Altar Boy at Center of Catholic Church Rape Scandal Has as Much Credibility as UVA's Jackie
And much in common. Paging Sabrina Rubin Erdely.

Daniel Gallagher, now 27 years old, claimed he was raped by two Philadelphia priests and one of his teachers while serving as an altar boy at age 10. His lurid testimony—he described being passed from one monster to the next, forced to engage in oral and anal sodomy—put all three men behind bars some years ago.
What happened to Gallagher was unconscionable. If it happened at all, that is.
Unfortunately, a thorough review of Gallagher's past statements about his mistreatment paints a shockingly clear portrait of a serial liar who went after the archdiocese to cover up his own criminal drug dealings. Not only did Gallagher repeatedly alter key details regarding his alleged abuse, his statements are actually contradicted—over and over again—by actual facts uncovered during the investigation.
That's according to a compelling piece in Newsweek that finds fault with basically all aspects of Gallagher's story and the court's handling of the criminal cases. Dr. Stephen Mechanick, a forensic psychiatrist, evaluated Gallagher and found reason to doubt virtually everything he had ever said about being abused:
After a painstaking review of the subject's medical records gathered from 28 different drug rehab facilities, hospitals, doctors and drug counselors Gallagher visited, the psychiatrist wrote that Gallagher admitted he was "not always honest with his medical providers."…
All that might be dismissed as trivial, but Gallagher had also provided "conflicting and unreliable information" about his history of sexual abuse, as well as "conflicting and unreliable information" about the specifics of the alleged attacks by the two priests and schoolteacher, Mechanick wrote. "It is not possible to conclude to a reasonable degree of psychiatric or psychological certainty that Mr. Gallagher was sexually abused as a child," Mechanick added.
The psychiatrist isn't the only person deeply skeptical of [Gallagher] and his stories. The detective who led the Philadelphia district attorney's investigation into Gallagher's allegations against the priests and teacher also has some disturbing doubts. In a confidential deposition obtained by Newsweek, retired Detective Joseph Walsh was asked on January 29, 2015, about nine significant factual discrepancies in Gallagher's story. The detective testified that when he questioned Gallagher about those discrepancies, Gallagher usually just sat there and said nothing. Or claimed he was high on drugs at the time. Or told a different story.
To be clear: Gallagher changed significant details over time—well beyond what could be written off as mere misremembering. (For a full review, read the Newsweek story.) Some of the things he claimed are demonstrably false: For instance, Gallagher said he was raped after an early morning Mass, but his mother "kept meticulous calendars" that tracked his monthly altar boy assignments, and he never served at an early morning Mass during the fifth grade.
Gallagher successfully sued the Philadelphia archdiocese for $5 million dollars. He also repeatedly dodged criminal drug charges—in one case the district attorney bailed him out of jail so that he could testify against his alleged rapists, according to Newsweek.
There's one other noteworthy wrinkle in the Gallagher case. In September of 2011, a magazine ran what can only be described as an entirely one-sided account of the allegations against the priests, teacher, and archdiocese. This story presumed everything that Gallagher had said was true. It did not attempt any independent verification of his claims—indeed, it treated the accusations as if they were already proven facts.
The magazine that ran that story was Rolling Stone. The author of the piece was a woman named Sabrina Rubin Erdely. Jackie was not her first, it seems.

Shut up, Soave! Do you have a Master's from Columbia?!
He has me.
You are my new favorite commenter, and i look forward to following your work in the days and weeks to come.
You will comb the archives, I presume?
Are we talking to the drapes or the carpet? And are they the same color?
And you are FABULOUS!
We have a mirror, so I am well-aware of how fabulous I am.
When do we get to see you and Milo Yiannopoulos's hair duke it out, celebrity death match style?
I'd say you have a mirror. Robby is merely a glorified conveyance.
"It started off as a pimple on my ass." - Robby's Hair
He should be working down at the garage.
With that other science guy.
Chances of anybody in the media caring about this? Zero.
Has anyone actually watched Irreversible to make sure that scene is actually in it?
No one watched Irreversible, Hugh. It's too violent.
I saw it. There's a huge twist at the end where you find out who the superhero is. It was better than Signs.
Spoiler: Han dies.
I hated that scene. Wish they hadn't blown up his car. Though at least it served the franchise by giving the storyline excuse to reintroduce Vin Diesel's character.
Eh, that part was sort of contrived. Out of all the caves on all the ice planets in the galaxy, he just happened to be hanging out in the very one that young Captain Kirk was about to randomly stash the DeLorean in?
Ok, but the part near the end where he finds out his "girlfriend" was actually a dude and he runs in the bathroom to vomit. I bet you didn't see that one coming.
At least the big dance routine was enough to save the community center. You don't see enough movies with happy endings like that anymore.
Nobody puts Baby in a corner!
That right there is GOLD.
Ooh, baby. That is one sweet money shot.
Did not see that coming at all, but it was so perfect.
Time to go through Sabrina Rubin Orderly's writing history and check every story?
Who autocorrect thinks is Orderly.
Excellent. EXCELLENT.
Her career is over, right?
I just want to know if the NYTs are going to run this story?
Only if it's about nail salons.
Of course not, she will probably win an award.

A friend of mine lives very near Erdeley. She's been keeping a low profile. And it is about to get lower.

Career over? I thought she hadn't even lost her job.
This Sabrina has a real interest in lurid sexual fiction. Makes you wonder . . . .
Violent and lurid sexual fiction.
Fifty Shades of Fraud
Only fitty?
I thought it would be a TV series Sabrina, Middle-aged Bitch
There's still a talking cat, right?
Probably dozens of them.
Yes, but this one complains about the amount of peanut butter in its diet.
A talking pussy? Does The Road Warrior count?
#hackliesmatter
I'd say she should have a bright future as a flack in the Clinton Administration.
(Look at how well Susan Rice has done.)
Or head of the DNC. Debbie Wasserman Schultz will step down at some point. Though, Sabrina Rubin Erdely will have to up her game to feel that woman's shoes.
This is why we need to do away with due process in rape and sexual assault cases, to make sure people like these men are punished based only on accusations.
Well, that's already been the case for decades now. No corroborating evidence is needed for convictions. The word of the accuser, alone, is all that is necessary to convict. This is what is considered to be 'due process' in American jurisprudence today.
I said this at the time the UVa story blew up, based on things I'd read online: all of Erdely's big stories seem "too good to be true." Here's a Storify in which someone who seems to know what they are talking about demolishes her military rape story. They claim the details and timeline are not at all how the military operates. Other people have questioned her "Gangster Princess of Beverly Hills" story.
Robby, I'm a bit surprised you're only noticing this now, considering all the (great) work you did on the UVa story. Erdely may well be a Stephen Glass-level fraud. (Ironically, they were buds in college.)
It's not the first time I'm noticing it, but this new Newsweek story just seemed like a particular good opportunity to take note. Ashe Schow has covered Erdely's various failings in some detail. http://www.washingtonexaminer......le/2562711
I remember this being brought up at the time with UVA. Hopefully some of the people railroaded by her stories will see some reparations for the harm done to them.
Something should happen to this horrible person. Anyone who continues to do this knowing that they ruined people's lives writing stories with little or no collaborating evidence, I would think is a sure sign of some serious sociopath like disorder.
corroborating
Damn you to hell.
The Catholic Church could sue her for all the lost contributions.
Her story encouraged Papistphobia. That's a fucking hate crime, right there.
Say what you want, but Hammurabi's Law was just, and under it these people would have seen justice.
Papaya, why do you hate "advocacy journalism?" In the 21st century, simply reporting the facts only serves to keep the white, male cis-hetero shitlord oppressors in power. Journalists have a greater good to be mindful of you heartless bastard. Have fun at your klan rally.

Oh man, i happened to have a free year's subscription to Rolling Stone at the time that "Gangster Princess of Beverly Hills" story came out, and i read it, and it was dumb and pointless as fuck. Side note: a free subscription to Rolling Stone is still just barely worth it.
Don't forget opportunity costs. The time you spent reading Rolling Stone could have been spent doing something useful and more entertaining, like getting a colonoscopy.
or performing one!
"Erdely may well be a Stephen Glass-level fraud. (Ironically, they were buds in college.)"
Isn't two peas in a pod the opposite of irony? Wouldn't irony be if she had previously called out Glass's fraud, or something like that?
Sorry to be the irony police. Won't even bring up Alanis Morissette.
You're right, I should have said "amusingly" or "coincidentally," Officer.
I don't think "coincidentally" is right either. More along the lines of "not all surprisingly" is probably nearer the mark.
Alanis Morissette?
She was in on it too? Nothing is sacred.
Wouldn't it be Ironic if she was.
That would be like if she and O'Henry had a baby and named it this exact situation.
let's all bow down to Nothing. It's sacred...great Gahan Wilson cartoon
Yeah, I do recall someone in the comments raising questions about the priest rape story at the time last year.
Will we see exonerations?
Speaking as a child of the 70's, I can't understand why anyone ever considered Rolling Stone a credible source of important information. If they did actual journalism they would never have to call it gonzo journalism.
Gonzo journalism can be real. It may be exaggerated and subjective, but it's not simply fiction.
So it's complex fiction? Fact-influenced fiction? Poetic fiction?
It sure the fuck ain't journalism if it's exaggerated and one-sided..
Based on a true story, just like almost all hollywood films these days.
Journalism is often, maybe usually exaggerated and one-sided. Even the best journalism is necessarily incomplete and subjective to some degree. Gonzo journalism accepts that, and drops a lot of formality, pseudo-objectivity, and pretense for the sake of entertainment. Did everything Hunter Thompson reported happen exactly the way he described it? Probably not. But were his stories basically true? I think so.
"Objective" journalism is basically a 20th century invention, and not even counting the inherent subjectivity, it's always been a bit loose around the edges: restaging events like the flag-raising on Guadalcanal, etc. But it's a matter of degrees. Hunter Thompson's writing's weren't perfectly objective and perfectly "true," but he wasn't just making shit up, or credulously reporting the accounts of liars as facts.
Investigative reporting by Rolling Stone on current events is every bit as reliable as a Hollywood docu-drama. For example, Primary Colors and Wag the Dog were excellent portrayals of the Clinton Administration and Team America and In the Loop were likewise of the Bush Administration. No good examples come to mind for Obama, though.
"Come to me you perfect victims. Come to Sabrina," she whispered. "Bring me your perfect stories. Bring me your pain."
Everything she's ever published should be fisked down to the subatomic level.

Look at this from the Newsweek article:
When Snyder and Sorensen interviewed Gallagher, then 21, his parents, including his Philadelphia police sergeant father, were allowed to sit in on the interview, although the regular policy in the Philadelphia Police Department, as well as the DA's office, called for interviewing an adult complainant by himself.
What would you expect?
There are many people who believe that the Catholic Church in some places, like Boston and Philly, has been, or was until only very recently, the most powerful institution - more so than the Boston Globe, or the law enforcement racket. All part of the messaging.
That's why the movie Spotlight was a flop, ab-initio. One of the premises undergirding the movie is that the Boston Globe, in general, and the reporters who comprised the Globe's Spotlight team, in particular, were David, fighting Goliath, the Archdiocese of Boston.
Baltimore is likely another place where the Catholic Church was once the dominant institution.
But now that it is not, are things any better?
Yes, now your local church also serves as check cashing and lotto ticket service. Carry out is in back on the left and crack house on the right.
And fried chicken
Police Sergeant father.
This story gets better and better.
What do you want to bet that the Apple didn't fall too far from the tree?
The final couple of paragraphs are pretty interesting too. This guy apparently had his intent to distribute case dismissed and was sent into a diversion program he otherwise wasn't eligible for on a separate charge.
Could be good lawyering but methinks this smells more like the DA wanted to keep this kid happy and silent.
One can only conclude that the epidemic of rape culture being experienced on our campuses of higher learning must in fact be a catholic conspiracy ordered by the pope himself. I for one will not allow my children to attend Notre Dame as it is likely the epicenter of it all.
There's more:
In Philadelphia, the Billy Doe case remains front-page news three years after the original trial that convicted Lynn. On December 22, the Pennsylvania state Superior Court for the second time overturned Lynn's conviction and ordered a new trial. A three-judge panel ruled that the trial judge in the case, M. Teresa Sarmina, abused her discretion when she admitted into evidence against the monsignor 21 supplemental cases of sex abuse dating back to 1948, three years before the 64-year-old Lynn was born.
Bill Cosby gets his records unsealed because he's uppity a "public moralist" and this guy gets unrelated evidence thrown against him because he's a Satanist Catholic.
... tell me again what century it is we are living in?

Altar Boy at Center of Catholic Church Rape Scandal Has as Much Credibility as UVA's Jackie
So there's a trip to the White House in his future?
Also from the Newsweek article, Philly DA rewrites grand jury testimony:
Sheila Gallagher told that same story to a Philadelphia grand jury on November 12, 2010:
Q: Did there come a time when you noticed a change in Daniel's behavior?
A: Yes. At age 14, as he entered high school, freshman year at high school, he wasn't the same child. He was very troubling to us.
Q: OK. Prior to that, what was his personality?
A: He was basically a very pleasant, active, happy person prior to that, and he was defined by some people as either Dennis the Menace or the all-American boy up to that point.
Q: OK. So he's leaving St. Jerome's and entering into high school?
A: Uh-huh.
Q: And at this time what's going on that's different?
A: Freshman year started in September, and in February we were called and he was thrown out of Archbishop Ryan for having some marijuana and having brass knuckles.
The Philadelphia district attorney's office made that factual contradiction go away by rewriting the mother's grand jury testimony. The DA's 2011 grand jury report stated, "Billy's mother also told us of a dramatic change in her son's personality that coincided with the abuse?. Billy's mother watched as her friendly, happy sociable son turned into a lonely, sullen boy. He no longer played sports or socialized with his friends. He separated himself and began to smoke marijuana at age 11."
Billy's mother watched as her friendly, happy sociable son turned into a lonely, sullen boy.
So... he became a teenager?
So... he became a teenager?
My thought, too.
In progressivism, nobody and no thing is actually supposed to progress.
Correct. My 15-year-old son started this last year. My 12-year-old daughter started her "crappy teenager attitude" last year too. You know what they say, girls mature earlier than boys.
We don't go to church and aren't around any priests, so that's not the cause. I think it's called what you said, teenager-dom.
just wait till they hit the real idiot years, 17-20.
then it tops out around 21-22, bars for days.
My 15-year-old son started this last year.
Late bloomer?
The Catholic Church favors Prohibition.
So - Rough Justice or to mix religions - Karmic Justice
Is Rough Justice anything like Rough Sex?
Depends on the prison you get assigned to.
The Catholic Church favors Prohibition.
Citation needed. The church was against the 18th Amendment.
Methinks the church is being coerced into accepting Prohibition nowadays.
Try looking up "the Pope on Drug Prohibition".
Backs up my point on the coercion.
Backs up my point on the coercion.
And the nut punch at the end:
Meanwhile, four men were sent to jail because of Gallagher's accusations, and one of those men died in prison. At Engelhardt's funeral, the Reverend James Greenfield, the provincial who leads the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, revealed that on the eve of his criminal trial, Engelhardt could have negotiated a deal that would gotten him off with just community service. Instead, he got sentenced to six to 12 years in prison "because he would not perjure himself by pleading guilty to 'make a deal,' to admit to a crime that he did not commit."
(cont)
Talk to the eight defense lawyers in the criminal cases and they'll all tell you Daniel Gallagher is a chronic liar, a junkie hustler and a confabulator. They can't believe how lucky he's been. After the DA got Gallagher out of jail so he could tell his stories of sexual abuse, he was arrested twice on charges of drug possession, including one bust for possession with intent to distribute 56 bags of heroin. But, thanks to his criminal lawyer, that heroin was thrown out of court as evidence. A subsequent drug bust, on charges of possession of a controlled substance, also disappeared after nine continuances in 18 months, when the DA let Gallagher into an accelerated rehab program for which he ordinarily would not have been eligible.
Today, Daniel Gallagher is a free man with a clean record living in Florida with his new wife, who's expecting the couple's first child. And, thanks to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, he's also a multimillionaire.
Being a drug user doesn't instantly make someone a pathological liar.
The bigger problem is the DA (and possible the judge) is a pathological liar and a manipulator.
The author, earlier in the article, documents Gallagher's lies.
You just pulled a Balko. Ugh.
I understand, but your quoted passage is the author trying to make people believe that drug user = liar and I refuse to buy that propaganda. Gallagher is a liar AND a drug user, but the two have little to do with each other.
Yeah, that is a shitty bit of writing.
Throw in "AND a drug dealer," though, and these things have a little more to do with each other.... I suppose it's possible that a junkie-dealer-hustler might not be a liar too, but that's not the way to bet.
I suppose it's possible that a junkie-dealer-hustler might not be a liar too, but that's not the way to bet.
If I were a betting man, I'd trust junkies and dealers before I'd trust cops or politicians. Without the WoD there is little incentive for drug users and drug sellers to lie. Shit, the WoD even encourages cops to lie more than usual.
Let us all pray for justice in the world, and a bouncing baby boy who does unto daddy as daddy has done unto others.
Rico was ON today, boy - I sent in the link for this earlier today, but he was obviously already on the case.
I found this 2013 statement from the Survivors' Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP), concerning two of the defendants who was convicted on Daniel Gallagher's testimony - Fr. Charles Engelhardt and Bernard Spero.
Another priest came to the defense of the defendants and SNAP was duly angry:
"Fr. [James J.] Greenfield is the new president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men [and a "colleague" of Fr. Engelhardt], purportedly representing some 17,000 religious order clerics in the US....
"We strongly doubt that Fr. Greenfield spent hours with Fr. Engelhardt's victim, as police and prosecutors surely did, or spent weeks and weeks listening to testimony from all sides, as jurors did....
""In my opinion, there is something not right inside the D.A's office," Fr. Greenfield told a blogger.
"There are thousands of religious order priests in the US who don't claim there's a "war" against Catholic priests and who don't claim that they're right and that police, prosecutors, jurors, a victim and a judge are all wrong. We wish one of them had been elected to head the CMSM. We hope America's religious order priests had made a more judicious choice and that they don't end up regretting their decision to boost the career of such an extremist as Fr. Greenfield."
And according to the Newsweek article, "[Fr.] Engelhardt died in prison in November 2014, hours after the 67-year-old priest was handcuffed to a hospital bed, kept under armed guard and denied a potentially lifesaving heart operation."
Oh, and Gallagher's dad was a "police sergeant."
OT
DWS has a primary opponent. Greenwald's promoting him. Sounds a lot like Bernie.
He has worked with former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson against the drug war and private prisons
My mom and dad both live in her district. Don't think I can get either of them to vote against her, though. Will at least donate to this guy.
Argue from the left. That is, argue that the challenger better represents liberal ideals: end Republican crony capitalism, cutting back on the oppressive Republican national security state, ending the racist Republican war on drugs, etc. The fact that these are just as much Democrat as Republican programs need not enter into the discussion.
She becomes more attractive by the day.
As a former altar boy, I can tell you that my anecdotal evidence suggests these events are rare in the Church. I was never abused and I was quite the looker in my cassock and surplice.
Nobody respects you enough to tell you the truth.
Umm, we need pics to judge for ourselves...
Just because the priests didn't diddle me doesn't mean I want you people abusing yourselves to images of pubescent me on my knees, hands together, looking up innocent and cherub-like (but not chubby, let's get that straight right now).
That's two, does she get another strike or has she ruined enough lives yet?
This one would already be Erdely's third strike.
People have noted problems with the 'Altar boy' story for over 2 years. And there's not a hell of a lot of confidence in her "Military As Giant Rape-Factory" story from a few years ago either.
2011-2014 was really a gold-rush of 'rape culture' narratives. It was the style at the time, you see.
"In many ways, what happened to Petty Officer Second Class Rebecca Blumer after she was roofied and raped by three Army officers she met in a bar not far from base was far worse than the attack itself. Her superiors became more intent on prosecuting her for D.U.I. than on finding out what really happened to this promising young intelligence analyst. What's worse is that her brutal story, recounted in riveting detail by journalist Sabrina Rubin Erdely in this month's Rolling Stone magazine, is far from uncommon. The military, as films like The Invisible War and Erdely's article show, has a rape problem of epidemic proportions... '
That 'epidemic' of course is based on a single-study with a dubious self-selected sample of VA-patients.
I think it would be easier if we list the stories she reported accurately.
Yeah, it's way easier to count to zero.
FACTS!!! YOU GUYS WANT FACTS!!! Sabrina Rubin Erdely is reporting the TRUTH!!!!! And you racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic bigoted little minds can't handle the TRUTH!!!!!
as Phyllis replied I am in shock that any body able to make $4140 in a few weeks on the internet . try this website..........

Erdely's husband Peter Erdely was a Philadelphia ADA at the time she wrote the story. She did not disclose the potential conflict of interest.
Q: if she were ever raped, would anyone believe her?
The magazine that ran that story was Rolling Stone. The author of the piece was a woman named Sabrina Rubin Erdely.
It's worse than that. Ederly's husband was an ADA with the office prosecuting the case. They were tag teaming the accused.
You know....
I do recall something about Erdely saying that she had worked with Stephen Glass and had learned something from the experience ...
I think that was one of her critics, but I'm tired of looking up links today.
She was just warming up.

As far as the accusations against the individual go, this is of course an outrage.
As far as the accusations against the Catholic church go, this makes no difference: there are so many proven cases of child abuse (both sexual and non-sexual) within the Catholic church that there clearly is a problem.

conclude to a reasonable degree of psychiatric or psychological certainty
I'm not criticizing the guy's conclusions, but can one of the local scientificists scienceists Sciencians or whatever the members of The Church of Sciencianity call themselves explain this statement to me? Does each branch or field get it's own distinct certainty or version of truthiness or is it one reasonable truth or certainty with different iterations or interpretations?
The social 'sciences' have incredibly low standards, often reaching arbitrary conclusions about matters that are totally subjective. Instead of not taking them seriously because of this, these 'scientists' want you to lower your own standards so that the social sciences can meet them. Oftentimes the excuse will be that we currently don't have any better alternatives, but that still does not change the quality of the science. Lowering your standards of what constitutes good science is not a good idea if you care about truth, which social scientists don't.
