  • And if somebody who was NOT a police officer had panicked and shot Tamir?
    video footage

A grand jury has declined to indict the police officer who shot and killed Tamir Rice, 12, who was carrying a pellet gun in a park in Cleveland, Ohio. A prosecutor called it a "perfect storm of human error." Yes, that was the prosecutor, not the officer's attorney.

  • A computer security researcher found a database of personal information about 190 million U.S. voters exposed and open on the Internet.
  • A police officer in Puerto Rico is in custody after taking three other officers hostage and fatally shooting them.
  • Meadowlark Lemon, famed member of the Harlem Globetrotters, has died at age 83.
  • Canada is expecting to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February.
  • Apparently Justin Bieber's label has decided the best way to publicize his new album in San Francisco is via spray-painted graffiti. The city is not happy, probably because it's yet another target for people to piss on.

A prosecutor called it a “perfect storm of human error.”

A prosecutor who doesn’t want to make our overcrowded prison situation worse.

      Hello.

      1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

How are you? It’s so typical of me to talk about myself, I’m sorry.

        1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

          1-888-252-6300. Unicef.org. Change a life Crusty.

          1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

At least I can say that I’ve tried to tell you I’m sorry for breaking your heart. But it doesn’t matter, it clearly
            doesn’t tear you apart anymore.

            1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

No. They treat me well here. They control my suicidal tendencies with pills. Lotsa pills.

Crusty, since you appear to have been having trouble too: look here.

At some point I will stop being lazy and add auto-updates. Maybe.

              1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

I did that! Thank you again.

Updated to the latest version of fascr, or set “xpinstall.signatures.required” to false? The former is preferable, as the latter option is slightly unsafe and is slated to be removed from future versions of Firefox.

    3. Aloysious   9 years ago

Maybe the prosecutor was referring to his own ineptness as ‘a perfect storm of human error retardation corruption’.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

It’s perfect storms all the way up.

    4. cavalier973   9 years ago

We need to find some incentive for prosecutors to do the right thing with regard to cases of police killing civilians.

No doubt on a server housed in a bathroom in New Jersey. Like all good government computers and email accounts which are considered irrelevant by the New York Times.

Proof: There’s no way 190 million Americans are actually voting.

    2. Rt. Hon. Judge Woodrow Chipper   9 years ago

At least MY data is safe.

    3. Jerryskids   9 years ago

Voter registration records are public information. You used to have a database of similar public information in convenient book form delivered right to your doorstep by the phone company. I’m not sure what all the alarm is here. Seems to me somebody was doing an inadvertent public service by collecting all this information in one spot.

    Reality hits Chipotle. Hard:

“The company told Business Insider it may start scaling back on its use of local ingredients, as well, because smaller suppliers will most likely have difficulty meeting its new standards for food safety and testing.”
    http://www.sfgate.com/technolo…..722821.php

Yes, there’s a reason we don’t grow foods under piles of manure any more.

    1. Rich   9 years ago

“The company told Business Insider it may start scaling back on its use of local ingredients, as well

      as offering free Pepto-Bismol “margaritas”.

    2. Brochettaward   9 years ago

I always wonder if people who think natural is healthier ever contemplate that, if truly natural, it means it was grown in shit. I don’t think they do.

      1. Hamster of Doom   9 years ago

Natural and organic means Gaia kissed the sterile white package into being at the local grocery store.

    3. RAHeinlein   9 years ago

Chipotle utilization of local ingredients is a fallacy – the narrative diverts focus from their nearly non-existent (for a chain of this size) quality and training programs.

    4. american socialist   9 years ago

Doing away with these pesky FDA regulations so that we can get beef tartare at the local farmers market will probably mean less vomiting and bloating.

      1. Heroic Mulatto   9 years ago

On my wife’s family farm in northeastern Thailand, I ate raw beef salad from freshly slaughtered cattle quite often. I would never think of doing such a thing in the States. The regulations, which are geared more toward factory farming, provide perverse incentives for farmers to keep their cattle less clean than your average 3rd World subsistence farmer would.

Contemplate that on the Tree of Woe.

      2. Hyperbolical (wadair)   9 years ago

So, AmSoc, is Chipotle in trouble because the FDA called them on a transgression of regulations, or is it because people got sick; the media broadcast these facts; and other potential customers voted with their pocketbooks?

As a typical statist, you can’t imagine how standards would be maintained without government. BTW, have you ever heard of Deming, Juran, and the development of quality standards in the automotive industry? No government here, AmSoc. Government is out of its league when compared to the quality standards of industry. We’re talking about customer satisfaction and cost containment. No government agency can even address these.

Socialism/Fascism/Corporatism is very old and obsolete, AmSoc. Get with the program and enter the twenty-first century.

        1. cavalier973   9 years ago

There is no such thing, even in theory, as an unregulated free market. A society that is pure anarcho-capitalism would still have competition in the marketplace.

            Uh, wait….

            1. kbolino   9 years ago

The power of Republicans to obstruct is inversely proportional to their actual power. Don’t you know that Detroit was utterly devastated solely because of the one Republican who sat on the city council in the last 50 years?

    5. Jerryskids   9 years ago

There’s a reason McDonald’s gets all its fries from one company. Rather than not putting all your eggs in one basket, they believe in putting all your eggs in one basket and then keep your eye on the basket. Local procurement means you’re dealing with a hundred different little companies and practically guaranteeing that at least one of them you’re not going to be able to keep a close eye on. You deal with one company and you can put your own guy inside to be looking over everybody’s shoulder and making sure everything stays kosher.

      1. In League with the Dark Ones   9 years ago

That’s why big government likes big business ? better to regulate a handful of large companies than deal with regulating millions of small companies.

Buzzfeed investigates the alt right, with help from Ken White:

This can all make it difficult to discern who’s a real racist and who’s a troll doing it to be edgy, as Ken White, the lawyer and blogger at Popehat and a keen observer of politics on the Internet, pointed out. The Popehat Twitter feed, co-run by White, has described alt right as “white supremacy for people with soft hands.”

“It’s really hard to tease out the genuine white nationalists from the trolls,” White told BuzzFeed News, but, “at a certain point, the distinction isn’t meaningful. If you spend all day saying white nationalist things online but you claim you’re doing it ironically, it’s not clear to me what the difference really is.”

    1. Tonio   9 years ago

We could teach them a thing or two here…

    2. SIV   9 years ago

I’m disappointed Ken didn’t use the “fucking goats ironically” line but I guess Buzzfeed is a “family website”.

      1. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

        You read my mind.

    3. Rich   9 years ago

“It’s really hard to tease out the genuine white nationalists from the trolls.”

      And your point is ??

    4. R C Dean   9 years ago

If you spend all day saying white nationalist things online but you claim you’re doing it ironically, it’s not clear to me what the difference really is.

The difference is, you’re not a white nationalist?

      Jeebus, Ken. Way to disappoint.

      1. Rich   9 years ago

I thought he was being sarcastic.

        1. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

          Think again.

          1. Rich   9 years ago

Come on, Nikki. Must I *always* use the “/sarc”?

            1. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

              Only when you’re being meta-sarcastic.

              1. Rich   9 years ago

I mean, if you wander around fucking goats, does it matter to anyone that you’re doing it ironically?

You’ve solved the Ship of Theseus paradox?

        1. gaoxiaen   9 years ago

It works with motorcycles (except for the crankcase). The crankcase says 1952, so it’s a 1952, with oversized pistons and valves, big cam, etc… Don’t need turn signals, no air pollution inspection.

          1. Heroic Mulatto   9 years ago

            Interesting.

            1. DblEagle   9 years ago

Or as the old rancher said: “I love this ax and have used it for 20 years. I have only had to put on three new ax heads and four new ax handles. This is a great old ax.”

      4. Rt. Hon. Judge Woodrow Chipper   9 years ago

And here I thought Ken was a friend of the woodchippers.

        1. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

Friend of woodchippers != friend of racists

        2. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

I mean, I guess not everyone knows that these people routinely call Ken and people like him “cucks” for adopting nonwhite children. I don’t think he appreciates that kind of shit very much, you know?

          1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

The instant anti-Semitic tweets the author received after the guy tweeted about her interview was not ironic. It is pathetic and boring.

Inspired by alt-rights, complained to kids that I am a racial minority in my own house. They seemed unimpressed. I need a bunker.

Ah ha ha. I think Ken’s got the right idea; there’s no reasonable response to these people other than vicious mockery.

              1. Warty   9 years ago

Correct. These fucking idiots don’t deserve to be treated with any respect.

there’s no reasonable response to these people other than vicious mockery.

they couldn’t care less about vicious mockery, they crave the attention. Not every bit of idiotspeak requires a retort – ignoring it is often the cruelest response.

WHYCOME HE BES A FAGGOT CUCK

    5. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

So I use a lot of hand lotion, what’s the big deal?

    6. greasonable   9 years ago

So, Popehat comes out against satire? Because satire and trolling are about as different (if not less) than trolling is from sincerity.

      1. Warty   9 years ago

Are you stupid or merely illiterate?

        1. greasonable   9 years ago

Trolling is making it look like you are for a bad position. Satire is making it look like you for for a bad position, but, at least when done properly (though it often isn’t), going a little too far to seem sincere. However, due to Poe’s law, you can’t always be entirely sure.

          1. greasonable   9 years ago

So, fine, if you need me to be clear, then Popehat comes out against satire that can’t be detected by everybody.

          2. Warty   9 years ago

Ken’s clearly not against satirizing these morons.

            1. Heroic Mulatto   9 years ago

I would say it’s the “all day” aspect that he’s against. Also known as the “Jon Stewart Feint”: spend 99.99 percent of your time spewing outrageously ideological half-truths and lies and when called on it, shrug your shoulders and say “It’s comedy!”

            2. greasonable   9 years ago

I think that is the real situation, but the rule he sets up doesn’t necessarily allow for it.

I’m not going to abide sloppiness just because I agree with someone’s opinion on the subject.

The state Supreme Court set a high bar for citizens to prevail in lawsuits against government or police officials, with a recent ruling upholding the immunity of Concord police and the city of Concord in what the judges called “a close case.”

The ruling last Wednesday stems from the 2009 arrest of John Farrelly by Concord police officers Walter Carroll and Eric Pichler after Farrelly allegedly sent a series of harassing emails to his ex-girlfriend.

The two arrested Farrelly on a charge of harassment. According to Farrelly’s testimony, Pichler told him at the time, “This is what you get for f—- with a 30-year veteran of the Concord PD.”

    1. DEG   9 years ago

      Later from the story:

Because the officers believed that the crime had occurred within the past 12 hours, they arrested Farrelly without a warrant. They were later informed by the county attorney that the statute cited in Farrelly’s arrest had been ruled unconstitutional and the charges were dropped.

The warrantless arrest would have been legal only if Farrelly’s conduct presented a “credible present threat” to his ex-girlfriend’s safety.

“During his deposition, Pichler stated that the plaintiff was probably not a present threat to his ex-girlfriend,” according to the ruling.

      And:

The Superior Court judge agreed that the warrantless arrest was unlawful, but ruled that the defendants were immune from prosecution because the officers’ actions, while possibly negligent, were not “wanton or reckless.”

Farrelly appealed to the state Supreme Court, which upheld the lower court ruling granting the officers and the city of Concord immunity.

    Sovereign citizen scare story

In June, police showed up at Norman Raddatz’s door to arrest him on a criminal harassment charge involving an ongoing anti-Semitic hate crimes case.

When they tried to enter, Raddatz fired more than 50 rounds from a high-powered rifle inside his home, killing one officer and wounding another, authorities said. After the shooting subsided, the house burst into flames, and Raddatz’s body was later found in the charred remains.

Raddatz was described as a sovereign citizen, and the incident compares with a number of other violent confrontations involving sovereigns over the past year.

Except that it occurred in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Just in case you thought there was any sanity or shame left in this administration: State Dept. counts ‘bringing peace’ to Syria as a 2015 win

A boastful recap of the State Department’s accomplishments, written by spokesman John Kirby, includes the bold subheadline of “Bringing Peace, Security to Syria” above a more modest entry talking about U.S. aid for those affected by the country’s turmoil and the U.S. push for a political transition from President Bashar Assad.

I noticed Rand Paul signs and bumper stickers popping up in southern NH. I count more Rand Paul signs than Trump and Clinton signs and bumper stickers combined.

I think a lack of Trump signs and stickers means little. I think he’ll be the prime example of the “shy Tory” syndrome this election: he has a lot of support from people to embarrassed to admit it. I am seeing lots of anecdotal reports of Democrats who are going to vote for him, but won’t admit it publicly.

    3. kbolino   9 years ago

So who’s the firefighter in the analogy?

I thought “white knighting” was extremely problematic. Now this cartoon implies that we should all be “doing something” on behalf of black people, because their lives matter particularly?

      I’m confused.

      1. kbolino   9 years ago

doing something should be emphasized, not in scare quotes

      2. Notorious UGCC   9 years ago

    Oh’ Chicago and America

The COPs are now shooting the neighbors and kids with toy guns.

You know who is to blame:

The BLACK people calling the POLICE on other BLACK people. THis happened in this case and in yesterday’s chicago shooting.

As for the Cops shooting 1st and asking questions later, that’s par for the course.
The officer responsible for the shooting is now on Paid Vacation and will be cleared on this…as always.

    1. kbolino   9 years ago

I doubt the person who called the police intended for Rice to get shot. But if the caller knew that Rice had a “toy gun”, then why didn’t he or she confront him directly before calling the police? “Hey, young man, that gun looks realistic and you could get hurt if someone mistakes it for the real thing.” If he tells you to fuck off, then wash your hands of it. I don’t know what calling the police was supposed to accomplish, given the facts at hand.

    2. Rhywun   9 years ago

I can’t fault a person for calling the cops to “fix” an obviously dangerous situation, because that is after all their fucking job. They have to learn their mistake somehow.

  27. Heroic Mulatto   9 years ago

Wait just a minute! Privately sponsored??

I don’t know how it works in Canada, but in the US, all refugees are “privately” sponsored. That is, the Federal government grants them refugee status, but 1 of 9 voluntary agencies or VOLAGs do the sponsorship. Sponsorship meaning that the agency is legally and financially responsible for the refugee. Since the US Office of Refugee Resettlement provides the VOLAGs with some funding, with the agency expected to raise the rest of the funds, the best descriptor would be private-public, but as far as I know there is no purely public refugee resettlement program currently operating in the US.
