In Moving Speech, GOP Sen. Tim Scott Describes Being Racially Profiled
"There's absolutely nothing more damaging to your soul than when you know you're following the rules and being treated like you are not."

"This speech is perhaps the most difficult," Sen. Tim Scott (R–S.C.) began yesterday, "because it's the most personal."
He proceeded to spend a moving 16 and a half minutes talking on the Senate floor about what it's like to be a black man in the United States—and how it feels to be treated differently from other people, and even targeted by authorities, because of what you look like. Among other striking anecdotes, he detailed being turned away from an event while two white members of his staff were admitted without question. On another occasion, despite the fact that he was wearing the pin that identifies him as a U.S. senator, a member of the Capitol Police stopped him and demanded he show ID, saying, "The pin I recognize. You, I don't."
"Keep in mind, I'm one of the easier senators to recognize," Scott quipped. (There are only two African Americans in the Senate—Scott and Democrat Corey Booker.)
The GOP rising star (who's held his seat since 2013 and served in the U.S. House and state and local politics before that) also shared that in a single year, he was stopped by cops seven times. "Not four, not five, not six, but seven times—in one year, as an elected official," he said.
Scott pointed out that the experience of feeling targeted "for nothing more than being just yourself" is widespread: "I do not know many African-American men who do not have a very similar story to tell, no matter their profession, no matter their income, no matter their disposition in life."
In one of the most powerful lines of the speech, he quoted a former staffer as saying "there's absolutely nothing more frustrating, more damaging to your soul, than when you know you're following the rules and being treated like you are not."
"Today I simply ask of you this," the senator concluded. "Recognize that just because you do not feel the pain, the anguish, of another, does not mean it does not exist."
I'd encourage you to watch the whole thing.

+1, awesome
racist!
And touch?. well said.
Ah, but was Rich describing Obama or Hillary?
It works for both of them.
Brilliant.
Dumb. Boilerplate Clinton Derangement Syndrome.
What? Why would you think he was talking about Hillary?
So, becoming more introspective, huh?
/There's always hope...
Unfortunely, at best sarcasm and at least a borderline aspie inability to perceive how others might view the utterances of someone incapable of grokking their worldview.
well if he drives like Feinstein he should be pulled over? I was pulled over seven time in one year as well and I deserved it every time, Lucky I still have a license and if i drove like I used to, I'd be in jail today if I still drove like I did in the 70/80's
Try getting pulled over and getting marked as "Race: Other" on your ticket as happened to someone white I know recently.
Maybe the senator should stop aligning himself with the political party that routinely advocates for racial and religious profiling. Self awareness was never a trait that Black conservatives had going for them.
Quick question: how come right-wingers get so moist and misty eyed when a Black conservative admits to being racially profiled, but then get belligerent and racist when John Lewis talks about cops beating him up at civil rights demonstrations and tea baggers calling him "nigger?" Team Red: They are nasty.
tea baggers calling him "nigger?"
I think I remember this story as being debunked as pure bullshit.
I'm sure it's as real as the KKK invasion of Mizzou.
Here ya go... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kYRLeJw1aG8
That was definitely a member of a tea party on that phone call, for sure. No possibility that it was anything else. Anyway, you were talking about this story which turned out to be bullshit, or at least completely unsubstantiated.
Unsubstantiated= didn't happen?
Most likely.
See, he she it's starting to "get it"!
Now give him a treat and some faint praise.
Unsubstantated = no reason to believe it happened.
How would anyone here know? Maybe you should find a GOP forum to pose your question to.
tea baggers calling him "nigger? ... I'll take $500 dollars for "Things that Never Happened" Alex
so he should align with the party that wants to strip ALL Americans of due process and put them on a secret list for having impolite thoughts? And no one called John Lewis shit, except for perhaps memory-challenged for disregarding how HE had been put on a no-fly list. But then, he's a Congressman and that sort of thing can be fixed for TopMen like him.
Troll harder, bitchboy....btw how are those mortgage payments doing?
Well, he probably shouldn't align himself with either party. Bill and Hillary, the Kind and Queen of the D's, don't seem to be all that enlightened when it comes to race either. What with the Super Predator Obama bringing Kennedy and Bill their coffee.
RRRRRETARD.
Shorter amsoc: "Get back on that plantation where you belong, boy!"
He already did: he is not a Democrat after all.
I think the Black conservative is barking up the same wrong tree as white progressives: police abuse of power may affect blacks more than other groups, but that's merely a symptom. The cause is overcriminalization, overincarceration, and massive expansion of the state. And that's something both conservatives and progressives are responsible for.
I'd add "lack of police accountability" to you list of reasons.
There's also the way police are using charges of "racism!" as cover. "We're not dangerously abusive and unaccountable, we're just racist against blacks. So you white people don't have to worry; you can trust & support us." - The Police.
Damn. Seven times? I thought I had it bad when I was stopped and searched four times in the same year because I was a white long haired hippy freak driving a shitty car.
SHAVE THOSE SIDEBURNS, MATTINGLY!!
I'M NOT HEARING ANY SOLUTIONS.
Cops need more training.
Did you listen to the whole speech? He said that he will be giving a 3rd speech offering solutions.
tea baggers calling him "nigger? ... I'll take $500 dollars for "Things that Never Happened" Alex

You are the dumbest motherfucker on here. Your link is a lie, just like your ideology. Pay your mortgage.
You know and I know that this wasn't what you were talking about. You took the bullshit story at face value then when called out on it went looking for anything that would make it look like you knew what you were talking about. So you found someone giving John Lewis the C-Span Washington Journal treatment over the phone. As if most congressmen don't have shitloads of calls like that in their voicemail.

Yeah. It's like pointing to racist comments on a youtube video and wailing about the rise of the Neo-Nazis. Never mind that there are racist comments on like, any youtube video with enough hits.
Yeah, but this isn't some legal mandate, so, y'know, does it really matter?
Civil Rights protestor John Lewis getting microaggressed against. Libs are such whiners.
https://www.archives.gov/exhibits/eyewitness/ html.php?section=2
If that's what you call microaggression, then I'd hate to see what you call regular aggression.
Amsoc is a mendacious retard who has never failed to argue in bad faith. There's no point in engaging with him.
I dunno WTF he is talking about. I've been pulled over by the cops, too.
Granted it's been 18 years since the last time I was pulled over, but still......
"Granted it's been 18 years since the last time I was pulled over, but still......"
Dude, I think that's the point. Most of my black friends get pulled over multiple times a year for all sorts of stupid "reasons."
Maybe for all sorts of laws that the stupid black friends you have, are breaking.
But no, it's because the white cop sees a black person driving a car and asks himself: "what can I, a terrible racist" pull over this random black person for?
Yea, definitely it.
"Maybe for all sorts of laws that the stupid black friends you have, are breaking."
You know this how?
"But no, it's because the white cop sees a black person driving a car and asks himself: "what can I, a terrible racist" pull over this random black person for?"
There's a fine line between "black people never get stopped for good reasons" and "black people are never stopped for no or bad reasons." I also think it's pretty stupid to think that a cop, or anyone else, can't be racist unless they have an absurdly cartoonish thought process. And who said the cop had to be white?
So we're punishing and/or harassing people for what other people do? That doesn't sound like justice to me.
Didja hear that wooshing sound?
Having been treated exactly that way myself I can safely say that I can think of a few things that might be more soul crushing.
Recognize that just because you feel some pain or anguish, doesn't mean that necessarily offers you any insight into the validity of other people's pain or anguish. Recognize that insofar as I don't know what it means to be you, that you similarly don't know what it means to be me either. Staring at the world through your own narrow window is the condition of everyone alive, your own subjective pain and anguish does not offer any way around that fact.
I get paid 98 bucks every hour for work at home on my laptop. I never thought I'd be able to do it but my good friend is earning 17k /monthly by doing this job and she showed me how. Try it out on following website....

"(There are only two African Americans in the Senate?Scott and Democrat Corey Booker.)"
Wrong, there is only *one* African American Senator - Corey Booker - and one Uncle Tom sellout.
/prog
Incidentally, I was intrigued to discover that from the time former slaves got the vote in Reconstruction, many Democrats tried to persuade them to vote Democrat. The idea was to induce the ex-slaves to vote for "the people who knew them best" - their former masters - rather than those Republican carpetbaggers, scalawags and hypocrites.
At the time, the ex-slaves didn't buy it, precisely *because* they knew their former masters very well indeed.
So the Democrats used their paramilitaries - like the KKK - to suppress the black vote and then to pass disenfranchisement laws.
And even while doing this disenfranchisement in the South, they tried to get black votes in the North, and actually began picking up black votes during the New Deal.
And Goldwater voting against the Civil Rights Act, and the Republicans pursuing a Southern Strategy, gave the Dems the opening to pursue a total lock on the black vote.
But the underlying rationale is the same - keeping black voters on the plantation, and being willing to stab them in the back at the first opportunity.
He got pulled over 7 times, because he was breaking the law at least 7 times.
Why is this an article? Who is this Slade idiot and why is she posting liberal feel-good, whites are racists, trash on reason.com?
He got pulled over 7 times, because he was breaking the law at least 7 times.
You were there every time? Because I don't know how else you could know this.
I'm an immigrant and naturalized and have an accent, so many people still assume that I'm "just visiting". People also make all sorts of assumptions about me based on where I'm from, many of them wrong in my case, but statistically true of my former countrymen. I couldn't pass as a US Senator or as a member of the East Coast elite or a national baseball star either. But I guess I just lack the constituency to turn this into a Congressional matter or a political cause.
Here's my suggestion to Tim Scott: grow a pair and learn to live with the fact that people make assumptions about you based on your appearance; that's what the rest of humanity does. Bonus points if you treat such missteps on the part of others with graciousness and humor. If you choose to be perpetually aggrieved about it, you'll simply die early from a heart attack. Your choice.
Maybe this is his "I am not an Uncle Tom" speech.
So if you're not totally ok with people judging you and violating your rights because of the color of your skin, you're a perpetually aggrieved pussy?
I don't do the whole sympathy thing, but I'm interested to hear what solutions he proposes. Since they ordinarily just boil down to "give money to Democrats", we might actually hear something that isn't total bullshit con artistry for once. I mean, probably it will just be "give money to Republicans", but you never know.
"Was I speeding sometimes? Sure," said Scott. "But the vast majority of the time, I was pulled over for nothing more than driving a new car in the wrong neighborhood or some other reason just as trivial."
Speeding and not wearing his seatbelt.
The stats don't stupport his contention, sorry, don't believe him.
