The National Rifle Association has endorsed Donald Trump.

    Hopefully with a Venn diagram.

      Quite the BS endorsement.

If I remember it right, Trump supported the AWB.

This is turning out to be Team Red loyalty.

It'll be interesting to see who Gun Owners of America endorses.

      1. Chipper Morning Wood   9 years ago

GOA will also endorse Trump. If you think either of these organizations are really single issue, you are a sucker. I learned this during the Sarvis campaign, when Sarvis was clearly better on guns and they endorsed Cuccinelli. I did not renew my GOA membership.

      2. Medical Physics Guy   9 years ago

He's been pretty reliably pro 2A for this campaign though.

        1. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   9 years ago

But he is worlds better in this area than Hilly.

Hey now, the Average White Band was pretty good.

      4. Acosmist   9 years ago

        Better than Hillary.

That has always been the NRA's way and they are not Team Red loyalists. They endorse the best on guns among the available choices.

I quit the NRA when American Hunter put question marks by the Libertarian candidates as their 2A stances.

      5. Ken Hagler   9 years ago

"NRA" actually stands for National Republican Association, so it's hardly surprising.

Great way to duck "have you been interrogated... Er... Interviewed by the FBI yet" questions.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

It would have been interesting to see if Sanders is still in favor of begging off those questions.

I liked the part where they pointed out his replacement has little military experience without getting a statement from Ash Carter on how important military experience is for a Secretary of Defense and how they applauded the guy for sticking up for the right of military brass to publicly criticize their civilian commanders.

'No wonder Charlize Theron left him after they finished this movie!' Sean Penn's film The Last Face is savaged at Cannes and leaves audiences laughing and BOOING

The film, which has received several one-star ratings, was off to a bad start when it opened with a block of text comparing the civil war in South Sudan to 'the brutality of a love, between a man...and a woman.'

Many criticized the film's depiction of suffering in South Sudan, the Sierra Leone, and Liberia as a backdrop for the starry-eyed lovers to play out cringe-worthy scenes, which were likened to the work of famed romance author Nicholas Sparks.

Owen Gleiberman, the chief film critic at Variety, wrote: 'Penn would do well not to mistake his own global caring for an artistic impulse...

'No matter how "well-meaning" a director may be, there's something inherently eye-rolling about being asked to care about the tragedy of African children through the POV of two lovelorn glamourpusses.'

    1. Injun, as in from India   9 years ago

My respect for Charlize Theron instantaneously vaporized after she fell for Sean Penn.

      1. Rhywun   9 years ago

I thought y'all were making that up. I just don't see it.

Goddamn, the idiot yesterday who couldn't figure out that Obama said his oath on MLK's bible. She either didn't know when Lincoln died, didn't know when JFK died, or couldn't do very simple arithmetic. Doing the City a solid: Helping with mowing and bulk trash pickup

A lack of funding has reduced manpower for a whole bunch of [Richmond, VA] City services. Here's how you can help (and if you want to help, here's what to keep in mind).

Um, no. That's why I pay taxes. It's not my fault that the city government wasted my tax dollars on a spectacle (which they promised would fill city coffers to overflowing) or failure to reel-in an out-of-control, unaccountable school administration. No fucking way am I doing this. Even more maddening - they are having firefighters fill-in. Firefighters. So, your firefighter is going to show up for your fire or EMS call tired from mowing. Great.

    1. PBR Streetgang   9 years ago

O/T (sort of): I missed you in the AM links, but yesterday I was the one that mentioned Petersburg as a site for libertopia. It is definitely a craphole now, but I grew up there, went to the public schools K-12 (explains my shaky grammar and poor typing skills), played basketball in HS there, still have family there, etc., so I'm nostalgic for the place and hate to see it crater (ha!). The whole place is depressing and wiping it clean (politically and bureaucratically speaking of course) is a daydream of mine. The problems are too systemic to fix, but I can dream.

      1. Tonio   9 years ago

Thanks, PBR. Check out my comment in today's AM links where I detail the current sorry state of the place.

      2. PBR Streetgang   9 years ago

Your comments are spot on. The water bill fiasco is hard to believe, but my relatives get their bills sporadically and the charges are random at best. And the "leadership". . . just sad.

    2. Rhywun   9 years ago

Are these volunteer firefighters? Cuz otherwise I don't see them doing this out of the goodness of their hearts.

On Monday, a park visitor reported to a park ranger that he saw several people off the boardwalk at Grand Prismatic Spring on Saturday. That visitor provided 26 photos and a 22-second video of them, according to the affidavit written by Park Ranger Alec Chapman.

The photos and video showed four individuals leaving the boardwalk, approaching the spring, taking pictures or videos of themselves, and reaching into the spring. The nearest boardwalk was 25 yards away. The affidavit does not explain why the fourth individual was not charged.

Yet people seem to think she's still a shoo-in for the General Election... despite the fact that *merely appearing in front of audiences* is something she and her campaign staff see as "Only hurting her".

You'd think she'd relish the opportunity to get in front of the people of California and remind them how awesome-sauce she is relative to Trump, right?

How fucking doomed is she that her best-call is to keep a low profile?

There is some question of diplomacy when a world leader jumps to finger-pointing. It's provocative, reactionary, apt to bring out phrases like "saber-rattling" and "hot-headed cowboys". And speaking before there was any effective means of knowing a thing about the crash was gauche.

On the other hand, he's coming off as the only guy in the room who will say what a lot, and maybe many, people thought first. And that's what will be remembered.

      I disagree.

If you assume it's terrorism, and act upon that assumption, and are wrong, then you have likely punished people unjustly.

The wreckage will be found. The black boxes will be retrieved. The corpses, wreckage and recorded data will tell you what happened. If the aircraft was brought down by purposeful, malignant action, then you can set about deciding how to react, and being well informed your reactions will be more appropriate than ones informed by prejudice.

      1. waffles   9 years ago

Well, they did in fact treat it like it was terror by passing a security alert to all airports. I agree that reprisals should wait for proof, but prevention and investigating like it is terror seems prudent.

The co-pilot of EgyptAir Flight 990, which crashed off New England in 1999, killing 217 people, deliberately crashed the plane as an act of revenge, according to a source close to the investigation. Gamil el-Batouty had earlier been reprimanded for sexual misconduct and the executive who told him he would not be allowed to fly US routes again was on board the plane.

It's not like Egytair has a spotless record.

University of Miami Establishes Chair for Study of Atheism

With an increasing number of Americans leaving religion behind, the University of Miami has received a donation in late April from a wealthy atheist to endow what it says is the nation's first academic chair "for the study of atheism, humanism and secular ethics."

The chair has been established after years of discussion with a $2.2 million donation from Louis J. Appignani, a retired businessman and former president and chairman of the modeling school Barbizon International, who has given grants to many humanist and secular causes ? though this is his largest so far. The university, which has not yet publicly announced the new chair, will appoint a committee of faculty members to conduct a search for a scholar to fill the position.

    1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

We didn't want anyone to misunderstand and think that this was to be an advocacy position for someone who is an atheist," he said. "Our religion department isn't taking an advocacy position when it teaches about Catholicism or Islam. Similarly, we're not taking an advocacy position when we teach about atheism or secular ethics."

Asked whether he anticipated any backlash, Mr. LeBlanc said: "This is an area where people can get overly excited if they don't actually look carefully at what's happening. The idea that there are nondeity approaches to explaining our surroundings is not controversial in the academy."

Mr. Appignani said he rejected a last-minute proposal from a dean to call it a chair in "philosophical naturalism." Instead, he and the university leaders worked out the title, broadening the scope by including humanism and secular ethics.

Mom creates 'permission slip' so adults won't stop her sons from climbing trees

Julie Holcombe's twin sixth-grade sons, Ryan and Patrick, often meet up in a field near their middle school with friends ? "the squad," as they call themselves ? to walk home from school together.

In the field, which connects two neighborhood middle schools near their home in Yardley, Pennsylvania, the boys can hang out, climb trees and play football.

Last week, the 12-year-olds were doing just that when they said an adult they didn't know approached them.

"The man asked us to get out of the tree, and he said, 'I've been watching you climb this tree after school for a while, and even sent a security guard over to talk to you, but you were being evasive of the officer,'"[...]

"He told us, 'I don't want you kids climbing, because if you fall and get hurt, the school would be responsible and could get sued,'" Ryan said. "He said, 'You aren't in trouble, but if you do it again, I'm going to contact your principal.'"[...]

When her sons told her what happened, Holcombe was incensed that her children were being discouraged from playing outside.

So she typed up a letter and a "permission slip" for climbing trees, and gave it to her sons so they could show it to anyone else who approached them.

Recently, an article published by Broadly claimed, "Everyone knows [bad boys] ? are desirable. Thanks to a recent study, this is now scientifically verifiable."

The research it refers to is a study published earlier this year, which suggested that some men smoke and drink because this makes them more attractive short-term partners.[...]

One way to investigate the issue is to present women with hypothetical men with different personality types and see which ones they prefer. In one such study, participants had to help a fictional character named Susan choose a date from three male contestants, based on their answers to her questions.[...]

So which contestant did participants think Susan should date and who did they prefer to date themselves? Contrary to the stereotype that nice guys finish last, it was actually the nice contestant that was chosen most frequently for both Susan and for participants themselves.

In another study, participants who read dating ads in which people described themselves as altruistic ("I volunteer at the food bank") were rated as more attractive short-term dates and long-term partners than those who didn't mention such qualities. Other studies have similarly shown that women prefer men who are sensitive, confident and easy-going, and that very few (if any) women want to date a man who is aggressive or demanding. The picture that emerges is clear: when women rate hypothetical partners, they clearly prefer "nice" men.

    4. commodious spittoon   9 years ago

Casino Royale was great. I never saw "Quantum". Skyfall was "meh". Just watched Spectre this week.

I'm having a hard time with the way that the introduction of the Craig-bond sort of 'reinvented' the entire Bond narrative while trying to keep some bits of the old one.

Its like the Nolan Batman was expecting you to see the Keaton batman as the same guy, or something. It an awkward approach they took. The whole "Q is a young genius", "MoneyPenny is a hot black woman" thing hasn't seemed to work that well as far as i see it.

Although i think the way they handled "M" (whatshername? Judy Dench) as Bond's ally who gets killed ... i think that's the one aspect of the 4 film-arc which actually works really well. She's sort of his one 'real ally" and the real plot of all 4 films is that "Bond Can't Trust His Own People"...

(Though the way they're trying to tie up all the various bad-guys of the previous 3 films as all just separate Spectre people.... i guess would make more sense to me if i watched them closely in sequence. Spread out over...what, 10 years? makes it far harder to follow or care about)

          1. commodious spittoon   9 years ago

Quantum was a hot mess, but Royale and Skyfall were very entertaining (Royale far and away, of course). Haven't seen Spectre, but I haven't heard nice things. Is it at least somewhere between Quantum and Skyfall?

            1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

I actually haven't finished it. I got 3/4 of the way through a few days ago and stopped and haven't gotten back to it.

What i've seen so far is "good" but the problem seems to be that this film is like the "One that ties together all the plot lines from Royale-Skyfall into a summarizing "4th act"

if you don't remember the details from the previous 3, it actually requires going back and refreshing yourself, which i found annoying. *(which is also why the whole series is on my mind)

Yes, what i've seen so far probably puts it between the two you mention.

One part slightly-annoying is their attempt to shoehorn in a Mute Bruiser-Badguy a la "Jaws"

(only he's "Thumbs" - not kidding: he has spikes on his thumbs and kills people by drilling out their eyes)

He's not funny, he's not interesting. He's just there.

Republican Sen. Todd Weiler said his resolution declaring pornography a public health crisis, which sailed through the 2016 session, was only the first step. He plans to introduce at least three new proposals next session including one that could require Internet service providers add filters so everyone in Utah has to opt-in to view pornography.

Are You Successful? If So, You've Already Won the Lottery

    Skipping to the end:

The human tendency to underestimate luck's role has contributed to this troubling state of affairs by reducing the electorate's willingness to support the public investments that make economic success possible. But the taxes people want to avoid need not be personally painful.

    1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

Evidence from the social sciences demonstrates that beyond a certain income threshold, people's sense of well-being depends much more on their relative purchasing power than on how much they spend in absolute terms. If top tax rates were a little higher, all homes would be a little smaller, all cars a little less expensive, all diamonds a little more modest and all celebrations a little less costly. The standards that define "special" would adjust accordingly, leaving most successful people quite satisfied.

Happily, there is a simple remedy: Merely prompting people to reflect on their good fortune tends to make them more willing to contribute to the common good, according to a 2010 study published in the journal Emotion. So try to engage your successful friends in discussions about their experiences with luck. In the process, you may increase their willingness to support the kinds of public investments that will enhance the next generation's odds of success. And you will almost surely hear some interesting stories.

    4. Zeb   9 years ago

Well, every living organism has won the lottery, if you think about it. Just think how unlikely it was for the Earth to form in just the way it did and for life to evolve in just such a way that every individual organism is just exactly the way it is right now. Luck.

Collectivism is its own reward. Everyone should WANT to be a little poorer in exchange for the mental-feeling-of-bliss that comes with knowing it produces a "Betterment" of society which somehow never actually materializes.

      1. commodious spittoon   9 years ago

I like that the history of capitalism has been the steady enrichment of everyone with the tremendous enrichment of some, and collectivists promise to impoverish everyone--but only modestly!--so they can provide substandard benefits and lackluster services.

Seriously though, police videos are TOTALLY making police more reticent to vigorously enforce the law and stuff

ATLANTA (AP) ? Two deputies yell "Stop fighting!" and "He's got my Taser!" as they repeatedly stun a handcuffed man in the back of a vehicle, commanding him to relax even as he insists "I'm dead," shortly before he stops breathing, body-camera videos show.

    1. commodious spittoon   9 years ago

"What's your problem, buddy?" one deputy says. "That's a good way to get shot right there. I tell you right now, you grab my Taser again, it's gonna be on."

I've told stories about my eastern european trips about once a month. my impression of all the states you mention (and the ukraine and hungary) is that most are average in ratio between 'hot' and 'kill with fire', and would fare far better if the national diet(s) weren't some combination of vodka/cigarettes/starchy food, making 'pasty and unhealthy w/swollen eyes & cheeks' sort of the dominant look.

all of them are basically shit compared to Slovenia, where you can't throw a rock without hitting a supermodel.

I'd also rank Scandinavia better, because while the hot-ratio isn't much higher, the heat is White-hot-fire rather than the frequent "meh, Would" you find in the Slavic states.

It's not even "PC culture," as if we've all more or less agreed to some new moral standard. It's self-styled culture police terrorizing the ambivalent majority of people with something to lose. The second we quit humoring their hysterics, their power is broken.
