Credit: StumpSource / photo on flickr If you're not excited about the Iowa caucuses tonight, this link will probably not make you any more excited. Nevertheless, prepare for intensifying news coverage.
- President Barack Obama wants Congress to fund a $4 billion program to increase availability of computer science classes in public schools.
- A citizen in Southern Florida, with an amazing amount of guts, chased and pulled over a police officer for speeding. She has so far survived the experience.
- Chicago saw 51 homicides in January, the highest number for that month since the year 2000.
- An Egyptian cartoonist whose works sometimes criticize the ruling government was arrested for running an unlicensed website.
- Cuban leader Raul Castro is in France, visiting Europe in the first trip from a Cuban leader there in two decades.

France sucks.
FRENCH DEMOLISH MIGRANT CHURCH, MOSQUE AT MIGRANT CAMP
Mais oui?
"After allowing believers one last chance to pray, French authorities demolished a makeshift church and mosque Monday as part of a security operation at a camp in Calais populated by thousands of migrants.
Authorities are trying to re-establish order in the long-lawless camp, and Monday's operation was the culmination of a two-week effort to clear a 100-meter security zone around the perimeter of the camp, a regional official said."
Nothing makes people more orderly than destroying their houses of worship.
Something something "rivers of blood".
Something something The Camp of the Saints.
Did the French have to call in the Israelis to show them how it's done? Are the French honorary Zionists now? Anybody try to stop a bulldozer with their face?
After years of Euro-sneering and hyperventilating about "apartheid walls", it is delicious irony to see that when the Euros experience a morsel of what the Israelis have had to put up with for 7 decades, they waste no time in devolving into pitchfork-wielding savages.
Amen to that.
+1
Except the Europeans have been there all along and the migrants are, well, migrants. In Israel, the Palestinians have been there all along and most Israelis are either migrants or children of migrants. Just saying.
Been there all along? What are the Romans, Moors, and Vikings - chopped liver?
Horatio, it appears you forgot to mention the Goths.
You best mention the Goths, son
Except the Europeans have been there all along and the migrants are, well, migrants. In Israel, the Palestinians have been there all along and most Israelis are either migrants or children of migrants. Just saying.
Saying what? This bit of moral wrangling doesn't seem to explain anything relevant to what HM said. Never mind that it's a gross simplification of a complex history to the point of caricature.
Just as I thought. It is the camp at Calais. It couldn't get any worse, so I doubt this will.

Happy $19 trillion National Debt Day everybody!!
Thanks a lot, Obama. Heck of a job.
"Well, thanks. But I couldn't have done it alone. Thanks goes to the GOP congress as well. You know, the people who actually pass spending bills?"
Yep. But my question is: why did some so-called "libertarians" here at Reason get all hysterical at the republicans during the so-called "shutdowns"?
Becuz...rodez?
Suderman has a domestic life to look to. He can't really afford to alienate the waifu with principles or anything icky like that.
Because it was an expensive stunt.
Xerox also deserves a special mention.
Bullcrap. Nice try, but you're going to have to do a heck of a lot better than that.
So it didn't cost money?
How about you put forth a benefit of the shutdown. I haven't done my taxes yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll still run into those PPACA questions.
You can't blame the shutdown for that. That's the downside to ending the shutdown.
That can't be right. Shriek says the deficit is smaller than it was when his Messiah took office.
And deficit = debt. I learned that from my Obot friends.
Speaking of that deficit, it you look at that link, you may note that we hit $18 trillion on December 15, 2014. So, it only took about thirteen and a half months for it to go up another trillion dollars.
What are we being told that the annual deficits supposedly are these days? I think they keep telling us that it's "only" around $450 billion to $500 billion? That math sure doesn't seem to add up to me.
Maybe we can't keep up with the interest payments now.
Oh, the math adds up alright. It adds up to - we are completely and royally fucked.
What are we being told that the annual deficits supposedly are these days? I think they keep telling us that it's "only" around $450 billion to $500 billion? That math sure doesn't seem to add up to me
When you look at the "Debt to the Penny" charts for the last two years, you'll note that their are a couple of periods where the government was essentially out of money/at the debt ceiling and the Treasury had to play shell games for months to not go over the debt limit. When the raise in the debt limits were approved, the national debt suddenly skyrockets by about $250-300 billion overnight--the catch is that the increase is never reflected in the annual deficit numbers. So the spending was actually higher than reported, it's just that the Treasury doesn't include the massive immediate debt increase in the annual deficit calculations.
Include the moonshot and the "real" deficit last FY was actually about $600 billion or so.
Heck of a job, Brownie?

That is just bizarre.

Cops train eagles to attack drones mid-air amid fears they could hit people and crash into planes
Next: Eagles train drones to attack cops. Or something.
I hate the fuckin' eagles, man.
Calm down. Take it Easy.
I can't tell you why he feels that way.
Glenn Fry is not amused.
Santa Claus' sleigh is not a drone, thank you very much.
If they've got eagles catching drones in mid-air, I know the first thing anybody with a drone wants to get a video of - a POV video of an eagle catching a drone in mid-air. Second thing is a POV video of an eagle attempting to catch a drone equipped with a spray bottle of eagle repellant.
Tolkien already did it.
If everyone who comments here doesn't immediately buy and utilize this product, then I really don't know who you people are anymore.

Why would I need that? I can make my own.
Then this is for you.

Tremendous.
Chicago saw 51 homicides in January, the highest number for that month since the year 2000.
They should really fight for more gun control there.
But they can just go into Indiana for guns. So we do need more gun control!
The cops only killed 51 people this month?
[golf clap]
What do you expect? It was the hottest month in the history of the world.
Since the Iowa Caucus thread was so thin:
The caucus is the place where the party elects members of the county party. This has legal ramifications. In the event of a special election, only the people elected at caucus are allowed for vote in the nominating process for Republican candidates running in special elections (state elections, but not federal elections)
Delegates to the county convention are also selected at the caucus. It is supposed to be an election, but anyone willing to pay the entrance fee will get approved to go to the county convention. The county convention elects delegates to the district convention (again anyone willing to pay), and the district elects delegates to the state convention. The state convention elects delegates to the national convention (this is a real election, but mostly determined by who paid to get into the state convention). So the "winner" of the nominating process is whoever can convince the most people to pay to get into three separate conventions held over 3+ months.
And then there is this little piece of business called the "straw poll". Apparently, the vast majority of the nation is stupid enough to care what the results of the straw poll are.
Not our fault.
Serious question: Is there a time limit to the Democratic "convincing" portion?
You'll have to ask a Democrat. 😉
*** ducks out to find one, returns ***
She feels there is none.
I thought they changed the process to have the delegate apportionment look like the straw poll after Ron Paul carried the delegation in 2012.
The national party has imposed rules on the state party requiring the delegate to represent the straw poll results (some kind of proportional representation). I have no clue how that can happen unless it happens at the state convention.
Never having lived in a caucus state, I never understood why the hell people would ever want to live/vote in a caucus state. It sounds freaking horrible every time I hear the process described.
The caucuses and subsequent conventions also elect state and local party officials. In 2012, the Paul organization took almost every state-level party office.
The national organization was worried the state party would fuck with the system to improve Rand Paul's results in 2016. However, Rand fucked his own campaign over long before the state party had a chance to throw its weight around.
Weren't there also some reindeer games were the RNC preemptively declared Romney to be the winner, only to have it turn out that it was Santorum in a recount?

25% of Federal Employees Would Consider Quitting Their Jobs If Trump Is Elected President
In recent news, everyone who lives in America moved to Canada after X election.
And all of my Facebook "friends" have emigrated to Denmark.
Yeah, the "would consider" when polled is pretty weak tea.
...to be immediately replaced by the kind of people who would work for Donald Trump.
Would an IRS staffed with completely incompetent white supremacists really hurt anyone? Most of those people won't be able to do math, so it's not like they'll be able to harass minorities with audits or anything.
Did you put in your application yet?
Totally. I was like "Random internet commenters called me a racist for pointing out disparities in punishment doesn't prove those disparities are caused by racism" and the KKK members were like "whoa, you're hardcore even by our standards."
I like how you were able to turn that around and make yourself the hero. Yeah. That's probably exactly the way it happened.
That basically is what happened. I said "African Americans do commit proportionately more crimes than other people, therefore disparities in punishment don't prove racism by cops." You then said "HURR DURR, YOU HATE DARKIES."
You also made some ridiculous argument about how I was acting like the system can never be wrong, when in fact I started the conversation by saying it's a travesty *anyone* should be punished for not wearing a seatbelt - thus showing I know the system can be flawed and terrible, just that the evidence presented was not sufficient to show that the problem in this instance was racism.
I also don't think I'm a hero. I think I made a reasonable point and was unfairly impugned. Defending myself against insults does not make me a hero. Aren't you the one pretending to be a hero by purposefully misconstruing peoples' arguments in order to pretend you're combating racism?
Don't blame other people.
It was me.
Somebody gets mugged in New York every forty seconds. That poor bastard.
You think current IRS employees can do math?
Like McDonalds cashiers can make change...
Would an IRS staffed with completely incompetent white supremacists really hurt anyone be noticeably different?
Here I was hoping they'd be replaced with nothing.
Holy shit. If this could actually happen I would vote for the Donald in a heartbeat.
If I thought 25% of Fed employees actually would quit their jobs, I'd vote for Trump.

I believe it has been pointed out that the sole reason the Iowa caucus is a big deal was because Jimmy Carter finished second to Uncommitted delegates in 1976 and made a big deal about and so everyone makes a big deal about.
And if the Iowa caucus is a handout then isn't the entire primary season a handout?
Yes, Jimmy Who? came in second place in 1976 and established a new paradigm.
The caucuses receive no direct funding from the state (except schools are frequent meeting sites for the caucuses).
Primaries in most states are funded by the government and represent a direct subsidy to the two major parties.
I think I'm starting to understand Iowa a little better - caucuses are the direct action of the proletariat expressing the will of the people, right? Why the hell would anybody consider an endorsement by these people anything to be proud of?
When has throwing money at schools, especially federal money, ever not worked?
Obama wants more computer science funding? What the hell? Those STEM fields are worthless and the realm of white CIS shitlords, we need more gender studies! The Koch brothers and big computer have done bought our president!
We need that for muslim outreach, don't you know.
I'm sure the 4 billion dollars will come with gender (and racial) strings attached. Satisfied?

It's a good one, but it would have been nice to see that comment on the table five minutes earlier.
I'll admit that I leisurely strolled into this thread, only planning to post the Archer link below. I didn't anticipate that you'd be AWOL and that I'd comprehend today's links.
What kind of computer science are we talking here? Keyboarding? Like what all the people at McDonald's are trained to do in about 4 hours? Maybe some Microsoft Office and Excel that'll qualify you for data-entry jobs paying slightly more than McDonald's? Most of the kids already know how to use a computer and beyond that, what specific skills do you need? This idea that computers are the future and everybody needs to know everything about computers is about as silly as suggesting a hundred years ago cars were the future so everybody needs to know how to rebuild an engine. Sure, there are tons of good-paying jobs if you know how to write code and troubleshoot systems, but not everybody needs to or wants to get into all that. If your job entails operating a computer, there are software programs that you need to learn how to use but they're pretty specific to the job and they're not that hard to be trained on how to use them. Operating a CNC lathe in the tool and die shop doesn't require you to be a computer scientist and I'm not sure anybody considers a machinist to be one.

#5 is the "not." All the Woolworth's lunch counters in the South were white-only at the time.
1790 - The Supreme Court of the United States convened for the first time, in New York City
And immediately disappeared into obscurity for 13 years.
1968 - During the Vietnam War, a Viet Cong officer was executed with a pistol shot to the head by Saigon's police chief and the image captured in a famous news photograph.
Not to excuse the shooting, but I read somewhere that the police chief's brother had been killed by Viet COng guerillas about an hour earlier.
The story you don't hear about that photo is that the guy being shot in the head had just been discovered setting fire to a pile of bodies of women and children he had just killed.
http://rarehistoricalphotos.co.....igon-1968/
"South Vietnamese sources said that L?m commanded a Vietcong death squad, which on that day had targeted South Vietnamese National Police officers, or in their stead, the police officers' families. Corroborating this, L?m was captured at the site of a mass grave that included the bodies of at least seven police family members. Photographer Adams confirmed the South Vietnamese account, although he was only present for the execution. Lem was the leader of a Vietcong death squad who was captured after killing a SVN General and his family that morning, among others. He was brought to Loan who questioned him briefly then using his personal .38 revolver, executed L?m in front of AP photographer Eddie Adams and NBC television cameraman Vo Suu.

A little memorial: Buster Keaton - The Art of the Gag.
The worlds first electronic digital computer was the Atanasoff-Berry Computer. Those hacks at Penn were years too late.
Etchings found in one of the pyramids suggest the ancient Egyptians invented the electronic digital computer, using a system of clay pots filled with bees and tied to cat's tails and then set on fire. Reconstructions of the device by modern archeologists show it worked only slightly better than an Apple III so there is some debate as to whether or not it qualifies as a working computer.
Not reprogrammable and not Turing-complete. A glorified calculator. Useful, and worthy of note, but not a computer in the modern sense.
1979 - Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Tehran after 15 years of exile.
Although he succeeded in destroying President Carter's chances for a second term, he failed to alter the new prominence of the Iowa caucuses.
The last one is the Not - there's no such place as "Ice Land".
So X-Files and Lucifer are going to be pre-empted by caucus coverage tonight. Canadians are so lucky...
I'm not sure Fox entertainment interrupts programming for such things. And the only thing Canadians are lucky aboot is that they get to share a continent with greatness.
We also had some pretty good weather today, while you guys get more snow.
And poutine and Tim's bits ...
Yes, so lucky. So very very lucky.
Fox's website is still claiming they're offering those shows in their regular time slot. I assume they'll run coverage on Fox News then switch over at 11 eastern.

As for the New Hampshire primary it seems its status has to do with several factors. Until 1878 New Hampshire had its elections in March and when it adopted November elections it still had municipal elections and town meetings in March. So when New Hampshire had its first presidential primary in 1916 it had it them March. Starting in 1920 it was first in the nation so no other state that had primaries felt like having them before early March. At the time the Primaries weren't very important and New Hampshire usually elected unpledged delegates. In order to increase turnout for 1952 New Hampshire expanded ballot access and at that Primary Estes Kefauver defeated Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower defeat Robert Taft. This gave the New Hampshire primary enormous prestige which it wants to keep.
I read about the history of the US presidential nomination process. Very interesting. Originally it was done by Congressional caucus. This was discredited by 1824. By 1828 most states replaced their state caucuses with state conventions so it was natural to have a National Convention in 1832. The progressives didn't like conventions so they advocated primaries. In the South this allowed Democrats to prohibit blacks from voting in their primaries and since the Republicans were so weak they could disenfranchise blacks since technically they weren't prohibited from voting in the general election.
The Presidential primaries really started in 1912 but state conventions and party bosses still had a lot of power and so the primaries were regarded by many as an expensive waste of time. Starting in 1952 the primaries gained more prominence. When Hubert Humphrey got nominated in 1968 despite not participating in any primary this was heavily criticized and George McGovern was able to get the Democrats to add more primaries for 1972. Oh and the first nomination to be decided mainly be primaries was won by him. And the Republicans did the same for 1972 as well.
Obama wants Congress to fund a $4 billion program to increase availability of computer science classes in public schools.
Why? Isn't everybody *already* playing games at school?

Fox & Friends: Morning Show Guest Says Black Voters Maintain 'Slavish Support' for Democratic Party
lol. Nice Troll.
Oh, that phrasing was poorly chosen.
There is no way a black right-winger used that phrasing on accident.
But it's really exaggerated...I mean, suggesting some kind of association between the Democratic Party and slavery? Really?
/sarc
She's doing some epic trolling, but also gets a pass on that phrase. Of course, I'm sure she'll be branded a race-traitor, oreo, or somesuch.
Aunt Tom?
I spose if she wanted to up her game she could have said, "Blacks have been niggardly with their support for the Republican party for over 50 years,"
Discussions with Intelligence Community officials have revealed that Ms. Clinton's "unclassified" emails included Holy Grail items of American espionage such as the true names of Central Intelligence Agency intelligence officers serving overseas under cover. Worse, some of those exposed are serving under non-official cover. NOCs (see this for an explanation of their important role in espionage) are the pointy end of the CIA spear and they are always at risk of exposure ? which is what Ms. Clinton's emails have done.
Not only have these spies had their lives put in serious risk by this, it's a clear violation of Federal law. The Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982, enacted due to the murder of the CIA's station chief in Athens after his cover was blown by the left-wing media, makes it a Federal crime to divulge the true identity of any covert operative serving U.S. intelligence if that person has not previous been publicly acknowledged to be working for our spy agencies.
http://observer.com/2016/02/br.....s-at-risk/
Anyone else remeber the Joe Wilson case? You know when many of the same media hacks who are today shilling for Hillary thought the Bush Administration outing a soccer mom in Virginia as an employee of the CIA was "TREASON!!"?
such as the true names of Central Intelligence Agency intelligence officers serving overseas under cover.
"Ethan, the list is in the open."
Most things that are called Top Secret are over classified and pretty mundane. SAP, however is a different thing altogether. SAP is really no shit "holy cow that is cool" kind of stuff.
What Hillary did is a hundred times worse for national security than anything Edward Snowden did. Snowden never got anyone killed. You have to go to cases like Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanson to find someone who did more damage to this country's than Hillary apparently has. It is just appalling.
Snowden exposed methods. Clinton exposed sources. Big difference.
Huge difference. And even those methods were well known within the intelligence community, just not the public.
Exposing a CIA operative does not just endanger that operative. Since many CIA operatives pose as employees of ostensibly private and independent front companies or organizations every person that that operative has spoken to in a foreign country, no matter how innocently, is also in danger.
So while the operative might be safely back home all of their foreign contacts immediately become vulnerable to arrest and worse if the identity of the operative becomes known.
the entire Intelligence Community are in panic mode right now, trying to determine which of our intelligence officers and agents have been compromised by EmailGate. At a minimum, valuable covers have been blown, careers have been ruined, and lives have been put at serious risk. ? And what about those 30,000 emails that Ms. Clinton had deleted? "I'll spend the rest of my career trying to figure out what classified information was in those," stated an exasperated Pentagon counterintelligence official, "everybody is mad as hell right now."
She's going down.
I will believe it when I see it. But if she does not, the Intel community and FBI are going to make the Democrats pay dearly. They won't take it lying down.
the Intel community and FBI are going to make the Democrats pay dearly.
How? Surely you're not alluding to *polonium*?
If they look hard enough, the FBI can indict anyone they want or if not indict them ruin their political careers. If you were a Democrat in Congress, would you want the FBI to take a special interest in investigating Democrats? And as an added bonus know they can rely on the intel community for help?
Any way Servergate plays out, it'll get ugly.
It is horrible. That stupid lazy corrupt bitch has done so much harm to this country. Even if she does go down, and she has to, it will be a horrible political mess that causes her supporters to think she was railroaded. That is terrible for the country. But that bitch won't care.
What I find baffling is why?!? The honest graft that comes with being a senator and wife of a retired president is non-controversial and quite substantial. There are stories that becoming president has been her ambition from day 1.
So why risk it all? All she needed to do was keep her nose clean, serve on a few boards, make the right public noises and she would be a lock to win the presidency. All it would take is the sort of self discipline normal people have in spades.
With so little to gain, and so much to lose, why did she do these stupid things?
I think her averice became its own end. Its like Bernie Madoff. The guy was rich to begin with. If he wanted to steal a little bit on the side, he could have done it and gotten away with it. But since nothing is more addictive than power and free money, it got out of control.
Hillary is the same way. Stealing and corruption is what she always has done. It didn't matter that she had more money than her and bill could ever spend. There is never enough.
She clearly is feeling some compulsion to do these reckless things. One possibility is that she gets off on breaking rules, or humiliating people, or taking advantage of them.
The other possibility is that she is like Phineas Gage after his accident, and her brain lacks the operational capability to restrain her impulses.
It is the former. She gets off on breaking the rules and humiliating people. I watched a documentary a while back on Denny McClain, the old Detroit Tigers' pitcher. McClain ended up going to prison twice for major fraud schemes after he stopped playing. In the film, his brother said that if you offered to give McClain the choice of getting a hundred dollars fairly or fifty dollars by taking advantage of someone, McClain would take the fifty every time.
I think that is the kind of personality Hillary has.
I think that is the kind of personality Hillary has
Hard to say this isn't the case, just based on her public history. It's a damn shame because she did display a bright legal mind in her youth. It's pretty pathetic that she, Sanders and Warren are the best the boomer liberals have to offer the country now.
Sorry, Bernie is 74, which places him outside the boomer generation.
normal people have in spades
Narcissistic, power-hungry sociopaths are not normal?
That is right bobarian. If she had any self control or self respect, she wouldn't have been stealing in the first place.
Good question, tarran. Perhaps it's the O.J. Simpson syndrome, i.e. surrounded by sycophants and people who never say "no" to you, you start to think you're invincible.
I always figured the private server was used as an attempt to shield Hillary from FOIA requests. At least thats my working theory.
Yes. FOIA requests that would reveal her pay for play and bribe solicitation.
This whole time I've been dubious. But if that stuff is true, it's hard not to see her going down for it. The Clinton's, for as much influence as they have, are people. They are transient. The Intelligence and Defense communities? For better or worse, they are institutions. They are permanent, and if they want to take her down, they can and will.
The CIA isn't as warm and fuzzy about these things as the FBI, I suspect. If she does end up in jail, she should probably consider herself lucky.
I'm not too sure how the CIA feels about figuratively biting the hand that feeds but I doubt they would task an Ops agent to deal with the hilldog. I expect they would find a way to leave the door open for a foreign operative to handle the task.
Remember that whole big set piece in the first Mission Impossible movie where Tom Cruise is hacking a computer while dangling from a ceiling? That was all about the NOC list - and the list had to be procured that way because it is so important that it can't be placed anywhere near an actual network connection. Glad to see Hillary! has done her part to ensure such scene can never be filmed again.

Dating app founder fights back: We aren't elitist
The League is billed as an intelligent alternative to Tinder -- for those who are busy, ambitious, and super picky. But don't call it elitist.
Founder and CEO Amanda Bradford publicly blasted one undergraduate student for doing so.
A senior at Stanford saw an internship for the company on Facebook and commented that she was "ashamed" to see the company come out of Stanford. (Bradford got her MBA there.)
"Do you realize there are millions of people out there who are kinder, nicer, harder working, more devoted, passionate, and interesting people than those who you believe are 'qualified' for your service," the student wrote. "Is it possible to get more elitist than this?"
In a 1,124-word response, Bradford shot back that her app is 100% merit-based: Anyone can apply and join the app regardless of income, profession, background or education.
100% merit-based
I will take him at his word that the service is that. The problem is I don't think he understands what the term "elitist" actually means.
"According to Bradford, the "common thread in the League community ... is the desire to be successful and having the ambition and work ethic to make an impact somewhere.""
Ambition and work ethic are so elitist. We should all be lazy bums.
I'm doing my part. Fight the power!
"She has a nice merit."
There are people who drink coffee and then there are people who serve coffee.
One does not simply *become* elite......
"Do you realize there are millions of people out there who are kinder, nicer, harder working, more devoted, passionate, and interesting people than those who you believe are 'qualified' for your service."
And maybe those aren't the qualities some people are looking for.
Yep. That was clearly written by an ugly person. You don't learn to think like that unless you're ugly.
I don't know who this woman is, but if it was a man complaining about Tinder, he'd be waved away as a "nice guy."

Yeah, if only the US had done something to address slavery...
remember the UN group of experts that assessed Women's Issues in the US?
one of the critics of America's shameful lack of abortion-access was from Poland... where abortion is effectively illegal.
Next they'll have the Arab countries apologize to all the surviving African descendants of the Arab slave trade....oh right, they castrated them and culled their rape babies. But those damn white people!

The blast of H&R posts this afternoon has left me stunned. There's like a half dozen things i haven't even read yet. It feels like they're back from vacation or something. Maybe because there have been past-days where they'd go hours without *anything*? Is it me, or was today unusual?
Normally they go hours without anything but then make up for it with 7 posts in 20 minutes
It's like the London buses. You wait all day then three come at once.
Yeah, it was only a little worse than normal, I think. They like to post nothing for hours and then dump everything at once. "Scheduling posts is hard" --libertarian Barbie
I understand if Rico or Doherty or ENB just post whenever they have something ready, but Matt and Nick published long, substantive posts within minutes of each other. It is... disheartening.
Several years ago, a commenter suggested Reason should hold back some of the blog posts that come out one after the other and post them on the weekend.
Clearly, the only solution is to distribute the staff in tiny underground bunkers across various time zones.
No need to do so for the squirrels, they're indestructible.
Or, send ENB back to Vegas.
There's been a noticeable lack of porn posts in the last few days.
Seconded.
Clearly, the only solution is to distribute the staff in tiny underground bunkers across various time zones.
I envision squirrel-sized bunkers...

Bill Nye: Science Educator Suggests Converting NASCAR Race Cars to Electric Motors
We should also run the Kentucky Derby with ostriches.
I'd be, um, down with that.
Electric motors, with metal strips in the track and a slot to keep the cars on the strips?
Or solar powered electric cars, where the Daytona 500 takes a week to run?
Because pit stops every 3 laps to swap batteries sounds like lots of fun.
Instead of refuelling a gas tank, the electric racecar pit crew would change battery packs. The car would be designed to roll up a ramp. The battery pack would be disconnected and dropped out. Moments later, a fresh battery pack would be lifted into place, and off our electric racer would go with time in the pit comparable to what it takes to refuel and service a conventional gas-powered racecar.
I do not watch NASCAR, but ramp crashes sound kinda cool.
show the public exactly what electrons can do
"This guy doesn't seem to know a whole lot about science."
- Chemical Reactions
If he thinks there is an electric car out there than can run a 500 mile race at speeds approaching 200 miles per hour on a single charge, he doesn't know much about "science" for being a science guy.
This is even worse for the times that I point out that Nye is an engineer and was never a scientist. He's a fucking mechanical engineer, if anyone should know why they don't use electric cars in NASCAR it's Bill Nye.
I think him and michael moore are sort of the same. Their time has passed and that bothers them...thus they need to keep saying chit for attention
The race would be what.... 20 minutes long?
the problem with electric races is that power declines quickly, torque starts to diminish in the bottom of the charge... and then you can't "recharge" your vehicle in the pits. the idea he floats of battery-swaps was already considered and determined to be either too-dangerous/expensive/impractical. main reason being that batteries need to be located very-low in the center of the vehicle to be practical, and you'd probably have to lift the car to make changes. If it were that easy to remove, it would be that easy to break.
its basically idiotic. what these guys really want is something to point fingers at and go, "NASCAR = IMMORAL!! We have the solution but we are stymied by armies of ignorant climate-science denying yokels!!"
Basically. They'd fly a jetliner into a skyscraper if they could tie it back to climate change.
I'm not up on all the latest regarding Li batteries, but...is that really the kind of thing you want to sling around a track at 200 mph with a high probability of collision?
Fuck no. That's whats "Exploding" in the hoverboards when they get compromised.
I just fly 3 foot R/C planes and LiPo batteries blow up real good at 20 mph, imagine a flying bomb going through the fence at 200, ouch
Crashes = viewers. Explosive crashes = more viewers.
So yes.
there was a documentary i saw about formula 1 technology on youtube... .. where a guy who did lots of work on F1 cars was separately developing an 'electric car series'... and he talked about a lot of the technical problems with merging traditional combustion-engine racing concepts with the demands that electric cars have.
this isn't it, but here's a brief on Formula E as it stands today
If you watched the video, you will see that the way they've gotten around the range/power limitations of these vehicles is to run TWO CARS... where halfway through, the driver actually switches vehicles.
Even then, the range is still shorter than any single car combustion-engine series. they are designing the courses around the car limitations by trying to pitch them as "intra-city road races", where the circuit is a arbitrary course laid out within an urban locale
the courses are narrow and don't have any long stretches where top-speed would matter. its all 'zip-zip-zip' corner to corner, torque racing.
that, plus the lack of any 'sound' seems to me to really limit its real sex-appeal as a racing style.
Like turning the competition into the DAYTONA 127.5 IF LUCKY instead of the DAYTONA 500
Those would be some LOOOOOOONG pit stops.
Speaking of the Super Bowl, is anyone else disappointed that the NFL is going with "50" this year instead of "L"?
A little. But I hear they are going back to Roman Numerals next year.
Nice! I look forward to Superbowl:Lithium.
I'm a little disappointed that I can't switch on the local news without being bombarded with several minutes of scrolling photos of babies and dogs wearing Denver Broncos attire.

Anybody else been keeping with the Zika virus?
I've been thinking that what we should do is bring all the mosquitoes here to the U.S. for treatment.
We have the medical infrastructure here to treat the Zika carrying mosquitoes, something they lack in Brazil, and the Center for Disease Control can vouch for the safety of treating the mosquitoes, once they're in containment here in the U.S., I'm sure.
And, honestly, anybody that doesn't believe what the CDC says is an ignorant redneck. The people who run the CDC have PhDs and everything.
That is right Ken. I mean it would be immoral and just make things worse to try and keep those poor mosquitoes out of the country.
If you even *think* about importing a single mosquito, I'll personally hunt you down and kill you. I hate mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are the spawn of Satan, if not Satan's mother! And this mild winter here on the Gulf Coast means we'll have even more of the hell spawn come summer! NO MORE MOSQUITOES!!!!

Suffering also flavors the meat of the chicken itself.
So, there was a good old-fashioned biker brawl/gunfight in Denver this past weekend:
http://kdvr.com/2016/01/30/wit.....ycle-expo/
One dead, seven wounded.
Quote: "Multiple witnesses said one of the clubs is known to have many law enforcement officers as members."
Details are starting to trickle out in the local media. A local radio piece on the fight said a Department of Corrections employee may have pulled his gun in the fight. I'm wondering if this is going to become suspicious, like the biker melee in Waco last summer.
There is still a whole lot of stuff to learn about the Waco fracas.
And I thought people were being funny when they said cops were just gang members with badges.
Yeah, there's nothing funny about it

Not to mention how much of the energy of the source is lost to convert to electricity and to transmit and to convert back into mechanical energy. Electricity is rather inefficient, but it is convenient.
Electricity is pretty efficient. Conversion from other form to electricity? Not so much.
