I happened to be in London for Bush v. Gore, and watching the BBC report on it was surreal.

They really thought the other shoe was dropping on global superpowers - they were reporting it as straight up "the USSR went down in '92, and now here goes the US - we all knew it was coming! What will a post-US world look like?" and such.

Trump appears to have unearthed what my liberal relations have all along said. That a significant part of the Republican party is a bunch of racist troglodytes, and the right never accepts openly that they rely on these people, but dog whistle to them every election. Trump has, perhaps, brought them into the daylight. But I say appears because it may be a protest type vote for many. Damn effective protest at this point.

Yeah, I grew weary of hearing that same line from my liberal friends. Coming from a conservative background, I couldn't see it. None of my family/friends would ever go for this sort of stuff. Now I am seriously re-evaluating that perspective.

I think a little bit is the protest point. I also see a lot of people disavowing Trump's more extreme points but defending him all the same with standard TEAM RED rhetoric. I think there is a good core of racists and bigots and more people who have been defending the right so long that they reflexively give Trump the benefit of the doubt until he makes them look real bad- as he is doing now.

I think there's something to this. The mouth-frothing white-nationalist vote is still out there, but it is shrinking to the point where the Republican establishment is starting to try to shed it rather than wink-wink, nudge-nudging them into the back of the tent.

This means the white-nationalists see their that their time is coming to either put up or shut up, and Trump is giving them a lightning rod. I don't even think he's doing it intentionally - he just says whatever keeps him in the headlines, but he's rallying these people behind him by doing so.

What may wind up happening is something like the break-up of the Whig party, where the "nativists" followed Fillmore into a failed single-issue party while the rest of the Whigs embraced Abolitionism and became Republican - i.e. Trump may well inadvertently siphon the racist vote out of the Republican Party, and the party will be better for it.
