John Kasich Dropping Out of Republican Presidential Race
Clearing the way.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich is expected to announce he is dropping out of the Republican presidential race this afternoon, after abruptly cancelling events planned for today in the DC area.
As recently as last night, Kasich vowed to remain in the race as long as no candidate had the sufficient number of delegates (1,237) to win on a first ballot. Donald Trump, who won yesterday's primary contest in Indiana with more than 50 percent of the vote, is estimated to have 1,047. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who has an estimated 565 delegates, dropped out after his poor showing in Indiana yesterday despite Kasich agreeing not to compete in the state.
Kasich was mathematically eliminated from winning enough delegates to secure a first-ballot nomination long ago, and Cruz joined him in recent weeks. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who dropped out in March, won more delegates (173) than Kasich (154) throughout the primary process. Kasich peaked in New Hampshire with an unexpected second place finish (behind Trump) but since then only managed to win Ohio, his home state.
Kasich was one of the few candidates to consistently beat Hillary Clinton in head-to-head polls, but Republican primary voters appear to believe they've found a winner in Trump. There are 445 more delegates at stake in nine more states. The final primaries are on June 7, with California the largest prize that day.

Who?
Some guy, I dunno.
*yawns*
NO! The reports of my dropping out are greatly exaggerated. I vow to continue this campaign to the very end!
Presidents are neither to be seen nor heard.
Don't we wish.
It is past time we had a Milford man in the White House.
Isn't Merkin Muffley a Milford man.

Speaking of events in DC, does anyone now if some muckety-muck is visiting or some stupid "conference" is happening? The State Dept is pretty much on lockdown, as are the surrounding streets. They didn't even have this much security for Netanyahu.
Oh. "Energy Summit". Unccy Joe is speaking.
More frippery. And folderol.
Balderdash and balloon juice?
Blatherskite & bosh, I tells ya!
You don't necessarily need frippery AND folderol when there are hungry children in this country.
Frippery and folderol is all an ancient socialist from Vermont has going for him.
Poppycock!

+1 bugaboo
=1 brouhaha
The State Dept is pretty much on lockdown,
Maybe the FBI is serving subpoenas?
OMFG, that would be so awesome! But no. The (really cheap-looking) red carpet is out.
When did you change your handle? You can still bid no Trump, you know.
Quite a while ago. Believe me, I am still bidding No Trump. I have spades, in spades!
Wow, racist much?
Everyone in DC has spades in spades!
They didn't even have this much security for Netanyahu.
I think that's because Barry wouldn't have minded if something happened then.
I guess this means there isn't going to be a wild, contested convention like much of JournoList has been claiming there would be for the last few months?
At least not on this side of TEAM PURPLE. There is still hope for the other side.
Remember that because of the way delegates are selected, a good number of "Trump" delegates, especially in the early states, are not really Trump supporters. At least half, probably more, of the delegates at the convention are going to be anti-Trump. I still think something noteworthy might occur.
If Kasich drops out though, they don't have an option to vote for anyone else. With no competition he's basically guaranteed to get the minimum number of delegate to win before the convention even starts.
Enter Romney-McCain stage left...
No chance in hell. Romney lost once already, and I don't even think most of the no Trump base wants to see him again. Cruz could have come out of left field because he actually had a campaign and won his position fair and square. Romney would be an imposition of the party elites on the base. Conditions are just not favorable to that kind of behavior right now.
People say this, but the delegates themselves have to adopt the rules of the convention. Seems like there are more than enough opportunities for an organized group to say "fuck it, we're not playing by these rules anymore" and go down some completely different path.
What does "drop out" mean? It is different than suspending a campaign, right? Either way, Kasich has delegates at the convention. Even if he stops campaigning or drops his bid, he's in the convention vote.
If Cruz endorses Trump for "the good of the Party", the "anti-Trump" delegates may just bite their tongues through it all.
I cannot fathom Cruz actually endorsing Trump, however. Trump has been calling him Lyin' Ted for months, has attacked the looks and mental fitness of Mrs. Cruz, and floated the possibility that Cruz's father was somehow involved in the JFK murder conspiracy. Cruz has called Trump a philandering sociopath.
But Cruz signed that piece of paper months ago saying he'd endorse the eventual nominee.
He doesn't have to do an endorsement until it's official though. I could see him waiting until the last second and then just putting a ten dollar ad in a local newspaper endorsing trump.
I would not be surprised if Mrs. Cruz files for divorce the next day; and she would be 100% justified in doing so. Indeed, if she does not divorce him, it shows neither of them actually care about their family and I would feel sorry for their kids.
"I endorse the GOP taking over the presidency; I vehemently condemn Donald Trump as the man to fill that position."
"I heartily endorse the otherwise worthless, moronic jackhole that nevertheless will keep Hillary Clinton out of office."
"There are dozens of people who would be a worse president than Donald Trump. Hitler and Stalin come to mind. I suppose Hillary might very well be one of them. I suggest you vote for Trump, because, why not?"

We've turned an important corner in the campaign, where we all now open the Gary Johnson releases before the John Kasich ones.
Who opens either?
Somebody give that man a taco! Because he better enjoy them now before Trump makes them illegal!
Illegal? Never! A free taco and my love for everyone!
Sigh. I registered Republican (was independent) in California just so I can vote to wreak havoc at the Republican convention. Too bad Cruz and Kasich were such losers they couldn't get that far...
You can still vote for them. Or even Rand Paul if you want. Heck, you could even vote for me!
Pshaw. I've been consistently voting for some guy since I started voting (occasionally, some gal). That has been a totally shitty strategy.
But you voted for That Guy, not This Guy!!!!!!!
We have an open primary, here in California, you can chose any candidate.
Hm, that's what I get for listening to friends of mine and not using the Google. Regardless, now I'm a registered to a party that I want to burn to the ground. How do I go about doing that?
IOW, you lied like a rug...
Don't worry, you can still vote for the cankles!
I'll bet you got laid once, but she lives in Canada.
Reason's one of those groups targeted by state AGs over climate change.
http://freebeacon.com/issues/d.....ring-suit/
Those organizations include some of the nation's preeminent conservative and libertarian nonprofit groups. The AG is requesting Exxon Mobil communications with the Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute, the Federalist Society, the Hoover Institution, the Reason Foundation, and the Mercatus Institute, among other groups.
Libertarian moment.
In a just world, the Reason lawyers would send a not-so-subtle "Fuck off and drown in a sewer" letter to the AGs demanding that stuff......
Give them time - that's exactly what CEI did:
Beautiful
Yeah, right...
I saw in the free speech thread that John & Co. are blaming Kevin Williamson and Charles C.W Cooke for Trump. How the fuck does that work? No one has been more vocal against THE GILDED TOAD than they have...
The only people to blame for Donald Trump's rise are the people who voted for him over the past few months. Was his path to the nomination helped -- whether by intention or not -- by others? Sure. In the end, though, a substantial plurality of voters in the Republican primaries believed Trump is the best choice to lead the Republican Party. Blame them.
I blame people like this for Trump.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y69tkCbeC5o
There's a long list of people responsible for Trump (the news media, the Republican establishment, JEB!, Obama, idiot voters). You could include National Review among them for their condescending attitude about it all (you only like Trump because you're stupid and ill-informed!) but I'd put them pretty low on the list of culprits.
I still think the "Clinton paid him to run securing her appointment" conspiracy theory has legs.
At what point do you think he went "This got out of hand quickly"?
I can't find a link, but didn't one of his staffers admit something like that a few weeks ago?
I haven't ruled that out yet, either.
If she did, she's regretting it. The monster is off his leash, and he's got no problem wrestling her in the mud.
Apparently these voters needed to be cosseted and pandered to and told in no uncertain terms that everything Trump promises the GOP's preferred candidate will promise harder and longer and deeper, despite Trump's promises having all the substance of a cloud of perfume.
sarcasm?
Hate to break this to you, dude, but those two are pretty libertarian...
The first sentence is a lie. The third sentence is so stupid I suspected it was sarcasm.
John likes to blame those two for the GOP's lies and failures of the last two decades, even though neither had much of a reputation until the last couple years.
Like the typical dipshit Trump fan has ever even heard of those two jackanapes.
Has Trump even given them a patented Sad! or Very Mean! tweet yet? Not NR in general, but those two individuals in particular. I'm going to guess not, as I assume they'd brag about it.
If he's tweeted about Williamson, I can't find it.
Has anybody even said those two were responsible for Trump?
Yes. And you know that, because you responded to John saying Williamson is the journalist most responsible for Trump's victory.
It is also hilarious that you call Williamson and Cooke "rootless" in a discussion about Trump.
And you know that, because you responded to John saying Williamson is the journalist most responsible for Trump's victory.
Like we couldn't go and read that thread or something.
" saying Williamson is the journalist most responsible for Trump's victory. It is also hilarious that you call Williamson and Cooke "rootless" in a discussion about Trump."
"It turns out that right-leaning people don't think rootless cosmopolitanism is a core value. Who knew?"
I can't tell if you're insane or just a liar.
Whereas since you are a Trump fan, we know you are both.
The mind-reading here is impressive. Am I Tulpa or Mary?
No, you are some cunt; unimportant in the extreme. If I wasn't already bored I'd just ignore you. Which I will do now. Have fun sinking back into utter irrelevance.
It's called pre-emptive blaming for defeat, in case Trump doesn't get elected. It's as knee-jerk a reaction as blaming racism and obstructionist Republicans for every single promise Obama failed to deliver on. Trump is The One so no blame may attach to Him.
You people in the Reason circle jerk are fucking nuts.
Um, I don't know about the others, but I happen to be nucking futs.
You just noticed?
"I saw in the free speech thread that John & Co. are blaming Kevin Williamson and Charles C.W Cooke for Trump."
Because stupid hillbillies decided to vote for a semi-literate retard and it's National Review's fault they didn't kiss those rednecks' feet and applaud their every belch and guttural noise
Sidd: To be fair, 50 years is twice as old as the "true conservatism" the neotenous creeps at NRO are so butthurt about.
John: Williamson did more to get Trump the nomination than any other single journalist. He really does deserve to hold the David Frum chair for self defeating jackassery at National Review.
Irish: Because stupid hillbillies decided to vote for a semi-literate retard and it's National Review's fault they didn't kiss those rednecks' feet and applaud their every belch and guttural noise.
Who's the semi-literate retard in this conversation?
Still John.
At least "the David Frum chair for self defeating jackassery" is pretty funny.

Although I'm not a conservative, not happy with his Marijuana Policy, not happy with John's defunding of Planned Parenthood in Ohio, I would had voted for Kasich over Hillary. I hate Hillary. I found John Kasich to be the most reasonable candidate running.
But, I have no choice, looks like Hillary :
So the only guy you liked was the one that never had a chance of winning. You remind me of the girls only attracted to gay guys. The fact it's never going to happen lets you pretend that you'd give the other side a fair shot without ever risking actually going through with things.
Hmmm, also sounds like LP voters...
Seems to be a choice between that and being like the girls who are only attracted to abusive guys who prey on their low self-esteem by cheating on them and beating them senseless but nevertheless making them feel like the obligated party.
I've always found it a tough choice, but the gay guys do ultimately wind up being better companions.
But, I have no choice, looks like Hillary :
You absolutely have a choice.
Hi Alice! You do have a choice, and do not have to vote for Hillary. There are other options besides the two major parties, including not voting at all. Also, I have questions:
You state that you are unhappy with Kasich's defunding Planned Parenthood. Why not? Planned Parenthood is a private organization that long ago abandoned its stated goal of assisting low-income women, in favor of partisan politics, self-aggrandizement, and enriching a select few. Further, they are closely associated with a practice that roughly 50% of the country considers morally reprehensible. Would it not be better if, rather than compelling citizens to finance what they believe is murder, the organization paid for itself or was sponsored by interested donors?
Thank you.
You see, Derp-o, Alice Bowie is not very smart and doesn't think things through.
Re: Alice Bowie,
Ah, you get off by thievery, I see...
Seems inevitable, doesn't it?
Crooks of a feather, flock together.
What?! I really thought Kasich would literally never give up. I mean, I expected the guy to still be trying to run for POTUS 2016 in 2017.
"Kasich was one of the few candidates to consistently beat Hillary Clinton in head-to-head polls,"
Why the fuck is anyone still paying attention to polls?? Polsters have, this election, repeatedly and consistently shown themselves to be wrong at everything.
Besides, those polls fail to take into account all the democrats trying to pretend they aren't just going to vote for the Dem nominee. They pick the repub that's losing the worse and claim "Oh, I was going to vote for him, really! But, cest he lost I guess I'll just have to vote for the Democrat." Seriously, this happens every election.
Yeah, I'm more shocked by Kasich's dropping out than by Cruz's. Kasich never had a shot beyond a second-ballot at the RNC. He was likely to reap all of the #NeverTrump votes now that Cruz was gone. Really surprised he's not playing this through.

The squirrels agree with me!
Unlike Cruz, Kasich's poll numbers probably aren't buoyed by people who have never seen him.
Why the fuck is anyone still paying attention to polls?? Polsters have, this election, repeatedly and consistently shown themselves to be wrong at everything.
The pollsters have been ignoring their own polls. One of the more amusing things I've noticed is the 538 has a "polls forecast" that has continually shown large leads for Trump in contested states and then a "polls plus" forecast where they adjust the polling numbers based on...I'm not sure, but they kept adjusting Trump down and Cruz up and then Trump kept winning just like the actual polls showed. Basically "Trump can't possibly win, this poll has to be wrong."
It's not an empirical statement - it's an imperative one.
Are we witnessing the shake-up of our two-party system? One which has existed since before the Civil War?
It is interesting that a country that prides itself on being the beacon of republican democracy has been a political duopoly for 150+ years. Take a look at any other democracy in the world and major political parties come and go.
How many cycles do you think Democrats enjoy before an ascendant party manages to strip away enough of their support to form a realistic challenge? I think the GOP is relegated to perpetual junior partner after November, maybe keeping the House but probably losing the Senate.
I think there may be the beginnings of a split right now - between the Democrats and some goddamned actual Socialists. I hope i'm wrong.
I'm hoping Sanders' supporters are the left's equivalent of Paul's in 2008/12, mostly disaffected youngsters who really can't be trusted to show up in November. Judging the polls of millennial economic preferences, these people really don't seem to understand much about economics...
No - I think two dominant parties is the consistent thing we'll continue to see, but I've been predicting a re-alignment ever since the Republicans ditched "freedom-loving" for "compassionate" (i.e. roughly the 2000 campaign).
Communism isn't strong enough to hold together the Republican coalition anymore. On the other side, the different groups under the Democratic umbrella are working more and more at cross purposes as "liberals" have turned into "Progressives," which are the opposite of liberals - i.e. "Progress" is more important than "Freedom," but as people realize they don't all agree on what the word "Progress" means, freedom starts to look attractive again.
In short, hard to say what the two parties will look like in 2036, but I'll bet that there will still be two.
This.
The only thing that will change are which dog-whistles work for which party.
I have to suspect Kasich's timing on this - waiting until after Cruz dropped out before he folded - is because Kasich, like all good Republicans, hated Cruz more than he hated Trump. He stayed in as long as he did just to fuck up Cruz's chances of fucking up Trump's chances. (Not that Cruz wasn't doing a perfectly good enough job of fucking up his chances all on his own.)
Exactly. Kasich's work is now done. Cruz is finished. This tells you all you need to know about who the GOP insiders truly hated and feared - it wasn't Trump.
Maybe, but I think it's really just stubborn pride.
From what I've heard about Kasich, he's a pretty arrogant guy.
Well, he is running for president. That requires an inordinate amount of arrogance.
Maybe he thinks the Republican party of 2020 will be like it was in the past and Kaisch is trying to set himself up as it being his turn next?
Ya. That was my first thought too. Fuck him, and all the other unprincipled GOPers.
Good fucking riddance and only about two months too late. What kind of megalomaniacal turd would hold out this long with ~7% of the vote is beyond me. I could maybe understand if he was some kind of Quixotic message candidate with some radical ideas, but Kasich is about as milquetoast of a Midwestern Republican as they come. Good job bringing us one step closer to a Trump presidency, asshole.
He could have won a general election. Blame Trump voters for Trump.
Cop shoots cat that is later determined to have been barely injured:
http://www.my9nj.com/chasing-news/136578157-story
Cats are pretty good judges of character. It probably hissed at him and he feared for his life.
Not to be a cop-apologist, but a most of a cat's life is spent making furtive movements.
Fuck that pig.
I've had unpleasant thoughts of cops shooting my cats but then I came to my senses and realized "nah, they would never do that".
My brother once accidentally backed over a cat and broke its back so he decided to shoot it to put it out of its misery. I don't know how tiny a cat's brain is but he shot that thing several times in the head at near-point-blank range with (IIRC) a .32 and the damn thing still kept yowling and hissing at him and just wouldn't die. Or maybe cats yowling and hissing abilities operate independently of them having a brain, I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit.
Don't you know cats have 9 lives?
You brother would need to shoot it 10 times to get the job done.
It's a bit gruesome, but for small animals, smashing their head with a rock is usually the best way to put them out of their misery in my experience. If the brain is goo, they aren't feeling anything.
Since when were cops authorized to shoot injured animals on the street?
Depends on where you're at. A lot of rural police/sheriffs end up doing some animal control functions.
Sure, in a rural situation if a large animal vet requested I shoot a horse or something once it's been determined its condition is terminal. Seems strange that a cop sees a cat with an owie and decides to terminate on the spot.
Local law allows for police to euthanize an animal once two people have agreed that the severity of the injury warrants it.
WTF? Why does the law call out cops at all? Is there some magic conferred by a badge that makes cops authorities on animal injuries?
magic conferred by a badge that makes cops authorities on animal injuries?
Yes, it's called the Union.
So liberal media is now writing articles explaining how Trump can't beat Clinton.
I am so looking forward to the first debate when Trump lets loose on Clinton and remarks on how her small hands means she has a small dick.
John Kasich: Mission Accomplished
Boy, someone on the NPR breakdown this morning mentioned Trump's crossover appeal with some Sanders voters and one of the commentators got pretty huffy about the insinuation. Unfortunately, with all the crosstalk, I couldn't tell if the woman who got pissed off was the one who NPR disclosed (at the beginning of the segment) that her husband worked for the Sanders campaign but assured she remained "unaffiliated".
There is a lot more overlap than either side would care to admit.
That may have been the woman I heard on NPR this morning.
The one I heard was huffing about how "dangerously" unqualified Trump was to be president.
Of course he IS unqualified - but no more so than Sanders or Hillary. Neither of the Dem candidates have any greater grasp of reality - or the truth - than Trump.
She also said that Sanders at least realized that there was a "role for government".
Yeah - a 100% role.
