Finally, You Can Sing "Happy Birthday to You" Without Owing Royalties
After 3 years of battling in court, Warner Music and its affiliates that held the rights to "Happy Birthday to You" agreed to return the song to the public domain. Under the tentative settlement, they will drop their claims to future royalties from the copyright and pay $14 million to those who have had to fork over licensing fees to use the song in the past.
Originally recorded in 1893 by Mildred and Patty Hill as "Good Morning to All," the birthday-themed lyrics of the modern tune were published in 1911. The central dispute in this case was whether and to whom the Hills had transferred the rights to the original tune.
The judge ruled that, since the original copyright on the song expired in 1949 and the Hills' publisher had never acquired the rights to the lyrics, Warner's current copyright is not valid. As such, the agreement adds, "All parties believe the song will be in the public domain on the final settlement date."
In December, Reason TV took a look at another side of copyright law that is particularly important for journalists, filmmakers, and musicians: fair use. Watch below to see how South Park saved this important protector of free speech.

Nice.
It's funny. And then you scroll.
I keep telling myself that this should not be complicated.
You know what else isn't complicated? Rape!
I've seen that joke, Eddie. You did it all wrong.
You know who else was an uncomplicated metaphor for violating boundaries?

Hey did you guys hear about Scalia?
No??!!!![can't wait for the punchline!]
Who?
Great! Now I can finally go out to a restaurant for my birthday and not have to be subjected to some abomination of a restaurant birthday song.
-Honey, we're going to Denny's for your birthday!
-I want a divorce.
You're a fellow Februarian?
March, actually.

All *birthday* parties, anyway.

GOD DAMN I hate that word.
Wow, that invoked a strong reaction.
Crap..wrong link.

South Park is brilliant social and political satire even if most people seem to enjoy it for entirely different reasons.
The musical numbers are fab.
After months of deliberation and scrimping, I'm finally ready to pull the trigger. This is probably overkill for my primary passion, FO4, but I'm also keen on the new Deus Ex sequel.
I've been looking at a GeForce 970 too, as my current GFX card is getting long in tooth.
I really went nuts over the past couple weeks trying to convince myself that I need rather than merely really really want a pricey 1440 IPS display with gsync capable of pushing 144hz refresh rate. I mean, the thing is beautiful. I'm still not over if. But I would need a 980ti to even begin pushing enough frames to justify that investment, which puts me solid grand over budget. And even then I wouldn't be pushing more frames than the 970 on 1080p if I overclock the display.
I've been debating on getting a new MB and CPU.
Midway through last year I bought a new GPU - but the old MB wouldn't recognize it and as it was an OEM I couldn't get a BIOS update. So I bought a new MB. But I kept the original CPU with the intention of upgrading it a few months later.
Well, it turns out Intel changes sockets every couple of years so the current MB is not compatible with any CPU made after 2014 so when I got around to replacing the CPU I had to stick with an older model.
So I'm debating simply eating the costs and buying a current gen CPU with MB - even more so since I got a second 970 but can't get the damn MB to recognize it in SLI mode even though the MB is supposed to do SLI *and* the GPUs are completely identical - same manufacturer, same type, same chipset, same everything.
That's good to know. I'm coming from a five year old iMac. The last gaming PC I owned I had built for me almost ten years ago, when SLI was only recently a thing. And ultimately I'm going to get another 970 when I end up needing it.
My understanding is that you don't really need a current gen CPU. You could upgrade to the previous "Devil's Canyon" system and not see much of a difference (and keep your DDR3 RAM; current gen requires upgrading to DDR4, which is not much of an improvement). I think the DC CPU also runs on the previous Haswell socket, so the MBs have been around even longer and had more time to drop in price (and until a few months ago were the standard, so dual 970s should work). An i5-4690k and MB could probably be had for $300. I have a i5-2500k from 2011, and it's still performing beautifully, game-wise.
Very nice. I got the MSI 970 last fall (the 100me version, with a backplate), and it's yet to have any trouble with MGS5 or The Witcher 3, at mostly ultra settings on 1080p. Every now and then I'm also tempted by a 1440p monitor, and a higher refresh rate, but nah. This is sufficient, and like you say, I'd need a 980ti or a second 970 to maintain the high settings.
The Witcher 3 is really, really gorgeous, btw. And the new Deus Ex does look great.
No live tweet?
Oh, Saturday night...cocktail parties.
It's a big holiday weekend for them. Presidents' Day.
Every night is a cocktail party at my house.
Appletini anyone?
There is a git from New Jersey that I don't know crashing on my couch, and he's drinking all of my beer. Cocktails are all I have left.
I hope it's not Chris Christie.
Cut me some slack. Though he has a similar build.
OT: Jerry Brown concern-trolls:
Yeah. Jerry Brown is totally not engaging in cynical politics right now.
But that's OK *now*.
1. But mom! He hit me first!!111!!!!
2. He's a Democrat, they're always in the moral right because they have good intentions.
They care. Do you care?
It's different when Jerry does it, he has the magical 'D' after his name.
Right, b/c Obama wasted NO TIME announcing he would nominate a replacement.
Trump suggested he'd negotiate an alliance with Russia.
I have no doubt Trump would negotiate an alliance with Russia - where would the US fit into it, though?
Isn't there a GOP debate going on right now? Where the hell's the drunk-blogging channel on this thing?
I was geared-up for a live-tweet event.
If you really want you can see the tweets Reason use for those right here.
I thought the queer emoji for the straight guy story was important, but now that I know I can sing Happy Birthday, I can't understand why people are talking about anything else.
Oh God, STFU Jeb!.

Who gave the drunk tweeters the night off? Can we replace them with some foreign tweeters for less money?
Who, oh who, can supply the place of the drunk tweeters?
