White people love Michael Strahan because he makes Wayne Brady look like Bryant Gumbel.

As a Giants fan, seeing Michael Strahan on vapid morning shows aimed at bored housewives embarrasses me. You think LT would ever do that shit in between coke binges with teenaged hookers? Hell no.

    2. WTF   9 years ago

But they were, all of them, deceived, for another Ring was made. In the land of Brussels, in the fires of Bureaucracy, the Dark Lords forged in secret a master Ring, to control all others. And into this Ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. "One Ring to rule them all." One by one, the Free Lands of Europe fell to the power of the Ring. But there were some who resisted. A Last Alliance of Free Britons voted against the powers of Brussels and on the banks of the English Channel, they fought for the freedom of Britain. Victory was near. But the power of the Ring could not be undone."

      1. Tonio   9 years ago

Very good. But the alliance of free Britons is already cracking with the Scots wanting to stay under the rule of the DLB.

            1. WTF   9 years ago

              2. Eternal Blue Sky   9 years ago

True, but linguistically Gaelic has some interesting distinctions from mainland Celtic that separates the two on a linguistic level. Mainly, in that Gaelic has completely different sentence structures.

          2. Stormy Dragon   9 years ago

Britons are also celts. The English aren't Britons though, they're Germanic

            1. Stormy Dragon   9 years ago

Carryover from the other thread, that weird German family were technically Stuarts too, just distaff cousins.

The winter queen was the daughter of James V (or James I in England) and Sophie was her daughter.

        1. robc   9 years ago

          James VI

        2. robc   9 years ago

And looking it up, the "rightful" Jacobite King of Scotland would be Franz, Duke of Bavaria, so they would still be stuck with a weird german family.

        1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

They just need to find some norse bastards.

I don't mean the scandanavian ulta-betas they've got now, but either someone able to go a viking or someone who could follow in William the Bastard's footsteps.

          1. WTF   9 years ago

Those Norse bastards left Scandinavia long ago for other places.

            1. Eternal Blue Sky   9 years ago

So they need Hebridean champions?? The Hebrides is populated by Norse-Gaels descended from viking raiders and conquerors who led to the Brittish Isles by Ivar the Boneless, son of Ragnarr Lodbrok. The Hebrides voted to stay in the EU. And the Hebrides is on the Western Seaboard of Scotland so the EU's "Norse bastards" wouldn't even need to cross the channel to get to Britain. The Hebrideans seem the perfect candidates for a crack squad of pro-EU Norse Bastards.

'Super racist' pool safety poster prompts Red Cross apology

Not only were the poster's designers not hitting the mark, Sawyer thought, they had created an image that was racist. Sawyer complained to a lifeguard at the first facility and penned a letter to management asking for the poster's removal, she told KUSA.

After seeing the poster a second time, she posted an image of it online.

"I felt really angry," she said.

The poster ? titled "Be Cool, Follow The Rules" ? depicts various children playing at the pool. But white children are labeled as behaving in a "cool" way while children of color who are depicted defying pool rules are labeled "not cool."

    1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

Woman's violin confiscated after neighbours complain about 'strangled cat' noises

Tsige-Jahna Simmons received a noise abatement notice by Shepway District Council in February this year after a string of complaints from neighbours in Folkestone, Kent.

She was told that if she didn't stop playing her violin and strumming her guitar she'd be taken to court.

Ms Simmons ignored the noise notice, so neighbours reported her again.

Noise pollution officers visited her flat and monitored the sound ? finding they could hear it from a car park more than 200ft away, day and night.

Officers seized her violin, guitar, stereo, flatscreen TV and various speakers after she failed to respond to calls and letters.

    1. Free Market Socialist $park?   9 years ago

"Oh of course," Durham responded. "You know, you look like a queer."

"Well, OK," Allen responded. "So now you're calling me a queer in the courtroom."

"I didn't call you one," the judge said. "I said you looked like one."

Later, Allen said that the next time he is in court, "I'll pull it out and jack on you."

"OK," Durham responded. "Why don't you do that right now."

Later in the exchange, Allen told Durham "you're a real, real nasty-ass judge."

Durham agreed. "I am indeed," he said, "and you're going to find out how nasty I really am."

CIA arms destined for Syrian moderates 'get stolen, emerge on black market'

Following the delivery to Jordan, the CIA used General Intelligence Directorate officers to transport the weapons to the Syrian rebels where they disappeared midway.

Jordanian officials told the publications that the theft was apparently perpetrated by officers with direct access to cargo, who "regularly siphoned truckloads" of the weapons while still delivering some to designated drop-offs.

The stolen weapons were then sold on the black market in Jordan at bazaars in Ma'an, Sahab, and in the Jordan Valley. Those involved in the theft scheme, worth millions of dollars, used the profits to purchase expensive SUVs, electronics, and other luxury goods.

It is also believed that some of the stolen weapons were used to kill two Americans and three others at a police training facility shooting in Amman in November.

Posner: The Constitution Is Just a Goddamn Piece of Paper

And on another note about academia and practical law, I see absolutely no value to a judge of spending decades, years, months, weeks, day, hours, minutes, or seconds studying the Constitution, the history of its enactment, its amendments, and its implementation (across the centuries?well, just a little more than two centuries, and of course less for many of the amendments). Eighteenth-century guys, however smart, could not foresee the culture, technology, etc., of the 21st century. Which means that the original Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the post?Civil War amendments (including the 14th), do not speak to today. David Strauss is right: The Supreme Court treats the Constitution like it is authorizing the court to create a common law of constitutional law, based on current concerns, not what those 18th-century guys were worrying about.

In short, let's not let the dead bury the living.

Oaths sworn to uphold our nation's highest law are just so old hat.

    1. John   9 years ago

I used to really like Posner but he has really turned into a horrible judge. You can sum up the entire quoted paragraph into the single phrase "the constitution means whatever we judges decide it means." How someone of Posner's obvious intellect could be so drunk with power and lack humility to such a degree they could endorse such an idea is beyond me.

In the end, the Constitution is nothing but a law. I would love to ask Posner why this logic doesn't apply to every other law in the land, such that they only mean what judges say they mean not what drafters and legislatures meant them to mean. Then I would like to hear how Posner squares that contention with any reasonable commitment to the rule of law rather than the rule of man.

      1. VG Zaytsev   9 years ago

Maybe he saying regretfully and not exuberantly. Because, let's be honest, at this point the words in the constitution don't mean dick in US courts. The word constitution in judicial rulings could just as easily be replaced with FYTW.

        1. John   9 years ago

That is a good point. I hadn't thought of that. I need to read the whole article. Maybe he means it as a bad thing and a comment on the way things are not the way things should be.

He is not doing that. Read the whole piece.

      2. Suthenboy   9 years ago

That is the heart of it John. It's the Top Men fallacy, believing themselves to be eminently qualified to rule by decree. They either reject or do not understand the premise underlying the Constitution; No man is qualified to rule by decree and so power must be limited. Rule of man, having philosopher kings, is the foundational principle of progressivism. It has always worked out well in the past, right?

It is an astoundingly ignorant position.

        1. Cyto   9 years ago

You guys just don't understand the law.

At least that's what I'm told by lawyers I know. They live in that world so much that they actually come to think in the manner of "what is the case law" and "settled law" instead of "what does the English language on the page say?"

When I voice my concerns about things like the exceptions to free speech (obscenity, really?) they don't even seem to know what I'm talking about. I'll say "Shall make no law" is pretty clear, and I don't see any subordinate clause reading "except if it is really important." The response is always incredulous eyerolling.... the law doesn't work that way.

      3. Free Society   9 years ago

Posner fall into the same failure as most establishment types.

He thinks that the magic of government is in regulating things, and since we have things now that the Founders didn't, their Constitution doesn't work any more.

But he's dead wrong. The Constitution, and government generally, isn't about things. Its about people. And people haven't changed. So the Constitution is just as applicable and relevant today as it was when adopted. Underneath it all, they are so narcissistic and arrogant that they believe they are smarter, more moral, just better, than people have ever been. That's why they hate the Constitution - they believe it was written for lesser beings and they shouldn't be subject to it.

I help innocent people get off terrorism watch lists. As a gun control tool, they're useless.

Along with my students and colleagues in CLEAR, we have represented scores of clients placed by federal agents on the government's secretive No Fly List and its Selectee List. The largest of the lists is the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment, or TIDE. It reportedly contains 1.5 million names, only 1 percent of which ? about 15,000 people ? are U.S. residents. That mother lode contains a number of sub-lists, including the notorious No Fly List, which contained only 16 names on Sept. 11, 2001, but has now grown to 81,000. People are supposedly put on the list based on a "reasonable suspicion" that they are known or suspected of somehow being connected to terrorism.

In America, "reasonable suspicion" is the low standard by which your rights are trampled if you have the misfortune of not being white or privileged. It is based on reasonable suspicion, for example, that poor black and Latino youths in New York City are stopped and frisked by police in their own neighborhoods. And it is based on reasonable suspicion that Muslims get thrown on terrorist watch lists.

      Did you see this?

FBI Checks Wrong Box, Places Student on No-Fly List

The decision makes Ibrahim, 48, the first person to successfully challenge placement on a government watch list. Much of the federal court trial, in which the woman sought only to clear her name, was conducted in secret after U.S. officials repeatedly invoked the state secrets privilege and sought to have the case dismissed. Attorneys working pro bono spent as much as $300,000 litigating the case and $3.8 million in attorney's fees.

I think the larger point was the left's rejoinder to complaints about using the no-fly list as an obvious and simple gun-control measure. Folks worried aloud that people can be placed on the no-fly list for any sort of reason, or by mistake....

The response was, there are methods for dealing with that....

So this story tells us that getting off of the no-fly list would run you about $4 million bucks, if the government didn't just say "oops, sorry" and take you off the list for the asking.

          But yea, no undue burden....

      1. Eternal Blue Sky   9 years ago

Nah. In this case I support talking like the Left.

If you attack them for this being unconstitutional, against due process, or anything like THAT, you'll get nowhere.

If you use the words "If you guys are supposed to be liberal, why are you all demanding that we use a list full of brown people to strip those brown people of their rights??" THAT (in my experience) seems to actually strike a nerve with them.

The Left will ignore anything that they don't care about. They don't care about due process or anything like that. You have to fight the Left like the martial art of Baguazhang, the only thing that seems to work is to turn their own momentum against them.

Use the Left's own rhetoric and point out that the standard of "No Fly, No Buy" will disproportionately affect brown people, and then you have a chance at getting them to think past the catchy slogan.

Point out that the Left's proposed policy is, by their own definition at least, institutional racism, and they may just drop it. Crafting an expert defense of why due process is necessary just isn't as effective against someone on the Left as tying that person to racism is. If we take advantage of their aversion to racism, we can win.

        1. Free Society   9 years ago

If you use the words "If you guys are supposed to be liberal, why are you all demanding that we use a list full of brown people to strip those brown people of their rights??" THAT (in my experience) seems to actually strike a nerve with them.

Ah yes. The Robby Soave method of ceding all intellectual and moral ground to the enemy in the hopes that they'll see the folly of their ways and cede it right back to you. All you're doing is validating their premises, premises so low that they deserve only mockery.

Point out that the Left's proposed policy is, by their own definition at least, institutional racism, and they may just drop it.

You credit them with a modicum of desire for consistency. A grave error. Their definition of racism is constantly adapting to meet their political needs. This line of reasoning certainly has not made the left cry out against the injustice of Affirmative Action or any other form of racial discrimination that helps purported victim groups at the expense of purported victimizers.

State officials addicted to nicotine taxes

But this line in the initiative suggests the anti-vaping craze is mainly about the money: "Tobacco products also shall include electronic cigarettes." To be clear, the liquid that is heated and "vaped" is not tobacco, even though most ? but not all ? liquids contain nicotine. The nicotine is the point. Smokers are addicted to it. These products provide a safer way to get that fix ? 95 percent safer, according to Public Health England. If the initiative passes, the state will have another way to get its fix of taxes. In fact, the measure would boost taxes on vaping products by 320 percent, according to industry estimates.

The Legislative Analyst's Office explains the $1 billion a year in expected new revenues will go to replace lost tobacco-related revenues. A small portion will go to the Board of Equalization to administer the tax. Law enforcement will grab $48 million. The University of California will grab $40 million for "physician training." The Department of Public Health will get a $30-million cut and the state auditor will get some money to conduct audits.

I doubt anyone will be shocked to learn that Wayne Allan Root is a huge Trump supporter. I tuned into some talk show on the highway somewhere and the host and he were talking about how they could help get Trump elected.

Root claimed to be one of Trump's earliest, most vocal supporters. Unfortunately for him, no one seems to care to listen. It was then that I realized that Gary Johnson is the sort of man who turned to the LP to throw away his political career, but Root is the sad sort of man who saw it as a stepping stone up. And failed in using that way.

He ran for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination in the 2008 election. He finished third at the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, endorsing Bob Barr, who went on to the party's presidential nomination. Root then became the Libertarian Party vice presidential nominee. He was elected to the Libertarian National Committee as an At-Large Member in 2010 and re-elected in 2012. In September of that year, he left the Libertarian Party, re-joined the Republican Party and endorsed Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election. After 3 Deaths, Ikea Recalls Millions of Dangerous Dressers

The furniture giant said Monday that after the three deaths of three children it is no longer selling its "Malm" series products because they "could be a danger," Ikea USA president Lars Peterson told NBC News.

"Please take them out of the room," Peterson said, adding that customers are eligible for a free repair kit to anchor the furniture to a wall. Refunds will also be offered.

The announcement comes after an anchor campaign last year ? and amid staggering statistics: every 24 minutes, a child is sent to the emergency room by a falling piece of furniture or a television, according the federal government's watchdog agency, the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Every two weeks, a child dies.

The FDA told the DEA whether pot is medicine ? but it won't tell the public

Asked recently for an update, DEA spokesperson Rusty Payne told VICE News, "We don't have a timeline on the decision."

The attorney general and DEA have the final say on rescheduling, but the FDA offered its official stance on the issue at least eight months ago, according to the agencies' joint letter to members Congress, which said the DEA received the FDA's input sometime prior to September 30, 2015. Neither agency, however, is currently willing to reveal what the FDA thinks ought to happen.

The FDA also rejected a public records request from VICE News for documents related to the matter, citing the DEA's pending decision and a provision that allows federal agencies to withhold certain "intra-agency memoranda." The broad and oft-used exemption the FDA cited in its decision is commonly known as the "withhold it because you can clause." It previously allowed such records to be kept secret forever, but Congress just passed a reform that forces disclosure within 25 years.

    1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

If the FDA said "Pot has no medicinal value" I don't think the DEA would hide it. The FDA must have been less hardline prohibitionist in its stance, probably with a massive pile of weasel words.

E-cigarettes could be toxic to the mouth: Vaping 'kills cells in the oral cavity - raising the risk of disease'

Researchers found e-cigarettes contain toxic substances and nanoparticles that could kill the top layer of skin cells in the oral cavity - behind teeth and gums.

Scientists from UCLA, who was conducted the investigations on cultured cells, believe the same results could happen in a human study - increasing people's risk of oral disease including cancer.

The latest findings add to a growing body of evidence linking the stop-smoking aids to health risks.

Just yesterday, researchers in North Carolina reported using the devices increases the risk of infection because it damages hundreds of genes in the immune system.

    I'm convinced.

Democrat Platform Writers Rebuff Sanders's Israeli 'Occupation' Language

The Democratic Platform Drafting Committee voted against an amendment that would have condemned Israeli "occupation and illegal settlements" and legitimized the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement Friday.

In an 8-5 vote, the pro-Clinton majority rejected the amendment, which Bernie Sanders himself helped write.

"Language about just a two-state solution doesn't quite go to the point," said pro-Palestinian activist and president of the Arab American Institute James Zogby in his introduction for the revisions. "The reality is that Palestinians are living under occupation."

Zogby, a Sanders appointee, categorically rejected debate over the term "occupation" and reiterated an argument he made in favor of the phrase during a committee meeting in early June.

"The term occupation shouldn't be controversial," he said. "There is an occupation. It denies people freedom. Our president has said that."

DUI Suspect Drives With Body Lodged in Car for a Mile After Hit-And-Run

Esteysi Sanchez Izazaga, 29, drove her car onto the sidewalk and hit the victim at random. The man's leg detached from his body and flew through the back window, landing on the trunk of the car, police said. Izazaga continued driving for about a mile, police said, eventually parking her car in a neighborhood cul-de-sac and walking away.

Hillary Clinton Blames 'Certain Corners Of The Internet' For Eroding Her Trustworthiness Ratings

Clinton said she was troubled by polling numbers which show that voters didn't trust her, and she put the blame on political opponents and conspiracy theories about her.

"I could say that political opponents and conspiracy theorists have accused me of every crime in the book over the years," she added. "None of it's true, never has been."

Clinton grew reflective, admitting that she had "work to do" to convince voters that she was trustworthy.

"You know, you hear 25 years worth of wild accusations, anyone would start to wonder," she said. "And it is certainly true that I've made mistakes. I don't know anyone who hasn't. So I understand why people have questions."

    Behold:

The democratic principle of "one person, one vote" is fundamentally flawed. The way Baby Boomers and beyond are voting the world over is evidence that old solutions often aren't adept at tackling new problems. Old people keep gutting the future of young people. And it has to stop.....
The young, by contrast, are burdened with ballooning costs of university tuition, exorbitant house prices, pathetically underfunded internship programs, and a job market that is continually eradicating full-time work......
When young people talk about intergenerational injustice, we're often accused of complaining about the situation without offering solutions. So here's my solution: To ensure the youth aren't shafted, a citizen's vote should be proportionate to their age.

    Bold take.

    1. Idle Hands   9 years ago

We'll call it like the 3/5ths compromise or something as old people will only get 3/5's of a vote, that way they almost count as a full person but not really. I have a better idea let's have a proportional vote based on how much said voters agree with my positions.

    2. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

I'll go for a taxpayer's vote. Your vote is proportional to the net amount of money you contribute to funding the government.

      1. WTF   9 years ago

Yup, that would actually be fair. Net tax recipients would not get a vote because they have no personal skin in the game, so they couldn't vote themselves more goodies at the expense of others. This is actually closer to what the Founders envisioned.

        1. Hamster of Doom   9 years ago

          I'm down for a skin-in-the-game vote.

No skin in the game? No vote. Not your business? No vote.

You're either part of the problem, or part of the solution, or it's not your damned business and no one cares what you think, nor should they.

        2. R C Dean   9 years ago

Net tax recipients would not get a vote

I would go with their votes subtract real votes from the candidate they vote for.

An N.Y.U. Study Gone Wrong, and a Top Researcher Dismissed

New York University's medical school has quietly shut down eight studies at its prominent psychiatric research center and parted ways with a top researcher after discovering a series of violations in a study of an experimental, mind-altering drug.

A subsequent federal investigation found lax oversight of study participants, most of whom had serious mental issues. The Food and Drug Administration investigators also found that records had been falsified and researchers had failed to keep accurate case histories.

In one of the shuttered studies, people with a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress caused by childhood abuse took a relatively untested drug intended to mimic the effects of marijuana, to see if it relieved symptoms.

    1. John   9 years ago

Why not just give them marijuana?

Official: Why did you do it?
Researcher: I did it for MANKIND! Can't you see?
      Official: But we have rules.
Researcher: They were cramping my style. My genius is above your petty *rules*.
      Official: Okay, that's enough.
Researcher: No, not my Mind Shifting Incubator! Not MY MSI! You'll seeI I shall get my revenge!
      Official: What's this?
Researcher (whisks it from his hands): NEVER MIND!

Cuomo and Billy Joel Ride for Breast Cancer Awareness

They were not exactly the Hells Angels pulling in, with a coterie of State Police, and other official vehicles escorting them from a park on Long Island and commandeering a highway lane to keep the pair safe

I am sure that made the Long Island commute even more fun!

Mr. Joel, who was riding with a friend, headed back to Long Island, leaving Mr. Cuomo to continue the ride on Monday to appearances at Bear Mountain State Park and New Paltz, N.Y., in Ulster County. Mr. Cuomo is scheduled to resume the bike tour on two dates this month, crossing the state and finishing in Buffalo.

If all the people that are having to hold their noses to vote this November for Hillary or Trump would collectively vote for Gary Johnson, then he would win by a landslide. If the they voted a straight Libertarian ticket America win by a landslide. This country needs and deserves term limits but the jackals in Washington aren't about to give up there power. Well over 50% of the people want pot legalized. Have you seen any bills for it. Over 50% of Americans want mass surveillance stopped. The only bills you see is to increase it. They pretend you have a choice on election day but the same lobbyists have bought both candidates. On social issues the Republicans are so far out in left field that they can no longer see home plate. The Democrats want to regulate the size of your turds for your own good of course. Time to wake up citizens. Stop letting others think for you.

Three years ago, I posted about the abduction/disappearance of Jessica Heeringa.

They may have caught the guy who did it:

Co-workers: Willis frequented Jessica Heeringa's workplace

Willis is behind bars without bond after being charged with two other crimes in Muskegon County.

He was charged Wednesday with open murder and felony firearm in the June 2014 murder of Rebekah Bletsch, 36. She was shot three times in the head along Automobile Road in Dalton Township, where she often jogged.

Last week, Wills was charged with felony kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon and felony firearm in connection to an abduction in Fruitland Township in April of this year. The teen involved in that incident was able to escape by jumping out of a moving vehicle and then running away. A probable cause hearing in the case is set for Thursday.

    Good lord:

A young TV model was brutally murdered in front of her family as she desperately tried to hide from killers who broke into her home.
Karla Garcia was in the kitchen when she heard the criminals enter the house.
While trying to hide from the invaders, Karla, 23, was shot in the head and died from her injuries.
The killers fled the scene in a black Cadillac and according to reports paramedics, who arrived shortly afterwards were greeted by her screaming mother.
Police rushed to the area after reports of gunfire but the killers had already fled the building on the crossroads between Concordia and Constitucion streets in the La Hacienda neighbourhood of the city of Apodaca, near the city of Monterrey in north-eastern Mexico's State of Nueva Leon.

    1. John   9 years ago

Those common sense gun control measures are really doing some good for Mexico. Possessing a gun in Mexico is an automatic two year sentence. Her family had to stand back and watch their daughter die because the government of Mexico has made it illegal for them to be able to defend themselves.

Food Labs talks tacos al pastor.

Here's one thing to remember: cooking on a vertical spit may look like a fast cooking method? The outer layers of meat are searing and crisping after all, right??but in reality, it's a two-stage slow-then-fast cooking process. While the taquero is busy slicing off the exterior layers of the trompo, the layers within are still slow-cooking, causing the meat to break down and tenderize. This is, in conjunction with thin slicing and curing, are why even a tough cut like shoulder can come out tender and juicy when cooked. It's only after the inner layers of meat are exposed that they fast-cook.

So why not just separate the two phases of cooking? I returned to a method I employed when making Greek-American Lamb Gyros: pack the meat into a loaf pan before cooking. By then slow-roasting it in the oven (or on the cool side of a grill), I could get the meat as tender as I liked it before slicing it and finishing it off under the broiler or in a skillet.

    1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

Because watching the preparer slice the pieces off the vertical spit is part of the experience being purchased for ?1.52
