The Trump Riots That are Mostly My Fault
...In the future, the media will kill famous people to generate news that people will care about. ? The Dilbert Future (May 1997)

Three months later, the media chased Princess Di into a tunnel and created a dangerous situation that killed her but was terrific for television news ratings. The media didn't plot to kill anyone, but they created a situation that made it likely someone important would die because of the way their business model works. That was the basis for my prediction.

Fast-forward to today and we see the media priming the public to try to kill Trump, or at least create some photogenic mayhem at a public event. Again, no one is sitting in a room plotting Trump's death, but ? let's be honest ? at least half of the media believes Trump is the next Hitler, and a Hitler assassination would be morally justified. Also great for ratings. The media would not be charged with any crime for triggering some nut to act. There would be no smoking gun. No guilt. No repercussions. Just better ratings and bonuses all around...

  Media isn't a thing, it's an act of consumption. I suppose you can blame media consumers for creating the demand that created suppliers who created a dangerous situation, but that seems a couple steps removed from attributing realistic guilt so why not just blame the drivers involved? I'm all for thumping the chattering class for its many, many failings, but nebulizing a problem does nothing to solve it.

Trump Is Testing the Norms of Objectivity in Journalism
...It would also be an abdication of political journalism's most solemn duty: to ferret out what the candidates will be like in the most powerful office in the world.

It may not always seem fair to Mr. Trump or his supporters. But journalism shouldn't measure itself against any one campaign's definition of fairness. It is journalism's job to be true to the readers and viewers, and true to the facts, in a way that will stand up to history's judgment. To do anything less would be untenable.

  In order to bring a sexual harassment suit, the first element that a plaintiff must prove is that the offending comments, conduct, etc., would not have occurred but for the plaintiff's sex. It is not enough for a plaintiff to say that she heard a negative comment about women. The plaintiff must prove that the comment was made because the plaintiff was female -- that is, that it was in some way targeted toward her.
  
  Further, sexual harassment requires hostile or pervasive conduct that rises to an extreme level. Saying that a woman should not work full time is not extreme conduct. Indeed, in a case you may have heard of called Jones v. Clinton, the Governor of Arkansas dangling his penis in the face of a female state employee was held not to constitute extreme conduct sufficient to give rise to a sexual harassment case. How can statements about women working full time possibly be extreme conduct if sticking one's penis in a woman's face is not?
  
  Simply put, this professor is full of shit. He is just like the professors who twenty years ago claimed that it would be "sexual harassment" for employers to allow employees to discuss Monica Lewinski at work.

      Careful there. The rules that your employer wants you to follow as an employee are not the same as the standards for a successful lawsuit.
      
      An employer wants to avoid even the possibility of a lawsuit and also needs to show that it is very, very serious about preventing harassment. As a result, employer have an incentive to adopt workplace policies and rules that go beyond the legal definition of harassment and bar comments that even suggest the possibility of offense. That's why your company's HR department behaves like the Hayes Office of the 1930's and 1940's. Remember: your boss does not want to have to pay for the defense of a lawsuit even if it is a lawsuit your boss will likely win.
      
      However, when it comes to actually incurring a "massive civil liability," a plaintiff needs to meet the higher legal standard.

        That's exactly what happened.
        
        The guy who was the author of the original innocent act (an unwanted hug to congradulate her for exceeding some performance metric) was pretty pissed off to be hauled into the counseling session for essentially giving her the same "atta boy" he gave everyone else who did a good job..
        
        Being their most productive manager he thought it was all unfair and his position was unassailable. And he started singing "you're a mean one mr grinch" whenever he was near the complainant. Also her other coworkers started giving her the cold shoulder for being an asshole.
        
        She complained some more. They retaliated some more.
        
        After six months she quit, went to a competitor, and sued.

        The guy who was the author of the original innocent act (an unwanted hug to congradulate her for exceeding some performance metric) was pretty pissed off to be hauled into the counseling session for essentially giving her the same "atta boy" he gave everyone else who did a good job..
        
        Being their most productive manager he thought it was all unfair and his position was unassailable. And he started singing "you're a mean one mr grinch" whenever he was near the complainant. Also her other coworkers started giving her the cold shoulder for being an asshole.
        
        She complained some more. They retaliated some more.
        
        After six months she quit, went to a competitor, and sued.

        I cannot tell you the number of cases I have seen in my own practice where the alleged retaliation claim far exceeds the initial, preposterous claim of "harassment."

Productivity declines for third straight quarter

Productivity in the second quarter unexpectedly fell 0.5%, well below expectations.

Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had forecast a 0.3% gain in productivity in the second quarter.

Productivity is down 0.4% from a year earlier, the first year-over-year decline since the second quarter of 2013.

Output of goods and services increased at a 1.2% clip in the second quarter. Hours worked rose 1.8%.

It seems like everyday we have more supposed Democrats getting all miffed that we are not treating Jill Stein like the delicate fine china she is. Like, I totally thought that an election was a competition and we were supposed to take on all comers. I see her stupid ass ad every day where she attacks Hillary and never mentions Trump once. Hell, I thought that was her throwing down the guantlet, so to speak.

In my opinion, it is our DUTY as Democrats to give her exactly what she is asking for, a fight. And we know how to fight. She better learn how to fight if she wants to be in the ring boxing it out with the Democratic party. So, Fuck Jill Stein with her strange commercials and Trump helping ways. I was gonna ignore her but too many folks seem to think we need to treat her with kid gloves and blame ourselves for not being 'open' to third party spoilers. Um hai! Third party spoilers gave us dumb ass Dubya. No more of that whiney ass Sarandon crap. We need to win and crush all opposition. Including Dr. Jill Stein.

So, if anybody can clear up why we are supposed to help the competition or ignore them, cool. Let's have it then. Because I just cannot make sense of it.

Paul Ryan Can't Win
Even if he wins his contested primary, on Tuesday, he runs the risking of losing the G.O.P.

Hillary Clinton, at least by inclination, supports generous immigration, robust expansion of trade, and a continued role of leadership on the world stage. Ryan will advance those policy preferences, and his reelection would signal endorsement of them, even if Trump were to win. His defeat would signal the opposite, even if Trump were to lose. That's what makes the election particularly notable.

The odds are wildly against it, but if Paul Ryan, a leading political light, goes down to defeat, then it'll be a new G.O.P. Even if Nehlen merely puts a serious dent into Ryan, it will still be a warning, and everyone will have some adjusting to do. So we'll see. Certainly, populism is a very tough fit for a party that was traditionally the refuge of moneybags, but the workings of supply and demand have made such a makeover plausible. If the Democrats won't offer voters populism, then some other party will.

NBC poll: Clinton finally cracks 50% in two way race, up 10 on Trump

Hillary Clinton now holds a 10-point lead over Donald Trump, 51 percent to 41 percent, according to results from the latest NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking poll

  2) Since Stein is drawing 4% in this poll, it is possible that she is drawing almost exclusively from people who selected Clinton in a two way matchup. You'd need to see the numbers from a three way matchup -- Clinton - Trump - Johnson -- to conclude whether Johnson was drawing unevenly.

    It is also totally unsustainable for a society. Math is a harsh mistress. It leaves men out of luck, which is not a good thing. It also greatly restricts the gene pool. Polygamy is one of the reasons why Arabs are so often the product of generations of cousin marriages. Cousin marriages are okay once, but do it repeatedly over generations and bad things happen.

Melania Trump's Immigration Status: Without Facts, Speculation Is Irresponsible

There is not a whole lot to say on Mrs. Trump's immigration history. The Politico article is a shoddy piece of journalism, where the authors have raised theories but have done no research to confirm their theories. Mrs. Trump claims to have received an H-1B visa in 1996. However, she did a photo shoot in the United States in 1995. Therefore, according to Politico, Mrs. Trump could have been working in the United State illegally.

The bottom line here is Mrs. Trump could have done a photoshoot in the United States legally or she could have done it illegally. Before the release of his birth certificate, one could just as well have said that Barack Obama could have been born in Kenya or he could have been born in Hawaii. For there to be a story, there needs to be lot more information, and Politico has simply been too lazy to do the leg work to transform a theory into news.

Some news outlets, such as the San Jose Mercury-News, have boldly proclaimed, "If she was in the United States on a visitor's visa, she wouldn't be allowed to work." Unfortunately, that is a very narrow view of the law.

What you can do under a B visitor visa is a gray area of the law. The State Department has published guidelines about it.

    The banks fucked up and lost all the proper paperwork. So, the judges let it slide because doing otherwise would have made nearly all foreclosures impossible. That is great except that it opened the door for the banks to foreclose on anyone regardless of the validity of their claim. It is one of the least reported and most appalling stories of the last ten years.

Too late to post in Robby's college SJW thread from last night but I wanted to share the History on Fire podcast on the life of Crazy Horse. Beside the biography of Crazy Horse, it provides an excellent overview of inter tribal and US/native relationships in the late 1800's. I highly recommend it and his other podcasts.

Chinese tourist accidentally ends up in German refugee center

A Chinese tourist found himself living in a home for refugees in Germany for almost two weeks after he tried to report his stolen wallet and inadvertently filled in asylum application forms, a Red Cross official said. He was taken to a Red Cross refugee center in the northwestern town of Duelmen, 220 miles away, where he was given food and money, the news agency said.

"He didn't speak any German or English ? only Mandarin," Christoph Schluetermann, the head of the refugee center, told Reuters. "He spent 12 days trapped in our bureaucratic jungle because we couldn't communicate. Germany is unfortunately an extremely bureaucratic country. Especially during the refugee crisis I've seen how much red tape we have," he said.

The man attracted the attention of staff at the center because he was well-dressed and kept trying to tell his story, but people could not understand him, Schluetermann added.

The employees tried using translation apps and eventually went to a local Chinese restaurant for help with interpretation, and discovered the truth.

"It was an extraordinary moment for us all. He said Europe was not what he had expected," Schluetermann told Reuters.

Seriously, if something is so easy you can do it unwillingly by accident and it takes two weeks to convince them to let you go home, then there is no way they are doing any kind of checks on these people.

        It is well known that the Chicago Democratic Party has a close working relationship with the gangs in Chicago. It is unlikely that is the only big city where the Democrats work with the local gangs. So, it is entirely possible that people connected to the Clintons know the type of people who could do this sort of thing.

  Eh. Two people robbed in the area, a man gets in a scuffle with presumably another would-be robber, winds up shot. It's not unbelievable that his murderer scarpers off without rifling through the guy's pockets. The Clintons have made a lot of enemies, and the thing about a lot of people is that some of them die.

  Both seemingly randomly murdered.
  
  Both crimes totally unsolved.
  
  Both murders happening between the time that Mike Isikoff stated that a White House staffer with the initial "M" was going to come forward with a story and Monica Lewinsky coming forward with her story.
  
  Just... what are the chances that after a lawyer declares that a White House staffer with the initial "M" is going to come forward TWO White House staffers with that initial are randomly, brutally murdered afterwards, and these murders are completely unrelated.
  
  Either something's up or this is seriously the weirdest coincidence of all time.

      I knew about Mahoney -- IIRC, she was in contact with several other women in the white house who were complaining about sexual harassment, and wanted to take some action. Hadn't heard about the other one.

Mam, a Mayan language spoken by more than 500,000 people in Guatemala, ranked ninth in the top 10 languages spoken in U.S. immigration court last fiscal year. Quich? ranked 11th. Both surpassed French, according to the Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review.

Renegade, a strange out of nowhere question:

Many moons ago I rebuilt a pair of rather beat-up Eico HF-60 monoblocks. They had been modified sometime in the past to use battery bias on the input tube, an EF86. I never sketched out the change done here, but now I'm curious since I was discussing this very same pair of amplifiers (now sold) with a friend of mine, who used to own them.

I'm thinking the negative bias via the battery was applied to g1, with a coupling capacitor after the input jack. The original cathode resistor / bypass cap was removed, leaving only the 100 ohm resistor. Feedback applied as normal.

According to my friend, the battery was attached to the cathode. replacing both the 1800 ohm and 100 ohm resistor. Negative feedback was applied through a capacitor to block the 1.5VDC from getting to the output. But I'm thinking the size of the cap here would have been huge - not the .22uf cap I remember being in this section.

Anyway - of no particular interest other than I keep wondering - how does one apply negative feedback to a battery-biased tube?
