This Is the Least Important Election of Our Lifetimes
Don't believe the hype.
During the 1864 presidential race between Abraham Lincoln and George McClellan, The New York Times published an article that contained this sentence: "We have had many important elections, but never one so important as that now approaching." Though there may have been some truth in this claim, three years into the Civil War means the Times was probably one election too late.
In any event, every candidate or publication that's made comparable declarations since that time regarding the presidential contest being the "most important" election of their "lifetime" or their "generation" or "in history" or "ever" is completely full of it.
That goes for Gerald Ford, who in a debate against Jimmy Carter claimed that the 1976 election was "one of the most vital in the history of America." As it turns out, that was a contest between an accidental president and a highly ineffectual future president. And it wasn't even the most important election Carter would participate in.
It also goes for Walter Mondale, who in 1984 told a crowd, "This is the most important election of our lives." (Ronald Reagan lost a single state to Mondale, and the outcome was never really in doubt.) It goes for John Kerry, who in 2004 said, "My fellow Americans, this is the most important election of our lifetime." It goes for Joe Biden and Barack Obama, both of whom claimed that 2008 was "the most important election in my lifetime." It goes for Newt Gingrich, who said it in 2012. It goes also for the media that acted as if what they said were true.
It certainly goes for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, neither of whom possess the requisite talent, vision or charisma needed to destroy this country in a mere four years. Yet on Tuesday in Dade City, Florida, Clinton finally stated what many in her party (from the president to students to 96-year-old Roger Angell) have been saying for months: "I believe this may be the most important election of our lifetimes." For her, yes. For the rest of us, not so much.
Judging from the histrionic rhetoric we hear daily, most people believe this is the most important election ever. Did you see the meltdown leftist media had after Clinton's ethical tribulations again threatened her chances at the White House? You'd think attacking Clinton were tantamount to attacking the very foundations of "democracy."
Partisans always seem to believe that everything that happens to them right now, at this very moment, is the most important thing that has ever happened or will ever happen to humanity.
Yes, government's increasing involvement in the economic and moral lives of citizens has made political stakes high. It's true that 2016 features the two suckiest candidates probably ever. It's also true that our collective vision of the American project has frayed, perhaps beyond repair. With the intense scrutiny of contemporary political coverage, more people are invested in the daily grind of elections, which intensifies the sting of losing. This anger compounds every cycle (although winning brings its own disappointment with its unfulfilled promises).
That's not to say our constitutional republic isn't slowly dying. It probably is. This condition isn't contingent on an election's outcome but on widespread problems with our institutions, politics and voters. Whatever you believe the future of governance should look like, one election is not going make or break it.
In fact, when it comes to policy, it's far more likely that very little will change over the next four years—perhaps even less than changed with the election of Obama, who had two years of one-party rule before Republicans took back Congress. Last year, Bloomberg Businessweek ran a column headlined "Why 2016 May Be the Most Important Election of Our Lifetime." Like many other similar pieces, it argues that as our politics become more polarized our elections become correspondingly more significant. But our growing divide might be exactly why 2016 turns out to be one of the least important elections in our lifetime.
If providence (or dumb luck) takes mercy on the Constitution, Washington D.C.'s gridlock—an organic reflection of the nation's disposition—will remain the status quo.
Actually, what am I talking about? That's exactly what the Constitution was built to do in a divided nation. The situation will render the next president weaker than most and somewhat contain his or her authoritarianism and poor judgment.
This kind of frustrating environment is likely to cause more recrimination and, unfortunately, abuses of power that are meant to circumvent the congestion. Still, overall, it's better than partisan unilateralism. The situation will not change until we find competent people to put into the White House or politicians with ideas that have some crossover appeal. That time is not now.
Of course, none of this is to completely diminish the importance of the presidential election. Obviously, voters are making a decision about the future of governance. Judges are at stake. Foreign policy is made. There are consequences. But if the republic can't survive a bad executive, then it's already dead.

You don't get it. It's pre-war Germany. Trump is a modern day Hitler. TrumPutin will start WW III. Yes Hillary is terrible but she's learning. Trump heralds the Trumpocalypse.
He gets it. He wrote this article specifically for you.
The lack of sleep from tossing and turning all night long due to the tightening polls is having a deleterious effect on poor Weigel's already highly fragile mental state. He should probably be put on suicide watch.
Why? So we can watch?
Greatest post ever.
My best friend's ex-wife makes $95/hr on the laptop. She has been unemployed for 6 months but last month her income with big fat bonus was over $15000 just working on the laptop for a few hours.

Excellent sarc.
That's the way I read it too.
It's impossible to know for sure.
Yesterday, AD was calling the effort to investigate Hillary a 'witch hunt'. So I'm not sure he's joking.
Well, he's pretty seriously mentally ill.
If he actually thinks Hillary Clinton is the persecuted party in this story, then he definitely is screwed up.
I've been told that.
Then I've been told to get on the right side of History (Herstory?).
I then I remember this little ditty from 'Caberet'.

You know, you're getting an 8.9 from the East German judge.
So Trump is Putin's lapdog servant but at the same time will start WW3?
Trump is literally a danger to the future of the planet and will throw his weight around fighting Russia but the Russians want him in? Not a lot of rational though in that
I think Trump might lead to something good. Maybe when the legislative or executive branch want something that requires the other's consent, the answer will be no. Gridlock is the best we can hope for.
That's the most ridiculous assertion you'll ever make in your life.
You need remedial therapy which should include 'The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich' by William L Shirer
Tldr, but I can guess the summary: we're fucked either way!
Honestly, no matter who wins ~30% of the population will be apoplectic. And another 10% quite angry. Journalists seen to think things will be normal afterwards. The divisions are too wide and there is no communication between the sides.
Hillary will stack SCOTUS with a bunch of communism enthusiasts. That seems pretty important to me.
Hey, it's not like that will have a long-lasting effect on the country or the rule of law or anything, so it's really not all that important.
This is probably true. But if the Supreme Court is all that stands between us and whatever horrible things we imagine, then we're already fucked. Elections only confirm what's already happening in the culture and politics.
We were fucked once Wickard was decided. Since then it's just been a matter of how quickly things would proceed to the end.
This^. Anybody who thinks that the downfall of this country was because of Boomers or Hippies or Gen Xers or Millennials is a moron. The Greatest Generation was a bunch of fucking statists, and their Progressive Era parents were the ones that dismantled the constitution.
This
Very true.
At this point, it is...
...and we are.
Tldr, but I can guess the summary: we're fucked either way!

Squirrels agree: 2016 blows syphilitic goat.
Dead syphilitic goat. Not even the goat gets to enjoy it.
The republic may very well be dead no matter who wins, it's become corrupt and rotten to the core. Clinton might put a stake through its heart with a few terrible SC justices and terrible economic policy while Trump might just pet it too hard. We're divided and hate other anyway and, to be honest, I'm beyond giving a damn.
The good news is that progtards are cowardly weak creatures. I told one of them a civil war might be coming if Hillary steals the election. It told me that police and national guard would protect it. Which is why I know we will win a civil war with these creatures. They will depend on people who don't really support their villainy. As cops and soldiers tend not be progtarded Marxism enthusiasts.
It's only the most important election ever if the country does something important like elect Gary.
Otherwise it's just more of the same
If there is a God, and he or she does in fact love this country, the outcome might be a dead heat with neither of the horrible candidates gaining a majority [this will require Johnson to take at least NM] and it goes to the House to pick the next president. If that is Johnson, there might be hope, though Democrats will cry foul for a hundred years and react as though another Republican stole another election. Such is my fantasy.
There is zero chance the House hands the Presidency to Johnson.
I'm not an admirer of Andrew Breitbart but he said that "Politics is downstream from culture". He got that right.
If America is fading it is because the culture is deteriorating. The top-down, "control everything from one central place because when left alone everything falls apart" view of the world is crumbling and we are witnessing its demise. While that portends a better future, the death of that old way of thinking may well take America with it.
Remember, the only country on earth that defends the rights of free speech and bearing arms is the US. A silenced, disarmed world is the future, at least for the short run. Long term depends on how people react to speech codes and helplessness in the face of criminals.
I think that is a very important insight. It's what I try to tell my friends who think that Trump means the end of the world. If we are in a place where things can get as bad as they imagine (and I think they way overestimate the dangers of Trump), working extra hard to beat him (or Hillary) in the election isn't going to change that. If we are in a place where a particular horrible candidate could be elected, it's because the culture is already there. Who wins this election doesn't change any of that unless you have an absurd degree of faith in top-down government control of everything.
the only country on earth that defends the rights of free speech and bearing arms is the US.
and one of the candidates is on the record repeatedly as having a serious problem with the latter. Neuter it and the former is so much window dressing. But no, nothing consequential going on here.
To be fair, Hillary wants to gut the first amendment as well.
Well, she will rep,ace all that with COLLECTIVE rights. So we will have that going for us, eh comrades?
just a few years ago, the anti-gun crowd was considered by the pro-gun crowd to just be misguided and fearful fools. The focus was on "assault weapons", plastic guns, criminal access, background checks and things that the pro-gun crowd were open to discussing. It was a political/policy debate.
Now, the anti-gun crowd is considered to want nothing short of complete disarmament. Clinton openly talks about confiscation as a policy plan. The pro-gun crowd is seriously asking themselves what happens if it gets to that point? How far will it go? When a significant portion of the populace is stocking up on arms and ammunition, it is quickly reaching the point when discussion and debate may start failing.
but yeh, nothing of consequence. As if this has ever happened before in the US.
If every single one of you has not considered Having to fight in an armed conflict against the progs to preserve your rights, then get ready to lose them.
Is it really possible that no one here can grasp that an event can become 'the most important' over and over again if it's a recurring one?
For Lincoln v McClellan it was most important because an election of McClellan would have been a repudiation of the war
For Ford v Carter it was the preservation of the process
For Mondale v Reagan it was the survival of old line Democrats
For people in each of these scenarios it WAS the most important election of their lifetimes so far.
This election?
Well, it will decide the balance of the Supreme Court. It could be a major slap in the face to the GOP. It could be the end for SJW nonsense. It has already exposed deep corruption in the DNC and their allies in the media.
So, for a lot of people, it will legitimately be the most important election of their lifetime so far.
This election may decide the fate of the Clinton foundation and all its corruption.
You guys are quite the optimists.
My dream is to see the networks covering a Trump victory rally just after Hillary's concession speech and the crowd chanting "LOCK HER UP!" The horror and salty ham tears would be divine.
Progtard tears are truly delicious.
"Good... Good.... let the hate flow through you!"
aaaaaaah nice
I note not many people on this site seem to bring the environment into the discussion. For those of us who feel we are at--or just past--some key milestones in terms of avoiding terrible, terrible misery in the future based on the effects of climate change and other facets of the crisis, misery that will be global and disrupt all nations and their systems, then electing someone who has vowed to continue a policy of denial is certainly less desirable than someone who will possibly be open to the sorts of solutions that are called for. That said, is the Senate remains Republican, we can expect them to continue bringing snowballs int the chamber an praising the nice, new, warmer climate where their mansions are located, while blocking any chance of the rather drastic reform needed.
Even if we assume man made climate change, there is nothing Hillary would or could do to change anything that matters.
Not true... she would be more than happy to institue government controls and tehn immediatly exempt whomever bribes her from them.
I note not many people on this site seem to bring the environment into the discussion.
because no one here outside of a few trolls believes govt is equipped to do a damn thing about it, certainly not without creating second-order effects that would be even worse than the apocalypse you fear. I mean no disrespect but what level of delusion is required to believe that bureaucrats and elected officials hold the keys to these solutions you seek?
I just can't feel sorry for the Trumps of the world that own all the beachfront and harborside real estate. Places like Bangladesh, however, are another matter.
you're kidding right?
For those of us who feel...
Well, that certainly explains the lack of logic, reason, and facts.
The best, and historically the only, way to avoid misery is economic development and the increased wealth it brings.
Of course, both major candidates are fucking morons on economic issues, so we're kind of fucked there too.

Ignoring the fact that the ol' 'avoiding the terrible, terrible misery' of your totally not religious End Times scenario is pulled out every election to the point of irrelevance, this election that is equally irrelevant due to:
A. If you believe the most dramatic of climate change models, it's too late anyway, the next hundred years are going to experience a rapid temperature increase that cannot be stopped, regardless of any policy shifts.
B. If you embrace the moderate models, anything the United States does really doesn't matter because rapidly industrializing nations will simply replace it (no, China will not be following any treaties. China's in this game for itself. Anything so they can continue producing solar panels and wind turbine magnets. If coal is the easiest way to power industry, especially due to their downturn now, they'll use it. This is also ignoring the literal thousands of accidental coal fires in-country that they either won't or can't put out)
C. If you believe the lowest models, it's cheaper to pay to negate the effects (i.e. start working on anti-malaria services due to the expansion of disease carrying mosquitoes).
And this is on top of the fact that Clinton's emails reveal that she's not a huge environmentalist, and right now climate change is a loser issue among the public. There will be no magical feelgood climate change treaty.
And you want to know why climate change is a non-starter issue? Because, based on the actual doomsday scenarios presented, the current technology and energy resources, the immediate solutions are absolutely unappealing to any voting populace.
Which is population control, a deliberately decline in the standard of living of industrialized nations, and preventing developing countries from industrializing.

You left out the worst part, allowing beauracracies, police agencies and politicians to institute it. The nazi's would look like kittens next to a world wide EPA with policing powers.
+1 Centralia, PA
>>>the sorts of solutions that are called for
Do go on.
Adam, I've got news for you. There is t a damn thing our govt. can do about the trajectory of earth's climate. Even if there was, it isn't happening while China and India have their current policies.
It's the most important election of my lifetime.
Clinton has explicitly stated that she will raise taxes for peeps in my bracket. I have no desire to send another 3% to the Federal coffers, particularly when I should be building a larger financial buffer for the looming economic 'reset'. Clinton will directly impact my personal ability to care for my kids and aging parents for the sole purpose of providing more waste to the free-shit army.
I particularly can't afford that economic hit on top of the rapid increase in healthcare costs. Premiums and deductibles for my employer funding health care plan have tripled in the last 5 years and it is expected to get worse and worse as insurers work to offset the Obamacare fiasco.
So its really important to me you stupid hack.
If you just shift into the proper form of optimism, our REAL problems become clear. $100,000,000,000,000 accrual basis debts? The effective banishment of interest - the age long "canary in the coalmine" of extreme collectivism is to do away with "usury" - from the landscape? Proven 24/7 surveillance and data collection of everyone? Once you toss aside those misguided fears, it becomes perfectly clear water levels in 2065 is the REAL danger, so much so that carbon taxes are necessary.
Feel better?
Seriously, my wife and I pay ~48% of income in taxes and fees, and no, we're NOT above that threshold Obama threw out about a decade ago. And that doesn't include annual debasement or artificially high regulated markets, which if included certainly puts us over 50% of income. I get the vibe from REPUBLICANS that this is a "good start". Important election? Maybe not, but these are important times. The Middle Class is radicalized. History proves that when this happens, shit hits the fan. EVERY FUCKING TIME. "But we're different! People were 'different' back then."
Any system that depends mostly on income tax will always fall heaviest on the middle class.
Any system that depends mostly on consumption tax will always fall heaviest on the poor.
Any system that depends mostly on issuing debt will always fall heaviest on the young.
Any system that depends mostly on a wealth/property tax will always fall heaviest on the wealthy.
Any system that wants to frame its federal revenue arguments based around one of those is just setting the groundwork for a future civil war. And that is precisely the environment in which everyone can fearmonger themselves into believing that the next federal election is the most critical evuh.
Once again Switzerland shows what actually works. Coerce everyone with a roughly comparable effective - but light - burden. And everyone then becomes a bit resistant to govt growth and very resistant to allowing cronyism by others. And few even know who the Prez even is.
Swiss are also very resistant to immigration.
Well - foreign-born is 28% of their population - twice as high as the US. Only Luxembourg is higher and only NZ and Australia are comparable. Maybe 'resistance' has different legitimate reasons for kicking in at those sorts of levels.
Ah yes, Switzerland.
In 2011 the Swiss paid about 16% less in taxes than we did (according to page 4).
Regarding the Swiss, does anyone know where "he of the narrowed gaze" has been of late?
Friday is his day to polish the Nazi gold.
Once again Switzerland shows what actually works.
A largely homogeneous society that lacks a permanent welfare class and a common ethos that understands that boat only moves if everyone grabs an oar. That and limited defense spending combined with the quaint idea of staying the fuck out of other people's business.
And before you respond with the multiple languages part, they're all European languages. We're talking about 90% plus single race, cultural norms that are more or less in synch, and no free shit brigade.
before you respond with the multiple languages part, they're all European languages.
Of course. Because no part of the world had such a peaceful Kumbaya 20th century as homogeneous Europe.
As long as the mandarins and their bureaucracy carry on, our demise will continue. One president or another will move things along at about the same general rate, differing only in the particulars of what they f*ck up fastest. This is especially the case with these bozos.
I agree, to a point.
If Hillary gets elected, things will largely remain the same. Faith in the US government will continue to deteriorate even as people's lives on average slowly get better. The former point does represent some very ominous stormclouds on the horizon, and I don't think Hillary is the one to address things like partisanship, distrust of institutions, distrust of elites, that may very well lead to some kind of massive break up (or, it just means America gets less and less effective and slowly turns in to Japan. Who knows). I do however think that the overall trends of the quality of life will continue on their merry way with Hillary, with the average person being better off now than they were 25 years ago.
Trump is a different scenario though. Besides the obvious of no one really knows WTF he's going to do, if Trump wins, he'll almost certainly have a co-operative Congress. This means he'll have far, far more ability than Hillary would to enact sweeping legislation. An explosion of debt, millions losing all health coverage, a massive fracture between America and international allies; how people think these things play out over the next 10 years depends on your political persuasion, but to me it does seem a lot more likely to be significant than anything Hillary might do.
There's not much of an upside either way, is there?
Pray for an insufficient majority for both parties, and slim chance that Johnson gets to be POTUS by way the the House. I put that outcome on the level of divine intervention.
if Trump wins, he'll almost certainly have a co-operative Congress. This means he'll have far, far more ability than Hillary would to enact sweeping legislation.
What is this, Bizarro World? Both the Democrats and the establishment Republicans despise Trump, and will happily work together to thwart him at every opportunity. Meanwhile the same politicians are just fine with Hillary, and she also has a sympathetic media on her side to boot.
It's Tulpa and his socks.
That's true of us all.
And don't forget the MSM, which would go along with *anything* Hillary wants and fight Trump at every turn.
Does the "MSM" have a veto power I'm unaware of? Or are you vastly inflating the ability of the media to do anything about a Republican trifecta?
And how the fuck is the "MSM" in Hillary's pocket? They've devoted more time to the so-called email scandal than to all policy talk on all subjects, combined. Yeah, they're definitely in the tank for her.
Think again. The GOP establishment might hate Trump on social issues for not allowing them to successfully move the party to match demographic trends, but they look awfully similar on domestic and economic policy. They both want to massively cut entitlement spending, massively cut taxes for the wealthy, roll back banking regulations to 2007 levels, and completely ignore climate change.
Wrong, if Trump is elected there will be bi-partisaned gridlock with the full fury of the MSM behind it.
Nearly, a perfect situation. Major gridlock for 4 years. The only worries would be foreign policy based. Even those might be mitigated if the world thinks that Trump is a crazed lunatic who might just nuke them.
Also I think there is a decent chance that Pres. Trump might whack a few regs off the books.
I disagree. Massive tax cuts for the richest, complete abandonment of any type of international effort on climate change, rolling back the ACA and leaving millions without health care coverage....yeah yeah, I get that these aren't exactly popular issues around here, but I utterly guarantee that Trump and Ryan are going to figure out a good deal of common ground.
Hillary and Ryan? Probably not so much.
You just sold me on voting Trump.
Keep talking Motiscrum, you are convincing the undecideds. If Trump wins Ryan and the GOPe will clutch their pearls fainting from disbelief, liberals Dems will cry rivers almost drowning in their tears and the MSM will have a conniption the likes you have never seen. The great big dog and pony show will blow up in their smug effete faces. The GOPe has already signaled they can work with Hillary to screw over the American public.
If that's your persuasion, so be it. I disagree with you, and would ask you to strongly consider the damage a bull like Trump could do to in foreign policy, but hey, vote whatever. It's a free county.
I'm just have serious doubts that Trump and Hillary would be equally unable to pass legislation. Paul Ryan and the rest of the GOP establishment might hate Trump on social issues and immigration, but it's pretty hard to distinguish the two groups on economic policy and government spending. Ryan is a smart guy, he'll figure out how to work with Trump.
If Trump wins, two things are certain:
--the media will rediscover that its role is watchdog, not advocate
--Congress will remember it a co-equal branch of govt, not a glorified debate society
Trump is results-may-vary, hyperbolic warnings notwithstanding. Hillary is more of the same and outside of Obama, no one is campaigning on the "aren't things great?" platform. And he's campaigning for the job even harder than she is because he's actually worried about how this combo of WikiLeaks and the FBI might tarnish his beloved legacy. Hillary just expects to get away with it.
Added bonus, Trump might clean out the DOJ and start putting the former Obama admin in jail.
Do you really not appreciate the damage this type of move could have? Using the long arm of the state to jail the party who's lost power? That should scare you, regardless of who you vote for.
What limits of immunity should we instate? How many family names are we going to allow to continue to be exempt from our laws?
I'd hardly call an election that's caused Joe from Lowell to run back to Hit & Run without checking to see if his underwear was even on the inside of his pants the 'least important election of our time'.
Spoiler alert: his shoes are on the wrong feet, too.
Okay, which one of you liberty-crazed nut-jobs is wearing Mr. Lowell's shoes?
And how many miles have we walked in them?
Joe's shoes are far too tiny for a normal-sized adult to wear.
Those shoes don't look very supportive, either.
It's not the "least important", probably, but I think people like Harsanyi are pushing back against the apocalyptic doomsayers (mainly on the right) who insist that this election is so important that if you don't vote for Trump, it will constitute the end of the Republic itself. Hillary will throw conservatives into the ovens, she will appoint communists to SCOTUS, she will start WW3 with Russia, she will confiscate all the guns, she will make Satanism the official state religion, yadda yadda. I mean it's absurd. Some of these people have lost their fucking minds.
No....It's not absurd.
The economy is at a breaking point. The unemployment numbers are an absolute joke and everyone knows it is much higher. Many people know others who have decided to never leave the federal teat. Whether unemployment or disability with a "back injury" there are too many doing it. Many see their neighborhoods overrun with illegals cheating the system. Taking welfare and assistance, while running gray-market businesses catering to other illegals. Petty crime is up and getting worse. Violent crime is skyrocketing in select urban areas.
We are seeing "confidence in government" at all-time lows, with many of the productive class seriously questioning their role in society.
Anger and resentment is widespread. Classism and racism are virulent and reducing trust in fellow citizens.
Anyone even remotely educated in history knows that we are on a dangerous path. The reactions to a Clinton presidency is a results of that. They recognition that her policy proposals will actively make it all worse, not better. Folks are scared.
I just don't see a Trump presidency turning much, if any, of that around. Though he would get proper scrutiny from the media and congress, which is why I think, on balance, it's probably better if he wins.
Trump could be a joke, but he at least talks to the problems people know and see around them. He provides hope. It could be a laughably false hope, but still, it appeals to people.
Hillary actively promises to make things worse. She has declared her policy objectives to increase taxation, encourage greater suckling at the Federal teat, do nothing for immigration reform, etc. She actively promotes hate between classes and races, referring to a large portion of the country as "deplorable". When has a POTUS or candidate ever so hatefully described the citizens they hope to represent? It wasn't a hot-mike issue or off-the-cuff comment....it was a prepared statement. WTF.'
And numbnuts thinks the response to that is "absurd"?
Virtually every single statistic is against you. Saying that there's a couple of shitty areas or neighborhoods means absolutely nothing - it's statistical noise. Yeah, it sucks if you live in one of those places, but it shouldn't be confused with the entire nation sliding off the table. This is exactly why we have leaders; people who can see the bigger picture and take action based on a more objective mind, instead of just hearsay, anecdotes, and gut feelings.
And "large portion" is pretty generous. Fun fact: only 17% of Trump voters are POSITIVE supporters - people voting for him because they like and support him. The majority of the people who have and will vote Trump are voting against Hillary, they don't actually like Trump. Make no mistake, "most people" think Trump is not a good candidate.

I really thought this was going to be the gayest election of our lifetimes, but it didn't seem to swing that way.
Hillary's opposition to gay marriage was really about Bill.
The situation will not change until we find competent people to put into the White House or politicians with ideas that have some crossover appeal. That time is not now.

Now she and Huma can divorce their spouses and marry each other. Then they can't force Huma to testify against her new husband.
Donald Trump is an existential threat, not just to our American way of life, but to the planet. We will be consumed by the fires of Hell if that man is elected.
Most
important
election
EVER!
Sounds good to me!
But if the republic can't survive a bad executive, then it's already dead.
It's been dead for a long time. The country is pretty much indistinguishable from other western democracies. Trump is the result of people finally noticing this. Of course Reason thinks all is good, that free trade and open borders has only good consequences and any day now will be the "libertarian moment!". Never mind that individuals have less and less freedom every day. Maybe that's why Reason loves to talk about marijuana, let's all get high so don't have to think about it!
"It certainly goes for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, neither of whom possess the requisite talent, vision or charisma needed to destroy this country in a mere four years."
*standing ovation*
They can, however, administer the coup de grace to the dying husk of the once-great constitutional republic.
Yes, government's increasing involvement in the economic and moral lives of citizens has made political stakes high.
at what point do the stakes become so high that pundits are no longer able to casually dismiss concerns over the outcome?
Some point after it's too late to do anything. And we're probably already there.
Yup.
Reagan/Mondale was a very important election. I think it would have been very bad to elect Mondale.
W/Gore was very important. If we had elected Gore, he wouldn't have commercialized global warmism.
Given the result of a Mondale victory......

We also probably wouldn't have gone in to Iraq, leading to the whole shitshow we have now. Also slightly consequential.
There is a chance this could end up being the mootest election in our lifetimes.
I've made $64,000 so far this year working online and I'm a full time student. Im using an online business opportunity I heard about and I've made such great money. It's really user friendly and I'm just so happy that I found out about it. Heres what I do,

Suzanne, how much do you charge for double anal?
I can see this becoming important if HRC gets elected and the Trumpers go all crazy and somehow seriously degrade the federal government's power to rule and the parties power to control elections.
It may not be the most important election, but it sure has been the most entertaining.
Dunno. If the nation and democracy is already in terminal decline, then the next election cycle could be even more pointless.
Strongest argument I've seen is SCOTUS and the rest of the judiciary. This is not addressed because...? Hopefully not because it's too strong of a counter-argument to deal with.
It is one of the most important elections in this time. If Hillary can be defeated, with the MSM and big money donors on her side, then we have a chance. If he wins, Trump will have defeated two political dynasties. I do hope we never hear from the Clintons and Bushes ever again with exception to that of a conviction/jail time. Understand if these people fail to win with every advantage given, it may give the people hope there are other options. There are rumblings that Michelle Obama may try to run and one of the younger Bushes is trying to make a play. People are attempting to put Chelsea's name out there. An untouchable political aristocracy with name recognition and supportive media will end it all. We as people of the greatest republic in modern history shrug our shoulders as a DOJ covers for an individual that blatantly with intent, violated the law. Donald Trump told that little quip about shooting someone in public and not losing supporters, a joke yes. The punchline is that regardless of support they would put him behind bars for 20 years and add an extra ten for saying the word pussy. The individual that is not held accountable for their actions or violation of law is the greater danger.

If Hillary wins she imports and amnesties her way to a permanent big government electoral majority.
Big Government supporters in the federal bureaucracy, the Supreme Court, the White House, and the voting booths.
Game over for limited government in the US
Permanently

It certainly isn't the least important, I know it is very important if it means Hillary can do jail time along with her filthy husband. There is an awful lot depending on how this goes.
"But if the republic can't survive a bad executive, then it's already dead."
The republic can withstand a Hillary Clinton presidency. I just don't see how personal freedom can withstand the Supreme Court justices she'll appoint.
"This Is the Least Important Election of Our Lifetimes"
This.... this blasphemy!
