Campus Free Speech

University of Illinois Activists Want to Punish Students for 'Non-Inclusive' Behavior, Theme Parties

Hate speech should result in 'consequences, repercussions, whatever you want to call it,' says student government.

The student government at the University of Illinois discussed a bill earlier this week that would call on the administration to mandate "substantial consequences" for any student or group found guilty of "non-inclusive" behavior.

In defense of the bill, Student Senate Vice President Spencer Haydary said that free speech isn't absolute, and that hate speech should result in "consequences, repercussions, whatever you want to call it," according to The Daily Illini.

The bill asks the administration "to create more substantial consequences for communities, such as registered student organizations, registered organizations, related organizations, and Greek organizations, involved in behavior that is not culturally inclusive, engaged in acts of intolerance, or engaged in acts that violate community standards."

Campus Reform reports that the bill came in a response to activist demands for formal sanctions against a fraternity and sorority that hosted a theme party at which some guests wore sombreros.

Illinois's Student Senate has no actual power—thank goodness—and so the bill isn't actually much of a threat to free speech on campus. Still, it's illustrative of the stupidity of the kind of person who gets elected to the Student Senate. Contrary to popular belief, the Supreme Court has never recognized a "hate speech" exception to the First Amendment: public universities are unquestionably required to permit students to engage in kinds of expression that other people might subjectively describe as hateful.

This smug little piece of shit is one of your future overlords.

    1. Welcome to the new normal.

        1. not snarky enough

  2. Having nothing legitimate to rebel against can really make life a bore.

But maybe they should occupy themselves getting a useful degree instead of preparing themselves for a career in politics that isn’t likely to materialize.

    1. “isn’t likely to materialize.”

Why do you say that? There’s plenty of room for professional agitators and local panjandrums, gumming up the works. Right up until the moment when the revolution comes and the Strongman liquidates every single one of the annoying twits.

      1. How many of these kids are expecting to be involved in politics? How many colleges just like this are there? How many open spots do you think there are?

Politicians don’t give up their power easily– look at McCain and Feinstein

        1. As elected officials? Sure, not much chance of that.

As bureaucrats, activists, people running or working at government-funded foundations and what not?

I think there is an excellent chance of that.

          1. As bureaucrats, activists, people running or working at government-funded foundations and what not?

And those are the people have the real power to fuck up yours and everyone else’s lives. Enjoy the nightmare fuel.

  3. I give up. Can’t we just gas the student government, and let it go at that?

    1. Sometimes, I, too, think Hitler’s real flaw was that he just didn’t go far enough.

      1. That’s Maduro’s problem too.

        1. He definitely does not have enough bullets.

      2. Bad choice of targets. If he’d just ovened the media and left the Jews alone, he’d be remembered as a great man today.

        1. Probably not. The Nazis have a reputation for being military geniuses and efficient villains that isn’t really backed up by the facts. He’d have bungled it somehow, but since media types are far worse than Jews, he’d still have an awful rep.

          1. The flip side is that the Jews would be praising their nazi general exploits for 75+ years after. Plus, we might get some pesky nazi general exploit deniers, so they would be on some list to get rid of.

        2. What sort of racist doesn’t know that Jews WERE the media back then? Exactly the same as they are now.

    2. No, no. The smell from that kind of toxin lingers for months, if not years. Slip a little something into their free range organic granola bars.

  4. I’m gonna guess that there are groups on campus that are specifically targeted towards feminists, gays, blacks, Hispanics, transgenders and Muslims. And I’m gonna guess that these groups will be excluded from these non-inclusive hate speech punishments that are being called for.

    1. I’d guess that these imbeciles didn’t think of that. They all understand that such groups are exempt, and as student activist types they aren’t experienced enough to realize that they would have to spell that out.

Think of the fun you could have bringing cases before whatever board is supposed to hear such things, against all the trendy groups that they expected would get left alone.

    2. we’ll give some land to the niggers and the chinks, but we don’t want the IRISH.

      1. Blazing Saddles, right? Aw ok, the Irish can stay too.

        1. Telegram for mongo!

      2. I didn’t get a harrumph from this guy.

        1. You watch your ass!

        2. You watch your ass!

  5. RE: University of Illinois Activists Want to Punish Students for ‘Non-Inclusive’ Behavior, Theme Parties

Freedom of association is a vulgar and improper concept that must be eliminated. Who are we to choose our friends? Who are we to deny some poor beggar living under an underpass the right to our company just because he smells like a four day old corpse? Who are we not to bring in stray mountain lions into our home and give some beer and chips? Who are we to deny a paroled mass murderer into our humble abodes for a few years at a time? We little people simply cannot make the right decisions when it comes to associating with our fellow human beings and the tame and domesticated animals in the wild. For too long now we have raised our noses to the criminal element, the mentally ill and rattlesnakes by not welcoming them into our lives. That must stop. These people and animals have feelings too and rejecting them into our world only hurt their feelings and injures their self worth. So let us take heed and the warm wisdom of the University of Illinois student government, and open our minds and hearts to those who wish to sponge off us or at the very least to kill or injure us and our families. It’s what all good Americans do.

    1. I really want to suggest a title for these “reminders”. I was going to suggest something like, “Two Minutes with Uncle Jay”, but….well, that just has a whole, other connotation.

How about, “Uncle Jay’s Know Your Place”?

    2. I know this was sarcasm, but that is actually what they want. A little old lady wants a boarder who is also handy and puts an ad for “a good Christian gentleman” — note this is for her own house. Gov came down on her. Feds want to harass AirBnb because people renting out their own homes want to be choosy. EEOC wants to ban asking about criminal history (ban the box) for hires that might be nurses, handling money, alone with women at late hours. New transgender rules would also apply to getting a man thinking he is a woman as a dorm-mate when you are female–and you can’t complain about it.
Yes indeed who are you to choose who you associate with!

  6. “You wanna be 19? Go ahead! But stay the FUCK outta my way until you have the juice to get a job where they give you a chair!”

    1. I watched your movie.

Too bad he got caught at the end.

  7. At some point, people just need to start kicking these idiots’ asses. It is pretty clear they are incapable of reasoning. Therefore, there is no point in trying. While they don’t understand reasoning, they will understand violence.

    1. Violence is never the answer, unless acting in explicit self-defense, John.

      1. Violence is frequently the answer in this world.

Sometimes not a very good one, but that’s a separate question.

        1. “If violence isn’t the answer, you’re asking the wrong question!”

          /dissident Quaker bumper sticker

          1. Violence is like duct tape. If it doesn’t fix the problem, you didn’t use enough of it.

            1. This is true. If you just kill everyone, then there won’t be problems anymore.

      2. At what point does the nanny state stealing 50% or your wealth, forcing you by threat of club to buy health insurance and civil forfeiture your ass become self-defense?

        1. Something something… long train of abuses and usurpations…

  8. Forget 1st amendment law, what kind of idiot wants to punish groups for not being “culturally inclusive”?

What the hell does that even mean? Not insensitive, but inclusive??? So, our “greek society” has to include Mexican, Aztec, Olmec, Tuvan, Hopi, Inuit, French, Norwegian, Shi’a, Sunni, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo….. etc…. cultural memes?

Or does that mean that your Greek Frat has to have a membership that looks like a Benetton ad? I’ll assume it is the latter.

Still, this is baked in stupid. Because if they are serious, aside from violating a basic right to free association, they’ll be forcing the “Rape Survivor’s Support Group” to include all cultures. So no just allowing women. Gotta be inclusive. No excluding Afghan men who believe in honor killings and punitive rape.

And we’ll have to shut down that African-American Student Union, because it certainly doesn’t reflect the larger university community.

Or am I right in assuming that they have no such intentions and what they really want is a cudgel to have on hand for eliminating any group that they happen to dislike?

That’s like asking what “diversity” or “social justice” actually means. You certainly aren’t going to make any headway trying to use outdated devices like definitions and logic.

    2. What Bra Ket said above. It doesn’t mean anything and it isn’t supposed to. It is pure emotion and madness at this point.

    3. It makes no sense. They are just saying words they think sound nice. What they mean is that no one should do anything that might offend some oversensitive non-white-male person. And they think that “culturally inclusive” says that.

It also seems really fucking offensive to people from other cultures to suggest that they can’t enjoy or be welcome at events that aren’t sufficiently “culturally inclusive”.

    4. what kind of idiot wants to punish groups for not being “culturally inclusive”

One who is vicious and hateful and has a small, shriveled soul?

    5. If you are white Irish club, then you have to have purple anti-Irish wolverines included… Because.

    6. what kind of idiot wants to punish groups for not being “culturally inclusive”?

      Totalitarians.

    7. What the hell does that even mean? Not insensitive, but inclusive???

If you have ask then you’re not being inclusive and should be punished. /SJW ‘tard

  9. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

    IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

    1. FRUIT SUSHI IS BAD HAIR DAY

  10. Contrary to popular belief, the Supreme Court has never recognized a “hate speech” exception to the First Amendment…

So it should be at least a couple years before the court has lurched sufficiently far to the left for that one.

    1. It won’t take long, given Hillary’s stated anti-citizens united litmus test when she gets to appoint to the court. The 1st will be gutted shortly.

  11. I was on student government when I was at a Junior College 12 years ago. Pretty much the only non-leftist aside from my moderate friend I dragged with me.

There was a motion to increase the student health fee to provide more services to students (the clinic on campus wanted more money). So me & my friend visited the clinic to see what they offer and what they wanted to extra money more, you know… due diligence.

They did actually offer a lot, but…. when we asked how many people were actually using it, we got stonewalled and told they don’t actually keep records of that. My friend and I chose a few random times to watch from the quad, and we never saw anyone go in there.

We voted No. Guess what everyone else voted?

    1. Most students probably aren’t even aware of it. When I heard about the clinic on my campus, I went there whenever my pee was too yellow.

I knew it would be the cheapest health care I’d ever get.

      1. pee was too yellow

        Is that a thing?

        1. If your pee is yellow, you are dehydrated.

          1. What about . . . other . . . colors?

            1. Brown is really bad.

              1. MORE libertarian racism!

            2. I can stop reading comments now. Thank you.

            3. When I was a kid, my cousin got hold of some pills that would make you pee green. God only knows what was in them, but we sure had a lot of fun with those pills.

              1. When I was a kid, my cousin got hold of some pills that would make you pee green. God only knows what was in them, but we sure had a lot of fun with those pills.

You guys come away with a lot of green Zs on your backs?

              2. we sure had a lot of fun with those pills

                Yeah……”with the pills”.

            4. I only get yellow. And kind of orange-ish when I had kidney stones. But that problem made itself very obvious in other ways.

            5. Porphyria for the win.

              1. Porphyria for the win.
                BLUE URINE!

    2. Only people I know who ever used it went to get checked for STD’s.

    3. We voted No. Guess what everyone else voted?

That you and your friend were both a couple of EVUL HEARTLESS BASTARDS WHO HATE SICK PEOPLE?

  12. I would presume that the local college Libertarians chapter could then proclaim the student senator is engaging in hate speech against those that like our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, right?

  13. Contrary to popular belief, the Supreme Court has never recognized a “hate speech” exception to the First Amendment…

    Ready for Hillary!

  14. activist demands for formal sanctions against a fraternity and sorority that hosted a theme party at which some guests wore sombreros

    Mexican hats: NOT. FUCKING. OKAY.

  15. So me & my friend visited the clinic to see what they offer and what they wanted to extra money more, you know… due diligence.

    You’re worse than Hitler.

  16. On a somewhat related note; Georgetown Apologizes for Slavery.

Turns out, if you don’t have money and you don’t make money giving people an education (like if you gave it to them for free) you’ve got to seek revenue where you can find it.

If free tuition suddenly becomes the law of the land, won’t it then be racist *not* to charge tuition at Georgetown for anyone who doesn’t have slave heritage?

  17. They should have a Title IX theme party.

    1. Many machines on IX. New machines.

      Wait…. Oh, different party!

  18. I say we indulge these activists in their quest for attention.

  19. So there will be exceptions for campus organizations like Black Student Union, LGBT groups, Hispanic Students, and the like, right? I mean they have to be exempted from these otherwise broad inclusivity requirements.

  20. to create more substantial consequences for communities …. engaged in acts that violate community standards.”

I guess it would be a waste of time trying to get the person to understand the contradiction in their own argument.

Either you believe “communities” are pluralistic, and have different standards…. or you believe there is only ONE “community” and that everyone has to adhere to standards decided upon by an arbitrary committee of censors like yourself.

I’m guessing he meant the latter.

    1. Sort of the status quo, though, for example with regard to obscenity (which also puts the lie to the notion that America is a land of unbridled free speech, unfortunately).

  21. . Still, it’s illustrative of the stupidity of the kind of person who gets elected to the Student Senate

Elected? those are the only people who *run*

  22. Man, when this education bubble bursts, they better have the infrastructure in place for on-the-job training and online education…but in any case there’s going to be some bad shit going down.

  23. The student government at the University of Illinois discussed a bill earlier this week that would call on the administration to mandate “substantial consequences” for any student or group found guilty of “non-inclusive” behavior.

How close to Stalinist Rhetoric do they have to get before we’re allowed to call them Stalinist?

    Asking for a friend.

    1. The most opinionated vacuous idiotic useless brain dead bird brain would be on student bodies.

Hates those. Including the ethnic ones.

All talking gibberish about love, equality, inclusiveness but yet would engage in the most nastiest of behavior come election time or whenever someone or organization did something they found offensive.

      Fuck them.

      1. In a world where government power were limited, these people would be relegated to president of the Homeowners Association. Instead, they’re levying $30,000 a day fines on unsuspecting couples who’ve abided by every state and local regulation building a cabin in a rural spread somewhere a few miles away from a lake.

  24. your mom goes to college!

  25. You! The wop go make out with that chink. NOW! Or else face being called a racist!

  26. Spencer Haydary said that free speech isn’t absolute, and that hate speech should result in “consequences, repercussions, whatever you want to call it,

There is no such thing as “free speech” in any contrast with “hate speech”. There is only the “freedom OF speech”. And you either support it, or you don’t. And don’t even get me started on the “rights are not absolute” bs. If “rights” are not absolute, then they are NOT rights. In closing, fuck off, you slimy, little, pansy-assed, wannabe slaver.

    1. Maybe someone will recite that as he’s horse-whipped through the streets, some day.

  27. The student government at the University of Illinois discussed a bill earlier this week that would call on the administration to mandate “substantial consequences” for any student or group found guilty of “non-inclusive” behavior.

And how many of these fuckwads have aspirations of being in the Federal government some day?

    Our future “leaders,” folks.

  28. Student governments are training grounds for little liberal busy bodies.
