Michael Moore Points Out Futility of Flint Voting Democrat For Almost A Century

On the eve of the Democratic debate in town.

Fox News screencap

Michael Moore took to Twitter to call out Democrats holding a debate in Flint, Michigan tonight. The event wasn't one of the Original Six debates (most of which were held on weekend dates). Last month, Hillary Clinton, who spent much of 2015 as the presumptive nominee, and Bernie Sanders, the last man standing after the Iowa caucus, agreed to four more debates, including tonight's in Flint.

Flint was chosen in large part because of the media attention surrounding the water crisis (briefly: government providing residents with dirty water and then trying to cover it up), a transparently politically opportunistic move.

Michael Moore pointed out on Twitter that Flint voters' longstanding support for Democrats hasn't yielded them much:

Flint has voted for Dems for 84 straight yrs. What did it get us? For 18 months Dems remained silent &ignored pleas while Flint was poisoned

— Michael Moore (@MMFlint) March 6, 2016

But now they have a Democratic debate, ahead of the Tuesday primary in Michigan.

And there are plenty of Republicans to blame for the Flint water crisis, and certainly enough for Democratic leaders in Flint and at the state capitol to shift their own responsibility onto. So don't expect anyone to pay a political price for the Flint water crisis, let alone one that might discourage such government malfeasance in the future.

The fealty Democrats have cultivated among their base with the use of identity politics and rhetoric has trapped that base with political leadership that doesn't have to be particularly responsive to people's actual preferences or desires.

Flint's fucked-up water supply is actually REALLY to be blamed on LIBERTARIANS and the KKKoch Brothers, evil bastahds that they are!!!!

    1. Res ipsa loquitur   9 years ago

I'm surprised reason doesn't blame Trump....also, why wasn't Trump mentioned once in this article....a bit scary that he isn't.

      1. Social Contractor   9 years ago

I take their silence about Trump here to be an explicit endorsement of him for President.

Democracy is counterproductive. Pointless, at best.

Michael Moore makes sense? It is truly the end times. [ opens beer]

Truly it is. Michael Moore made sense and Sheldon Richman wrote a good column today.

Seems like the Republican's biggest failure in this was to appoint a Democrat in charge.

    1. Gilbert Martin   9 years ago

And that, apparently, is enough to make it all entirely the fault of Republicans and give a complete pass to every single Democrat who was involved in it in any way whatsoever.

  8. Grand Moff Serious Man   9 years ago

So basically it'll be a contest to see which candidate can better blame the Republicans for the Flint debacle. Bonus points for dragging in the Kochs and privatization/evil corporate profits.

    1. Inigo Montoya, Micro-Aggressor   9 years ago

Yeah, too bad the problem was caused by a government-sponsored jobs program rather than any sort of privatization.

It's a bit like the "white Hispanic" story from a few years ago -- it's hilarious just how far they have to stretch the basic facts to make the story fit their desired narrative.

  9. Social Contractor   9 years ago

I haven't looked into this. It just proves that you can't have one single Republican in the city or it all goes to shit. We need common sense Republican controls.

    1. Agammamon   9 years ago

Look at California - they've had a Democratic supermajority at pretty much all levels of government for decades and somehow those damn Republicans keep fucking shit up.

    3. Akira   9 years ago

I'd say that we need occupational licensing for politicians if only the very idea of licensing weren't so fraught with error.

After all, the regulation enthusiasts would find it unthinkable to let just anyone open up a medical practice and operate on people because their incompetence could get people killed... Yet, they don't bat an eye at letting just anyone run our lives for us and potentially kill thousands of people, or sentence many more of them to a dismal standard of living through failed central planning bullshit.

  10. Rhywun   9 years ago

And there are plenty of Republicans to blame for the Flint water crisis, and certainly enough for Democratic leaders in Flint and at the state capitol to shift their own responsibility onto.

I haven't followed this enough to know for certain, but it seems to me that one person should have been responsible for the water supply and that is the person who is at fault. That is generally how these things work. Why are we accepting all the buck-passing?

    1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

I flew out of there a couple of years ago. It looks like the suburbs are turning into prairie.

  20. Calidissident   9 years ago

It's amazing how Flint has turned into a situation where Democrats have no culpability and it's purely the fault of Republicans and their evil free market ideology. If one Republican was possibly at fault to some extent, apparently that absolves all the Democrats and government agencies who contributed to it. And it's all the fault of nonexistent privatization (I've seriously seen that argument made multiple times - even though Flint wasn't and isn't privatizing their water supply).

    1. Glide   9 years ago

They tried to reduce costs! That is literally the same thing as turning their water system over to Goldman Sachs!

      1. Inigo Montoya, Micro-Aggressor   9 years ago

OK, not to defend Hillary's buddies, but if they had simply turned over their water system to Goldman Sachs, things would have been different. Not only would it not have been poisoned, it would have been not water but a decent vintage of pinot grigio flowing out of every tap.

The big question I would like asked at the debate is how the hell is the Flint, Michigan water supply a federal problem. If I could ask a follow-up question: My nose itches, is the federal government going to do something about that or is there some teeny-tiny chance that there's at least one freaking problem in the entire freaking universe that you won't make a freaking federal issue of?

    Guys,

I have a thought experiment for you that is related to Michael Moore and his movie, which I only got around to watching last night. Here it is: in capitalist utopia I pay 20k in taxes. I also pay 15k to my 401k, 10k towards daycare, 5k for my HSA, 15k to a 429 account, and 2k for admission to national parks, user fees, license fees, etc. In contrast, in socialist hellhole I pay 35k for taxes, which covers my daycare, my retirement, and the kids' future education.

Question: how long do I have to wait in capitalist utopia to accumulate enough savings so that I can tell Black people to piss off and stop collecting Welfare?

I think real racism is putting millions of non-violent drug offenders in jail-- most of whom are African American-- and then disenfranchising them by taking away their right to vote. Stupidity is a Black man who makes common political cause with the people who implemented those laws. Also stupid are poor White people voting for right-wing politicians because they think Black people taking Welfare are responsible for the taxes they pay.

The Tea Party is a) irrelevant now - its just a boogeyman guys like you like to throw around, b) was always about reduction in the size of government, not 'taking' welfare away from people. There's plenty to cut before you touch the welfare payouts.

But hey, the press found some people who also held ideas like racism - so therefore that gives you the opening to call everyone a racist.

You know what that makes you? Racist.

Capitalist utopia is ranked 34-- approaching communist hellhole, Cuba, which is ranked 38. I conclude wikipedia is probably run by Stalinist assholes.

              Capitalist utopia is ranked 34

But number 34 is the United States, which isn't even in the top 10 most economically free countries. You might want to update your talking points every 25-40 years to reflect current conditions.

Let's see - I'm seeing a whole bunch of socialist and quasi-socialist countries in the bottom half of that list.

          1. Agammamon   9 years ago

Then I'll point out that the *top* of the list the average life expectancy is 84.

At the US' position its 79.

That's a hell of a lot of money to pay for an extra 4-5 years.

            1. Agammamon   9 years ago

Oh, and if you take Japan out of the picture you get - di you know that Japan only pays for 70% of *routine* (screening examinations, prenatal care and infectious disease control) and the citizen has to pick up the rest.

And that it has a government run 'universal' Insurance system with high costs?

              Spain 83 86 80
              USA 79 81 76

      3. Heroic Mulatto   9 years ago

Everyone, let's take a moment and admire the combination of breathtakingly deep arrogance and abject stupidity that exists within amsoc.

He posted a link to a table of countries ranked by life expectancy in an attempt at some thought-terminating cliche to support the superiority of socialism. Let's look at the ruling parties of the top countries and the bottom countries.

        Top Countries
Japan: Liberal Democratic Party - a center-right party
Spain: People's Party - a conservative "Christian democrat" party
Andorra: Democrats for Andorra - center-right
        Singapore: People's Action Party - a free-market/social conservatism
        Switzerland: Swiss People's Party - right-wing populism
Australia: Coalition - free market/social conservatism
Italy: Democratic Party - social democracy
San Marino: Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party - centrism

        Bottom Countries:
Angola: People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola - social deomcracy
Zambia: Patriotic Front - democratic socialism
        Lesotho: Democratic Congress pan-Africanist socialism
Mozambique: Mozambique Liberation Front - democratic socialism
Sierra Leone: All People's Congress - democratic socialism
Liberia: Unity Party - free market centrism
Djibouti: People's Rally for Progress - democratic socialism
Malawi: Democratic Progressive Party - big tent centrism

Of the top countries, only 1, Italy, was ruled by a social democratic party. Of the bottom countries, only 1, Liberia, was ruled by a free-market party.

Bear in mind the retarded cunt thinks Switzerland and Denmark represent pure orthodox communism while the United States of America represents laissez-faire anarcho capitalism. You just have to be wholly ignorant of the meaning of the terms you're using and then it all makes sense.

You just have to be wholly ignorant of the meaning of the terms you're using and then it all makes sense.

        3. Sevo   9 years ago

He also ignored any trends regarding the life spans, the differences in the definition of 'live births', the confounding factors of population cultural diversity and age, plus probably several other issues, all to cherry-pick a maximum of a 6-year difference in the *average* life expectancy.
          Fuck off, slaver.

    8. JPyrate   9 years ago

Answer. A "Utopia" is unattainable. Of course a Totalitarian like you AMSOC would force your version of "Heaven" on everyone else instead of letting every individual make choices, that make them happy in this life.

      1. JPyrate   9 years ago

His kids. He cares nothing for any other parents kids. Only his own.

        1. Tornado16nb   9 years ago

One would think a parent would be proud to save money for college for their kids. Sounds like they are a nuisance to him

    10. Pat (PM)   9 years ago

In contrast, in socialist hellhole I pay 35k for taxes, which covers my daycare, my retirement, and the kids' future education.

Yes, but you have to understand that after the government replaces 47k worth of investments you make for yourself with only 15k in additional taxes, they have to provide union wages, food, housing, retirement and education for the underpants gnomes that made up the 32k difference, so it's basically a wash.

    11. lulztopian   9 years ago

Is the retirement in socialist hellhole something that you own and is heritable? Bet not. Also, why should we fund a lifestyle choice like having children? Liberals like you love to tell us that having a child is a choice, and why do you want to discriminate against the childless?

    12. Brian   9 years ago

      am soc:

The real question you should ask is, how long do you have to wait in a capitalist system before you become a man, instead of whining like a little boy who wants to be taken care of?

      Nice to see you again.

"The real question you should ask is, how long do you have to wait in a capitalist system before you become a man, instead of whining like a little boy who wants to be taken care of?"

It would be nice if that pathetic excuse for a human being grew up and became a moral agent, but given the investment the twerp has made in whining, I doubt it'll happen.

    13. Pay up, Palin's Buttplug!   9 years ago

Question: how long do I have to wait in capitalist utopia to accumulate enough savings so that I can tell Black people to piss off and stop collecting Welfare?.

It depends upon what it says on your fifth line.

  27. Sevo   9 years ago

OT, since I don't give a shit about the supposed 'debate'

Fisherfolk who work the ocean off San Fran and environs have been prohibited from catching Dungeness crabs this year; some sort of toxin associated with El Nino. Well, ya know, some years suck and a good fisherguy or -gal would obviously put money aside for that circumstance, much as ANY people involved in risky professions, right?
"Bill aims to give crab industry $138 million in disaster relief"
    [...]
"Speier's office estimated that commercial crab fishermen have lost $68 million this season, while related businesses, such as restaurants that depend on selling the seafood delicacy to diners, are down about $70 million. "
    http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/.....871392.php

So Speier's staff pulls numbers out of someone's ass, and we should be happy to pay?

Yeah I thought that was SOP for farmers and such. And it's not like farmers are receiving any subsidies or anything.

OK, not ANY, but I know plenty of RE agents who make sure they cover the years when the fed screws the interest rates.

A few weeks ago the waiter came into the kitchen and asked me, "A customer wants to know if your Atlantic Salmon is wild caught, or farmed ?"

I told the waiter, to tell the customer "That if he/she is asking that question, then he/she already knows the answer."

"Tell them that he/she can FUCK OFF !!!"

Atlantic Salmon are farmed, because they are endangered in the wild.

      1. JPyrate   9 years ago

Sevo. farmed. of this Seafood can be farmed. It's the rich progressive asshole "Foodies" that insist on everything being "Wild Caught"
