Watch a Black Student Assault White Teen Because His Dreadlocks Are Cultural Appropriation

So much for safe spaces at San Francisco State University.

A San Francisco State University student of color harassed and assaulted a white student earlier this week, accusing him of stealing her culture—because he had dreadlocks.

The encounter took place in the Cesar Chavez Student Center, and was captured on video. The video clearly shows a black female student, identified as Bonita Tindle, confronting a dreadlocks-wearing white male named Cory Goldstein. Tindle is accompanied by a black male: both insist to Goldstein that his dreadlocks are tantamount to cultural appropriation.

Goldstein responds by insisting that his look is Egyptian, and doesn't belong to them. They counter by demanding to know whether he is Egyptian.

"You're saying I can't have a hairstyle because of your culture?" asks Goldstein. "Why?"

"Because it's my culture," asserts Tindle.

Goldstein eventually says, "You know what, girl, you have no right to tell me what I can and cannot wear." He then attempts to leave the area. Tindle grabs his arm and physically restrains him. After being pushed around for a few moments, Goldstein separates himself from Tindle and walks off. The self-proclaimed cultural enforcer then notices that she is being recorded by a third-party, and demands to know why.

"For everyone's safety," says the person shooting the video.

Tindle then appears to attack the cameraman just before the clip ends.

When I first watched this video, I was suspicious that it was staged: It just seems too ridiculous. But Goldstein posted about it on Facebook and said it really happened. "I just got physically assaulted because I have dreadlocks woe," he wrote.

What's more, the campus police responded to the incident, according to a press release:

University police were called to the scene of the incident when it occurred. The two individuals involved in the incident are not San Francisco State University employees. Further, no criminal charges have been pressed at this time to the University's knowledge.

San Francisco State University promotes the rights of the campus community to engage in free speech, but does not condone behavior that impedes the safety or well-being of others.  We are taking the matter seriously and will promptly and thoroughly investigate this incident through applicable University channels, including our campus student conduct procedures.

I don't know whether Goldstein or someone else called the police, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment. If he doesn't want to press charges, that's his choice. But Tindle's thuggish behavior was completely inappropriate, and she deserves plenty of derision—partly for her awful views on cultural appropriation, but mostly because she used violence to back up her opinion.

Given how obsessed universities are with creating safe spaces for students, I'm surprised SFSU isn't taking more decisive action. What good is a safe space, after all, if it does not guarantee actual physical safety?

In any case, shame on Tindle for going full Melissa Click on someone she disagreed with. To borrow a phrase from student-activists, perhaps she needs some mandatory cultural sensitivity training.

What's that bitch doing speaking English.

Also, isn't straightening normally curly hair cultural appropriation?

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

Yes and it's been talked about... a lot. Some black folks look down on the hair-straightening trend.

      1. Night Elf Mohawk   9 years ago

You think they look down on it because it's cultural appropriation? Not so much. Cultural abandonment is more like it.

        1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

Oh yes, absolutely. Sometimes also discussed as 'appropriating the slave culture' which is... the worst thing you can do. I think.

    2. Doctor Whom   9 years ago

It's cultural imperialism against her, not cultural appropriation by her. The argument is a variation on "people of color cannot be racist," which in turn is a variation on "I can do no wrong, and you can do no right."

    3. Trigger Warning   9 years ago

Acting like a cunt is a cultural appropriation!

    4. Slammer   9 years ago

      BONITA better be a Latina

      1. Night Elf Mohawk   9 years ago

        Even then, it's fraud.

      2. Unicorn Abattoir   9 years ago

Especially since it happened in the Cesar Chavez Student Center.

    5. WTF   9 years ago

I'm surprised SFSU isn't taking more decisive action.

Are you? Are you really? Because the university taking more decisive action would be the surprise to me.

      1. WTF   9 years ago

        Fucking blockquote tags!

        1. EMD   9 years ago

Read this as "blockquote fags" which would be ... something, I guess.

            Like faggot cookies?

      2. Muzzled Woodchipper   9 years ago

I'm surprised SFSU isn't taking more decisive action.

Really. This is a white kid who's been accused by a not white kid of liberal heresy at a university in San Francisco. I'm not surprised at all that the admin would ignore it.

A black student cries (wolf) racism and universities protest for weeks. A white student gets attacked for so-called cultural appropriation and nothing happens. This seems perfectly in line with what I expect.

        1. JWW   9 years ago

I'm surprised they haven't punished him (the white kid) yet.

          1. C. S. P. Schofield   9 years ago

They are puniching him. They are allowing him to continue to make an ass of himself by wearing dreadlocks. As a book i readonce on a checkout line put it "Very few people in this world look good in dreadlocks. None of them are white."

            1. Chip Chipperson   9 years ago

Meh. He seems like a decent enough guy, and he handled himself very well in that situation and afterwards. I'll give him a pass on the dreadlocks.

        2. Loki   9 years ago

I'm actually surprised they haven't expelled the white guy. He appropriated her culture, that's got to be at least as bad as rape. He's clearly a rapist. /sarc

          1. wFt   9 years ago

I'm pretty sure that is being considered as we blog.

          2. Suicidy   9 years ago

I should enroll in college for a new degree, get dreadlocks, or at least fake deadlock hair extensions. Then parade around campus with a painfully phony Jamaican accent. until some dumbfuck SJW tries to assault me. Then sue everyone involved, including the university, for a big payday.

            1. Chip Chipperson   9 years ago

If I didn't have a career and responsibilities and a life, I've often thought about re-enrolling in some undergrad program at one of these schools just to be the bane of their existence for a few years and draw attention to all their idiocy. A lawsuit at the end would definitely be a bonus.

The biggest issue is that so many of these kids actually need to come out of school with their degree, so they feel like they can't rock the boat and jeopardize their graduation. But someone who went in with a total IDGAF attitude could really make things tricky for the SJW bullies who run the show.

        3. croaker   9 years ago

Noticed this happened on a campus where concealed carry (or open) is banned.

Try that on a campus that's armed.

    6. Chumby   9 years ago

      Does Ebonics qualify as English?

    7. blondrealist   9 years ago

Yeah - and those clothes she is wearing are cultural appropriation too. She should have some sort of animal skin cover-up on and be barefoot. Depending on the weather, topless might also be more culturally appropriate.

      1. Chip Chipperson   9 years ago

I mean, technically the Vikings had dreadlocks too. He should have speared her with a trident or something.

  2. SusanM   9 years ago

He's actually named Cory. I've made jokes about Trevorfarians but I had no idea I was so close to the mark.

    1. coloraDOOM   9 years ago

    2. Lee G   9 years ago

Let me see if I can sum it up.

I want something to bitch about.

      How's that?

      1. Rhywun   9 years ago

        It's becoming clearer.

      2. wFt   9 years ago

        And it's all YOUR FAULT!

      3. Suicidy   9 years ago

Like everything progtarded, it's a way to manufacture phony victimhood, and then fashion it into a weapon. So they can attack whites. They hate white people.

    3. Tonio   9 years ago

It's the most advanced form of whinerism. It's asserting intellectual property rights over an entire culture, and assigning those rights to people with the "right" genes. Glad this happened. Perhaps incidents like this will make everyone realize how fucked up the SJWs are.

      1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

Perhaps incidents like this will make everyone realize how fucked up the SJWs are.

It's advancing the debate and forcing us to confront uncomfortable truths. Sure, it may be a little over the top, but at least we're finally having a discussion about problematic behavior.

        1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

at least we're finally having a discussion about problematic behavior.

White-person dreads *are* problematic, but not in the sense the young Committee For Social-Virtue and Prevention of Wrongthink-members probably intend.

          1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

            White-person dreads *are* problematic

I was the first to say it, now you're just riding on my coattails.

          2. Suicidy   9 years ago

That punk white kid should be left alone with the exception of some jocks passing by, and making him upside the head and laughing at him.

        2. coloraDOOM   9 years ago

Just not what the SJW would like.

      2. Eternal Blue Sky   9 years ago

"It's asserting intellectual property rights over an entire culture, and assigning those rights to people with the 'right' genes."

At the same time, the assignment of those IP rights is distributed among groups who are not related to the culture, and no IP rights are, of course, assigned to white cultures. That way, under this system, Korean-Americans can and do police Japanese kimonos and bitch at white people who wear it and African Americans with no North African background can complain about white people wearing hairstyles invented by the Egyptians (and a ton of other people, independently, but the Egyptians got there first).

        1. coloraDOOM   9 years ago

That's the other thing. They got there first, but people did the same thing independent of the Egyptians. Same with the pyramids. People all over the world built structures into the sky. Or henna/tattooing. Or alcohol. Far before international trade was even a small operation.

        2. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

Who is doing the policing has nothing to do with who holds the cultural rights under this scheme, however. That Korean-Americans police non-Japanese people wearing kimonos does not mean Korean-Americans think they themselves are allowed to wear kimonos.

          1. Bra Ket   9 years ago

In Asia they have their own version of these silly arguments. Asian cultures involve many of the same things but give them different names. Then they argue over who invented it. Like replacing the "J" in J-pop with a "K". Bam! now it's your culture you're exporting, as opposed to actually importing Japanese culture.

The Korean version of a Kimono is called a Hanbok or something like that.

        3. Pope Jimbo   9 years ago

If it is first past the post, who gets to claim fire and walking upright? I'm guessing walking upright goes to Africans because they have Lucy to prove that we started there. But fire?

          1. DarrenM   9 years ago

            Did Lucy play basketball?

      3. EMD   9 years ago

Who knew Kurosawa was such a cultural chauvinist?

    4. Square = Circle   9 years ago

Originally the complaint about cultural appropriation was tied to things like the first significant jazz figure to get national recognition was Benny Goodman, Elvis got rich and famous ripping off black singers who stayed obscure, the Small Faces taking credit for Willie Dixon's "You Need Lovin'" before Zeppelin turned it into "Whole Lotta Love" and the like.

Irony being that like this white kid with the dreads, they were trying to *celebrate* black American culture, but wound up getting credit for *creating* it.

What's going on in this video is an unwitting parody by someone who doesn't actually understand the issue but wants something to get mad about.

      1. WTF   9 years ago

So, the black musicians appropriated European culture by using guitars?

        1. Square = Circle   9 years ago

No, the Europeans appropriated the guitar from Arabs, who appropriated it from the Indian sitar, who in turn maybe got it from the Greeks (the cithern).

In short, I'm not sure who gets to use guitars, or whether they even have a right to exist.

          1. Square = Circle   9 years ago

I certainly have no idea what to do with John McLaughlan.

            1. IceTrey   9 years ago

You could start by spelling his name correctly, Jon McLaughlin. Funny thing, that's my name too. I never have to worry about Google searches because I'm on page 3 million. 🙂

Have you ever heard some of the original songs that Led Zeppelin ripped off? They were horrible. Zeppelin made the song good. Think Hendrix changing Dylan's All Along the Watchtower times five.

        1. Tom Bombadil   9 years ago

          True to the dat.
I've listened to so many songs that were supposedly the source of Zep's hits and I can barely recognize them as the same song and sure as hell wouldn't listen to them twice.

      3. Rational Exuberance   9 years ago

Most people don't give a fuck about credit or where something comes from. Elvis and Goodman were celebrated because they were great musicians.

Furthermore, they didn't just copy or reproduce, their music and their style added a lot. That's how progress happens.

    6. ebohlman   9 years ago

It's basically the same mentality as "I can't listen to my favorite band any more because kids I don't like have started listening to them". In other words, typical of kids going through puberty. College seems to be the new junior high now.

My suspicion, which I suspect Lenore Skenazy would agree with, is that today's college kids have had their interpersonal interactions parentally micromanaged (playdates, mommy-picked friends, all time structured) for so long that social/emotional development is about that of early tweens from previous generations. The first thing kids do when they're just learning how to interact with others in a non-structured fashion is to divide themselves up into rival cliques. That phase usually passes within a few years, and most of us cringe when we think about what we were like then. What's changed is that this phase has now become part of early adulthood.

      1. ebohlman   9 years ago

Some will point to "race records" and blackface as legitimate examples of "cultural appropriation" harm, but those were bad for different reasons. The race-record problem wasn't that white singers were singing songs by black songwriters; it was that the black songwriters weren't getting paid more than an, er, song for their work while everybody else was making out like bandits. But, of course, to make that argument you have to believe in property rights; if you don't, your explanation of the problem will be nonsensical. Similarly, the problem with blackface was that it was a mechanism for entertainment producers to portray black characters without having to, y'know, pay black performers.

        1. croaker   9 years ago

Because in some places it was illegal to hire black actors.

    7. Eman   9 years ago

it makes so much sense though! he shouldnt wear dreadlocks cuz that's a black thing to do. that's like totally the opposite of being racist

    8. Chip Chipperson   9 years ago

Since actual racism has nearly been eradicated, the grievance industry had to come up with new and innovative ways for people to be racist.

        Now he's gender appropriating too!

        1. Chumby   9 years ago

Next he is going to want his own restroom.

      2. ebohlman   9 years ago

The issue with headdresses is that in most cultures that use them, they're symbols of earned honor; a member of one of those cultures who wore one as a fashion accessory without earning it would be viewed much like we'd view someone who never served in the military using combat decorations as fashion accessories; it dilutes the symbolic value of the symbol, and when it's done by someone outside the culture where it's symbolic, it suggests contempt or indifference toward that culture.

It's not an act of violence; the language of "trauma" and "safety" has no place here. It's not something that should be considered a crime (unless it's being done to misrepresent oneself for personal financial gain), but it is extremely tacky and rude and people for whom those symbols are meaningful have a perfect right to strongly object to it.

        1. Rational Exuberance   9 years ago

it dilutes the symbolic value of the symbol, and when it's done by someone outside the culture where it's symbolic, it suggests contempt or indifference toward that culture.

He wasn't wearing dreadlocks to show contempt for her culture, he was wearing them because they are symbolic to him and his culture.

As for showing "contempt" or "indifference" to other cultures, what is wrong with that? You seem to be starting from the assumption that all cultures are equivalent, but most cultures suck: they result in stagnant, oppressive, violent societies. That's true for Europe, Asia, African and the Americas.

Finally, the "culture" that little Bonita imagines she comes from is a figment of her imagination. Her skin color and fantasies don't make her "African". And the "culture" that she fantasizes about never existed in Africa; it's an artificial construct of the last few decades. African cultures were strongly patriarchal. If she had behaved towards a man like she did in what she believes to be "her culture", she would have been beaten and locked up. That kind of thing is, incidentally, why people can and should show contempt towards that culture.

Of course, dreadlocks were never much of a cultural symbol among the tens of thousands of distinct cultures of Africa; they were primarily associated with the Near East and India, and arguably Northern Europeans.

          1. Suicidy   9 years ago

Actually, by the looks of him, he looked in the mirror one day and said to himself "I know I'm a little squid douchebag, but the effect is somehow incomplete. How can I be a complete and utter douchebag?" Then he likely said to himself "I know! Shitty dreadlocks! And it will probably piss of my folks too!" And by the video, you know the rest.

        2. Azathoth!!   9 years ago

Well then maybe the people from the "cultures that use them" should stop making and selling replicas their "symbols of earned honor" to all and sundry.

Or maybe they're self aware enough to know that these are just like toy military gear or replica military gear and the SJW assholes who've decided that they know better than the oppressed masses and will bully people for them should shut the fuck up.

And maybe those of us with brains should try to do our damnedest to not internalize their bullshit and give it legitimacy by suggesting that it has any value whatsoever.

    2. Mitsima   9 years ago

Definitely. At first I thought, maybe he was actually being harassed, then I saw his side of the story video and the kid just oozes SJW. So, yeah, enjoyable to watch. Eat you filthy little cannibals, eat your fill.

    5. carol   9 years ago

Not to pick at nits but dreads didn't originate in Egypt. They originated in India and therefore the look was "appropriated" long before Bonita accused Cory of appropriating her culture. Unless Bonita is Indian in which case I've made a terrible mistake based on assumptions about external factors.

      1. Rational Exuberance   9 years ago

Culture isn't something you get from your genes. No, Bonita doesn't come from Indian culture, or African culture for that matter. Among other things, both those cultures are highly patriarchal, so for her to address a man like she did would be completely culturally inappropriate "in her culture".

  13. Hugh Akston   9 years ago

    But Tindle's thuggish behavior...

If we were to make a list of actual trigger words, 'Thuggish' might be top 5 with regards to the parlance of the times. The N words still reigns but I'd say that 'thug' is usually layered in contempt and it's usage most be more commonplace with each passing day.

          1. Rhywun   9 years ago

It's time to take it back then.

          2. soflarider   9 years ago

It's doubly wrong because it was appropriated from Indian culture.

        5. Irish ?s Lauren Southern   9 years ago

""Well then while he's adjusting his blockquote tags, maybe Robby can find a better word to use than 'thuggish'.""

Are you trying to play the 'the word thug is just code for the n-word!' game because that's an awfully strange argument to make in a place where white cops are constantly getting referred to as thugs.

          1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

the wonderful thing about the magical power of "THE N WORD" is that whenever you want to try and avoid an argument and just discredit people via nitpicking? You can just claim that some *new* word is just being used as a replacement for said magical-N-word, and therefore they're obviously being racist and should be denounced before anyone ever listens to the rest of their argument.

Basically, never say "Thug" anymore, because idiots will pull a Rain-Man and start demanding people pay attention to them

          2. Hugh Akston   9 years ago

I'm playing the game where the word thug is used to describe black people who are acting pretty innocuously in order to justify violence against them.

Tindle is definitely engaging in some inappropriate and unwanted touching here, but she's not being especially violent. Her actions don't rise to the level of thuggishness, or even a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk2E1CoGe98" thugeeness.

    2. Rational Exuberance   9 years ago

  15. AddictionMyth   9 years ago

This is embarrassing. But obviously the kids just want to provoke fights with each other. Both sides are laying the righteous indignation on thick. The same thing is happening on a national level between Trump and Sanders. There is no difference. They key is to find an ideology to justify your pious sanctimony and then lie awake at night figuring out how to unleash it.

The whole Melissa click thing is far more disturbing as she actually makes calls for violence to get her way.

    1. Hugh Akston   9 years ago

So someone calling for the use of physical force to get their way is far more disturbing than someone actually using physical force to her their way?

      2. Lee G   9 years ago

That's a pretty minimal display of force that would be aggravating but I don't see any evidence that she means to follow it up with some real coercion. Click was calling for some good old fashioned gang violence.

Of course I could be wrong in that she may have wanted to filed assault charges against him later but the video spoiled her plans. That would be much worse.

        1. Hugh Akston   9 years ago

Click was calling for some good old fashioned gang violence.

If only we lived in a world where we didn't have to blindly obey every command and request made by anyone ant any time.

          1. Lee G   9 years ago

She did put hands on him and that is definitely stepping over bounds, but I don't get the impression she was going to escalate it further. Click definitely wanted to escalate. She would have been fine with drawing some blood if she could have gotten someone willing and capable to do it.

Just trying to read some intentions here. As difficult and unreliable a process that can be. And I'm generally pretty loathe to involve the legal system unless absolutely necessary.

            1. Hugh Akston   9 years ago

I guess we're all fortunate that nobody actually paid attention to Click calling for some muscle then. No weapon forged by man could have stopped her after she tasted human blood.

        3. Night Elf Mohawk   9 years ago

Depends on the jurisdiction whether battery is a separate offense or just a different level of assault.

          In Texas,

Sec. 22.01. ASSAULT. (a) A person commits an offense if the person:
          ...
          (3) intentionally or knowingly causes physical contact with another when the person knows or should reasonably believe that the other will regard the contact as offensive or provocative.

          It would be assault here.

          1. DarrenM   9 years ago

Wow. This is a definition I would have expected in California. This is in Texas? We are doomed.

    3. Idle Hands   9 years ago

      "Other than physically grabbing him"

I actually think the Melissa Click thing was blown way out of proportion, personally.

So, yeah, somebody gets all up in your grill and grabs, you can punch them, sure.

That's the real problem with labeling people and actions... it starts out with a specific definition (if I recall, it was just "white folks adopting an ethnic activity and claiming that they originally started it")... but then it gets perverted into "white folks copying minority folks, period". For a group of people claiming to be against fascism, they sure are cultivating their own brand of it.

OK, nothing more than a couple of comments in the Chron, no confirmation:

        " cfbrown Rank 2021
@Apollo100 First, if you cannot figure out this video is staged, you are beyond help. Do you think most schools have cameramen standing in the hall with camera set up and ready to film "altercations" between students? Do you think people in real life say stupid staged lines like they did in this video? It's fake.
Second, what Trump's manager did was violently yank someone from behind who was not a threat to anyone. It was a clear and indefensible physical assault, which is why the prosecutor charged him with assault."

In his rebuttal video, Goldstein said that the incident started upstairs and that "she [Tindle] followed me down two flights of stairs." The guy taking the video likely pulled out his phone on the way down. At least that's what it sounds like. It still could be staged.

      Aren't we all...one?

      1. commodious spittoon   9 years ago

Culture =! genetic lineage. But that makes the debate all the dumber, because they're essentially saying that the happenstances of time and place should be preserved in amber and should override any other consideration like cultural affinity or the essential sameness of all people. Social justice dweebs are arguing for division and racial essentialism.

        1. Mustang   9 years ago

True. I guess what I was getting at is that since we all basically came from the same place it would be reasonable to assume that culture has the same origin, and all subsequent deviations in culture build off whatever could be considered the original human culture (wherever that may be), so is it even possible to appropriate culture if it all has the same origin?

          1. commodious spittoon   9 years ago

Honestly, I think you're giving them too much credit. The notion devolves on a pretty basic premise, white people are wrong and terrible. The point isn't preserving or elevating culture, it's castigating whites.

      Bob Marley is universal.

Bob Marley would never condone denying someone some dreads.

It should also be said that dreads aren't just an African thing. Dreadlocks are used by Tibetan Buddhists, they in the Bible, they're used by Hindus. I believe Jain holy men use them as well.

Many cultures use them, and they all signify the same thing--asceticism.

Not only is she wrong to bring up cultural appropriation--she's wrong on the facts. No doubt, Bob Marley popularized the style, but it isn't just an African thing.

Sampson in the Bible lost his power when Delila cut off his dreads.

Bob Marley is universal. [...] It should also be said that dreads aren't just an African thing.

In fact, they are primarily not an African thing. Of course, some Africans have always worn them, but they had particular cultural significance mainly in the Near East, India, and Northern Europe.

In different words, Bob Marley culturally appropriated the deadlocks from the tribe of Judah.

Indians have a significant presence in West Indies (see Naipul) where they worked alongside Africans on sugar plantations.

Dreadlocks were common among German tribes, Vikings, Buddhists, Spartans, and Celts. The modern association of African Americans with dreadlocks goes back through Rastafari, which is actually rooted in Biblical, non-African traditions. So, there has been cultural appropriation, it just went the other way.

  44. Loki   9 years ago

A San Francisco State University student of color harassed and assaulted a white student earlier this week, accusing him of stealing her culture?because he had dreadlocks.

Given how obsessed universities are with creating safe spaces for students, I'm surprised SFSU isn't taking more decisive action. What good is a safe space, after all, if it does not guarantee actual physical safety?

I'm not surprised, "safe spaces" have nothing to do with providing all students with physical safety. They're about providing SJW dipshits with emotional and intellectual safe spaces where they never have to engage with any thoughts or ideas that they disagree with. In that context using physical violence against anyone who offends them in their safe space is A-OK.

Hell, why else do you think they've been so keen on equating rhetoric/ speech they disagree with with violence? It's so that when they respond with actual physical violence they can do so with a clear conscience.

By the way, compare "historical disadvantage" and historical culture. Think of male culture, and extend it to boys' clubs (figuratively, and very nearly literally). Why would women get access to that culture and these clubs? Anti-discimination (positive rights) is (cultural) appropriation. "Historical disadvantage" is the necessary concept/corrective to give women and minorities the right to appropriate, and the right to deny others appropriation. Naturally, this doesn't answer why women had a right to participate in historical male cultures, to appropriate parts of these cultures. In the absence of such a right, actionable "historical disadvantage" (a rights violation) becomes nearly impossible to determine (and not just one would have to engage in a comparable worth/disadvantage/advantage analysis). So that concept is on shaky grounds.

In short, women get to wear pants, and get to deny men skirts*. I'm not sure what hot pants mean here, apart from combining the best of pants and skirts -- when women wear them.

*Very complicated when it comes to Scots, it'd require historical exegesis -- but "historical disadvantage" would probably trump anything.

The most known set of dreadlocks, at least recently, are worn by the Rastafarians. Per Wikipedia, Rastafari maintain that locks are required by Leviticus 21:5 and the Nazirite law in Numbers 6:5. In other words, they were inspired by Nazarites - a group of religiously ascetic Jews who took vows not to cut their hair. Sampson (once again, a figure out of the Jewish Torah/old testament for Christianity) is considered by many to have been a Nazarite and has very much been claimed by the Rastafarian as one of their own. Alternatively, to many Rastafarians, dreadlocks also symbolizes the mane (locks) of the lion in the Lion of Judah - a title which they associate with Ethiopia's Kings. Prior to that symbol being associated with Ethopia's kingship, the Lion of Judah was and is the symbol of the Hebrew tribe of Judah. According to the Torah, the tribe of Judah consists of the descendants of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob. So, once again, we're suddenly back in Jewish culture and history.

So, the dreadlocks were part of Jewish culture prior to being adopted by other groups. I can't tell from the article if Goldstein is, in fact Jewish - but given his name, it is very likely that one or more of his ancestors was. So, I think a pretty good argument could be made that he was not, in fact, appropriating any culture other than his own.

    1. MarkM   9 years ago

Putting the hypocrisy of confronting someone of Jewish descent regarding their dreadlocks to one side, personally, I hate the entire argument. The fundamental assumption embedded in this confrontation is that there is something wrong with "cultural appropriation". This assumption is contrary to the entire history of ideas.

Culture is not static. Cultures interact. Cultures borrow from one another. Cultures grow. Occasionally, cultures even die (or merge into other cultures). The Greek's gods are renamed and become the Roman pantheon. The midwinter pagan celebrations of Germany become the Yule log and Christmas tree. The Easter Bunny is generally acknowledged to be a leftover from the pagan festival of Eostre, a great northern goddess whose symbol was a rabbit or hare. The exchange of eggs in Spring is an ancient custom, celebrated by many cultures. The arab communities preserved greek and roman advances in mathematics (and add their own contribution like the 0) until they were re-discovered and/or re-transmitted back to Europe. Christianity spread and the influence of the druids in Ireland declines (but a number of the pre-Christian deities become revered "Saints" for a period of time).

    2. MarkM   9 years ago

And I'm sorry, but not all cultures deserve to survive. I'm glad that the Spanish and their allies overthrew the Aztec, ending the traditions of human sacrifice in which it is estimated that 20,000 people were sacrificed each year with special occasions demanding more blood ? like when a new temple to Huitzilopochtli was dedicated in 1487, an estimated 80,400 people were sacrificed. I would also suggest that the drug dealing "culture" of the inner city with its preoccupation and/or focus on turf, honor and revenge has clearly resulted in many innocent dead or true victims, the creation of a climate of fear which has lead to the effective destruction of entire neighborhoods, and the destruction of many lives - whether lost to the gangs, lost to prison or lost to the grave.

If you want to focus on culture, don't focus on cultural appropriation. This is a red herring. We should be focusing on what elements in a culture that bring the maximum human freedom and happiness to the members of that culture and those people outside the culture who interact with members of the culture. We should be focusing on how to change toxic elements in a culture. We should be focusing on the impact that a culture has on both the community participating in that culture and in the broader communities around that culture. This is the real battle - and in its name, I'd be happy to appropriate anything from another culture that works.

  74. Slow-Rion   9 years ago

Oh, and they need to stop using cars and any other motorized vehicle. And airplanes. Oh, and anything that contains plastic. And any clothes with synthetic fibers. And any food grown with fertilizer made using the Haber process. And no more immunizations, of course, or any other fruit of modern Western medicine. And....and....and...

These things are all deeply important to my culture, so I'm sure this young lady will understand and agree.

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.

Most of those people who are screaming about appropriation have very little knowledge of history or cultural exchange. I personally find the kimono debate interesting because the organizers, who are Korean-American, Chinese-American, and Philippine-American, can often be seen lecturing the counter protesters, who are actual Japanese elderly ladies. I find it hard to comprehend the amount of narcissism required to do that. What amazes me is that most of the time, the protesters are basing their argument on what is actually a shallow and stereotyped knowledge of the subject. One thing I heard lately is about toe rings. The people making the argument assumed that toe rings are solely a part of Indian culture, and did not bother to research the matter. I know from archaeological evidence that my Nordic ancestors were also pretty fond of toe rings. I assume that lots of other cultures did as well.
The impulse to police others behavior is fundamentally an anti-social trait. It gives people who enjoy criticizing others an excuse to do so. Of course the reasoning behind it falls apart when you think the argument out completely, so they never do that.

Some one needs to ask this young woman why she's wearing "European" clothing. That's cultural appropriation. Why is she wearing shoes? Why is she wearing a bra? That was invented by a Frenchman and she's obviously of African descent...that's cultural appropriation!

This story has created big waves. There is even a petition to remove the young lady from the SFSU. I totally agree with the spirit of petition and I think the young lady is an idiot and a Social Justice Warrior (SJW) bully.
However, I won't sign the petition because:

    - I don't want to act like an SJW (if the roles were reversed, the SJWs would sign the petition in droves). I prefer not to participate in online bullying and mobbing.

    - This is not real aggression because nobody got hurt. Perhaps it's "microaggression" but not aggression. The SJWs consider "microaggression" as real aggresion, let's not imitate them.

    - I think university administrations should stay out of student life, except in extreme situations where people get hurt. Here again, online mobbing to force the university to remove the young lady guilty of light pushing and (very) stupid words is exactly what the SJWs would do.

  108. Pope Jimbo   9 years ago

Yeah, I've been watching the live tweets from the conference.

As someone who hasn't paid all that much attention to the details of the case, it sounds like a semi-legit shoot. Seems like they pretty much proved that he wasn't cuffed when they shot him.

My only problem is that once again, they escalated things too quickly.

  109. Rhywun   9 years ago

    Schwarze?! Erm....

  110. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   9 years ago

Based off the evidence provided it would seem like a justified shooting. Of course objective truth is off the table whenever cops (or the state) control the narrative.

    Back to the future?

  112. Restoras   9 years ago

I don't understand the 'slide caught' comment. If you pull the trigger and the gun doesn't go off you have a dud or a hung round - the slide can't get 'caught' until the round ignites at which point it could jam or get caught on something (slidebite?) on the recoil and reloading. And, if the slide did get 'caught' you can't pull the trigger and expect any effect. Right?

  113. Pope Jimbo   9 years ago

Not sure. There is some video, the police have been trying to keep it from being released.

They were claiming they couldn't release it because it might prejudice any future trials if charges were brought. Now that no charges were brought it will be interesting to see what their new reason for not releasing it is.

I totally share your mistrust of the cops, but there were a bunch of "eyewitnesses" in the neighborhood who claimed they shot him while he was handcuffed. The press conference pretty much laid out the 999 reasons that proved that wasn't true.

So you have a situation where every single goddamned person is an asshole. The cops, the noncops and the victim.

  114. Pope Jimbo   9 years ago

I'm laughing because I'm from a total mutt family too. We just happened to move to NW Minnesoda as a kid where everyone was Norwegian. I was something of an oddity there because the only Norwegian heritage that I could even try to claim was from my grandmother and she was adopted. Given how dark complected her skin was (my dad's too) her claim to be Norwegian was a total fabrication.

  115. sarcasmic   9 years ago

Personally I assume that every word a cop says or writes down in relation to an encounter with a member of the public is false unless there is video and/or audio that confirms it.

Honest cops are the exception, not the rule.

  121. bvandyke   9 years ago

I have not see the video but the 'slide caught' comment is strange. Restoras is correct, if the slide gets caught you have to manually do something to clear the chamber and basically reset the gun. You just can't pull the trigger again.

  122. 68Whiskey   9 years ago

I suspect he's referring to the slide being out of battery when he tried to fire. With a contact gunshot (i.e., muzzle pressed against target), it's possible with the application of very little force to push the slide back far enough to where an automatic pistol will "unlock" and be unable to fire.

  123. Restoras   9 years ago

Interesting, yes I can see that happening, at least from the standpoint of not being able to fire, and then being able to when the pressure against the front of the slide was removed.

  124. SimonD   9 years ago

Maybe it's like with dogs. Everyone knows mutts are the smart ones.

(let me see, English, Irish, French, German, Cherokee, Semitic here).

I would be constantly at war with myself.

None of those Eye-talians or Ay-rabs or Pollocks or Slovaks that are all over town.

At least we don't have any French. And when we did, we mispronounced their names (like ver-sails and dew-boyz)
