No one can dispute that the United States has a shameful and persistent history of racism specifically aimed at black Americans, the only group that was held as slaves. Other groups also faced indefensible foms of de jure discrimination and there's a strong case to be made that offical policy toward Native Americans was nothing short of genocidal.
The question, then, isn't whether America was racist but to what extent is America still formally and informally excluding people from full participation based not on the "content of their character" but "the color of their skin," to use phrases made famous by MLK. Put more finely, are widely varying outcomes—ranging from levels of income and wealth to the likelihood of being arrested, jailed, or on probation—due to racism or other factors? Nobody can dispute that today's America is vastly different from, say, 40 or 50 years ago, and is much more pluralistic and non-discriminatory. Explicit racism has effectively disappeared from public discourse, which is arguably a greater advance than twice electing an African American president.
Film director Spike Lee, reports The Toronto Star, is boycotting this year's Academy Awards because he says the Oscars is persistently racist:
Honorary Academy Award winner Spike Lee will boycott this year's Oscars in protest at another year where actors and actresses of colour received zero nominations.
"40 white actors in two years and no flava' at all. We can't act? WTF?"…
[Lee] pointed the blame at the executive offices of Hollywood studios, T.V. and cable networks, the "gate-keepers," who make casting decisions.
"The truth is we ain't in those rooms, and, until minorities are, the Oscar nominees will remain lily-white," he added.
Lee said it was no coincidence he posted the message on the 30th anniversary of Martin Luther King's birthday, and referred to a famous quotation from the Civil Rights leader: "There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right."
Over at the YouTube channel for Prager U, a site named for writer and radio host Dennis Prager and promising "free courses for free minds," Larry Elder asks "Is racism still a major problem in America?" and concludes, "Not so fast."
What do you think, readers? Is Lee right and Elder wrong, or the reverse? Neither right? Both?

Political Correctness is a brainwashing technique based
on Marxist Critical Theory
It is a system of cyclical logic that once adopted by the user never
allows for another approach, and the end-game is that the assigned
antagonist always embodies hatred, racism, or oppression.
They become intellectually trapped because in order to see and realize
when they err, they would have to empathize and entertain their assigned
antagonists point of view...this causes great cognitive dissonance due
to contradicting their previously assigned value of the antagonist and
so is rejected or avoided.
The remaining cognitive dissonance is alleviated by the religious
cult-like belief that they are on the " right " or " good " side of
every issue, always battling racists, bigots, and oppressors, like
religious zealots.
And, just like religious zealots they always assume moral authority and
claim to have " more knowledge " than the average folk.
Religions have
made up transgressions against their gods, and PC has made up
transgressions against their ideal society
Notice the difference between MLK (whose public speeches and utterances have rightly achieved canon status in American public discourse) and Spike Lee, who honors said poet with a sentence including the "word", 'flava'...
Maybe, but a problem I see isn't racism, but contamination from the pervasive PC that Nick has had no choice but to swim through over the years, as a media professional, has led to the mistake of writing that going from overt discrimination over skin color and/or race is more closely approached ("put more finely") by broadly looking at any and all ways that one can list that Blacks statistically do worse than whites, if one looks at huge numbers, and then one classifies a worse outcome for Blacks as racism.
No, Nick, rather one can claim that this is racism. A statistic on large numbers, with no other supporting facts, is not at all proof of racism. Nick accepts this, I humbly suggest, because it's easier than pointing out what I just did. Especially when many PC libs ignore your point and just repeat the claim. So bad on you, Nick, for sliding on down the easy path. That used to be known as the sin of sloth, and Nicks progress down that road in the rest of the article supports considering sloth a sin.
Remember that time Tony was here progsplaining why MLK's individualist sentiment was misguided because he couldn't have accounted for the disparate impact of institutionalized racism today, and that's why affirmative action is justified?
Language is one of PC's essential tools, and attempting to carefully use them helps show their weird nonsensicality. You show this by saying that institutional racist today justifies affirmative action. I know you are making a joke, but this sort of slight mistake is part of what empowers them. The claim of institutional racism literally would be the Jim Crow laws, slave laws, South African race laws, etc. Identifiable institutional stuff.
The PC claim is that there must be an invisible type of this institutional racism at work, because otherwise the uncomfortable fact of disparately worse performance (only using statistics based on large numbers of people, mind - no credible source suggests any other indication of disparity) in school and in legal lifestyles would sit there on the table, with increasingly uncomfortable silence drawing out as time ticks by.
Thus the strident insistence one will always see, using the shorthanded phrase "institutional racism." The shorthand is preferred without the supporting verbiage about missing visible structures, which is inconveniently long. It has to be much longer than my version so as to not be so obviously a kooky idea. Yet without the stridency, you must eventually come to that very uncomfortable silence. Ouch.
I thought America in the time of MLK was all about institutionalized racism.
These days, most people think that sure, there are still some individual racists, but it's not institutional. What college would every want to discriminate against blacks? So now the proggies tell us that of course the racism is institutional, whites are inherently racist, don't even know, and can never rid themselves of it.
Of course, this is just to prevent themselves from becoming irrelevant.
This. Liberals love to point at "democratic socialist" countries as ideal states, but those places happen to be 95% white because they mostly outsourced their slavery to Africa and just left them there once they didn't need them anymore. It's easy to not be racist when 1% of your population is black and they share the same culture.
Except for the part where I've driven all over the South with first a Vietnamese and now a black GF and not once did I encounter any overt racism.
The closest I came to racist comments came in the Northeast, where a couple people talked about a particular part of town being "scary", but when I got there, it was just a lot blacker than the non-"scary" parts of town.
I'll back you on this. The south has dealt with racism in ways that other areas of the country have not. My ex-wife and I never encountered a single cross-eyed look from any white southerners. We lived in the shadow of Stone Mountain for years. We went line-dancing in Kennesaw - home of the mandatory gun ownership law - and even though she was sometimes the only African-American in the room, we were always well-received. Even the older gentlemen in the crowd who one might expect to harbor racist views were friendly and would ask her to dance.
We traveled throughout the south (and the rest of the nation) from the mid-eighties til the turn of the century, never encountering any animus. Well, with the possible except of the poor fellow from the Nation of Islam who tried to recruit her while we were at a stoplight in downtown Atlanta. Poor fellow had no idea what he stepped into. Lucky for him the light changed and I drove off before she really got going.
I've found this to be true also. In fact, I had to warn my Vietnamese and Ukrainian immigrant co-workers that what they were saying out loud could get them in deep trouble if the wrong person heard them.
Honestly, in my experience, white Americans are just about the least racist people you will ever encounter. Much shit as they get from progressives, if you want to find someone who has really negative opinions of black people, talk to an Asian or Indian immigrant who has had some unwanted experiences with residents of poor inner city communities.
It's kind of funny actually, because recent Asian immigrants usually don't understand just how taboo race as a subject is in the US; can't tell how many times an Asian or Indian co-worker or classmate has commented on something "black people did" to or in front of them in a negative light, and they seems puzzled that I just look at them blankly, failing to understand that I am not allowed to participate in that conversation.
Seriously, in every other nationality or demographic group withing the US, racial stereotypes (including negative ones) are par for the course; it's almost exclusively white people who are the ones who get uncomfortable about them (of course, plenty of other groups get upset about stereotypes of *their* group, but other than that, it's all fair game; I mean, far and away the most Islamaphobic and anti-Arab things I've ever heard were said by some black guys on the bus I rode home in high school; they make people like Donald Trump look subtle.)
Honorary Academy Award winner Spike Lee will boycott this year's Oscars in protest at another year where actors and actresses of colour received zero nominations.
This will teach the Hollywood Libertarian elite a lesson.
It seems like half the awards in any given year are for playing catch-up for previous years, not just for social justice reasons but..."oh, this guy has been in 500 movies, never won an award, and got amazing reviews for a role last year, the award for which we gave to Sean Penn for playing a handicapped terrorist with a heart of gold, so let's give it to him this year for the movie that's just ok. If someone else deserves it more we'll make it up next year"
"Do you know that Negroes are 10 percent of the population of St. Louis and are responsible for 58% of its crimes? We've got to face that. And we've got to do something about our moral standards. We know that there are many things wrong in the white world, but there are many things wrong in the black world, too. We can't keep on blaming the white man. There are things we must do for ourselves." MLK in 1961, decades before the War on Drugs and mass incarceration.
Natural blonde/redhead , features pretty symmetrical, not fat, good posture...this is not an unattractive woman, just a very unflattering photo of an unhappy person with no makeup on.
Just in case you are not kidding, that picture is of Charlize Theron when she played the role of a serial killer in the movie Monster. She won an Oscar for wearing makeup and gaining weight. And yes, that means I should have won a few Oscars in my mid-twenties.
She looked quite a bit like Aileen Wuornos. Got her eccentricities down pretty well, too. But Christina Ricci was too skinny to play Wuornos' girlfriend.
A few years back, there was a satirical site that did a 'lost DVD commentary' of the Lord of the Rings movies (actually just the Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King) by Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky. It is hilarious.
sample: CHOMSKY: The film opens with Galadriel speaking. "The world has changed," she tells us, "I can feel it in the water." She's actually stealing a line from the non-human Treebeard. He says this to Merry and Pippin in The Two Towers, the novel. Already we can see who is going to be privileged by this narrative and who is not.
Someone once asked me what that word meant. I told them it was a term to describe "Gang-rape", by combining 'Rape' with 'corporations'. I suppose it was true in a sense.
There is only one problem with this theory. Whatever reparations are paid won't be enough to fully stop racism, so more will always be needed. White people are too racist to ever fully own up and pay enough.
750,000 deaths (in the Civil War) is not enough? How many more would be? I think there is no upper limit. Reparations will be demanded by black "leaders" and activists pretty much forever. Of course, it's really about money.
KRAMER: May I have one of those, madam?
GEORGE: Madame? What are you calling me madam for?
KRAMER: They're ladies' glasses.
(Kramer takes George's glasses and shows him the inside)
KRAMER: Now look here, see it's right here: Gloria Vanderbilt Collection.
GEORGE: He sold me ladies' glasses!
Mazel Tof! I think a step in the right direction in the continuing struggle for racial equality is to completely dismantle the public school system and let the White and Asian children of Google employees attend schools together. I have a dream!
I think a step in the right direction in the continuing struggle for racial equality is to completely dismantle the public school system[...]
Ho hum.
I'm bored. Marxians are becoming more and more sad and pathetic shadows of their former selves. I feel the lazyness sooo much I can't even lift a finger to berate you for your inanities.
This always happens to super-villains OM. The nazis went from german supermen in snappy uniforms with state of the art weapons to gaggles of lunatic fringe wackos covered in bad tattoos. The soviets went from stone faced legions parading Red Square amidst tanks and missiles to wild eyed hysterical academics giving spittle flecked rants and snatching protest signs from 16 year old girls.
Marxists are pathetic because they are a stupid lot. Who would cling to a philosophy that has a 100 year record of 100% failure? Stupid people, that's who.
...let the White and Asian children of Google employees attend schools together.
Free association is what you joke about? You sarcastically joke that it would be racist for asians and whites to freely associate together? You're are not indicting asians and whites for racism, here. You are indicting yourself.
So does this mean Asians are now officially oppressors too in your book? It's almost as though, in your view, being successful were itself sufficient evidence of wrongdoing (or, wrongthinking).
Since we mentioned Lord of the Rings, consider white supremacism as the evil forces in Middle Earth, and Jim Crow as the One Ring.
After the destruction of the One Ring, there were still orcs, and Saruman and if you dug deep enough, the Balrog.
Likewise even after the overthrow of Jim Crow, there's still white racists doing their white racist thing.
But their powers are greatly reduced.
Now imagine that some idiot tried to gain power in Middle Earth by saying that Sauron was more powerful than ever - there you have your Spike Lees and other race baiters.
Not to pick at nits, but
Oh, who am I kidding. I love to nitpick!
The Balrog in Moria was slain by Gandalf the Grey before he "died" and was elevated to White, to replace Saruman. Which happened BEFORE the destruction of the One Ring.
And, while we are on the topic of racism, what about the Southrons? After all, they were SWARTHY MEN!
No one can dispute that the United States has a shameful and persistent history of racism specifically aimed at black Americans, the only group that was held as slaves.
I dispute the persistence, at least in regards to the institutional racism which is the only one conducive to empirical measurement, regular ole racism exists in every society towards just about any conceivable group. And more importantly I reckon that many Native Americans and historians would vehemently contest the notion that blacks were the only group ever held as slaves.
The funny thing about Marxism, it assumes that the State will dissolve itself in the end, once utopia is established. So what is the motive for the State to enact utopia?
Same as it is for religious fundamentalists that believe they can hasten the coming of the End Times - they want or believe a New World Order is on the horizon and also believe they stand to benefit substantially when that time comes.
I'm a fundamentalist and we are taught that now one knows the time, not even the Son. Nothing we can or should do to make it come faster or slower. We are to assume it could come any day, any second, and live our life accordingly to be prepared.
"A rational anarchist believes that such concepts as 'state' and 'society' and 'government' have no existence save as physically exemplified in the acts of self-responsible individuals. He believes that it is impossible to shift blame, share blame, distribute blame? as blame, guilt, responsibility are taking place inside human beings singly and nowhere else. "
~ Professor de la Paz
Because the nation (and its government) exists separate and apart from the population. It is a separate entity completely independent from the people who staff it or that it rules over. Ask any progressive.
"40 white actors in two years and no flava' at all. We can't act? WTF?"...
Right because white actors and of course white people in general are bland and flavorless. No variation there, no sir.
[Lee] pointed the blame at the executive offices of Hollywood studios, T.V. and cable networks, the "gate-keepers," who make casting decisions."The truth is we ain't in those rooms,
If I were hiring a studio exec, I'd definitely pick the guy with a questionable grasp of his native language.
and, until minorities are, the Oscar nominees will remain lily-white," he added
Perhaps if there were too many black nominees, I'd spout off some bullshit about how the nominees were all "darker than a brown paper bag". I wonder if I'd be at all criticized for adding using such adjectives to describe the color of the nominee's skin. I guess I probably wouldn't be as long as my targets were "lily-white".
Not all dialects are created equal. Consistency does not a correct grammar make, some people consistently make the same mistakes when speaking and will consistently pass those characteristics onto their children and I will consistently recognize their mistakes and, all else being equal, cast a mental judgement about that person. Good for them if they don't care what others think of their ability to communicate. The ones who do care but are fully inculcated with their parent's speech deficiencies, for them I have considerably more empathy.
It's only a deficiency if it hinders their ability to communicate. Being too "street"or too "hillbilly" can and sometimes does hinder people's ability to communicate. But someone like Spike Lee is perfectly capable of making himself understood to any American audience (to the extent that what he has to say makes any sense).
Hey, I can be as picky about grammar and word usage as anyone and often am. But the English language comes in lots of flavors, and not being some kind of "standard English" doesn't necessarily make it wrong.
And yes, poor grammar remains poor grammar whether or not you choose to care about it. My professors don't accept "ain't" on my term papers just because I'm from Oklahoma.
You know what ain't fair? "Y'all" is unaccepted grammar outside the South. But "y'all" is simply a contraction of "you all," just like "isn't" means "is not," "can't" means "cannot," etc.
"Y'all" is unaccepted grammar outside the South. But "y'all" is simply a contraction of "you all,"
It's actually very old grammar too. It was mostly lost in English, but preserved in the northern English dialects that went on to form the basis of Southern American English after colonization. Or so I read back when I had a subscription to the online Oxford Engrish Dictionary.

I am understand what you has say. I be glad we got have dis exchange. Right you is. Dar not no reason nobbody gun not hire me for job when fills out job application like dis. Dar is non good way n no bad way to be speakin dis words, no justify cost to man's social interacts with others as long as understanded I be. People dat english rules on insist to me, dey be dicks dat dont no nothing.
Grammar is just a catalog of the norms used. There's nothing particularly special about when it was recorded that makes it the true language for all time.
Right because white actors and of course white people in general are bland and flavorless. No variation there, no sir.
And looking at the 20 nominees this year, half of them are from outside of the US. And it seems like a lot of the nominees are from biopics about white folk or a novel about two white lesbians written in the 50s.
I think it's fair to complain that Coogler and Michael B. Jordan weren't nominated, despite Creed's success. Friggin Stallone got a nomination, but the Academy had to save room for Cranston hamming it up as a commie in a movie that had a middling response. And Matt Damon, for some reason. Lame.
Doesn't the non-landed gentry live among the landed gentry? I mean you're still gentry after all. If you're actually starving, you're gentrifying all wrong.
Yes, sir. I finished the season. I liked it. It was not great, and it dragged on at times, but overall I enjoyed it. The dude who plays the super Nazi guy is fantastic.
I watched the first 4 or 5 episodes. It's very good. Very high production values, good writing, excellent performances. Alexa Davalos is...gorgeous. It is, however, pretty bleak and moves quite slowly. I'm going to finish the season, but I need to be in a different frame of mind for it.
I enjoyed it. It wasn't the greatest thing ever made or anything, but it was well done and interesting. I'm kind of wondering what the second season becomes.
I didn't like that they took the Italian aspect out of it. Being a guineau bastard, I started wondering what that would have meant for me in their universe.
"The Sicilian is still, however, well known for his extreme jealousy in so far as his womenfolk are concerned, and in a crisis still resorts to the dagger."
Honorary Academy Award winner Spike Lee will boycott this year's Oscars in protest at another year where actors and actresses of colour received zero nominations.
Emphasis added. Is that like "Affirmative Action"?
""It's no secret that Bernie Sanders and Debbie Wasserman Schultz are not best friends.'"
Debbie donuts has basically been trying to run the DNC as Clinton's personal PR vehicle since about the time Obama was re-elected and there was no further value in putting effort behind defending him.
Bernie's job was to provide issues for Hillary to co-opt. He wasn't/isn't supposed to criticize her or make her answer questions.
"...the push, by a nonpartisan group based in New York called Generation Citizen, which seeks to promote youth participation in politics, is igniting a debate about voter competency, adolescent decision making and whether allowing younger people to vote is the best way to politically engage teenagers....
"Generation Citizen hopes to raise $1 million in 2016 to finance its efforts. The group has already received $230,000, [Executive Director Scott] Warren said, adding that none of the money came from politicians or partisan organizations.
"But some leading Democrats, most notably Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House Democratic leader, have supported such changes, spurring partisan suspicions about the effort. In a speech this year before a meeting aimed at bringing young leaders and progressive organizations together, Ms. Pelosi said she was "all for" lowering the voting age to 16 or 17 "because when kids are in school, they're so interested, they're so engaged.""
"because it appears even the Mexicans eventually become skeptical that the Democrats aren't actually the BFFs they appear to be"
The 16yr olds, however... they haven't even made it through high school civics yet! they're *perfect* for Tumblrfeels-politics and Unicorn-fart-based-economics.
We got once a discussion in Quebec about lowering the voting age to 16 and one guy replied, if they lower the voting age, why not lowering the drinking age as well? And it was the end of discussion.
whether allowing younger people to vote is the best way to politically engage teenagers
Voting isn't the cause of political engagement, it's the result. If they're paying taxes, they're politically engaged, let 'em vote. Seeing the difference between gross and net on my first paycheck stub sure as hell got me politically engaged, I can tell you that.
"King is director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life, which is a plaintiff in a [lawsuit] against the HHS [abortion/contraception] mandate. The suit was announced at a November press conference in which King and Father Frank Pavone , national director of Priests for Life, participated....
""The HHS mandate infringes upon my rights as a woman, my religious freedom, my civil rights ? and my health and wellbeing," King said. "In the end, natural law ? God's law will always trump common law."
"Civil laws ? like those regarding the HHS mandate "are not written on anyone's conscience or mind," King said. "They are not written in the physical creation, nor are they appended to the Bible. The civil laws of nations are only written in their own law books.""
It occurs to me that, while the supposed presence and harm of racism today is at best extremely difficult to even discern, the actual harms of *being called a racist* are immediately apparent, harmful, wide-ranging and the envelope is constantly being pushed by the people who are so anxious about racism.
Kinda like how the mixing of races was somehow an enormous problem despite no factual evidence being on offer, while the harms of blacks being penalized for associating with whites by people with those beliefs was pretty damn obvious and wide-ranging.
Almost like the "anti-racists" today are in the exact same social position as whites back then were. Hm.
Racism, bigotry, and prejudice are three different things supposedly. But somehow prejudice gets treated the same as racism. The liberals have successfully perverted the meaning of the words in order to gain the power that charges of racism provide.
Sounds like someone needs a class. PCC will clear this up.
Portland Community College has designated April "Whiteness History Month" (WHM), an "educational project" exploring how the "construct of whiteness" creates racial inequality.
Please, PCC, take my money and tell me more about how paying a white community college prof's salary in one of the whitest cities in America will help black people
We are not a racist country any more than we are a murderous country or a rapacious country. We are a country that has as a very tiny percent of its population some racists, murderers, and rapists. The election of BO was the final purging of any sort of "institutional" racism that existed. Large numbers of whites came out and voted for BO just to exorcise some white guilt and "be part of something". Since November 2008, I have refused to take anyone who claims that the US is a racist country seriously.
Damn! Twenty-sixteen is off to a really bad start.
Henley, IMHO, was the better songwriter and singer, but Frye seemed to be the leader that pulled it all together (or broke it apart). I've seen them twice since they got back together and thoroughly enjoyed every show. I realize that some (many) here hate this band, but they are very good at what they do: harmonies, including both voice and instruments.
If blacks are more likely to commit crimes & violations, how is that not racist? If they weren't racist, wouldn't they take care to conform their behavior to that of other races?
In charge of the city's budget amid a financial emergency, the state decided to temporarily switch Flint's water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River as a cost-saving measure until a new supply line to Lake Huron was ready. The river had a reputation for nastiness, and after the April 2014 switch, residents complained their water looked, smelled and tasted funny.
Virginia Tech researchers found the water was highly corrosive. A class-action lawsuit alleges the state Department of Environmental Quality didn't treat the water for corrosion, in accordance with federal law, and because so many service lines to Flint are made of lead, the noxious element leached into the water of the city's homes.
The city switched back to the Lake Huron water supply in October, but the damage was already done to the lead pipes. The state is now handing out filters and bottled water with the National Guard
If America is so racist, why are so many Blacks making millions in movies and TV? The true racist America is Black America, where Black juries acquit obviously guilty murderers like OJ and Black folk believe nonsensical lies spread by Blacks about events such as the Detroit case of Black criminal shot while atacking White cop. No one is more
obsessed by race than today's Blacks, who stupidly attempt to portray themselves as victims of White cops, while
ignoring the overwhelming massacre of their children by other Black children. Blacks have a long way to go before they even approach credibility in anything they claim. In general, one can dismiss almost 99% of what they claim.
America is only still racist because the black people still continue to pull the "race card" and will always continue to do so. Nothing will ever change.
There is this incessant nauseating choir of leftists blaming all the worlds ills on white western males.
That's all the left has though, they have no real platform at all to stand upon, so they need to create grievance, hatred and division where there is none.
The real racists are the ones constantly chanting racism.
Its a free country and there are lots of rich black actors, producers, directors, etc. Why dont they form their own studio, tv, cable, if they dont get traction in white hollywood? Isnt Spike judging soley on color instead of the quality of the white actors and other white industry leaders? The biggest black hollywood producer I can think of is Tyler Perry and he makes crap. Should he get nominated because hes black instead of because the quality of his movies?
I witnessed a big Twitter fight where Adam Baldwin and Nick Searcy heaped scorn upon Don Cheadle for complaining about the whiteness of the Oscar nominations.
Adam Baldwin ?@AdamBaldwin Jan 17
@IamDonCheadle You seem to believe skin color should matter in award nominations.
I reject that notion.
Who's the racist?
#OscarsSoWhite
Of course people in America are still racist in the sense of having in group preference. That just means they're still human.
And it's still racist in having government mandated racial preferences and quotas. But there is some hope the Supreme Court will take an axe to these soon.
Yeah, that's about it. At this point the people who are on the lookout for every bit of casual bigotry still out there are doing far more harm to the state of race relations than any actual racists that still exist.
I was reading user reviews of "The Revenant" at Naver (a Korean equivalent of Yahoo, so to speak) and it was a total Dicaprio lovefest. "He should finally win the award this time"
Some of the white actors are huge overseas. 90's stars like Tom Cruise and Stallone have long ass shelf life outside of America, especially in places like China and Japan.
Hollywood knows this. Their bread and butter is action films and animation, which sells everywhere regardless of the ethnic make up of the cast. It's going to be a crapshoot on whether a small amount of prestige films that comes out late will include minority casts.
There are only a few "minority American" stars who can command the box office and create buzz for his or her acting in Hollywood. Asians and Latinos abroad have their own stars. No one is Asia really cares about..... Ken Jeong and his wretched comedies. But since whatever dinosaur and Marvel film starring white leads are guaranteed to make money, Hollywood has no incentive to take too many risks on unknown non whites.
Holllywood now almost always finds some dumb ploy point to have James Bond be in Shanghai, in order to please the China market. The last Bond film when they did that, it was soooo obvious.
Its the reverse of Jackie Chan movies having to be set in America to sell in America.
Yesterday I was watching that Angie Tribeca marathon on TBS.
It's a somewhat funny show, but I was struck by the casting.
The star is biracial, the daughter of Quincey Jones and Peggy Lipton (of the mod squad). But she looks white with a slight tan.
There are two male characters on the show. One white, one black. Which is her love interest? The white guy. The black guy is just slapstick comic relief, doing the same old Mantan Moreland routine, getting overexcited and making funny faces.
I do get the feeling that a lot of "diverse" casting is done in the interest of tokenism, like just enough non-white people are cast so the filmmakers can be progressive but only the most famous ones are given interesting roles. I also think it's more of a reflection of the biases of those making the films than that of audiences. The average person doesn't walk around seeing non-white people as nothing more than political tokens. Hollywood progressives do.
If you need extras to play the other mechanic at the garage or one of the other people in the waiting room or whatever, it's a white guy. A black guy in a movie is always playing a black guy. There has to be some reason for the guy to be black to hire a black actor. (Except for in a Spike Lee movie where all the extras are black unless there's a reason for the person in the background to be white.) That's because the casting director in charge of hiring the extras hires "just regular people" and that means "people who look like the regular people I know".
It's so funny that Ol' Bomber tells us "it's in our DNA." when he's descended from slave owners on his mother's side and Kenyons - who possibly could have sold other Africans as slaves to Arab traders to re-sell to Dutch and English merchants to re-sell in the Americas.
Yes, there's plenty of racism in the good ol' U.S. of A. and we'll never rid ourselves of it until we - each individual - recognizes it. This applies to everyone.
People complain that life is unjust, that they're treated unfairly. I have this NEWS FLASH, you aren't responsible for what other people do to you, you're only responsible for what you do to other people.
However, much of what is labeled "racism" is prejudice against poor people.
Ferguson: as a white, 60-ish NRA Life member, I was appalled when I saw news photographs of police pointing sniper rifles at the protest crowd. How many rules of safe firearms handling were they violating?
1. Never point your firearm at anything you don't intend to shoot. Always Keep The Muzzle Pointed In A Safe Direction. Be aware of your target and what's beyond it.
2. Never shoot anything you don't intend to destroy.
3. Never shoot anything you don't want to bear the consequences of destroying.
These officers appear to me to be guilty of assault.
Now, did these officers do this out of (perhaps repressed) racism, prejudice against poor people, or out of fear of payback? I surely don't know; only God knows what is actually in peoples' hearts.
Shhhh! Don't challenge the narrative. The USA is the only place on earth where people were held in chattel slavery. And it only happened from the time of that racist of racists Columbus until the end of the Civil War, which was fought for the express purpose of ending slavery.
Au contraire!
Let me introduce you to a nasty little piece of American history that the school history books very conveniently ignore.
Before the coming of the white men, native American Indians routinely enslaved members of other tribes.
Ever wonder how a Shoshone woman like Sacajawea came to be the wife of Toussaint Charbonneau? "The Hidatsa had captured Sacajawea on one of their annual raiding and hunting parties to the west." - Wikipedia. Toussaint Charbonneau brought her west as a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and she had baby Jean Baptiste during the expedition.
The original Oregon Constitution forbade black slavery and expressly forbade blacks from entering Oregon. Why? Because the two largest slave markets west of the Mississippi were on the Columbia River. They dealt in Indian slaves and early pioneer Oregon used Indian slaves, particularly Paiute and Shoshone, extensively. They didn't want black slave trade to interfere with Indian slave trade!
Legally, of course, minorities are not discriminated against. However, affirmative action and similar policies discriminate the other way now. That probably ends up actually hurting those groups it is intended to help.
Socially and culturally, there is a lot of prejudice and discrimination. But that is also largely due to the efforts of progressives, who still effectively push the same kind of separate-but-equal policies that were the cause of so much racism and racial injustice at the beginning of the 20th century.
The policies that encourage African Americans and Native Americans to create and maintain separate cultures. The policies that create lots of special environments and programs specifically for these "minorities".
Here's an example of racism I see on almost every job application I see for academic positions: "Minorities or women will be given special consideration for the position." Racism, pretty clear and simple. What's ironic is that racist policies implemented by progressives like that one tend to drive white guys like me into the private sector, which mainly just cares about who can generate revenue, which also tends to be better paying than academia, which leaves white guys richer and more powerful than they would have been if they'd gone into academia.
If progressives wanted to see black people (or women) become more successful, the first thing they should do is stop corralling them into African Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, and other useless leftist advocacy-based majors, and instead encourage them to study science, math, and finance, and other useful subjects. But then progressivism mainly seems to be about distracting these oppressed groups from doing things that would actually help them become more successful. If progressives like today's had been around a hundred years ago the Italians and Irish and Jews would probably still be living in ghettos devoting their energy to pointless 'activism.'
Let's say in your next life you're offered the choice of being born black or white, male or female, straight or gay, in America or in Yugoslavia, tall or short, good-looking or average looking, rich or not rich, with a Porsche or with a Hyundai - which choices would you make? The fact that tall good-looking rich straight white men owning Porsches in America have it pretty good is proof that racism and sexism and classism and lookism and heightism and homophobia and Porschism are all real problems we need to address. And don't try telling me Porschism isn't just as real as lookism.
Racism, and all the other isms, have fallen on hard times so they gotta do a lot more hype to keep selling the goods. If you can't go with quality you gotta go with quantity. Sure, it may be true that even if Spike Lee wouldn't be bitching about the Oscars quite so much if he was still picking cotton on the plantation his owners kept him on it doesn't change the fact that he's got a legitimate complaint, but everybody and their brother's got a legitimate complaint these days and dammit we may not be perfect but we're trying to get better so cut us some slack, okay? You ever been the evil mastermind behind a worldwide conspiracy to keep 99% of the human race down? You know how much hard work that takes? We can't fix everything at once when we've got economies to collapse and species to wipe out and an entire planetary climate to change. Jeez!
You are so bought & sold, AmSoc. Thinking for yourself is just way too difficult. Maybe impossible.
The big fat fact is that most people face issues and difficulties everyday that have absolutely nothing to do with those problems that are championed by race-baiters. Yes, some blame their everyday problems on racism, or another kind of discrimination. But the cold, hard truth is that most all everyday difficulties are not about race. And that makes life difficult for organizers (like Barak H. Obama) who depend upon focus to get their target audience riled up and fight ready for The Cause (whatever it is, today).
The tide may well be turning. If, and when, the economy tanks, most people, of whatever skin color or ethnic background, will be focused on survival rather than stupid, first-world issues like the ratio of black awarded trophies at the Academy Awards. You and your leftist comrades may well be in the crosshairs of those who accepted you bullshit but now realize that they've been had.
Let's say in your next life you're offered the choice of being born black or white, male or female, straight or gay, in America or in Yugoslavia, tall or short, good-looking or average looking, rich or not rich
As an immigrant, I actually thought about that. I'd gladly have accepted dark skin in trade for US citizenship. African Americans had far better opportunities and were economically far better off (on average) than I was growing up. Yet, ironically, people look at me and call me a "privileged white male" based on appearance alone.
Does OT mean it's time for White reactionaries to latch all their feelings of impotence and rage onto any government dollar that ends up appropriated for a minority racial group. That Civil Rights Museum really pisses me off because we all know that Lincoln was a totalitarian and MLK a Marxist. Sheesch. I have to say slogging through the comments is like boating through a shit sewer connected to the toilets of obese, red-faced, chili-eating rednecks. How do you guys stand the smell? Gross, man.
Btw, I watched the Larry Elders video. The next time I attend a MLK march and see Black students I'm going to *urge* them to join their local Tea Party group and spout off about how liberals and progressives are ruining the country. Shit, man, it's apparent that a Black man can make a good living if they just tell White reactionaries what they want to hear-- in this case, that Black people should just expect the extra scrutiny that police officers give them because of the color of their skin. That's not racism, man, just good police work.
Does OT mean it's time for White reactionaries to latch all their feelings of impotence and rage onto any government dollar that ends up appropriated for a minority racial group.
Actually, "we" have enough money not to care; mostly what makes us unhappy about it is that it keeps hurting those "minority racial groups". But, then, keeping people in bondage is what you want, isn't it, American Socialist? After all, it was the American left that was primarily responsible for racism, segregation and eugenics at the beginning of the 20th century.
"I have to say slogging through the comments is like boating through a shit sewer connected to the toilets of obese, red-faced, chili-eating rednecks. How do you guys stand the smell? Gross, man."
...says AmSoc as he accuses others of bigotry. I guess mirrors are in short supply wherever you live.
Lee said it was no coincidence he posted the message on the 30th anniversary of Martin Luther King's birthday,
MLK was born 29 January, 1929. Spike Lee was born in 1957, twenty eight years later. Sure wish I could have done neat stuff like that when I was only two years old.

If there ever was a Judgement Day, MLK would gain points for his civil rights action, but lose them for creating the voice affectation used by hordes of race hustlers in perpetuity.
The fact that his name graces some of the violentest streets in America isn't his fault.

i think we have talked about racism for so long in this country, we have missed the point, and we are rounding a bend
classic racism, where people are actively held back, denied opportunities, denied equal treatment, treated as inferior... that's long dead.... but in danger of coming back.
what we are left with, is human nature. there are still racists.. people who don't like people who are not like them (both white and black)... but it isn't socially acceptable, even among racists, to deny others based on their feelings. unfortunately... this is starting to change... just not for the white racists. and that is the great irony, and problem when we talk about racism anymore.... it is not about overcoming human nature, and getting people to be more comfortable with each other... it is about hating white people.
classic racism, where people are actively held back, denied opportunities, denied equal treatment, treated as inferior... that's long dead.... but in danger of coming back.
Classic racism isn't about "holding people back". Classic racism is a belief that members of different races consistently differ in IQ, strength, etc. It's basically a scientific theory, albeit a false one. Scientists and progressives then went on to derive all sorts of policies from that belief supposedly to help people, such as segregating people by race, giving people jobs and education supposedly appropriate to their genetic endowment, etc. The effect of that was to "hold people back".

"No one can dispute that the United States has a shameful and persistent history of racism specifically aimed at black Americans, the only group that was held as slaves."
Is that supposed to be sarcastic?? Or do you not know much about American History. Native Americans, for one, were routinely imprisoned.
I've made $76,000 so far this year working online and I'm a full time student.I'm using an online business opportunity I heard about and I've made such great money. It's really user friendly and I'm just so happy that I found out about it.

I dunno FS, the dominant cultures in the Americas figured out that slavery was superior only as long as they weren't hungry. I suspect that was true everywhere in the world at one time or other.
The Americas were a bit behind the times of social development, as were the Australian aborigines. It's amazing how much cultural exchange took place in the Old World of Asia, Europe and to a lesser extent, Africa. The Old World was a larger marketplace of ideas, even in ancient times when you might go your entire life with little to no contact outside of your cultural group.
I remember reading about the Injuns in my neck of the woods. They would take slaves from other tribes and treat them like beloved family pets, almost members of their families. They would keep them like that for years. That is, until a bad season came along. When they got hungry they would slaughter them and eat them without the slightest compunction.
I live on a high hill overlooking a bayou, the exact kind of spot Injuns loved. After every rain I find stone flakes all over the yard, so there certainly was a settlement here, probably for thousands of years.
Every now and then, when picking up those flakes, I wonder what and how many horrors this hill has seen.
I see you weren't taken with the myth of the noble savage. I for one, am a proponent of the savage savage theory of ancient living. Many anachronistic societies lived this savage life right up until very recently when western civilization largely put a stop to it.
It is the same type of system used by cults
It's racist of you to ask this question, Nick.
The Southern Intellectual Poverty Research Center has thrown in the towel on :
""40 white actors in two years and no flava' at all. We can't act? WTF?"..."
and nominated Bender for Best Supporting Robot.
Perhaps if Spike made better films. And say, has Sike ever made a film that wasn't about black folks? If not, that's racist, yo.
25th Hour and Inside Man. What do I win?
Notice the difference between MLK (whose public speeches and utterances have rightly achieved canon status in American public discourse) and Spike Lee, who honors said poet with a sentence including the "word", 'flava'...
nope, you can't act...obviously since you got NO NOMINATIONS, you no talent hack...
Article is missing a trigger warning.
Stop dissing Roy Rogers and Dale Evans !
The racism of yesterday isn't the "racism" of today.
So yes, also, no.
Remember that time Tony was here progsplaining why MLK's individualist sentiment was misguided because he couldn't have accounted for the disparate impact of institutionalized racism today, and that's why affirmative action is justified?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
I don't think too much about him honestly.
I think King would outright support AA though, he supported a $50 billion program just for blacks after all.
"I don't think too much about him honestly."
If you're posting about Tony, good! Honestly is not the way to ever think about him; honesty isn't one of his attributes.
Mic,
Language is one of PC's essential tools, and attempting to carefully use them helps show their weird nonsensicality.
America is probably the least racist country on Earth, at least judging from my own experiences travelling in other countries.
This. Liberals love to point at "democratic socialist" countries as ideal states, but those places happen to be 95% white because they mostly outsourced their slavery to Africa and just left them there once they didn't need them anymore. It's easy to not be racist when 1% of your population is black and they share the same culture.
Never get behind a black dude when clearing customs and immigration at a European airport.
I'd like to see what would happen in the U.S. if basketball fans threw bananas onto the court during a game.
They would stop the game and clean up the bananas. Maybe a player would eat one if he was cramping or something.
Duke did it.
Back in the 80s, iirc.
Players & officials would slip a lot?
Don't forget that Sweden had eugenics codified as law until about the 90's
"America is probably the least racist country on Earth, ..."
Yes, and by more than a little bit.
Except for the south because, you know, The South.
/every smug progressive asshat who thinks she/he/it has played the trump card when they drag this one out of the dumpster.
I've lived in Asia for the past 4 years. Can confirm.
ever talk with a PRC national about African-Americans? A whole new perspective on racism, they think every one who isn't Han is literally an animal.
Sounds like he wasn't invited.
Sounds like everyone else won't be subjected to self-righteous sermons.
Honorary Academy Award winner Spike Lee
So, he got a participation trophy?
Dude needs to quit sulking a make a movie that's good enough to win.
-jcr
If I watched the Oscars, I'm wondering how cringe-inducing next year's token winner will be.

Is America Still Racist?
Of course it is.
The only question is whether or not all levels of government provide equal protection under the law to all people.
Eliminating bigotry within the population is NOT the job of government.
Unless we get equal outcomes there is no equal protection.
/Tony
Thanks for the straight line.
Equal opportunity does not guarantee equal outcomes.
Equal rights do not guarantee equal opportunity.
The only difference between our current crop of far leftists and the Jacobins is merely one of opportunity.
Raaaaaaaacist
You know who else was raaaaaaaacist...
Every white dude ever.
The Democratic Party?
Barack Obama's white grandmother. She hated black men and that's why Barry is so fucked up.
Captain Concasseur?
You can use the search function to find the quote here
I mention this because my first response to an alleged quote from a famous person is to wonder if it's genuine.
Like Winston Churchill said, "you'd be surprised how much shit I didn't say gets put forth on the Internet."
But this King one is genuine.
You would be surprised how often I am the last one to find out about things I have done.
Up with that he should not put.
Is America still racist?
Are we including Spike Lee?
I've been calling Spike Lee a racist since Do The Right Thing. Because he fucking is.
I've been calling Spike Lee's movies dates since Do The Right Thing. Because they are.
date*.
Jesus christ.
Dated.
So you're on the purple drank too?
more skittles, less cough syrup.
What I got from this is that you take your paramour to a lot of Spike Lee flicks.
If black actors want an oscar nomination, do what white people do: play a cripple
Never go full cripple.

Natural blonde/redhead , features pretty symmetrical, not fat, good posture...this is not an unattractive woman, just a very unflattering photo of an unhappy person with no makeup on.
I hope I didn't turn you off on her Crusty.
Aileen rocked the Bowie (non) Brows.
Somewhere underneath all that is Charlize Theron, so...would.

Filmmaker boycotss Oscars for being "so white,"
And there you have it.
Who knew Smeagol was a racist filmmaker?
Lord of the Rings is full of microaggressions, some racial. It should be banned on all campuses.
Filmmaker boycotss Oscars for being "so white Jewish"
FTFY.
New York values . . .
Oy vey!
Black people can't be racist, Playa. White people can't not be racist.
Try to keep up. Geez.
Thanks to Spike Lee the Academy found out that Tarantino is a racist filmmaker and therefore they could not nominate SLJ for an Oscar.
^This! His films betray a reflexive racism "covered" by his progressive political stances
Hmmm. No. I don't think QT's films are reflexively racist.
Filmmaker boycotss Oscars for...
Keeping The Precious away from him?
I got nothing.
I didn't even have to look at the byline in the next line.

and didnt Lucy get fired for that shit?
DON'T TALK ABOUT LUCY
she was my favorite. And I made it known first that she was my favorite...the rest of you were Lucy bandwagonners.
The first rule of perpetuating racism is to always contextualize things in terms of race.
and thus never find the true problem
There is one word that will solve racism in America: reparations.
So what is 8a?
"reparations".
Someone once asked me what that word meant. I told them it was a term to describe "Gang-rape", by combining 'Rape' with 'corporations'. I suppose it was true in a sense.
Who said, "you get more of what you pay for?"
Nope, not even that.
There is only one problem with this theory. Whatever reparations are paid won't be enough to fully stop racism, so more will always be needed. White people are too racist to ever fully own up and pay enough.
I guess one would have to determine the value of 40 acres and a mule would be in today's cost.
Nah. Blacks shouldn't be forced to repay White America. It's all good.
JERRY: I don't know what to tell you, Elton.
" Is America Still Racist?"
Insofar that anyone can still gain social or political or economic benefit from claiming so, then yes.
When the claim stops being something that provides people attention and moral-advantage, 'America' will magically stop being Racist.
I guess Spike's not showing up to vote Democrat either.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Happy MLK Day, nick!
Mazel Tof! I think a step in the right direction in the continuing struggle for racial equality is to completely dismantle the public school system and let the White and Asian children of Google employees attend schools together. I have a dream!
Forced busing will fix this.

Tov.
Ugh, how racist.
the blame lies with my wife on this one.
ugh, sexist
Too bad it's not a dream of not being the shittiest, lamest sockpuppet ever.

Ho hum.
Free association is what you joke about? You sarcastically joke that it would be racist for asians and whites to freely associate together? You're are not indicting asians and whites for racism, here. You are indicting yourself.
Asians are the other white meat
Baiters gonne bate.
#BlackRidersMatter
#CaveTrollLivesMatter
I dispute the persistence, at least in regards to the institutional racism which is the only one conducive to empirical measurement, regular ole racism exists in every society towards just about any conceivable group. And more importantly I reckon that many Native Americans and historians would vehemently contest the notion that blacks were the only group ever held as slaves.
Not just Native Americans.
The Oscars are in no way representative of America outside of the closed society that is the film industry.
Once the revolution comes and the new workers' paradise is established, then this country will stop being racist. As if by magic.
The funny thing about Marxism, it assumes that the State will dissolve itself in the end, once utopia is established. So what is the motive for the State to enact utopia?
Marx instructed that Utopia was inevitable.
Have faith!
NPR is buttering up the Black Lives Matter people now.
^THIS. National Propaganda Radio is having a godamn lefty wet dream field day.
Also, how can an abstraction such as a nation possess the human quality of being a racist?
Is the nation privileged?
Well, there's this thing called synechdoche.
And the governments of nations are certainly capable of being racist.
So he believes corporations....are people?
Soylent Green is People!
concepts as 'state' and 'society' and 'government' have no existence save as physically exemplified in the acts of self-responsible individuals
And? That's still something that exists.
There's also this thing called pointless pedantry. You know damn well what I mean by "governments are capable of being racist".
🙂 Just had the urge to split a libertarian hair.
Fair play.
Because the nation (and its government) exists separate and apart from the population. It is a separate entity completely independent from the people who staff it or that it rules over. Ask any progressive.
Right because white actors and of course white people in general are bland and flavorless. No variation there, no sir.
If I were hiring a studio exec, I'd definitely pick the guy with a questionable grasp of his native language.
Using a particular vernacular English doesn't mean you don't have a grasp of the language.
Otherwise, yeah, right on.
I'll concede that it's a tenuous grasp. If it makes you feel better, I feel the same about hillbillies that use the word "them" in place of "those".
It doesn't make me feel anything. It's just a fact about language. There is more than one consistent grammar for the English language.
Word.
You mean "lots of FLAVAS".
Lame.
Damon makes it hard for me too suspend disbelief
I have never understood the love of Matt Damon.
Oh, here ya go.
"The truth is we ain't in those rooms,"
"If I were hiring a studio exec, I'd definitely pick the guy with a questionable grasp of his native language."
I ain't even gonna ask what you mean by that.

Has anyone else watched The Man In The High Castle?
I feel people in high castles are a microagression against the non-landed gentry such as myself.
*quietly starves in alley*
Doesn't the non-landed gentry live among the landed gentry? I mean you're still gentry after all. If you're actually starving, you're gentrifying all wrong.
Yes, sir. I finished the season. I liked it. It was not great, and it dragged on at times, but overall I enjoyed it. The dude who plays the super Nazi guy is fantastic.
Sewell did nail it, as well as Cary Tagawa and the Nazi traitor actor.
Not sure I get the point of Gorman's role.
One of the advantages of being sick is being able to finish a series without interruption because everyone is afraid of you.
Overall I liked it, didn't love it.
I completely agree with your first two points - those actors were fantastic, and Gorman's role was just silly.
The show has a tremendous amount of potential, so I am glad there will be a second season. They need to increase the pace a little for sure.
Not sure I get the point of Gorman's role.
To show Torchwood fans that this was the kind of psychopath Owen was going to turn out to be if he hadn't gotten killed first.
I watched the first 4 or 5 episodes. It's very good. Very high production values, good writing, excellent performances. Alexa Davalos is...gorgeous. It is, however, pretty bleak and moves quite slowly. I'm going to finish the season, but I need to be in a different frame of mind for it.
She really is.
She looks like transgendered Skeletor.

I just heard a thing on NPR about a campaign to lower the voting age to 16 - bringing in Martin Luther King to the discussion.
And I found this NY Times article -
"...the push, by a nonpartisan group based in New York called Generation Citizen, which seeks to promote youth participation in politics, is igniting a debate about voter competency, adolescent decision making and whether allowing younger people to vote is the best way to politically engage teenagers....
Pelosi said she was "all for" lowering the voting age to 16 or 17 "because when kids are in school, they're so interested, they're so engaged.""
lol
"because it appears even the Mexicans eventually become skeptical that the Democrats aren't actually the BFFs they appear to be"

I wonder what Martin Luther King's niece Alveda is up to?
Let's take a look...
Haha. Have progressives told her yet that this means she's not a *real* King?
All assault is murder. All war is genocide. All fiscal restraint is intended to impoverish masses of poor minorities.
Hyperbole is objective impartiality.
What do these people say when they encounter a *real* racist?
"OMG for once we're not making it up!"
Sounds like someone needs a class. PCC will clear this up.
Portland Community College has designated April "Whiteness History Month" (WHM), an "educational project" exploring how the "construct of whiteness" creates racial inequality.
PC College?
Portland Community College, you say?
Please, PCC, take my money and tell me more about how paying a white community college prof's salary in one of the whitest cities in America will help black people
I moved here from NC and almost went snow-blind walking around downtown.
Yep. It's a good cut-off date.
Glenn Frey is dead.

Glenn Frey?
Well, just SHIT. Dammit.
RIP, Glenn. Now that you've got yours.
BARF.
The Eagles are good. Anyone who tells you different is guilty of racism.
Was he 69? Bowie and the British actor were both 69.
If blacks are more likely to commit crimes & violations, how is that not racist? If they weren't racist, wouldn't they take care to conform their behavior to that of other races?
Flint, MI has water problems
I blame the koch brothers.
I blame the state, which (legally, via a recent enabling statute) usurped local authority.
Republican governor appointed democrat manager who bought cheap poisoned water.
Wouldn't have happened if Flint didn't suck.
If only there was a way to take the money away from liberals . . . all this would go away.
Don't muggings & burglaries work?
Rule of three: Fox News reporting that Glenn Frey has died.
You're lumping Frey in with Bowie??
America is only still racist because the black people still continue to pull the "race card" and will always continue to do so. Nothing will ever change.

Deep thoughts, anonbot, deep thoughts.
I think he's being ironic, since he put race card in quotes.
It's only a matter of time before he's quoting Max Weber to defend his points.
Yes, America is still racist.
WHYCOME THEY AINT GOT NO BLACK WALMART, HUH?
Oprah Winfrey.
She's responsible for Tyler Perry.
She could do a lot more, being incredibly rich and powerful, but instead she chose to give the world Tyler Perry.
Yeah, his stuff is pretty painful/terrible/silly.

I reject that notion.

Of course people in America are still racist in the sense of having in group preference. That just means they're still human.
And it's still racist in having government mandated racial preferences and quotas. But there is some hope the Supreme Court will take an axe to these soon.
Anyone complaining about the obvious racism in NBA hiring yet?

I thought Naver was like USA Today
That said, I don't think the solution is to whine and pout and boycott award shows. The Oscars hasn't been relevant for decades.
*hasn't even
If you need extras to play the other mechanic at the garage or one of the other people in the waiting room or whatever, it's a white guy.
Just imagine Fort Apache: the Bronx with an all-white cast.
I surely don't know; only God knows what is actually in peoples' hearts.
...the only group that was held as slaves.
Not even true if you only count chattel slavery. Particularly untrue if you count indentured servitude.
Shhhh! Don't challenge the narrative. The USA is the only place on earth where people were held in chattel slavery. And it only happened from the time of that racist of racists Columbus until the end of the Civil War, which was fought for the express purpose of ending slavery.
jeez, I thought the Europeans were the last in and first out on slavery (at least of black Africans)
It is true within the context being discussed (i.e., the United States). The other activities you're describing were pre-1776.
What does "Is America still racist?" even mean?
Legally, of course, minorities are not discriminated against. However, affirmative action and similar policies discriminate the other way now. That probably ends up actually hurting those groups it is intended to help.
Socially and culturally, there is a lot of prejudice and discrimination. But that is also largely due to the efforts of progressives, who still effectively push the same kind of separate-but-equal policies that were the cause of so much racism and racial injustice at the beginning of the 20th century.
What separate but equal policies? You mean like Black people get to go to college now?
The policies that encourage African Americans and Native Americans to create and maintain separate cultures. The policies that create lots of special environments and programs specifically for these "minorities".
Don't know what the word separate means?
Jeez!
Your post reeks of crackpotism
As an immigrant, I actually thought about that. I'd gladly have accepted dark skin in trade for US citizenship. African Americans had far better opportunities and were economically far better off (on average) than I was growing up. Yet, ironically, people look at me and call me a "privileged white male" based on appearance alone.
hi nick,
Does OT mean it's time for White reactionaries to latch all their feelings of impotence and rage onto any government dollar that ends up appropriated for a minority racial group.
Are you accusing us of eating chilis?

"hi nick,"
hi shitbage, you left strawmen all over your post.
Fuck off, slaver.
That Pol Pot guy, like, killed a couple people, man. Ah well.
Fuck off asswipe, glad to know I'm armed and statist fucks like you aren't.
Actually, "we" have enough money not to care; mostly what makes us unhappy about it is that it keeps hurting those "minority racial groups". But, then, keeping people in bondage is what you want, isn't it, American Socialist? After all, it was the American left that was primarily responsible for racism, segregation and eugenics at the beginning of the 20th century.

...says AmSoc as he accuses others of bigotry.
Nah. Spike Lee is so transcendent, he went back in time as an adult.

SMDH.
I'm lookin' at you, Gillespie.
Is the United States one of the least racist counties in the world?
The United States is THE least racist country in the world by far.
If there ever was a Judgement Day, MLK would gain points for his civil rights action, but lose them for creating the voice affectation used by hordes of race hustlers in perpetuity.
The fact that his name graces some of the violentest streets in America isn't his fault.
"neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right."
So, the exact opposite of yours?
"is America still racist?"
Spike Lee is an American.
Spike Lee is openly racist.
Ipso-facto, America is racist.
#SpikeSoRacist?
Yes. Prove me wrong.

i think we have talked about racism for so long in this country, we have missed the point, and we are rounding a bend
classic racism, where people are actively held back, denied opportunities, denied equal treatment, treated as inferior... that's long dead.... but in danger of coming back.
what we are left with, is human nature. there are still racists.. people who don't like people who are not like them (both white and black)... but it isn't socially acceptable, even among racists, to deny others based on their feelings. unfortunately... this is starting to change... just not for the white racists. and that is the great irony, and problem when we talk about racism anymore.... it is not about overcoming human nature, and getting people to be more comfortable with each other... it is about hating white people.

*enslaved, not imprisoned

You know who else made slaves out of those they did not outright slaughter?
The Romans, Greeks, Macedonians, Norse, Egyptians, Berbers, and Persians?
Nick Gillespie? 😉
Every large enough African and Mesoamerican civilization.
Every ancient group of people who realized that slavery was a superior economic model as compared to cannibalism.
The Tuaregs?
Bruno Ganz?
+1 puts it where momma keeps the peanut butter
I dunno FS, the dominant cultures in the Americas figured out that slavery was superior only as long as they weren't hungry. I suspect that was true everywhere in the world at one time or other.
The Americas were a bit behind the times of social development, as were the Australian aborigines. It's amazing how much cultural exchange took place in the Old World of Asia, Europe and to a lesser extent, Africa. The Old World was a larger marketplace of ideas, even in ancient times when you might go your entire life with little to no contact outside of your cultural group.
*not to say that every ancient people had this realization. I'm just talking about the ones who did
I was making a joke.
Fuck you man. If you don't like my fuckin' music get your own fuckin' cab!
Me neither. I was more than satisfied with how the Redskins beat them twice this season.
To be fair, Gillespie is a slave to The Jacket and was only doing its bidding.
I see you weren't taken with the myth of the noble savage. I for one, am a proponent of the savage savage theory of ancient living. Many anachronistic societies lived this savage life right up until very recently when western civilization largely put a stop to it.
