Cleveland celebrates the city's first sports championship since 1964.
Not the letdown they deserve.
I'm surprised these idiots weren't let down a dozen or so stories.
That reminds me of a movie.
Nah. Plenty of footholds and handholds on those ugly-ass parking garages. Looks much scarier from a long shot from a helicopter than it does from the ground.
Parkour!
Hello.
And Bernie Kosar can finally relax.
Earnest Byner can relax a little.
Jose Mesa says "Gracias"
Vegas gets NHL expansion team.
That is tough, that team would be playing 84 road games a season.
82.
But point noted.
OK, totally missed point. Explanation?
Guten Abend.
Even at LGBT Pride, people are questioning the Divine inspiration of government solutions.
Here's the thing with that - up until very recently the police were the enemies of gay people - bullshit entrapment for soliciting, gay bar raids, etc. While the politicians have made them play all nicey-nice with the homos, that could change in an instance. Also, I could never understand the police fetish that a lot of older gay men had.
I don't get it either, but it seems to be common enough among straight people too. Though probably less publicly.
Check out Ilsa, she-wolf of the SS. Some people have weird fetishes. NTTAWT.
One of the finest motion pictures ever projected on the silver screen. Ilsa is a masterpiece of historical fiction.
I'm guten-free, Abed.
Polish boys for everyone!
You want them to polish your knob?
So is that "Polish" as in from Poland, ore "polish" as in shoe polish?
The Polish Boy is a sausage sandwich native to Cleveland, Ohio. It consists of a link of kielbasa placed in a bun, and covered with a layer of french fries, a layer of barbecue sauce or hot sauce, and a layer of coleslaw.
Get some culture.
Oh. I thought it was some variation on "rent boy".
And you still haven't answered my question.
Disgusting.
.... sandwich native to Cleveland
....Get some culture
He meant polish as in pole-ish. He likes them anorexic.
Narrow Gays?
If I wasn't basically burnt to a crisp and thus feeling a bit off, I so would be having a Polish boy now.
That was one long ass parade.
I watched it from the comfort of my family room with iced lemonade, popcorn and a clean bathroom. How were your 1,299,999 closest friends?
It was good to see how people were enjoying being together, celebrating. But don't worry they'll be giving each other the one finger salute again tomorrow.
Not even true. Stipe got Cleveland a championship a while back.
A sit-in... AGAINST civil rights, not for rights.
Let's call it a sh!t-in instead of a sit-in.
Hence former civil rights leader.
All sitting around dumb as posts waiting for a woodchipper gun control bill.
The update at the bottom is the real kicker:
Joe Perticone
@JoePerticone
In a gaggle of 30 reporters, every reporter asked about how "historic" the sit in was.
This is the reason why Democrats never have to buy shoe polish.
The media always licks Democrats' boots clean.
Polish as in from Poland or polish as in something to make something shiny?? Apparently today we aren't just using context to figure it out.
they misspelled histrionic
Thread winner!
All the reporters worked for NPR?
Which will, I predict, be used against poor non-white people most.
Donald Trump is trying to get back on message, calling Hillary Clinton a "world-class liar."
The Hillary takedown. It's the one saving grace of a Trump candidacy.
That and watching progressives foam at the mouth about someone who is in many ways one of them.
They'll scream until they're orange in the face.
Oh, bravo, sir. Rather well done, quite.
*polite applause*
Regarding Noor Salman (wife of Omar Mateen) going missing. It's worse than I thought. Apparently she's been missing for five days, and the only thing that changed today us that AG Loretta Lynch admitted that Salman was missing.
And yet congress is engaging in juvenile theatrics instead of subpoenaing administration officials and grilling them.
What a coincidence. My guns just went missing. All of them. I just can't seem to find them anywhere.
Yes, i lost all mine a long time ago. But if did have any I would certainly follow whatever unconstitutional laws they might come up with.
Holy Saint Elmo's Ghost, my guns are all. missing. TOO!
It's such a shame, because I was planning on turning them in to the government this very weekend. Ho-hum. I suppose I will have to make other plans.
*googles list of local gun shows*
Damn, ain't that a bitch? I know I went out hunting, and whoops accidentally dropped all my guns in a lake. Call me Mr. Butterfingers.
"*googles list of local gun shows*"
Dude, just go get new guns from federal agents trying to set up narcotics stings like everyone else.
Now, fellas. You should probably not lose one or two so you have some "throw-down" (or "throw-away") guns to placate the jackboots when they go door-to-door.
I'm just gonna start giving up names of local politicians who I'm pretty sure are all holding.
To be fair, subpoenaing administration officials and grilling them is juvenile theatrics, too.
Point grudgingly conceded. Harumph!
I have to admit that I think the only people Congress should be allowed to subpoena are those in the various branches of government. It's just that when such people do testify before Congress, it's still juvenile grandstanding.
I do not support grilling admimistration officials. You would never get the smell out of your grill.
Is there any marinade/rub that makes that taste good?
I hear tar and feathers is the traditional recipe.
Tar is boiled, not grilled.
Usually not. The traditional tar was pine tar, liquid at room temperature.
Waaaaa? Really? Citation requested.
C'mon, learn to google.
Tarring and feathering was often presented in literature humorously as a punishment inflicting public humiliation and discomfort, but not serious injury. This would be hard to understand if the tar used were the material now most commonly referred to as "tar", which has a high melting point and would cause serious burns to the skin. However, the "tar" used then was pine tar, a completely different substance, with a much lower melting point. Some varieties were liquid at room temperature.
They can't keep track of a potential accomplice and/or witness.
But... they will keep track of guns.
Well, no, they can't do that either, remember ?
We're talking professional politicians, here. The intelligent ones are venal and corrupt. The majority of them are high functioning people suffering from Antisocial Behavioral Disorder or Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and have poor impulse control and a propensity for juvenile theatrics. So this behavior is inevitable.
The Feds have her. She knew that the FBI was egging him on. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST. (Unless it turns out not to be true. Then you heard it somewhere else.)
Even before anyone posted it here, one of my early thoughts was that this was another FBI setup that didn't go as planned. But thanks to whoever used the term "catch and release," that was excellent.
Catch and release enables other FBI agents to enjoy our natural resources.
I do like the conspiracy theory that the administration is making sure she goes missing, because her testimony would be way too embarrassing to the FBI.
[passes tinfoil to MJG]
How long before they find hear dead from a "self-inflicted" gunshot?
They'll find her and start an interview, at which point she will charge at FBI agents, forcing them to shoot her to death. Like that accomplice to the Tsarnaev brothers.
There will only be a single agent in the room, regardless of official policy.
MJG, pass the foil to Fist when you're done, please.
I, uh... I had half a sandwich leftover from lunch, so...
Multiple self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head.
I'm pretty sure the Justice Department is just trolling at this point. Between this and the whole redaction incident, there's no other logical explanation.
Unless they truly are that incompetently clueless.
Shriek informed me that the redactions and edited transcript were just wingbagger teanut idiocy.
Don't you feel good about being so well informed?
Congress is pulling the I'm going to hold my breath until I get ice cream trick. Let's see how it pays off for them.
I said it earlier, but I wouldn't mind the whole security theater so much if they actually caught the bad guys every once in a while. I wouldn't be thrilled about it, but at least they get results.
Instead we just have this fucked up Orwellian state where the feds know what books you've read and how long you spend on the phone with your friends, but when it comes to an actual accomplice to a terrorist act, they can't be bothered to keep track of her.
""demanding unspecificed gun control legislation.""
What do we want ! ""UNSPECIFIED!""
When do we want it! ""EVENTUALLY!""
"We will not rest until the idea of guns are thoroughly explained to us, and we become convinced that guns CANNOT kill people independent of human beings."
relevant
"What do we want?" "Fry's dog!"
"When do we want it?" "Fry's dog!"
"demanding unspecificed gun control legislation."
So... How is this different than any other time?
House Democrats, led by former civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (Ga.) are holding a sit-in in Congress demanding unspecificed gun control legislation.
A sit-in? This would be the House version of stomping your feet?
Careful, congresscritters, most of us (here) are actually happy when you do nothing.
Well don't tell them!!
Hold it, men, they're not bluffing!
Former rival presidential candidate and fellow senator Ted Cruz said he's "glad" to endorse him.
Thanks but no thanks.
House Democrats, led by former civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (Ga.) are holding a sit-in in Congress demanding unspecificed gun control legislation.
Well, i hope, as in Lewis's Civil Rights days, some cops showed up and kicked some skulls.
He's in the house and demanding gun control.
Should he demand that the Sergeant-at-Arms now be called Sergeant-Who's-Disarmed?
Different rules apply to them (ch. 1,987,238).
Hmm...
And lest there be any confusion, that comment was merely juvenile bluster and hyperbole and in no way intended to represent a true threat. Should be obvious, but i know the subtleties of language can sometimes be lost on self-important government officials.
What happened to the Gang (Bang) of 8?
Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert reported to prison today for a 15-month sentence related to paying hush money to victims he molested.
OBJECTION! Molestation was not the crime he was convicted of.
Objection overruled. He didn't say Hastert was going to prison for molestation, but rather for paying hush money.
OBJECTION! Buggering the witness. Supposing facts not in evidence. That hush money could have been for any number of penis-related things.
You're out of line, FoE. One more outburst like that and I'll have you hauled into Warty's basement for contempt.
You're out of order! This whole trial is out of order!
The vending machine in the lobby is out of order!
Are we sure it was molestation, and not some legitimate coaching?
Maybe Hastert was teaching him how to do the Saturday Night Ride. It's possible that Hastert's enthusiasm in sharing his knowledge so dominated his mind that he failed to notice that he was naked at the time.
It presents "victims he molested" as a fact. Unless he confessed to that, I think it needs an "allegedly".
Do you know else was a gun owner on an FBI watch list?
MLK. (Love you Iowahawk)
Niiiice.
Haha, new angle to attack the gun control measures on...
"Politicians want laws to allow them to disarm people like MLK!!"
Actually, you should try that. It also dovetails nicely with the prog narrative that 2A was included so that white slaveowners could put down slave rebellions. Seriously, they say that. Use it agin' 'em.
Wait, what? There are progs that seriously argue that?
Lee Harvey Oswald, Sir?
John Lennon of Imagine infamy?
I'll never forgive him for that song even as he sleeps six feet under.
Diane Feinstein.
You are absolutely correct.
How the fuck did she end up on a watchlist? Was she a radical back in college?
I'd be willing to bet the feds keep tabs on everyone on the Hill.
She was wiretapped by the FBI. Something related to Israel, IIRC.
Sorry, I'm confusing that with the CIA wiretap.
How could you possibly confuse the two?? EVERYONE knows that the CIA never operates within the country's borders, and the FBI never operates outside of it!! /NEVER/
More like the CIA never operates within the country's laws, and the FBI never operates outside it unless there's a really, really good reason.
^The above comment is merely adolescent snark and not to be taken as serious criticism of our fine intelligence service or national law enforcement agency.
More like Dianne Finestein, am I right?
No, I looked it up. It actually is spelled Feinstein. (Two n's in Dianne, though.)
I was saying that she was fine, as in sexy, beautiful, very attractive, and gorgeous.
What does fein mean in German?
Die, Bart, Die?
Fine.
Jewess.
Like Darth Sidious?
Exactly like that.
You're out of order!
Crusty, no. Just no. I have to draw a line here. Thou shalt not would.
Crusty is turned on by leather and the sound of a cracking pelvis.
I was saying that...
Explaining your joke instead of getting mine? So I guess it turns out Crusty is easy in more ways than one.
I got your joke, and my joke was that I was explaining my joke to you. Have a little more faith in me, Fist. I am not one of the typical uncultured hit and run miscreants.
You guys are a regular Burns and Allen. Yes, Crusty we know you're Gracie.
We are a much more masculine Garfunkel and Oates.
Cage match Garfunkle v Oates v Gracie Allen. My money is on Gracie.
John Oates, or Warren Oates?
I do not have 1/64th of the masculinity that Warren Oates possessed.
Ted Kennedy?
North Korea Considering More-Modern Approach to Science = "PEOPLE "NOT SHOT" FOR FAILURES"
Experts note = there are still many other reasons that the same people can/will be shot.
Humans grow by eating food and science flourishes amidst failures
That's . . . impressively gibberish-ish.
"Humans grow by eating food and science flourishes amidst failures"
It's probably a language thing, but how are those two things even tangentially related??
You could ask, but then you'd get shot
It's North Korea - just nod and smile.
In other words, Food is to Human Growth as Failure is to Scientific Growth.

Remember in Dr. Zhivago when they just took the house, because it was being "under-occupied"? Almost there, man.
No one needs a house with more than one room!
No one needs a house at all. No one needs anything. We can all just sit here until we die from thirst.
Sanders: Hey, that's MY idea!
No one needs more than one idea
I foresee no possible unintended consequences happening as a result of this.
"under-occupied" Jeez that's a scary thought. They already outlaw in many places how many people you can have maximum. Now they are going to put a minimum on there too. That's just all sorts of lovely.
Underoccupied houses are owned by the rich. That means well-connected, and that means ain't nuthin' gonna happen to them.
No, it means if you aren't rich, famous, connected, or something similar, you can't have a spare bedroom for guest or to use as an office, hobby room, game room, etc.
This is another one of those laws that fucks people who have just enough to be a little bit more than most but not enough more to send a big fuck you to the government.

Finally, someone with "World's Best Dad" coffee-cup that isn't a douche.
I'm not great with Russian names, but it sounds like the mom did it.
Yep, it was the mom. The AP story is very poorly written, it's easy to get confused.
The mother was a mountain lion?
No picture provided. I can't tell if she was a cougar.
Well, snatch stories are the best.

Did he have a permit for that? Is the mountain lion ok? Did it have a name?

Scott Adams of Dilbert fame says gun control cannot be solved in the USA:
http://blog.dilbert.com/post/1.....in-the-usa
excellent trolling
Except I noticed he had turned off commenting. To be fair the trumptardation was reaching dangerous levels. So far we've been pretty safe here. Though it is an infection that can spread vigorously once a vector is introduced. Meditation and exercise are probably the best inoculations.
THE LOUD ONE WITH THE SENTIENT HAIR SHALL RULE YOU ALL*
*till we take over
His comment section a few days ago had devolved into nothing but actual racists and people pretending to be actual racists trolling the hell out of everything. He's said he's turning it off until he can find an alternate comment section that can give more administrative control.
Well played, sir.
That's a ridiculously fun little article. Thanks for the share.
"Put down your gun so I can shoot you."
Isn't that, in the long run, precisely what it's all about?
If we had a real government ? the kind that works ? we would acknowledge that gun violence is not one big problem with one big solution. It is millions of people with different risk profiles voting their self-interest as they see it.
He cuts right through the typical proggy fetishizing of guns as talismans exerting a terrible will on their benighted owners. Yes, the problem is poverty. The black swan events like the many mass shooting we can name are drops in the bucket when it comes to homicides, and less still if we include suicide in the same constellation of poverty-related outcomes. We cannot prevent mass shooting events unless we embrace mass disarmament, which won't happen, and even then, as the routine atrocities in Europe demonstrate, it's no guarantee of anyone's safety.
We can, however, focus on alleviating poverty to keep urchins in the gutters from gunning one another down. We can focus on reducing violence in the black market trade by diminishing the need for black markets. The problem is, these things are largely a problem for Democrats, who adamantly refuse to address their terrible records in running the cities in which most of this violence occurs.
For Democrats, it's much more politically lucrative (in money as well as prestige) to deny any basic problem with their socioeconomic policies and blame the high rates of crime on external factors, mostly Republicans being meanies and somehow, despite holding few positions of power, exerting an outsized influenced over politics.
So Scott is wrong in one sense: gun violence does have a single, overarching problem, though he's correct in that the solution is neither easy nor probable: the problem is Democrats, and the solution is ousting them from their seats of power. Much like mass disarmament, it's just not going to happen.
I don't think it's poverty so much as opportunity.
Some people are truly lazy and want everything handed to them on a platter, toot sweet, and will likely always be criminals.
I think most people don't mind starting poor as long as they can see a path to building their experience and job skills.
That's what's wrong with minimum wage laws, occupational licensing, and so on -- they remove the opportunity, and that's what causes the real stagnation and despair and people just giving up and holding out their hand for government handouts.
That's why the indictment of Democratic policies. All of those things are planks in their economic policy. Their policies preserve and perpetuate poverty. You're right, being poor does not by itself guarantee a person resorts to crime; but maintaining that poverty and preventing escape for a good chunk of the population guarantees many people will choose it out of frustration. Opportunism only explains particular incidents, while sustained poverty explains the rationale.
Dems have a lot to answer for, but from the look of it their constituents will never bother asking.
Well said both of you.
I came here to post this. The more I read Adams, the more I realize how right he is about basically everything, which is why the world is ruled by blowhards who propound craziness while the gimlet-eyed realists retreat to Twain, Smith, and Daniels for solace.
I'm thinking that he should start an online program--let's call it Adams University--instructing people in the science of persuasion.
"while the gimlet-eyed realists retreat to Twain, Smith, and JACK Daniels for solace"
I assume that was an oversight.
Ted Cruz votes for giving FBI access to browser histories w/o warrant. Mark Levin hardest hit.
Actually, no. He'll defend it as an awesome constitutional idea.
This probably belongs over in the Brexit thread.
Ha. That looks like something John Oliver would come up with if he wasn't a moron.
Damn, maybe we should join the EU. Who doesn't want to fly like an eagle.
This is America. I want to fly like a fucking space shuttle. Even one of the ones that exploded.

Has anyone posted this yet? Quadrupling of membership!
LGBT gun rights group sees membership skyrocket after Orlando shooting
I wonder if the Facebook bump will translate to more people buying guns and materially supporting the gun rights group?
Also wonder how many of the new facebook members are actually gay, and are not just longtime gun owners/activists who have only now heard of the group and want to support it.
That trend started years ago. At least the buying guns and getting into shooting part.
I support LGBT
Good for them, for realz.
Awesome. Love it. If there is anyone that should support the 2nd Amdt, it should be the LGBT community.
Some fags wanna get their hands on some nicely oiled rods, eh?
I'm hearing that in Mr. Garrison's voice.
Makes sense. LGBT community is pretty unique in that they are the only minority that isn't born into a family full of other minorities. Gives them a lot more diversity of thought.
Nonsense. Included in whatever DNA wiring makes you attracted to the same sex is an attraction to high rates of taxation and big government programs. It's kind of like being black.

This is almost unbelievable. I am the unofficial admin of a storage system and there are hundreds of hack attempts a day. And this isn't secret stuff, no high profile characters are storing anything. The internet is just the wild west. Turning off security features is moronic.

Whelp, one more fuck up, drip drip goes the scandal. Hopefully Trump will turn up the burn at some point the same way he has on the pay to play.

I'm honestly more scared of the federal government than ISIS terrists.
As well you should be
Let me put it this way:
The feds make all sorts of promises which are obviously lies.
ISIS says it wants to kill me unless I join their brand of Islam, and I believe they are sincere in this.
Looking at the odds of a deadly encounter, I would say 1,000,000 to 1, Government over Terrorist.
The feds make all sorts of promises which are obviously lies.
Do the feds ever tell the truth?
Lightning in India killed at least 90 people.
Christ, they really do pack them in there.
Perhaps more remarkable, they were disparate strikes around the country. Mostly farmers working in their fields as the monsoons arrive, getting their planting in.
I saw the headline and thought of a huge lightning strike at a football or cricket stadium. But 90 people around the country all in one day. Wow.
Even ninety in a crowded area would... somewhat strain credulity.

Workplace violence? Yeah, a 75 mile commute will do that to you.
I first learned of the congressional sit it from........ The Sierra Club's Facebook page.
But this totally isn't about partisan politics.
I learned of it from a picture a friend an acquaintance someone I met several years ago posted of Elizabeth Warren posing with other Senators.
That I can understand.
But the Sierra Club? Did Yosemite National Park get shot in the face with an assault rifle?
You seem surprised? The Sierra Club stopped being a "conservation"-oriented org. and became 100% a partisan liberal propaganda arm.... like back in the 1990s.
(*i was mr mountain-climbing REI employee for a while back then, and they were generally seen as "allies" for the Promoting Wilderness Access crowd; but in the early 2000s they basically went 100% 'global warming' and partisan scaremongering)
Apparently they started raking in big political bucks in the late 1990s and now are nothing more than an arm of progressive politics hardly distinguishable from the SEIU or MediaMatters.
This guy's name popped up in a quick google, and he might have something to do with it =

Operation Barbarino for me.
Up your nose with a rubber hose.
In your spleen with a bottle of Mr. Clean!
Down your gizzard with a rubber lizard!
"We must be headlights, not taillights. We can't continue to stick our heads in the sand and ignore the reality of mass gun violence." ?Rep. John Lewis
The Democrats were driving the car just 7 years ago, and now they're just the taillights. How did this happen?!?!?
When did "mass gun violence" become something that presumably sentient human beings said out loud?
What does the phrase even mean? Are the guns massing against humanity in some sort of animistic conspiracy and/or disproportionately targeting faithful Catholics?
It means they've always wanted your guns and they think that this is their chance.
Oh dear, you've lit the Eddie signal.
"We must be headlights, not taillights. We can't continue to stick our heads in the sand and ignore the reality of mass gun violence." ?Rep. John Lewis
They turn the engine, but the engine doesn't turn.
John, you're a spotlight of pointless retardation.
A penlight of futility.
Did anyone get a chance to see the gun control portion of the Charlie Rose Show last night? His panel consisted of a pro-gun control writer from the Washington Post, and a really pro-gun control guy from the New Yorker who penned an article called "Making a Killing". A bunch of imperious talking heads wondering out loud why calls for gun control drive increased gun sales.
Thankfully, no.
But it's easy to imagine their confusion about why the lesser folk won't listen to them.
Didn't catch it. I must have been at the gun store.
So, a representative sample of the range of acceptable-opinion, then.
this is exactly what my friends don't understand, btw. there's a bubble-world mentality in the NYC world where this REALLY IS how people think. "A WaPo and New Yorker writer... well, who else's POV could possibly matter!?"
I suppose its not limited to NY, but its this sort of urban-liberal-middle-class provincialism that assumes "but I don't know *anyone* who owns a gun?!? Clearly no one supports this stuff". Its just a completely different POV about what the 'boundaries' of 'extreme-views' are.
And "extreme" from their POV isn't "Fox News" (*which is more of a non-entity which is simply disregarded as a mouthpiece for reactionary yokels); its more anything that dares to suggest that maybe, just maybe, they actually *don't know everything*
I'm seeing a ton of Bullshit (capital B) from a lot of my friends from college. They all live in SF, and never go out of that bubble.
Whenever black folks from the Southside of Chicago wants less gun restrictions, the white progressives in the city are baffled. Like they don't understand that many of these people don't feel safe in their neighborhoods and want have an equalizer in case some asshole wants to harm them.
And/or - they are much more intimately familiar with the reality of "how laws work" and "who they're enforced against".
They can be damn sure its not going to be some white college kid whose life is ruined for owning a gun. the bulk of the prosecutions are going to be "where the cops are", which is in *their* neighborhoods. Naturally upper-middle class white people LOVE the "idea" of laws. Because in their POV they reap all the benefits, and none of the costs.
Whereas poorer people in black neighborhoods tend to be more aware that "laws have costs"
I'll bet they're equally confused by all the "regressive" homos who now want to start carrying. They're compromising the intersectionality narrative!

The "But everybody I know voted for McGovern!" anecdote is coming up on 45 years old. This is hardly a new phenomenon. It's also the orthodox thinking of the entire Reason editorial staff and a plurality of the commentariat.
It's not about winning 30-40% of the field in a densely-populated race. It's about losing 60+% of the field while having little appeal across the aisle.
NYC is the most provincial place in the country.
So, if I understand it correctly:
There was a proposed bill that would have passed the Senate. The proposed bill would have prevented people on the terrorist watchlist from buying a gun. The Senate Democrats refused to vote for cloture on the bill BECAUSE it contained a provision to protect due process. Again, this is a bill that would have passed with bipartisan support, and the Dems killed it. No other bill was passed or could have been passed.
And now, the House Dems are having a "sit in", hashtag #disarmhate? Sorry, I mean a "historic" sit in.
Am I understanding this correctly?
But... but that would mean Democrats are exploiting a tragedy!
*hastily roots around for shocked face*
They fucked up. The bodies aren't warm anymore.
That about sums it up
It's an election year and the Democrats will do anything to avoid talking about their criminal lowlife of a candidate. So I expect more bullshit about guns, bathrooms, abortions, and every other wedge issue between now and November.
Case in point

You can't say "democraticunterground"

Today, a mob of Egyptian Muslims looted and burned the homes of 80 Christians because of a rumor that they were planning to build a church.

Was just listening to Neil deGrasse Tyson extol his high school, and by extension the New York public school system, for having graduated eight future Nobel prize winners. Now, aside from the fact that New York is the exception to every rule, you have to wonder how many future convicts, welfare dependents, or low-life grifters they graduated or failed to graduate.
There's a certain logic to his point, though. A thousand New York murderers won't affect my life much, probably, because their impact is confined to a few families apiece. But a Nobel scientist who revolutionizes some discipline may well have a considerable impact on my life. So the ratio is almost meaningless as far as net worth in human capital is concerned.
But he's making his comments as though public schooling is the only reason those Nobel prize winners achieved what they did, that only the New York system of public education could have wrought such useful material from the dross of humanity. He's praising the system, because he's a lefty, and in many ways a useful idiot of the left, because it's what's expected of high-ranking progressive personalities. In that sense, their failure-to-success rate kinda matters, since public schooling is not the only and in many was an inferior source of communal education.
Which of the highest-end magnet schools did he attend?
ah, Bronx Science.
The NYC magnet schools are as similar to the "regular NYC school system" as SEAL Team 6 is to a middle-aged-mens' paintball club.
So his argument is really a school choice or voucher argument.
Or, Get the smart kids away from the thugs.
No. His argument is 'public schools are great--but they need more money'. Neil deGrasse Tyson is a moronic planetarium tech.
If the left wasn't trying to push diversity in science no one would know who he is.
Houthi rebels in Yemen hit US-built Abrams tank from Saudi Army. It blows up real good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0nDHV_mkiY
Apparently the export version doesn't have the extra armor. An Abrams costs about $4 million. 10 Kornet rockets and a launcher cost about $1 million. So for $1 million worth of anti-tank weapons, you can destroy $40 million worth of tanks. How practical is a weapon when the countermeasure is much cheaper? ISIS destroyed 3 Iraqi Abrams tanks yesterday with similar weapons.
Fun fact: the motto of the Houthis is "god is the greatest, death to America, death to Israel, a curse upon the Jews, victory to Islam."
Shades of the Soviets in Afghanistan
What a shitty motto I only agree with one part of it.
"...God is....a curse upon the Jews...?
The Marines are pawing through junkyards to find FA-18s to fill the gap caused by the delays in the F-35.
They ought to string up the people responsible for that clusterfuck; contractors, brass, congresscritters, civil service, etc..
You forgot Congress.
What part of "congresscritters" don't you understand? :-p
NATO...
Something tells me someday they'll be pawing through junkyards of hardly-used F-35s to find mementos.
For some reason I was reminded of this.
Rather than a suave flight-jacketed young man it's some balding, paunchy slob representing the American taxpayer.
Perhaps if we weren't in so many wars the Marnies wouldn't need so many planes.
(That's what an air force is for, anyway.)
AF can't take off from a carrier.
If you are a housewife in Texas and start a Tea Party group, the IRS and FBI show up at your door. This, however, is just a fakes scandal.

Got a link for the former?
A housewife with anti-government sympathies may be using her non-profit to cheat the government out of its fair share, so she deserves extra scrutiny.
The Clinton foundation always pays its fair share. All those amended tax returns say so.
Link check, please.
scary shit.
It's amazing how many people just assume that VW did something terrible in terms of pollution. The rigged cars probably polluted less in their lifetime than a big truck does in a day.
Holy crap the comments are vicious!
It's delicious in a good way.
Gore, greens and the government seriously have to go fuck themselves. Fucking opportunistic parasites. One and all.
They were at the point where meeting the NOx standards meant reducing fuel efficiency, because higher fuel efficiency means more complete combustion of fuel, which means higher exhaust temperatures, which means more NOx created.
There are tradeoffs.
So... I can maybe pick up a new 2015 VW on the cheap?
Or less than Al Gore does with a few private jet flights to lecture us about how we should hand wash our clothes.
Eric Peters is the real deal - he has nothing but contempt for beltway "libertarians". He is not too fond of Reason's staff for that matter.
No lefty libertarians, like Reason staff, among the commenters.
"Holy crap the comments are vicious!"
*Looks at comments, first one at random:
"It all happens so fast. Germany a minute ago was the freest coolest place where you could do your thing without issue.
Now their a vermin refugee muslim hellhole up to their eteballs in backwards regs. No nukes. No IC engines. No insulting any tinpot nutbag about his saintly flying squirrel or its off to jail.
150 years ago, half the world was running around naked. Doing their , primitive thing in peace. Then those National Socialist Geopoliticians came around taking pictures. And building them buildings to learn the categoricals and the imperatives. And how to buy clothes. And processed foods.
Is it really progress if you're captured by geographic socialists and religious agencies and national military cabals and forced to civilize or die. To be the more equal pigs that wear clothes, and become literate and cultured pigs. But always swine just the same with no freedom, just a kind of softness and dependency that makes you cling to your societal Stalin roosters like the plucked chickens you've somehow become."
What the fuck did I just read??
He probably drives around with a smoker, which emits black yokel smug.
I don't know who that is but fuck him too.
It's perfectly reasonable to know about weird stuff on the internet without wanting to masturbate to it.
I guess that's one option, sure.
*knocks on door loudly*
Ah, thank you.
So were the hockey fans from San Jose and Tampa when they started, and the fans from Phoenix, Dallas, and Florida (Miami) Panthers.
Why do you have a problem with Eric Peters?
Mr. Peters would not fold like a cheap suit as Matt Welch does when he is guest of Bill Maher.
Stromboli are not sandwiches, you philistine.
The guy from Pinocchio?
And, goddamit, now I want a calzone.
Yeah, that's more of a meat pie like an empanada.
He probably thinks a Runza is a sandwich, too. I should be surprised, but Minnesota is a strange place.
Not only that, from what I have heard, the marketing plan for the team is for the tourists to see their home team.play there. They would be asking for a hostile crowd.
Tor Libertarian is the site's Agile Cyborg.
M*ry St*ck?
I know. It's an Agilistic comment.
Yeah, I'm skeptical. I was listening to their pitch and I couldn't quite grasp how hockey in the desert is gonna work; it's already struggling in Phoenix. I can't shake the feeling the marketing will be more of a more 'Celine' and 'Cirque du Soleil' attraction than hockey per se. I could be wrong. We'll see I guess.
I'm angry today.
No, presentation of prose.
Well, at least you are not so angry as to not see that.
One difference between Tor and AG is that the former is far more prolific.
Why not call it a machine gun, you NRA apologist?
/sarc
well it was loaded with hollow points which are like thermonuclear warheads.
I don't think Bettman wants another franchise in Canada.
Pissed that Spain fucked up their group?
Maybe a Porsche. If VW has serious trouble who knows?
Per the article, there's a huge backlog of inventory they may still be allowed to sell, but if so it's going to come on the heels of the 2017 inventory.
