"How election day could be a victory for Gary Johnson."

If no one tells him the results

    1. Florida Hipster   9 years ago

      Hello.

    2. Rufus The Monocled   9 years ago

      Hello.

"The premiums for certain health plans offered through Obamacare will rise by an average of 25 percent in 2017."

And that's how we calculate $2500 savings in politics. Don't forget to hand in your papers tomorrow!

      1. Florida Hipster   9 years ago

It could have been 50 percent. You're welcome.

        1. PurityDiluting   9 years ago

It was more than a 50% hike for me. Thanks for that!

          1. Florida Hipster   9 years ago

            Ouch.

            1. PurityDiluting   9 years ago

Percentages can be misleading, so I'll offer up some whole numbers:
Premiums in 2013: $1800/yr. Premiums next year: $5400
Deductible went up as well, but I haven't been to the doctor over that time period except for the annual physical. One year that did include getting a tube shoved up my ass in a preventative search for dingleberries. I thought it was a nice touch that the cost of getting reamed was already included in the premium.

      2. Tonio   9 years ago

Surely the fault of greedy kochporations and the obstructionism of the Harding administration.

        1. Doctor Whom   9 years ago

I know people who actually are blaming corporate greed. When asked how, they offer that all-purpose analysis known as name-calling.

          1. Tonio   9 years ago

Don't you know that the president of that insurance company makes like six million every year? And what about those greedy shareholders and their greedy insistence on profits?

            1. Free Society   9 years ago

People should be investing their money with no hope of reward. If they weren't so greeeeedy, breaking even would be enough for them.

              1. Tonio   9 years ago

You laugh, Freebie, but people actually believe that. Those people are economic illiterates and rarely have enough money to invest (not that they would know how or care to do so). They don't realize that many of those investors are pension funds or retirees who actually depend upon that income. They see all investors as the idle rich with swimming pools of money.

                1. Free Society   9 years ago

I know full well. It's good to explore the depths of leftist stupidity because it's good to know thy enemy. They are either unaware or just pretend that they are unaware for political brownie points, that investors are usually little old ladies living off annuities or retirees living off dividends or regular people parking their money in mutual funds et cetera. I think the answer is two-fold, 1) financial instruments are complicated and so hard for a leftist to understand and 2) because financial instruments are complicated and the average person receives the opposite of an education regarding finance, so it's easy to get the average person to reward you politically and socially by vilifying investors as greedy fat cats.

The left is good at what they do, stupidity and sophistry.

            2. Gadfly   9 years ago

It's the hypocrisy of self-centeredness. They frown on other people making money, but you can be sure that they like making money for themselves. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I think a lot of people really are so myopic that they can't see things from others' perspectives and so can't comprehend that an investor seeking profit or a CEO getting paid handsomely is no different from them asking for a raise or choosing to work at whichever job offers them the greatest compensation. The same holds true for people who complain when a company ships jobs overseas or otherwise seeks to cut costs; you can be sure that most of the complainers in their own lives seek to minimize expenses (shopping around for the best deal, using coupons, only buy something when it goes on sale). Sure, everyone should be allowed to disagree with or dislike any particular action someone or an organization takes, but it's blatant hypocrisy to move beyond disagreement and criticize someone as immoral (which is what charges of greed amount to) for behavior that one engages in oneself.

          2. thom   9 years ago

People aren't paying their fair share! We need to make sure everybody pays their fair share!

        2. Jerryskids   9 years ago

No, it's the fault of those Republican-run states that failed to expand Medicare/Medicaid as Obama asssumed they would and Hillary has promised she will make sure happens. See, if all those poor and old sick people now struggling to pay for health insurance had instead been given free healthcare by the government the taxpayers wouldn't now be saddled with higher healthcare costs. So Obama wasn't lying when he said healthcare costs would go down, he just didn't realize how evil Republicans are that they would deny people free healthcare just to spite the Democrats. (No, seriously, that's what I heard on CNN this morning.)

      3. gaoxiaen   9 years ago

One thing that is not considered is that nationalized healthcare in some countries (Taiwan, for example) amounts to a business subsidy that the USA does not bestow upon its entrepreneurs. This allows for greater flexibility and mobility in the labor market as well as lower car insurance premiums. Instead, the USA incorporates the worst of all systems, with a labor union (the AMA) writing the laws. America should have a free market in health care, which would allow pharmacists to prescribe, or regulate the medical care cartel as a public utility.

        Foundation shopping days.

      2. Florida Hipster   9 years ago

Ammo, if the past is a predictor for the future.

        1. AlmightyJB   9 years ago

          I've started.

          1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

I am sad because I was so rudely reminded that Cuomo banned online ammo sales to New York. I finally found decent prices for the calibres I use and they tell me that they can't ship to a New York customer.

            1. Rasilio   9 years ago

How close are you to the border? I am sure there are any number of UPS stores just the other side of it that will gladly rent you a PO box for a nominal fee

              1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

I don't think they'll ship to a PO box. (Not positive, as I've not checked.)

                1. OneOut   9 years ago

Maybe an out of state relative who will drop ship to you ?

                  1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

                    *cries* they live in Maryland!

More seriously though, the total cost of that double-shipping would exceed the savings from buying online.

                2. Zeb   9 years ago

UPS store "PO boxes" aren't really PO boxes. Though they might have rules about ammo deliveries.

            2. Agent Cooper   9 years ago

I'm so glad he knows what you should and should not buy. He's so smart!

            3. Gadfly   9 years ago

I don't see how they can legally do this. If you were to buy online from someone out of state and have them ship the ammo to you, that's interstate commerce, the regulation of which constitutionally belongs to the federal government and not the states. I hope someone sues and the courts have the good sense to strike down that law (a longshot, I know, but I can dream...).

              1. Zeb   9 years ago

I'm not sure, but I think that the commerce clause means that the feds could forbid such laws, but not that they have to.

              2. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

The lawsuit stalled when Scalia died. It had failed at the 2nd circuit and there was not a good chance of hitting Supremes with a favorable outcome.

                1. Gadfly   9 years ago

                  That's unfortunate to hear.

              3. Bubba Jones   9 years ago

The judicial precedent for wine shipments is that you can ban interstate shipments so long as to also ban intrastate shipments.

      3. Chipwooder   9 years ago

Precisely. Just picked up an M1A myself.

        1. Florida Hipster   9 years ago

I'm jealous. I really want one, but can't really justify spending the money.

          1. Chipwooder   9 years ago

No doubt. I don't have the scratch for a new one, but found one on consignment for $900.

            1. spqr2008   9 years ago

I either want one of those or a Garand. Have to check prices. If I can find one for around that price, I'd totally go for it. I'd seriously love to have one for the history involved, plus, when Liberals complain about Assault Weapons, I can point and say, hey, this is an assault weapon that isn't covered by any of your bans, fools!

              1. gaoxiaen   9 years ago

The M-14 is a great all-around rifle, but the 30.06 is my favorite for big game and long-range shooting.I traded my Garand for a 2.18 Bee (without the original stock) long ago. Still have a Swiss-made Cougar-Voerre chambered in 30.06. Great rifle. Hardly any recoil compared to the Garand.

            2. G?C   9 years ago

Dang Chipwooder - that's a good deal. I thought I got a good bargain when I got my SOCOM II in a Troy MCS for $1300...

        2. bacon-magic   9 years ago

          Nice.

Second place is just the first loser.

    3. Seriously not Tulpa, you guys!   9 years ago

The presidential election is two weeks from today.

Hillary Clinton wouldn't be able to obtain tge necessary clearance to attend basic training.

So, in two weeks, civilians are going to hand the US military over to a person the US military wouldn't trust enough to teach how to read a map.

      This is where we are.

      1. thom   9 years ago

Really though, how many 68 year old women does the military take every year?

      2. Gadfly   9 years ago

They are also going to hand the presidency over to one of (if not the) most openly corrupt individuals to ever pursue the office. It is truly a sad state of affairs. I can only hope that the old quote holds true, that "nations do behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives".

  3. Scott Foval, Jr.   9 years ago

ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack on a police academy in Quetta, Pakiston, that has left at least 60 dead.

            1. WTF   9 years ago

We simply have to cut CO2 and Gaia will reward us!

            2. Free Society   9 years ago

I think we're certainly getting there. It will be a new sort of dark age. There will still be cultural works produced and development taking place, but censorship will be rife, history will be misremembered, academia will be producing even more falsehood that it will add to our body of knowledge and the state will have stagnated human potential even more profoundly than it already has.

              1. Rufus The Monocled   9 years ago

It's a popular conception to think nothing *happened* during the Dark Ages. In fact, smart people are gonna smart and innovate. That never stops. It's when the general belief among people gives way to superstition, pseudo-intellectualism and science, prevails over reason and rational thought. After Rome fell, there was a bit of a 'vertigo' moment for Europe. The Renaissance is just Europe emerging from it and the rest is history: Scientific Rev., Enlightenment, American Rev. etc.

Now it's reverting back. People are letting their own private narratives rule the day in their splendid intellectual isolationism. Na-ah! Plastic is bad and nothing you say can change it and if your science says otherwise then your science is racist. Economies of scale is the construct of white privilege and if you think otherwise I will censor you. $15 minimum wage because rigged Etc.

But that doesn't mean people won't still go out and innovate - ie Uber/Lyft, Silicon Valley, etc. Except, it's getting harder and harder....and harder.

                1. Free Society   9 years ago

I'll be the first to tell people that medieval Europe was far more technologically advanced that the Romans. Better farming methods produced higher yields and the feudal order itself, not to be confused with serfdom, was a vast improvement on what preceded it.

But that doesn't mean people won't still go out and innovate - ie Uber/Lyft, Silicon Valley, etc. Except, it's getting harder and harder....and harder.

The deliberate stagnation of human potential. Government never fails at that. Ours is better than ever in that regard.

          2. SimonD   9 years ago

That's not the first time I've heard that said in all seriousness.

It's starting to become a thing (as a justification for more statism, perhaps? That's usually the net effect of any solution for whatever issues the lefties are whining about today)

            1. SimonD   9 years ago

I've said on more than one occasion that it's impossible to parody the Left. No matter how ridiculous we get, there's always an Ivy League professor saying the same thing for real (or worse).

It's a funny line, but clearly false. Politics in a fractured society with a powerful government becomes the most vicious sort of politics, as evidenced by the behavior of partisans in fascist, communist, and late-stage socialist states, as well as in the late-stage republican period of ancient Rome and the time periods antecedent to civil war in dozens of nations (including our own).

Weird thing about my job now is I can recommend people to vote for judges running. Weird to me, at least.
Side note: One of the people running for family law court in my county withdrew voluntarily because of the issues in his own divorce, which were eventually close to headline news. The sad thing is the remaining candidate still has to run a campaign, she won't win by default- the withdrawn candidate's name will still be on the ballot (too late as ballots were already printed) and the right to life voting machine may elect him.

My guess is complications from HIV/AIDS which could well have been contracted from a blood transfusion. But that is pure speculation based only on the refusal to list a cause of death - you used to see that a lot during the eighties and nineties with fundagelical families who lost family members to AIDS.

    Going through the motions.
...Feminism is in many ways a cargo cult, with the pervasive belief that if women just ape the dress, language, and mannerisms of men, the accomplishments they see men achieving will magically follow. Indeed, play acting the role of a famous man is all it takes to become a true feminist hero. This is why all it took for Amelia Earhart to be nicknamed Lady Lindy and Queen of the Air and be thrown a ticker tape parade was to cut her hair short, don a flight jacket, and ride as a passenger on a transatlantic flight.

The same could be said for Holmes and Theranos. What exactly did Holmes accomplish besides mimicking the dress and mannerisms of Steve Jobs and declaring that she was going to change the world? In both cases, all it took was a coat and a hairstyle, and feminists around the world swooned....

    1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

    PLEASE, BREAKUP WITH ME!
...What this guy is experiencing is actually a very common rationalization strategy women will use when they are saddled with a man their subconscious recognizes as Beta. In The Medium is the Message I point out that there's really no such thing as 'mixed messages' and that women's behaviors will generally inform a guy as to what a woman's real intent is. This is a basic behavioral psychology principle; behavior is the only true measure of motivation and intent. Thus, all the verbalizing of intent, verbal rationalization of purpose and 'open communication' simply becomes a part of the behavior which Red Pill behaviorists then parse as true intent....

...Most women's confessions of extra-pair infidelity isn't rooted in guilt. That's not to say women don't feel guilt or regret, it's just to say that the functional purpose of the confession doesn't subconsciously originate in feelings of guilt.

When women 'cheat', even when it's non-sexually, their subconscious is testing the man it suspects is Beta which she's paired with for confirmation of him being Beta. ...

    1. Longtorso, Johnny   9 years ago

...Yet here, with the benefit of Red Pill awareness, we can see a perfect example of a guy suppressing what his peripheral awareness is basically screaming at him. This woman has essentially verified his Beta status by his default willingness to forgive her Alpha Fucks indiscretions with few (if any) questions asked. That test failed, she now hopes he will actually get angry enough to break up with her. Again, test failed, as all of his efforts are directed towards his unconditional love and forgiveness....

Her roommate is a Native but my friend didn't know that. My friend tried to return the dream catcher but the tribe she brought it to said it wasn't one of theirs. Her roommate actually called the police because a dead person gave it to her and she wanted it back. My friend was arrested for theft. How much will her bail be? Will she actually go to jail over this? My friend also reported her roommate to the school for appropriation but now she knows that her roommate is Native. Sorry for all the questions but my friend was just arrested today and I'm waiting to see if I can bail her out.

Well, breastfeeding isn't an explicitly sexual act. Duly acknowledging that some people view it as such. So, if a woman takes off her shoes for a man not her husband who derives sexual pleasure from watching that is she cheating? The assumption is that for the woman, the taking off of the shoes is just taking off shoes and doesn't arouse her.

Also- there is a strange absence of interest in the Presidential race out here. The only signs I see are faded Bernie signs. There is one Trump sign down the road, and I cannot recall seeing a single Hillary sign. The Republicans' county HQ doesn't even have a Trump sign out front. Sampling errors abound. Your mileage may vary.

Consumer Reports Now Ranks Tesla Among the Least Reliable Carmakers

On Monday, Tesla made its debut at 25 out of 28 on Consumer Reports' annual car brand reliability rankings, putting the company just above Dodge (yikes!) and just below GMC (double yikes!).

But....but.....Tesla is a GAMECHANGER and the awesomest car ever made!!!!!

The "game changer" bit always cracks me up. There's a guy on a football board I frequent who is a massive Tesla fanboy (to the extent that his screen name there is Tesla...yeah, on a football board) who was wetting his pants with excitement over the Tesla 3, and how it was going to revolutionize everything, and Musk is such a genius, etc etc. It will be for everyone, you see, because everyone can afford $40K small cars that you can't drive more than 200 miles at a time.

    4. Certified Public Asshat   9 years ago

I can't tell if this comment is serious or not:

Thank you, Tesla, for re-energizing the auto industry again. Every car was beginning to look like a Camry, was shaped like a Camry, had the features of a Camry, and all sedan designs from all mainstream brands were predetermined from the get-go to start with a Camry-like setup. Tesla is the only non-exotic brand that anyone gets excited about today. In my day I had posters of Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Today, kids have pictures of Teslas on their phones. CR can suck it. We want our trick door handles, frameless glass and autopilot. Lesser cars can continue to have doors that you have to operate like a caveman.

I think the last line gives it away, but being that it is Gizmodo, still hard to tell.

      1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

I saw a Tesla waiting to leave a parking lot a few months back. It only stood out as one because I was stuck behind it at the light and could read the manufacturer nameplate. It was a boring looking car.

Donald Trump 'hosted wild parties with sex, cocaine and underage models' when he owned the Plaza Hotel

Donald Trump used to host wild cocaine-fueled sex parties with underage models as young as 15 at the Plaza Hotel, a new report claims.

Two men who attended the bashes said the Republican nominee threw them regularly in the suites of the Manhattan luxury hotel when he owned it between 1988 and 1995, the Daily Beast's Michael Gross reports.

Trump, who was married to his second wife Marla Maples at the time, never took cocaine at the parties, but would have sex with the girls, one of the men who attended has said.

While other guests did cocaine and drank, Trump was 'getting laid like crazy,' the man, a fashion photographer based in New York who wished to remain anonymous, said.

    When will Reason cover this?!?!??!?!?

Also, I thought starring in Tremors 6 was a new low for Michael Gross, but writing for The Daily Beast is just sad.

There will be a loud crack, as the social contract is broken. And there will be a loud pop as that contract ceases to exist. The mutual obligations it stipulated will disappear

Load of crap. The social contract isn't a real thing. Hillary is going to suck, but it's just another step in the direction we've been headed.

This is where the anarchist in me comes out, I guess. Commentary like that shows an undue trust in the possibility of good government. There is no social contract that has been holding things together and keeping people honest. Government is just another group of people doing shit. Once enough people have decided that the government is the country, and everything depends upon government policy and decisions, it's already too far gone. The world won't change. That's the world we already live in.

A fanciful metaphor about a fanciful metaphor.

No, there won't be a loud crack, nor will the social contract be suddenly broken. People might be disabused of the fantasies that they learned in government schools, and finally realize that the social contract is actually quite different from what they thought it was and that it is always subject to revision by the ruling elite.

Eh, my step dad is in love with the Tesla. He breathlessly await their every press release and then tells everyone he knows about how amazing they are. The latest one was pretty ridiculous, with him going on and on about how amazing Tesla is for getting a self driving car that can get on a highway and then get off the next exit. It's like he's completely forgotten about how google has been doing that for over a year now.

Speaking of signaling and driving a Tesla. I saw a Tesla on the road one day, complete with a little old baby-boomer lady behind the wheel, and the biggest Bernie sticker she could fit on the back of the car.

These people have no self awareness. If their political dreams came true, they would be driving a Wartburg to the bread lines. If they were not still starving in the car line.

  53. Bubba Jones   9 years ago

    This.

There was no glory day. It's petty corruption going back hundreds of years.
