Hillary Clinton's name was also repeatedly booed at the convention. Even Bernie Sanders was booed earlier in the day after telling a group of his supporters to vote for Clinton over Donald Trump.
Bill Clinton will headline tonight's festivities at the Democratic National Convention.
Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson "is gaining momentum and only needs two more percentage points in the polls to clinch a spot in the presidential debates."
Two men claiming affiliation with ISIS killed a priest and took hostages in a church in Normandy, France, before they were shot and killed by French police.
"Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will have talks with Vladimir Putin in Russia next month amid a rapid warming in relations following the failed military coup in Turkey."

      The duopoly won't let him in unless both parties think that Gary Johnson will hurt the other party.
      
      Gary is claiming that he is going to take more votes from Hillary, so Trump may support his presence on stage.
      
      If Hillary thinks that Gary will take the votes of the NeverTrump and classical liberal crowd (which I think is more likely), she will support his presence.
      
      It's just a cynical game.
      
      If GJ does end up on stage, I hope he rips them both to shreds.

        To GJ, Hillary is a "wonderful public servant". To his running mate, she is a close friend with whom he has a "lifelong bond".
        
        It's not going to happen, but if he got into the debates GJ would only try to shred Trump. Trump would only insult GJ, but he'd shred the credibility of the LP for having nominated GJ.

      It's supposed to be an average of five polls. So yeah, still a ways off, since plenty of polls are still showing him in the mid single digits.

      It has to be 5 national polls. Right now he's around 8 or 9 percent if you average that many polls, safely on the sidelines.
      
      But the threshold should really be 1 percent, like it is in the primaries. That would be enough to keep out the riff-raff with no followers.

    It occurred to me yesterday that the increasing power of the office of president raises the stakes for those seeking it. I wonder how much more it will have to grow before candidates start literally killing each other.

      Doubt it would be the candidates. The dirty little secret is that most of them know one another and are vicious mostly for the cameras. What will get violent are the Two Tribes. As we move to either Red World or Blue World, most members of the tribe will get a lot more adamant that it's got to be their way.

        There was a moment in a 2004 presidential debate between Bush and Kerry where the moderator asked Bush something along the lines of what he thought of his opponent. Bush led off with "Well, he went to Yale, nothing wrong with that." And they shared a little chuckle over it, like, yeah, we're part of the same elite clique.

        That would make Election 2016 much like the reign of Emperor Justinian and his politically active wife Theodora. Justinian supported the Greens whereas Theodora supported the Blues. Their reign exploited the Blue-Green rivalry to their mutual advantage. The fact that their stirring the pot would occasionally lead to a few thousand heads getting bashed was of little concern to the Byzantine emperor.

  But I feel it is worth pointing out that most things don't have just one cause. Yeah, it's Islamic terrorism and it's stupid to tiptoe around that. But with the guys who aren't clearly directly associated with ISIS or some similar group, you have to figure they've got other problems too.

        That is the administration's line on this, isn't it? They're losing ground and relevance, and 'lashing out' with terrorist attacks keeps them in the news and makes it sound like they are still a force to be reckoned with, so any budding Islamists should join the cause. I think there's some validity to that, though sometimes Kerry and Obama put it in the dumbest words available.

        All I'm saying is that some of these people don't seem to have been actively recruited, but were more inspired by ISIS or whomever. There are definitely two pretty distinct kinds of attacks that have happened in Europe of late. Obviously well coordinated and prepared attacks like Paris and Brussels, and much smaller and less organized things that appear to only involve one person or maybe a small group.
        
        I'm not trying to downplay the nastiness of the situation. I'm just interested in why people do such things.

        85 is the average, so presumably there's a huge subset of that population well below 80 that pass for 'normal' in those societies.         Also, when were terrorists required to carry membership cards and decoder rings to be "authentic" Islamo-Mohammedans? As far as I am concerned, "...inspired by ISIS...," is the same as in the name of ISIS, or Mewhammad, or any other Islamo-Mufti-Nazi type.

        And the distinction is important because the lone wolf type guys are harder to stop ahead of time, but do less damage, both directly and in terms of the government response. Large attacks that obviously have a well organized network behind them should be easier to prevent through police work and intelligence gathering and are more likely to result in government reactions like indefinite states of emergency and crackdowns on the political fringe, like we've seen in France and Germany.

      No, you are wrong. There are some attackers who don't appear to have been directly recruited by ISIS or anyone like that or to have been directed by them. There are reasons why these people commit these attacks when thousands of similarly situated Muslims don't.
      
      I'm not trying to confuse or obfuscate anything or make excuses for anyone. I know it's hard to understand when you are an obsessive, stupid asshole who thinks that anyone who believes that anyone who questions your narrative in any way is an apologist and probably an enabler of Islamic terrorists, and most likely a communist too.

      Before he shot up the Pulse night club, Omar Mateen's affiliation with ISIS was not "clear" and may not have been "direct". Obviously, after he announced his intentions over the phone and then carried out the attack, the affiliation is pretty clear and how direct it was became irrelevant. Personally, I suspect his wife was the one with the closer, more direct affiliation and she encouraged him (not that it absolves him of any guilt).
      
      I can't say for sure what Zeb meant, but the point is that it's not always known in advance just what people adhere to or intend. The strongest proof of intent is action. Maybe if Mateen and his wife were under greater surveillance, there would have been a lot less ambiguity. Or maybe there wouldn't have been; there's no doubt that there were some "warning signs" of danger from him in general, but that's not the same thing as a connection to ISIS.
      
      Yes, the media is feckless and will lie to build a narrative. But your hyperventillating overcorrection is not any better. Unless you have something to present which contradicts what I said.

        I thought it was pretty simple, but it seems not.
        
        Some attacks are obviously coordinated and supplied by well organized groups. Some appear not to be at all. That doesn't mean that the small attacks aren't terrorism or aren't a big fucking problem. But there is a big difference between the guy who gets all worked up and goes off the rails and elaborate networks of people supplying guns and explosives for well coordinated attacks.
        
        Maybe it's all irrelevant to any actual solution, I don't know, and if I did know I wouldn't be in a position to do anything about it. But loudly proclaiming that Islam is the entire problem isn't helping either. You aren't going to make the religion disappear and you aren't going to remove millions of Muslims from Europe without a whole lot of trouble and bloodshed.

He demands that we somehow prove that the guy physically went to Raqqa to receive paramilitary style training, or got direct shipments of weapons from there, as if this really means anything.

        I worked with a civil servant (at a federal agency) who slept on the job. That is, people 3-4 cubes away could hear him snoring away his afternoon. He kept his job for years and years.
        
        What finally did him in was surfing p0rn at work. After being caught more than once and given more than one warning, his civil servant bosses were finally able to get rid of him.

I haven't been watching the DNC coverage, but I'm guessing every attempt is being made by the media to downplay the divide in the Democratic party and the leak scandal? Lots of tossing around the Russian/Putin angle and how they want the GOP to win the White House (hinting that you are doing their will by voting Trump)?

Hillary Illustrated for Kids

If you've ever yearned for a hagiography of Hillary Clinton fit to read your kids at bedtime, you're finally in luck: Earlier this year, HarperCollins Children's Books released Hillary Rodham Clinton: Some Girls Are Born to Lead, written by Michelle Martel and illustrated by LeUyen Pham.

It should be said off the bat that Pham's illustrations are terrific. The problem with the Some Girls Are Born to Lead is its content. In order to work as a children's book, the life story of Hillary Clinton has to be painfully shoehorned into a Joseph Campbell-style hero's journey, with a colorful, flawless heroine overcoming an endless parade of darkly nefarious foes. Those of us alive during these years will read the result and marvel at a joyous tale that bears little resemblance to the events it purports to recount. When our story begins, "in the 1950s, it was a man's world. Only boys could grow up to have powerful jobs. Only boys had no ceilings on their dreams."

The accompanying illustration holds up Jackie Robinson as the beneficiary of patriarchal privilege, which is surely a historical first:

B.C. to bring in real estate tax on foreign buyers

"There is evidence now that suggests very wealthy foreign buyers have raised the overall price of housing for people in B.C.," she said at a news held in front of a local commercial and residential construction project.

"If we are going to put British Columbians first, and that is what we are intending to do, we need to make sure we do everything we can to try and keep housing affordable," said Clark. "Ultimately, the goal is to affect the demand by making sure it's maybe a little tougher for foreign buyers to find their way into our market."

Finance Minister Mike de Jong, who flanked Clark at the news conference, said recent housing data helped persuade the government to impose the 15-per-cent tax on property transfers.

"We have a better sense of the degree of that today than we did even a month-and-a-half or two months ago," he said, adding that revenue from the tax would be used to fund housing, rental and support programs.

The editorial board of El Ma?ana, one of the largest newspapers in the border state of Tamaulipas, penned a piece called "Yes to the Border Wall ? but in Mexico's South." The piece praises the idea of border wall, not on the border with Mexico, but on the border with Central America.

"Along the Mexican border peace and quiet came to an end, Central Americans played a large influence," El Ma?ana's piece claimed.

The Mexican border newspaper provides a controversial view on the Border Wall; which is one of the main topics in Trump's campaign.

"Mexico's southeast has two borders; one with Guatemala and one with Belize, that do not provide any benefit, but on the contrary only problems are brought by these crossing points that are being used for the new invasion. The one use by Central American's looking for a way into the United States. " El Ma?ana's editorial board wrote.

Turkey: Independent monitors must be allowed to access detainees amid torture allegations

Amnesty International has credible reports that Turkish police in Ankara and Istanbul are holding detainees in stress positions for up to 48 hours, denying them food, water and medical treatment, and verbally abusing and threatening them. In the worst cases some have been subjected to severe beatings and torture, including rape.

"Reports of abuse including beatings and rape in detention are extremely alarming, especially given the scale of detentions that we have seen in the past week. The grim details that we have documented are just a snapshot of the abuses that might be happening in places of detention," said Amnesty International's Europe director John Dalhuisen.

"It is absolutely imperative that the Turkish authorities halt these abhorrent practices and allow international monitors to visit all these detainees in the places they are being held."

On a purely anecdotal level, Johnson chatter is definitely on the rise. I have maybe... 3? 4? actual libertarian friends but a lot of people I know in general are starting to talk about him. Also heard his name mentioned on a local morning radio show. I've heard the "it's a waste of your vote" only a couple times, surprisingly. The main "criticism" I hear though is "he supports laissez faire and that's what gave us so much income inequality!"

Donald Trump's Real Ambition

I normally stay clear of psychologically profiling public figures. But when the writing is so clearly on the wall, when the stakes are so high, and when the data is so consistent, I am inclined to comment. With Trump, what I see is so clearly a textbook case of a metaphorical computer program running amok, that I feel its my imperative to reveal the source code. Hopefully by making Trump's ambition open-source, we can clearly see where it is headed, and we can take action to halt the program before it reaches its ultimate conclusion.

What is this program? There are many ways to frame it. Some therapists prefer to couch it in terms of "narcissism". "Oh look at that Trump, he's such a grandiose narcissist!" But I believe this is not a helpful description for several reasons.[...]

No, I believe we need to look deeper at the underlying motivation behind virtually everything Trump does, from his choice of teammates to his tweets to his private and public statements. In my estimation, Trump is driven by one thing and one thing only: the search for glory. Everything stems from this one simple fact, and everything falls into place in a predicable fashion once we fully understand the operation of this fundamentally human drive.

Friendly Reminder: Bernie Sanders Is A Bigger Authoritarian Than Donald Trump

Somehow it seems to escape the attention of most of those covering the race that Bernie is a champion of an economic system that has caused more suffering and destitution than any other in modern history. It is almost impossible for nations to kick. Yet Sanders has, at various times, proposed state control over whole ? or large parts of ? the energy, health care, transportation, and education sectors because, well, he's a socialist. (Yes, democratic socialists tend to attain power through "democratic" means in countries where democratic systems are in place.)

I'm old enough (and I say this seriously) to recall a time when it was considered contemptible to suggest that liberals were in any way sympathetic to the cause of collectivism. Even now, Twitter has a RedScareBot that will mock you as some kind of paranoid McCarthyite for bringing up "socialism." Yet on Monday, Americans were subjected to the economic illiteracy of three of the most extreme anti-capitalist politicians ? Keith Ellison, Elizabeth Warren, and Sanders ? ever to appear on stage at a major party's convention.

      I used to have a friend that worked for Brookshires. He gave away the fruits and veggies to me. I used them for aerial pistol targets. It was a lot of fun. I probably burned through 50,000 22LR in my K-22 in a couple of years.

      They are all of it. Walmart doesn't throw away food because they're just big corporate meanies. They throw away food because they don't want to be sued for giving anyone "tainted" food.
      
      I'd also say that, while I personally abhor wasting food, on a large scale food that goes to "waste" is not inherently concerning. If the production rate exceeds the consumption rate, the difference has to go somewhere. In our increasingly preservative-averse culture, that somewhere is the trash.

35 deaths linked to scope infections after Olympus told execs not to warn hospitals

Thirty-five people died in the United States after contracting infections from contaminated medical scopes made by Olympus Corp. in the years after a company official told American executives not to issue widespread warnings to U.S. hospitals "about potentially deadly infections from tainted medical scopes," a new report says.

That decision not to to proactively issue warnings to U.S hospitals was made despite the fact that Tokyo-based Olympus ? which controls 85 percent of the American gastrointestinal scope market ? was already warning European customers that a scope made by the company had a risk of contamination after two dozen infections were reported in hospitals in France and Holland.

An Olympus VP in Pennsylvania in January 2013, knowing about the cases in Europe, and also knowing that Olympus was investigating a similar case in a Pittsburgh hospital, asked in an email, "Should [we] also be communicating to our users the information that [Olympus Europe] is communicating to their European users?"[...]

Nishina's email continued, telling the American vice president that Olympus' "risk assessment" had indicated that that risk was "acceptable."

One 44-year-old woman in the study explained her thought process during a period crisis. "My first response is usually, 'Oh shit!' out of irritation," she says. "Then I panic because I know I don't have any supplies. I get angry with myself for not being prepared. Then, I pray I have quarters for the tampon machine, and then, I pray there is a dispenser."
      
      They sometimes forget to be prepared, therefore the company must provide them with whatever they want.

  "Who the Hell would want to steal this?" is a perfectly rational though process. But it's wrong. One thing that I've recently been astonished to learn is that thieves really don't care what they're stealing. For example, that "make sure valuables are out of sight" advice is utter BS. Criminals typically subscribe to the "we have to break into the car to find out what's in it" school of thought. I imagine whoever stole the leg didn't really know how valuable prosthetics are. It was just a thing that wasn't theirs that they could get their hands on. Therefore, it was important to steal it.

Last night, NBC Nightly News did a three-minute segment at the top of the hour about the DNC email hacks.

Did it discuss Debbie Wassername Schultz's firing? Briefly.

Did it discuss DWS's immediate rehiring by the Clinton campaign? Not a mention

What about the revelation that big donors are being awarded appointments? Again, not a peep.

"Wait a minute," you may be wondering. "If NBC dedicated more than 10% of its entire nightly program to the DNC hack but didn't discuss the most appalling aspects of it, what did they talk about?"

Well, we got a good deal of speculation, based entirely on groundless claims by Hillary, that Putin or his men did (and not this Guccifer 2.0 character who claimed responsibility a while back, or, more likely, numerous hacks because their cyber security appears to be zilch). Then we got a full minute discussing the apparent admiration and friendship between Trump and Putin.

They did not directly state that Putin leaked the DNC emails to help Trump, possibly with his consent, but it was heavily insinuated.

Random thought:

In the media - even sometimes here at Reason - I see Democrats missteps and problems either ignored or glossed over. If not, then the tone of the article has the bad situations as just minor bumps in the road.

But a Republican - or non-Dem - candidate, everything is always just spiraling out of control, and they are just one step away from making some political gaffe that will doom their run for office.

The same effect seems especially obvious on Facebook (memes or shared news stories). How much of this is driven by the media or just plain team politics?

Yes I know Team Red has the same type of operation going on in their small media world, but it certainly doesn't seem to drive "the national narrative" like the left can.

I caught her and my wife playing my old GTA game one day. They were driving around, following all the traffic rules. They both agreed that game was boring.         That's just good strategy. On a major road the lights have a tendency to cascade; being the first one to the red light decreases the possibility of hitting the next one and the one after that.
        
        This is especially apparent when the one is stuck behind a clearly superior motorist that seems to be intent on catching every single one.

  If every state used the NE/ME method of assigning electoral votes, Romney would have won. First time since 1960 it would have made a difference.
  
  Its a pretty good fraud prevention method too. Just like the EC prevents fraud in one state from throwing the entire election (IL in 1960 and FL in 2000 as possible exceptions), assigning by congressional district makes fraud in one district less valuable, preventing those IL and FL exceptions above.

    I am generally against that system. I like the electoral college as it is. That said, I had never thought about the fraud angle. It does make it would greatly limit the potential good voter fraud could do a candidate. Now, if the Democrats invent 100,000 votes in Chicago, it can get them the entire state of Illinois. With that system, it just gets them the electoral votes associated with Chicago by a bigger margin, which they would have won anyway.
    
    I am not sure that convinces me to change my opinion. But it definitely makes me think about it. That is a great point.

      The reason I originally like it, is that it changes the target for campaigning. Right now, there is no need for any campaigning in a large number of states.
      
      In some senses, that is good, it means I dont see many presidential ads. But it also gets you neglected.
      
      Parts of KY are in play under the ME/NE system. The funny thing is, until recently, KY was a swing state, it went with the winner election after election. Now it isnt in play.
      
      CA isnt really in play, but it becomes a big deal under this system, as there are red parts of the state. Same for Texas in reverse.
      
      It makes the EC more representative without going full democracy.

        The EC, plus winner-take-all, tilts the process in favor of the big states.
        
        I think that's fair compensation for the advantage given small states in the Senate.
        
        It sounds Rube Goldbergesque - compensating for the Wyoming=California set-up in the Senate with a presidential election system which gives the advantage to the large states.
        
        But so long as we have the system we have, I think this sort of balance is good, at least in principle.

      As I've pointed out before, the "winner-takes-all" system has no particular connection to the electoral college. The states have always been free to decide how their electors are chosen, and winner-takes-all did not come to be the norm until the early-mid 1800s. None of the proponents of the EC thought it necessary, or even advisable, for every state to use the same system, never mind specifically winner-takes-all.

What do people here think of wonks specifically the wonk blog on wapo? I was reading some and they appear to be a bunch of hacks. There seems to be a trend among st political journalists that they are enlightened and superior...thus they should be able to socially engineer society. I think it harkens back to Marx idea of forming a utopia by perfecting humans....which of course is dangerous thinking.

  The term "wonk" has a particular meaning in Washington. It means some douchebag a few years out of college who gets paid to repeat one side's talking points about a particular subject for which he has no experience, knowledge or expertise. For example, Ezra Klein was once the Washington Post's "healthcare wonk". Klein is a douche bag who had a degree in Political science, had never worked in the field and was completely unqualified for even the most low level job in the field. Klein was however just out of college and expert at repeating the Prog talking points about healthcare and was thus given the title of "wonk".

  It's basically how media is today. Almost all of the old-school journalists were trained in an educational environment that didn't cater to the lowest common denominator. They developed actual beats and contacts that added substance to their stories, which meant getting out of the office and talking to people face-to-face instead of a digital umbilicus.
  
  But in the internet age, with subscriptions of paper news through the floor and news organizations dependent on ad revenue to keep afloat, they've dropped most of these people in favor of intellectually stunted click-bait writers who are much cheaper to employ and can increase web traffic.

Usually Presidents start out being more popular and gradually become less so.

Nixon's popularity rating hovered around 30% after Watergate.

Hillary's popularity rating has been holding steady at 40% since January.

If she wins the White House and becomes decreasingly popular over her first term like most Presidents do, she'll be approaching Nixon level popularity without much effort at the end of her first term.

I expect whomever wins to be a one term President. Whomever wins the White House may not even win the nomination four years from now.

  I recently saw a poll, I don't recall where, that more than 50% of both Trump's supporters and Hillary's supporters are more "against the other party's candidate" than "in favor of their own." We have an election where, whoever wins, they won't even be viewed favorably by a majority of their own party. Dark times are ahead, indeed.
  
  (Unless Trump delivers on his promise that we'll win so much we'll be bored with winning, in which case boring times are ahead.)

  And that isn't the half of it. Think about how badly the Democrats lost in the midterms with Obama in office. Obama is still a relatively popular president with the public at large. Yet still the Democrats have suffered the worst 8 years since the Civil war at the Congressional and State levels. If it is that bad under Obama, how bad will it be under a deeply unpopular Hillary? Worse still, Democrats are defending something like 20 of the 33 Senate seats up for election in 2018. If Hillary wins, 2018 could be a bloodbath of historic proportions.
  
  And yet, if Hillary loses, the Democrats lose their last candidate with any national prominence. Worse, the Bernie Bros come back with a vengeance and likely force the party to nominate someone completely out of the political mainstream. They also likely see Trump replace Kennedy, Scalia and the notorious RBG and push the court decidedly to the right for the next generation.
  
  They are fucked no matter what happens in November.

      Some of it is that. Some of it is people are loath to dislike the first black President. The Democrats have used the race card to shield Obama from the public holding him accountable for his presidency. I wonder if maybe that has done them more harm than good. Had Obama been a normal President, the public would have directed its ire on him and the rest of the Democratic party only by association. Since the Democrats and the media have bullied and guilted most of the public from directing its ire towards Obama, I think the public has instead directed it at the Democrats in general at every level. I can't vote Obama out of office or express my distaste for him but I can vote some poor bastard Democrat out of Congress or the governor's mansion as a way to vent my frustration.
      
      This is just a guess, but I really wonder if Obama had been subject to the normal criticism every President gets, if the Democrats would not have been brutalized down the ballot as badly as they have been.

      Talk about "catch and release". Ultimately, the globalists governments are as much responsible for this as ISIS, and their agenda is overt -- create the conditions ripe for widespread chaos, providing popular support for a police state and allowing them to eliminate their domestic enemies.
