Curt Schilling Settles Rhode Island Lawsuit, Also Calls for Summary Executions for Terror Suspects
Disastrous financial dealings and flirtations with fascism set the stage for his planned run for the presidency.

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling—a once-beloved figure in New England after leading the pitching staff of the 2004 World Series Champions—continues his ignominious fall from grace.
According to The Boston Globe, "Schilling agreed to participate in a $2.5 million settlement" with Rhode Island authorities, who sued him and his business partners over a $75 million taxpayer-funded subsidy to his now-defunct video game company, 38 Studios. Rhode Island taxpayers, even after all the settlements, will still be on the hook for more than $50 million as a result of this fiasco, the Providence Journal reports.
In 2013, I reported for Reason on how this disastrous display of crony capitalism came to be:
Gov. Donald Carcieri (R-R.I.), term-limited and searching for a legacy after presiding over one of the worst state economies in the U.S., featuring long spells of double-digit unemployment and frequent last-place finishes in rankings of business friendliness. In a classic spasm of "do something, anything" government desperation, Carcieri made it his mission to lure 38 Studios from its headquarters in Maynard, Massachusetts to Rhode Island.
Using his bully pulpit as both governor and chairman of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC), a quasi-public agency whose mission is to promote business in the state, Carcieri pushed hard for 38 Studios to receive a $75 million taxpayer-guaranteed loan.
Each loan guarantee must be approved by the Rhode Island legislature, and when the votes were cast in 2010, only one lawmaker voted against it. Rep. Bob Watson (R-Greenwich) noted "a lot of red flags" in a "very risky" deal that was "too fast, too loose, and frankly, a scandal waiting to happen." Watson added "more often than not, politicians are very poor when it comes to making business decisions."
Watson is clearly on to something, at least in the Ocean State. Some legislators later admitted that they did not realize that the loan guarantee meant to stimulate Rhode Island business, was in fact, only going to stimulate one business, 38 Studios.
The Globe notes that Schilling referred to the state's investigation over his company's allegedly unethical business practices as a "fake ass witch hunt," and Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin cleared the company of criminal wrongdoing in June, saying "Bad politics, bad public policy, bad business decisions simply do not always rise to the level of criminal conduct."
Schilling, an outspoken Republican conservative, was fired from his job as a baseball commentator for ESPN earlier this year for repeatedly sharing social media memes which could reasonably be described as transphobic and Islamophobic. He's hinted at a run for political office, and eventually the presidency.
On his Facebook page yesterday, he offered a glimpse of what a Schilling Administration might look like. Responding to the bombings in New York and New Jersey and the ISIS-inspired mass stabbings in Minnesota, Schilling called for an immediate end to immigration or even "foreign nationals from entering this country via air," adding, "Unless an immigrant can PROVE beyond a shadow of a doubt no links with terrorism, they cannot come here."
He bizarrely called for "a version of the Berlin Wall on our southern border"—unsuprisingly not understanding that the Berlin Wall was built to keep East Germans from fleeing their prison-state, not to discourage immigration—and called for terror suspects to be executed without trial.
No word yet on whether or not President Schilling would establish a Department of Publicly-Financed Video Games.

TOP. MEN.
A wall to keep people out also keeps people in.
RE: Curt Schilling Settles Rhode Island Lawsuit, Also Calls for Summary Executions for Terror Suspects
Disastrous financial dealings and flirtations with fascism set the stage for his planned run for the presidency.
I honestly don't know why Schilling didn't run for president.
He has all the makings of a great one.
One only has to look at his contempt for the US Constitution, his love of fascism and inherently corrupt and possible criminal behavior patterns.
What more could the electorate want?
#TrumpkinsLivesMatter
That book isn't going to magically finish itself, fuckface.
Schilling is a loathsome person who should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
After President Kaine decides not to run in 2020, I can't wait to see how the Schilling-West race will go.
Rep. Bob Watson (R-Greenwich) noted "a lot of red flags" in a "very risky" deal that was "too fast, too loose, and frankly, a scandal waiting to happen." Watson added "more often than not, politicians are very poor when it comes to making business decisions."
Bob Watson for President!
He seems far too sensible to want the job, let alone campaign for it.
Good point!
And I can almost guarantee that he voted to approve the bill that created and funded the agency that doled out this money.
The Globe notes that Schilling referred to the state's investigation over his company's allegedly unethical business practices as a "fake ass witch hunt,"
Would that be a witch hunt that is itself fake, or a hunt for fake-ass witches?
Neither. It's a hunt for witches with fake asses.
LOL
Fake ass-witches? Not sure what they would be.
Practitioners of Wicca with gluteal implants. Do try to keep up.
Fake-ass witch-hunt?
Fake ass-witch hunt?
Fake-ass-witch hunt?
Don't fear the hyphen.
Reddit poster Paul Combetta AKA Hillary's Bleachbit Boy asking around the time her emails were subpoenaed whether it's possible to modify archived emails.
If this is true you have to be a very special kind of stupid to leave a Reddit trail of your crimes.
"What's the best way, hypothetically speaking of course, of getting rid of a human body, about a hundred and eight pounds?"
Gary Condit held an AMA?
And I love that he goes to reddit for help, and pretty much everyone is saying, "there's no established way to do that, because it'd be hella illegal."

Yeah, people post pictures and boasts of their crimes on Facebook and go to Reddit for legit legal advice.
And JT - get real friendly with a guy who runs a pig farm.
Hillary's IT braintrust might be deciding internet issues for all of us very soon.
After a bit of googling I found this evidence that Paul Combetta is the poster.
(VERY VIP) LOL
What a strange case this is. Pro athletes are usually so wise.
OT: fuhrer Merkle has a sad.
Darn refugees!
Translation 'I don't care what the citizens think, but damnit, now it's cost me votes!'.
Refugees: "Ohhhh, the Germans are mad at me, I'm so scared!
"Flittion with fascism....Berlin Wall"
Who knew East Germany wasn't Communist ?
The Soviet Union was a right wing capitalist country! Why do you think it failed!? Venezuela was doing so well until they went capitalist too!
Communism and Fascism are 99.999999% identical. The single point of difference between the two is who's name is on the property deed.
Please, let's not adopt the twisted language of SJWs. It's not "transphobic" to not want guys in drag in the women's restroom. It's not "Islamophobic" to notice all the crap associated with Islam.
That's exactly what I'd expect a transphobic Islamophobe to say!
Islamophobic is a funny one for me. The Islamists want non-Muslims (and the wrong kinds of Muslims) to fear Islam. Anyone who points this out is not being phobic of Islam. Those who refuse to criticize Islamism out of fear though...
Completely agree.
But Curt Schilling is still a horse's ass.
Coincidentally, Ahmad Khan Rahami was just taken into custody after a shootout with the police.
Does New Jersey have the death penalty?
I'm generally against the death penalty on principle, but I have to admit that the world would be a better place if Ahmad Khan Rahami was dead.
Oh, yeah, the teabagger, they got im. I posted a link in the Snowden article. Can we just send all the teabaggers to Gitmo now?
Excuse me, but the word "teabagger" is highly offensive and really shouldn't be used in polite society.
Now if can get back to some more appropriate topic--like calling for people's deaths?
"Polite society"? This is Hit'n'Run, you fuck.
"Oh, so sorry, Mr. Schilling, but the position of trash-talking populist, boldly un-PC, media-bashing presidential candidate has already been filled."
There will never be enough populist asshats to satisfy the American public. Curt Schilling will almost certainly follow the Donald Trump model:
He'll try to run for President under some loony, obscure party's banner and fail. His attempt will be mocked and eyes will roll. He'll then end up on some reality TV show for a decade and a half, showing people he's a kind of absurd circus clown who says idiotic things. And finally, once the show has run its course, he'll run for President as a Republican promising candy, unicorns, and dead Islamic Mexican girly-dudes to the adoring cheers of morons. And he'll almost certainly win.
No, he understands. Everyone advocating for a wall across the US-Mexico border understands that that wall will be used more to keep people in the US as keeping Mexicans out. Because you belong to America and leaving the US without permission is stealing from The People and tantamount to treason. There's no reason to leave unless you don't love the USA and if you don't love the USA then you deserve to be in jail.
If you don't hate all Mexicans and Muslims, you clearly hate America and are voting Clinton.
OT: I have been reading Richard Rhodes' Making of the Atomic Bomb (comprehensive is too mild a word, but it's a great book), and he talks a lot about all the Jewish & nominally Jewish scientists that fled Germany ahead of, and during, WWII.
Some of them were extremely prescient, and fled way ahead of the Nazis taking total control. Some were more optimistic and thought "The German people would never let bad shit happen", and they ended up either dead, expelled, or having to flee for their lives under false passports with no money.
So, how do you decide that things are getting bad enough that you would pack up and move to a completely different country, where you likely don't speak the language and have very limited professional prospects? How do you get out before it's too late? How does one look at the place where they've made a life and say "yep, it's gonna get real ugly up in here - I'm out"?
I guess the current politics here have left me wondering if some of us will have to make that decision someday.
Well, at least in America you have two sides: One that appears to hate the rich, white people, and men, and the other side that seems to hate dark people and anyone viewed as "weak." Then, there's the rest of us who think maybe it's cool to just not hate anyone.
I think the hope is that all of these balance out so you don't get a majority of people agreeing to destroy a particular smaller group. While the cavern between the SJWs and the alt-right miscreants seems to grow, they're at least at some kind of balance of evil nitwittery.
I take comfort in the fact that the SJW left and the alt-right are extremely loud but very small minorities that don't seem to be able to get much traction outside of their particular incubators.
The SJW left is getting traction by converting government to its incubator. Title IX? Serious discussion of flipping the burden of proof in rape cases?
Alt-right (at least the white nationalist, anti-Semitic pro-fascist kind) does not exist in any size that warrants fear in the United States. Hell, I'd argue that there's more 'traditional' racists, like KKK or Aryan Brotherhood members, than alt-right. The internet makes their numbers seem artificially inflated because you have alt-right members from both North American and Europe all in the same place. However, I do believe their numbers will grow with time as a result of both rebellion against traditional conservatism and young men embracing the identity their social justice opponents are casting on them.
Also important to note that the alt-right has a great deal more dogmatic arguments going on in it right now than the social justice crowd does (although they are starting to eat their own). The alt-right's too busy arguing amongst themselves about whether Christianity is the one true European faith or some horrible ideological cancer that destroyed Germanic paganism to be much of a threat. It's like the two communists parties up here in Canada, they've split their vote over a stupid ideological disagreement (in this case, Stalinists vs. Marxist-Leninists) that only they care about.
The alt-right's too busy arguing amongst themselves about whether Christianity is the one true European faith or some horrible ideological cancer that destroyed Germanic paganism to be much of a threat.
I larfed. Here's hoping the alt-right develops a Jezebel-type site to facilitate our amusement and mockery.
Their opinions on Nietzsche are great too. Half of them scream about him being responsible for the horrible nihilism of the modern world, and the other half say he's a true visionary of their white alpha male ubermensch utopia free of kikes and darkies. Neither seem to realize that Nietzsche was an anti-nihilist who hated anti-Semites and nationalism as a whole.
That's the thing - maybe the folks in Germany in, say, 1925-1930 were saying the same thing? What about the people in Czechoslovakia and Austria?
It's hard to know if the current atmosphere in this country will amount to a whole lotta nothing, or a whole lotta fences and Stasis and Kristallnachts. Is the current climate of Fascism just a passing fad, or a growing trend?
I just can't see a racially obsessive form of fascism growing strong in the United States. America has always been too divided culturally, and they lack the long-standing ethnic history to draw from (try getting a white nationalist Irishman from Boston to support a return to America's Anglo-Saxon roots).
Now, a more generalized fascism a la Peronism or vaguely similar to Kemalism (just replace Kurds with Muslim or Mexican) I can see possibility happening.
^This.
That was an excellent book. I recommend it to anyone interested in science and history. His follow-up book, Dark Sun, is about the science, politics, and spying involved in developing the hydrogen bomb and is also quite good. It may just be me, but Mr. Rhodes seems to start sliding into lefty bias with this book, and I seem to detect it even more in his latter work.
Yeah, it's fantastic. I love that he starts all the way back with Planck and Rutherford. And the structure made it interesting - the way he used Leo Szilard as a common thread through each "story", whether it was scientific, social, or political.
I'll check out Dark Sun.
Doesn't matter, because if America goes down the shitter, there's nowhere to flee to anyway, and certainly nowhere that could stand up to them.
Well, at least in America Germany you have two sides: One that appears to hate the rich, white people, and men, Jews and the other side that seems to hate dark people and anyone viewed as "weak." Communists.
Dunno, Ship. I'm thinking your theory of offsetting hatred leading to a decent society isn't super-comforting.
Haha, fair enough. But, the difference is that the Jews were frequently purported to *be* the communists, and thereby uniting people against the Jews and communists.
In our situation, it's closer to being "us vs them" with very little to no overlap. It's the SJWs (and feminists, BLM, LA Raza, etc) vs. rich (or supposedly "bigoted") white men (and the idiots who take the criticism and frequent disdain of white males to mean they have an excuse to hate all the "others")
And "rich" should be in quotes, because many of the angry Trump supporter class are low income, (sometimes) working white shlubs who think the government is stealing their jobs and giving them to the stupid darkies who don't deserve them.
