Squirrel left thousands without power in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A squirrel caused a 40-minute power outage according to Public Service Company of Oklahoma.

The outage, caused by a squirrel that made its way into Tulsa power substation, affected about 5,500 customers including six Tulsa Public School buildings.

NEW YORK, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A camera drone filming the Empire State Building in New York crashed into the 40th floor of the skyscraper and fell to a 35th flood landing, police said.

Sean Nivin Riddle tweeted Thursday that his drone was "stuck on the Empire State Building" and he was speaking with security about the issue.

Police confirmed Riddle was flying his drone close to the skyscraper Thursday and crashed into the 40th floor, causing the drone to fall to a 35th floor landing.

Police and the FBI responded to the building and Riddle was arrested while speaking to security about recovering his drone.

Riddle was charged with reckless endangerment and navigation in and over New York City.

New York crane collapse kills at least one person

A large construction crane has collapsed in lower Manhattan in New York City, killing one person and injuring at least two others.

The Fire Department of New York confirmed the fatality and is on the scene responding to the accident.

The collapse happened along West Broadway early on Friday morning in the Tribeca neighbourhood.

The downed crane, which filled the street, fell onto numerous parked cars.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the victim was sitting in a parked car at the time of the accident, and that it was caused by high winds.

Workers were in the process of lowering the crane due to the high winds when it collapsed. No workers were injured.

I'm not the biggest Italian-eater, and the places i like best in the city are all fairly small storefront restaurants in the village/LES. they're just a more pleasant environment than some big popular place that serves 1000 people a day. I was reading the idiotic NYT article on the alleged immorality of football, and I ventured into the comments section. While there are a few brave souls trying to steer the rest towards sanity, it's mostly a pulsing, writhing mass of derp.

A lot of commenters seem to think that American football is the only violent sport on Earth. I guess they've never seen a game of rugby before and truly believe that those oh-so-civilized Europeans spend their free time with noble, intellectual pursuits.

I agree 100 percent that it's bullshit what cronyism goes on between the NFL and city governments. But the article seems to be attacking the very idea of having football as a televised sport. The entire premise seems to be, "football players are enslaved and suffer lifelong injuries and disabilities, so anyone who watches the game is a bad person."

But IF we disposed of bullshit like taxpayer-funded stadiums, and IF football were just made up of voluntary players knocking heads for the amusement of voluntarily-paying fans, there would be absolutely nothing morally wrong with it.

There was this weird period where the Nissan Leaf briefly attracted status-minded drivers before the Teslas came out and hoovered them up. Dorky looking EVs flooring it to cut people off in traffic was intensely confusing.

The resale value of a Leaf is abysmal. On an interesting note I saw someone drive their Tesla to the ski area. The parking lot attendant was really cool about letting him plug in. But it was RWD, no chains, and frankly a terrible vehicle for the conditions. If they ever become popular we're gonna have problems.

RWD isn't inherently bad

Yes. If you have decent tires and aren't stupid about how you drive, you can do well with RWD in snowy or icy conditions. I have a Genesis and in the winter I have Nokian tires. Last year we had some freezing rain come in early in the season. Going up a hill while tying to get home in the icy mess, I passed an Audi with all four wheels spinning.

Really? Huh, of all the electrics it'd probably be the one I'd get, if I were to get an electric.

I think the problem with resale value on the leaf is the battery pack. If you are nearing the end of life on the battery pack, the replacement cost is huge relative to the value of the car. I think it is around 6 or 7 grand. Plus there was no supply at all for quite a while, not sure if that has resolved.

Hence, a very low value proposition for someone looking to buy. Plus, you don't get any tax subsidy, so that knocks off some of the value as well. It looks like there are piles of 2012 leafs available for just under $10k. Similar to a 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback. So it looks like you would pay a small premium for the EV, but then knock of a few grand for the amortized battery pack remaining, coming up with something with a resale value about 20% below par.
