Indonesia Worried These Same-Sex Emojis Will Make You Gay

The planet's largest Muslim country working to ban LGBT expression to protect the children.

Indonesia is home to the planet's largest Muslim population—and to a government that is willing to squelch controversial expression that runs afoul of prevailing attitudes toward gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and trans residents.

The latest targets, according to The Stack via Slashdot, include

emojis, stickers and emoticons which depict same-sex couples, the rainbow flag, and any symbol that symbolises the lesbian, bay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Apps that have been targeted by the demands include the popular Asian messaging app LINE, Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter.

"Such contents are not allowed in Indonesia based on our cultural law and the religious norms and the operators must respect that," said Ismail Cawidu, a spokesperson for the Indonesian Communication and Information Ministry.

Homosexuality isn't illegal in most parts of Indonesia, mind you, but Cawidu says that kids might dig brightly colored stickers and emojis and the next thing you know, you've got a full-blown Tinky Winky situation on your hands.

More here.

This is all sad and stupid, especially for Indonesians in the Aceh province, which adheres to sharia law. There, you can be caned for having gay sex. But given the spread of communications tools, it's also clear that such prohibitions are not only doomed to fail but self-evidently useless upon first being imposed. Which of course, just makes them sadder and stupider.

This is all sad and stupid, especially for Indonesians in the Aceh province, which adheres to sharia law. There, you can be caned for having gay sex.

Hmm. Can you be caned for having masochistic sex?

    1. Notorious UGCC   9 years ago

A riddle worthy of a Zen master.

      1. Agammamon   9 years ago

A masochist and a sadist are having an affair.

In the bedroom the masochist cries 'hurt me, hurtme!'

The sadist stands there and says 'no.'

Emojis are horrible and should only be used to torture prisoners and Cytotoxic.

    1. d3x / dt3   9 years ago

Even Cytotoxic should not be subjected to such torture! It only brings madness.

    2. Cytotoxic   9 years ago

      Hey! That's mean!

I feel like i should protest H&R's emoji-free, lack-of-edit-button, comments section which represses my ability to express my full range of demi-sexual emoticons and animated-GIF-eyerolls.

I was saving this to ask for Tonio's opinion regarding its humor value to him personally, but now I'll just offer it to you (and everyone else) since it is election season in the U.S.:
              The Debate

One candidate is against LGBT (inter alia) and is called out by his opponent for being a closet homosexual. There are subtitles, but unlike the other skits I've provided for this particular troupe, I doubt you'll need to do very much reading to understand the comedy.

  8. AddictionMyth   9 years ago

Indonesia still executes people for low level drug crimes. But yeah, let's get all butthurt over gay emojis.

    Antonin Scalia is dead.

  12. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

    Scalia died.

    1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

The way I initially heard it, it sounded like a hunting accident. Thank Dog it wasn't that.

The last thing we need is Obama appointing a replacement for Scalia. Although it might be better than if Bernie did so.

      We are so screwed.

      1. __Warren__   9 years ago

Maybe he can appoint Lou Reed.

        1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

          I'd rather have Ted Nugent.

          1. Charles Easterly   9 years ago

            Abe Vigoda.

      2. BigT   9 years ago

You think the Senate would approve an Obama appointee?

Finding a strict constructionist will be tough.

        1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

Why we Obama bother finding a strict constitutionalist?

He'll find a gun grabbing, fetus hating, social justice warrior and be done with it.

And if the Senate doesn't take the first one, he'll just send them another.

        2. Jerry on the rocks   9 years ago

Let's just wait a year so that Cruz can nominate Richard Epstein.

          1. OneOut   9 years ago

Maybe Trump can appoint Cruz ?

          2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

It should make the appointment an election issue, and that probably doesn't bode well for Republicans.

  13. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

I thought I knew what was really important, but gay emojis for Indonesians wasn't on my list anywhere.

Meanwhile, Putin is flirting with restarting the Cold War, and why not? Since Obama is such a sissy.

    1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

      +Scalia died.

      Oh shit.

      1. Mickey Rat   9 years ago

Freedom of speech and press had a good run.

      3. commodious spittoon   9 years ago

Just how eagerly is Congress going to roll over for Obama's appointee? I can't imagine the failure theater we're going to spectate for the next several months.

        1. VG Zaytsev   9 years ago

The pubes would rubber stamp a VI Lenin nomination.

          1. JeremyR   9 years ago

Yeah, but the Dems would never nominate him since he's a white male.

            1. Charles Easterly   9 years ago

              A white male?

              Will he be Irish?

              Doby Mick?

I apologize to anyone who wants to be apologized for.

      4. Slammer   9 years ago

What an asshole move, dying like that, Scalia. Couldn't you think about the country???

        1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

How callous of us to think about how Supreme Court justices dying might effect our rights and liberties--on a libertarian website, no less.

We should all be ashamed of ourselves. Especially when the Indonesians are discriminating against gay emojis with impunity!

  14. VG Zaytsev   9 years ago

Scalia died, we're about to get Bern'd good and hard.

    1. Jerry on the rocks   9 years ago

If you like your mandatory union dues, you can keep your mandatory union dues.

      1. JeremyR   9 years ago

That's probably the least awful thing that is going to happen

      2. Eman   9 years ago

doesnt them being mandatory mean you have to give them to the union?

    2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

Driving home just now, I saw a Bernie Sanders 2016 bumper sticker on an SUV. On the other side was a faded ribbon sticker with "Support the Troops" written on it.

There is an excellent article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday--no paywall.

      http://www.wsj.com/articles/do.....1455290458

Regardless of whether people should support Trump for those reasons, I think those are the reasons people support him.

That article could have written about Sanders, too. They're both doing well for the same reasons. I bet if Bernie stumbles in the primaries, Trump will pick up a lot of his supporters--and visa versa.

  15. JeremyR   9 years ago

Welp, goodbye guns, goodbye free speech.

    1. JeremyR   9 years ago

And Hello to double your energy bill!

    2. Dances-with-Trolls   9 years ago

Suddenly gay Indonesian emojis are the least of my worries.

    3. Je Suis Reason (Fmr. AuH20)   9 years ago

      My exact thoughts.

Ugh. It was a really chill, good Saturday too.

To go glass half full, some police state shit in terms of searches may be put right. Criminal justice shit may move in a better direction

  16. Domestic Dissident   9 years ago

Time to go buy some more guns and a shit ton more ammunition.

  17. Je Suis Reason (Fmr. AuH20)   9 years ago

Also... I should avoid any and all lefty sites so I don't puke at them celebrating scalias death, right?

    1. Winston   9 years ago

      Oh boy...

And say goodbye to the first two amendments...

  18. Warty   9 years ago

Lots of Republicans here. You all remember what "new professionalism" comes from, right? Scalia did at least as much harm as good.

    1. Episiarch   9 years ago

Warty, you just need to put on your TEAM colored glasses.

I'm giving you a choice: either put on these glasses or start eatin' that trash can.

      1. Warty   9 years ago

I'm all out of bubble gum.

    2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

The question is, "What will replace him?"

      It's gonna be worse, right?

If we ever get a an SC Justice as awful as Scalia again, we'll be really lucky.

    3. Adans smith   9 years ago

I do,but still,a far left SCJ with the other 4 does not bode well for the country. I do believe the 1st and 2nd will be watered down, maybe become more 'European" and forget reining in the EPA.

    4. Winston   9 years ago

I think the point is that Citizen's United and Heller were both 5-4 decisions that Scalia concurred with and Obama will likely appoint a Justice opposed to both and so both decisions can now be overturned.

      1. Je Suis Reason (Fmr. AuH20)   9 years ago

Heller I worry about a little bit less because guns are still ok in a lot of states without it. It's more that Calis, the NYs, etc. can become bigger shitholes.

CU... I will say this: the conservative justices have, as a practical matter, respected the core of Roe and kept abortion legal. The liberals show no such respect or deference to either precedence or divisive decision- they are on the right side of history, after all.

It's why I guess when it comes to the Supremes, I do have a conservative bias, just because when given the chance to overturn Roe, they haven't. Same for Griswold. Meanwhile, I can't think of a conservative case that the liberals politically hate but their Justices seem unwilling to overturn.

        1. Robert   9 years ago

Heck, if I were an appeals judge, I'd just say, "You win", "You lose," & not say anything else. If it was a matter I cared about, I'd ignore precedent & anything else in my way.

          1. Robert   9 years ago

I see no reason to "play fair" w people's lives & interests.

    5. Je Suis Reason (Fmr. AuH20)   9 years ago

Warty, I agree. It was just more an immediate, "Fuck, we were going a good direction on guns and speech with him." And yeah, the replacement may roll back some of the police state, but at the cost of the state restricting two key ammendments. Which sucks.

My ideal SC death/replacement has been RBG with Janice Rogers Brown for a while now. Janice Rogers Brown isn't perfect, but she regularly bashes the New Deal. So that's kickass

    6. MJGreen - Docile Citizen   9 years ago

Steel yourself for many more "vote for the Republican!" scolds this year, now that there is an open SCOTUS spot for the next pres.

The technology is so developed that we can watch videos, live streaming, TV serials and any of our missed programs within our mobiles and PCs. Showbox
All we need is a mobile or PC with a very good internet connection. There are many applications by which we can enjoy videos, our missed programs, live streaming etc.
