johnson’s votes go to here (riiiiiiiiight!):
http://www.sfgate.com/news/art…..790522.php
Does today’s HnR have a more punchable face than that in your link, of
“Ilann Maazel, lead counsel for the Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein campaign”?
No I was gonna hold the title till he paid it off.
Sounds like you’re gonna find out how good a friend he is.
Too late I guess, but never do that. Why would you want to be liable for whatever your friend might do with your car?
Oops. If the you own the title, whatever the car does you will share in liability for — unless your municipality has dramatically different laws than where I’ve lived.
Step 1: Get a lawyer tomorrow morning.
Step 2: Whenever you sell a car in the future, transfer the title and file the paperwork immediately.
Signed,
One who knows
You loaned your BMW to Matthew Broderick?
Or Ted Kennedy?
Learn the difference between a lien holder and a registered owner next time. If it’s “your plates”, yes, you need a lawyer.
Friends and money, oil and water.
Okay, I don’t have anything to say here that hasn’t already been said, but DAMN am I surprised at the salty ham tears still flowing from the left. I mean, it’s a month after the election concluded, and I figure, okay, maybe everyone’s just going to get over it and we’ll move on and maybe talk about what could realistically happen in the next four years.
Hahahahahaaaaaaaano. The tears keep flowing! But let me tell you, it has not been good for the salty ham tears market. Plunging since the morning after the election. I’ve got orphans stocking my root cellars with all the yummy surplus, though, ready for the lean times ahead.
Seriously, though, is this collective nationwide temper tantrum the best tantrum ever? Or the bestest-best tantrum ever?
I said that people would be surprised at how long the tantrum would last. Don’t forget that the lefties STILL whine that Bush used the Supreme Court to steal the election in 2000 and that was 16 years ago.
We’re going to get 4 years of Prog freakout…about every single little thing that a President Trump does.
I’m hoping that, rather than move to Canuckistan, they stamp their feet and hold their breath until they pass out (and damage the ol’ think-bag more than it has already).
And the straw-grasping is only going to get more desperate:
“Motion rejected in Electoral College suit in Colorado”
[…]
“A federal judge has rejected a request for an immediate injunction in lawsuit by two presidential electors in Colorado filed as part of a strategy to block Donald Trump’s election.
The ruling ? by Bill Clinton appointee Wiley Daniel ? delivers a crushing blow to the Hamilton Electors, a group of Electoral College members pursuing a strategy to convince presidential electors across the country to unite behind an alternative candidate to Trump.”
http://www.politico.com/story/…..ado-232539
Pathetic…
They really are going to try everything humanly possible to stop him from swearing in. Hopefully even more of the less crazy people will get turned off to progs from all this.
Well seeing as how I sold the vehicle for him to live in and the impound yard has a lien on the vehicle, the only thing he’s going to own when he walks out of jail will be the cloths on his back. I’m confident he’ll stand by the truth that he bought it but had yet to pay for it, but will it absolve me of liability? I may well be out on the street with him for as much as they think that vehicle was worth.
Get a lawyer.
I don’t think so, if you sold it to him you should have signed the title over, otherwise, still your property.
Is it too late to report the car stolen and tell the cops you’ve never heard of this guy?
Haha, kidding, kidding…
Anyway, concerning this Russia story, I bet there are, indeed, hacks involved.
CNN, NYT, WaPo?
For starters.
“Why is San Francisco traffic so bad? Uber and Lyft are to blame, says city”
[…]
“According to the San Francisco Examiner, some 45,000 Uber and Lyft drivers are now working in the city. By comparison, a mere 1,800 taxi drivers cover the same turf. A national study of traffic estimated that San Franciscans spend an extra 37 minutes each day stuck in traffic, a number that has been steadily rising since 2008.”
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/…..791265.php
Fun with numbers!
Uh, any guess as to how many private cars might not be on the street? And I’m sure the dim-bulbs at the SFMTA assume all 45K are on the road 24/7.
Lefties hardly ever disappoint in proving a lack of brains.
This entire Russia story is all based on hearsay. Every time I try to chase down a link it ends in speculation or anonymous sources.
You can stop trying. There are no links. Just check the CIA webpage, it lists all their statements. It’s not there, surprise. Why Reason is even bothering to report on this garbage, unless to heckle it, I have no idea. But then again, they were following the scary clown epidemic, so I guess it makes sense. Next up, space aliens.
As clickbait it’s done pretty well. There are a shitload of comments across at least three separate threads.
You could be more honest yet:
“Dem losers grasping at last straws; no evidence”
They really don’t mention it anywhere on the CIA page?
Wow, that’s slim information. So basically, it’s just “WaPo/NYT/whoever’s ‘source’ within the agency says…”?
Has the CIA actually released an official report? As I understand it the FBI has distanced itself from the CIA’s supposed conclusion, saying that they neither agree nor disagree with it.
What part of the phone book are the free lawyers in?
The same part that has free food.
Here.
Well, if an insurance company is taking you to court and you can’t afford an attorney, maybe you can get counsel? Not sure if that only applies in criminal court.
“What part of the phone book are the free lawyers in?”
Sam, if you have no assets, who cares? Turnip juice ain’t blood.
But if you have any assets, hire a lawyer. You ended up in a fairly complicated mess there, and free legal advice off the web ain’t gonna cut it when the judge says ‘where did you get that information?’
“Sam, if you have no assets, who cares? Turnip juice ain’t blood.”
Not being flip here; many years ago, I owned a used car, had $50 in the bank and if I was flush, had a lid. I got sued for something someone else did.
Hired a lawyer for a $X initial consultation. He said “you’re judgment-proof; pay me the $X and tell ’em to get lost’.
I have a hunch. You probably do too.
Naah, really?

In a great victory for feminism, Wonder Woman Will No Longer Be UN Ambassador
Well, at least someone has their priorities right.
UN should go full troll and start “Randi Harper: Face of Feminism” campaign.
So a character whose backstory is that she is actually a ambassador and advocate for world peace can’t represent the actually UN because she has big tits.
Seems legit.
*actual
*actually an ambassador
Damn my Amazonian fingers.
Not only that but she’s white and has an ‘impossible’ build. IMPOSSIBLE I TELL YOU!
She’s Greek, so she’s not White white.
All Europeans are white but some Europeans are more white than others.
http://www.bing.com/videos/sea…..&FORM=VIRE
I can’t decide which stupid to side with
-stupid that makes a cartoon character a US Ambassador
-stupid that can’t abide how said cartoon character is drawn
And I used to think I’m a connoisseur of stupid…
Ambassador? Dude, Lurch is Secretary of fucking State!
UN Ambassador.
Kingdom for edit button etc.
The drawing at the top of the linked article is one of the better renditions of WW, I must say. Those breasts look pretty muscular.
It’s because she has a lasso that tells makes you the truth, and if there’s one thing the UN hates it’s the truth.
Brutal. Savage. Rekt.
“Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent ‘warrior’ woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit,”
Was this a complaint or evangelism?
And why is the character’s race relevant? Nevermind, I just give up.
“…the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit,”
Were they drooling when they said that?
I can just imagine them striking ‘luscious’ from the “large-breasted” part, trying to keep their attention on the letter…
Read it in its full context.
Hell, I started masturbating just typing that out.
So did THEY! And then, panting, they all signed the letter…
“You might also like the following playlist: White Ass”
Good, the UN sucks. My girl needs to tell them to fuck off anyways.
The story starts out sad, becomes freaky, and is then ruined by a gross child.
What exactly is her rehabilitation team doing to work on improving her sex life?
Maybe she should just take a tylenol? /Obamacare
Because none of you alerted me to this, you are the biggest faggot ass in the world biggest pussy. My Dick is bigger than yours. Which isn’t saying much.
If calling a gay person a fag is a hate crime, i think everyone @ the Duplex bar Happy Hour is ripe for prosecution.
At this point, I’m convinced Susan Olsen is a regular here.
I posted that days ago CJ
Obviously your dick is bigger than mine.

My last late-night link, and it is probably the funniest thing you’ll see all week.
I’m struggling to get through it because I keep pausing to laugh.
Highjacked.
Destroyers and usurpers, curse them!
how do the html links work? This guy reminded me of Howard Dean working himself up into a frenzy and then yelling like a lunatic. I’d link it but it’s too long 😛
He is George C. Scott in the beginning of Patton.
It reminds me more of Lord Haw Haw
Judging from the avatar I assume it’s a character, but how is he any less worse than Alex Jones, who is also playing a character? The entire video is funny, but from five minutes on its ridiculous.
“Russian scum!”

this “resistance” schtick comes off as blustery and motivated…as though there’s some ‘action’ forthcoming…. but the underlying feeling is that he has no fucking idea what to do except whine on twitter while the world collapses
On 28 May 1945 Joyce was captured by British forces at Flensburg, near the German border with Denmark. Spotting a dishevelled figure while resting from gathering firewood, intelligence soldiers ? including a Jewish German, Geoffrey Perry (born Horst Pinschewer), who had left Germany before the war ? engaged him in conversation in French and English. After they asked whether he was Joyce, he reached for his pocket (actually reaching for a false passport); believing he was armed, they shot him through the buttocks, leaving four wounds.
Accidents happen in wartime.
Bet the other POWs had a good time with him.
You know, because he had five assholes.
That….that…shouldn’t have given me an erection.
A candidate for Sperglord 2016 that we didn’t even know was running the race. If anyone can beat him before the year is out, I’m going to be really surprised.
That was seriously funny.
“What Silicon Valley execs plan to tell Trump this week”

Musk translation: ‘That so-and-so might cut all my subsidies, and I’d have to go earn a living!’
Time to short Tesla?
Do you have a time machine?
So is the pornstar still pursuing her sexual-assault allegations against Trump? ENB hasn’t updated us on that story in a while.
Seems all the thousands of wymyns who had their pussies grabbed by Trump have found it not in their interest to pursue the matter. And all the press and broadcasters who were all set to provide coverage have somehow found it more interesting to question if Putin is a really, really bad guy! Or maybe the ELECTORS! Or, uh,…
There is probably a message here, and I think you know what I mean…
October surprises are ok when the good guys do it.
We only care about questionable associations and possible manipulation of the electorate when it comes to the stories that hurt Clinton.
RUUSSSSSSIAAAAAAAAAA
Backstory: CCSF has been a political football forever; the ‘board’ is filled with political has-beens and those hoping to build a political rolodex on the votes of 5 of their friends.
It was nearly un-accredited a couple of years ago, mores the shame. It has a history of hiring lefty instructors un-employable elsewhere (?! In CA?!), ‘suggesting’ that the ‘students’ pay tuition (40YO ‘students’, ‘studying’ , oh, ‘confrontation control’; all scare quotes intended and deserved).
It was saved from the non-accreditation scare by some miss-steps by the agency, and the populist ‘free education for all!’ SF whining.
So, after all that:
“CCSF can’t prove it taught 16,000 students, must pay $39 million”

Unfortunately, in November, enough ignoramuses pulled the D lever to fund a new tax for that disaster; can we ask for a recount ’cause Russkis?
In case anyone is still up, I found a montage of Yawn Vanity boasting of his kung fu prowess, and holy hell is it funny. The part where he’s talking to a Navy SEAL is priceless (48 s mark).

Oh, and as for the poor sap HM posted about above, his last comment on his video has a ray of hope:
“BREAKING NEWS…This is the last comment I will post here”
Not sure where HM posted the link, but some blogger is capping BREAKING NEWS?
Is this some presumptuous twit like trueman, assuming the world is awaiting his/her latest worthless post?
Breaking News
I got one more:
“Trump selects Tillerson for State, dismissing Russia ties”
http://www.sfgate.com/news/art…..792215.php
Uh, what “dismissing” is required?
And then we have the scroll:
‘If chosen, he would be the most dramatic example of Trumps preference for wealthy outsiders’
So wealthy insiders who have never done anything other than give speeches and sell access are preferable?
I think the Secretary of State whining might be the final nail in the coffin of legacy media. If they’re stupid enough to push the angle.
See: Foundation, Clinton
I think we’re going to have four years of the left desperately searching for a way to litigate Trump out of office, the way that the right did with the Obama birth certificate thing.
Meanwhile, Trump has pleasantly surprised me twice in as many weeks. He objected to spending $4B to replace the 747s he’ll fly around in, and he stated the obvious about the F-35.

Matt seemed really bitchy last night. And Harris, damn.
That was my next question… ’cause I have no idea.
Oh yes they can.
You don’t remember the Apple vs. FBI story?
For months it was all about whether or not a judge should mandate Apple giving them access. Then there was this leaked story about how the FBI secretly asked some Israeli tech company for help. A few days later, “We have successfully gained access to the iPhone and no longer need Apple’s assistance.”
In summation, some private Israeli company did in days what the FBI couldn’t in months.
She winked right at you.
Reading the car article you linked to this morning. Good read so far.
That wink practically knocked me out of my chair.
Like, I guess.
Yes I did fratello.
I agree with him. People should be free to make that decision to, if they’re planning to be drunken louts, not bring heat. But the decision should be the person’s.
I honestly don’t care one way or another if they want to make it legal. But I’ve seen too many drunks doing too many stupid things at sports stadiums. Typically, if I’m going somewhere I’ll be drinking heavily, I won’t pack heat-because drinking leads to bad decisions. Drinking alcohol at a sporting event where your team might lose and make you really mad can especially lead to bad decisions.
Just police yourself and don’t bring your handgun, is all I’m saying.
I WOULD TOTALLY SHOOT YOUR FACE OFF RIGHT NOW but the Pens are up 4-0 so I’m happy drunk.
And yet the shits who complain about hacking still want to force backdoors into all sorts of electronic equipment.
See, I wouldn’t drink alcohol at a sporting event.
Then again, for the most part I’d rather be at home either listening on the radio or watching on TV.
I don’t carry either, but then, I’m in New York, where it’s rather more difficult to get a permit.
I sometimes tailgate. Like, once a year, maybe. But alcohol prices in stadiums are so ridiculous that I won’t purchase them there. It’s way, way too expensive to try to get drunk on stadium alcohol prices.
I don’t drink beer anyway. (I’ve mentioned it several times, but I’m one of those freaks who doesn’t like carbonated beverages.)
*narrows tab*
Except there was no running here.
I’d like to do several things with Kennedy
