Floridians Flee from Matthew, Ryan to Finally Campaign for Trump, Theranos Closing Labs: P.M. Links

-
NASA Florida Gov. Rick Scott is telling residents in the areas of Florida being evacuated due to Hurricane Matthew (all 1.5 million of them) to get the heck out of there. The eye of the storm is expected to hit the coast Friday morning. The death toll in Haiti over the hurricane is greater than 100.
- House Speaker Paul Ryan will finally start campaigning for Donald Trump this weekend. Meanwhile a pack of former GOP lawmakers signed a letter rejecting Trump.
- Scandal-tainted blood-testing company Theranos is closing all its labs and eliminating 40 percent of its staff.
- There are plans under consideration in the United Kingdom to force all businesses there to list all foreign workers they employ or do business with.
- This is what gets reported out of debates when Californians are left with two Democrats to choose from for a Senate seat. (Hint: It's not about policy)
- Twitter's stock values plunged after sources indicated that several major companies, like Apple, Google, and Disney, were not interested in purchasing the social media service.

The eye of the storm is expected to hit the coast Friday morning.
If only Obama had signed that Paris thing sooner.
Afternoon.
Really thankful I live in the one part of the Florida east coast that isn't going to get pummeled by this thing.
Where are you? South South Florida?
Fort Lauderdale suburbs. South and west of the city. If you go a couple of miles due west from where I live, you're in the Everglades.
How do you think all those Key Deer got infected with Hookworms?
They caught it from Juvenile?
By running around barefoot?
Hello.
"Twitter's stock values plunged after sources indicated that several major companies, like Apple, Google, and Disney, were not interested in purchasing the social media service."
I feel terrible. Just terrible.
Time to double down on hate tweet monitoring committees.
Was going to say the same thing.
*wheels out world's tiniest record player, inserts world's tiniest recording of "My Heart Bleeds for You"*
There's another phrase that is becoming increasingly incomprehensible due to changing technology.
Geez man, in *my day* we used to take some pride in service - get out the world's tiniest violin and play in person.
So do I. Because no way Our Betters let their beloved Twitter collapse, now that SJWs are poised to start the purge of Wrong Thinkers from it.
Plus, where would the journalists get stories?
Wow. When you can't get Apple or Google to hugely overpay for your tech business, you really are doin' it wrong.
Too bad Verizon is buying Yahoo. This would have been the perfect opportunity for Mayer to squander more shareholder money.
Makes sense. Internet companies are starting to get wise to the fact that merely having a lot of users doesn't automatically equal profit. Add in having to deal with Twitter users and I fully understand why the big ones are looking the other way. I still can't believe Verizon bought Tumblr.
Think it was Yahoo! that bought Tumblr. Because Marissa.
Verizon picks up Tumblr for free (with Yahoo!) after the $250 million write-down. Again because Marissa.
Manbearpig's fury cannot be contained.
I read that as furry...*wretch*
+1 YIFF
I blame Bush
I'm on the east coast of Florida but I'm staying.
Actually, one of the more dangerous things about thisstorm is that the eye is not expected to hit the coast at all. Instead it will approach the coast and then follow it about staying about 15-20 miles offshore. This will ensure that the eastern half of the peninsula from Melbourne to Jacksonville will get hurricane force winds (> 73mph) while most of the rest will get tropical storm force winds.
Also the storm surge will pretty much cover the barrier islands with 5' of water and given how slowly the it's moving it'l be hours before it goes down again. Gov Nosferatu is absolutely correct. Anyone who stays there is crazy.
"If only Obama had signed that Paris thing sooner."
That Paris thing is what caused to hurricane.
Over a decade without one and the first season after Paris ?
Poof, here comes a big one.
Has any of these enviro wackos ever for once thought that GAIA gave birth to all that oil in her belly for a reason ?
Like maybe one day she knew she would need it to stave off another ice age ? Huh ?
Twitter's stock values plunged after sources indicated that several major companies, like Apple, Google, and Disney, were not interested in purchasing the social media service.
But it's so chock full of value.
Stock market is a leading indicator ... it is discounting the lack of relevance to the Donald's tweets 4 weeks from now
Twitter's stock values plunged after sources indicated that several major companies, like Apple, Google, and Disney, were not interested in purchasing the social media service.
#rejected
There's a word for this somewhere...Not rejected but...
Bullied?
By 70% or so?
Good one, Junior.
Thanks, Tonio!
"The death toll in Haiti over the hurricane is greater than 100."
How the hurricane happened.
Is that Bill's dong?
I heard it was oddly shaped, but I don't know about that.
SF's next story: Bill's dong conspires with Trump's hair to get both Clintons locked up. Disgusting sex rituals are somehow involved.
Can anyone tell difference in before-hurricane/after-hurricane photos of Haiti?
Manbearpig joins the campaign!
The EU will provide handy national flag armbands to the UK, provided they take a bunch of Germans of North African descent next year.
Clinton given questions ahead of interview
No wonder they make such a fuss over Gary's gaffes. They must assume that he's getting the questions ahead of time too.
Should this surprise anyone?
Gary should just bring a smartphone, and any time he's asked a question about world geography, just google an answer.
I think instead he should just #Dab and then call the interviewer a racist
FTW!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2EfpQiOQrY
Not that I want to defend Her Shrillness, but isn't this somewhat standard for sit-down interviews with major figures, just so they can prepare some talking points ahead of time? Obviously that wouldn't preclude follow-up questions, but I wouldn't be surprised if even Trump was sent topic discussion lists ahead of time before sitting down with 60 Minutes or whoever.
Apparently GJ isnt given the same treatment.
Aleppo, for example, wasnt a followup. If it had been, I think he handles it okay.
Being from NM, GayJay might have assumed the question was about aleppo peppers.
Apparently GJ isnt given the same treatment.
Aleppo, for example, wasnt a followup. If it had been, I think he handles it okay.
The squirrels, however, always follow up.
They are merciless. May their tails be ever bushy.
Plus, Steve Harvey is not exactly going to spit hard-hitting journalistic material. This was clearly a puff piece for publicity.
I find Hillary's obvious insincerity and fake humility a lot more scuzzy than Steve sending her questions ahead of time.
On that however, you are correct, and that makes this more of an "appearance" than an interview.
I don't believe it is, no.
If they were truly honest, each of those scripted interviews would have disclaimers: "This is a scripted interview where the subject was provided the questions in advance, and the interviewers agreed to not ask any questions which were not on the list provided to the subject of the interview." Those disclaimers would be shown at the start, end and after every commercial break.
Professional driver ... closed course ... do not attempt this yourself at home.
No animals were harmed during the filming of this segment
Except for that goat we sacrificed before we began....
He said "during" so they'd be in the clear.
Is it standard to be told by your staff "Steve's going to put up these specific photos for you to talk about" and then for the candidate to act surprised when the photos come up in the interview?
Didnt I suggest earlier this week that Gary should ask for the questions 2 days in advance?
Finally we know what happened to Cytotoxic.
Wow! Not only Somalia apparently has a government, but it even has policies related to mental health.
When even Somalia has abandoned Libertarian principles...
I seriously do not understand the "His country won't take him back, so we're stuck with him" crap. Fuck that shit. End diplomatic relations with Somalia until they take him back. Or, give him a temporary diplomatic passport, fly him to Somalia, take him to the Canadian embassy, take back the passport, then kick his ass out the front door.
I was thinking drone, but he's in the GBU case and it has a parachute. Humane.
Uh... ok. We'll cut off diplomatic relations with every country whose single national we have in custody which refuses to take them back. I see no potential downsides to your visionary plan.
I understand that you hate immigrants a lot for some reason (did one run over your dog?), but this post shows that you are not approaching issues surrounding immigration, nationhood and international relations seriously.
I understand that you hate immigrants a lot for some reason (did one run over your dog?)
Uh, Pan's from the former Yugoslavia.
Uh... ok. We'll cut off diplomatic relations with every country whose single national we have in custody which refuses to take them back. I see no potential downsides to your visionary plan.
We're Canadian, we can pull this shit off and get away with it. What's Somalia going to do, send over less low-skilled immigrants and complain about our anti-piracy activities off their coast? So scary.
I think he was responding to Papaya.
But on the other hand, we cut off diplomatic relations and...what? We ask UN nicely to make sure none of our money ends up in humanitarian aid?
Shit, if Somalis want to play hardball, they can start deporting all the idiots from Edmonton who went to join Al-Shahab a few years ago.
I think he was responding to Papaya.
Then that criticism is probably fair.
Shit, if Somalis want to play hardball, they can start deporting all the idiots from Edmonton who went to join Al-Shahab a few years ago.
It's highly unlikely those guys would end up back in Edmonton if deported, even if the Somali government was capable of that.
Affirimative.
Haha, burrrrn.
Seriously, though, anyone know why he went the way of Bo Cara and our other retards?
We just couldn't live up to his high standards and recognize his genius.
I think it dawned on him that Trump wasn't going to lose in a landslide and might win. Like Joe from Lowell after Obama took office, he wasn't prepared to take the merciless beatings that awaited him.

You're funny when you're incoherent. Okay not really that funny.
He's probably waiting until after the election, depending on who wins. Hillary wins, he'll be back to crow about it and will occasionally start commenting again for the next 4-8 years. Donald wins, we probably won't ever see him again because he'll have hanged himself in his closet.
Honestly, I think he got a job where he couldn't comment during regular hours, and can't be arsed to corpsefuck evening threads.
Sadly this is about all one can do with this shitty commenting system and a west coast timezone... oh and be "first" on the 4am brickbat.

Logic and rhetoric obviously weren't available at Becky's school.
Becky was the poster to whom that response was directed. The writer was Bruce Tieman.
Ok, instead of providing you fucking apes with entertainment, this Thursday, I'm demanding something from you. I'm needing info on the best touring bagger/full dresser, however you want to call it. I've already ruled out the Goldwing (looks like a 1950s rocketship and I don't care for the suspension), the K1600GTL (repairs/maint. too costly on a BMW), and the Voyager 1700 (not enough standard features).
I've largely got it narrowed down to either a Roadmaster, Road Glide Ultra, or Cross Country Tour. I'm looking for first-hand experience with any of these three bikes, what you liked/disliked, etc. Any input from the passenger side would be most helpful, as I'm only going this route so the missus can tag along everywhere. Thanks.
Bikes? What is this, post-apocalyptic Australia?
Get the Hondabago. It's perfectly balanced and has every goo-gaw you could ever dream of.
Have you ridden one? There's weird headshake at like 35 mph, and a lot of people online complained about the tires cupping at
Huh, the rest of my comment was cut off. Well anyway I'm not convinced it's worth the money. The only thing I like about it is the electric reverse.
Tire cupping is due to incorrect suspension settings. In general, bikes come from the factory over sprung and under damped. Get the correct spring and change the damping settings and that problem will disappear, you'll get better tread wear, and it'll be easier to ride faster.
Shit, I can't believe I just did that. UNDER spring and OVER damped is what I meant.
Well now I'm dead because of your "advice". Thanks.
"Trust, but verify."

Hey, still a Toyota...
Why would you want to travel with a flabby middle-aged Trump voter?
Here's the one you want.
It's not the one he wants, but it is the one he needs!
That's another pet peeve of mine. I'm suddenly seeing dudes riding around all over the place on scooters, like, in the open, and not acting ashamed. When did it become not gay to be a dude and ride a scooter (in the US)? They're even starting to park in the motorcycle designated parking, as if they're people like me. FUCK YOU, scooter-riding person! Go back to Italy, or the gay brothel for homos where people ride scooters!
You're not scooter shaming them enough. This is all YOUR fault!
Italians should start complaining about cultural appropriation. Come on, Rufus, get on it!
Now I gotta wipe the IPA off my monitor!
Well, in FL I just assume all those old guys on the little scooters can't get a DL. IIRC, the way the law is written you don't need a license to operate, so they're popular with the felony DUI set.
DUI is my theory.
The worst part is when you're riding at night, see the head lights, do the biker wave and see it's some middle aged dude on a 9 grand scooter.
I don't know beans about bikes, but I like the looks of the Victory bikes.
Make sure you get something that reveals your wife's fat ass while you ride down the highway.
http://www.ducatiusa.com/bikes.....r/index.do
Sorry, that's the best you'll get from me, baggers are awful.
I used to be like you, until I took an arrow in the knee.
And actually I do now have a metal plate and some bolts in place of my old organic knee cap, after an accident on my SV1000. So after that, my wife got scared of riding, and if I want to keep doing it, I need to be able to include her. Which means bagger.
Also once Ducati pussed out and went to a wet clutch, they were dead to me. The coolest thing about them was the "box of rocks".
You can totally fix that.
Buy the BMW. Don't worry about the part expense. They are bullet proof. I have had my BMW for 12 years. During that time I have put over 30,000 miles on it. And other than batteries, brake pads and tires, the only repairs it has ever needed was a starter and a new turn signal switch. That is it. 12 years of hard use. That think is like a loyal Labrador. If I ever had to bet my life on a vehicle starting up and getting me as far as it could take me, I would take my BMW bike every time.
Thank you; you and Mad Scientist are the only ones to provide actual useful information.
As for the rest of you fucks...
The only flaw I know of in the BMWs is the transmission input shaft on some models is not long enough, and the splines don't fully engage. After 100k miles or so, you can wear that shaft pretty badly and have a lot of slop in the driveline. Fixing it requires replacing the shaft, which means a transmission rebuild and tearing down the entire rear end of the bike. If you get a bike that doesn't have this problem, they're bullet proof, and surprisingly easy to ride fast for such big machines. Take an R bike over a K bike.
I have an R. The great thing about Rs is with the cylinders sticking out like that, they get great airflow and run very cool. I think that is part of why those engines never seem to die. One of my neighbors has an R from the early 70s with over 120,000 miles on it. The thing still runs like a Swiss watch and has never been rebuilt.
Rs scare me a bit because I'm always afraid I'm going to touch that cylinder head down in a turn. I suspect the reality is I'm no where near fast enough to do so.
You can do it, but you have to be a hell of a lot more balls to wall rider than I ever will be.
It is funny how much further over you feel like you are than you actually are.
I'll never be Reg Pridmore on a bike. But in a car, with more practice, I hope to someday suck only as much as Pastor Maldonado.
I have gotten pretty good in a car. I can now solo at track days, which takes a decent amount of skill. I find I am quicker than a lot of people seem to have a lot more track time than I do. I would give anything to have enough money to go get an SCCA license and do club racing, but I doubt I ever will.
You don't need the SCCA to race wheel-to-wheel. All you need is ChumpCar.
I have been riding motorcycles for 50 years this month. My first bike was a Harley (1949 Hummer) so I traded in my 2001 Vulcan for a Harley Ultra Classic Low (I'm short).
I bought the full bagger because I'm going to take it to Alaska next summer and I needed the luggage space.
Pros: Water-cooled heads, wonderful sound system, GPS
Cons: The headlight seems woefully inadequate, although I need to adjust it. The bike is 200lb heavier than my Vulcan so I'm still getting used to it. Also the Ultra Classic is a bit short on storage outside of the bags. No place to store gloves or clears.
I looked at them all and wound up with the Harley.

Typical. Fire the people who actually work and keep the useless chaff. It may as well be a government agency.
(I know, quit giving them ideas).
This is just an advertising scheme for the next Avengers movie, when they later reveal that the staff stole the Infinity Gems!
I think I've identified the C-SPAN Caller Who Claims to Know Tim Kaine Says He's 'Manchurian Candidate." I believe that was former Richmond Councilwoman Shirley Harvey, a Grade-A wackaloon. [sanity warning: this is where the cray-cray lives]
Shirley Harvey is fantastic! RVA has sure had some doozies. Harvey, Reva Trammel, Chuck Richardson, Joe Morissey...
This is the South. We don't hide our crazy, we elect them.

Gotta give Joe some credit. He put a ring on that jailbait.
"Am I on the air?"

Adroit. Simply majestic. Not only does the caller successfully lampoon any semblance of patriarchal power structures yet unchecked, eyes narrow at CSPAN, but the caller also brings up questions of language and syntax that are too often stifled and marginalized by the white supremacy known as "manners." What is fuck? Who is fuck? These are important questions.

A scam biotech company is somehow, for some reason, still employing 60% of its staff.
Most of those are Holmes' bodyguards. She didn't need them before, but she sure as hell does now.
Scandal-tainted blood-testing company Theranos is closing all its labs and eliminating 40 percent of its staff.
What the hell is the other 60 percent doing?
Lawyers cleaning up the mess.
My first assumption would be... shredding hard drives.
Maybe they could hire members of Hillary's data-security team to smash them with hammers
Or wipe them with cloths.
I'm 100% sure none of this has anything else to do with cronyism. Nosiree, the medical testing industry loves them all the low cost competition they can get.

Re: Two Democrats in CA Race
Dear Reason,
Would you care to compare and contrast the voter approval rate for the legislature in CA with that in the US Congress? Maybe Democrats just run things better?
Just like Venezuela, having a one party state must lead to better outcomes.
Here's what it's like to live in this cesspool
http://www.ppic.org/content/pu.....516MBS.pdf
Back up a decade ago and you'll find that the approval ratings for the CA government were in the 9 to 16% that is common for the US legislature. That's when the place was run by a guy that you can watch run around in a loin cloth in the Conan movies. I got a charge out of it, but more in a sour, fuck-what-we're-people-thinking-kind-of- way. Not in an actual, hey, these people are doing a good job way.
I'm trying to recall how Conan originally was elected governor. Wasn't there some vote about Californians' satisfaction with his Democratic predecessor? I don't recall....
You don't have total recall?
I think Grey Davis might.
Maybe Democrats just run things better?

Minneapolis may actually have surpassed Seattle and San Francisco with this one.
Go away.
Maybe Democrats just run things better?
Holy shit. No way you went there. Detroit and Baltimore must be gardens of Eden, then!
Oh, wait.
On another site ( I don't remember which) someone said.
Republicans are bad at governing, Democrats are good at governing badly.
Maybe that's what he means?
AmSoc,
Shouldn't you be in Venezuela by now beating the Capitalists up?
Look up 'most corrupt politicians in U.S. history' for kicks. Any list will have Democrats outnumbering Republicans; not to mention more have been locked up.
And it's also interesting to note that while the South is often a target of liberal elites and progressives, many of those states have historically been run by...Democrats.
How about the approval ratings of Congress when Dems had the majority?
They were so good, the voters decided to toss a large number of them out of the House six years ago and they haven't been seen since.
"Maybe Democrats just run things better?"
-Guy who has said that the Soviets ran things better, complete with all the murder, starvation, and eventual collapse.
This is what gets reported out of debates when Californians are left with two Democrats to choose from for a Senate seat.

BREXIT CLAIMS FIRST VICTIMS
Meanwhile, down at the Credulous Imbecile News Service:
Yet still, police couldn't locate a single clown to question, leaving people to wonder whether this was a hoax, a marketing ploy, or simply child's play.
But if it is all an elaborate ruse, roughly a dozen other cities are in on it ? and some officials are worried there will be a violent end to the clown sightings. And in the five weeks since clowns popped up in Greenville, the pandemic has spread.
-------
As campus safety officials in Pennsylvania pointed out in their notice, the "creepy clown" situation is becoming a national phenomena. Unfortunately, the situation is nothing new. In 1981, "sinister" clowns were seen in Boston and neighboring towns throughout New England. The clowns, who harassed small children, were never seen by adults. They would coax children into vans with candy, usually driving alongside children walking down the street or in front of schools. The Phantom Clowns, as they were dubbed by cryptozoologist Loren Coleman given their allusive nature, spread to Kansas City, Denver, Omaha, and Pennsylvania. Since the 1980s, clowns have made appearances across the country, usually in the weeks and months leading up to Halloween.
Now, that's how you do journalism, kids.
Tim Curry! It all points to him!
That's satire, right? Fact that it cites cryptozoolgist should be a tipoff.
Fucking Poe's Law...
Canadians call him to talk about school shootings.

"In Alabama, seven people are facing felonies for making a terrorist threat,"
... Yeah... that settles it in my mind. This isn't the real world, it's a satirical parody world of some other universe. A universe where sense and logic are at least occasional. We're that universe's South Park.
The Phantom Clowns, as they were dubbed by cryptozoologist Loren Coleman given their allusive nature....
Well see, there's the problem - clowns aren't allusive, you're thinking of mimes.
No, mimes are illustrative.
TOP TWO MUTHFUKAS!!!! Thats what you get! The LP fought that hard, it was a brutal loss.
Well given that it's a One-Party State, why not? You might actually not know who wins three months in advance.
Honestly the system they have is probably a good one in any other context.
Just in a place full of complete idiots it causes a one-party state. But hey, the idiots will be happy with it.
I'm on the record as a fan of top-two run-off in any election where a candidate doesn't get 50% of the vote.
Just...one nominee per political party, please. Run as independent or something.
Approval Voting is truly the best combination of ease and accuracy. Party agnostic.
There are plans under consideration in the United Kingdom to force all businesses there to list all foreign workers they employ or do business with.
Businesses that employ foreigners will have paint Pepe the Frog on their door.
Not that they're going to do anything with those lists. They just wanted to know. That's all. Idle curiosity.
Saw the video and from my own independent research I can confirm. That is in fact a dab. I thought this was just a spelling bee thing.
I refuse to get woke on this stupidity.
You sound woke af. Are you sure you're not woke?
Ugh, I watched. It looks like they're sniffing their armpit stank.
Nagelfluh, noun, the sound retarded children make while flailing their arms around.
Go ahead, act surprised, I dare ya.
In their new book What Washington Gets Wrong, Ginsberg and Bachner report that the overwhelming majority of D.C.'s Beltway Insiders think the American public is pitifully uninformed on government policy. 72 percent of those governing officials think the public has little or no knowledge about policies to aid the poor. 71 percent believe that they have little or no knowledge about science and technology. And across eight different policy areas, never more than 6 percent of those surveyed thought the public possessed a "great deal" of knowledge on the topic.
With such a low opinion of the American public, perhaps it is not surprising that the vast majority of these political insiders believe they should ignore public opinion. At least 78 percent of those surveyed thought that actions in all eight policy areas should not always or even mostly heed popular sentiment.
"I'm not stupid. YOU'RE stupid."
Well think about it. These are generally narcissistic people who think they know how to run things based on powerpoint slide data. Their most common interaction with the public is with the most rabid individuals (your letter to the editor type) who are actually motivated enough to make contact with them. It's no surprise they consider themselves superior.
Intelligent, reasoned people stay the hell away from DC.
Look Brooks, with the kind of track record of success these people have, can you really blame them? How could bankrupting the richest civilization in history, destroying a 225 year old form of Republican government and bringing the world to the bring of world war not go to your head a little bit?
the overwhelming majority of D.C.'s Beltway Insiders think the American public is pitifully uninformed on government policy. 72 percent of those governing officials think the public has little or no knowledge about policies to aid the poor. 71 percent believe that they have little or no knowledge about science and technology.
This is probably about accurate. I think what those surveyed likely don't realize is that they themselves lack much of that knowledge themselves, especially with respect to science and technology.
Once you scratch the surface of understanding government policy, there really is no need to dig deeper.

But here it would actually be a type of Rickroll, which is still as fresh as it gets.
The one on the college football playoff that was done a couple years ago was hilarious.

PSA For PC gamers: the Humble Bundle store has a sale on Medieval-themed games which includes Crusader Kings 2 Collection (game plus all the DLC except Charlemagne and Black Death). You get a Steam key, and you can set a portion of the sale to go to a charity of your choice (from a list, but the list is yuuuuge).
Restore the Roman Empire? Re-create the Zoroastrian Persia? Forge Axum into a world power? Send your Viking plundering, and revitalize the Norse religion to combat the incursion of Christianity? Run a mercantile city-state and battle for supremacy over trade routes? And lots more you can dick around with.
Sorry, if I can't pop off micro-nukes under the shattered dome of the US Capitol, I'm not interested.
I lose interest when my firstborn Cynical Lesbian daughter succeeds my character in a primogeniture, only to have the underlings change the inheritance right under my nose.
Crusader Kings II: The world's greatest genocide and incest simulator.
I was legitimately shocked, four rulers into my Eastern Roman Empire playthrough, when I tried a diplomatic focus and soothing egos of dissatisfied nobles instead of plotting to murder them, them becoming super-unhappy, me revoking their titles so they'd revolt and I could put them down. Somehow number of murder plots against my Empress nosedived, and I haven't had a revolt in years. Who knew?
Violence solves everything.
Somehow number of murder plots against my Empress nosedived, and I haven't had a revolt in years. Who knew?
Not for nothing that Louis XIV turned the court of Versailles into a game of survival-by-etiquette-and-obsequiousness. Instead of trying to stroke the egos of various nobles, get them competing with each other for the chance to literally wipe your ass in the proscribed manner after you shit, and they suddenly won't have a lot of time to plot your overthrow and you won't have to execute them.
What a demeaning boring place his court must have been. You go from having a nice chateau out in the beautiful French countryside being lord of all you can see, to competing to see who gets to hand the King his riding boots when he goes hunting. God that must have sucked.
Having all the hot chicks from the entire realm gathered up in the same place takes the edge off, I bet.
I always thought it was hilarious that the person in the best graces of Henry VIII was typically the one who had to clean out his shitter every day. Talk about your mixed blessings.
CK2 is excellent. I will forever remember the time I lead the Viking Irish Protestant Crusades under the auspices of the Fraticelli Pope Conan against the damn Papists and their wealth-filled monasteries...
The latest patch fixes the biggest annoyance - you can change some settings before you start a game, and one of them is 'Disable Defensive Alliances'. That one doesn't even block achievements (presumably, you can be screwed if one of your large neighbours goes on a roll and you can't create a defensive pact against them).
I'm reluctant to load my save game, because I got my Eastern Roman Empire at over 99% threath, just because I took over Italy, and then created Kingdom of Jerusalem. So now, if I want to conquer three counties in Tunisia I lack to restore the Roman Empire, I will be attacked by 76 countries. Yes, all of world's pagans, Christians and Muslims, from Britain to Indian border, are sworn to attack me if I attack one of them!
Threat decays at a reasonably fast pace, so it's not a big deal if you are strong and the end of the game isn't imminent. It reduces 2.4% per year and you only need to get it to drop to 74.9% if you are attacking another religion (assuming yours accounts for the bulk of the pact) or 49.9% to only fight one of the religious pacts at a time. Further, if you are going for only 3 counties at a time, just make sure to take them quickly (>10x defending troops and you can assault instead of siege without great loss to speed things up) and you can have the war wrapped up before the pact troops even arrive to fight. Also, if your leader has lots of unmarried kids, marry them off to the close relatives of the strongest states you don't want to fight to create non-aggression pacts, which removes them from the defensive pacts against you.
OK that helps. I'm sure I'll 99% instantly (winning a holy war, then doing the Rome thing) but so worth it!
So now, if I want to conquer three counties in Tunisia I lack to restore the Roman Empire, I will be attacked by 76 countries.
This is new with Conclave and Paradox always pulls this shit with their DLC, something in it is almost always ridiculously overpowered, then they gradually nerf it to hell. It used to be republics and Norse pagans, then nomads in Horse Lords, now they've determined that the players with over 400 hours are themselves overpowered, and threat is designed to slow them down. I expect it to get nerfed next patch, again.
As I mentioned, latest patch lets you turn it off in settings before you start the game, and it won't even disable achievements.
I mean I understand, but it's a bit much that West Francia in 1024 gives a fuck if Byzantium attacks Abbasids or some horse tribes north of Crimea.
The problem with it is that it's a mechanic from Europa Universalis 4 that they tacked on to Crusader Kings. In EU aggressive expansion is a mechanic that diplomacy is designed around and it can cause large Coalitions to form a la the Napoleonic Wars to counter rapid expansion, particularly in Europe and especially the HRE. It's basically the best way to counter players being good at the game, and Crusader Kings lacks a similar mechanic to stop you from completely snowballing (holy wars are probably the closest thing to it). So they slapped this on. Although admittedly I did think they needed more options for different religious groups to have alliances based on regional interests (historical cases like Georgia and the Ayyubids just aren't possible).
2 hours left at work.
Whos getting BF1?
I'm interested but not at release, and not at least until French DLC (fucking EA, seriously? Second largest Allied army is DLC and the largest is not even on the roadmap?) is out. Bonus points if I can get Serbian army decals for French gear...
EA can suck a bag of dicks, but i still hand them a wad of cash for battlefield. The premium game they play is terrible.
Ill let you know how it goes at release.
Scandal-tainted blood-testing company Theranos is closing all its labs and eliminating 40 percent of its staff.
It's a damn shame this woman lost her company just when we were on the cusp of getting woke to the idea that science itself is sexist*, what with its unconscionable demands for rigorous reason and logic and critical thinking. I trust somewhere some feminist scholar even now is making the connection and developing a critical theory of why business is just as sexist as science, what with its unconscionable reliance on math and economics and finance for determining whether or not an enterprise is successful.
*It should go without saying that "sexist" encompasses "racist" and "homophobic" as well as "triggering", "problematic", and "orthogonal rectitude".
Planned Parenthood to Launch $30M Campaign Against Trump/Pence
If they've got $30 million to spend on campaigning, why do they need all that government money again?
Bingo
What an excellent question, which will never be asked by any Congresscritter.
"why do they need all that government money again?"
So that they can do a $30 million ad spend in support of Dems.

The latest thing that will totally derail the Johnson candidacy and send his supporters back to Hillary where they belong
I don't know what to even say to that. Talk about people with their heads planted up their asses.
Yes, careful analysis of foreign policy issues is what voters clamor for.
And in fact, the whole Syria issue demonstrates why both he and the other top third-party candidate in this race, Green Party nominee Jill Stein, remain on the political margins and haven't caught fire, despite an opening created by the record unhappiness with the two major-party candidates.
So Johnson and Stein would be well-advised to take advantage of the record unhappiness with the two major-party candidates by adopting the mainstream positions of the two major-party candidates? Brilliant! I guess that's why he makes the big bucks.
And in fact, the whole Syria issue demonstrates why both he and the other top third-party candidate in this race, Green Party nominee Jill Stein, remain on the political margins and haven't caught fire, despite an opening created by the record unhappiness with the two major-party candidates.
Oh! So it's a campaign issue that's been keeping them out of debates and off ballots this whole time! Interesting.
"Rogue" Black Hole Found
I thought those things evaporated without food...black holes not subject to entropy?
They do, but unless they are quite small, they receive more energy from the cosmic microwave background than they emit in Hawking radiation. And if they are at the edge of a galaxy there is gas and light around for them to absorb.
IIRC the evaporation rate of a black hole is proportional to the cube of the mass.
The massive black holes that develop at the center of galaxies will evaporate very slowly. Something like 10^70 times the age of the universe.
Now that's something to keep you awake at night!
At least it's not going to get here any time soon.
But still before my SUVs melt the icecaps, so there's that.
Based upon your definition of wandering it might not get here any time soon,
Wandering in terms of a black hole might be warp 5
These crazy Millennials and their Hillary-opposing ways - what's wrong with them>
Don't drop the punchline like that.
Here's a little secret - I don't always read the article if it looks like it's going to be productive of comments without my prompting.
"Some small, irreducible number of white millennials may go for Johnson "
irreducible ... is that somewhere between irredeemable and deplorable?
"white skin privilege"
Maybe I just don't want Hillary to continue murdering brown people.
non-sequitur
Republicanism isn't "Conservatism", and libertarians are an even greater stretch. If he wants to make a point about the decline of *actual conservatism* withing, there's probably one to be made...but poking at the doofus candidates among the GOP and LP doesn't demonstrate it.
Whereas the democratic party picked a real winner this go 'round.
What does it say of contemporary American liberalism that the Dem candidate is an unreconstructed sociopath, compulsive liar, and criminal?
It's so pervasive, it can win with that as its paragon?
Ah, yes, it's just the white ones who are too privileged to see the urgency of voting Hillary.
I know some of you are F1 fans. I did some light reading on a plane a few weeks ago and read Jacki Stewart's biography. It is a pretty good book. He really is the world's nicest guy. Anyway, in it he talks about the famous interview with Ayrton Senna and the question of Senna's legacy. He says two interesting things. First, Senna reached out to Stewart towards the end of his life concerned that F1 had gotten lax about safety and wanting advice on how to speak out about it. They actually became fairly close before Senna's death.
Second, in Stewart's very informed opinion, Senna was a genius driver but a lesser driver than Alain Prost. Stewart said Prost was the better all around driver and was a genius at setting up a car where Senna was not and benefited greatly from Prost's ability when they were teammates. Considering Senna's sainthood in the sport, I thought that was a pretty provocative take.
I'd agree with that. Senna's genius was he could drive around any setup problem, so he never learned how to fix them. Prost, on the other hand, could get the setup really dialed in, which is why he was so good on tires, but he was less able to drive around problems.
That had a lot to do with starting out in South America. Back then the top Brazilian drivers (Emmo, Senna, etc.) were really good at pushing the envelope, but didn't have the experience the Euro drivers did at communicating setup changes. The Euro drivers learned that in the underclasses (GP2, etc.) of formula racing, which the Brazilian drivers didn't get into until later in their careers.
On a semi-related note, I've finally given up on IndyCar. I was hopeful for them to finally be turning a corner on their stupidity since 1995, but they decided to go back to spec aero, so I gave up. It's too bad, because as somebody who grew up in Indy, I have a great respect for the history of the 500.
I keep hoping it will get better but it never seems to. And I grew up watching Indy as well. I have taken to following the American Le Mans series or whatever they are calling it these days. It is very good road racing.
24 hours of LeMons >
Reason meets Jalopnik. My universe is complete
And as far as communicating with the mechanics about car set up, Stewart was so dyslexic he could barely read as an adult. He says that fact that he was so dyslexic and so insecure about it allowed him to learn how to communicate and understand things in a more intuitive and less mechanical way, which he says was a great advantage when it came to both feeling how a car was handling and communicating that to the mechanics.
Stewart ended up with an amazing memory for little details as a way of coping with his dyslexia. He's a really fascinating guy.
And judging from his book, just a great guy. He doesn't have a trace of bitterness or animosity about anything. And he is incredibly humble. Not falsely modest. He doesn't pretend he wasn't great at what he did. But he hasn't seemed to let it go to his head at all. He seems to be good person. After reading that book he went to near the top of my list of famous people I would like to know.
Yeah, I adore Jackie. Pissed me off a few years ago when that moron Max Mosley was calling Stewart a "certified halfwit." Fuck you, Max.
Yeah, go win three world driving titles back when a quarter of the grid bought the farm every year and get back to me Max. Otherwise, piss off.
Senna is a little like Villeneuve in that he had a certain approach to racing that lent itself to being beloved. Villeneuve is still an absolute and total legend in Italy. And he had, what, just seven Grand Prix wins? He would drive with no bumper and still ride the car to bits.
Prost was always more like Schumacher in knowing a car and what he wanted out of it.
See also Jody and Tomas Scheckter (sp?). People like racers who put their balls to the wall.

In Texas, it's the Tweeter Laureate, and we have one!
On a side note, he was on Trump's list of possible SCOTUS nominees. In spite of some of his tweets.
Holy shit. Twitter's market cap is still $17B?
DNC Operatives, or actual Pro-Russian Locals? And does it matter?
Pro Russian locals. is my bet. New York is full of Russians and Russians as a general rule are nuts.
Yes BUT I have yet to meet one in the US (immigrated here not visiting here) that likes Putin at all. Now Brighton Beach is a big place, and some of the 2nd and 3rd Gens may be keen on him but in Denver, where there are 100k, I have not seen nor heard of one.
this
All the russians in NYC i know tend to be v/ anti-putin. Tho that doesn't preclude anyone still doing it. Its just a mistake to assume that "large russian population" is the easy answer. Besides, they don't live near manhattan bridge; they're out in coney island. And they're not so "political" so much, frankly, tending to be more on the Organized Crime tip.
344 days until the 184th Munich Oktoberfest
183rd Oktoberfest round-up
Lost and found
At the end of the Oktoberfest, the lost and found office had collected about 2915 items: 680 pieces of clothing, 660 wallets, 580 passports, 410 (smart)phones, 250 glasses, 220 keys, 90 bags and rucksacks, 55 umbrellas and canes, 55 pieces of jewelry and watches and 15 cameras.
Notable finds were: One pair of brown and one pair of beige high heels, a pair of children's leather pants, black cotton trousers, one jeans, two novels "Nie wieder Blondinen" with a dedication in them, an iPad, two GoPros, a pink camera, a doctor's certificate for work disability for the duration of the Oktoberfest, one box of Paracetamol, two hearing aids, 510.10? in cash and a municipal time card. One gentleman claimed to have lost his "old lady", but could not be helped at the lost and found office.
Priorities.
Your cultural insensitivity to the time honored tradition of Lunar German Alcoholism is noted.
Had the Rhinegeist Oktoberfest last night.
It was...lacking. Okay, but not the best of even the underperforming American versions.
Tried three different "Oktoberfest" beers from American craft brewers last night. Not one tastes anything like festbier. One was essentially an IPA and the other two were worse. I expect craft brewers to understand that there is a distinct style. It's like brewing a bock beer and calling it an IPA. Words mean something.
*hurk*
I need to take notes on which Oktoberfest beers I like. I forget if I love or hate the Shiner version. I typically fall back on the Sam Adams because although it's not great, it's not horribly disappointing either. When you pick one off the shelf, horribly disappointing seems to be the standard.

But if immigrants aren't weakening wage growth and job prospects, who is? Perhaps no group bears more responsibility for the plight of the middle class than billionaires. An IMF study confirms that increasing inequality, especially at the very top of the wealth and income scale, is weakening economic growth.
------
We now know what we have long suspected, thanks to political science research published at Princeton University: Political decision-making in this country is driven by corporate and ultra-wealthy elites, not by the democratic majority. This oligarchical usurpation of influence has led office holders at all levels to implement policies that kill jobs, depress wages and increase inequality.
These policies include government spending cuts, tax giveaways to the wealthy and corporations, bad trade deals (which Trump says he opposes; the team suggests otherwise) and economically destructive deregulation.
Billionaire cash is also impeding efforts to reduce the climate change and environmental destruction that has already caused irreparable harm to the planet ? harm that could rapidly accelerate if the climate-denying Trump becomes president.
If it weren't for billionaires, we'd all be rich.
Bill Moyers is a douche. Always has been.
No one should even mention Bill Moyers without also mentioning that his job in the 64 Johnson campaign was to out and blackmail gay Goldwater staffers. Moyers is an amoral piece of shit.
Wait, what? Never heard of this before.
It is true. He admitted it.
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_an.....oyers.html
[Moyers'] part in Lyndon Johnson and J. Edgar Hoover's bugging of Martin Luther King's private life, the leaks to the press and diplomatic corps, the surveillance of civil rights groups at the 1964 Democratic Convention, and his request for damaging information from Hoover on members of the Goldwater campaign suggest he was not only a good soldier but a gleeful retainer feeding the appetites of Lyndon Johnson.
He is a piece of shit.
Wasn't questioning its truth, just saying I've somehow never heard about it before.
Seriously, WTF.
Funny how that got thrown down the memory hole once he started working for PBS. I am sorry but that is not the kind of stuff that should ever be forgiven and the person who did it allowed back into public life. But rules are for proles not Leftists.
There is more
These weren't the only Moyers White House homo-hunts. On Commentary's blog, Jason Maoz quotes former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Laurence Silberman, who wrote in the Wall Street Journal in 2005 that weeks before the 1964 Johnson-Goldwater election, Moyers "was tasked to direct [FBI Director J. Edgar] Hoover to do an investigation of Goldwater's staff to find similar evidence of homosexual activity. Mr. Moyers' memo to the FBI was in one of the files."
Let's also not forget that he tried to pin it on the CIA when confronted with the memo. It was the threat of an investigation that made him confess.
And he gave the approval on the Daisy ad.
What a douche.
Those poor poor people who run our country. They just can't help themselves. They have to give away our tax dollars to the highest bidder or they won't get elected!
What, is this some crazy theory that power-holders value large chunks of money more than they do individual votes?
Billionaires! I hate those guys!
To be fair Moyers didn't write this...though looks like someone crazy (thinking Gary Busey in Entourage)
But if immigrants aren't weakening wage growth and job prospects, who is? Perhaps no group bears more responsibility for the plight of the middle class than
Ima go with "federal, state, and local governments, which have erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance."

I just picked up stone's enjoy by 10.31 Tangerine IPA. its very good, and i think it tastes closer to heady topper than my roommate. Its practically a double ipa but its very smooth. Go get a 6 pack.
Did any part of your beard get a taste? - whiskey drinker
Beer, whiskey, rum.
I say i dislike tequila, but im a liar.
I like bushmills black label, but recently got hooked on knob creek rye. Any suggestions?
The problem with Tequila is it just picks up where it left off the last time you had it.
Whiskey, Scotch, vodka, beer(occasionally).
I liked Bulleit rye...but not usually a rye drinker. My favorite bourbon is Knob Creek. Bushmills rocks. Maker's Mark is good. Kind of at a loss right now 'cuz I'm at work and my memory is shot from actually doing something.
Also, yes. Shaving is for chumps.
True. - chump that can't grow cool beard
To be fair, this is my first attempt at a beard. But I am way to young to complain.
Rock it proudly, just as long as you don't put glitter in it.
What about bacon bits? Or a bacon scented shampoo?
I'm neutral on the whole shaving thing. I love my beard and look better with my beard, but there ain't nothing quite like the feel of silvertip badger whipping up a warm lather on your face, followed by a Feather blade in your vintage Gillette TTO, all topped off with some Clubman aftershave.
Since I like my beard, only part of my face gets that treatment.
Im not a militant beard person. All are welcome.
[insert moderate Scotch whisky snobbery]
Glenlivet or gtfo. (yes it is mid priced, but I loves it)
Had an Indian, from India, whisky the other day... it was damn good.

Mid shelf is my top.
Eh, I'm more of an Islay guy, myself. But I get that people like milder Highland scotches.
Jura. The wife prefers Laphroaig or Lagavulin.
Dang.
Which Laphroaig?
Usually the 10yo which means that's what I normally get her. If my funds are a little better, then it's Lagavulin.
Your roommate tastes like HT?
Sometimes, rob!
Bought some Anchor Go West IPA yesterday. Not expecting anything special, but I hadnt tried it. And its Anchor, so it wont suck.
i think it tastes closer to heady topper than my roommate
Phrasing?
I see Weyerbacher's Sunday Mol? Stout is available.
That sounds good.
I took the enjoy by as a challenge. It's all gone.
I've never tried Heady, but my friend has a can waiting for me down in the OC. It's just a matter of getting down there.
Its one of two things i miss about living in burlington. Heady and switchback. I will say its better fresh, like the enjoy by.
More crazy:
Right-wing corporations and billionaires are conducting class warfare on the 99 percent and environmental warfare on the planet. That's why we need to enact a new, broad agenda: higher taxes on the wealthy, an increased minimum wage, strengthened workers' rights, sweeping environmental measures and greater government spending for critical needs like infrastructure health and education.
To safeguard democracy, we'll also need fundamental campaign finance reform.
Of course. Let's get right on that, shall we?
That will totally work this time!
Yeah, nothing safeguards democracy like giving the State total control of campaign funding.
Government Wastes $300m on Gun-Crime DB Which No One Uses
naturally = WaPo journalist passes on the consensus Government view - that the problem isn't the stupid Top Down strategy, or wasteful misdirected spending.... its the thousands of police departments who fail to follow the Fed's lead, and clearly the program needs MOAR FUNDING
Once they see the potential for long term benefits
My god. It's so simple. They just aren't thinking rightly.
I was gonna say, pissing away $300 million on a nation-wide database loaded with all kinds of data sounds like a bargain to me. Especially since it's actually running in some capacity.
uh, ever heard of the term, "Boiling the ocean"?
it tends to be the problem with any "big-data projects" w/ criminal stuff. they end up wasting 90% of their resources on 10% of the problem... which ends up simply wasting people's time they could otherwise be spending on more practical concerns.
good data-use tends to be granular, time-sensitive, and bottom up; sure, its all stored and can be used for reference, but too often 'data projects' begin to compete with the actual mandate of the institution
I know - I'm just shocked when a govt. DB program comes in under $500mil.
Doubly so if it actually runs. Having it perform an actual useful function is unicorn-land.
I feel you. Often the best you can hope for, a la "The Good Shepherd", is someone to ensure the inevitable "huge fuckups" are kept as small as possible.
God, how I miss PM Zoolander's Preening For Cameras and Posing For Magazines period... Last week, come back, please!
For NIBIN to work as a preventive strategy, police must investigate shots fired at stop signs as aggressively as they chase killers, said current and former top ATF officials.
Holy shit, are you kidding me?
Its typical federal moaning about how their giant wasteful project is being bottlenecked by those short-sighted local police departments and their own selfish prioritization of resources
Have you ever received those random spam phone calls saying the IRS may be filing a lawsuit against you?
Well, someone might have finally caught up with those folks.
Now here is someone worthy of a drone strike. Just drone strike them.
I did get that call, tried to report to the BBB and they referred me to the FCC. I hope they get a shitty cell.
I got a new one the other day. Instead of it being a computerized voice it was an actual human being with a very thick Indian accent. Fuck all the people who do that.
I don't usually mock religious practices, but when I get one of these dicks that won't even give me their business address I say "Can you hang on a second, I've got to finish this juicy steak...". Pisses them right the hell off.
Got calls from them a couple of hours ago. So they may be up at a new location already.
I get them at work, forwarded through local places. Itll say Erie, colorado on the call id.
When fired, a gun will leave dents, pings, and grooves on an ejected shell casing. Firearms examiners say these marks are like fingerprints, unique to the gun that made them.
BUT
The theory underlying NIBIN ? that every gun leaves its own fingerprint ? has never been scientifically proven. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has a long-term research project underway to answer that question. But most experts think the basis for NIBIN is sound, a belief borne out by the tens of thousands of confirmed matches the system has identified over the years.
It might be bullshit, but we should lobby for more money and people.
The latest tracks on Matthew look pretty bad:
South Florida is getting really really really lucky here. The Space Coast has never seen a storm like this either.
The loop-back I'm not worried about. The same models that are predicting the loop back are predicting that it's going to be torn to shreds by shear and will be a minimal tropical storm at best by the time it makes it back in this vicinity.
