I'm listening to Vektor and reading a paper about normalization of reprojection errors for improved pose estimation, so at least I'm not hammering nails into my eyeballs like you idiots, or whatever the fuck you're talking about.

...It does have something to do with nails and eyeballs and some kind of mass delusion, right? I got bored and drifted off when I was trying to read what's happening tonight.

Oh, well I have many friends in WI who will be happy.

        1. Chipper Morning Wood   9 years ago

This was the best American presidential debate ever.

Sad that someone who is a self proclaimed intellectual missed it.

This one will may down in history as the most influential debate everl.

Anyone who missed it based on faux intellectual pursuits is an idiot.

I love how robotics, AI, and machine learning are somehow "faux" intellectual pursuits, but pontificating on what is, essentially, political kabuki theater is the mark of a true thinking man.

"No I didn't say that" is Trump's response to bragging about sexual assault. He's basically taking Mike Pence's approach: Deny what was said

    1. Brochettaward   9 years ago

When women let Donald Trump do things to them, it's sexual assault.

She has an indwelling catheter. It's connected to the piss bag on her thigh, hence the Omar the Tentmaker sized slacks she fancies.

  49. BigW   9 years ago

I can't believe I'm going to get another 4 (8?!) years of a President that hates me and people like me (basically anyone who doesn't vote for her).

Before The One, Presidents actually counted the citizens who didn't vote for them as their constituents and real Americans.

Obama and Clinton view those who don't vote for them as the enemy. All other Presidents in my lifetime (even Bush, even Nixon!!) lead like they were leading all Americans. Obama and Clinton only care about card carrying members of the Party.

I and everyone else like me should prepare to deal with what that means......

    1. Rhywun   9 years ago

You should try living as a productive resident of a blue city sometime.

      1. Agammamon   9 years ago

He should try living as a resident of earth sometime.

'Before The One, Presidents actually counted the citizens who didn't vote for them as their constituents and real Americans.'

        Tell me another one.

        1. BigW   9 years ago

While the Left hated Bush, he didn't reciprocate from the Presidency. He was always decent to the Democrats. Even though it was the wrong decision, he let them vote on the Iraq war and didn't just shove it through on a party line vote.

Bill Clinton wanted to be liked by all Americans, and while the Republicans did not reciprocate, regular run of the mill Americans could at least see that he did things that most Americans agreed with. He's the most "reach across the aisle President in my lifetime".

And Regan, before the lefts relentless revisionist history, actually had a huge amount of support from the people. Ditto Bush, who was only ousted because of Ross Perot's candidacy.

          1. Agammamon   9 years ago

Yeah - and Clinton's trying to push through the '90's version of Obamacare? That was because he loved us sooooo much.

Same with Bush's 15 year war.

          2. Sanjuro Tsubaki   9 years ago

I have to disagree. I think the last Bush administration repeated some of the dirty tricks that the Democrats have engaged in (IRS audits and whatnot). Makes me wonder how bad things will get.

      2. BigW   9 years ago

That's why I live in a red state.....

...I mean...I've been in locker rooms, bars, clubs, golf courses, outside, inside, and I've been around heterosexual men in their 20s and 30s, and am in fact one of the latter. Reasonable, kind, thoughtful, generous, really wonderful people will spend a fair bit of time discussing the physical attributes of women in the area. Women do the same shit.

I have never, ever, ever heard anyone talk about raping or wanting to rape anyone, nor have I ever heard anyone use the term "consent", because back before this weird SJW idiocy that's sweeping college campuses, cafes, and mothers' basements across the nation, it was pretty much understood that the goal was to convince members of the appropriate gender to want to get naked, and the fastest way to make that not happen was to say things like, "Hey, can I sit next to you on the couch? Um, can I touch your leg suggestively while we watch a movie? Would you permit me to very subtly put my arm around your shoulder and allow my hand to slowly drift ever closer to your breasts, like a continent sliding across the surface of the Earth?"

      1. kevrob   9 years ago

High school guys said things like "she was beggin' for it" when what really happened is that she reluctantly gave the braggart a peck on the front porch, `cause she hadn't locked down a prom date with the guy she really liked, and she wanted to keep him on the string as backup. Now, I went to high school in the early 70s, and was never on a sports team, so much cruder things may have been said when the jocks didn't have the dweebs, nerds and doofuses they went to gym class with around.

BTW, do millennials who aren't on teams use locker rooms? I understand that showering after gym, if the school even has gym, isn't mandatory anymore. You don't want people to see your junk? Just douse yourself in Axe and sweat your way through the rest of the school day. Cursory web surfing tells me showers at school have been de-emphasized or eliminated starting some 30 years ago. Not having kids, this wasn't a thing I had reason to know about. Trump and Bill Clinton probably used locker rooms at golf courses to change shoes, I guess.

More people probably know who Hans Gruber is than know who Jonathan Gruber is.

        1. Trigger Warning   9 years ago

I don't understand how he's managed to escape more scrutiny, and why he'll never be brought to account. If not legally (I'm not sure he broke any laws), perhaps professionally. His academic career should have been ruined.

The magnitude of his lies is sickening. The reach of his machinations, astounding. And he remains mostly anonymous, highly-paid despite a feeble and unworthy body of research, and politically well-connected. 1. CZmacure   9 years ago

There are studies which show that American immigrants become approximately as xenophobic as a native within a few decades, so.. yeah.

Out of Papaya's "Third World Peasants and Muslims," the "Muslims" cohort seems to be dramatically swamped by the "Third World Peasants" cohort. Specifically... Mexicans.

            http://www.migrationpolicy.org.....-over-time

            1. PapayaSF   9 years ago

The 1965 immigration reform was the tipping point, but it didn't really get bad until the 1980s, with mass illegal immigration. That's when the large welfare burden started, bilingualism, shifting California permanently Democratic.

And it's been downhill since then. At the very time technology is making low-skill jobs obsolete, we get millions of low-skill workers, plus a lot of criminals, because we are not screening for quality. Now it's one anchor baby at taxpayer expense, and eventually you can bring your whole village.

The Muslim cohort is small but rapidly growing, and will continue to provide a good excuse for government surveillance, because Islam is fundamentally incompatible with the Constitution and liberty.

              1. CZmacure   9 years ago

It seems a little weird to blame immigrants for the Welfare state... wasn't that native born whites, in the statistical majority of voters, voting for that? Why focus your disapproval on the people receiving the benefits, instead of the people providing the benefits?

Peak foreign-born people as a share of the population appears to have been around 1890.

Why were all those immigrants "good" and all the immigrants since 1965 "bad" for liberty?

                  1. PapayaSF   9 years ago

Cripes, how much can I fit in one comment? Of course I disapprove. But when you're in a hole, stop digging.

Peak foreign-born people as a share of the population appears to have been around 1890.

Which led to many social problems, and then immigration restrictions to deal with them.

Why were all those immigrants "good" and all the immigrants since 1965 "bad" for liberty?

Who said "all"? Immigration is often good, but like anything else, it's always possible to have too much of a good thing. And quality matters. It does not help the US to welcome the slum dwellers and peasants of Latin America. Or future jihadis from the Middle East.

                    1. Trigger Warning   9 years ago

                      "Slum-dwellers and peasanrs."

Papaya. Come on. How many of them live like that because that's all there is? Lots of them, right?

I'm not saying let them in and give them welfare and handouts. I think we can all agree that is stupid. But "peasants?" We're all peasants. Royalty is for Brits and Eurotrash. Americans are, culturally, supposed to revile the idea of royalty, and mock it every chance we get.

                    2. PapayaSF   9 years ago

I mean poor, uneducated people from rural villages. Isn't "peasants" an accurate term? I don't mean "non-royalty." "Peasant" has never meant that, AFAIK.

In San Francisco we recently had a knife-wielding homeless drug addict shot and killed by the police. He was an illegal from Mexico (IIRC) who didn't even speak Spanish, just Mayan. Now, maybe he was not from a rural village, but he was certainly poor and uneducated. "Peasant" is insulting but not inaccurate.

                2. PapayaSF   9 years ago

Only goes back to 2010, though. There was a big jump after 2001, though.

                  1. CZmacure   9 years ago

If you think a graph that shows Muslims going from 1% of the population to 2% in the next 35 years shows that they are "rapidly growing" ... ok. We'll agree to disagree on their relevance of this absolute and relative growth.

                    1. PapayaSF   9 years ago

                      In 1950 it was 0.1%

                3. PapayaSF   9 years ago

My problem is with: welfare burden, strained resources (CA drought) and public services, low education, low IQ, criminality, revanchism, ethnic separatism, the conflicts of multiculturalism, lowered social trust, destructions of traditions, empowering Democrats and statists.

It doesn't matter what country or ethnicity is the source of those problems. They are problems regardless. As it happens, yes, those problems are on full display with much of our Mexican and other Latin American immigrants, but if they were all Icelanders I'd have the same complaints. So I reject the idea that I am being racially prejudiced.

                  1. CZmacure   9 years ago

What percentage of these problems, in your view, is due to immigrants?

                    What percentage due to natives?

                    1. PapayaSF   9 years ago

I have no idea, and don't care. If half the food in my fridge is rotten, I don't go the store and buy food that's half rotten, because that's "equal." I want the new stuff to be 100% good.

                    2. PapayaSF   9 years ago

I don't need to know the "percentage of the problem" to look at LA's Most Wanted and grasp that there is an immigration problem.

                  2. CZmacure   9 years ago

I reject the idea that I am being racially prejudiced.

If I summarize your view it seems to be that people from "advanced" countries are likely to be "better" than people from "less advanced" countries. You seem to wish to only allow immigrants of a certain social/economic class or higher. This seems to entirely buy into the idea of "progress" as unambiguous, and is an oddly ... progressive ... worldview to hear from someone who dislikes progressive politics so much. It's also anathema to the tradition of our nation as a nation where people who do not start out great can become great through hard work.

If you are concerned with the "destruction of traditions" then a hypothetical class-based system for immigration would seem to have meaningful challenges. Leaving aside that social class can change suddenly in either direction, is it fair to say that you would approve of a system in which people are considered individuals and evaluated individually?

So a Filipino doctor whose uneducated wife has childhood-transfusion-acquired Hepatitis and whose two children do not... we take only the doctor? It seems odd to suggest that America will get better if the only people we allow to immigrate are high social class people who are willing to leave their families behind. But if we are only accepting the best, what justifies keeping this family together?

                    1. CZmacure   9 years ago

Could you also explain how the pre-1965 status quo (which did completely exclude Chinese and put quotas on Italians but... did not limit Mexicans... and others from the Western Hemisphere...) was more in line with your ideal system?

                    2. PapayaSF   9 years ago

My "ideal system" now would be to greatly reduce immigration. No poor, no uneducated, no criminals, no diseases, no Muslims. We already have more of those than we can deal with. And get most illegals out, ideally voluntarily.

                    3. CZmacure   9 years ago

My "ideal system" now would be to greatly reduce immigration.

How greatly? Give me a number.

                    4. PapayaSF   9 years ago

Well, duh, of course a Swedish immigrant in 2016 is more likely to be educated than one from Somalia or Guatemala. Wasn't always the case, but it is now.

tradition of our nation as a nation where people who do not start out great can become great through hard work

Yeah, yeah. Times change. We're a broke welfare state being crippled by multiculturalism and statism. We have a huge number of unassimilated immigrants. Time to stop digging this hole, and to stop the Democrats from changing the electorate in their favor.

Tough luck for the doctor. The Philippines needs you. Stay there.

                    5. CZmacure   9 years ago

                      Times change.

Apparently they do not change very much, at least if we judge by the anti-immigrant rhetoric :

However, we have in the United States today hard-core, indigestible blocs which have not become integrated into the American way of life, but which, on the contrary are its deadly enemies. Today, as never before, untold millions are storming our gates for admission and those gates are cracking under the strain.

                      -- Representative Pat McCarran, 1952

I concede that the Welfare state does make immigration "worse" but I find it more than a little suspect that all the rest of your arguments were made in 1952 and before that, in 1924.

Italians were, in 1924, all of the things Mexicans are today. Was it a mistake to let them in? Has their presence in the United States been a net negative? Why are Mexicans (and Muslims?) different? How are they so unlucky to be the ones for whom this argument, which was wrong every other time, is now actually accurate?

                    6. BigT   9 years ago

You must be short b/c Papaya's point zoomed over your head.

In earlier days we did not have multilingual govt or schools that facilitated separateness and most people liked the 'melting pot' idea. Now we encourage anti-American behavior and put up roadblocks to assimilation. As long as those features are in place we should limit immigration to people who will most likely assimilate.

                    7. PapayaSF   9 years ago

                    8. PapayaSF   9 years ago

Why are Mexicans (and Muslims?) different?

For Mexicans: sheer numbers, plus a revanchist movement.
                      For Muslims: Core anti-American, anti-Western, anti-women, anti-gay, anti-liberty beliefs.

The point she was attempting to make was that the rebels who are the greatest threat to Assad at this point are not ISIS, so Russia fights them instead of ISIS.

          No.

The Secretary of State selling political favors to foreign governments is not capitalism.

          Take a look for yourself:

"In all, governments and corporations involved in the arms deals approved by Clinton's State Department have delivered between $54 million and $141 million to the Clinton Foundation as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments to the Clinton family, according to foundation and State Department records."

        2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

When Trump was talking about Hillary making money from her office as Secretary of State, this is what he was talking about.

Sales to foreign governments requires the approval of the Secretary of State, and when she was the Secretary of State, she accepted money from foreign governments and defense contractors who had deals before her that were waiting for her approval.

The figures Mother Jones quotes are just the ones that were approved by Hillary.

    The good/best

    - Shakford wins prize for "always coherent" - a feat in the short format, and for someone 'not actually watching' like me, actually informative
    - Slade wins on wit - turns boring into interesting
    - Ed is runner up on jokes - gets points for good re-tweets

    The bad/worst =

    shikha sood dalmia @shikhadalmia

Threatening to prosecute and imprison your opponent is the kind of thing that Third World potentates do!

    - Robby scores runner-up worst for babbling about 'sexual assault' for an hour, then moaning that 'too many people are focused on 'sex stuff' and not foreign policy'... then jumping headfirst back into more moaning about 'sex stuff'.

    The booby prizes

    - Matt, staying cool shouting out the dude from Nirvana and moaning that he needs to get drunker
    - Sally Kohn wins as "Reason's Retard-Mascot"
    - Boomer wins "Most likely to soon replace Soave"-award
    - ENB & Lauren Krisai win the "incomprehensible girly gibberish" prize

Yeah, when she was writing about Detroit, she was on fuego.

She gets obsessed with immigration. Any suggestion that maybe immigrants should have to show some identification before they set off bombs or whatever is seen as pure fascism, and that gave her a scorching case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.

It was far less of a trump train wreck than I was anticipating.

Not that Clinton was especially articulate in my way - but don't you get the the impression that trump doesn't really understand anything? None of those responses seemed any more than evasions or some form of repetitive word salad.

If Johnson was in there it would be shocking as he would directly respond to each question - while probably not coming off well on all of them.

    1. Red Rocks Dickin Bimbos   9 years ago

but don't you get the the impression that trump doesn't really understand anything?

That was my impression. Some of his responses were painfully obtuse. A buddy of mine compared him to Michael Scott from The Office and that seemed about right.

        1. UCrawford   9 years ago

Thing about Michael Scott, though, is that despite his gibberish and personality quirks, he's actually an effective manager who runs one of the few profitable branches of Dunder-Mifflin and he will occasionally do something truly brilliant at a key moment...often by accident, but sometimes by a genuinely unique and competent insight that nobody else had.

If we actually got a Michael Scott performance out of Donald Trump, we'd be doing pretty well.

          1. W. Chipper Dove   9 years ago

There was an episode where he went to a sales meeting at a restaurant with a potential client played by Tim Meadows, and totally nailed it using his natural personality and skills as a salesman. It showed that the Michael Scott character wasn't just a clueless idiot all the time. I hope the comparison with Trump proves accurate.

    2. The Fusionist   9 years ago

If you missed the debates, at least you can watch the highlights here.

    3. Gadfly   9 years ago

It was a real mud-slinging fight with Trump doing surprisingly well (after the first debate and post debate troubles I was expecting him to crash and burn, so my view may skewed - he's no Cicero, after all). Clinton gave her usual talking points, talked about her concern for the children, said the Russians want Trump to win the election, said Trump was unfit to be president, and talked about taking the high road. Trump demonstrated that he had actually practiced (biggest shocker of the night), pulled out a lot of his standard talking points, talked a lot about stopping foreigners from beating America at trade, hit Clinton on several of her weaknesses, said he'd prosecute Clinton and that she should be in jail, and had the line of the night (imo) in criticizing her from blaming Abraham Lincoln for her quote during the financial speech that politicians should have one policy position for the public and another in private. I'd say the news reactions that this was the nastiest presidential debate ever are correct. If all that sounds interesting to you, I'd say it's worth watching. If that description is a turn-off, then stay away.

I'm still @#*)&@ amazed that this NBC "Fact Check" is real

    1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

I just don't understand why people aren't being fired left and right and the media isn't apologizing to everyone that "Seriously, we weren't always like this."

      1. The Fusionist   9 years ago

"Seriously, we're usually not like...sorry, let me try again: Seriously, we're not...HA HA HA HA HA I knew I couldn't finish that sentence."

      Trump Fact Checks: 5
      Clinton Fact Checks: 0

Trumps sucks, but the media is worse.

The stupidest part is: Hillary isn't beating Trump.

    Trump is beating himself.

Well Curt Schilling, you have to admit that she's right, the poophole at gun shows does stink.

Also, are the Clintons hoping to get a Motel 6 franchise for the Lincoln bedroom?
Damn shame the kid's so ugly; they'd have been far more wealthy if they could have shopped her around more.

So, I've just started watching it. Wish I had been here from the get go. I would have had a few comments right at the beginning about the guy in a white v-neck t shirt. You think the studio loaned him that supports jacket, or does he dress in a white t shirt and jacket?

Apparently the focus group reproduced during the debate. At least somebody had a good time.

Threatening to prosecute and imprison your opponent is the kind of thing that Third World potentates do!

Like using the tax authorities against your political opponents? Or corrupting law enforcement to protect your political allies from prosecutions for obvious crimes? That ship has sailed.

  288. PapayaSF   9 years ago

Sorry, I haven't been very regular around here for months, so could someone explain the "fruit sushi" references?

    1. DK   9 years ago

ENB outed Robby as a connoisseur of fruit sushi.

    2. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

A supposed millennial sexual trend involves inserting fruit sushi rolls into a rectum to enhance an orgasm. Robbie is a millennial, therefore the joke is that he is into anally pleasuring himself with fruit sushi. It's a juvenile and disgusting hit and run meme.

      1. Sarah Jackson, PHD   9 years ago

But how does fruit sushi fit in with the gun show poophole?

        1. VG Zaytsev   9 years ago

          Snugly

  289. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

Just checked the Twitter feed - a bunch of news junky dorks are making fun of another dork who is heavy and wore a sweater, and somehow they're all morally superior to everyone else. Got it.

You don't understand. It was a sweater with a zipper.

Hope some people are still up. I'm on a 4-day pass and just got back from an epic road trip, which included machine guns and a drive through Death Valley.

It's funny how Team Blue only cares about sex scandals when Team Red does it. At least a few Team Red guys refused to defend Trump. Bragging about cheating on your wife is pretty bad. It's not a hanging offense, sure, but it does show a lack of character. And yet, many of the people who are outraged about this were perfectly happy to defend the likes of Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Ted Kennedy, JFK, Bob Filner, and Joe Biden to name just a few.

Today, I learned about an incredible rags-to-riches story of Bob Williamson:

    2. PapayaSF   9 years ago

The trip sounds cool. Did you get my email with the grenade training video?

    3. Agent Cooper   9 years ago

      1. PapayaSF   9 years ago

        Try this one.

        1. Derpetologist   9 years ago

Anyone who has ever taken offense at the phrase "you throw like a girl" should watch Army grenade training. Many female soldiers could barely throw. Although there was one female soldier in my platoon who got the expert grenade badge.

I can't tell the nationality of the people in the picture, but they aren't US Army. I threw the live grenades from a concrete bunker and there was only one trainer there with me.

There is also this idea, one that many of Reason's writers believe in, that Republicans always have to change/take action/ respond/ improve. There are never expectations that the Democrat party should do anything differently.

A charitable interpretation of this idea is that there's still hope for the GOP and the Dems are beyond repair, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

  293. Sevo   9 years ago

E-version of local (lefty) rag has the headline that 'Trump would put Clinton in jail'. I'll presume this is intended to be a slam on Trump rather than a pretty accurate view of where the hag deserves to be.

    1. Jimmy Free Trade Pirate   9 years ago

It was an honest threat from one lefty to another.

E-version of local (lefty) rag has the headline that 'Trump would put Clinton in jail'.

Everyone in the media is running with that as the "talking point" take-away.

they don't seem to realize that this resonates strongly with everyone who supports him, and forces everyone else to keep thinking about her misconduct.

Its stupid if they want want something to actually bash trump with. Its sort of like the above "Fact Check" = sometimes they reach too far in their desperation to haul her into office, and end up saying shit that just undermines themselves.

  294. Playa Manhattan.   9 years ago

I spent all evening lighting my farts on fire. Other than one minor mishap, I feel like it was a pretty productive choice.

Random thought: I wonder if the final assault on Mosul is being postponed until after the election. I remember that the Fallujah offensive in 2004 didn't happen until after the election.

    1. Jimmy Free Trade Pirate   9 years ago

I'm not a military person, but that makes sense from a political point of view. The Generals can blame a Foreign Policy fuck up on a politician, rather than take the blame themselves.

      1. Derpetologist   9 years ago

I was thinking it was a more a way for the incumbent pol/party to cover their asses. Hard for a guy to get re-elected if hundreds of American troops get killed the day before the election, although it didn't hurt FDR.

  299. PapayaSF   9 years ago

So a fly lands on Hillary during the debate. Frogs eat flies. Pepe is a frog. OMG meme magic is real! Praise Kek!

  300. Derpetologist   9 years ago

Other random thought: I checked out Hoover Dam on my trip and realized that it's the opposite of Obamacare. It was carefully planned, ahead of schedule and under-budget, and actually did all of the things it was supposed to do. The cost of the dam in 2016 dollars is about $700 million. In contrast, the Obamacare website's official cost was $800 million with an actual cost of about $2 billion.

How is it that a YUUUUGE construction project with 80 year old technology was a complete success while the much less complicated modern day project was a total clusterfuck?

    1. Playa Manhattan.   9 years ago

There's actually a movement to have the Glen Canyon Damn removed.

      Yes, people are that stupid.

      1. Derpetologist   9 years ago

They don't want to remove the dam, they just want to open the gates so that it no longer holds back the water. See, that's not so crazy, right?

Oh sure, that reservoir is really useful for a few people...but dozens of nature lovers are deprived of natural beauty!

there are SF idiots here that want to close Hetch Hetchy, which is where they get all their freaking water from.

    2. PapayaSF   9 years ago

Hoover Dam was contracted out to people who knew what they were doing. The O-care website was hobbled with near-impossible political requirements, then done by incompetent government agencies and some crony capitalists.

E.g. calculating the subsidies required connecting dozens of different computer systems at the state and federal level alone.

      1. CZmacure   9 years ago

Hoover Dam was contracted out to people who knew what they were doing.

Member when migrant workers were very poorly treated and ended up living in unrealistic-government-schedule-created shanty towns in the desert and dying of "pneumonia" which was actually carbon monoxide poisoning from working in unventilated 140 degree tunnels? Member???

So, i just finished watching the debate on the interwebs (better than TiVo!), and my conclusion is that the guy in the white v-neck t-shirt was some guy from the stage crew who got thrown somebody's jacket and was pressed into service as a seat filler.
    ...
Also, a couple of old people were saying absolutely horrible things about each other; things that no previous candidates would have ever said about their opponent. In fairness, there is a lot of material to work with.
