Angry Man Who Resents Your Choices of Deodorant and Sneakers Doesn't Mind $38,000 a Day in Security
Bernie Sanders isn't campaigning anymore but he hasn't suspended his campaign, thus keeping himself eligible for protection.

While Hillary Clinton has effectively clinched the nomination, Bernie Sanders remains the race. There are no more primaries or caucuses scheduled between now and the Democratic convention in Philadelphia in August. Even if super delegates from those states Bernie Sanders won switched their allegiance to him from Hillary Clinton he would not have enough delegates to win. Barring an event that incapacitates Clinton or disqualifies her from the nomination, Sanders doesn't have a chance. Someone waiting in the wings in case of worst case scenario isn't really a candidate anymore.
But he's still wasting taxpayer money. The Washington Post reports that while Sanders is no longer actively campaigning, his campaign remains active because he has not "suspended" it, and thus Sanders continues to receive up to $38,000 a day in secret service protection. Sanders has about as much chance of being the Democratic nominee as Ted Cruz has of being the Republican nominee. And given that Trump is more likely to precipitate a worst case scenario unprompted than Clinton, Sanders may have less of a chance even than Cruz, who is no longer receiving secret service protection, does.
The federal government burns through a billion dollars approximately every 150 minutes. The money spent on Sanders is chump change, but the additional money Sanders and his ideology demands the government take from the "rich" above the $6.66 million a minute the feds currently spend isn't.
Sanders made a big point in his campaign over the say he and his followers should have in how other people spend their money. Rather than being theft from the taxpayer, they view taxation as theft from the state. Sanders has rued the idea that there are so many choices of products like deodorant and sneakers in this country. "You don't necessarily need a choice of 23 underarm spray deodorants or of 18 different pairs of sneakers when children are hungry in this country," he said last May, displaying a stunning level of economic ignorance about the basic principles of increased consumer choices leading to increased prosperity.
Sanders' statement was highly dubious. What's not dubious is that Sanders, who is no longer actively campaigning for president and who has not particularly been the target of death threats, doesn't need to have $38,000 a day of taxpayers' money spent on him for secret service protection, irrespective of how many children are hungry in America.
Sanders' campaign manager says he Sanders could endorse Hillary before the convention but declined to explain the difference between endorsing another candidate and dropping out.

You're reading that wrong. He's saying that it's more likely that someone takes a shot at Trump pre-election than somebody taking a shot at Hillary, yet Trump's closest competitor has already dropped out.
I don't believe I am, but you are welcome to think as you wish. It's a free country.
I think we can all agree that it was poorly worded.
It's a free country.
Not really.
That's what makes it funny.
Parts of it have bits of freedom ...
Oh, for fuck's sake, it's not a particularly free country, compared to, say, the colonies under George the III.
More free than most of the alternatives.
That's how I interpreted it too.
I still do not see that interpretation as being anything but a very tortured reading of the text.
Not really. They specifically describe the "worst case scenario" as some event that incapacitates or kills the presumed nominee before the election in the first paragraph. They are clearly talking about something happening that would make Cliton or Trump unable to run in the general election.
I was about to demand one, given the personages involved.
I wonder if Bernie's protection detail gets hazard pay for working all day in the BO zone.
No kidding. And can you imagine what's probably jumping out of what's left of his hair?
CAMPING IS A LEGITIMATE STRATEGY
-1 headshot.
A Hillary indictment is more likely than anything with Trump.
I think so too. The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy never takes a day off.
How many poor people could we feed with that money?
It's a government jobs program, so of course Bermie approves of it.
It's all about the multiplier.
Thanks Krugman.
On $38,000 a day? Well, first we'd need an inspected commercial kitchen, and those don't come cheap, lemme tell ya. Nutritionists, social workers, poverty advocates, I mean, these people have expensive educations and that also does not come cheap. Comprehensive health insurance for all the employees involved, pensions. We'll need an action committee, a board of directors, non-profit support for public awareness campaigns, accountants and an environmental impact plan.
Let's say four. We could feed four poor people on $38,000 per day.
Let's say four. We could feed four poor people on $38,000 per day.
I don't know, that's sounds awfully high to me. I'm thinking $38,000 a day will just barely all those government employees salaries.
Sadly, while the number may be a debate, the concept is correct. I've seen more than one charitable entity or church have to shut down its aid to the poor due to statutory considerations.
This is sadly the truth.
You forgot the lawyers to do all the paperwork.
The project goes into debt before a single person is fed. Lawyers walk off with the $38k.
Mission Accomplished!
You misspelled Venezuelans.
Yeah, I mean, unlike other Democrat (or Democrat-like) candidates, his 2nd Amendment stance means he's free to carry on his own without danger of hypocrisy.
He's providing them with jobs. Ed wants those poor SS thugs to live on the streets!
They're government employees. They'll continue to draw a paycheck no matter what.
Christ, what an asshole.
Considering that the presumptive nominee is under active investigation by the FBI, it's not a horrible idea to keep the campaign going.
Hillary has committed federal crimes. Bernie would be stupid to drop out and provide the democrats the opportunity to indite her and install as primary candidate someone they like better. As long as he remains her solitary runner up opponent, they can't replace Hillary with anyone but him without losing the election.
Also, $38,000? What the hell are they paying for that cost that much each day?
I can't make the numbers work out to be anywhere near that amount.
It said "up to".
So think of his biggest rally, and how much it cost to screen all of the attendees.
Isn't that the local law's job? would that even be on the secret service's bill?
No, that's the Secret Service's job. They bring in metal detectors, set up gates and fences around the perimeter, etc etc.
Rallies are very expensive.
The internet claims that the upper bound in pay for a Secret Service protection detail agent is $74k/yr. That would mean Bernie would be going through the annual pay of one every two days. For that to all be personnel expenses, he'd need a detail of over 180 agents. So someone is seriously padding some expenses accounts for travel, lodging and food.
Does the $74k include the value of the Colombian hookers or is that just paycheck money?
74K? Yeah, I'm not buying that. Not if they work mostly in DC and are unionized.
Wages per Secret Service agent with several shifts of agents, advance party costs of agents to next event, hotel costs, special vehicle costs, food costs, per diem for agents, misc costs.
It can add up quick, which is why the whole security of directors of DHS and FBI, etc needs to be reexamined and cancelled. These government officials think they are super special.
There is a good chance that presidential candidates upset some people so much they would kill candidates, so I think we can see protecting them might be worth it. I waiver on ex-president security but I guess having someone kidnapping an ex-president would give "Guarding Tess" some street cred.
It's the government.
He's put in a lifetime of effort to have absolute power over the peasants. He still has a shot. He can taste it. No way he gets out. He is the "Hillary Got Indicted" candidate.
Starbucks for the SS agents.
"You don't necessarily need a choice of 23 underarm spray deodorants or of 18 different pairs of sneakers when children are hungry in this country"
You cannot convince me that Trump or Clinton would be worse on economics than that old socialist buffoon. The man is economically retarded.
As if to say that if we didn't have "a choice of 23 underarm spray deodorants," then the money/capital would go towards feeding impoverished children? Where exactly would that "money" come from? Does the old Berntard think that the government can tax profits that don't exist?
However, I do admire him admitting that "you don't necessarily need choice."
I do admire him admitting that "you don't necessarily need choice."
It's almost refreshing, that honesty. Like stepping into the fresh air, out of a room that Bernie's been not wearing deodorant in.
I'm guessing the stench is more "pickles and fish" but I could be wrong.
Onions dipped in mayonnaise and left out in the sun for a day or two. Also, Bengay.
Also, Bengay.
Definitely Bengay.
Bengay, lately?
The proofreader should be sacked.
AHEM
I doubt she's the proofreader.
Blog posts don't get a proofreader. Do you even internet?
Proofreader?
You must be new around here.
Half the articles look like they're the output of speech to text programs.

WHERE?!?!
I've asked this many times. How the hell is security for a candidate something we get to pay for and not a campaign expense just like travel, renting venues, etc? Why are we subsidizing these assholes' partisan political activities?
What Obama and other presidents have done is even worse.
Using the power of the presidency to fundraise is just plain wrong. Well, actually, the power of the presidency is just plain wrong.
Obama has come to Los Angeles over a dozen times to fundraise, and most it was for the DNC and other candidates. He flies across the country at a cost of millions of taxpayer dollars each time, gets priority routing from Air Traffic control, and has the airspace shut down when he arrives.
Dozens of miles of major streets are closed for hours at a time so his motorcade doesn't have to stop at red lights.
It keeps hundreds of thousands of people from getting to their homes, jobs, and doctors's appointments. In one case, the police and secret service even prevented a pregnant lady from crossing the street to get to the hospital after she had gone into labor.
It's fucking disgusting.
I would be for making campaigning in office illegal. Every President would have to leave office to campaign and then try and get back into office for their constitutionally limited second term. Would work great for keeping many political positions a single term.
Yes. I have also often said that the president shouldn't be allowed to travel for anything not absolutely essential to doing his job unless he pays all travel and security expenses himself. There is very little reason he ever needs to be anywhere but the White House or Camp David or other places that are already secure. It's just a huge expense and a huge burden on people in the places he visits.
With all those angry white men running around stirring up trouble, who wouldn't want a little backup?
....are you suggesting that you need some muscle over here?
Let's say four. We could feed four poor people on $38,000 per day.
Nice.
I have my moments.
..."Even if super delegates from those states Bernie Sanders won switched their allegiance to him from Hillary Clinton he would not have enough delegates to win...."
Bernie has 1832 delegates and 48 Superdelegates. 587 Superdelegates are said to be with Hillary.
2383 delegates are needed to win nomination. 1832+48+587=2467 total delegates for Bernie, so yes he could get enough delegates. Geesh, get your facts more on track.
http://www.nytimes.com/interac......html?_r=0
Geesh, get your facts more on track.
Geesh, learn to read. 587 is all the super delegates pledged to Hillary. Only some 372 of those are from states that Bernie won (from your own source). 372+48+372=2252, 2252 < 2383.
The article said if super delegates left Hillary and there are 587 of them. The article tried to limit the number of super delegates that would leave Hillary to only states that Sanders won. In other words, the premise of this statement in the article is stupid.
My apologies to the rest of the forum for feeding a troll.
How the hell is security for a candidate something we get to pay for and not a campaign expense just like travel, renting venues, etc?
I think they should pay their security expenses out of pocket even after they have been elected.
Their security should be a box containing a pocket pistol and a national carry permit.
Their security should be not actually having enough power to be worth attacking in the first place.
^This.
Well, I'd let them have a shoulder holster.
A member of the nomenklatura like Bernie needs such things, they are to important. If not for Senators how could anything be done in our society?
It's not even about being a benevolent, privileged Senator. It's about Sanders' legacy, which can only be this very moment because he's never done anything else of significance in his adult life. The dude's 74 and this is the most relevance he's had in politics throughout his 30+ year career ? and that's after never having a steady job until the age of 40.
Angry Man is unsecured. I say again, Angry Man is unsecured.
"Man." That's rich.
$38,000? Gasp. That's like a whole 2/5 of a second of federal spending!
Or a year's salary for some people.
Please fix the grammatical error in the first sentence. I can't share this article with Bernie supporters if the first sentence needs editing. C'mon.
Bernie supporters think government money is magic and costs are irrelevant, so I'm not sure what you'd be attempting to accomplish.
But yeah, the level of basic proofreading on this site is abysmal. I blame that new EiC for not immediately laying down the law.
He is the race.
Maybe it could become a meme, sort of like "all of your bases are belong to us".
How can it cost $38K/day for a bodyguard or two? Suppose a bodyguard and his salary & expenses cost $100K per year, and it takes four of them plus a half-timer to maintain 24/7 coverage. Call it five: that would come to $500K/year, which is $1370/day, not $38K/day.
$38K/day should be enough to maintain a team of thirty (30) men on the job 24/7, i.e. 135 full-time $100K/year employees.
How can even the infamously wasteful federal government possibly spend that much on body guards for one candidate?
Vehicles, fuel, ammo, equipment.
per diem for meals, "uniforms" (suits, shoes, ties), personally-fitted security equipment, vests, sunglasses, earpieces, cell phones, weapons, ammo, etc..
I don't think his supporters are choosing any of the 23 options.
He's been a lifetime loafer. He loves not having to do anything in his capacity as senator.
LOL at all of the posters who think there's a snowball's chance in hell that Hillary is going to be indicted by the Obama admin DOJ.
FTFY
And yet, to think, none of those comments by Bernie about antipersprirants and sneakers never made the news. He had a lot more than Secret Service protection.
Excuse me, "ever" made the news....
