George Zimmerman Suspended From Twitter for Revenge-Porn Posts

Lest anyone think that George Zimmerman—the man who fatally shot Florida teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012—has any redeeming qualities, here's a story about what the 32-year-old has been up to recently. On Thursday, Zimmerman took to Twitter to besmirch an ex-girlfriend whom he alleges cheated on him "with a dirty Muslim." In retaliation, Zimmerman posted nude photos and contact information for the woman. He also accused her of stealing cash and a gun from him.

Twitter has since removed the tweets, and suspended Zimmerman's account. The company told the New York Daily News that its terms "prohibit sharing someone's personal phone and email addresses, as well as intimate photos taken or distributed without the person's consent."

As a resident of Orlando, Florida, Zimmerman could face criminal charges for the posts, though there's no indication that police are considering it. Under an anti-cyberharassment law that took effect October 1, Florida prohibits posting so-called revenge porn, defined as "a sexually explicit image of a person that contains or conveys the personal identification information of the depicted person to an Internet website without the depicted person's consent, for no legitimate purpose, with the intent of causing substantial emotional distress to the depicted person."

Carrie Goldberg of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative told the News that the photos Zimmerman posted may not be sexually explicit enough to qualify for revenge porn charges, though he could potentially be charged under stalking or harassment statutes.

"Zimmerman's publication of the victim's personal information like her phone number and email address suggest an intention to incite third parties to contact this woman in a sort of harassment-by-proxy scenario," Goldberg said. "Not only could he be arrested criminally, but this behavior makes a strong case for the victim to obtain an order of protection from family court."

Zimmerman, who was ultimately acquitted of second-degree murder charges for Martin's death, retweeted a picture of the teen's dead body in September; he later claimed it had been by accident. "I did not, and never will knowingly re-tweet a picture of a deceased body," Zimmerman wrote in response. "I do not want to see or relive the night that I was attacked and had to use lethal force to defend my life."

In August, Zimmerman began selling a limited-edition run of prints of a painting he did of the Confederate flag. Proceeds from the sales benefitted a gun store that refused to sell to Muslim customers.

    what a winner.

    1. Idle Hands   10 years ago

      good lord:

Twitter told the New York Daily News the company does not comment on individual accounts, but the social media platform's "rules prohibit sharing someone's personal phone and email addresses, as well as intimate photos taken or distributed without the person's consent."

Less than a month ago, Zimmerman posted a photo of Trayvon Martin's dead body on Twitter and later said it was posted in error.

      what a dbag.

  2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   10 years ago

Twitter has one excellent quality, it's useful for outing retards.

    1. Hugh Akston   10 years ago

You mean anyone who uses Twitter?

      1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   10 years ago

No, actually, I'm not that big a meany.

But it greases the rails of social darwinism.

I am in waaaay too glass a house to throw any stones in that regard, m'self.

I dunno, I find it useful for my gaming. Haven't seen much retardation around that.

  4. Fist of Etiquette   10 years ago

It is possible the Z-Man's head got effed up as a result of the Martin shooting and its aftermath instead of the other way around. I doubt it, but, you know, someone has to stir trouble here.

    1. Idle Hands   10 years ago

Isn't that the plot of Rocky V?

      1. Fist of Etiquette   10 years ago

        Plot, you say?

        1. Idle Hands   10 years ago

I use that term as defined by the FBI.

    2. Microaggressor   10 years ago

His life was pretty much ruined by the publicity. I didn't expect him to go full troll mode, but what do you expect of a man with nothing left to lose?

      1. Zeb   10 years ago

He could have moved and kept a low profile and probably been fine. He chose not to.

        1. Illocust   10 years ago

This circus went on for months, and his face was on every major news publication. I don't think he could disappear on his own. Really there needs to be a witness protection program for people like this.

          1. Gray Ghost   10 years ago

I'm surprised he didn't move to Peru, where I thought he had family, and become Jorge Zamora or such. I'm also surprised that someone hasn't successfully taken up Spike Lee on his implied offer.

          2. Zeb   10 years ago

Or he could try not behaving like an idiot.

          3. Sevens   10 years ago

"Really there needs to be a witness protection program for people like this." Good thought. Not to mention that the anti-discrimination crowd should take a look at the discrimination he faces.

    3. LoneWaco   10 years ago

it's not paranoia if they are actually out to get you, and they were, at levels that probably can't be understood by others who didn't go through it. it probably took a toll.

    4. Illocust   10 years ago

I'm thinking that's what happened. He had to shoot and kill someone. Any soldier will tell you that that's a line that messes with your head, even if it's in self defense.
Add in immediately afterwards the levels of harassment he underwent and probably fear for his and his family's life. His marriage dissolves under pressure, and his new girlfriend is someone that thinks these are good conditions to build a romantic relationship under.
The guy needs a new name and a stay at a mental health facility. He can't have a normal life after what he's gone through and honestly continues to go through.

      1. DEATFBIRSECIA   10 years ago

Or he was a douchebag from the get-go and these are the kinds of things douchebags do.

      2. Zeb   10 years ago

Everything I hear about this guy makes me think he is a kind of stupid asshole with some kind of hero complex who happened to get into a fight where he probably legitimately defended himeself. He had the misfortune of somehow being selected as a target for anti-gun dicks and race hustlers, but other than that, he has brought his problems on himself.

        1. Lee G   10 years ago

          This

        2. Gray Ghost   10 years ago

          Couldn't agree more, Zeb.

          1. MSimon   10 years ago

            I could agree more.

        3. Mickey Rat   10 years ago

          That sounds most likely.

      3. fuckyougotmine   10 years ago

I sure hope he didn't bruise his finger ending Trayvon's life. This poor man.

        1. Zeb   10 years ago

          You're a real charmer.

    5. Suthenboy   10 years ago

Sadly Fist, you are wrong. I remember hearing a lot of things about him right after the shooting and concluded he was a fruitloop long before the shooting.

  5. RBS   10 years ago

  7. Monty Crisco   10 years ago

    1. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

There's a description of the FL law against it in the post. Other states have at least tried to pass laws as well. I don't know the state of the various efforts. It is difficult to pass a constitutional law against it.

      1. waffles   10 years ago

It seems open to interpretation. Which is why I am looking for interpretation. I wonder if I could hack my ex's wifi, post some cute pictures of myself, then press charges. Hah-hah! Revenge-revenge porn!

        1. Sevens   10 years ago

Yeah, that precisely the problem. Too open to intepretation. The way it's framed, it's overbroad: "without the depicted person's consent, for no legitimate purpose, with the intent of causing substantial emotional distress to the depicted person". Note how they worked "for no legitimate purpose" into this -- and there's at least one "and" or "or" missing. It's remarkable that they felt the need call the distress "substantial".

          1. Sevens   10 years ago

There's at least one "is" and one "r" missing in this post. Anyway, read the ACLU's related take on US v. Cassidy (federal district court Maryland): http://tinyurl.com/pandvvx (cyber stalking/harassment/violence etc.).

  16. Old.Mexican   10 years ago

Carrie Goldberg of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative told the News that the photos Zimmerman posted may not be sexually explicit enough to qualify for revenge porn charges

That ambiguous statement tells me that the photos are not sexually explicit at all. Maybe I'm being a cynic but I don't think so.

Lest anyone think that George Zimmerman?the man who fatally shot Florida teenager Trayvon Martin successfully defended his life with a gun in 2012[...]

    There. Less innuendo.

    1. Hugh Akston   10 years ago

You know he did actually fatally shoot Trayvon Martin though right? Like that's not even a controversial statement.

      1. Old.Mexican   10 years ago

        Re: Hugh Akston,

You know he did actually fatally shoot Trayvon Martin though right?

I know a lot of people who go out and shoot deer. Except people don't call it "going out to shoot deer"; they call it "going hunting."

Saying "The man who shot Trayvon Martin" sounds too much like "the man who shot Jesse James". There is NO context in that statement. Zimmerman didn't go out looking for someone to shoot. He DEFENDED his life, successfully, with a gun. Looks like THAT is still a "controversy" within some circles.

        1. Hugh Akston   10 years ago

Uh okay whatever. My point is that 'George Zimmerman shot Travyon Martin' is a statement of undisputed fact. Zimmerman's mental state or the contents of his pants or whether his action was legally justified are matters of context and interpretation. His action is not.

        2. DEATFBIRSECIA   10 years ago

False. Dispatcher told him to disengage, so yeah he did go out looking for someone to shoot.

          1. Sevens   10 years ago

"False. Dispatcher told him to disengage, so yeah he did go out looking for someone to shoot."

False. At "best" one can infer that he then went to "look" for someone to maybe shoot.

    2. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

      There. Less innuendo.

I believe you are confused, old chap. The one fact that is incontrovertible, regardless of the position one takes concerning the case, is that Trayvon was fatally shot. Whether or not Zimmerman's life was in actual danger is the fact that can be disputed.

      Jus' sayin'

      1. Old.Mexican   10 years ago

        Re: Heroic Mulatto,

he one fact that is incontrovertible, regardless of the position one takes concerning the case, is that Trayvon was fatally shot.

The fact that is incontrovertible is that the guy is dead. The fact that Zimmerman shot him is a fact without context. That's the point. Elizabeth Nolan Brown starts her article with a sentence that makes it look like Zimmerman simply murdered Martin. He didn't - he DEFENDED his life with a gun. I would've shot Martin if it were me. I certainly would not be crying about it later, unlike Zimmerman.

        1. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

Elizabeth Nolan Brown starts her article with a sentence that makes it look like Zimmerman simply murdered Martin.

It doesn't read that way to me. It reads just as a simple statement of fact.

      2. sloopyinTEXAS   10 years ago

        They're both legally accurate statements:
        1. Fatally shot Trayvon Martin
        2. Defended himself with a handgun

I wonder how many times the second of those two factually accurate statements is written in the media compared to the former. I get OM's point. The media is still trying to paint him as a killer in order to destroy him without libeling him.

"Defended himself with a handgun" does not indicate that Martin died as a result. It doesn't even indicate that shots were fired.

          1. sloopyinTEXAS   10 years ago

"...who fatally shot Trayvon Martin in self defense" would be completely accurate. I thought that was the goal of a journalist, after all.

        2. Zeb   10 years ago

          Well, he is a killer.

  17. sloopyinTEXAS   10 years ago

This guy has had his life destroyed by the media. Pretty much his only chance at a life is to somehow do something shocking enough to get on some reality show.

I wouldn't be too surprised if a lot of his actions are calculated to raise his profile by being as shocking as possible, in hopes that some tv show producer will give him a ring. The alternative, that he's really this much of a douche, is just too sad to contemplate.

    1. sarcasmic   10 years ago

You give the guy too much credit. If he's too dumb to be a cop, he's certainly too dumb to be calculating like that.

      1. sloopyinTEXAS   10 years ago

He's,probably getting a lot of advice from some shady agent that wants to see some kind of return on his investment. It's not good advice, that's for sure.

  18. SugarFree   10 years ago

I just like the fact that he looks more and more like someone that should be followed around because he looks like he might be about to commit a crime despite any evidence that he has or is about to.

    1. sloopyinTEXAS   10 years ago

Now he knows how Mickey Rourke has felt for the last few decades.

  19. sarcasmic   10 years ago

Daily Mail is nice enough to show her fuzzed-out face and her not-so-fuzzed-out boobies.

    1. sloopyinTEXAS   10 years ago

Huh. Guess the DM still hasn't gotten anything more recent than a sixth grade picture of Martin from the AP. How odd, when this one right here is a lot more current and accurately portrays how Martin represented himself.

Why aren't you reaching your goal Reason? Meaningless, shit stories like this.

  21. toolkien   10 years ago

I had Zimmerman pegged as a cop wannabe and a douche right from the get go. Sure he had a right to defend himself with necessary force when his head was being bashed into the ground, which I am reasonably certain was the case, but he was certainly responsible for putting his own dumb ass into the position in the first place.

Many in the commentariat hate cops for their douche bag ways, Zimmerman was one step below that.

I have no problem with DIY protection, even at a neighborhood level. But to be such a Barney Fife through the whole thing where someone is dead, which falls on his shoulders. The only way he should have been following directly is if he knew there was a clear and present danger. If someone is following me without cause, I'm not going to take real kindly to it.

There's plenty of other incidents since that show he's not some protector of the world - he is a nutjob. If there was a quiet life afterward, you could extend some leeway. Zimmerman's just an idiot.

    1. toolkien   10 years ago

      cont

It's too bad the left couldn't just be reasonable about Zimmerman's obvious faults, they had to deify the kid, and airbrush him, and have Obama be his daddy yada yada yada. The whole thing had to come down to a clean cut black kid out for some skittles is gunned down by a white racist OR a caring neighborhood watch defender was set upon by a ruthless thug and got what he deserved. The facts are a scroungy looking kid, with banger-i-ness traits was tailed by a douchy cop wannabe who had no greater defense than pulling out a gun. No hand to hand, no baton, no taser, nope just his wobbling gun. I am in favor one kind of gun control, those with guns know how to use them, and not go around like a BMOC because they've got their gun in their pocket. In short, would Zimmerman have done exactly what he did without the gun on him? Probably not in a million years.

      1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

If I were writing a history of the Zimmerman/Martin incident, I'd suggest based on his lifetime pattern of behavior in other cases that you're almost certainly right.

That doesn't mean the jury was *wrong* to acquit him, since they didn't and couldn't have access to evidence about his future behavior.

      2. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

"It's too bad the left couldn't just be reasonable"

OK, pardon me for cutting that sentence short, but really?

Even assuming Z's guilt, that didn't justify making this hispanic, part-black neighborhood watchman into an agent of the murderous honky conspiracy.

Are we going to have to listen to yokels get butthurt in every single thread from now on?

Yes, it's the price of living in a free society and hanging out at a blog where they allow practically anyone, no matter how irritating or lacking in sentience to comment.

  42. Almanian's Rusty Woodchipper   10 years ago

Just what I'd expect to hear from a Cosmoyokelite!

  43. Free Society   10 years ago

I find both terms to be genuinely annoying. I hear a lot more "yokel" get tossed out as an insult. Most of the time I see the word "cosmo" being used, it's Warty calling himself that while he's doing one of his ALL CAPS impersonations of anyone who's on the other side of the debate as he is.

  50. Sevens   10 years ago

Wonder if "yokel" "officially" (who the hell determines that anyway, is it "the left"?) is hate speech yet. What with women treated as "discrete and insular minority", the hillbilly population would match.

  51. MSimon   10 years ago

    Lacking in sentence too.

  52. Free Society   10 years ago

    there he is. heyoooo

  53. Acosmist   10 years ago
