U.S. Sending More Troops to Iraq, British Airliner Hits Drone, Supreme Court Hears Deportation Policy Arguments: P.M. Links

- The Supreme Court seemed sharply divided today during arguments as to whether the president has the authority to defer the deportation of immigrants in the United States illegally.
- Also today the Supreme Court declined to hear a copyright case against Google's effort to scan in books for people to read and access online. It leaves in place a ruling in favor of Google.

Democrats in California allow non-affiliated voters to vote in their primary. By declaring themselves members of the American Independent Party, they inadvertently joined a third party instead.

A student was removed from a Southwest Airlines flight apparently for speaking Arabic while sitting in his seat on the plane.
HE COULD HAVE BEEN SAYING BOMB.
Is that one "durka" or two?
Durka Durka Allah jihad durka durka
Listen, if he didn't want to be treated like a thug terrorist, then he shouldn't have been talking in his phone like a terrorist.
Wore his pants hat all baggy and shit too.
I hear that's the style.
Hello.
I guess he is not free to move about the country?
According to NPR, he was discussing ISIS and terrorism when the woman started staring at him.
At that point in the story, I realized that the woman probably knew enough Arabic to recognize he was talking about ISIS and terrorism.
Ya know, jabbering about ISIS and terrorism in Arabic WHILE YOU ARE SITTING ON A PLANE might just have, what's the term? "Consequences". You know. The foreseeable kind.
"Jabbering"? I think you meant "Jabbar-ing.."?
More zones where speech is prohibited for our own safety! Let's celebrate!
The U.S. is sending 200 additional troops to Iraq, bringing the total number of American military forces there up to 4,087.
How many troops does it take to take down a mission accomplished banner?
How many troops does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
How many legions for Ctesiphon before we count it among our provinces?
-Trajan
The world may never know?
How many troops can be in Iraq while Obama can still claim he ended the war in Iraq?
How many troops can be in Iraq until the entire continent capsizes?
Iraq technically cannot flip over because it's not an island, duh!
....something something BOOOOOOSH!!!!!!111!!!111!!!
Yeah, libertarians like you were just fine with killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis when it was done under a Republican. Your GWB apologia is sickening. Obama didn't start the Iraq War-- he's the one trying to clean up his predecessor's colossal and murderous errors.
Citation needed, fucker.
Projection, n., the act of attributing to others the emotional failings you see in yourself

OMGZ!!!!11!!! Your totes rtite its like, whoa, i actually love when presidents lie about stupid and unwinnable quagmires becuz actually i hate all moozlums But im such a raceist that my hatred for teh presidint Obama is even fiercier!!!
It's like, most ppl just saw a comment mocking Obama apologists, but you saw into my soul !111!!
Apparently, Reason was such an apologist for Bush that it couldn't come up with "Ten Reasons to Fire George W. Bush".
Yeah, libertarians like you were just fine with killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis when it was done under a Republican.
Actually, most of Obama's critics are unhappy because not killing enough Iraqis/Syrians/Libyans/Jawas.
Hillary, for one, seems to think we need policies to start killing off lots more Syrians. But why would stormtroopers just be out slaughtering Jawas unless...?!?!?
Yeah, that's right. And Hillary is more Democrat than any (ahem) socialist I see around.
Bush: Mission Accomplished
...but it wasn't
Obama: Iraq war ended.
...but it wasn't
Sorry, but I can't help myself:
The "Mission Accomplished" banner was for the ship, which was returning from a tour in the Gulf. The ship had, indeed accomplished its mission.
It wasn't a victory lap for the entire war. I don't recall if Bush and his inept PR crew tried to pitch it as such. But, like the "plastic turkey" kerfuffle of the same vintage, it quickly became a falsified attack piece on Bush.
Who didn't lack for things he should have been attacked for. But bucking up the morale of the troops was not one of them.
+1 Bar Code Scanners for his Dad
I'm starting to think that you literally do not understand that there exist ways to engage and debate with people that do not involve making things up and lying.
I'm going to have to peruse AS' posts from now on to see if a trace of honesty ever creeps in.
The POS is not even worth responding to.
Yep, you totally got us. None of us were against the Iraq war until January 2009.
Clean up those errors by continuing to make them?
How many troops were there in 2006?
Still Hopin for Change, bitch.
Irrelevant. In 2006 we were still fighting in Iraq.
The question is, how many are there now, after we have "withdrawn".
More than 0.
Uh, and here's the link:
City of Vancouver looks to buy homes and sell them at discount
Didn't read but they plan to buy high sell low?
It's the housing bubble and impending student loan bubble rolled into one. What could go wrong?
The world may never know?
if only there was evidence of what can occur when govt gets involved in the home-buying game.
From what I remember, the Great Depression totally ends and everyone gets a pony.
"It would then turn around and sell those units to buyers for a discounted price ? a price that would take into consideration the city's share in ownership."
Why don't they just come out and say what they're trying to say? I can't even figure it out.
"The city will pay 20% of the purchase price of some homes, provided the homebuyers have no history of home ownership and no evidence of being able to pay even the remaining mortgage."
A 20% reduction in the mortgage itself isn't a 20% reduction in mortgage payments, because you still have to cover insurance and taxes. You ought to be able to do without mortgage insurance (usually not mandatory with 20% down), although if I was a lender I would insist on not waiving it in these cases.
So, this will probably reduce the monthly nut by 10 - 15%. I wonder how often that will be the difference between the buyer keeping up with payments.
Sure they're losing money on every house, but they'll make up for it in volume.
What happens when the people are unable to make the payments?
The world may never know?
Most likely, their co-signer will make the payments?
Ask commie kid.
They should make sure the creditor, who entered into this corrupt bargain, gets every penny at the expense of the 30 year old couple looking to get into a starter home.
Since the 30 year old couple paid for the home with someone else's money...probably.
Am I supposed to feel sorry for 30 year old couples now? At what age can I start expecting people to be responsible for their actions?
I agree. Let's start holding bank presidents responsible for their actions.
The bank president, who held a gun to that 30 yr old couple's head.
Let's start holding bank presidents responsible for their actions.
Clinton may not be a bank president, but she's traded as much money and influence as any of them. What about her?
Who's "us"?
If it's the bank president's boss and customers, then by all means. I have no particular love for CEOs that such at their jobs. But if they aren't playing with my money, then it's not really my problem.
If "us" is "citizens", then show me what laws they broke, and then we can talk.
If "us" is "citizens", then show me what laws they broke, and then we can talk.
If the "case" against Exxon is anything to go by, the answer is probably "fraud". They failed to properly inform "the public" that they're a cabal of shadowy moneygrubbers in service to International Jewry banks are neither charities nor vaults.
Deal.
If you take out a loan that you can't afford - suck it up and accept that you may lose your shit and have to do with less while you get your shit together.
If you give out a risky loan and lose - suck it up and accept that you aren't getting that money back.
I'm good with that.
In this case, the creditor would be the government.
Let's start holding bank presidents responsible for their actions.
Every time a bank president personally defrauds someone into taking on a mortgage they can't afford, I agree they should go to jail.
The creditor in this case is the city.
"They should make sure the creditor, who entered into this corrupt bargain, gets every penny at the expense of the 30 year old couple looking to get into a starter home"
Yes, unless they hold a gun to that couple's heads to make them sign for the loan.
You may not be familiar with the concept, it's called responsibility.
Of course, we already have a remedy for people who can't afford to pay their loans: it's called bankruptcy. Also, most creditors would rather take some money than none, so debt restructuring short of bankruptcy is quite common.
This bizarro world where people are held shackled in chains and forced to pay every last penny of monstrous debts with usurious interest doesn't exist.
Except when it's the government trying to get the money.
A British Airways passenger plane landing at Heathrow in London appears to have struck a drone while approaching the airport but was not damaged.
Really? A three pound piece of plastic didn't bring down an airliner.
That's right and all that pants-shitting will just stop. Hahahaha.
Ingest into one of the turbofans and it might not be so funny.
Ingest into one of the turbofans and it might not be so funny.
How big a drone we talking again? Don't think a 777 would fit.
They can scoop up a large bird, bones and all, and all you get is an extra inspection scheduled on landing.
Birds are notorious for their titanium skeletons. Ingest enough and you get to go swimming in the Hudson. Why do you think they do FOD sweeps and worry about local flocks?
People apparently don't like to think about airport/airbase operations. Magic happens and aluminum tubes take to the air.
Right. A single bird can damage a turbine engine enough to make it eventually fly apart. Drones have metal parts.
Birds are notorious for their titanium skeletons. Ingest enough and you get to go swimming in the Hudson. Why do you think they do FOD sweeps and worry about local flocks?
Modern turbofans are usually tested/rated via frozen grocery store chickens shot into running test-stand engines. They can survive bird-strikes.
The danger is in plurals - birds, flocks. Nobody tests turbofans with something like fifty frozen chickens at once (though Youtube-gone-viral hits for such test might pay for it).
I thought it was frozen turkeys, but regardless, this is true.
I don't think anyone knows the answer to this, but how many birds did the Sullenberger aircraft suck up? It doesn't have to be that many to make your life difficult, despite the testing they do.
FOD walks aren't done for the health of airmen.
"FOD walks aren't done for the health of airmen."
If a single bird could bring down an airliner because it got ingested in the engine there'd be no commercial aviation at all. It would simply be too dangerous.
Drones are built with plastic. Lot's and lots of plastic. Getting one in your engine is going to require an inspection for certain - its not going to bring you down any more than getting a bird in would.
And FOD walks are done for the health of the airmen as well as the aircraft - at least in the Navy. You DO NOT want the exhaust off a jet to kick up a loose tool or fastener and fling it across the flight deck into your face.
" fling it ... ...into your face." is putting it mildly.
Embed it in your cranium is probably more apt.
Not frozen.
As god is my witness, I thought drones could dodge airliners.
The drones are hitting the pavement like bags of wet cement!
Drones have titanium skeletons?
The ones I've seen are mostly plastic monocoque. Plastic load bearing body, plastic rotors, plastic circuit boards.
Plus, at the speed those turbos spin, I don't know that it makes much difference what hits them (up to a point, of course, but I would expect that point to be well north of the delta between a bird and a drone).
My drone has been in the shop for a couple weeks. My 3 pound piece of plastic didn't do much to the tree either.
The wind took my last one from me. I hope wherever it is, it's enjoying its freedom. The next one will have to have GPS.
Phantom 3, bro.
I think the bigger issue is ingesting a three pound drone in an engine.
Yes, we all know this.
Apparently not.
yeah, yeah. We all know what happened when Sebulba tossed that power coupling into Ben Quadinaros pod racer engine. But that's a movie.
And barely even that.
A three pound piece of plastic ingested into the engine might throw a turbine blade or five. Which is usually a bad day at the office for the aircrew.
Evidently, refresh is my friend and I should use my friend more often.
No, it did not. That does not mean whoever was flying that drone was not an irresponsible moron.
Irrespective of your views on how much damage a drone could do - you'd have to be *trying* in order to get a collision. Its not like an airliner is zigging and zagging and moving unpredictably.
Definitely irresponsible.
I'm not so sure?. get a little too close and it'll suck you in.
You still have to be in the flight path for that to happen. There is no way for anyone to be operating a drone that close to an airport runway approach for it not to be something recklessly stupid or malevolent.
"Simulation of 8 lb drone being ingested by a jet engine" (the article explains they chose 8 lb because that's the size postal/delivery services would use to deliver packages and it's capable of reaching higher altitudes).
What's the most dangerous?
Ignore that link and use this better one instead.
LiPo battery packs?
They're using Polonium in their batteries?
(the article explains they chose 8 lb because that's the size postal/delivery services would use to deliver packages and it's capable of reaching higher altitudes)
Hmmmm..... So you're saying if I check the airport schedules and time the delivery of my "gotta have them precisely at 4:18" Acme Big Ol' Bucket of Bolts and Barbed Wire from Amazon just right I might be able to take down an aircraft?
VSB reminds students 4/20 is not a day off
That means it's ok to come in high as a kite. /derpy school associalist superignorant
Drugs are bad, m'kay?
You know who else celebrated 4/20 even on schooldays?
Klara and Alois?
The Reason Staff?
Harold and Kumar?
An, erm, friend of mine?
Dylan Klebold?
The BBC thinks that opposing government power and having problems with the EU are signs that you're a latent fascist.
"Around 50% 'hold authoritarian views'"
"The study - shared with BBC Radio 4's Today programme - measured the sentiment by assessing respondents' ideological sympathy for the market and rolling back the state; a "strong and tough" foreign policy; a negative emotional response to immigration; a critical attitude to human rights and disapproval of the European Union."
Everyone knows supporting the free exchange of goods is WAY more authoritarian than wanting government nationalization and widescale redistribution by bureaucratic dictate.
But supporting Sharia law or thinking gays should be stoned is just a reasonable cultural difference.
I think EVERYBODY should be stoned, at least once in their lives. Live a little!
I'm just going to say it: I don't enjoy pot.
I'm sorry if I've failed my fellow libertarians. All I have left are Mexicans and ass sex.
Two outta three ain't baaaadddd...
Is it because blacks smoke it?
Nice.
I don't either. I was a daily smoker in my early 20s but now it gives me paranoia and anxiety every time.
It will be interesting to see if it still does after its legalized.
You don't have to smoke the blunts like the blacks, put it in your Irish clay pub pipe.
Ass sex seems like something that would be unpleasant for both participants.
Same, but then again I don't exist.
A reasonable cultural difference that native Britons should be more then willing to adapt to and accommodate because otherwise they are racists, and no better then Hitler.
Just imagine what they think of American libertarians.
See, BBC has a problem with the 'latent' part, not the 'fascist'.
The Supreme Court seemed sharply divided today during arguments as to whether the president has the authority to defer the deportation of immigrants in the United States illegally.
I can't imagine along what lines.
Teddy surveyed the city from a darkened rooftop, the city he had sworn to protect. It had been a quiet night, unusually quiet. He knew from bitter experience that the peace would never hold.
His erection twitched and curved toward the northeast. Teddy was on the move before her scream rang out. He covered the two blocks in a flash and landed beside a woman sprawled in the filth of an alley.
"What's the trouble, ma'am?" he asked while pulling her roughly to her feet. She was beautiful, blonde and stacked like a cord of firewood.
"That man?" she started. She broke off when she saw him in the yellow light of the alley and gaped at his skintight uniform, his mask, his stubby erection poking through a hole in the front. He shook her like a terrier with a rat it wanted to kill.
"Speak, woman! I'm her to help you," he roared.
"That man stole my bag of dildos!" She pointed at the back of a man fleeing down the alley.
"Dildos? What are you doing with dildos?" he demanded. Teddy thought he had freed the city from the scourge of artificial genital manipulation devices years ago.
"They're medicinal!" the woman insisted. "I have a prescription!"
"What kind of doctor would prescribe whore wands? They don't let whores be doctors!" he thundered.
"Are you going to help me or not?" she asked.
Teddy pressed in close. "Oh, I'll get your twat rods back. I'll trace them back to your whore doctor and I'll get him too." She could feel his hot breath on her face and his erection brushed against her.
"Don't touch it!" he screamed. "Only I touch it!"
Teddy threw her back in the puddle of muck he found her and took to the air, a tremendous blast of pure seminal energy pouring from his member holding him aloft. He quickly overtook the dildo thief and landed in front of him on a busy sidewalk.
"Halt!" he intoned. "Give me the clit buzzers and I won't hurt you!"
"I know you," the purloiner of perverted pleasure said. "You're The Jackker! These are mine. I need them for my butt. Stay away from me or I'll kick you in the choad!"
purloiner of perverted pleasure
Poetry.
"My choad is more powerful than you can possibly imagine," Teddy growled, advancing on the criminal scum. "Put the pussy plungers down or I'll make sure you never touch yourself ever again."
The thief swung the bag of dildos. Teddy swatted it aside, scattering the tremblers across along the street when the bag burst. With three masterful frottage thrusts the thief lay bleeding on the stinking asphalt.
Teddy stood over the prone ass player and ejaculated on him with a minimum of efficient strokes. A number of onlookers had gathered, drawn to the erotic charge of violence and snapped pictures with their cellphones as steam rose dramatically from the semen soaked cretin.
The Jackker strode purposefully around the crowd, his erection bobbing, and crushed the dildos that were strewn on the sidewalk before they could tempt the innocent citizens of Cruz City. He smiled and waved as the flashes of their cameras bombarded him.
"Touch it!" they screamed. "Touch it for us!"
I am once again humbled and repulsed by your literary gift, sir. The Pulitzers made a mistake in not choosing you.
I feel kind of sick.
That's how you're supposed to feel when exposed to Sugar's work.
The Jackker and the Case of the Dong Throng Gone Wrong
In this issue, the Jackker finds that Cruz City's sanctity has been penetrated yet again with illicit martial aids...
Let me know if you need someone to write up teasers for you. I think doing it actually helps with the nausea.
Dick teasers?
Is it possible to be *too* perverted? Click here and see, the answer may surprise you!
I'm in awe of the euphemisms, the many many euphemisms, for dildo.
Excellent. [wipes tear] Thanks, Sug.
And yet you were snubbed in the Pulitzer Prize selections again.
My colon just died a good bit more reading this. Thus, reading this shit will kill me in shit.
Dalrock: A funny thing happened on the way to the matriarchy.
"How do we destroy the family?" she came back.
"By destroying the American Patriarch," they cried exuberantly.
"And how do we destroy the American Patriarch?" she replied.
"By taking away his power!"
"How do we do that?"
"By destroying monogamy!" they shouted.
"How can we destroy monogamy?"
Their answer left me dumbstruck, breathless, disbelieving my ears. Was I on planet earth? Who were these people?
"By promoting promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution and homosexuality!" they resounded.
Sugarfree's is better
"Better" is not the right word.
The Obamessiah got us out of Iraq. My Obot friends told me so. I guess this will be yet another thing that they're not allowed to talk about.
200 soldiers accidentally left their wallets behind.
So that's where El Segundo is.
Thousands of people in California will not be able to vote in the state's Democratic primary because they registered (probably accidentally) as belonging to the "American Independent Party" instead of as unaffiliated independents.
In other news, Pat Buchanan is running for president in California in the American Independent Party.
that sounds like people being too stupid to vote.
Bingo. I cry no tears for people too stupid to take 12 minutes to learn to vote and properly register.
Are people really dumb enough to register in the "American Independent Party" when they really don't want to be registered in any party at all?
Wait, I shouldn't ask that question.
Primaries should be closed, anyway.
Apparently so. I'd be interested to see exactly how it was phrased. Was the checkbox labelled "independent," "Independent" or "American Independent Party"?
Probably "American Independent" as the "Party" would be implied by the wording of the question.
Choose your party:
Democratic
Republican
Libertarian
Independent
Decline to State
"Decline to state" is what you have to check to be an independent.
That's actually pretty fucked up. And it's the first time I've ever seen the D's and R's get outdone in gaming the system. Bravo, AIP!
Look. How were they supposed to know third parties are even a thing? I only found out by the most amazing of coincidences and the rest of you are just socks.
Not all of us. Some of us are federal agents who are simply monitoring this board for threatening mentions of woodchippers.
I can't understand why this is an issue of concern for the Democrat primary - if these people are too stupid to know how to vote aren't they clearly Republicans? Now if you can find some some sort of fraud attached to the mis-registration then we can talk about the evil party.
if these people are too stupid to know how to vote aren't they clearly Republicans
Don't cross the streams, Jerryskids. Republicans are the stupid ones, but Democrats will be suppressed at the polls if there is anything approaching a test of intelligence (see: 2000 election, Florida) or even just basic civics (see: opposition to voter identification). Everybody knows this.
Democrats (and Libertarians) allow Decline to State voter to vote in their primary. To do so, you have to request a Democratic (or Libertarian) ballot.
And those are the independents Gillespie and Welch think are exemplars if the libertarian moment.
The Pulitzer Prizes were announced for 2016, the 100th anniversary of the awards. Among the winners were the Los Angeles Times for their coverage of the San Bernardino shootings, The Washington Post for its coverage of police shootings, and the musical Hamilton.
Nothing for Rolling Stone?
Nothing for Reason, either, or there would have been 574587284057250 stories about it on H&R.
Reason basically does no journalism since Balko left so this isn't surprising.
#BringbackourBalko

Aren't there Pulitzers for commentary?
No... That's what the Nobels are for.
Perhaps something in the fiction category?
prizes for fiction require entries to be made into the fiction categories.
Anti-racism activists sure do have a tendency to say things that are incredibly racist
"In her book Black Feminist Thought, Patricia Hill Collins gives a brilliant explanation of how positivism ? a school of thought that values objectivity and provable arguments ? benefits white men the most. She also points out that black feminists and womanists have developed an alternative form of epistemology, or way of understanding knowledge, that she refers to as "black feminist thought."
At risk of oversimplification, black feminist thought centers the lived experiences of marginalized people. It argues that subjectivity is valuable because people's lived experiences are valuable ? because people's spoken truths are, in and of themselves, truths."
Anti-racist feminist claims black women are incapable of objective, rational thought and making provable arguments, somehow fails to notice how misogynistic and racist this is.
It is just a long way of saying "shut up and do what I tell you to do".
If a man says women base arguments on anecdotes and emotion rather than logic, he's a sexist, but if a feminist says the exact same thing, she's written a blockbuster academic book on the subject of black feminist thought.
And gets tenure.
So when a racist busts ant-racists for racism...STACK OVERFLOW ERROR
NERD
Well, there you go.
Well, just how many victim categories can you check off? Hmm?
What the fuck is a womanist?
Do you want to know? Do you really want to know?
So meaningless pseudo-intellectual academic drivel to create useless professorships at taxpayer expense while checking various victim boxes? Got it.
Those aren't women, Tom. Those are womynists.
HEY HEY
HO HO
THIS PENIS PARTY'S GOT TO GO
Don't set out to raze all shrines?you'll frighten men. Enshrine mediocrity?and the shrines are razed.
Politically correct people have explicitly told me not to use logic. In terms of core philosophy, they are no different from fundamentalists.
This sort of shit does tons of damage to the people they're supposedly trying to 'help.' If you're taught emotion and 'lived experience' is more important than the ability to actually think about a subject, then that's pretty much going to guarantee you'll be a failure.
Then when you fail because leftists taught you not to think, you can blame capitalism or white supremacy rather than the people who indoctrinated you into a school of anti-thought.
Womanist?
Sounds...kinky. I think. I hope.
The opposite of that.
"It argues that subjectivity is valuable ... because people's spoken truths are, in and of themselves, truths."
"That's right ? because I say Collins is a fucking idiot."
It doesn't work unless your identity categories place you among the elect.
Why is it that the only thing I can think of to relate this to is Mao Zedong Thought.
"positivism ? a school of thought that values objectivity and provable arguments"
Positivism is more than that, it's a cargo-cult which assigns sacral status to its idea of "science." And the most famous positivist was Auguste Comte, who was heavily influenced by the socialist Saint-Simon and who proposed replacing the world's religions with a "religion of humanity."
Catholics "value[] objectivity and provable arguments" but they openly avow what positivists also believe but deny verbally - that there are some truths which are found *outside* the narrowly-defined bounds of a scientific method.
How did you arrive at the knowledge that objectivity and provable arguments are valuable? How do you know that "valuable" is a meaningful concept?" Cardinal Newman said knowledge was inherently good, like health, but could you prove him right scientifically?
So positivism, if applied according to its own terms, undermines and destroys itself, which is why positivists don't actually believe it.
The early 20th Century Catholic Encyclopedia takes a few whacks at positivism
Cardinal Newman explains that knowledge is an end in itself - can a positivist explain it?
Positivism sounds like Latin theology.
No, the opposite.
Well, this seems
Ike a legitimate use of California taxpayer money.
I'm sure they'll demand more fiscal responsibility from their fearless one-party legislature.
"....to hide bad publicity on Google when people searched on the university name and the name of its chancellor, Linda Katehi"
And there it is.
Ironically, you can rearrange the letters in her name to spell "Aha, linked it!"
I thought it was going to be something about the Interstate highway system.
I could link shit on that all day. Or the HSR scam. Or the pension system. Or the water scheme. Or a million other fucked up boondoggles that state government fucks it's people on.
Just paid quarterlies to the clueless vipers in Sacto - this awesome weather is starting to get awfully fucking expensive...
Team Obama is setting us up for another housing-market collapse
...As Paul Sperry recently noted in The Post, Team Obama has pushed mortgage lenders to offer home loans to folks with shaky credit, setting up conditions for another housing-market collapse.
Wasn't the last one bad enough?
Credit scores of approved borrowers, for example, have been trending down, even as their debt levels have grown.
The Federal Housing Administration and government-sponsored "independent" lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have been demanding lower credit standards ? just as the feds did starting under President Bill Clinton, in pursuit of the same "affordable housing" goal....
I really don't think they are trying to destroy the country. I think they really are that stupid.
you give them too much credit.
I don't give them any credit. I think they are morons.

The Left Is Coming for You Next
...New York's attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, is taking a similar approach. He isn't sure what law Exxon has broken, but he promises to find one, making different accusations and arguments as the venue demands. Barack Obama's so-called Justice Department is considering filing a case of its own.
Despite the insistence of Democrats in positions of power, this is not a "fraud" investigation. There has been no credible case made ? none whatsoever ? that any fraud has been committed.
We should, while it is permitted, be as plain as possible about what is happening here: This is an act of obvious, gross, and indefensible political suppression, with two ends: One is riling up young, white, middle-income progressives before the 2016 election (in which California's Democratic attorney general, Kamala Harris, is a Senate candidate), voters who care a great deal about global warming and not very much about freedom of speech; the second is financial, in that Exxon, the second most valuable firm on Earth by market capitalization, has a great deal of money, and may be bullied into a settlement that will fund a great deal of Democratic activism for years to come.
He isn't sure what law Exxon has broken, but he promises to find one
Nope, no prejudice there.
Also, you know who else promised "if you find me the man, I'll find you the crime"?
Mike Hammer?

Dr. Ferris while monologueing to Hank Rearden. "Pass so many vague laws so that anyone can be guilty of anything" is how it goes, I think.
Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, p 436
"Did you really think that we want all those laws to be observed?" said Dr. Ferris [the government representative]. "We want them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against ? then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power & we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, & you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule INNOCENT men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, where there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted ? & then you create a nation of law-breakers ? you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Rearden [the industrialist], that's the game, & once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with.

Scientific Regress
...Paradoxically, the situation is actually made worse by the fact that a promising connection is often studied by several independent teams. To see why, suppose that three groups of researchers are studying a phenomenon, and when all the data are analyzed, one group announces that it has discovered a connection, but the other two find nothing of note. Assuming that all the tests involved have a high statistical power, the lone positive finding is almost certainly the spurious one. However, when it comes time to report these findings, what happens? The teams that found a negative result may not even bother to write up their non-discovery. After all, a report that a fanciful connection probably isn't true is not the stuff of which scientific prizes, grant money, and tenure decisions are made.
And even if they did write it up, it probably wouldn't be accepted for publication. Journals are in competition with one another for attention and "impact factor," and are always more eager to report a new, exciting finding than a killjoy failure to find an association. In fact, both of these effects can be quantified. Since the majority of all investigated hypotheses are false, if positive and negative evidence were written up and accepted for publication in equal proportions, then the majority of articles in scientific journals should report no findings. When tallies are actually made, though, the precise opposite turns out to be true: Nearly every published scientific article reports the presence of an association. There must be massive bias at work.
Ioannidis's argument would be potent even if all scientists were angels motivated by the best of intentions, but when the human element is considered, the picture becomes truly dismal. Scientists have long been aware of something euphemistically called the "experimenter effect": the curious fact that when a phenomenon is investigated by a researcher who happens to believe in the phenomenon, it is far more likely to be detected. Much of the effect can likely be explained by researchers unconsciously giving hints or suggestions to their human or animal subjects, perhaps in something as subtle as body language or tone of voice. Even those with the best of intentions have been caught fudging measurements, or making small errors in rounding or in statistical analysis that happen to give a more favorable result. Very often, this is just the result of an honest statistical error that leads to a desirable outcome, and therefore it isn't checked as deliberately as it might have been had it pointed in the opposite direction....
...What they do not mention is that once an entire field has been created?with careers, funding, appointments, and prestige all premised upon an experimental result which was utterly false due either to fraud or to plain bad luck?pointing this fact out is not likely to be very popular. Peer review switches from merely useless to actively harmful. It may be ineffective at keeping papers with analytic or methodological flaws from being published, but it can be deadly effective at suppressing criticism of a dominant research paradigm. Even if a critic is able to get his work published, pointing out that the house you've built together is situated over a chasm will not endear him to his colleagues or, more importantly, to his mentors and patrons....
TL;DR
This is why I usually stick to PUA articles.
Nobody reads those either.
I read them, but only because I like such hilarious satire.
...those PUA articles are satire, right?
TL;DR
I enjoyed your series of quote, fwiw.
The tl;dr is people are starting to catch on that "A new study shows...." is invariably followed by bullshit. Sciencing is broken - for a variety of reasons - and it needs fixing.
Some of us stop at the 'Longtorso, J.
from the article
To be fair, several of these issues were not taken as gospel when they were published. I study a lot about particle physics and cosmology and I can't think of one single physicist or cosmologist that wasn't saying "need more evidence" or "need to reproduce experiment" or even "learn to count" when some experimentalists claimed that their results indicated FTL neutrinos and gravitational waves.
I was at McGill when the BICEP2 results were published and knew people on the competing teams. Not one of them accepted it at face value. And the BICEP team got a lot of criticism within the field for how they handled it.
And the superluminal neutrino announcement was always presented as "this is the result we get and we aren't sure what to make of it, but we are putting it out there so people can help us figure it out".
But yes, the initial results always get more fanfare in popular media. But that's true of anything and not representative of how people in these fields react.
I guess obstruction of justice and a stonewalling police force can fucking pay off. Especially when you're a cop that murders an unarmed man in cold blood and his buddies cover its for a few years.
Motherfucker. I hope the judge refuses the plea and sentencing deal. This cocksucker needs to go to prison for the rest of his life.
Twelve months, ten of which he'll actually serve, and the silver lining is that he'll be a convicted felon and not be able to work on the force again. We have to content ourselves with the fact that a murderer won't be given a gun and a badge again. Priorities, I guess.
That's funny, they doctored the photo to make the victim look white.
Everyone knows that the cops handle white suspects with kid gloves.
And don't tell me #alllivesmatter, because that's just racist.

So can we please stop panicking about drones and airliners?
Lulz. You funny, Mammy.
Alternate headline: Drone flown into enormous airplane destroyed by laws of physics.
Or, "Drone Strikes 'Plane. No damage, but experts warn not to get complacent"
Last article I saw said they 'thought it was' a drone.
How would they even know?

'What was that?'
'What?'
'That noise.'
'I dunno, maybe we hit a drone?'

The Pulitzer Prizes were announced for 2016, the 100th anniversary of the awards. Among the winners were ... the musical Hamilton.
Having seen 1776, is this worth my time?
I am pretty sure it sucks.
Sit down John, sit down John, for God's sake John, SIT DOWN!
Read Ron Chernow's biography of Hamilton instead. Comprehensive and well-researched book and, if I'm not mistaken, the primary source material for the musical.
So the Sympathizer won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Angry Chinese construction workers duel with bulldozers
BEIJING (AP) ? Police in northern China say an argument between construction workers escalated into a demolition derby-style clash of heavy machinery that left at least two bulldozers flipped over in a street.
In online video taken Saturday, several bulldozers are seen ramming each other while passenger cars scurry away from the cloud of dust.
Marxist tries to explain free speech, basically advocates Gulags.
For the classical liberal, the wealthy media mogul who owns newspapers and TV stations has the same free speech rights as the janitor who cleans his office. For Marxists, this absurdity reveals a fatal flaw at the core of liberal politics: it's not possible to realize ideals of democratic self-rule, freedom and equality within a system based on radical class inequality.
For Marxists, on the other hand, freedom of expression is not a free-floating abstraction?it's a key aspect of the radical democratic vision of building a society free of oppression and exploitation. Marxists value free speech because they are committed to building a society where all can decide matters of public concern democratically, as genuine equals. Thus, the Marxist has a consistent way of explaining why speech that aims to dominate or marginalize others should be challenged rather than protected: it is contrary to the very values animating our commitment to free speech in the first place.
Got that? Marxists value "free speech" as long as they like that speech.
So they don't actually value free speech at all, but they're giant pussies who won't admit their undying lust for authoritarianism, even to themselves.
LOL
"What should liberals say about these matters? Chait implies that free speech rights are absolute?any interference whatsoever with the ability of any person or group to express their views is unjustified. But surely he wouldn't accept such a strong view if he thought about the matter more carefully?unless, that is, he would be willing to embrace the consistent (but wildly implausible) view that is unjust to prohibit people from yelling "fire" in a crowded movie theater."
Hilarious. He just approvingly quoted Oliver Wendell Holmes from that time Oliver Wendell Holmes voted to throw socialists in prison for opposing what they saw as an unjust war. What an idiot.

Again, I suspect they know this, but they don't care. It's a game. You move the ball forward, and when you're in charge, you murder people. Rinse, repeat.
Lenin and Mao were pretty open about how the wreckers and Kulaks deserve to be suppressed.
Oh and Robespierre was pretty big on freedom of speech, as long as supported him.
Good example of this from Mao:
"You are dictatorial." My dear sirs, you are right, that is just what we are. All the experience the Chinese people have accumulated through several decades teaches us to enforce the people's democratic dictatorship, that is, to deprive the reactionaries of the right to speak and let the people alone have that right
Radio Yerevan was asked: Is it true that there is freedom of speech in the Soviet Union the same as there is the USA?
We reply: In principle, yes. In the USA, you can stand in front of the Washington Monument in Washington, DC, and yell, "Down with Reagan!", and you will not be punished. In the Soviet Union, you can stand in the Red Square in Moscow and yell, "Down with Reagan!", and you will not be punished.
I can't even understand what he's trying to say there.
It's possible to say things that will make "marginalized groups" mad or unhappy, therefore the state should be allowed to oppress anyone who says things that state sanctioned identity groups don't like.
Your right to do anything is determined by what economic or racial class you are. That is the heart of Marxism and fascism.
Tyler Zimmer is a visiting assistant professor of philosophy at Northeastern Illinois University.
barf
it's not possible to realize ideals of democratic self-rule, freedom and equality within a system based on radical class inequality.
If this was a country that actually had "class" inequality, they might have a point.
But these historical illiterates don't even know what a class-based society looks like.
Has there been a Reason article on how Hamilton is libertarian and is evidence of the libertarian moment?
Has there been a Winston comment where you weren't a whining little bitch?

Libertarian moment.
Bernie Sanders blasts critics who call his ideas unrealistic: 'Nothing is radical'
Fresh from a whirlwind weekend in which he met the pope and drew his largest-ever crowd at a rally in Brooklyn, Bernie Sanders hit back against a theme that's become central to Hillary Clinton's campaign: He has some great ideas, but when it comes to getting them done, his plans are ? as Larry David put it on "Saturday Night Live" ? nothing more than "yada, yada, yada."
On CNN's "New Day" Monday, one day before New York's primary, Sanders pointed out that he called for raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour from $7.50 more than five years ago.
"Most people thought that was a crazy idea," the Vermont senator said. "Well, guess what. California, New York, Oregon have done it. Why? Because people stood up and fought."

These two things are not contradictory.

Elementary school kids, ages 6-10, arrested for not breaking up a fight
I'd say WTF, but I know better.

Oh, fuck off, Chris.
Seriously. GO FUCK YOURSELF CHRIS. FUCK. YOU.
This story makes me want to punch them out.
They arrested at least one six year old kid for "not breaking up a fight". That is actually a worse nut kick than usual.
Look on the bright side: No one got body slammed which is about the best you can expect when cops go to a school.
I hold assholes like David French indirectly responsible for their constant defense of law enforcement even when they act recklessly and with clear malice.
Seriously. HANDCUFFING 6 SIX YEAR-OLDS? I would fucking LOSE IT. What a piece of shits those 'heroes' are.
Just waiting for some pretend tough on crime cunt conservative women to chine in with their 'those kids weren't brought up right!'
From another article on the subject?
He's 85 to 90% correct, though.
"I have 4 children, 2 of them are adults. I never worried about them getting harassed by police or authority figures. They were taught to be respectful. If a police officer stopped them they were polite and did what was asked, they did not attack the police officer."
You could reasonably ask what the fuck this has to do with the story in question, where none of these kids attacked a police officer or did anything else illegal.
"I have 4 children, 2 of them are adults. I never worried about them getting harassed by molesters. They were taught to be respectful. If a molester stopped them they were polite and did what was asked, they did not attack the molester."
/OMWC approves this message.
Hey, that six-year-old was turning his life around.
Tulpa will be in his bunk.
Tulpa finished half way thru that article.
The students were arrested, accused of not stopping a fight
I had no idea that there was a law requiring adults, much less children, to stop fights.
Wasn't that the entire basis for the Seinfeld finale?

Frankly, I'm apathetic. I can see both sides of the issue when we're talking about sending a person who has spent decades of their life in the United States. Hey, they don't have the proper INS form 22463575854B section 57, clause c-1 card so fuck them. "California minimum wage hike hits L.A. apparel industry: 'The exodus has begun'"
A British Airways passenger plane landing at Heathrow in London appears to have struck a drone while approaching the airport but was not damaged.
Of course it wasn't damaged. The national freakout over drones wreaking havoc in America's airways is way, way overblown.
OK, so - back to the bird strikes and drones.
"Bird strikes are a significant threat to flight safety, and have caused a number of accidents with human casualties.[3] The number of major accidents involving civil aircraft is quite low and it has been estimated that there is only about 1 accident resulting in human death in one billion (109) flying hours.[4] The majority of bird strikes (65%) cause little damage to the aircraft;[5] however the collision is usually fatal to the bird(s) involved."
*This* is what passes for reason. Bird strikes are a significant threat *and* result in one death per billion flying hours with 65% percent of the collisions resulting in 'little damage'.
When your plastic drone starts to approach the size of a motorcycle - then I'll start worrying.
In any case - just keep the damn things away from airports FFS.
