The Department of Justice filed a motion to compel Apple to give the FBI what it wants.
No link needed.
Fist be damned!
So close.
Progressives beat libertarians because they are conniving cunts. The years they've spent demonizing silicon valley as part of their larger and never ending narrative that corporations are evil is going to pay off. The feds will win these legal battles and slowly get everything they want without ever having to pass any broad legislation.
Progressives beat libertarians because they only care about getting and keeping power by any means necessary.
Yes. When the only anchors in your philosophy are vague and fuzzy, it's inevitable that your boat will drift all over the seven seas. Conservatives have just the opposite problem: their anchors have long since moved to waters so deep and distant that their boat can swing in wide enough circles to encompass any harbor they find themselves in.
Some see a difference between the two. I say the only difference is what boat you are looking for at any given moment. For me, this election, I'd say judicial appointments are more important, but that harbor is also infested with moar warz and less privacy.
Nice.
This. A thousand times this.
When your only principle is "win," you beat all the other people who have restrictive principles.
Hello.
People been asking for a photo. I'm in the middle:

You're Heather Graham?
Were you high?
I liked you better in Do Not Fold, Staple, Spindle, or Mutilate.
Shorter title "Chip"
I'm in the middle.
You're the pivot man ?
Yeah, but it would have been nice.
Simple knowledge of the motion doesn't fulfill my sense of rage like a link to a story, sorry...justification, would do.
Yeah, but it would have been nice.

I mean! Come on, Reason! Seriously! This is just childish.
Super Sqrl!!
Do you still stand with him now that you know he orders the fish delight from McDonald's?
As a Catholic on a Friday during Lent, now more than ever.
That link also says Trump doesn't drink. Imagine if he did. Yeesh.
It also says Trump never lies.
No coffee, either. Fucker can't close.
Trump would either be a very mean and aggressive drunk or a sloppy sentimental hugger. both options sound terrible.
He'd be Joe Biden.
Being first isn't enough for you? You need to be second, as well? You aren't giving other members of the commentariat their fair share.
Quite your bitching and have a premade post like the rest of us.
I KNEW IT!
Comments made by puppets are often premade.
"Give"? What is this "Give" of which you speak? Isn't that restricted to kindly benevolent progressives?
Apparently the pope really touched a nerve with him.
Or, Trump made a statement and received all of the attention in advance of the state's primary. He does know how to play the media.
Better than what popes usually like to touch.
As a Catholic, you should know it is a Filet-O-Fish, not a fish delight!
i clicked in here hoping to discover the Fish Delight was some sort of secret menu, suped-up filetofish. am disappoint.
Air/Land/Sea Sandwich of go home amateur. Besides, it's HYOOGE!
What's the "Air" part of that? Does McDonald's sell quail?
Just got rid of my land line. Woo Hoo!!!
That's so 2001.
Not the way I did it. I get to keep the number I've had for 20 years, and make calls through Google Voice (for as long as GV is still around).
Set up another GV line for work and you're golden. You can tell the difference between personal and business calls. It's really convenient.
I tested it out this morning, and it's crystal clear. Do they charge for business? My residential is free (other than porting the number) when I use this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00BUV7C9A/reasonmagazinea-20/
more 1998ish
What's a land line?
Playas cell phone is carried in a briefcase.
That's what lets my toilet flush properly.
It's a thing that I never use which costs almost 40 bucks a month after you factor in fees and taxes.
how are we going to pay for the Spanish American War now?
Hopefully not with a tax on sarsaparilla.
Sioux City Sarsaparilla?
Just got rid of my land line. Woo Hoo!!!
Welcome to 2005.
1998?
I just got a landline a couple of months ago for the first time since 2002. I was more excited than for any cell phone/mobile/smartphone/tricorder that I have every got.
God, the sound quality! The luxury of that clear, intimate, high-fidelity sounds. It's such a beautiful thing. It's like installing a bidet.
Cell phones just plain don't work at my house. So I've had a land line all along. And I got my first cell phone in 2013. Mostly because I'm a weirdo.
You don't have an M-Cell/ MicroCell?
All of my cell calls go out through the internet when I'm at home.
Yeah, someday I might break down and do that. especially if work decides I need to be more available when I'm not there. But it would cost more than what I have now and I don't feel like I have a big smart-phone shaped hole in my life.
This is hard to outweirdo.
T-Mobile sent me a free signal booster. It made a huge difference. I no longer need to find that one sweet spot outside, now it works all over the house and outside too, even in snowstorms. They even mention signal boosters on their web page, and made absolutely no fuss, practically couldn't ship it fast enough.
Friends with Verizon still have to find their sweet spot and can't even turn around, have to stand stock-still while on the phone, and Verizon just laughed at them for mentioning signal boosters.
With MaBell I had to buy my own booster; now I've got 4 bars in my man cave. In addition to the traditional bar.
I have a signal booster from AT&T, but I had to pay for it.
The call goes over the internet, so it doesn't count against my minutes.
I have satellite internet, so routing telephone calls that way is a no no. This is a true signal booster and was sent with the understanding that it needs at least 3G (I think) somewhere to boost. Seems to boost other carriers too, which I suppose makes sense.
Minutes ?
Mobile phone allowance -- so much $ for so many minutes.
I learn the most interesting and useful things here.
*Steeples fingers* ... Go on.
Student activism is taking a mental and emotional toll on some of the activists.
Who activates the activists?
I dunno... Coast guard?
[Mental note: rts knows too much.]
Yeast.
I start screening intern applicants next week. The ones who make it to an interview are going to experience some mental and emotional stress.
Libertarian Rush?
"So the real question is: "Do you like the fact that the government can't read your e-mails?" (sigh) Well, if you have a phone later than the 5c, and if you're running iOS 8 or 9 (if you're running 7, it's a little different), with Apple's help, they can.
But if you're modernized, do you like the fact that the government can't crack your phone? Do you want the government to be able to crack your phone? If you do, then hate Apple for what they're doing here. If you like the fact that the government can't crack your phone, which they're tantamount admitting here, then you need to support Apple. They're the ones trying to keep people out of your phone. It's no more complicated than that, folks."
I have a Samsung flip phone. I hope I'm staying ahead of the government through obsolescence.
This is why I still have a land line?
And unless you're using some kind of crypto email system, it's nothing to hack emails in transit, and if you use any popular webmail you're totally fucked, and if you use webmail and don't access it for a few weeks, you've waived any rights.
if you use webmail and don't access it for a few weeks, you've waived any rights.
I thought that it was after 6 month, all your messages can be read?
*anything* you leave on the server for 6 months 'belongs to the provider' and so can be subpoenaed.
You think that's what the couple were using? I haven't read that.
And if not, why is the gGovt asking for Apple's help? You think they are trying to misdirect people's outrage at them being able to spy on us? Seems too cute for a G-man.
I honestly can't tell which side he is taking here.
I think he's just making mouth noises between commercial breaks.
IMO he's a stealth Apple promoter. Whenever I listen I hear him frequently talking about his Apple phone, Mac, iPad, etc. No one with an audience the size of his mentions products for free. I believe he is just following the company position on this case. It is the opposite position I would expect him to take except that it concerns Apple.
It's more like a matter of trying to keep the government from being able to require free labour from tech companies, which is a bit more important an issue, since forcing people to work without compensation, doubly bad--without consent--, is the fundamental offense against freedom.
I am less optimistic about their motives. What would it save? A few mil? Not even a rounding error in their budgets.
"To Kill a Mockingbird author Harper Lee has died. Her recently-released follow-up novel, Go Set a Watchman, is controversial?in part because it's not clear she actually wrote it."
The question wasn't if she wrote it. The question was if she actually wanted it released. We knew about the novel for years, but she didn't want to release it because she didn't feel it was perfect enough.
Truman Capote wrote To Kill A Mockingbird.
Who is Truman Capote?
Who is Tulpa?
WE are Tulpa.
No, WE are Tulpa.
I'm not!
Yes you are. DON'T DENY IT.
Come brothers and sisters, let us admit, that we are all Tulpa, and Tulpa is us all.
In regard to Kerouac's On the Road, Truman Capote said, "That's not writing, that's typing."
Yes, Crusty, we know you are a Freaks and Geeks fanatic
I do not understand the reference, but I will say I would watch you watch Linda Cardellini poop.
Truma Capote and his buddy killed some people in a cluttered house. Something like that.
That's the rumor. According to Lee, he as quite involved in editing Mockingbird and Lee never produced another significant work while Capote was more prolific.
But she was very involved with In Cold Blood. Maybe Charles Nelson Riley wrote both.
There are lots of writers that have one big hit, and then never really do anything else.
True. It's just speculation.
Just for fun, this video explains how Shakespeare wasn't really Shakespeare.
God I hate those idiots.
Interesting. I've long hear the reverse of that, that Lee wrote In Cold Blood but let Truman take credit for that. The two were thick as thieves.
she did go to KS with him to help research In Cold Blood
I love Catherine Keener
Me too. She is not that good looking but manages to be very sexy none the less.
Yes she is.
She is also in her mid fifties. When she was even a little younger, like in the 40 Year Old Virgin, she looked great, and that was ten years ago.
You should see what I looked like ten years ago.
in part because it's not clear she actually wrote it
Actually, one of the few redeeming qualities of GSW was that no one would claim it was written by Truman Capote.
I thought it was the other way around; that Lee pretty much wrote In Cold Blood.
I read "Watchman" as it was a gift.
I' so happy I didn't waste my money on it. Not knowing the backstory I mentioned to the giver that I didn't think she had written it because the writing was so shallow compared to "Kill" and that she must have been in a financial bind and whipped it out over a weekend. It's that weak.
Then I learned the backstory.
Student activism is taking a mental and emotional toll on some of the activists.
The universities should stop their racist microaggressions of assigning work to these activists and let them protest full-time and for academic credit.
That article was hilarious. "...and had to skip class for several days" College costs double now and a degree has half the meaning.
I got as far as Justice Gaines '16.
It's funny these people that argue how a highschool diploma and a college degree of any kind is meaningful because it shows that the person can stick to something and follow through to the end. Curiously, these same employers don't give much weight to military service.
Look, in the military you just do what you're told while in college you have to make the hard decisions, like 'how can I get my professor to give me another extension on my social sciences report since I blew the prep time on campaigning for the plight of Palestinean Jews living in Morrocco?'
Is that what they call partying now?
What military venture have we followed through to the end lately?
I'm following mine through the end of my contract. 57 days left!
Unfortunately, we keep trying.
Her recently-released follow-up novel, Go Set a Watchman, is controversial?in part because it's not clear she actually wrote it.
It should have been controversial because it showed Doctor Manhattan's big, blue dong.
+1 Nixon's 4th term
You leave me out of this.
That brings to mind and interesting question...
When did you get your PhD?
School of hard knocks... like the rest of us.
And it was honorary.
Wrong kind of doctor.
Oh, that kind of "doctor".
*Scratches Playa off christmas card list*
Keep your iDevices off my network.
And your dong is blue because you squeeze it too tight.
More like Dr. Teeth ?
Bolshevik Brooklyn Bernie's big brother breaks bad, blames bulbous-breaked Bubba Bill.
Does anyone in the Sanders family own a fucken comb?
Jews just stuff all their hair under that tiny little hat thing. Why bother with a comb?
That explains a lot. For what it's worth, Marx probably didn't own a comb. And yet there was some style to that mare's nest on his head.
Everybody wants to look like Einstein now.
I don't think its jews, I think its socialists.
Combs are just an oppressive capitalist tool of Big Hair Care.
There's a shortage of socialist combs, and they refuse to use combs produced by wage slaves.
You don't necessarily need a comb when children are hungry in this country.
As a result of Mayor Sanders' wise guidance, Burlington now has one communal comb that everyone uses. And they are happy about it.
And who needs 23 kinds of hair treatment?
i believe it's the affected white intellectual look. Look rumpled and disheveled, and everyone things you're brilliant.
No one thinks I am brilliant.
"Look rumpled and disheveled, and everyone things you're brilliant."
Sure, Einstein.
- 1 pair of socks
You don't need a comb with more than 47 teeth. Three are plenty.
For some reason I just felt like listening to this.
Williams College overrode its students and prevented them from bringing a conservative speaker to college.
It would have been like allowing a loaded gun on campus. Literally.
Students struggle with mental health, academic pressures as they act on social justice responsibilities
If your "social justice responsibilities" are destroying your schooling and mind, perhaps you should just become a community organizer and be done with it.
And then, PREZ!
Damnit!!
It's a faster route to President of the United States
Poor babies. Well, its a lesson in how the real world works - nobody actually *has* social 'justice' responsibilities.
At least the hippies who were fighting the system had enough motivation not to complain about the workload. They waited until they got into the private sector to sell out.
And the hippies, in their off time, knew how to have fun.
But there was a divide between the hippies, who were mostly self-absorbed, and the activists. The activists long felt that the government introduced drugs to abate the effectiveness of 'the revolution.'
Interesting. Never heard that conspiracy theory before.
Hey, we were all freelance. No govt backing.
Fuck man, kill me now.
This made me think of very large, white, furry dogs.
I have two, and they're awesome. And if they could speak, it would most certainly be triggering for these kids.
Then you will understand this.
We have one. I can't imagine multiples...
Also, they wouldn't happen to be named Boomer and Lucy, would they?
That sentence is full of typos
Ha!
Are they really going to try to go through this gender queer/neutral* pronoun thing?
*Or whatever the fuck it is
through *with* this...
They should just go with German pronouns instead.
Or better yet a language like Turkish that doesn't distinguish male or female - imagine not having to deal with this crap at all.
Look man, the paragraph before the one I quoted simply says
I imagine that the 'Justice' Gaines made an effort to point out to the reporter that these are the pronouns he or she uses. I'll give the reporter half-credit in that it looks like he's saying 'look man, this isn't my idea, crazy over here insists on it'.
I think it has less chace than ebonics did
Like vegetarianism in the 90s, this too shall pass.
Nope. The vegetarians just became vegans.
Anecdotal... I lost track of the number of friends and family that went veg in the 90s. 100% of them are back to omnivores.
Veg was relatively easy. Vegan takes commitment.
Vegans simply hate food. They besmirch the image of us fine, upstanding vegetarians.
You can make an argument for health with vegetarianism. Veganism is political.
I don't even try to make a health argument. I'm chubby and decrepit.
I don't even try to make a health argument. I'm chubby and decrepit.
Then why are you living life feeling like a rabbit crapped in your mouth, without ever knowing the joy of a perfect steak?
Panic attack= bottle of tequila, lemons, and salt
It's probably pretty stressful not knowing if their comrades are going to try and destroy them if the next derp that comes out of their mouth is not quite derppy enough. I imagine Hitler youth felt the same way.
Its probably pretty stressful knowing their comrades are going to try and destroy them if they don't keep finding alternate targets.
Its probably stressful facing a lifetime of unemployment.
No, they're cool with that.
Just move to San Fran and get your food delivered to your tent.
Move to Seattle and get free RV parking.
*Sigh*... yeah, your right. We're doomed.
Have the terrorist won yet? Do we deserve it if/when they do?
When the terrorists show up just grab a few buddies and some guns and head up to the mountains. Soon after someone will provide you with a couple of cute broads, and then you can fight the terrorists as terrorists. Terrorist on terrorist crime.

Islam is starting to sound not-so-bad.
I had a social justice responsibility. My fancy pants college had a social justice course requirement. I had to take it. Everyone took "Studies in Prejudice", a complete cakewalk.
I don't know, I feel like I'd have trouble stretching "Everything is the fault of white heterosexual men" into an entire 25-page paper
That's why you're not college material.
"Everyone took "Studies in Prejudice", a complete cakewalk"
Did you study your school's affirmative action policy?
Students struggle with mental health
No shit.
[golf clap]
They call it "social justice" because it's not justice. If it were, they'd call it "justice". They just want to call it "justice" for sentiment's sake and have the honesty to stick a nullifying adjective on it first.
Yes they do, praying to social justice five times a day is one of the pillars of Progressivism. If they don't do it, the State will cast them into flyover country for all eternity.
The sad thing is we're starting to get these types straight from high school and into the military now. We (not me, but the powers that be) just gave someone a full medical retirement for being in less than a year and was subsequently kicked out because if he was ordered to even clean the floors he would curl into a fetal position and cry.
When I was in the service you'd probably just get the Big Chicken Dinner for that.
He's not the only one, that was just the most egregious. It's getting to be really bad and we can't do anything about it. If those of us who aren't complete pussies do anything to frighten or upset somebody else, and they threaten (or commit) suicide, beat their spouse, or whatever, and make any hint that it's because you upset them earlier, you can bet your ass they'll be firing you.
"Many of his expressions clearly constitute hate speech."
Like that expression clearly constitutes hate speech.
Student activism is taking a mental and emotional toll on some of the activists.
Just wait 'til they have to keep track of all those drink orders.
Look motherfucker, I ordered an *iced* mocha-latte grande with cinnamon and *whole* milk. Where's the goddamn cinnamon?! Its not like your job is hard you know!
"I'd like another Suffering Bastard."
"I'll have two shots of hot Knob Creek and a Purple Ass In My Face"
They do frequently provide their own brand of hip-stervice.
Eh, that was kinda pun-ishing
Or that we actually care.
You don't always get what you want.?
Takes its toll being a precious snowflake.
McDonald's customers are rapists and drug dealers, while some - I assume - are good people.
And good! That kind of speech is obscene and places you closer to the Devil! Along with those haircuts!
It is "You CAN'T Always Get What You Want" you philistine.
Sorry, not my fault. I opened a ticket for the Edit button long ago and I still haven't seen anything back from IT, so....

You really want Tulpa etal to be able to come back and redo their stupidisms after the fact ?
Proofread. I know it's an archaic idea but it works even with a phone trying to make you say something you aren't trying to say.
It takes dedication.
Dedication is hard, and you're triggering me.
Ha! I told you guys I'm not a racist! It turns out I'm a "PC-ignorant SJW."
You are all things to all people like Ronald Reagan, Elvis or Jeff Foxworthy. This has nothing to do with their weird prejudices or need to rant about their own interests and has everything to do with your special superhero ability (shape-shifting).
It's you, Irish, not them. Just deal with it.
My day isn't complete until I've been called both an America hating Commie and a RWNJ.
That dude has issues.
These two things are no longer mutually exclusive.
No kidding. Rothbard is on the phone and would like to speak to Irish.
Rothbard was not a commie. He just kind of supported Communist foreign policy that one time.
Was Quizling a Nazi? Depends on how you look at it I guess.
supported Communist foreign policy that one time."
I chased women all my life and they never called me a ladies man.
I suck one dick and now I'm queer.
I think you know how to use a personal computer.

Maybe you should crack a book by Harpending first, to be fair.
Is it just me or is this a pretty weak-ass set of links? Oh yeah, Friday afternoon, I forgot.
Soave had one leg in his Prius when Gillespie stuck his head out the office window and told him to report for Links duty, so he slapped this together.

"Students struggle with mental health, academic pressures as they act on social justice responsibilities"
Uh, more truth there than the writer knows.
translation: Students piss away top-tier education to spend all their time at sit-ins to change the school's mascot and remove a statue on campus.
Real stressful, right there! Could affect the mental health of, uh, someone of extreme fragility, at least.
Snowflakes melt ; proving global warming.
For some reason I didn't find Marijuana Day at Penn State very stressful. I think they're going about it the wrong way.
xe felt pressure to help xyr peers cope with what was going on, xe said.
"Martha, would you toss this in the shredder for me? And go find me an intern who speaks English."

Posting late to say that "Yes, xir" made me gut-laugh, Rich.

"God, the Jeb Bush campaign is pitiful"
Evidently it's not horrible enough because he's losing.
Ever wonder what happened to Squiggy?
http://old.seattletimes.com/ht.....ggy16.html
Dude has a hot daughter.
Isn't she too old for you?
Only one way to find out.
Lenny and Squiggy were hilarious.
They were. And Lenny of course went on to be in Spinal Tap and the rest of those Christopher Guest movies.
And SNL and now Better Call Saul.
I loved him in Best in Show.
That was a pretty unexpectedly funny movie.
Larry Miller's part was particularly hilarious.
Buck Laughlin: Excuse me if this off the subject a little bit, but just take a guess at how much I can bench press. Come on, what do you think? Take a guess. 315 pounds, at the top of my game, maxing out at 500!
+1 eye gouged out with his thumb (they always jump)
I worked at a hotel for a few years and we hosted some dog shows. That movie doesn't exaggerate.
BUSY BEE!
I thought he went into electronics

Used Cars, a highly underrated movie.
Carnegie Mellon alum!
Is that Harper Lee in the picture?
It's Janet Yellen.
Alt-text would have been helpful but Rico seems to have just phoned this one in.
"Williams College overrode its students and prevented them from bringing a conservative speaker to college."
My favorite part of this is that it's Derbyshire. John Derbyshire has written some objectionable shit about race, but he's not exactly a threat to your students' safety. If you're too scared to hear Derbyshire speak, every day of your life must be an endless panic attack.
Fuck them. When I was in college, we had Louis Farrakahn come and speak. The man teaches that white people were created by evil scientists to destroy black people. It doesn't get much more divisive than that. And nobody tried to stop that hatemonger from coming and engaging in some first class race baiting.
Hey, have respect- the guy fought Bruce Lee.
Better: "Students with mental health issues struggle with academic pressures as they act on social justice responsibilities."
I think someone needs to take these kids aside and tell them that they'll improve the world much more by getting an education, starting a business, and employing people than they ever will with their activism bullshit.
I think someone needs to take these kids aside and tell them that they'll improve the world much more by getting an education, starting a business, and employing people than they ever will with their activism bullshit some people's purpose in life is to serve as a bad example to others. Now deal with it.
And tell them to sell out to capitalism? You monster!
That would involve too much diligence and hard work and an individual engaging in hard work may then be accused of micro-aggressing someone with their privilege. Better to not do that.
I think someone needs to take these kids aside and tell them that they'll improve the world much more by getting an education, starting a business, and employing people than they ever will with their activism bullshit.
The rewards for that are too far off. The rewards for screaming at faculty, carrying around mattresses and demanding change are damned near instant.
"The rewards for that are too far off. The rewards for screaming at faculty, carrying around mattresses and demanding change are damned near instant."
Delayed gratification is a key learning...
...in kindergarten.
This.
^This. I'm gonna say the mental health issue may have pre-dated and even predicted the SJW status.
It's astounding.
Bullshit's fleeting.
"Justice" takes its toll.
But listen closely,
Not for very much longer.
Xe's got to keep control.
Just a jump to the left...
Dear Hillary,
When you have lost Salon, you have lost crazy, hateful America.
http://www.salon.com/2016/02/1.....t_the_gop/
I like the part where the US voters will elect a socialist, 'cause social security!
It's just a logical step, Sevo. Americans like Social Security, so they'll vote for a geriatric Jewish pinko who has advocated for (among other things) a government takeover of the entire broadcasting industry!
America's most successful and beloved government programs are social insurance ? Social Security and Medicare. A highway is a shared social expenditure, as is the military and public parks and schools. The problem is we now have excessive socialism for the rich (bailouts of Wall Street, subsidies for Big Ag and Big Pharma, monopolization by cable companies and giant health insurers, giant tax-deductible CEO pay packages) ? all of which Bernie wants to end or prevent.
Yea. The real problem is corporate welfare! That's the reason for the massive debt. I'm not even sure how one thoughts links to the other here. The 'myth' being 'debunked' here is that Americans won't elect a socialist. Then they link 'social expenditures' to socialism. The problem is that most progressives and leftists today are so stupid they don't even really know what socialism is.
The rule of political and economic terms: Any political or economic term has one of only two meanings, which are "whatever I like" and "whatever I don't like."
WTF?
http://www.thedailybeast.com/a.....yment.html
The Justice Department's top watchdog is considering whether to review the legality of any payments that the U.S. government may have made for the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl and what role the FBI played in efforts to free the soldier from captivity in Pakistan, The Daily Beast has learned.
The department's inspector general, Michael Horowitz, wrote a letter to a member of Congress earlier this month saying that he had opened a "preliminary inquiry" into the matter, which concerns allegations that the U.S. government paid a ransom for Bergdahl's freedom, and that in February 2014 the FBI sent a representative to the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan expecting Bergdahl to be released.
"This work is an "important part of the academic learning experience," Ferranti said. She was present at the Brown/RISD Hillel-sponsored lecture that was protested by Students for Justice in Palestine earlier this semester, offering academic and emotional support for the protestors."
What about the emotions of the people that the Students for Justice in Palestine were heckling, insulting, and calling baby killers?
Bullies are emotionally fragile and bully people because they are insecure, broken humans with nothing of value going on in their lives. Once they hit 18, those bullies just pick up signs and start calling themselves activists.
You can't be a victim unless there is a perpetrator who made you that way. The cult of the "victim" is nothing but a cult of hatred.
"The University sends deans to activism events not only to monitor students but also to offer support for those involved. "For example, if a student is at a sexual assault event, and the student is a victim him or herself, that student might talk to me about it," Ferranti said."
Holy fucking shit, there are deans from the university effectively supporting the activists with their presence. Yeah, schools are totally apolitical though and there's no left-wing bias. I'm sure there would be deans offering support at a right-wing rally of some kind too, correct?
Have a good weekend
Thanks! You too!
Stop oppressing me with your good wishes, Shitlord.
So Williams College banned John Derbyshire, who could be construed as a white supremacist.
Stipulate that he is. (note to this lawyers: This is simply an intellectual exercise, I know he's *really* a "race realist").
Please explain to me, though, why he's a less desirable speaker at Williams College than Commie Pinko Angela Davis.
I'm inclined to the medieval Catholic university model of staging disputations where issues get subject to the most searching debate:
"Little was neglected in the effort to get to the truth. Disputation could occur before a scholarly audience, with one student arguing against a preannounced thesis, another dissecting his criticisms, and an instructor summing up the proceedings. It could be a private exercise between an instructor and his students. Or it could be conducted before the public, with the debaters taking on subjects de quolibet ("about anything at all")."
Hint - try not to harp on your feelz in one of these disputations, the medievals were all about logical rigor.
"Please explain to me, though, why he's a less desirable speaker at Williams College than Commie Pinko Angela Davis."

""Trump supporters....""
Which is weird - because you'd think if there were trump supporters reading H&R, they might have said something by now.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/wh.....rump-card/
It really does seem like Trump would command a decent number of black votes in a general election. If that is true, the Democrats are doomed. If they don't get 90% of the black vote, they can't win, period.
The Brown Daily Herald makes me want to murder babies.
Here's a Q&A with a Muslim student about Islamophobia. Good rule of thumb: Any time a person is complaining about Islamophobia, they're about to say something very stupid.
"I see the hijab as a feminist symbol as well as an expression of my faith. At 14, I noticed the disparities between the portrayals of males and females and began to understand the gender inequality present in our society. We as a society often propagate an incredibly flawed ideology that the worth of a woman lies in her beauty, her body and her sexuality. The hijab makes a statement. It says, "I don't want to be sexualized. I don't want to be objectified.""
Got that? The hijab is secretly a feminist symbol because in America we objectify women too much. Never mind that they'll beat the shit out of you in Iran or Saudi Arabia if you don't wear some sort of covering - it's still feminist and hijab related domestic battery is not something we need to consider when making this assertion.
I have been saying for years that feminists will be the first ones to take the hijab.
Also, go listen to Muslim scholars about the hijab and hear all sorts of wonderful things about how it's necessary to stop dirty harlots from leading men into sexual perdition! Plus, if a girl doesn't wear a burqa or hijab, a man might rape her and it will really be her fault for dressing like a whore!
There was a Saudi cleric recently who said little girls should wear burqas to prevent pedophile rape. Yeah though, clearly the primary reason the burqa and hijab exist is because sexual objectification is terrible and the feminist Muslims are trying to prevent that.
"Good rule of thumb: Any time a person is complaining about Islamophobia, they're about to say something very stupid."
Unfortunately this is no longer the case. Conservatives have gone to great lengths to put flesh and blood on the Islamophobia strawman.
"Never mind that they'll beat the shit out of you in Iran or Saudi Arabia if you don't wear some sort of covering - it's still feminist and hijab related domestic battery is not something we need to consider when making this assertion."
I don't think this is a good argument-the case against the Hijab shouldn't rely on punishments enforcing it by authorities. His argument is dumb but yours misses the mark.
So says the guy who still denies there were any rapes in Cologne and considers the murder or rape of a non Muslim by a Muslim to be "nothing". You are the picture of the self loathing fanatic.
"So says the guy who still denies there were any rapes in Cologne"
Stop lying.
"Unfortunately this is no longer the case. Conservatives have gone to great lengths to put flesh and blood on the Islamophobia strawman."
The term 'Islamophobia' is a terrible term for anti-Muslim bigotry. Islamophobia is the preferred term by Muslims because it allows them to claim criticism of their religion equates to bigotry. If they had to go after people who were actual bigots, they couldn't use the Islamophobia specter to bash religious opponents, ex-Muslims, and people like Sam Harris.
"I don't think this is a good argument-the case against the Hijab shouldn't rely on punishments enforcing it by authorities. His argument is dumb but yours misses the mark."
I'm confused. The point here is that she is saying the hijab is a feminist symbol, but the only reason the hijab exists is because Islamist governments will beat or imprison you for not wearing one. It isn't part of your 'culture,' it's a symbol of totalitarian brutality that many western Muslims wrongly see as part of their heritage even though it wasn't common in most of the Islamic world until the 1960s and '70s.
Veiling wasn't even common in much of the Islamic world until modern Islamists started reintroducing it.
Oh, in addition to that, if you really want to piss off an Islam apologist, point out that the hijab in most of the world is actually a symbol of Arabic warmongering and cultural imperialism. The only reason the practice spread is because of Islamic military conquest and today it's only recently been introduced to places like Indonesia through Saudi-funded madrassas.
The Arabization (largely funded by the Saudis) of Islam in Africa and East Asia has done immense damage by causing what used to be fairly moderate Islam to become much more violent and fundamentalist Islam.
One symbol of that is the spread of the hijab and yet I'm now hearing it's some kind of feminist emblem? Please.
"The Arabization (largely funded by the Saudis) of Islam in Africa and East Asia has done immense damage by causing what used to be fairly moderate Islam to become much more violent and fundamentalist Islam."
Don't doubt that. I do greatly doubt that the hijab is popular in Iran because of Saudi insistence.
"The term 'Islamophobia' is a terrible term for anti-Muslim bigotry. Islamophobia is the preferred term by Muslims because it allows them to claim criticism of their religion equates to bigotry. If they had to go after people who were actual bigots, they couldn't use the Islamophobia specter to bash religious opponents, ex-Muslims, and people like Sam Harris."
Again, this is similar to the poor argument you used against the hijab. Just because some assholes will abuse a term does not make that term invalid.
"the only reason the hijab exists is because Islamist governments will beat or imprison you for not wearing one."
You don't know that. Plenty of Muzzies wear it here in Calgary and there's no Sharia.
"Islamophobia" means hatred of a set of ideas, not a set of people. So who gives a shit? If people want to be Islamophobic, that's fucking wonderful.
""Islamophobia" means hatred of a set of ideas, not a set of people. "
That's kind of an eye-roller. Is this is a widely accepted definition?
Is it not obvious? Islam is the set of beliefs, Muslim is the person who practices them. Muslimophobia is one thing, Islamophobia is another. Both are made-up terms which moosh together Arabic and Greek roots, but eh.
Full-on indoctrination. I suppose most students ignore this crap, but it is still damaging.
"I don't want to be sexualized. I don't want to be objectified. I just want to be owned."
Finished it for him.
". The hijab makes a statement. It says, "I don't want to be sexualized. I don't want to be objectified."
I don't want to be raped by those animals in our culture who can't control their urges because I'll be blamed as well and it'll ruin my life.
FIFY
Question and Comment Time with Cytotoxic: they (and you) say that America (and its currency) is the 'prettiest horse in the glue factory'. But is it really? I am most interested in what currency is most likely a viable alternative to the USD for long-term wealth-preservation and as a reserve.
Estonia, Switzerland, and HK and Singapore probably have vastly better long-term fiscal outlooks. Are they just too small for a reserve currency?
Australia isn't small, and it has an absolutely superior (and privatized!) social security system compared to America's called superannuation. They won't go bankrupt.
Cato explains
Another article from the same guy: link text
I don't necessarily agree that America's status as 'tallest midget' will last or is even true today. It leads me to believe that the USD may fall out of favor very suddenly in the future.
Since the US, contrary to what people want you to believe, is built on domestic consumption and not an export based economy, it doesn't matter. This is especially true now that we don't import much oil.
...what? Bankruptcy and reserve currency status don't matter because domestic consumption?
Yes. Since we have a domestic economy we can buy our own debt. It doesn't matter if the world doesn't like buying our bonds, we can print our own money and buy our own. We basically owe that money to ourselves.
China has dumped a huge portion of their US bonds and it didn't effect anything.
"We basically owe that money to ourselves."
Oh I see you've gone full-retard then. Thanks for the 'Zimbabwe plan for prosperity'.
"China has dumped a huge portion of their US bonds and it didn't effect anything."
Give it time.
Zimbabwe isn't a good example. There used to be many trillionaires there, but now?
"It leads me to believe that the USD may fall out of favor very suddenly in the future."
This is profoundly stupid, and therefore par for the course.
The issue with the USD$ has little to do with near term domestic fiscal outlook, and far more to do with US market-capitalization and global capital liquidity.
Companies listed on the US stock exchanges represent half the total public market capitalization in the world, and 70% of total global profits. (or something like that.)
In other words, it is the largest "store" in the world. If you want to invest in anything, you are going to do most of it in our products and our markets.
That requires using our currency. End of story. Every financial institution in the planet therefore owns tons of US t-bills. Even if there were horrible economic policies in the US, the underlying structural facts about the global marketplace wouldn't change a whit. It could take a century for the center of gravity to change.
Your argument is just a circular bit of nonsense. "The USD is popular because America is popular with market cap". Gosh have you ever considered WHY for a fucking half-second? Maybe it has something to do with the quality of the USD compared to other currencies? Which might suffer if the US goes bankrupt?
Gilmore, you should stop trying to pretend to be smarter than you are and definitely stop trying to pretend to be smarter than me. It just makes you say dumb shit.
if you don't want people to comment on your half-baked nonsense, don't post.
if the USD weakens at all in the near term it will be because the Fed has been desperately trying to engineer some weakness into it. However the only other currencies with equal liquidity are the EUR and YEN and neither are any sexier from a fundamental POV.
Surely you'd know Estonia uses the Euro.
Oh wow look someone who can actually make a good point.
pointing out you don't know what you're talking about is the same point everyone is generally making.
"God, the Jeb Bush campaign is pitiful"
While not news to anyone...
... he's spent $150m (more than anyone except hillary) and is running dead last in the latest NBC poll
But people are so sure that money wins elections. They don't need evidence or anything like that. They just feel it in their bones or something.
Just think how poorly Jeb would be doing had he *not* spent all that money.
Well, he probably would be where Rand Paul is right now. But the end result is the same. All of the pearl clutching earlier in the primaries over how Republican candidates were only staying alive because of big donors basically amounted to anger that there were too many voices having a say.
God, the Jeb Bush campaign is pitiful
Hey, anyone seen buttplug around lately?
He's busy trying to save up the $20 he owes Reason for a lost bet.
Right, like he going to pay.
OK, it's weekend, time for some trolling. Because sometimes you just can't wait for Saturday.
Questioning Circumcision Is Common Among Young Jews In America
"Young Jewish parents in the USA are bucking historical trends on this questionable surgery. Articles about or mentioning Jewish opposition to circumcision have appeared recently in a variety of Jewish papers, websites, and blogs including the Jewish Daily Forward, JewSchool, Jweekly, TheJC.com, Jewish Journal, Jewish Business News (Israel) and Ynet Jewish World.
"Young Jewish parents are working with supportive Jewish clergy to create ritual alternatives.
"Mark Reiss, MD., a Jewish doctor and influential intactivist manages a list of more than 130 Rabbis (plus many cantors and other Jewish leaders) all over the world (including the US, UK, and Israel), who officiate at Jewish covenant ceremonies without circumcision."
So you believe in God but believe that circumcision is inward and spiritual, not an outward ceremony.
There's a group which believes the same...check them out.
There's a joke in their somewhere...

US Bombing Libya Again
Its not so much that I object to bombing jihadis as a rule - but rather am irritated that the media has steadfastly ignored places like Libya (or Afghanistan, or Yemen, or...) or anywhere else that Obama's Foreign Policy approach of "stir shit up from a distance" has resulted in complete and utter disaster... and only pops back in every few months to express surprise that another civil war has been raging in places we had been pretending to "help".
"anywhere else that Obama's Foreign Policy approach of "stir shit up from a distance" has resulted in complete and utter disaster"
His policy is bad but there is really no reason to believe Libya or Yemen would be better off if he hadn't done anything. Obama is not as big a deal as the trends sweeping the Arab world.
You think Gaddafi would have fallen without US help?
A big maybe.
Yeah really. Gaddafi was a POS like all ME dictators, but he had given up his WMD program and terrorism. Much better to have complete anarchy and safe space for terrorists.
"A Civil War film based on the diaries of a Union soldier opens in theaters Feb. 12. It looks at the Civil War through the eyes of a man who went to war to free slaves and was freed by them....
"Slave Jim Young helped them escape and got the soldiers on the Underground Railroad where slaves along the line helped the men get to New Bern."
But don't get your hopes up, this isn't the Jim who was on the Mississippi River.
Oops, the film's release is postponed to April 22.
But I believed the Lost Causers who claimed slaves were treated well, loved their masters, and actually took up arms against the Yankees when massa was shot during battle. This slave Jim Young is an obvious traitor to his
country, his masters, and his own race.

Alligator is damn delicious. I'd take some gator etoufee over anything on the Wendy's menu.

After spending what seems like hours trying to make dinner plans with married people, I have come to the conclusion that as a collected group all those who are married are worse than Nikki.
Why are you even trying to make dinner plans with married people? Shouldn't you be out trying to attain a female of your own?
I have plans to disappoint a sexually disappoint a woman later tonight. I figured since I was in the area, I would invite a friend out for a drink, maybe dinner. Now I have to pick up a pregnant woman, and I am involved in an ongoing married couple text dispute. Let me whine!
You won't disappoint her. She'll disappoint herself.
Well that's what you get for thinking, Crusty. What have you learned?
Not enough, apparently.
