Brickbat: Catfishing

Former Bibb County, Georgia, sheriff's deputy Ryan Willis has been sentenced to two years in prison and eight years probation after pleading guilty to identity fraud and making harassing phone calls. Willis sent photos of a woman without her permission to his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend in an attempt to disrupt that relationship. That woman was the victim in a criminal case who had come to him for help.

The two women and the other guy had it coming, quite frankly. If you're stupid enough to date a cop, marry a cop's ex or come to a cop for help, you deserve what you get.
True, cops have a higher than average rate of domestic violence too.I believe their at or near the top of the list.Something never talked about in most media.

Not to discredit the basic idea ,but I find it hard to believe that half of cops wives are victims of domestic violence, and a quarter of all women, I'd wager some iffy definitions of DV and some number fudging going on.
Good point.Still, most sources I have seen show cops much more likely to commit DV.There is also the problem of cover ups and fear of retaliation. The divorce rates are very high to as is alcohol abuse. It seems self important bullies are violent drunks.
Yeah, those numbers are probably jacked up a bit but even so...twice the rate? I don't find that hard to believe. I know a few cops and off the top of my head I can think of only one that wouldn't beat his wife.
I have a friend that I duck hunt with that was a sheriff for several years.there were quite a few of his coworkers in trouble from time to time for this. Not one in two,but more than I expected. What got me was many of them had GF's on the side.
When fidelity to the law is beneath your station, the laws of fidelity certainly don't apply.
Hell, I'd believe three four times the rate, I just don't buy for a second that the rate is 25%
Thank you,I stand vindicated.
Can someone tell me how the act of pretending to be comeone else to induce jealousy got the name 'catfishing'?
Wiki claims it came from a movie and is explained thusly
In the film the husband of the "catfish", Vince, relays a story of how when live cod were shipped to Asia from North America, the fish's inactivity in their tanks resulted in only mushy flesh reaching the destination. However, fishermen found that putting catfish in the tanks with the cod kept them active, and thus ensured the quality of the fish. Vince made an analogy of how there are people in everyone's lives who keep each other active, always on their toes and always thinking, suggesting that people should always be alert while socializing through the Internet.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me but there you are.
I like my idea better.
I also find the claim that anyone would ship live cod for consumption to be absurd. I'd need a citation on anyone doing that before not punching this fictional character for his obnoxious anecdote. You're going to get more from processed (i mean butchered, not machined) frozen cod, which is cheaper to ship and hard for the vast majority of consumers to tell the difference. All the added water weight to keep the fish alive rules out air freight, and limits the absolute capacity of the boat. There is literally no argument in favor of live shipping fish to be eaten.
Especially shipping cod alive. The grand banks fishing grounds have been feeding Europe salted cod for a couple hundred years.
I wonder that also.Maybe because you use bait? I use to use chicken livers or bait shrimp as a kid.
