Offended Cornell Students Freak Out After Football Coach Tweets Sombrero Picture

'I expect a response to this from the Minority Liaison.'

Cornell University Football Coach Roy Istvan apologized to students who were offended by an image he tweeted: an image of two of his players wearing sombreros.

Why were they wearing sombreros? Istvan awards the big hat to the player or players who best represented team spirit on the field after a game.

This practice has displeased some members of MEChA de Cornell, a Mexican student group.

"They're appropriating a culture that isn't theirs and using it as a joke," wrote one student on MEChA's Facebook page, according to Campus Reform. "It's disgusting and I'm ashamed that you can't see that."

The Facebook page's administrators posted a link to Cornell's Bias Response Team and encouraged students to file a complaint against Istvan. (BRTs, readers will recall, are a threat to free expression on dozens of campuses.)

Another person demanded action from the student-government.

"What is your [the Student Assembly's] response to this?" asked the student. "So many of your fellow students' culture is being used as a prop consistently on this campus and it is supported publicly by this university. Will you pass a proposition to recommend a faculty/staff diversity and cultural sensitivity training? Or will you just push it under the rug as you did the Cinco de Octubre event? I expect a response to this from the Minority Liaison."

You'll be hearing from the Minority Liasion! was apparently enough of a threat to persuade Istvan to apologize.

"I am truly sorry for the cultural insensitivity and understand how our expression of pride came at the expense of others in the Cornell community," he wrote on Twitter.

The image was initially retweeted by Cornell's official Twitter account, which prompted one member of student-government to seek an apology from the university.

"Publically supporting this is absolutely unacceptable, and I request that you remove this immediately," the student wrote.

Some students in the Facebook group didn't care about the sombrero-wearing. Other students weren't outraged. Still others were outraged about the outrage.

Perhaps the photo should have been captioned: "No One Was Harmed, Made Unsafe, Triggered, or Microaggressed During the Wearing of This Sombrero."

Anyone want to launch a Kickstarter to bring Lionel Shriver to Cornell?

The proper response should be to all those grievance mongers: Fuck You

Seriously only at a university could you have a position as useless as a “Minority Liaison”

People can wear whatever damn hats they want. Cultural Appropriation is one of the biggest dumb-fuck ideas so come out of progdom, and no one should even be entertaining it

They have Diversity Officers in corporate America now.

Somehow HR has become a haven for these types of folks. What happened to having one paper pusher in the office who helped you change your benefits elections when you have a baby? Why do we need a diversity officer and a lifestyle officer and a fun at work officer and a healthy choices officer? Save that money and put some beer in the fridge instead!

        1. thom   9 years ago

Why do we need a diversity officer

Because a business or organization, for whatever reason (and there are good ones), may make diverse hiring a specific goal of the enterprise. Customers often want this as well.

for whatever reason (and there are good ones), may make diverse hiring a specific goal of the enterprise.

That “good reason” certainly isn’t for business growth.

            Gender diversity was positively associated
            with group bonuses in business
            units with a people-oriented organizational
            culture, diversity-focused
            human resource practices
            , and customer-oriented
            business strategy but
not in units that lacked those specific
            cultures, practices, and strategies.

            7. Racial diversity was negatively related
            to performance
            in business
            units with competitive organizational
            cultures, growth-oriented business
            strategies,
            and training-focused
human resource practices but not in
units that lacked those specific cultures,
            practices, and strategies.

          4. Ron   9 years ago

and you need a diversity officer for that? it can’t be any harder or different than hiring other competent people. and if the problem is with existing workers not accepting new people there is always the door for them.

            1. loveconstitution1789   9 years ago

Its how these dipshits were raised. Raised to focus on faux problems to avoid real problems and because these dipshits are not educated enough to know what real problems are.

          5. MarkLastname   9 years ago

Because it helps avoid law suits for (usually nonexistent) discrimination.

        2. @TheBitcoinimist   9 years ago

Well, one big reason is that DOJ will look “favourably” upon your business for spewing out the gov’t line on harassment, diversity, gender, etc.

If your company has a “policy” and everyone signs it, and there are diversity employees, and all of the rest of it, and you push that BS from time to time, when someone gets past the EEOC (surprisingly, given the ideologues that work there, that is a very high bar) and the inevitable lawsuit comes, in theory the skrewing that you will inevitably get will be significantly less punitive and smaller in scope.

What kills me, is that companies will allow some people to treat others like crap, hotheads, abusive bosses, mood-swingers, you get the drift. Generally, no one will say a word to them, even though that crap is quite damaging to the business. BUT, say “boobs” to the wrong person who whinges to HR, and you’re fired.

That’s stupid. Not that you’re fired, that’s just risk mitigation in avoiding litigation (which still sucks), but leaving actual idiocy to run rampant makes zero sense.

Oh, and if any of you honestly believe that the larger companies don’t have quotas, you’re being naive.

      2. toolkien   9 years ago

When I bust out “corpora-fascism/fascistic”, it’s not Godwin-esque hyperbole – either for attention or exaggeration. The impetus for these positions is to stave off bureaucratic fines, or lawsuits, or mandated for “supply chain” certification, or whatever. Going “full Godwin”, I read Rise and Fall of the Third Reich as a kid/teenager. A goodly portion of that sizable tome was spent on the “Nazification of Germany”, the systematic push down of authority and control. That’s what’s happened in corporate America today. Even small companies such as I work for it’s replete throughout – perhaps inconsistently applied. But we, as a supplier to government contracts and large “public companies”, have to prove certain policies, and those policies are reviewed via the ISO process. Even a bumfuck little company like mine is fully in the talons the “grasp of the eagle” (if you’re gonna Godwin, then GODWIN). And to go beyond Godwin, Fascism’s model was ancient Imperial Rome, with all of it’s bureaucratic bullshit, and one should read Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire for that analysis. Depressing how NOTHING has changed.

        1. Siegzon   9 years ago

Agree on your analysis. Godwin’s law is meaningless. Nazi Germany has the best ACCESSIBLE modern records of any totalitarian state. Not to learn from that is to repeat that history.

    3. Chipper Morning Wood   9 years ago

If you extend this cultural appropriation idea to its logical conclusion, by taking a broad interpretation of the term “culture,” you are basically opposed to the spread of ideas. In fact, if you assume one of the main forms of communication is the spread of new information, you are basically opposed to communication. I think there may in fact be such a thing a peak derp, and we are nearing the summit.

I’m putting on this fucking hat to recognize your contribution to the US. If it offends you that we want to celebrate your people’s contributions, petition the powers that be to cease recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Publically supporting this is absolutely unacceptable, and I request that you remove this immediately,” the student wrote.”

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   9 years ago

That is pretty much how it was when I was in college and grad school; the attitude was you are lucky to be here so shut the fuck up, and you’re little more than a roach, by the way.

The bug kind of roach, in case you were wondering.

What is different is that now these immature, pampered, entitled, and indulged little creatures who were brought up on a steady diet of diversity bs now have the power of the US government to support them through Title IX and the OCR; then they go to school and use it as a cudgel against anyone in authority or who will otherwise make a likely target for their bitchy little grievances.

    Here’s what I find offensive:

MEChA is an Hispanic separatist organization that encourages anti-American activities and civil disobedience. The radical members of MEChA who refer to themselves as “Mechistas,” romanticize Mexican claims to the “lost Territories” of the Southwestern United States — a Chicano country called Aztlan. In its national constitution, MEChA calls for self-determination by its members to liberate Aztlan. MEChA’s national constitution starts out: “Chicano and Chicana students of Aztl?n must take upon themselves the responsibilities to promote Chicanismo within the community, politicizing our Raza with an emphasis on indigenous consciousness to continue the struggle for the self-determination of the Chicano people for the purpose of liberating Aztl?n.”

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   9 years ago

      1. Brett L   9 years ago

        They did beat the French.

        1. Gadfly   9 years ago

Saying your country beat the French isn’t an accomplishment unless that army was led by Napoleon. The French haven’t had a very good track record since they over-threw the Ancien Regime.

Do you know why the Champs-Elysee is lined with trees?
So the Vikings, Prussians, Austrians and Germans could march in the shade.

    4. Calidissident   9 years ago

I find it funny that they claim to emphasize “indigenous consciousness” while blatantly ignoring the fact that the American Southwest was only Mexican before it belonged to the US because of Spanish colonization and territorial claims that Mexico inherited. The only Native Americans in the area who would have considered themselves Mexican at the time were those who had been assimilated into the colonial settlements, which was a very small % of the native population and was often the result of brutal coercion.

      1. Akamai   9 years ago

The “indiginous” were Stone Age people who had not advanced to the Bronze Age level, much less the Iron Age level. They had no written language, nor had they invented the wheel!

        What “indigenous consciousness” pray tell?

      2. MarkLastname   9 years ago

Yeah, I’m guessing most Mexicans have more Spanish than Indian blood given how few of the Indians survived the initial onslaughts and epidemics. It’s interesting that they think they get to choose to identify with the ‘oppressed’ side of their ancestry but have no obligation to identify with the ‘oppressor’ side that raped the other side.

    5. Ron   9 years ago

Do they not know that probably 99% of them are of spaniard ancestry. the cultures they claim to be related to were just about wiped out by diseases.

    Comment on the FB post:

For those who are commenting on this post calling MEChA sensitive and/or otherwise critiquing this post, no one told you to comment on this thread. You could have just let it go, but instead you chose to react. This would, if I am using the terminology correctly, make you trigglypuffs and special little snowflakes.

    Holy fucking derp.

Aren’t these students appropriating Ivy League culture? Doesn’t look like self-determination to me.

Exactly what sort of rights can non-mestizo Americans expect in MEChA’s Aztlan?

It’s a fucking hat. Educated people know that. University professors and students don’t.

  23. Brett L   9 years ago

Hopefully, the Cornell football team will stuff any Bias Response Team members they encounter into trashcans after giving them atomic wedgies, and then when a complaint is lodged, they can just claim it was “football culture” to do so.

  25. John   9 years ago

It is too bad kids today have no balls. The response to this would be to have “Sombrero Week” where everyone wears a Sumbero to class every day. If 500 Joes and Josephines showed up on campus one day wearing Sombreros, what would these ass clowns do about it?

    1. WTF   9 years ago

Same thing they’re doing now – whine and moan and stamp their feet and cry “oppression”.

    2. Quo Usque Tandem   9 years ago

They are immature children who know that they have the Obama Administration and all its minions [OCR, Title IX, etc. etc.] to support their grievances.

So everyone has to play like they want; as I said, immature children, who want the world in their image.

  26. Microaggressor   9 years ago

They’re appropriating a culture that isn’t theirs and using it as a joke

I don’t get the impression that it’s a joke. Methinks these snowflakes have an inferiority complex and project their subconscious belief that the hats are a joke, onto those football playing jerks.

Something about hearing the dog whistle means you are the dog.

I feel like cultural appropriation is a longstanding American cultural tradition and it deeply offends me that it isn’t respected and revered like it should be. /solemnly dons sombrero and lederhosen while listening to Indian music and eating sushi

        2) Sure, I’m not above appropriating the culture of Millenial journalists with great hair

    2. kbolino   9 years ago

The dirty secret none of these fucks want to own up to is that every culture of any significant size has appropriated the everloving shit out of other cultures. The only difference between “authentic” and “appropriated” culture seems to be whether it has outlived the people who remember where it came from.

      1. lap83   9 years ago

They are fast and loose with their definitions. It reminds me of the “I fucking love science” types. The natural order of things is great, unless you’re talking about humans, who are some kind of unnatural alien race or plague invading and ruining the earth. Humans are only natural when they want to be a different gender or when it comes to evolution.

  29. The Grinch   9 years ago

Apologizing is a tacit admission of wrongdoing and should never be done to these grevience mongering scum. Now they’ll hold this over his head and will be able to say “See, even he realizes he did something wrong so fire him.” It never works.

    1. esteve7   9 years ago

Leftists don’t get off on results, they get off on signalling and having bad doers apologize for their misdeeds.

Sorta how Mao and Stalin had the public apologies for anyone daring to question them.

Apologizing means you did something wrong and gives them the high they need to live in this world.

      1. Ron   9 years ago

its the “cultural revolution” American style. Hey I think they culturally appropriated that.

Have any of the grievance mongers taken keffiyeh-wearing progressive hipsters to task?

Not only do they appropriate the keffiyeh (aka gutra), they don’t even wear it correctly — clearly just vain virtue-signaling while masquerading solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

  34. Bill Dalasio   9 years ago

So, let me get this shit straight. At Cornell, the goddamned football team gets bullied around by a bunch of Women’s Studies and Comparative Lit majors?

Shit. Just eliminate the football team. That big a group of pussies is just going to embarrass them.

  35. creech   9 years ago

New sign at entrance to Cornell’s football stadium: “This game is American football. If you aren’t a native born American, you are not permitted to pass through these gates as Cornell doesn’t want to be complicit in allowing anyone to appropriate another’s culture.”

Living in Texas, I see Mexicans wearing cowboy hats all the time. It never occurred to me to get upset about this.

When I visited south China, everywhere I went I saw Chinese wearing cowboy hats and baseball caps. Being ignorant of the evils of cultural appropriation, I thought that was pretty cool.

They ride their tiny bicicletas to school

You know who else uses sombreros and ponchos as a joke? Fucking Mexicans. Does someone really think that hat is part of their sacred national costume or something?

You know what’s insulting to Mexicans? Assuming that brightly colored tourist sombreros are an integral part of their culture and that they are so fucking fragile that some American dude wearing it does some harm.

Pants were invented in ancient Persia–no one but Persians should be allowed to wear pants!! Coffee was domesticated in Ethiopia–only Ethiopians can drink coffee!! (there goes civilization)

  56. Sigivald   9 years ago

    MEChA, huh?

Unless they’re giant robots, I don’t care what the hell they think.

(PS. They’re also racial-identity nationalists*. They sing that fact from the rooftops, which is commendably honest.

    * You know, literally like Nazis or Klansmen or White Power types.

But for some reason they aren’t booed off campus as uncivilized bastards … because… well, I see two alternatives.

First, because the powers that be don’t take them seriously; patronizing them as “look how cute it is when the little brown people try to be racial nationalists!”.

Second, because people think that’s only bad when white people do it, rather than, well, racial nationalism being bad in itself.

Neither option is pleasant, but I think possibly the real answer is “both”.)

These whiny mofos might want to do something about the bigger sombrero-related problem: embarrassed white people having sombreros plunked on their head and a birthday song sung to them at every Mexican restaurant in America. Happens once every 45 seconds somewhere in the country. One is happening right now!

Well maybe not right now since it’s 8 am on the East coast and 5 on the West, but you know what I mean.

  62. Miter Broller   9 years ago

Here are the following things I want all non-United Statesians (didn’t want to use the ‘A’ word in case it would offend), to stop appropriating from my culture immediately, if not sooner:

    Eating at fast food restaurants
    Flying in planes
    Using cell phones
    Using PCs
    Wearing blue jeans
    Driving in cars
    Using digital cameras
    Playing baseball
Using the assembly line for manufacturing purposes
    Using communications satellites
    Using GPS
    Wearing running shoes
    Drinking Gatorade
    Using lasers for anything
    Playing basketball
    Using the polio vaccine
    Using fiber optic cables

Wfew! That’s a good start. Anyone who is non-United Statesian and is partaking of any of the above items, you are appropriating my culture and you must stop immediately. Thanks, in advance, for understanding!

?La gente va a ser ofendido por todo ahora para? Oops, I guess I should have said that in English rather than Spanish so I don’t offend anyone. Wait a second, I am Mexican American… never mind. Sorry if you are gonna get offended because a football player wears a cheesy ass, made for tourists, sombrero, you have either too much free time, a serious chip on your shoulder or are just a whiny, candy ass who is incapable of living in the real world. We have enough issues, real issues, to deal with without all the whimpering toddlers inventing more. I am sick of all these groups who act as if they speak for every member of a particular race or ethnic group because none of the @-holes speaks for me.

I remember in high school in SoCal when that Iranian hostage crisis was going on, some prankster put up some flyers that sponsored *Spit on an Iranian Week* by a non-existent club called ‘The Boys from Brea’ (an obvious riff on the then popular movie ‘The Boys from Brazil’. The admin went apeshit. Most of us were thinking, calm down. It’s satire people. None of us are going to treat the one or two Iranians at our school any differently than before.

The Mongols had those hats first. Then the Spanish. It’s what people tend to come up with in hot climates with burning sun.

In any case, since the hat originated in European cultures and Mexicans and Hispanics don’t see themselves as being culturally part of evil imperalist white Europeans, maybe it’s Mexicans who should stop using the hat?
