Gary Johnson Pitches Himself as Independents' Choice for President
Who represents the majority of Americans who don't affiliate with a party?

Libertarian presidential front-runner and 2012 nominee Gary Johnson, who was the Republican governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003, appeared on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos to make a pitch to Americans dissatisfied with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Republican and Democratic presidential nominees.
Asked whether he saw conservative talk about a potential third-party candidacy to repudiate Trump as a threat or opportunity, Johnson insisted it was a "real opportunity" because "Clinton and Trump are the two most polarizing figures in politics today."
Johnson noted that more than 50 percent of Americans identified as independent. "I happen to think they're libertarian but don't know it," Johnson said. Many Americans, according to Johnson, were looking for "fiscally responsible, fiscally conservative, small government and then individual choices—freedom, liberty." People believe they "should be making choices in their own lives, not the government."
Stephanopoulos asked Johnson for his "direct pitch" to "never Trump conservatives," but Johnson said he had a "direct pitch to everybody," the website isidewith.com. "Take the political quiz and at the end… you get paired up with the presidential candidate most in line with your views."
"Shouldn't you find out who you most pair up with and then just knock yourself out supporting that candidate?" Johnson asked.
Johnson also disagreed that he would pull more votes from Donald Trump than Hillary Clinton as a presidential candidate, pointing to
a Monmouth poll that showed him "taking" more votes from Clinton than Trump. "At the end of the day, 50 percent of Americans say they're independent. Well, where's their representation?" Johnson asked. "I think it happens to be Libertarian."
Stephanopoulos mentioned Johnson's 2012 finish—a million voted—and asked whether Johnson needed more reach and more money to do better than that.
"It's a real chicken and egg thing," Johnson replied. "If you're not in the polls, of course, you don't get the attention." Johnson also pointed to the Presidential Debate Commission, which was "at the heart of why this system is so rigged." Johnson has to clear 15 percent in the polls to appear in the presidential debates, but it's hard to hit that number if you're not in the debate.
Stephanopoulos brought up Ross Perot making it into the presidential debates in 1992 and Johnson noted that "that's when the League of Women Voters backed out, saying that the whole thing is a rigged game and that's when the Presidential Debate Commission moved in."
The League of Women Voters actually withdrew from the presidential debates in the 1988 cycle, after rejecting demands by the major party candidates the league said would "add debates to their list of campaign-trail charades devoid of substance, spontaneity and honest answers to tough question." The Presidential Debate Commission ran the last 1988 presidential debate and every presidential debate since then, including the 1992 debate that featured Perot. That was the first debate since 1980 to include a third party candidate, and the most recent one to do so.
"You gotta be in the polls, for starters," Johnson said. "Come the fall, it wouldn't be surprising to me to say well, Gary Johnson, he wasn't polling well at all. Well, the fact will be that I wasn't in the polls."
Johnson argued there was "legitimacy" to including him in the polls. "The Libertarian party is going to be on the ballot in all 50 states," Johnson said. "If I'm the Libertarian nominee, I'm going to be the only third party on the ballot in all 50 states."
Johnson was also asked about his admitted marijuana use and whether he'd stop if he were elected president. Johnson said he would and then used the question as a segue to talk about legalizing marijuana.
"Legalizing marijuana recreationally will lead to less overall substance abuse," Johnson argued, "because people are going to find it as such a safer alternative than everything else that's out there, starting with alcohol."
It would also help with ending the drug war. "There are tens of millions of Americans who are convicted felons in this country that but for our drug laws, would otherwise be taxpaying, law-abiding citizens," Johnson said.
The interview ended with a question from Stephanopoulos about who Johnson would choose between Trump and Clinton if he were forced to. Johnson said he'd been voting Libertarian "a long time."
"I'm always believing that there's going to be a libertarian on the ballot," Johnson insisted.

If you can't pick up some traction this year then I don't know what to say.
Unfortunately the "We can't let #horribleperson win" compulsion will be strong as well.
Get ready to not say much, then. The American people don't like Libertarian policies and don't want freedom.
The reason Rand Paul lost isn't because he's not charismatic. It's because people did not like his policies. Same with Ron Paul and Gary Johnson.
Nope, what the American people want is a crackdown on free trade and an uptick in free shit.
Say "Hey can our candidate be in the polls?" Or "Hey can our candidate get some media coverage?".
3?once I saw the draft of 3500 bucks, I admit that my sister was like really generating cash in his free time with his COM. My aunt has done this for only 6 months and by now repaid the loan on their home and bought a new BMW..Start Here..... http://www.elite36.com
If libertarians can't significantly increase their vote this year, then maybe some libertarians should give up libertarian purism publicly and either change their name or start a new Freedom Party. Too bad the protectionist nationalist populists have coopted the Freedom Party name, so maybe a Individual Freedom Party would be better.
Limericks from 1788!
You can play too!
John McAfee?
Donald Trump?
Bingo.
McAfee is a joke, and there is already one of those in the race
It's jokes all the way down. The avowed socialist, her Highness, the raft of forgettable nobodies pulling low single-digit support, the corpulent gasbag, the impossibly taciturn brain surgeon whose big laugh lines are about how little he registers, the attorney-cum-televangelist, the against-all-odds bitter clinger, and, yes, the inarticulate chump whose base makes Idiocracy seem aspirational.
Mcafee only joined half a year ago because the hacker party doesn't hire geezers. Austin is antichoice and favors the initiation of force, so he can't even join except as an impersonator. Good candidates like Darryl are ignored here and in debates. Fortunately, it hardly matters. There is nothing Gary can do to mess up our capture of spoiler votes. So unless the Tea and Prohibition parties infiltrate our platform committee, we'll keep winning (repealing bad laws) just like always.
"Austin is antichoice and favors the initiation of force, so he can't even join except as an impersonator"
But being against the freedom of whether or not to bake a cake is just peachy.
Johnny Fuckerfaster!
I'm very likely going to volunteer with his campaign, though I am waiting to see how things shake out first. In know, I know, freedom of association. And yeah, that's disappointing. But he isn't going to win regardless, and there is so much to gain from having a libertarian get on stage in the debates or draw a noticeable vote total, that it completely outweighs the downsides of having someone who may not pass the purity test. There is a real opportunity here to enter the conversation in a serious way, and we need to seize it.
A conversation currently being conducted between a blithering moron and a mendacious, openly corrupt hack. Johnson may present an eminently more rational voice but I can't help but think it will be lost on the audience.
Most of them, sure. But getting into double digits would be a nice first step.
I find it hard to believe that Gary Johnson would steal Clinton/Democrat votes. I can count on one hand how many of them, that I've met, who are fiscally conservative and believe in self governance. You might actually find a few Trump voters that do believe in those things.
The moderate, center to right-leaning blue dog Democrats, who I think would be open to a libertarian's views, are pretty much non-existent these days.
Someone once told Adlai Stevenson, "Every thinking person will vote for you!"
Stevenson replied, "But I need a majority."
Libertarians have WON every election since our platform hit the streets in 1972. Lots of folks don't know the definition of government, others are puzzled by "what is a right?" But we win because our spoiler votes repeal bad laws and lower taxes. Scot Adams says Repetition is Truth, Orwell said Ignorance is Strength, but anyone can look at the Prohibition and Income Tax amendments and realize that Losing is Winning if you platform changes laws, just like Milton pointed out in "Free to Choose."
...there is so much to gain from having a libertarian get on stage in the debates...
There probably would be. But we're talking about putting Gary Johnson on stage during debates. In addition to not being a libertarian, he's also got a personality like melba toast and couldn't even handle softballs from John Stossel. Quickest way to make sure nobody in the mainstream ever even considers voting Libertarian would be to let an also-ran Republican who smokes pot (literally and figuratively) be your standard bearer.
Johnson did well enough in the GOP primary debates so I don't worry much about that. Trump is terrible and no one believes anything Clinton says. Johnson will be fine.
I like his personality. Who would you rather live next door to; Clinton, Trump or Johnson?
I will vote for him. But I know some pretty brilliant Libertarians who are not weird and off-putting. It would be nice if the LP would recruit one of them.
Maybe if the qualifications extended beyond "recycled Republican"?
We're missing a golden opportunity this election cycle. People are actually open to voting for a third party because the two main candidates are so terrible. Sure, a lot of these votes would be protest votes but people are now open to persuasion. Johnson would make a fine President but he's a terrible ambassador for the Libertarian Party. He's boring and doesn't seem to be passionate about his views. McAfee's better spoken and sort of insanely brilliant but he has his own obvious flaws like maybe, just maybe, he's a murderer. Peterson has the passion Johnson lacks but, Christ, he's irritating. It's a shame that we, like the major parties, couldn't come up with a better batch of candidates.
I don't totally disagree, but Johnson is respectable, and that may be a real asset as a contrast to Trump and Clinton. My hope is that a libertarian will have an opportunity to present a sane case alongside the major parties. The LP has had plenty of... colorful candidates in the past, and frankly, someone who can break free of that image would be a good thing.
The respectability thing is a good point-he's the nonsleazeball candidate. I don't know how many people that'll attract but it's a definite plus.
I don't know how to break it to you guys, but "CEO of a pot company" doesn't exactly scream "non-sleazeball" to the over-40 crowd in either mainstream party. Marijuana's more popular than it used to be, but it's not quite that popular. "Professional politician" isn't exactly an asset in this climate either. We have to go back to before the youngest voters in 2016 were born to get to a time when Gary Johnson was working as something other than a politician or political agitator.
well.... boomer generation is probably the biggest dope smoking generation. Johnson's problem will be evangelical Christians and crazed Clinton worshippers.
CEO of a pot company does qualify as working as something other than a politician or political agitator
as for marijuana's popularity, you might have a point there... but do you honestly see any way a person who sees pot use as a major problem, could ever be brought into the libertarian way of thinking. we can, and do, sometimes make concessions on "harder" drugs.... those that john Q public sees as too dangerous to be legal... (or, we temporarily compromise, 'cause Rome was not built in a day) but "what about pot" has always been an area where libertarians start to find common ground with others. those who cant stand the idea of legal pot, are as likely to vote libertarian, as a liberal welfare lover is to vote republican, or a big military lover is to vote dem.
I think what johnson really needs are more stock photos where he looks really baked and goofy.
"Johnson 2016: Because America needs a president who's baking rather than liberty-taking."
You mean baking for nazis?
"Feel the Johnson"
We don't need better candidates - we need much worse candidates that make our bad candidates look good by comparison. It's worked for the two major parties for a long time - "vote for me because I'm not as bad as the other guy". I mean, for Chrissakes, that's the whole damn reason we're where we're at right now. The main reason to vote for Trump is he's not Hillary and the main reason to vote for Hillary is she's not Trump, and that's going to be pretty much the entirety of their campaign for the next 6 months. We need to get a convicted child molester and a street mime and an alcoholic with Tourette's to run - and then we very publicly kick them out of the party saying "No! Go away! We don't allow nasty freaks like you in our party! Only intelligent, reasonable, nice people are allowed in here!" And then you smile at the public and say, "Why come right in! We love having intelligent, reasonable, nice (and might I add, witty, handsome, charming and sexually desirable) people such as yourselves in our party!"
We need their votes, and some money couldn't hurt. But we do not need unprincipled whack jobs drawn to the unusual and steered our way by the other parties' bouncers.
Actually, Johnson's low-key manner might be an advantage. After all, if you want vote blustering blowhard, you don't have to go all the way down the ballot to the Libertarians...
You know, a real Libertarian would not adopt a slogan like "Feel The Johnson". No, a real Libertarian would get some big fat checks for making his slogan "Feel The Johnson ... Wax, Smooth As A Norelco Shave, Refreshing As A Cold Coors Light, Dependable As A Duracell - Brought to you by Pepsi and the fine folks at Nabisco". And then he could point out he's a better businessman than Trump for making money off his campaign and more transparent than Hillary about who his corporate sponsors are and what do you have against creativity and initiative paying off for a smart guy trying to make a buck? You some kinda un-American commie hippie freak?
Why would big corporations who depend on cronyism and regulatory capture for their wealth and power buy ad space on a Libertarian?
Easier to have Trump do an Augean stables job on the looter party that used to be theirs before the televangelists took it over.
Johnson has the personality of a potato. For an (alleged) gay man, he completely lacks flamboyance and salesmanship of any kind.
As a libertarian, how the hell do I sell Johnson in 20 seconds or less? What's the hook? He's like that college Republican you knew who liked to suck cock/smoke weed and was thus kind of socially liberal! By comparison, with McAfee I can say the libertarian party is the first to run a guy wanted for murder in a foreign country. Boom. People are going to at least Google that guy.
Everyone has problems but not all know how to deal with them. John McAfee steps up and gives people a shot at finding solutions by creating The Brown List.
Say what you will about the guy, at least he knows how to make a marketable name.
Seriously, Brown List?
Does it work like the Brown Note?
Sadly, I never met that guy. If I had, I might have actually finished college...
"Don't believe in Trump or Clinton? Then believe in yourself. Vote for Gary Johnson because he wants to give power back to you."
'Give power back to you' to most voters seems to mean getting to vote yourself free shit or vote to protect yourself from dirty brown people, judging by the primaries so far.
Ask not what you can do for yourself but what your country should do for you.
Yep. Most voters would read that as "give power to US" rather than "give power to ME".
The government is the people. So the more power we give to government, the more power we give to ourselves. Only with complete and total tyranny can we be free.
I'll be quoting you.
If they vote for a libertarian, they can interpret it how they want
serendipitous elucidation?
Hand the man or woman a cigar! Make it some of that Cannibal Saliva that Gary is so spaced out on. Our platform wins with every spoiler vote hurled into the teeth of entrenched machine looters. Look at the Gallup trends graph Reason published a couple months back...
Every libertarian vote helps make America better, just like communist and prohi votes made it worse in 1909.
How is that, he is a Social Liberal. They are snowflakes. We need a Cultural Libertarian.
True
Really? you're kidding.
why?
Twenty seconds is already fifteen seconds too long for most Americans' tolerance for libertarianism.
There was a piece...somewhere... the other day, pointing out that 60% or so of voters are planning to vote "Against" someone this year.
Only 30-40% were actually "pro" either candidate.
3rd party voting accomplishes nothing for people in that sort of environment.
You are quite demented. My guess is you are one of those poor saps being paid by the Clinton campaign to post crap anywhere and everywhere.
Besides, USA is meat and potatoes country. Johnson is going to do well.
He's not gay. And he's got one hot fiancee/wife (not sure if they married yet or not). See the GQ article about him from back in the 2008 race. How many other people running for Prez have summitted Mt. Everest? With a newly healed broken ankle?

The schools in my district, like many others around the country, have headed off this problem by simply closing the locker rooms. Now, phys ed classes only do activities kids can do in their regular clothes, and then they sit sweaty and stinky in class for the rest of the day. Teachers have started bringing Vicks Vaporub to put under their noses to mask the odor.
is there even a single 'trans' kid in their school? or is it just the *idea* which makes everyone go ballistic?
Whats so stupid about this fucking issue is that it has almost nothing to do with the 'trans' people and is just a game of theoretical one-upmanpersonship on "who is more tolerant" by the left, and "who cares about The Children!!?!'" by the right.
They both wave their bloody flags and pretend like they're speaking on behalf on the oppressed, but the fucking reality is that there's almost no one being 'repressed' anywhere. Its likea handful of cases across the country where there's a 'real person' asking 'where do i pee'? and in every case there's probably some simple fucking solution like "here", but NOOOOOOO everyone has to use it as their opportunity to pretend that they're on the side of everything good and right and proper else the future fall in the hands of the Enemy.
Yes, there is, which is how this got started. The school attempted multiple accommodations for the student but that was never the point. The point is that everyone must acknowledge she is a girl and treat her exactly the same as any other girl including showering with the girls.
To your point there were several simple solutions but they were all rejected when proposed.
Of course. Because as you note = its not about the actual 'practical, mundane reality' of making accommodation.
Its about finding any possible area where people might possibly disagree and then screeching like a wounded beast and calling your opponents intolerant bigots for failing to concede 100% to all demands, including the words that people are allowed to use and the range of opinions people are allowed to express.
I'm not as demanding; I just want the showering part.
I took the isidewith.com quiz again, showing all the candidates - GJ narrowly ahead (at 88%) with Darryl Perry, Austin Peterson and Marc Allan Feldman close behind, then a slight drop to Ted Cruz with McAfee just below Cruz - then a big drop to John Kasich (?) with Trump behind him then a big drop to a three-way tie at the bottom between Hillary and Bernie and Jill Stein. I scored a closer match with Rand the first time I took the quiz than with GJ this time and Kasich was down there with Hillary and Bernie the first time around.
Santa, please bring Gary a campaign manager two months early... and a mean objectivist speechwriter like that one Ronnie Reagan hired.
I can never unthink that...

If, God forbid, GayJay gets the LP nominee here's a tip to maximize his vote total. KEEP HIM OFF TV AND VIDEO, RADIO AND AUDIO TOO. Run him as NOTA. The less voters no the better.
Gary Johnson fits perfectly with the 2016 theme of "Are -these- our only choices?" and will totally get my "anybody but those two!" vote.
That was smart.
GUYS GUYS GUYS
Nick and everyone in REASON !!!
We need to Push Gary Johnson. If I saw some true momentum here, I'll vote for Gary over Clinton.
I would had voted for John Kasich or Clinton.
I believe that he would steal a significant amount of the Trump vote and the Democratic Vote.
I think given how much the country hates both Clinton/Trump, this is BEST opportunity for Gary Johnson and the Libertarian.
Let's push for Gary Johnson !!!
Gary Johnson Pitches Himself as a Social Liberal. Social Liberal have to be the most Fascist a holes alive.

Who would be Johnson's VP candidate?
I wonder if he could get someone like JC Watts. He probably doesn't pass the Libertarian Purity Test, but he endorsed Rand and would help to draw votes from both Republicans and Democrats.

Who represents the majority of Americans who don't affiliate with a party?
Sadly, there are not enough intelligent people to recognize there is no difference between the socialist slaver Heil Hitlery or the fascist Trump the Grump.
Voting Libertarian would only make our beloved country a free country.
I'm having a hard time deciding whether the majority of citizens in Amerika want to be slaves to the State or they are blatantly ignorant due the failed government monopoly school system.
Can anyone out there help me out here?
IMHO: It all finally comes down to parenting and education (both inside and outside of school).

I think GJ would be a case of the party hurting the candidate. Talked with a co-worker about him and she said she could vote third party, but NEVER Libertarian because libertairians want to get rid of social security, pubic schools, and let everyone own guns and smoke pot.
Yep, that's unfortunately what most people think.
...and that's a problem?
For this woman, it is apparently. She is the divorced mom of two teenagers and this is Northern Virginia where probably 80% of the population are gov't employees, contractors (we both work for one), or retirees. Libertarians are very scary to them.
Bill Clinton got inaugurated with 30-something percent of the vote. Do you intend to let that happen again?
The folly of running 3rd party candidates is that the Dems will always pull a significant enough plurality to win.
Hillary is certainly reviled and uninspiring, but that doesn't mean the party won't largely vote for her in lockstep.
Clinton won by over 43% actually, both times.
I think GJ would pull votes away from the dems from the under 18-35 group. And Hillary has already lost blue collar dems to Trump, so I think GJ could just as easily help him. There's also the very slim chance that he could beat both of them in the popular vote, which is what I am hoping for.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS vote. Go to the polls, and vote. Better yet, vote absentee Even if there's nobody you want to vote FOR, there are likely some candidates or propositions that you want to vote against.
But you're not obligated to mark a choice for every option. People DO count the number of "no votes" for each candidate, and while it probably doesn't make _much_ difference, it's at least a choice that "None of the above candidates are acceptable."
Where I live, no one stands a chance without a D after their name for congress or local offices. I have had fun writing in my cat's name a couple of times and even myself.
I voted for Gary last time, and will again.
But, I'd be curious to know how many independents and libertarians would go for Rand Paul. He has so many Republican enemies, he can't be too bad.
The isidewith.com link is failing.
This Gary Johnson wants to force Jewish bakers to cook cakes gloritying the Nazis with swastika cakes. It isn't for nothing that I called you guys Rhomites. Your response to forcing Christians to bake for gay weddings is to attack the Jews. It is natural for your antisemitic party to attack the Jews. We have enough enemies without voting in some more.
