Donald Trump's Week of Lies, Outrages, Broken Promises, and Shady Associations
The GOP candidate's bizarre but revealing counter-programing to the DNC.

As Democrats staged a convention to nominate Hillary Clinton as their presidential candidate, Republican rival Donald Trump offered some bizarre but revealing counterprogramming in the form of a week marked by lies, threats, outrages, reversals, hypocrisy, dubious associations, and broken promises.
On Wednesday morning, Trump's campaign manager, Paul Manafort, confirmed what many have long suspected: that despite Trump's promises over the last year or more to release his tax returns, he will become the first major party presidential candidate in four decades not to do so. Trump's flimsy excuse—that he is currently under audit—is one that didn't even stop Richard Nixon.
Later that morning, Trump held a press conference, where he appeared to invite a foreign power to intervene in the presidential election. "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing," Trump said, referring to the emails from Clinton's private email server that were not made public. "I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press." In a follow-up tweet, Trump repeated the invitation, but this time said the emails should be turned over to the F.B.I. The Clinton campaign accused Trump of encouraging "espionage."
A day later, Trump said he was merely being "sarcastic," but if so, his campaign aides didn't know it when he first made the remarks. As The New York Times notes, immediately following his initial statement, aides made "statements [insisting] that Mr. Trump was urging Russia to return any purloined property to the F.B.I."
At the same Wednesday press conference, Trump, who has repeatedly expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, responded to questions about his personal ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin. "I have nothing to do with Putin," he said. "I've never spoken to him. I don't know anything about him other than he will respect me."
But Trump has repeatedly claimed to have met Putin before, and has even said he got to know him. In a November debate, Trump said "I got to know him very well because we were both on 60 Minutes. We were stablemates, and we did very well that night." And in 2014, as Mother Jones reported, Trump spoke at the National Press Club, where he said that he had recently been in Moscow, where he "spoke, indirectly and directly, with President Putin, who could not have been nicer, and we had a tremendous success." Either Trump has met Putin, or he hasn't; either way, he was lying on one of those occasions.
Wednesday evening, Trump participated in an Ask Me Anything on a Reddit forum devoted to his candidacy. Trump's handful of responses shed no real light on how he might govern. (One questioner asked whether Trump was tired of winning. Trump responded that he wasn't.)
But the venue revealed plenty. The particular subreddit that Trump chose to engage with has been described by Vice as having evolved from a conventional political discussion community to "an authoritarian one full of memes and in-jokes, far right talking points, coded racism, misogyny, homophobia, and Islamophobia, and a hypocritical 'free speech' rallying point." As an article at Slate noted, the particular questioners to which Trump responded have records of overtly racist, homophobic, and generally unpleasant online rhetoric. This was the online community that Trump—a major party presidential candidate—chose to engage with.
In one of the answers Trump gave on Reddit, he touted his "detailed plan for H-1B reform to protect American workers." Shortly afterwards, Buzzfeed reported that two of Trump's clubs in Florida, including the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, where he has held multiple campaign events, were seeking to hire 78 immigrants to fill jobs for housekeepers, cooks, and servers. ("Getting help in Palm Beach during the season is almost impossible," Trump said last year.)
At the DNC, meanwhile, a wide array of speakers criticized Trump in fairly harsh terms. And at a Thursday rally, Trump responded to them too, without naming anyone in particular, saying that he would like to "hit a number of those speakers so hard, their heads would spin," so that "they'd never recover."
"I was going to hit one guy in particular, a very little guy," Trump said as the crowd laughed. "I was going to hit this guy so hard his head would spin, he wouldn't know what the hell happened." Trump sometimes uses the word "hit" to refer to a rhetorical attack, but he has also seemed to encourage violence at his campaign rallies before.
This is how the Republican nominee for president spent the days after his nominating convention.
For any other major political candidate in memory, a week like this would amount to a bizarre, catastrophic, campaign-destroying spectacle. For Donald Trump, it's just another week.

Uh-oh. Suderman really stepped into the hornet's nest with this one.
I agree. This lack of alt-text is disgusting.
Too busy trawling Salon and Alternet for talking points.
He must have a gap in his social schedule this weekend.
This seems to be a desperate plea for a last minute invitation.
I called an earlier article "dumbest shit ever".....I was wrong, this article takes the title.

Donald Trump's Week of Lies, Outrages, Broken Promises, and Shady Associations
I guess the Democrats haven't said or done anything of note to be outraged about this past week.
You know, for awhile I was actually of the opinion that the commenters complaining about all of the Trump bashing were in fact being a little paranoid and overly sensitive. But with this past week of DNC dumpster fire still being dominated by how awful Trump is, I am beginning to think they may have a point.
I think an article analyzing Trump's response to the DNC would be fine if wasn't for all the other articles all week.
I would also add that an article critiquing Trump's response to the DNC convention would be fine, if it bookended an article last week critiquing the Dem responses to the RNC convention.

Nope.

Just to pick one headline:
Friday A/V Club: The Contested Convention You Were Promised
I don't see any way to say that the DNC convention was less contested than the RNC convention, what with the constant protests, inside and outside the building, but the Bernies. Reason could easily put together a post-mortem article on the deep divisions in the Dem Party, blah blah. Let's see if they do.
Or how Bernie has made Hillary lean over so far to the left she's tipped over, giving Trump (or Johnson) room to scoop up moderate Dem voters.
Reason editorial decisions:
RNC week: bash Trump
DNC week: bash Trump some more
Trump is the punchline of a racist joke told by Homo Economicus about Homo Politicus. The problem is that the stereotype is so accurate that they don't even know why the joke bothers them.
It's like telling a blonde joke to a blonde from a blonde joke. Deep down she knows that it should make her feel bad, and it does, but she's too stupid be capable of understanding why.
Yes, Trump's politician character is a fucking lying, narcissistic, stupid piece of shit. Because every single member of Homo Politicus is a lying, narcissistic, stupid piece of shit. That's the joke.
For what it's worth, ever since he lured the Hillary camp into acknowledging that a) Russia is capable of stealing Hillary's email, and b) Hillary's deleted emails contained matters of national security, I'm pretty sure the "stupid" part is just for show. The man is a diabolical genius.
"The man is a diabolical genius."
Scott Adams (Dilbert writer) makes a very similar argument....that Trump is a master-persuader and most of what he says and does serves the overall purpose of persuading more and more voters to his side. What some see as insane or outrageous is actually finely tuned to illicit a certain response from the audience and the opposing side. And its working...his polling steadily climbs.
I firmly believe that no-one reaches that level of society/success without being well into the upper 1% on all the intelligence scales. Obama, Bush, Clinton, etc, although mocked for being dumb are actually quite brilliant....you have to be to reach that pinnacle of success. I have no doubt that Trump is quite brilliant as well. And if we concede that that is possible, then perhaps what some see as stupidity is actually diabolical genius. He's trolling the media and winning.
Hillary is melting and all the flying monkeys are rushing to help her.
Okay, I like this one.

Spent a decade tending bar at a hole in the wall Jazz Club in my youth. Tons of fights. I'd spot two guys getting into it verbally and would run around the bar to break it up. Would pull the less crazy of the two aside and let him have it for bringing his shit into my bar. I think maybe that is what Reason is doing.
what you describe could be characterized as =
"efforts aimed at attempting to reduce the amount of pointless bullshit that distracts from the core-product and irritates the 'regular customers'"
i'm not sure that's what's going on here.
You made me RTFA. Where is that quote from?
it wasn't a quote from the piece. it was an attempt at summarizing what the nexus might be between your case-study example, and "I think maybe [x] is what Reason is doing."

"And hey, how's that obamacare coming? If only reason had someone who covered things like that..."
Come on now. They don't have time to write extraneous articles the week of the DNC nomination convention. They're completely busy covering it, of course. /sarcasm
Did we leave it?
Even when you have a good point to make, never back it up by quoting something from Slate.
or mother jones. Of course this is another hit piece claiming to point out lies with out any proof of lies. And if Russia has the missing emails I'd like to see them as well since our own FBI can't find them or won't admit to knowing where they are. They claimed thousands were erased but how do you know how many were erased unless you can retrieve them?
Jesus he did cite MotherJones.
Exactly! How is there anything evil in Trump's request? It probably was sarcastic, but I'd like it to be real.
Trump is despicable. Of course, that's the appeal. The guy is far more dangerous than ISIS. And no I am not being sarcastic.
And no I am not being sarcastic.
True. Sarcasm would require a modicum of wit.
Say what you want about The Donald, he's never sawed anyone's head off on YouTube, at least not that i can find.

"One Shot Skeeter" is what they call me. At least my wife does.
"Bomb the hell out of ISIS", "Shoot someone walking down 5th Ave" - He has explicitly told us he is far more dangerous. "You knew I was a snake when you took me in." Of course like I said, that's his appeal.
"I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters,"
Nothing like using a partial quote to show your bias.

Darn varmints! *Blam* Gotter.
It's a troll, don't waste your time.
DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO.
I LEARNED IT FROM YOU!!
ISIS doesn't pose an existential threat to the US. The President, on the other hand, can do a great deal of damage in 4 years. Or 8, as the current occupant has aptly demonstrated.
Trump 'is far more dangerous than ISIS'.
Classic.
Dajjal uses the well-known Cytotoxic Scale? to measure danger.
Tell us again dajjal how the dem convention won't be a dumpster fire.

As The New York Times notes, immediately following his initial statement, aides made "statements [insisting] that Mr. Trump was urging Russia to return any purloined property to the F.B.I."
Not only was he being sarcastic--it was genuinely funny.
If Trump's aides immediately realized that Democrat strategists would exploit his sarcasm, that doesn't mean Trump wasn't being sarcastic.
This reminds me of that time people took Reagan seriously when he joked about bombing Russia in '84.
http://www.history.com/this-da.....ing-russia
Oh, all the left's worst fears about Reagan were confirmed!!!
Seriously, just because you don't like Trump doesn't mean anything bad you say about him is true. Ultimately going after Trump for colluding with the KGB and other ridiculous accusations undermines legitimate criticism.
Ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?
Ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?
The Democrats fail to understand the lesson of this story, as every single Republican nominee is LITERALLY HITLER!!11!!!
"Ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?"
Sure, but Suderman's a little shaky on the concept that it's meant to teach.
it was sarcasm, but it'd be good if it were true! How would it be evil for the Russians to inform Americans about info that'd previously been gotten from Hillary? Like we're going to use her credit cards?
Does the podium in that picture look like a penis to anyone else? Pete, you wanna chime in on this one?
What you did there, it is seen.
washpost op-ed repetitive, and follows lewinsky press drama-queen narrative by treating trump snark as serious
I also count over 790 words. mcardle has a mediocre editor
Oh is Saudi Arabia funding Trump's campaign too?
Wasn't there an enormous Russian "donation" to the Clinton foundation?
Hey, uranium deals don't pay for themselves!
So when these e-mails are inevitably leaked in October, I assume it will be Trump's fault even though whoever has said e-mails was likely in possession of them (and had a plan to release them) well before Trump was the nominee.
There is no value in a foreign power leaking the emails. There is however much value in using them as leverage against a President Hillary Clinton.
No, there'd be value in influencing the election. To put it bluntly, Putin happens to be on the American people's side in this?not like he really wants to do us a favor, but Putin would be better off w The Donald than The Hil as POTUS, and the world generally would be better off. After the election, what could Putin squeeze out of a prez Hillary? What's she gonna do, have Alaska sold back? Get Russians some no-bid contracts on jobs somewhere? Better landing slots at airports? There's nothing the Russians are asking from the USA, except the comity they could easily get from prez Trump.
I'm not so sure about this since Russia already got 20% of our Uranium so what else can he get from Hillary for a paltry sum and as the left claims Trump owes Putin money. would you collect from the person who can perform, Hillary or the person who can't pay Trump.
A major problem with the DNCLeaks story is that people are likely making the wrong assumption ? it's why the confusion over hurting vs. blackmailing is there. The American political press, with its head up its ass, assumes that the only reason that Russia has to do this is to help Trump. However, it's seemingly forgotten ? here, if not in Russia ? the serious charges that Putin et al made against the Clinton State Department in 2011 for their slipshod attempts at intervening in the Russian Parliamentary elections against Putin's party (the DoS, likewise, more famously worked with Netanyahu's opponents in the most recent Israeli elections).
It makes total sense for Putin and company to now be striking back at the US ? and at Clinton in particular ? by intervening in this election, if only to play the game of showing their similar capabilities (and so ward off future attempts to get involved in Moscow politics). But that's a less sexy story than blaming Trump...
Peter is getting closer and closer to the purest essence of anti-Trump writing possible. Keep shooting for the stars, Pete!
California minimum wage hike will consign millions more low-skill workers to unemployment, study shows. California Democrats are stunned, I'm sure.
If by "stunned" you mean "rubbing their hands with glee".
A whole new addition to the cohort of people dependent on government? Of course the Dems are excited!
That study must be wrong since they didn't intend for that to happen.
Ppft, it's just kulaks refusing to hire people because they can't compete. Soon those businesses will close and be replaced with much better run businesses who can pay minimum wage. And then prosperity will follow, because everyone will have more money and be able to buy more stuff at those businesses!
It's like you people don't soceconomize at all!
"And then prosperity will follow, because everyone will have more money and be able to buy more stuff at those businesses!"
At twice the current price!
Don't worry, we'll just import more Latin American peasants!
Oh, wait....
'At the DNC, meanwhile, a wide array of speakers criticized Trump in fairly harsh terms.'
Thanks for telling me, I never would have guessed that Democrats would criticize the Republican nominee and in fairly harsh terms no less. Quick, to the fainting couch.
There's no sugarcoating it ....
Let me be clear.....
Careful Suderman, I always try and defend the contributors here, but you're edging dangerously close to Dalmia Town.
Close? I'd say he is negotiating for a prime up town site.
I'd say he is negotiating for a full time gig at Vox, but that's just me.
"that despite Trump's promises over the last year or more to release his tax returns" - that is not a true statement ..... he has until he dies to fulfill that promise (at least as Reason srated it)
"he appeared to invite a foreign power to intervene in the presidential election" - interfere AT BEST!
Intervene ! strong language to use against someone who may simply be asking people to find and release emails that were alredy hacked
The rest on whether he met or knew or read about Putin or Russia is just garbage that means nothing without a law or principle of morality .
Reason's articles recently have been almost TOTAL PR to promote themselves or the libertarian party.
Not very REASON-able
Does this guy write for the DNC, maybe ?
@HAPLibertarian
Not very REASON-able
DRINK, motherfuckers!
It's early, but it's Friday, so, fuck it.
"The particular subreddit that Trump chose to engage with has been described by Vice as having evolved from a conventional political discussion community to "an authoritarian one full of memes and in-jokes, far right talking points, coded racism, misogyny, homophobia, and Islamophobia, and a hypocritical 'free speech' rallying point."
You're going after Trump because of the people in a subreddit?
Hey Suderman, maybe you should refer this subreddit to Preet Bahara.
What about arson?!
Aren't you gonna go after Trump for supporting arson?
Mr. Suderman, with all due respect--and I have a lot of respect for your work over the years--you may have succumbed to Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Go talk to someone you respect but typically disagree with for a checkup.
Indeed. And it is always wonderful to see the hypocrisy involved in such associations. The right is tarred with every distant nutcase who can be connected in any way, but (e.g.) actual Communists can organize "peace protests" without any taint whatsoever. Remarkable.
Let's see, what was the name of that terrorist murderer who Obama was best friends with?
Ayers, was it?
The subreddit in question is mostly filled with a combination of wild enthusiasm and high-quality trollery.
It's also been the victim of open vote manipulation by reddit admins, who removed Trump's AMA from the reddit front page shortly after it became the highest-rated thread of the year. Twitter has been playing similar games by boosting #imwithher while shadowbanning various versions of #DNCLeaks as they would trend up.
Conquest's Second Law remains in full effect.
I appreciate that.
I hope you appreciate that Trump isn't to blame for answering people's questions--regardless of whether they're actually nasty people.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_fallacy
"...a hypocritical 'free speech' rallying point."
Hypocritical, how?
Are they calling for the gov't suppression of speech of those with alternative viewpoints, or are they merely restricting views on their site?
I thought libertarians were supposed to understand the difference.
I think the important thing about the "Russia"-hacking angle is that everyone ensure to pretend that is 100% what the story is about, and definitely NOT the actual contents of the DNC communications which were leaked.
I think the public really needs to dwell on baseless speculation surrounding "who did the leaking"- rather than the actual substance of the leak, which exposes -
- widespread collusion between one of the major political parties and news-media,
- campaign finance chicanery which belies the same party's constant demands for 'reform'
- active attempts to sabotage any competition to the establishment
- and much, much more
Because those things? have NO public interest. There is zero possible journalistic value to be had pursuing those topics.
Instead, i believe the public should froth about non-existent russian boogeymen, and perhaps whether or not a golf course in Florida hires mexicans. Becuase Journalism is serious business.
Because Journolism is serious business. FYI.
It was a Snowden-esque revelation, wasn't it? Between BHO's open corruption in allowing Hillary to skate and the ultimate confirmation that the media is fundamentally a tool of the DNC and the Clinton machine, this has been a month of curtains being pulled back for the benefit of the public.
And so ends Reason's DNC coverage. Great even-handed job guys. No guessing which way you lean.
It's almost like they are begging us to vote for Trump.
Yeah, the thing I hate most about Suderman is that his dishonesty is so blatant I'm forced to take Trump's side every time. This isn't libertarian journalism, it isn't journalism at all. These are cynical hit pieces written by a shameless hack. I live in Illinois so my vote don't count. I'll be holding my nose and voting for Johnson on the off chance that the Ls can get on the board this time. But the more Suderman I read, the more I like this Trump guy.
Leaning? They shouldn't lean anywhere. They should be supporting Johnson FULL STOP. If it's revealed the entire staff of Reason doesn't vote Johnson...
There's no reason at all not to vote Johnson.
You should withhold judgment until they print "The Libertarian Case for Hillary" article. I'm sure it will be very persuasive.
^ This.
The two major parties have the worst candidates nominated in the last 50 years, and the general public appears to hate both of them equally. If there ever was a time to get behind the LP nominee, this is it.
Instead we get "lesser of two evils" argument.
Pathetic.
Yup. As flawed as Gary Johnson is (and that's mighty flawed by my estimation), he looks like George Washington compared to the other two jackasses.
"There's no reason at all not to vote Johnson."
Why not try making the case for Gary Johnson to, say, Betty and Richard Odgaard?
So she doesn't respect their beliefs if she wants to impoverish them for being true to them or otherwise force them to violate those beliefs. 'Slaver' is the precisely correct word for this woman.
Oof. The comments.
Discuss.
Which is why we have to turn Trump into LITERALLY Hitler McStalin in order to justify not voting for Johnson. Only when we're faced with the true nature of Her opponent can we see how vitally important it is to vote for Hillary.
I would consider voting for Johnson if he was, you know, libertarian.
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/article/2598088
It's the Federal Government's job to prevent discrimination in all cases - everyone has to bake a gay Nazi wedding cake.
Aside from the fact that Johnson has utterly failed to rise to the occasion. I say this as someone who has voted LP or not at all in every presidential election (including for Johnson).
Says something about this year that I would even feel dirty voting libertarian, and I voted for Bob Barr the elephant king.
As opposed to the rational and pleasant rhetoric you'd find over at... where exactly?
Right here at H-n-R, silly.
Not if you're using Tony, Shreek and Hihn as your benchmark for some stupid reason.
Godfuckingdamn, this is getting tedious.
Get used to it, it will be this way till November.
Can we get a reasonable add-on for columnists?
Can we get a reasonable add-on for columnists?
Excellent.
The genius of the commentariat!
Trump's flimsy excuse?that he is currently under audit?is one that didn't even stop Richard Nixon.
Well, Hillary's been "audited" and she won't release her emails or her Wall Street speeches.
It's bullshit all the way down.
"The [H-1B] regulations define a "specialty occupation" as requiring theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge in a field of human endeavor[1] including but not limited to biotechnology, chemistry, architecture, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, medicine and health, education, law, accounting, business specialties, theology, and the arts, and requiring the attainment of a bachelor's degree or its equivalent as a minimum"
How is H-1B reform hypocritical because Trump's clubs hire immigrant "housekeepers, cooks, and servers"?
Does being a housekeeper require a bachelor's degree?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-1B_visa
Does being a housekeeper require a bachelor's degree?
Hey! Community colleges are America's best-kept secret!
I am so goddamn sick of Americans being locked out of housekeeping jobs by the goddamn H-1B program!
I can't respect this any more.
Seek help, Suderman. And by seek help, I mean step outside of your bias, not try moar harder to become the Ta-Nehisi Coates of Team Sort Of Libertarianish.
He shall commit his white body to the wheel?
Pretty much Exhibit A this week of how Reason is devolving into just another transmission channel for DemOp talking points.
Robert Conquest's second law of politics:
"Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing."
I used to roll my eyes at that one, but the evidence has become too strong to ignore.
Reason isn't right wing but I was hoping that there was something equivalent for libertarian organizations.
Who the heck is Robert Conquest, and why is he plagiarizing John O'Sullivan?
The short version is: He was a historian who famously wrote a book claiming that Stalin committed attrocities during the 1930's that was widely criticized as hyperbolic by the Left. Of course, history would prove that he was correct.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Conquest
"In 1968, Conquest published what became his best-known work, The Great Terror: Stalin's Purge of the Thirties, the first comprehensive research of the Great Purge, which took place in the Soviet Union between 1934 and 1939.
...
After the opening up of the Soviet archives in 1991, detailed information was released that Conquest argued supported his conclusions. When Conquest's publisher asked him to expand and revise The Great Terror, Conquest is famously said to have suggested the new version of the book be titled I Told You So, You Fucking Fools. In fact, the mock title was jokingly proposed by Conquest's old friend, Sir Kingsley Amis."
I think that Trump did pretty well with turning the email stuff back on Hillary. It could have been worded more carefully, so it would have been a little harder for the tardpress to scream "Treason!11!1," but it worked fairly well, and set up a nice little trap about the importance of supposedly worthless emails about yoga and wedding plans.
The debates are going to be some high comedy.
Honestly, I think Trump is going to destroy Clinton in the debates. He's a rambling clown, but her programming is still a bit deficient at mimicking natural human emotions.
Yep.
Wait till she starts in with the coughing and he whips out a bottle of "Trump Water".
I agree, but imagine how more effective he could be by being frustratingly polite?
Imagine if he had just said: "I wonder if Wikileaks also has those 30,000 emails she wiped off her illegal server before handing it over to the FBI?"
No Russia OMFG! No "election interference." No call for anything. It would focus all of it back on her, and anyone complaining about him looks even touchier and defensive than normal.
I thought injecting Russia into it was kind of brilliant. It got the Democrats to claim that those missing emails were a matter of national security.
^^^^THIS^^^^
First we were told the emails were ho-hum stuff that had nothing but personal day-to-day boring content, let alone national security impact, to then have the DNC operatives with bylines invoke the red Scare because "National Security!"...
"I agree, but imagine how more effective he could be by being frustratingly polite?"
Reference Mitt Romney.
Just wait til all the cries of misogyny reverberate across the land every time Trump wins a debate against her.
Nah. Nobody in the press will actually admit that he won a debate against her, nor will the Hillary sycophants.
You can say that again!
Today they are all talking about Hillary's historical speech. How can the same boring and failed ideological nonsense, repackaged and re branded as all new, be historic? If anything it was lamer than usual, but it is why she has not given an interview to the press for close to 2 years...
Nah. Nobody in the press will actually admit that he won a debate against her, nor will the Hillary sycophants.
I was perfectly willing to admit that Joe Biden slapped Paul Ryan with his dick in their debate, even though Joe Biden was wrong every time he opened his mouth. I'll know who won, and others will too even if they can't admit it. Mark my words and mark them good, Trump=misogyny will be a bigger more spectacular meme after one or two of their debates than it ever was during the Megyn Kelly debacle.
He's going to do well because his goals are not the goals of the typical GOP candidate. I don't doubt that, from an academic perspective, that she can run circles around him.....but Trump's not out there to do some kind of college debate. He's going to mock her and needle her to the point that she's going to get flustered. He's not going to follow in the genteel footsteps of McCain and Romney.
The debates are going to be some high comedy.
We might be doomed, but at least we're gonna be entertained as we ride this bomb to Hell, Slim-Pickens-style.
For the uninitiated -- This Machine is referring to the film "Dr. Strangelove", a documentary about the Cold War.
Who are you, the narrator?
For the uninitiated, SugarFree has quoted The Simpsons, season 6, episode 3, "Itchy & Scratchy Land."
We'll meet again ....
There's a surprisingly rich vein of yuks to be mined in seriously explaining jokes, memes, and figures of speech as if the listener were from another culture.
I still don't think Hillary will debate Trump, unless she is trailing badly in the polls and needs a Hail Mary play.
Have they still not negotiated the schedule? Trump will kill her on that if she won't debate him.
If she doesn't, I'm hoping Trump debates Johnson. With a third, empty podium onstage.
Or a Hillary bobblehead and questions are still directed at "her."
"Really, Secretary Clinton? Are you refusing to rebut Mr. Trump's points? You still have 3 minutes."
A two-minute clip of the bobblehead bouncing up and down silently will then be posted around the Internet under the headline "Watch Hillary Clinton DESTROY Donald Trump on foreign policy!"
Amusingly enough, I'm guessing that would get laughs from both the Left and the Right.
They should just have someone clicking "play" on the 10 hour Hillary cackling video whenever it's her turn to debate. (then pausing it each time the moderator says her time is up...with a few second delay for realism)
They do have debates scheduled. Three of them.
http://www.uspresidentialelect.....-schedule/
I'm still not convinced she'll debate him. She can always refuse to do so on the grounds that he's evil and bigoted, and the DemOp Media will applaud her bravery.
Or, she will have her apparat in the media complain that Trump won't submit to their every demand, and the debates are cancelled because Trump is evil and bigoted.
"I'm simply too tolerant to share a stage with Donald Trump."
+1
She'll debate him. She'll do better than you expect because Trump's a lot more effective in the Twitter world than he is on a live stage, but I also think she's going to have a hard time dealing with his stream-of-consciousness rambling. The key to him winning those debates is by hammering on the fact that she's a corrupt, unlikeable witch and hitting her from the left in a way that Bernie Sanders was too much of a weakling to execute.
I imagine it will be kind of hard for her team to prepare her for Trump considering the way he just comes out left field with things.
"She'll debate him. She'll do better than you expect because Trump's a lot more effective in the Twitter world than he is on a live stage,"
I heard this repeatedly during the Republican nomination process. Remember all the articles on how Cruz the master debater was going to destroy Trump? That went no where. Maybe a 1 vs 1 will make a difference, but at this point I'm doubtful.
Remember all the articles on how Cruz the master debater was going to destroy Trump? That went no where.
Yeah, but Cruz never had the media crafting a narrative for him the way Hillary will. Everyone who's not a socon apocolyptasist hates his guts. The DNC emails showed that there is blatant collusion going on between several media organs and the DNC, so Trump's success basically hinges on him turning Hillary into a seizuring, coughing mess. His margin of error is actually pretty small.
I pointed out to a prog-tard that Trump's supposed "sedition" wouldn't have even been an issue had Hillary not broken the fucking law and her own boss's revised executive order regarding personal email, and that it was a bit rich to be complaining about the scary Russians when they mocked Romney four years ago for doing the exact same thing. Not surprisingly, I didn't get a response back.
More hysterical blubbering from Suderman. Is this cross-posted at Vox?
At the DNC, meanwhile, a wide array of speakers criticized Trump in fairly harsh terms.
No shit?
I'm convinced. Worse than Hitler!
a wide array of speakers
They had proggy Muslims, proggy trannies, proggy apparatchiks - yup, a wide array.
In other words, Trump stole the media cycle all goddamn week.
The quadrennial meeting of the Wretched Hive of Scum and Brilliant has just been put in recess and Sudermsn still focused in Trump? OK.
*villainy - dammit!
You had it right the first time.
Sudermsn though, that was pretty brilliant.
'Wretched Hive of Scum and Brilliant'
Band name or album title, you decide.
I am the Hive of Scum and unauthorized use of my name may result in idle threats.
This was the online community that Trump?a major party presidential candidate?chose to engage with.
Holy fucking shitballs. I've actually been to that subreddit before (shut up, memewatching is a guilty pleasure) and witnessed firsthand almost none of the shit that Vice (and Suderman) are hyperventilating about. In fact, I've seen an incredible amount of support for gays, blacks, and women and any "racist, homophobic, and generally unpleasant online rhetoric" is downvoted and removed by the moderators.
Get a fucking grip, dude.
When Journalist convince themselves that a politician is the next Hitler, facts no longer matter. The normal rules no longer apply and you can do whatever is necessary to stop them. Suderman drank the Kool-Aid, I don't believe we'll ever get him back.
It's a shame, because he used to write some decent analysis on the Obamacare sham. At least I think he did. I can't remember, it's been so long...
This just proves you're more racist than Irish. Racist.
The particular subreddit that Trump chose to engage with has been described by Vice
I stopped reading there...
I've seen some /r/TheDonald regulars who are big into "race realism".
I'm sure there's a few out there; it's got nearly 200,000 subscribers, after all. But I think the worst of the worst got purged when they demodded one of their biggest shit-stirrers awhile ago. Still, while you might be able to call them anti-immigrant and Islamophobic, I just don't see the other accusations sticking with evidence.
Fuck, I know too much about /r/the_donald. This is what happens when you go lookin' for memes, kids. The internet starts gettin' it's thorny barbs in ya.
Holding Trump responsible for the online community that asks him questions is bizarre--no matter what kind of people they are.
I heard Suderman used to write to a community of people who called for wood chippers!
A wood chipper here
And a wood chipper there
Here a chip
There a chip
Everywhere a chip chip
That describes Hit and Run.
Hey! Our racism is *not* coded!
Shut up your shvartze mouth, it IS.
I meant -- It's "coded".

Suderman makes a great point there, and I trust Suderman:
you should never trust anyone who associates with media that has 'politically incorrect users'.
Reason has lots of politically-incorrect users, and Suderman is associated with Reason.
Therefore, Suderman can never be trusted.
Which is a great point that Suderman makes. And I trust Suderman.
Who shaves Suderman?
I can hardly wait for the Team Blue convention and all the articles that Reason will run about it.
What?
Really?
Never mind.
*ahem*
Don't expect me to read upthread. Time is money and I'm a (((Jew))).
Ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?
And then, one day, the wolf really did come. He devoured the shrieking little boy as the villagers laughed.
And they all lived happily ever after.
The End.
I'm partial to the Oglaf version (SFW, which is not always guaranteed with Oglaf).
There should be a Reason mega post about Trump Derangement Syndrome, and I'm sure there probably will be. The problem is that it may be written by someone on Reason staff who has Trump Derangement Syndrome.
I wish Cavanaugh were here to write it.
Walker would make a good candidate to write that piece with his expertise on conspiracy theories. Not that Trump Derangement Syndrome is a conspiracy theory, it's just that Walker is able to write about people who believe in conspiracy theories with respect, and writing about people with Trump Derangement Syndrome will require the same tact.
The piece I'm thinking about should define Trump Derangement Syndrome, give some examples, and then mention some ways to tell if you might have it--because people have it without realizing it. People with Trump Derangement Syndrome are often like paranoids who don't know they're paranoid--they're just sure that everyone is legitimately out to get them. Yes, even you may have Trump Derangement Syndrome and not even realize it!
There should be a Reason mega post about Trump Derangement Syndrome, and I'm sure there probably will be.
But will it be pro, or con?
It should be neither!
It should just mention that it exists and it may be the driving force of this election cycle. It's in the media, and it's driving average people's thinking, too.
I think this article is an excellent example of it in action, where being so disgusted with Trump makes you see everything he does and says as confirming your very worst fears.
I'm sure some of our fellow commenters have it, too. Hazel, for instance, is usually a rational, thoughtful, well-informed person. Presented with evidence that may not confirm the worst possible interpretation of something Trump said, she suddenly can't see it--because it's about Trump.
That's probably a pretty good test for Trump Derangement Syndrome right there: If you can see the other side of a particular argument clearly--so long as it isn't about Trump--but suddenly can't see the other side--when it is about Trump--then you may have Trump Derangement Syndrome.
If you can talk about Obama killing babies as collateral damage to drone strikes, but imagine that Trump wants to target just the babies? Then you may have Trump Derangement Syndrome.
We could come up with a dozen like that.
It should really just be called "Derangement Syndrome" at this point, because the anti-Hillary people have it just as bad as the Anti-Trumpers. She's an opportunistic liar who thinks rules are for little people, to be sure, but the supernatural levels of evil ascribed to her by some corners of the right and the ludicrous conspiracy theories they spin are just as bad as any animus towards Trump.
There's no need ludicrous conspiracy theories.
She accepted money from foreign governments while she was the Secretary of State.

A question? Hmmm, I think you are going on the List.
I miss Cavanaugh and Moynihan.
A lot.
Well, at least this collection of horror stories that Suderman has aggregated shows that the media can do a little detective work when they really need to.
Suderman may not realize you're being sarcastic.
What's wrong with you people?
WHY CAN'T YOU SEE HOW HORRIBLE AMERICA WOULD BE IF TRUMP WERE ELECTED?
YOU'RE ALL STUPID AND MEAN.
He's racist! That means he's gonna put y'all back in chains!
And blocking Muslim immigration? How could America survive the economic and cultural catastrophe that ensues?
And he said mean things to women. Only a matter of time before he takes away all their civil rights!
One of these days, someone needs to gather up all of Suderman's Trump rants and publish them in a book, for posterity and amusement. I suggest "The Suderman Fits" as a working title.
I would like to see the emails that Hillary (illegally) deleted.
I am sure her email server was hacked, hence the hacker has those deleted emails. Citizens of the US have a right to see those emails.
I fail to see how Trump said anything disreputable. He was joking, of course, but he was also serious and correct: those emails should have been retained and subject to FOIA. Those emails should have been released by Hillary, but she is too crooked to actually follow the law. Given Hillary's criminality, those emails should be released by whoever has them.
You know who has her emails?
The NSA.
And if they don't, the agency should be closed.
Hacked? How do you know they don't contain info that she sent to them in return for...who knows what?
So what in the hell is going on with Hillary's face and tongue?

That's where the anti-coughing module goes in humanoid robots.
Check out the AM Links, Drake. RC asked that very question, and I answered it in 2 places. Just Ctrl + F my handle in a search and you'll find them quickly, since I am too lazy (and short on time) to link.
Also, Suderman: As a physician, Peter, you *really* need to consider some professional help, both for your writing choice and subject matter, as well as some counseling and therapy for your TDS. I hope McArdle isn't putting you up to this or threatening you with couch duty for non-compliance.
I'm being sincere here, Peter. This is unhealthy for you, as I remember those years of good ObamneyCare articles and posts (except when you used/use that douchey "PPACA" cocktail Journolist nonsense).
"lies, threats, outrages, reversals, hypocrisy, dubious associations, and broken promises" - Sounds like a typical politician to me.
Don't tell me you couldn't write an article with that headline about Hillary.
I agree, it sounds like an accurate description of the Hilldog to me.
But we're not talking about Hillary because it's RNC Convention week, oh, wait...
Haha, we have to make sure the queen has her coronation.
I'm telling you, that 1099 from Vladimir Putin, World Domination Enterprises llc is what will finally derail the Trump train.
SHOW US THE 1040.
I think it's hilarious he made the Hilldog and her campaign squirm when he cleverly brought her server issue back into the news by asking Russia to help find them. Boo freaking Hoo, waaaah is all I heard, who gives a rats ass if he asked Russia to help find them - Every Tom, Dick and Harry is snooping and hacking and monitoring everything. The US gubmint tries to act all shocked and appalled. Gee whiz.
The Trump campaign response to the accusations of treason should be.....
"hey...I'm not encouraging it. But frankly, if they are so unbelievably incompetent to allow themselves to get hacked by the Russians, I really don't see why the rest of us can't see what the Russians saw. At the end of the day we have to believe the Democrat nominee for the POTUS is either so utterly incompetent as to allow her private and government emails to be stolen by Russian, or she was willfully allowing information to be accessed for unknown reasons. So which is it? Incompetent or treasonous?"
boom...winning.
Week of lies, outrages, broken promises, etc. blah blah blah.
And still not one iota worse than Hillary in any way whatsoever.
All these comments and not a one of you stood up for poor Suderman. Can't you tell he can't even...
I'd stand up for cis-Suderman, if he would write his own stuff, sometimes. But all we've been getting lately is sour-grapes trans-mcardle
Hey, you better be nice, or he'll tell Megan, and she'll come over here and beat you up.
I can only imagine the horseshit Pete is going to excrete over the next four years if Trump wins. I don't think it will matter one whit what Trump actually does, it will just be this same ol' shit endlessly.
I swear, part of me hopes Trump wins just for the sight of all the heads that will explode. If the frothing could be turned into electricity, it could replace dozens of coal plants.
Pete...Pete....Clinton is awful, the DNC was such a joke that it made the RNC look like it was produced by Cecil B. DeMille, and you are clearly being trolled - just go to Salon already.
The best part of Suderman ran down the crack of his mama's ass and ended up as a brown stain on the mattress.
I'm going to vote for Trump twice just to spite Voxxin' Pete.
Suderman is absolutely right to be outraged over a major party nominee who was under federal criminal investigation throughout the primary campaign, who was absolved of criminal liability only weeks before his party coronated him as its nominee by an Attorney General who is also a member of his party (based on a legal defense - lack of mens rea - that is not an element of the crime he was accused of committing and that his party is on record as opposing as a legal defense), who's family member had an allegedly-impromptu meeting with the AG one week before the AG announced that there would be no prosecution, and who, only days before the decision not to prosecute was announced, publicly announced that he was seriously considering keeping the AG in office if he wins the election...
What? That wasn't Trump? That was who???
Never mind.
Maybe the Reason editors are hoping the faux-libertarian Trumpsters will eventual take the hint and go pollute some other comments section with their incessant whining.
Pretty sure the only faux-libertarian whining is sitting above the comments section.

I would like to speak for Trump in reply to this empty spittle flecked anti Trump. Bite me.
The only thing good I can say about Trump is that he's about 10 times better than that greedy, scheming, lying, megalomaniacal ogress who's competing for the same job.
Is Gary Johnson still running?
We have a choice between two selfish, greedy megalomaniacs for president. Now ask yourself this question: do you want a selfish, greedy megalomaniac with the political connections and power to their plans into action, or do you want a selfish, greedy megalomaniac who is an ineffective clown without power?
