Spends Half A Million On 'Culturally-Appropriate' Food Stamps

Refugees receiving food subsidies will get "culturally appropriate fruits and vegetables" thanks to grants from the federal government.

The Department of Agriculture (USDA) is allocating $564,231 to an aid group that helps refugees sign-up for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The initiative is called "Fresh Fund: Leveraging investment for a healthier food system in refugee and immigrant communities," according to USDA's announcement. USDA said the goal for the program is to "increase availability of locally-grown, culturally appropriate fruits and vegetables among refugee and immigrant populations," and set a benchmark for the IRC to "enroll at least 3,100 participants in Fresh Fund over four years."

I regrow the tops in the yard. I end up with very small pineapples two years later - about 1/3 to 1/2 scale. They are outstanding - by far better than the "ripened on the way across the pacific" variety. But I don't do anything other than root the top and put it out in the yard. Maybe if I enhanced the soil I'd get a bigger fruit.

I don't see how anyone makes a living off of the things. It takes a fairly large space to get one fruit that retails for $2-$4. The farmer can't be getting more than $0.50 per pineapple. They do seem pretty self-sufficient though. Maybe if land is cheap enough and you don't have to irrigate....

Not one of those statutes was ever ruled unconstitutional. So, for whatever value anybody besides you places on your personal moral judgments, you're 1 for 4 on "unprecedented", "illegal", "immoral" or "unconstitutional".

Consider this possibility: maybe Trump really isn't the worstestest and most dangerestest person to ever seek office, and you simply had your head planted up your ass when a parade of past presidents actually did all of the shit that Trump promises to do that you find so uniquely horrifying.

I'd go the other direction. Do it like chess. Each candidate gets a fixed amount of time to spend as they wish. If you want to use your hour talking about the moderator's mom, that's your deal.

It solves a lot of the problems. Like the "Trump got 15 opportunities and Rand got 3" issue. If they load up one candidate, he's gonna run out of time before the end.

In a two person debate, I'd use the chess clock and just let them debate, sans moderator. Let the clock control the microphone. When you are done talking, you hit the button to stop the clock and your opponent can start talking. Easy-peasy, lemon squeezey.

A weight-loss device approved by the FDA last week has some doctors up in arms, with one even attempting to put together 4,000 physicians to sue the agency. That's because they say the device, which lets patients pump some of the food they've just eaten directly from their stomachs into the toilet, isn't safe and may lead to eating disorders.

"This is the first time that I look at a device that was approved by the FDA and I am absolutely, utterly, and totally appalled that it was approved," says Joseph Gutman, an endocrinologist and diabetologist in Pembroke Pines, Florida, who has treated patients with obesity for over 30 years. Gutman says he's put together a group of 750 physicians who want to sue the FDA to take the device off the market; his ultimate goal is to get 4,000 doctors to join him.
