Donald Trump's Orgy of Irresponsibility
He lies and calls for violence, and his supporters cheer him on.

Jimmy Carter knew that one way to win the trust of the citizenry was to appeal to their moral vanity. He was elected president in 1976 promising "a government that is as good and honest and decent and competent and compassionate and as filled with love as are the American people."
Donald Trump does not try to ingratiate himself by telling Americans how good they are. He does it by telling them it's commendable to be bad. His campaign is not so much a challenge to prevailing standards as a rejection of all standards.
Other candidates fudge, exaggerate, and mislead, but they operate within accepted limits on dishonesty. Trump denies truth and embraces falsehood. He can't be proven wrong because he and his followers deny the authority of facts. He encourages his audiences to trust what they feel—and nothing else.
"Donald J. Trump's record on truth and accuracy is astonishingly poor," Angie Drobnic Holan, a reporter for PolitiFact, wrote in December in The New York Times. "So far, we've fact-checked more than 70 Trump statements and rated fully three-quarters of them as Mostly False, False or 'Pants on Fire' (we reserve this last designation for a claim that is not only inaccurate but also ridiculous)."
That was before a new parade of fictions—saying the United States is the "highest taxed country in the world," claiming he vocally opposed the invasion of Iraq before it happened, and accusing Ted Cruz of having a "double passport." Making stuff up is at the core of his campaign.
Of 96 Trump statements scrutinized by PolitiFact at last count, only seven were true. By contrast, Hillary Clinton, whom Republicans regard as a habitual liar, sticks to the facts slightly more than half the time, according to the fact-checkers.
The brazen deceit Trump exhibits would be fatal to most candidates. Cruz, no slave to veracity, had to fire a spokesman for spreading the claim that Marco Rubio had disparaged the Bible. Trump would not have made that claim. He would have recalled the time Rubio spit on a Bible while wearing a Satan mask in the Grand Mosque of Mecca.
Trump's contempt for the truth is no impediment with a large segment of the Republican primary electorate, which has an adversarial relationship with reality. Two-thirds of Trump supporters think Barack Obama is a Muslim, a survey by Public Policy Polling found, and 61 percent think he was born abroad. Other candidates may decline to indulge voters who are ignorant or unhinged. But Trump is not bound by such dreary customs.
In every way, his campaign has been an orgy of irresponsibility. George W. Bush outraged his critics by waterboarding suspected terrorists, a method he insisted is not torture. Trump says it is torture—and its only drawback is being too gentle.
"I think we should go much stronger than waterboarding," he said. In his view, "nothing should be taken off the table." Any form of sadism you can imagine, Trump will happily consider.
Terrorist suspects are not the only ones at risk of brutality. When someone disrupted his rally, Trump wished for the days of old, when a protester "would be carried out on a stretcher."
His anathema for Muslims, like his taste for torture, knows no bounds. He called for a "complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on." He fondly recalled an American general who, according to a doubtful legend, executed Muslim prisoners using bullets dipped in pig's blood.
For some reason, his glorification of hatred and violence appeals to many evangelical Christians, whose savior preached the golden rule. Saintly attributes, in his eyes, are for suckers. Trump tells his supporters that their most vicious impulses should not be suppressed.
Even on less visceral matters, Trump sees boundaries as something to violate without compunction. His tax plan would swell the federal budget deficit by $10 trillion over the next decade. His insistence that this approach will bring the economy roaring back will convince only those who need no convincing. Like his other policies, it treats recklessness as a virtue.
Some politicians think that, on occasion, exceptions have to be made to our observance of civilized norms. Trump wants to toss those civilized norms on a bonfire. He's found plenty of Americans just dying to light the match.

He encourages his audiences to trust what they feel?and nothing else.
I.e., he has adopted the political stance of the feminists, who also reject empiricism.
If only Steve Chapman had the balls to tell us who he thinks is the best nominee.
Of course he will never do that because I would destroy that candidate within two sentences exposing Chapman as the MENTAL MIDGET he is.
Come on Chapman.I dare you.
It'll be fun!
For me.
give it a rest, already
Jay -- Fuck-off asshole?
unless you grow a pair and decide you have the courage to debate me. Then..bring it on asshole.
I doubt you know what a debate is, Trump boy.
bacchys -- Bring it on Ass boy.
Start the debate by saying something negative about Mr. Trump and watch me bury you in your own stupidity.
I dare you.
Come on. It'll be fun!
For me.
Making a generalized statement like that without a single example - or preferably 5 - is also rejection of empiricism.
But if you want to say that they basic demand of all feminists - and 98% of all women - that there should be no discriminatory laws against them is irrational, be a statist ass. (And, no one should be drafted, so don't pull that one.)
scare,
To the degree he makes no sense, you nailed it. But Chappie misses what many here see clearly-Trump violates the Libertarian code of borders - shmorders. By being easily the most committed to immigration control, and adding a Muslim immigration pause, Trump makes the Libertarian mindset spin.
When the arrow stops, it never deals with what storied libertarian economist Milty Friedman pointed out: First control our entitlement issues, and only then let in millions of poor, sick, broke folks who would be entitled to our schools, free hospital care, etc. Those of you who want to pay for that for them could, if we control the border, then fix that stuff. Until then, no.
Muslims? Lots to go into, but one mistake many make is thinking you can't do a religious test on immigration. You sure can! The constitution doesn't give constitutional rights to foreigners not here. The rules can say "get out and we'll consider you - get in line in your home country." Then we set the test. Of course a given panel of Philosopher Kings and Queens-oops, I forgot, we still call them "Supremes"-can vote to award any privileges to foreigners overseas they want. Until then, it's doable.
Alright!!! I was there'd be a few Trump articles today.
*hoping*
"Dreading" also works.
Paging John & Cytotoxic!
Chapman has his Trump hate boner going today I see. Probably helps him channel his angst over HillDog's impending indictment recommendation. I know he's pulling for her.
In this article Chapman quotes Politifact's claim that nearly half of Clintons public statements are lies. That is the only time she is mentioned. Thats not really a sterling endorsement.
And of course, there's the small matter of 'Clinton only lies half of the time in the small subset of her statements that a left-leaning media outlet chooses to scrutinize'
Using Politifact as a useful gauge of anybody's honesty is ridiculous.
So Chapman's voting for Trump. Who else?
Trump has big problems with the truth,as does Hillary. Sanders just can't do math.
While I understand and agree with what you're saying about Sanders, I have to add that he can't do economics either.
Sanders lives in a dream world where the world at large, and humanity in general, obeys government policy. He also imagines an economy ruled by oligarchs who hate to get rich doing business so they divest themselves from the market and hide their gold in a big indoor swimming pool. He's worried about the proletariat--as any good socialist would be--yet supports policies that ultimately rob them of jobs. Ultimately, Sanders is a hater of the Bourgeoisie and everything about them and their lifestyle. He'll damage the economy for all just to stomp on the necks of the Big Bad Bourgeoisie.
So, yeah, he can't do math. But it's much worse.
Oh,he's a socialist,there for,evil.
One more thing about his dream world: Everything is zero-sum. Every transaction has a winner and a loser. If I buy a pack of gum for 50 cents, I just got robbed for the sake of lining the Wrigley CEO's dildos with gold. There is no transfer of money possible that benefits both parties.
(Unless, of course, I support my local union or donate to Bernie Sanders, in which case my money is being used to better my life.)
Good point. Socialists just don't get economics, or the market, at all. And, if we consider that the market is just people doing what people do, then they fail to understand human nature as well.
Now Trump, he understands the market. But he'd use it against us just as much as Sanders would use his own ignorance against us.
Buy Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream. It's the exception. As Good Socialists they operate in a win win world where every tiny tub of ice cream sold gives another vote to Bernie.
I didn't know Unilever was an exception. Don't they make several different deodorants?
Best to just purge his kind before they gain enough support to do here what they did in Russia, China, Cambodia, Cuba, Venez.......Hell anywhere they get some control. Best that they all perish to protect the rest of us.
So you don't like Trump, huh Chapman? I get it. But this constant Trump bashing, by you and your fellows at Reason, is making me want to support him even as I loathe reading yet another article about him. Could we please read about the faults of some other candidate? Pretty please?
WHYCOME BE COSMOS NO NICE TO TURMP ME VOTE TUMP NOW
Nice rejoinder there. Do you have a blog I can read to catch up on cosmotarianism?
U SOUND LIKE U READ BOOKS OR SOMETHING U FAGGOT
His shit's all 'tarded, and he talks like a fag!
Can there be faggot cookies? Pinko chocolate chip maybe?
Any day now, some Reason writers will be endorsing Hillary as somehow the 'lesser of two evils'. If they haven't done so already.
I look forward to the "The Case for Hillary" articles.
Most of Trump's support comes because of the hysterical pants shitting dishonesty of his enemies.
By comparison he ends up looking honest.
Thanks for making my point better than I did. Not only is there pants-shitting, we get a daily dose of it.
Why is everything pants shitting now? I mean, I've had enough of Trump stories too (and I don't even bother reading Chapman). But this is a current events driven political blog and Trump is still the major political story. I'm not sure why writing what you think about the very surprising leading candidate is pants-shitting panic. It's political reporters doing their job.
They got called pant-shitters, therefore people they disagree with must be pant-shitters, because pants-shitters is not an accurate descriptor of the sort of fear-driven politics that builds the military and lust for adventurism by making The Other frighteningly foreign, it's just a content-free insult.
Because SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS TO THOSE WHO DISAGREE THAT THEY NEED TO STOP BEING HYSTERICAL AND SHITTING THEIR PANTS is a clear indication that you have full control of your bowels.
It's easy to be honest when what you say is mostly content free.
"As Steve Chapman explains, other candidates fudge, exaggerate, and mislead, but they operate within accepted limits on dishonesty."
That's a new one. 'Within accepted limits.' News to me.
So, apparently, Trump is waaayyy outside the box where the politicians lie and lie. Please. I don't see the difference between Obama saying 'the science is settled' with much of what Trump says. BOTH are absurd.
Trump is so evil. Yeah well, it's not Trump drone-killing Americans without due process. Just thought it was worth noting here.
Sanders, being a socialist is evil as a rule.He believes in a form of government that has caused millions of deaths and is still reeking havoc in parts of the world .
Agreed. I resubmit my point above as an elaboration on what you just said.
Initially Sanders was being propped up here as palatable to Libertarians, because he mumbled some bullshit sounding like advocacy for police reform (though was really just racialist pandering to BLM). And he said pot should be legal.
Ergo, derp derp, hey, Libertarian Moment!
Initially Sanders was being propped up here as palatable to Libertarians
Was it that, or was it just mentioning that he is less terrible on some issues? It is possible to discuss candidates without engaging in political advocacy. A few of Sanders's positions are slightly more palatable to libertarians than those of the other candidates. That's hardly a ringing endorsement.
Not with a socialist.
Some people can't comprehend that dousing yourself with sewer water is less painful than doing so with hydrochloric acid.
Sanders would be more palatable than Clinton, who likes the same kind of corporate welfare and police state the GOP does, but combines it with a a race and sex based view of civil rights and a complete disdain for constitutional limits on Federal power.
They are all fucking evil. And whoever gets elected will almost certainly continue drone-killing Americans and whoever else they please.
I seriously doubt that Trump would be able to resist drone-bombing people.
Especially if it helps him win an eminent domain case.
Chapman strikes me as a leftist subversive. A faggot cookie in disguise?
You've got the disconnect with reality to a Trump supporter...
"Yeah well, it's not Trump drone-killing Americans without due process. "
At least not yet but give Trump time to "grow" in office and I'm sure he'll find a way to kill more people.
"Make Murder Great Again"
Yep, I don't get the hysteria that Trump is so awful compared to everybody else. To my knowledge, Trump has never stood in front of a crowd of his supporters and claimed that half of the country are his enemies, as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both have.
If Trump is elected, he will have a bureaucracy full of eager potential whistleblowers, a hostile media that will hound his every waking moment, and a Republican party full of people who would be all too happy to participate in his impeachment.
If Hillary is elected, she will have a bureaucracy full of eager collaborators, a compliant media that will cast everything she does in the most sympathetic manner possible, and a Democrat party that will close ranks around her to prevent her from suffering any consequences for any action she might take, no matter how unlawful.
To be fair, fact check sites are just as bad as Trump. I rate them only 25% true.
"Angie Drobnic Holan, a reporter for PolitiFact, wrote in December in The New York Times. "
Because when I want the truth, I go to Politifact and The New York Times.
Politifact seems to have a pretty damn left bent. What they choose to "fact check" influences their outcomes, and of course they know that. I can't read them anymore.
I agree. Politifact will define words in ways that let lefties off the hook but crucifies the right. If a lefty says "People are scum" they will rate it half true since some people are scum, but if a righty says "People are scum" they will rate it "pants on fire" because not everyone is scum.
I pretty much agree. I had high hopes when it first launched, but the examples of their bias are everywhere. A recent example is their handling of the meme stating that the Clintons stole $200,000 dollars worth of furniture, china, etc, upon leaving the White House. They go through the effort to show that the total value was close to $190,000, but rate the meme as "mostly false," because it used the word, "stolen."
All fact checkers have a gigantic flaw. Unless they fact check every sentence ever uttered, if Clinton and Trump both lie 50% of the time, they could "fact check" the half of what Hillary says is true and the half of what Trump says is false. Therefore, Hillary lies 0% and Trump lies 100%. Self-selection makes it useless.
Hmmm, the fact check site does not validate my beliefs. Therefore it is wrong!
True story: a conspiratard aquantance claims that Snopes is part of the 9/11 conspiracy because they have shredded all Troofer claims.
On the other hand, one who believes that somebody, anybody, in the agora is selling their wares out of pure, nonpartisan, intellectual service to others, is living the socialist/communist/progressive dream.
People go to the market to sell their products. If they are smart, they will do whatever is required--within some moral limitations--to best market and sell their goods. If you think that Politifact, or some other online service, is merely telling truth to power, then you are falling head-over-heals for their marketing plan.
Trump can not make America great again. Trump is a billionaire because he has mastered crony capitalism, not free market capitalism.
Trump wants his own version of big government.
Trump says anything that is beneficial to his goals at the moment in time that he says it. Which means what he says will always be changing to fit his current wants and needs.
Trump's next book should be titled "The Art of BS."
We can not have a thin-skinned, hot headed, narcissistic, egomaniac in charge of our military, foreign policy and nuclear codes.
Choose limited federal government. Stop making millionaires out of our politicians and lobbyists. Stop increasing the power of connected corporations.
I agree, and how is Hillary any better?
She gets no support from yokeltarians. That's gotta be worth something.
Fuck off, platitudinal shitbag. A liberty candidate isn't on the ballot this cycle.
Right. Nor any other election. Why in the fuck are all these shit sippers voting to begin with?
Your vote is meaningless, so you might as well waste it on the worst possible candidate, if you feel compelled to vote.
I don't want to be ruled by the left anymore! Not a ringing endorsement of Trump, but this election is what it is. I will continue voting libertarian at lower levels, however.
Which is smart. If enough Lib party candidates got elected to congress, governor, etc. , it would be taken far more seriously.
We can not have a thin-skinned, hot headed, narcissistic, egomaniac in charge of our military, foreign policy and nuclear codes.
As I believe you were reminded yesterday: too late.
That's massively over simplistic. It's not like Trump made his fortune on a bed of government contracts. He's into gaming, entertainment, and real estate. HE has profited somewhat over eminent domain deals, and getting over using government connections at times. But given how much business he does in NY and NJ, plus the fact that gaming is so highly regulated, he has to. The fact is that the guy is a smart businessman who has had the good sense and skill to surround himself with sharp people. Which is not an easy thing to do. Plenty of connected people fail at doing the same thing. Look at Sidney Blumenthal.
Maybe TKlist is saying that anybody who makes hir $ iin urban real estate these days has to have a warped perspective on biz, i.e. has to be a crony enterpriser, & therefore disqualified.
Actually Trump is a billionaire because he inherited billions. If he had left it in mutual funds and spent his life laying on a beach, he would have been further ahead.
Using Public Policy Polling makes everything else you write suspect.
Maybe if the media had done a better job of fact-checking themselves over the past several decades, they wouldn't have to worry about fact-checking Trump now. Do you really expect this to get any traction? At this point we've been lied to so often from so many sources, one more liar is the least of our worries.
What a load of HORSE. SHIT.
The other candidates, specifically Hillary, operate within acceptable limits?
Why it is almost as if...oh. Chapman.
Apparently private email servers to conduct government affairs is 'acceptable limits' now.
The goal post is ever shifting. And as it moves, Trump shifts in tandem so he never can be 'within acceptable limits'. Nice way to keep him as a punching bag. Sanders on the other hand, as noted by many already, holds populist socialist views that demonstrably has killed people.
Clearly, Steve is going to work hard to get Cankles elected.
I strongly disliked Trump long before he entered the political arena. And just as much so at the start of this. But over the last few days I've come around to where not only will I vote for him in the primary, if he's not the candidate in the general, I will write him in.
Why?
It's the 'out of spite' vote!
Never underestimate the power of spite.
I think it was Milo who said "Trump pisses off all the right people."
A few reasons. For one, I'm tired of the PC BS at my local online newspaper. If you don't tow the PC lion, you'll be deleted in moments, yet known lefty commenters can call conservatives 'raving mad lunatics' or 'gun masturbators' or some such, and it stands. I don't go into attack mode when commenting, generally try to add something to the conversation, and still get deleted at least 3-4 times a week. Fuck it, Go Get 'em Trump!
So you think Trump is going to do something about the commenting policy of your local online newspaper?
You seem doubtful??
I must know more about this lion.
Fuck you, you elitist fucking cosmo cosmo-drinkers! I'm taking you all down with me!
Now, whose your daddy?!
My friend's sister in-law makes $55 /hour on the computer . She has been out of a job for nine months but last month her income was $13390 just working on the computer for a few hours.visit that site....

At last! A reasonable, meaningful, non-hysterical blog post.
""""The New York Times. "So far, we've fact-checked more than 70 Trump statements and rated fully three-quarters of them as Mostly False, False or 'Pants on Fire'""""
So I am suppose to go by the New York Times standard of truth? So what about those WMD's hidden in Saddams basements or those Ukrainian's living in Stalin's paradise?
Hey, would the paper of Walter Duranty lie to you for political reasons?
As soon as I hear "The NY Times says", I know I can just ignore the following lefty drivel that follows. Kinda handy, actually.
Is Chapman trying to top Sheldon for some kind of biggest Idiot columnist on Reason award or something?
As much as I distrust Trump, I distrust Politifact more. Need a less biased source if you want to use fact checkers as evidence.
I say again Politifact is a mouthpiece of the left. Just give NPR a listen, "according to politifiact, Xxxxx" Yeah, how about no?
Why is it so hard for people to see that the obvious solution to this situation (a race where the choices are Imelda Marcos, Ho Chi Mihn and Mussolini) is TO NOT FUCKING VOTE?
If you actually participate in this farce you're a goddam moron.
Fuck off, cosmo. Only Trump can save us from...um....whatever it is we're shitting our pants over.
MESSICANS DEY TUK ER JERBS!!!11!!!!!
That's my plan. Didn't vote in the primary. If I vote in the general, I'm voting for myself.
Or possibly Almanian!
"Trump wants to toss those civilized norms on a bonfire. "
I don't find the norms of the establishment that civilized. They are the ones who lie and lie and lie again.
To the wood chipper with them!
Vote Woodchipper 2016!
I would vote for a partially anthropomorphic sentient woodchipper. As log as it had a detailed plan for a balanced budget.
it's almost like you assholes probably shouldn't haven't expended all your credibility sucking Obama's dick.
1. Americans love people who say outrageous things.
2. Trump says outrageous things.
3. Therefore, Americans love Trump.
WHERE MY HIT AND RUN GONE
Right down the yokolon.
After Trumpmania, any yokel that calls a libertarian a political nihilist gets hounded off this fucking board.
MAKE HIT AND RUN GREAT AGAIN!
And yugggge.
We need an online registry of Trump supporters for that.
Not a single link in the entire article to the 90 verified statements. Kettle calling the pot black.
Trump is merely the result of a void of good candidates. There are no good candidates because the flow of information is so immediate, so there's no way to build myth. It is becoming more and more obvious that there's no person with the ability to oversee the lives and concerns of 300+ million people. The conclusion to draw - less government and less control? Nope. Let's install the biggest meat head available because he's goofy and it's funny.
You get the government you deserve.
Unfortunately, whether a democracy or a republic, if the majority of people are stupid, they drag down the 10-15% of the people who know shit from shinola. An inconvenience at the best of times, death squads at the worst.
Well said.
"Sometimes you have have to take a big fucking bat the the system!" -- Thomas Jefferson (paraphrased)
One thing I note is that most of the Trump "lies" are real yawners. As opposed to engaging in felony espionage, lying about the deaths of Americans on national television, or blatantly lying about the healthcare system you're pushing on the American people.
Or "to the system."
It sounds more like someone took a fucking bat to your head.
You sure told me!
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure.
It sounds way fancier when Jefferson says it, doesn't it?

A politicians lies are limited by how stupid he thinks Americans are. Judging by his lies, Trump thinks that Americans are barely sentient. The polls seem to support his conclusions.

Excellent article, Steve. And let's not forget he won't just use libel laws to muzzle the press if he's president. He'll use the full power of the FCC to muzzle broadcast media by threatening to pull their licenses. He is fascism writ large and all about the cult of personality. And just imagine what he'll do to the 1 million protesters who show up at his inauguration. Calling out the national guard with orders to shoot at 12:30 pm. Luckily, it will take them a few hours to get down to central DC, so probably only a few hundred will die...
