What Trump Can Do for Us
Will a ridiculous president encourage Americans to take the presidency less seriously?
"Not my president" is the theme of the protests that have been staged in dozens of cities across the country since Donald Trump was elected last week. I share the sentiment.
Trump will not be my president. But neither is Barack Obama, and neither were any of the eight other men who have occupied the White House since I was born.
The phrase "my president" smacks of subservience, as in "my liege," "my lord," or "mein führer." In our constitutional republic, the person selected for the job that Trump will assume on January 20 presides over the executive branch of the U.S. government, not over you or me.
If there is an advantage to electing a preening, petty, thin-skinned, whiny, vindictive, vacuous, mendacious, boorish bully to that office, it may be that he prompts a reconsideration of the absurd hopes and cultish veneration that surround the presidency. Perhaps a ridiculous president will encourage Americans to take the presidency less seriously.
Then again, the deference that is reflexively given the office could rub off on Trump, who is no less buffoonish today than he was on the morning of November 8. Already we see signs of strange new respect, as harsh critics of the authoritarian huckster swallow their revulsion and wish him well.
Chicago Now blogger Brian C. Thomas confesses that "there is a large part of me that wants to drop my pants and flip the double bird to much of the national Republican Party and the people who voted for Donald Trump." But he argues that "being an American demands we respect the office of the President."
How so? "I don't want this country to fail," Thomas explains. "Rooting against Donald Trump—now that he's president—would be like rooting against the country."
But Trump is not the country, and depending on the policies he pursues he can do more damage by succeeding than by failing. When it comes to disrupting trade and immigration, for instance, I will unabashedly root against him. That does not make me less American.
Trump, an open admirer of foreign dictators, presented himself as a strongman riding to the nation's rescue. "When I take the oath of office next year, I will restore law and order to our country," he said at the Republican convention. "Beginning on January 20, 2017, safety will be restored."
That promise is delusional not just because it requires impossibly quick and effective action but because crime control is not a federal function. It is not the president's job to police neighborhoods or arrest criminals.
Nor is it the president's job to "run the economy," a task for which Trump declared Hillary Clinton unsuited. He has no such qualms about his own abilities. "I can tell you this, and I can say it with certainty," he said in a campaign video. "I will be the greatest jobs-producing president that God ever created."
While promises of crime control and job creation are staples of presidential campaigns, Trump's persona highlights how ludicrous they are. The guy who brags about sexually assaulting women is going to restore safety? The guy who brought us Trump Steaks, Trump Vodka, Trump: The Game, Trump Mortgage, Trump University, Trump Airlines, and three bankrupt casinos is going to foster successful businesses?
When it comes to fiscal policy (an area where the president does have some influence), it is hard to put much faith in a guy who promises to cut a $78 billion expense by $300 billion and to eliminate the $19 trillion national debt in eight years while increasing spending. Even when it comes to foreign intervention, one area where Trump promised more restraint than Clinton, it is hard to trust a man who falsely insists he was always against the war in Iraq.
For those who see the president as a savior with the power to Make America Great Again, Trump's presidency will deliver a salutary lesson: Lower your expectations.

He can launch an anti-immigrant campaign with door-to-door urban warfare. He can round people up and kill them. He can start WW III. Other than that you're right. Nothing to see here. Move along, people.
Teh noooks are already a-flyin'! ZOMG!!!!!one11!eleventy!!
ZOMG indeed.
By round up and kill, I think you mean put on buses for deportation. But you're silly, hyperbolic bitch so.........
That makes no sense. Why would Trump deport killers and drug dealers and gang members especially right after just saying they will cross right back over the border? And right after saying we don't yet have a wall to protect us?
Sounds like he is going to be the FDR
If you believe that bullshit, then, given the fact that Mr. Obama has already deported as many as Trump is promising to, with the same standard for deportation, you have to believe that we already exist in a state of door-to-door urban warfare.
That would require consistency in his thinking.
Not to mention consistency in how deportations were reported before Obama took office, and how they were reported after he took office.

If there is an advantage to electing a preening, petty, thin-skinned, whiny, vindictive, vacuous, mendacious, boorish bully to that office,...
Quick, someone find Jacob a safe space!
Describing someone accurately is a sign that one needs a safe space?
Pretending as if these are qualities unique to Trump and not shared by at least a century's worth of his predecessors as well as his opponent for the office is what's supremely annoying and dishonest. The feigned paralyzing anxiety about what Trump may do contrasted against the relative indifference to actual atrocities committed by past holders of the same office. Particularly when Trump's proposed policies are not distinguishable in any meaningful way from what has been completely mainstream political thought and policy at various times in the last 30 years.
You know what would be great? If Trump turned in a perfectly average performance as president. Because it would not only accomplish what Sullum describes here, taking some of the mystique and fanaticism away from the presidency in the public consciousness, but because it would make the peddlers of this apocalyptic claptrap look like precisely the gibbering morons that they are.
The "gibbering morons" are the ones who voted for, supported, or defended the least qualified and most sociopathic narcissist ever to run for high office in the US.
Obama?
Yeah. Remy totally covered this.
New boss, old boss, something something.
Hillary?
This.^ Maybe it's just because I'm an over-the-hill old fart, but I've seen this movie over and over again for decades now. It's a shitty movie but it always has been.
We're going to see the difference quite soon enough. Perhaps fucking morons like yourself might even notice.
There will be crises. But if you think they're any different from what we've experienced in the past then you've no sense of history.
You're like the ignorant little snowflakes parading around in the streets thinking that they're just like the Civil Rights era protestors, unaware of the very real risks and violence those people had to face. You wankers think it's a calamity if you can't connect to Snapchat.
And have you had a president send you into a war zone that he refused to call a war zone, for bullshit reasons even he didn't understand? I have.
Go crawl back into your safe space and eat some more Play-doh. The adults are talking.
There's the false equivalence baby-talk whence I got my fucking moron characterization.
I hear baby-talk, I call it baby-talk. You're flailing like a child convinced that there's a monster under his bed.
Does this mean that Tony understands that rooting for the President to circumvent the rule of law and Congress for 8 years might have some unintended consequences?
Naaah. That would be unpossible.
Go fuck yourself, lefty. The only good thing about Trump's win is that you assholes lost and lost big.
And that'll do quite nicely.
The worst movie except for all the other ones? That's the kind of a hinking that got me "sky captain and the world of tomorrow", so be careful.
You are, as usual, spot on. However, the spin of President Trump's average performance would be something something checks and balances something top men in Washington something something figurehead president something bipartisanship. Ergo, we reigned in the president
That describes nearly every president in my lifetime, with possibly the exception of Ford.
...The last eight years have prepared us for more of the same.
What'd I win?
I'm hoping Trump won't be making stupid short-sighted political decisions for 'optics' to pad his 'legacy'.
If there is an advantage to electing a preening, petty, thin-skinned, whiny, vindictive, vacuous, mendacious, boorish bully to that office, who isn't particularly obsessed with policy...
FTFY. Either way the vote went, we were getting stuck with a preening, petty, thin-skinned, whiny, vindictive, vacuous, mendacious, boorish bully.
Really. That description perfectly fits Obama. Was this originally published in 2008 with the name changed ?
If he would have added narcissist it totally would have described Obama. So we're minus one negative adjective. I was hoping for 2 or 3 but . . .improvement?
I have to admit I am somewhat baffled that someone who worked so hard to end the drug war would turn away when new wars and witch hunts are started right in front of their eyes. Seriously people there is more to life than killing each other.
YOU TAKE THAT BACK!
Not at all. I have been quite concerned about Clinton's "war on guns", and Clinton's "war on the 1%", and Clinton's "war on privileged white males".
I think it's funny how you quote me as if I could both change my own comment and not change yours.
We think it's funny that you continue to comment on this site, considering you've had your ass handed to you so many times.
Atilla the Hun, Tamerlane, Pol Pot, Hitler, and Stalin would disagree, and who are you to argue with these people?
If you haven't tried setting your browser to replace words, this is what you've been missing.
Well done, you.
1/4 of this country elected DT. If Hillary won only 1/4 of this country would have elected her as well. At least 3/4's of this country are armed. Our government is skating on thin ice.
Jacob, why don't you tell us how you really feel about Trump.
Trump is not this madman that you and the people like you openly accuse him of being. Like all presidents, we have zero idea what they will actually do in office until they do something or nothing.
You people are scared because you cannot expect a famous person turned politician to do some good things as president. I really hope Trump does, with the help of Congress, appoint good constitutionalists to the SCOTUS, make taxes easier, lower illegal immigration, turn our foreign policy to non-interventionist, repeal ObamaCare and renegotiate trade deals. If he does- great. If he does some of those things- great. If he does tyrannical things- we will fight him. If he does none of those things- he will be a one term president.
(contd) The reason why the Trump supporters are willing to put some trust in Trump to fix some issues is because many of our politicians are corrupt and/or unwilling to reform the mess that is DC.
I hope Rachael Price comes knocking at my door to offer me a blowjob. I'd say the probabilities are equal.
Excellent choice by the way.
"Trump is not this madman that you and the people like you openly accuse him of being."
You should say that Trump is *probably* not a madman.
At this point, nobody really knows about that guy.
"You people are scared because you cannot expect a famous person turned politician to do some good things as president."
I take it you didn't think much of Ronald Reagan?
Ask not what Trump can do for you
But what you can do for Trump.
Have a Trumptastic day.
Sounds like you have a case of the Trumpdays. 🙁
Let me ask you something. When you come in on Trumpday and you're not feeling real well, does anyone ever say to you, "Sounds like someone has a case of the Trumpdays?"
No. No, man. Shit, no, man. I believe you'd get your ass kicked sayin' something like that, man.
I thought Trump's first act would be to change Friday to Trumpday. Part of a devious psychological warfare tactic aimed at the Left. Everybody loves Friday so by changing it to Trumpday everyone will soon love Trump. At least the ones who survive head-explosion syndrome.
Kind of like Clinton then. Unlike Clinton, Trump has little chance of putting his bad ideas into practice.
Bitter tears from Sullum are unbecoming.
For someone who doesn't take the president that seriously, you sure are taking him pretty seriously.
Given how ridiculous many of them are, and how seriously they take themselves: No. That part is more likely to get worse.
Trump, an open admirer of foreign dictators, presented himself as a strongman riding to the nation's rescue.
Hillary took enormous buckets full of money from foreign dictators and presented herself as a strongwoman riding to the nation's rescue. For me, it's like the closing scene in Animal Farm: I look from the humans to the pigs, and then from the pigs to the humans, and I just can't tell them apart.
No, everyone still seems to think Obama's a solid guy. I know, I don't get it either.
What Can Orange Do For you?
You...you're good.
Great, now I will never drink orange juice again.
Or perhaps a ridiculous president will cause a global recession, start wars based on false pretenses, peddle in anti-science and anti-intellectual mumbo-jumbo with an agenda, and continue the unbroken 50-year pattern of Republicans not improving the country or planet or any human life by any measure. Only this time he doesn't even have any relevant experience and is a mental case.
Hillary lost, we dodged that bullet.
Only to step in front of a shiny brass cannonball.
A yuge, classy, GOLD-PLATED cannonball, you mean.
the unbroken 50-year pattern of Republicans not improving the country or planet or any human life by any measure.
This is an impressive bit of overexaggerated pants-shitting, even for you.
Then surely you can name one good thing Republicans have done for this country in the past 50 years.
They made you go insane. That was pretty sweet.
I'm not playing this game. Any example is just going to be countered with "well they just took credit for events outside of their control," "that was actually terrible because it had some detrimental effects and/or runs counter to my priorities," or "the Democrats deserve credit for that for some nonsensical reason." Being a blind partisan means losing any semblance of intellectual honesty.
Regardless, plenty of people will do better under this presidency than under a Hillary one, which completely destroys your thesis.
The only way to win is not to play.
'Relevant Experience' generally doesn't help a candidate if it's literally a string of failures and cover ups. Even in the realm of personal disgust with their personalities they were essentially a tie. Anything disgusting Trump was accused of, Hillary's current husband had also done. They were equally terrible in my view pretty much across the board, and Democrats shot themselves in the foot something fierce when they ran the wife of the only sitting President to be formally impeached since 1867.
The upsides to Trump I'm hoping for:
- He's a legendary cheapskate who won the campaign while spending less than half the money Hillary did. I hope he governs like Calvin Coolidge and vetoes wasteful spending like Governor Gary Johnson.
- He's expressed doubts about expensive pointless foreign adventures.
- He's seems the natural enemy of bureaucrats, regulators, and lobbyists. Here's hoping he does his best to take a chainsaw to all the unnecessary Departments and Agencies.
- He promised tax reform including getting rid of our ridiculous efforts to collect income tax on foreign operations.
I know I'll be disappointed but if he does even half of this, I'll tolerate quite a bit of preening.
I can't really pick out the thesis of this article.
In the Reason Who Will Get Our Votes? article, you said:
Do you still stand by this statement? Do you believe that Trump will fumble against the checks and balances of the system, or he will continue the tradition of the last Presidents of expanding the power of the executive unchecked? This article sounds really alarmist, but your previous position sounded almost as if you wanted a Trump win specifically so the nation could have this conversation.
Oh pshaw. Not one positive thing has ever happened under a Republican-led government. Never, ever. For anybody.
Don't you animals understand what you've done? YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! DAMN YOU! GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!!
+1 Krieger
Reason is close here but not quite. The point is not that Trump is a ridiculous President. The point is that he won't be a ridiculous President and that will be a very good thing. What drives the cult of the Presidency is the idea that government and the Presidency in particular is some kind of special job that only the anointed elites can handle. That of course is horseshit and counter to everything good and right that this country was founded upon.
The reason why the media and the political class was so terrified of Trump was not because they thought he would be a bad President. They may have thought that but that is not what scared them. They will love it if things go badly for Trump. It would give them a giant I told you so. What scares them is that he won't be a bad President and people will realize that if this guy can be a decent President, a lot of people can and realize how incompetent, self serving and stupid our political class and their media toadies actually are.
There is no possible way he will be a good president or even a moderately nondestructive one. At some point you have to reenter reality and realize that when you hire a mentally ill incompetent for the most powerful job in the world, disaster will probably ensue.
The mistake was in creating that "most powerful job in the world" in the first place. Anybody who has the sense to crack a history book once in a while will realize how that's going to go wrong sooner or later.
You were probably giddy with delight when Obama talked about circumventing Congress with his pen and his phone. You no doubt figured the pen and the phone would be in "progressive" hands forever and ever. You don't seem very giddy now. Apparently you are experiencing a reentry into reality.
Don't worry, Tony is immune to reality. He'll be fine.
His shrill klaxon of alarmism is quite a bit more annoying than AmSoc's sneering condescension.
I honestly don't know what they hope to accomplish. Is the idea that interest in libertarian politics by outsiders due to this race will cause them to investigate us and the likes of Tony and AmSoc will convince them to stay away from us? I think that the sneering and mendacity aren't good tactics in that case. They'll clearly convince none of us that way. They surely want to convince themselves that we're here to gobble the nozzle of the pumpkin-in-chief-to-be. Is it as simple as with-us-or-against-us tribalism and this is their impotent attempts to throw spears our way?
Any way we slice it, it's tedious as fuck.
Fun fact: the Spanish Empire lasted for over a century following the 35 year reign of someone who can literally be described as an inbred retard. I think it will survive being run by a thin-skinned nepotist who has been running large organizations for nearly half a century.
*I think the US will survive etc
I heard there was no possible way he'd even be president.
From many people on this board, in fact.
I'm just happy that we don't have Hillary, or her moral preening on a national stage.
DT ain't going to be great shakes but it will be interesting to say the least.
::reads Sullum byline::
We're gonna need some wipes and a new pair of pants over here, stat!
So, if there is an advantage to electing a preening, petty, thin-skinned, whiny, vindictive, vacuous, mendacious, boorish bully to that office, it may be that he prompts a reconsideration of the absurd hopes and cultish veneration that surround the presidency
We're nearly to the end of his second term, and I see little evidence for optimism.
The guy who brags about sexually assaulting women is going to restore safety?
Between you and Rico, I don't know which one is more anxious to get a libel suit slapped on them first.
The guy who brought us Trump Steaks, Trump Vodka, Trump: The Game, Trump Mortgage, Trump University, Trump Airlines, and three bankrupt casinos is going to foster successful businesses?
You mean the guy that's built a multi-billion $$$ business empire with a few failed ventures thrown in the mix isn't going to foster successful businesses better than any dumbshit that's spent his/her entire life sucking at the government teat?
HURRY UP WITH THOSE WIPES AND PANTS OVER HERE. THIS ONES A BIGGER MESS THAN EXPECTED.
here is no possible way he will be a good president or even a moderately nondestructive one. At some point you have to reenter reality and realize that when you hire a mentally ill incompetent for the most powerful job in the world, disaster will probably ensue.
Does it hurt when you pull stuff like this out of your ass?
"Perhaps a ridiculous president will encourage Americans to take the presidency less seriously."
Hahahahaha, no.
Also, lets stop calling politicians our 'leaders'. They are not, and were never intended to be our leaders. They are supposed to be our representatives.
In terms of eroding the prestige of political office, the question is not simply whether it will happen, but rather: would fewer Clinton-critical lefties have fallen in line, than will Trump-critical righties? Statistically, I have to bet that Trump is a win in this respect.
Seems pretty clear he wasn't praising them as dictators, he was praising them as leaders that serve their country's national interest instead of putting logically inconsistent ideology before national interest. Which is what the last two president have done to catastrophic results.
We can only hope.
I think it will at least be more-entertaining
I'm not a fan of Trump outside of the antics of the Hat and the Hair, but
"The guy who brags about sexually assaulting women is going to restore safety?"
Saying "women will consent to anything if you have enough cash" is a crass thing to say, but it's hardly "bragging" about "sexually assaulting women".
"The guy who brought us Trump Steaks, Trump Vodka, Trump: The Game, Trump Mortgage, Trump University, Trump Airlines, and three bankrupt casinos is going to foster successful businesses?"
We're motherfucking proponents of the Free Market. We literally WANT to see a world where a thousand different businesses can be tried, some succeeding and some failing.
"We're motherfucking proponents of the Free Market. We literally WANT to see a world where a thousand different businesses can be tried, some succeeding and some failing."
Yeah, I'm actually a little confused about that bit myself. Are we really channeling Bernie here with nobody needs more than one brand of Vodka? Good catch!
"Perhaps a ridiculous president will encourage Americans to take the presidency less seriously."
Well if Clinton, Bush, and Obama are any indication... no...
Maybe the effect will be to get people generally to be taken more seriously.
Ask not what Trump can do for you, but what you can do for Trump.
RE: What Trump Can Do for Us
Will a ridiculous president encourage Americans to take the presidency less seriously?
Let's face it.
We've had so many ridiculous presidents the past decades that the (intelligent) voters have already taken the presidency less seriously.
RE: What Trump Can Do for Us
What Trump can do for us is:
Help eliminate Obamacare.
Eliminate the income tax and replace with a fair tax.
Pull out all our troops overseas.
Lower (or better still eliminate) to five percent.
Privatize social security.
Eliminate all needless and useless beaucracies (SP) and social programs at the federal level.
Pull out of the UN.
Help terminate the treaty with Iran.
Implementing these policies would be a good start.
He's already got people at the EPA and NASA looking at retiring or quitting. That's the start of what may end becoming a very positive trend for the country and he's not even in office yet.

Well, my copy of the constitution reads something about federal courts; congress passing laws, the executive creating an administrative method of enforcing them, and a judiciary to determine guilt and punishment within the context of the passed law.
He could leave me alone.

Always look on the bright side of life.
Life's a piece of shit when you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke is true.
If you feel it's all a show, keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you. And...
It's painful trying to read an article that relies so heavily on name calling to bolster an argument.
Best regards,

BambiB, I tend to agree with you, but it depends on how little "even a little bit" is. Let's have some clarity:
(1) greatly simplify the income tax, or -- ideally -- replace it with a national sales type tax
(2) get rid of many rules and regulations
(3) create an orderly and just process at the US borders
(4) repeal Obama care / replace with individual Healthcare saving accounts
If Trump were to accomplish two of these, I'd say he'd be a successful President. Three of four, wildly successful. Right?
