Maine Gov. Paul LePage Would Like to Duel a Political Rival
"America's craziest governor" really loses it this time in the form of expletive-filled voicemail.

Maine's Republican Governor Paul LePage — once described by Politico as "America's Craziest Governor" — added to his impressive repertoire of saying vulgar and bigoted things in a completely unhinged manner when he left a voicemail for Maine State Rep. Drew Gattine (D) yesterday.
LePage — who earlier this year created a stir when he lamented that he believed heroin dealers with names like "D-Money, Smoothie, Shift" were coming to his state from "Connecticut and New York" and "half the time they impregnate a young, white girl before they leave" — objected to a reporter's insinuation that Gattine had called him a racist. But, according to the Portland Press Herald, the reporter did not say explicitly that Gattine had called LePage a racist. That didn't stop LePage from leaving in a huff, telling reporters "you make me so sick."
Shortly thereafter, LePage left a 34-second message on Gattine's voicemail, which can be heard in its entirety on the Portland Press Herald's site:
Mr. Gattine, this is Governor Paul Richard LePage. I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you c**ksucker. I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I'm a racist. I've spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-bitch, socialist c**ksucker. You … I need you to, just friggin. I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.
LePage reportedly later told reporters about the message and that he hoped Gattine made it public. The Press Herald then filed a Freedom of Access Act request for the audio, which Gattine turned over later that night (if only all public information access requests to the government were fulfilled with such expedience!).
The governor also told reporters, "I wish it were 1825" because he and Gattine "would have a duel, that's how angry I am." LePage added, "I would not put my gun in the air, I guarantee you, I would not be (Alexander) Hamilton. I would point it right between his eyes, because he is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he's been in this Legislature to help move the state forward."
In addition to his race-baiting drug hysteria from earlier this year, LePage has publicly advocated for public executions by guillotine of drug traffickers and quarantining healthy nurses who have returned from performing vital charity medical work in Ebola-stricken parts of Africa.
LePage also joked about "blowing up" the Press Herald's building while playing with a fighter jet simulator, and shortly after taking office in 2011 told the NAACP "to kiss my butt" when the organization made an issue of him skipping Martin Luther King Day events around the state. LePage noted that he has a black adopted son, and defended his decision by saying the NAACP is a "special interest" and "I'm not going to be held hostage by special interests."

Pretty much all politicians suffer from a form of mental defectiveness that causes them to believe that other human beings are not self-owning individuals with agency. It's sort of refreshing when the craziness gets out into the open like this.

Mainers - the DownEast Yokels of the North?
Pretty much.
See guys, this is what happens when you give French Canadians power.
Where I'm from, that's a sly euphemism for Injun. It confused me for years to see people use it to mean anything else.
Oh boy, given French-Mohawk relations nowadays, that would piss so many French Canadians off.
Is it bad that I kind of like this guy in a weird way?
Credit where credit's due, LePage had a rough childhood and seems to have pulled himself out:
LePage was born in Lewiston, Maine. The eldest son of eighteen children of Theresa (n?e Gagnon) and Gerard LePage, both of French Canadian descent, he grew up speaking French in an impoverished home with an abusive father who was a mill worker. His father drank heavily and terrorized the children, and his mother was too intimidated to stop him. At age eleven, after his father beat him and broke his nose, he ran away from home and lived on the streets of Lewiston, where he at times stayed in horse stables and at a "strip joint". After spending roughly two years homeless, he began to earn a living shining shoes, washing dishes at a caf?, and hauling boxes for a truck driver. He later worked at a rubber company and a meat-packing plant and was a short order cook and bartender.
Holy cow.
He also only makes $70,000 a year as governor (although he tried to raise that), took in a teen from Jamaica so he could get an American education, and his wife is a waitress who works to this day as one. He's insane, but in a likable sort of way.
Paul LePage grew up in this comedy sketch.
So, if not for electoral politics, he'd likely be just a crazy guy on the street corner?
At least someone in that family pulled out.
Governor LePage, since you're obviously a regular H&R commenter, I just want to say keep up the good work.
We don't wish it were 1825 Hugh.
Are we really not supposed to think more highly of LePage now?
Yeah, I'm kinda confused. Do Reason writers ever look at the comments here.....?
This guy would fit right in.
The war to come will be between writers and commenters.
Well, except for the statist-fellating, authority-boner stroking parts. Which, to be frank, far outweigh any kudos he deserves for the success he's made of himself and his blunt in-your-face attitude.
shortly after taking office in 2011 told the NAACP "to kiss my butt" when the organization made an issue of him skipping Martin Luther King Day events around the state. LePage noted that he has a black adopted son, and defended his decision by saying the NAACP is a "special interest" and "I'm not going to be held hostage by special interests."
OK, so he got one right.
He adopted the black kid because he enjoys having direct control over someone with dark skin.
Zing!
*** narrows gaze ***
Thank you.
I wonder if D-Money Smoothie Shift LePage will enter politics himself.
I've have started to translate every instance of "accusations of racism" into statements meaning - "I disagree with you, but i'm too lazy and/or stupid to articulate why"*
h/t = Hazel for helping w/ this.
Oooh, burn!
Yet more proof that the epithet "racism" no longer has any real meaning, beyond: "You mentioned race in a way that I don't like."
I've tended to roll my eyes at the commenters who talk about Reason's leftist/SJW orientation on such matters, but it's starting to bother me. It's one thing to "not be racist," but it's quite another to adopt the entire language and slanted worldview of the SJWs in a misguided and doomed attempt to find common ground.
Do you really find it unreasonable that people took issue with him blaming Maine's heroin problem on out of state black drug traffickers with stereotypical ghetto nicknames who impregnate white girls half the time (claims not at all supported by statistics)? That's probably one of the least dubious accusations of racism in the realm of politics in recent years.
I have no idea how often that happens in Maine, but it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. If he is simply imagining that scenario, then maybe it's "racism" (in the modern, expanded form of that term). But if it does happen, even part of the time, then no, it's not racism to point it out and complain about it.
Making race-based generalizations has never been precluded from being racist if they have ever at any point been true for any people in the group. Were klansmen ranting about "niggers raping white women" not racist just because white women were sometimes raped by black men?
LePage wasn't telling a particular story where these guys had these names and sold drugs and got girls pregnant. He was making racial generalizations about drug traffickers in Maine that are not backed up by evidence. That combined with the stereotypical ghetto names and reference to impregnating white women (why was that specificity even necessary? I know Maine is a pretty white state but if anything that's all the more reason there's no need to specify. Is it not a problem when minority women are impregnated by these guys?) is pretty good evidence for a racist motive or worldview by the speaker. And I question how many kids there actually are, regardless of race, being born in Maine to out of state drug dealing fathers.
"I know Maine is a pretty white state but if anything that's all the more reason there's no need to specify."
He actually agrees:
"I was going impromptu and my brain didn't catch up to my mouth," LePage said. "Instead of Maine women I said white women. . . . If you go to Maine, you can see it's 95 percent white."

Ok, so even he agreed he shouldn't have said that. He admits it was out-of-line, but seems to specifically object to using the word "racist" to describe it. If it wasn't racist, then how was it out of line?
I think one reason people freak out about these things is the implication that if they said something racist, they must be racist, and they don't want to be (and/or be seen as) a racist. But that doesn't necessarily follow. I don't know what's in LePage's head all the time, but viewing that comment as racist is hardly a baseless SJW fringe view.

Inarticulate?
I'm betting he objects to the comment being labelled racist because people *do* take slip-ups and try to paint one's entire character with them. Particularly politicians. "Racist" is still a powerful label.
"I don't know what's in LePage's head all the time, but viewing that comment as racist is hardly a baseless SJW fringe view."
I don't disagree there. I don't think many people are defending the comment in a vacuum though.
One could argue that he unnecessarily brought race into the statement, but there's a scale between "out of line" and "racist." To me, racism is making sweeping generalizations about race, using stereotypes as eternal truths, etc.
But stereotypes are often based in reality. Drug dealers are often black, and often have stereotypical ghetto names. For all I know, Maine does have a problem with black drug dealers from Connecticut, and I doubt if they have names like Biff and Chauncey and Herbert. I don't think it's racist to point out reality.
Which is what he did with that little statement. Unless you're arguing that the whole thing was a series of 'misstatements' that if, not under pressure and with due deliberation, you retracted and modified each individual part so that its completely different and all the individually racist parts were really just complete slips of the tongue from a guy who's totally non-racist but deep down really worried about the minorities defiling the white women of his Godly state?
I mean, if you're really worried that a horde of D-Moneys are slipping up across the border to run heroin and defile your womenfolk - you're pretty fucking racist, no matter what color your adopted son's skin is.
Now, there is a difference between casual racism (I just don't like 'those people' and don't want to associate with them) and the hardcore Illinois Nazi shit (segregation, extermination) - but when you're the chief executive of a state government you're in danger of even your unconscious desires being seen as license to screw with part of the population by any state agent who's feeling the itch. You simply shouldn't be making those slips of the tongue and if you are its because you're spending a lot of time around people who actually hold those views.
And they often absolutely *don't* have 'stereotypical ghetto names'. Most of the time your black dealer is called 'Dwayne' or 'Rufus'.
Out here there aren't any black dealers and the few that I know are 'Tony' and 'Adriana' and 'Jorge'.
I have, literally - though that doesn't mean much as this is both anecdotal and a tiny sample size - never meat anyone dealing (of any race) who used stage name. They may not have used there real one but they certainly weren't D-Money or K-fed or anything like that.
It's not unreasonable for people to take issue with those comments, they should vote him out of office or something if they feel inclined. I'm just not one to get lathered up in derp rage and social signaling because a guy made mean comments. I reserve my hate for true villains.
He's the guy who's pushing to throw even more people in jail for 'drug crimes'. Who, in this country, would you consider a 'true villain' worthy of hate?
Well, outside of Clinton, of course.
"(claims not at all supported by statistics)"
Can you provide them? As Maine doesn't actually record them.
Similar things are being said/possibly happening in Vermont though so he may only be exaggerating.
"If you're a guy from New York, you can come here with 500 bags of heroin, sell it and sleep with three different women before you go home the next day," said Chief Baker. Many of the women, he said, receive rent subsidies and food stamps and use heroin themselves."

There was a reason article on this when he made these comments that stated that according to maine's own figures over 80% of drug traffickers in the state are Maine residents. And obviously not all out of state ones are black guys with ghetto nicknames impregnating white women.
I can't read the links at the moment but anecdotal stories by a police chief doesn't say much about how prevalent a problem this is.
"There was a reason article on this when he made these comments that stated that according to maine's own figures over 80% of drug traffickers in the state are Maine residents."
I think this is the article you're referring to:
http://www.pressherald.com/201.....or-heroin/
"McKinney said that last year, 17 percent of all drug traffickers his agents arrested were not Maine residents.
"It used to be that Maine dealers would leave the state to get their supply and bring it back," he said. "Now, these larger (drug) organizations are coming here or having people come here."
Sadly, I couldn't find any references with specific racial breakdown though.
"And obviously not all out of state ones are black guys with ghetto nicknames impregnating white women."
True enough, "Murder" isn't a stereotypical nickname (I don't think, anyways).
Then where is the governor getting *his* data from? If Maine isn't keeping record then there's nothing for the governor to base his statement off of.
He's just pulling shit out of his ass based on exaggeration by the police and his own fevered imagination.
Yet more proof that the epithet "racism" no longer has any real meaning, beyond: "You mentioned race in a way that I don't like."
Yeah, that is kind of an annoying trend. People seem to believe that saying things that sound racist or bigoted makes the speaker a racist.
If you are a public figure saying impolitic things about race a lot, I might think you are a jerk, but it doesn't mean you are a racist in any substantive way.
And I have to say that there is something sort of endearing about someone like LaPage who just says shit.
So, he said some controversial things?
But he didn't actually duel anybody or blow up the newspaper's headquarters.
I'm unimpressed.
It's really hard for me to get worked up about what people say anymore--especially since I'm so big on the First Amendment anyway.
Hillary Clinton has never said anything as stupid as that--but why would it matter if she did? I despise her for what she's done, not what she says.
Trump says stupid things all the time--but only silly people go apoplectic over what Trump says. How can you say people are buffoons and then take what they say so seriously?
I don't think Obama or Bush ever said such outrageous things, but even if they did--who but silly people would care?
Obama has actually bombed lots of buildings in real life. Obama actually targeted and killed a U.S. citizen with a missile strike for what he said (preaching/recruiting for Al Qaeda) in real life. If Obama merely threatened to do that, why would it matter?
I suppose I care a lot about what Bush said in his run up to the Iraq War, but the reason I object to his bullshit casus belli was because of the subsequent real life bombing and invasion--which turned out to be unjustified. If only people had paid closer attention to what was happening and less attention to what silly things Bush said, we might have avoided embarrassing mistakes like this:
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com.....iraq_x.htm
C'mon, Ken, can we at least agree this guy sounds like a colossal dickhead?
Woodchipper Nation eats the shit this guy said for breakfast.
Such id the world we live in.
LePage ...objected to a reporter's insinuation that Gattine had called him a racist. But, according to the Portland Press Herald, the reporter did not say explicitly that Gattine had called LePage a racist.
So this one girl supposedly called this other girl a slut behind her back, but another girl who knows her mom said that's not really what she meant so now I'm totally confused.
I like this guy. Let's make him the Libertarian presidential nominee in 2020.
McAffe/Lepage 2020 - Libertarians gone full blown crazy!!
Johnson/LePage 2020 - 'since we're not putting up libertarian candidates anyway'
Unless there's reams of state politics that I'm not aware of*, I see nothing noteworthy or upsetting.
*Entirely possible.
I approve of politicians dueling. Give them cardboard armor and foam swords and let them go at it.
Better yet, cardboard armor and REAL swords.
Why the armor?
It helps soak up the blood. Don't try and make life harder for the dudes who have to clean up the arena after.
Why are you trying to make dueling less useful and fulfilling?
If that is the worst they have to say about him, he's ok in my book.
+1 Rahm Emanuel.
OMG, somebody said something obnoxious!
No trigger warning, no safe space, they just up and said something obnoxious out of nowhere!
Let's all run around in circles screaming with our panties in a wad.
. . . or better yet, let's form an emergency drum circle!

shortly after taking office in 2011 told the NAACP "to kiss my butt" when the organization made an issue of him skipping Martin Luther King Day events around the state.
This may be the least offensive thing he's done. Does LePage run around the state doing Washington's Birthday events?
This is an interesting idea. It makes sense, given the history of the commemorations, that politicians would do one and not the other. King Day is essentially a celebration of the implementation of the noble political ideas conceived in our Revolution and Constitution to the equal benefit of the entire populace. Washington's Birthday has not been assigned a similar abstract significance in practice, and maybe it's time to. It would be awesome to see politicians having to run around giving speeches to Constitutionalist activist organizations and talk about their commitment to limited government and so forth for a day, and catch holy hell for it if they slack on it.
Columbus Day, of course, can remain a glorified Puerto Rican Day for the Italian Americans.
$89 an hour! Seriously I don't know why more people haven't tried this, I work two shifts, 2 hours in the day and 2 in the evening? And i get surly a chek of $1260......0 whats awesome is Im working from home so I get more time with my kids.

What the fuck is the matter with everyone here? Isn't it possible to acknowledge, on the one hand, that it's kind of cool to see a guy making progressives (indeed by far the most successful and threatening movement in its assault on liberty) squirm with such a refreshing lack of filter or apology; and, on the other hand, acknowledge that he is a vile racist POS with serious authoritarian tendencies of his own? Are we not capable of that subtlety?
This is HnR.
Who's the new guy? Pick a side, the side you choose before you read the article.
And then, whatever you do, DON'T read the article.
What article?
RE: Maine Gov. Paul LePage Would Like to Duel a Political Rival
Governor LePage isn't any more crazy than the rest of the ruling elitist filth who dominate our lives.
He's just more open about it.
That's what i said in the very first comment.
When he actually pushes for a repeal of Maine's antidueling laws, then I'll be impressed. Until then he's just another careerist maintaining special privileges for the political class.
All that I know after reading this, is that I kinda like this guy. The "you little son-of-a-bitch, socialist c**ksucker." bit really warmed my cockles.
Frankly I think we would be better off with more politicians who actually just said what they thought, and weren't afraid of calling people out, and/or insulting people.
The false imaginary respect these politicians always give to each other is BS. I think prog-tard politicians should be called out far more harshly for their stupidity a lot of the time. How about just say out loud in a press release "So you think doing XXX will just magically accomplish YYY??? You do know that ZZZ is obviously going to happen, which is a bad thing. Only a moron couldn't see that coming. What are you 6 years old? You never learned to do basic math? Get out of here with that nonsense you idiot."
Because that is literally how those people should be slapped down when they say some of the insane shit they say. Even being polite and listening to their dumb ideas without calling them out harshly just reinforces the idea that they MAY be valid ideas.
The "false imaginary respect" is fine, it keeps things moving. However, after a while, when you get no reciprocation, it's time to take off the glove. What did he say? "cocksucker"... whatever, Mainers can be a bit coarse at times in their speech by Boston Brahmin standards, and unless Mr. Gatine is out as bi (he is married), "cocksucker" is just another generic throwaway . As for "Socialist", Gatine is a Dem, so calling him that is just calling a spade a spade.

That's it? That's the friggin' transcript of what he actually said? I wish I still lived in Maine, I'd vote for him twice!
