Yeah, it's Soave.
Hello.
"Bernie Sanders is leading TIME magazine's Person of the Year poll."
Garth wins!
WE'RE NOT WORTHY.
Yeah, I threw up in my mouth a little when I read that about Sanders. My only hope is that the idiots are stuffing the ballot box, as it were.
Ahem.
TIME MAGAZINE
Yeah, I know, right?
SHOCKER!
TIME has named many fine individuals as "MAN PERSON OF THE YEAR" since 1938.
If you don't assume "person of the year" means necessarily a good person, then Hitler and Sanders both kind of make sense. Hitler was certainly among the most influential people in 1938. And one could argue that Sanders's candidacy is remarkable enough to warrant it, whether one agrees with him or not.
Trump has been more remarkable than Benito.
Yeah, that's probably true. I didn't say Time necessarily thinks of it in the way I suggested.
As a former winner myself (2006), I'm disappointed that their standards have fallen so precipitously.
Damn your fast android hands
I thought we were tied ?
Meh, I won Person of the Year in 2006.
OH NO YOU DIDN'T JUST
Scared Americans love Donald Trump.
Scared of being losers!

I don't think Lucas was trying to make the point, but I saw that as part of the imbalance in the force. The ways of the Jedi became as self-destructive as the Sith.
No, Lukas really believes that collectivist shit.
Lukas's is nostalgic to live in Sparta?
At least the Sith are restrained by the Rule of Two. Oh, if we could only extend the Rule of Two to politics.
Are those general beliefs that apply to everyone, or just to Jedi knights? If the odd rules just apply to the warrior priest Jedi people, it doesn't seem so bad.
I have no idea if that's the right way to look at it. I only saw one of the new movies and don't really care.

Good is dumb.
It wasn't dumb when they knew they were making a campy space opera. It became dumb when it grew the mythology and started taking it too seriously.
The first three movies had professional script writers who knew how to spin a yarn. The last three were a humongous vanity project.
Yeah, that. It was a good adventure story. Maybe not a great fantasy/sci-fi universe.
Bernie Sanders is leading TIME magazine's Person of the Year poll.
It must not have been an eventful year.
I thought TIME's Person of the Year was their one remaining subscriber.
I was TIME Person of the Year in 2006.
I have a hard time believing they still have a subscriber.
Thank god it's not the Time swimsuit issue
Just wait.
That one will have a picture of Hillary Clinton in a string bikini on the cover.
They're trying to win back Crusty's subscription?
More likely trying to set a record for inducing hysterical blindness.
He's the only guy with followers who read TIME. So... People who spend a lot of time in waiting rooms.
And if Sanders is elected even more people will be spending time in waiting rooms...I begin to see their genius.
People who spend a lot of time in waiting rooms.
What are, the unemployable?
They all want MMJ brownies.

Goddamn it...
Any reason I can think of to give Sanders that title -- like breaking a political mold -- I hate to say it, but Trump deserves it more so.
However, if this was actually a WORLD impact award and not just Murika, then I think it would have to be Merkel.
For world impact, they'd have to give it to "YOU" every year. No individual even holds a candle.
Or Aung San Suu Kyi.
That would actually make good use of it, instead of just being geriatric clickbait.
Or Phuk Dat Bich.
Liberals won't meet deadline to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by year's end

Zoolander is learning on the job.
This morning on a radio show a former conservative immigration minister was explaining the logistics behind what Trudeau was pushing was too great to meet by the end of December. The leftists on the panel went nuts - and with the usual smugness. He was right.
I'm not sure why the Liberals wanted them in by the end of December - a Holiday month to boot.
Can planes even land on Canadian runways in December? Can boats get through the ice to the Canadian shore?
"Zoolander is learning on the job."
Didn't work out so well for us and that guy Obama.

"National Review reporter Katherine Timpf received death threats for saying Star Wars is dumb on Fox News."

If only Larry David had known all it takes is to weakly challenge Hillary!
I'm surprised it's not the Belgian behind the Paris attacks.
Was he sexy like the Boston kid?
Maybe if he'd had the foresight to do it earlier in the year.
I wouldn't go as far as saying Star Wars is "dumb," but I really don't get all the hype surrounding those movies. I mean, they're solid sci-fi films, but people go nuts for them.
Die, infidel scum!
/kidding
My understanding is if you're an old nerd it was the only game in town. Some parent also passed on their obsession to the next generation, but other than that, I don't get it either.
Speaking for myself, I loved Star Wars as a kid. But Return of the Jedi gave that love smoke inhalation. Then the remastered Star Wars tried to smother that love with a pillow. Finally the Phantom Menace showed up. It was wielding a garrote, and the love did not survive. It has been dead for 20 years, and not even Jesus riding a triceratops can resurrect it.
I'm rewatching RotJ tonight to test the Luke-as-Sith hypothesis. Then the fanfic trilogy for the Darth Jarjar hypothesis. And also because its a good way to punish my wife for making me watch reality tv.
There is nothing that could convince me to subject myself to The Phantom Menace again.
You can plainly see Natalie Portman's nipples in her white outfit as they enter the arena to fight those flying bug things.
Wait, that's the second one.
Or you could watch that scene in Black Swan.
If you have the time, watch Red Letter Media's review of the Phantom Menace. It's really good. They start off with the proposition, 'nothing in this movie makes any sense'. They fully justify that.
"The Darth Jarjar Hypothesis": This sounds like a Big Bang Theory episode title. Note to the writers: build a script around this title, stat!
I've always liked Return of the Jedi. But it was one of the first movies I ever saw, so that probably biases me a bit.
It was the first movie I went to see by myself and yeah I collected the trading cards.... But the first two are way better.
Trek was around fifteen years before Wars.
True. But Trek died in the late 1960s. And the first Star Wars movie came out two years before ST: TMP
I'm a fan of Star Wars, but sci-fi not it is. More like a "space opera".
Fantasy, or what fans of the genre call "science fantasy" which in turn annoys the fuck out of serious, old-school fans of hard scifi.
I once got an explanation of this from a guy who was in his 20s when the first one came out, and saw it at the Ziegfield in NYC through clouds of pot smoke. He said the film defined a break in generations, that he and his friends recognised this as something new that belonged to them and their generation. So maybe that's part of it.
Shorter that guy: "Derp"
Because lightsabers are all like bveew, shink, shink, and the TIE fighters go pew pew pew pew. What's not to love?
BWEEEE-OOOOP!
What?
I think the ret-conning of the Midichlorians moved it from fantasy to sci-fi. Turns out Luke just had a pass because Obi Wan knew he was genetically probable.
They are not sci fi, they fantasy with spaceships and laser guns.

KATHY SHOT FIRST!
Man, if Dawkins is a Clock Boy Troofer then it must be true.
Mustn't it?
I just spent 45 minutes argueing that it was a perpetrated hoax.
Liberals are going after Richard Dawkins for his aggressive insistence that "clock boy" Ahmed Muhamed perpetrated a hoax.
That one sentence has shaken my whole foundation on which my faith was based.
Did you just do something there?
Observe it you did.
Hugh,
You picked the wrong hill to die on. /Troofer
I always say, if you don't get a couple of Internet death threats each day, you're doing something wrong.
I've had one in the last 5 minutes. Carry on.
Stop microaggressing me with your death threat privilege!
Dawkins is right, Robbo. I bet he didn't write a stupid fucking article stating the hoaxers need an apology.
No alt-text? Next you're going to shave your head, right?
Criticism of Robby or the content of his articles is NOT OKAY, man.
Liberals are going after Richard Dawkins for his aggressive insistence that "clock boy" Ahmed Muhamed perpetrated a hoax.
Dawkins may be a prig, but I'm glad he's not going all knee-jerk on this.
And I shouldn't have to sit staring at total fucking cunts on the regular, but I do. Suck it.

No keyboard is safe around this crowd.
It's German insignia, isn't it? They didn't plaster swastikas all over.
You could also try reading a book so as to avert your eyes, you savage.
I mean, I wasn't there, so I didn't see the whole campaign, but the photo at the link was of an American flag with an eagle instead of stars in the upper left.
"I shouldn't have to sit staring at a Nazi insignia on my way to work"
So look at your phone, like everyone else on the fucking train.
To be fair, since they don't work in the NYC subway for shit, I don't blame her. Is everyone else just playing mobile games? F that.
I'm reading on mine.
She is free to purchase that ad space and put whatever she wants up. She is also free to use another form of transportation. Or look at something other than the ads.
You know who should really be pissed? People taking the DC trains that have to read ads that their taxes pay for to advertise the State Dept. or the fucking FBI. Or "See Something-Say Something". People on the NY trains ought to be happy those ads are subsidizing their fucking fares.
Are you really surprised that something like this didn't go down well in a city known for it's bustling Jewish population? Whether it's an overreaction or not is one thing but I'm always puzzled that you all seem to be genuinely blindsided by stuff like this.
"you all" Um...no. Not all of us. I regularly point out her that from 1850-1950 that NYC had a larger population of Jews than the entire so-called Holy Land (historical Palestine, Judea, whatever).
Also, rights is rights, Susan. Nobody expressed surprise about the demographics; (many) people here do expect US citizens to cherish the First Amendment - even religious sorts when that FA is used in ways they don't like.
Actually, a few years back Indians in the diamond district in NYC put up swastikas in their shops. The Jews in the area just shrugged, said, "It's Hindus putting up swastikas, no biggie."

This campaign is using imagery meant to evoke Nazi iconography and apparently without context in some places ( the symbols are plastered over seats without much indication that is advertising for a TV series). Amazon's marketing is either stupidly tasteless or deliberately trying to stir up a controversy to get free advertising.

I've been seeing a few articles and comments from progs about how Man in the High Castle is more about our current "social injustice struggle" of today. I guess it's true that you can confirm your bias with anything as long as you have enough double plus good think.
OMG, they are totally, and I mean totally, misinterpreting this. It's totally about blind adherence to the state vs liberty. There was an episode, at the SS officer's breakfast table, where he explicitly said that individualism was bad. TMITHC is the first wave of media pushback against collectivism. Hope it's not too late.
I'm not holding my breath but it would make my day if they included a scene with the Gestapo breaking into a home to arrest some guy for some trivial, nonviolent transgression against the state and they toss a flash-bang into baby's crib
Yeah, like one person complained and Kulturkampf took it from there.
I suspect provoking such a reaction for the free media coverage was the part of the point of the campaign for Amazon's marketing mad men.

I bet that sounded profound to him at the time.
The Eagles of Death Metal has been my 7-year-old-son's favorite band for about six months. I had the kid on my shoulders at one of their shows when Jesse Hughes called the kid out and asked him if he wanted to hear some more rock. Fast-forward a couple of months and he sees the band on the news in the midst of a massacre.

Ex-Congressman Tom Campbell: Big Brother Should Leave Little Sisters Alone
"The law on which the Little Sisters rely has a very bipartisan, even liberal provenance. In 1993, then-congressman, now Sen. Charles Schumer introduced the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. His bill gathered 170 co-sponsors, passed the House on a voice vote, passed the Senate 97-3 and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton....
"RFRA passed with such an overwhelming majority because it expresses a very healthy view of government: "Leave us alone, unless you have a very good reason, and then bother us minimally." It's not a bad instruction for laws in general, not just those that touch on religious practices....

I am not going to answer your question unless you have joined The Brotherhood of Steel.
That or the Minutemen.
I'm pretty much halfway though all the factions, basically 1 step before i have to pick one to build the gizmo to go to the institute. I've stopped all the progress w/ them to go do other stuff and avoid the endgame
You are farther along than I am. =)
No, my next one is the Witcher.
Sucks. Removed it today in fact. It's got next to nothing of what made Fallout 3 seem so appealing, the story and character make no sense and the game play is less shooter and more hobo simulator. About the only positive I can personally draw from it is that it's my brand new "biggest waste of money" ever - and I though nothing would beat that pair of parachute pants I bought.
SusanM I think you would really like DayZ

I tried that a while ago. My PC couldn't really handle Arma ii though. If I decide to dump XBone for a Steam machine I'd be back on it in a heartbeat.
Honestly I am Debating on getting a Steam Machine, or a better Laptop.
It looks like a good idea. I'm going for a Mac laptop when my PC craps out so it may be an idea to keep gaming.
Huh. Mine runs Arma 2 fine, but I thought that you needed 8GB of Ram and at least a Core i3 to run F4?
Meh, not like I need another timesink right now.
Is it more like F3 or New Vegas?
It's kind of an open-world survival game online. Roguelike in a way, I guess.
" the game play is less shooter and more hobo simulator"
True. Though i don't really see how its any worse than Fallout 3, which wasn't any different from the "shoot and scoot" perspective.
That line was inspired by the fact that any outing would leave me over-packed with junk but few really usable items - although the two armor suits I wouldn't call unusable. But ammo and medkits? Nothing doing. I can build the Taj Fricken Mahal at level 10 but couldn't last more than 1 or 2 firefights. Maybe it's me and having cut my teeth on "pick up everygorramthing you can because something *might* be useful" adventure games but the item balance just seems off to me.
" any outing would leave me over-packed with junk but few really usable items - although the two armor suits I wouldn't call unusable. But ammo and medkits? Nothing doing. I can build the Taj Fricken Mahal at level 10 but couldn't last more than 1 or 2 firefights. "
Huh. That wasn't my experience at all. Maybe i'm more used to the fact that the 'early stages' of the game mean you have to pick your fights carefully.
In my case, i wasn't hunter-gathering in the early bits at all, and focused entirely on leveling up my asskicking abilities. By level 15-20 i was a death machine, and my main complaint is that nothing has been a real threat since then.
re: Junk - once i got into the 'settlement building and crafting' bits (around level 20), everything i touched was 'usable'. Just grab everything then dump it in the workshop, and after 2-3 outings you had enough to craft whatever you needed for that development (e.g. power, defense items)
My complaint about the building stuff was more, "what is the purpose of all this"? why am i helping random people build farms, again? Why do i not sell them to bands of slavers? After i got 5 or so settlements into the 'thriving' stages, i began to wonder why i wasn't getting paid for being the Wasteland City Planner. I get the impression it serves some purpose in the endgame, but the fact i've put so much time in without any real payoff is a little annoying.
Well, in my little corner of the Fallout Metaverse, the peasants are S.O.L. because there's no way I'm finishing the game. It's irritating rather than difficult so I resigned my post as Post-Apocalyptic handyman. Hope you do better 🙂
Very much so
To Gilmore, not Susan
WHY YOU NO LIKE SUSAN ????!!!!!
Just messing with you. =)
OOOHHH! Christmas goose early this year, eh?
Yeah, I'm like 70+ hours in or something. Level 55. which is one area of complaint/difference from FO3/FONV - you seem to level up every couple of quests.
Overall my reaction is v/ favorable with a few gripes. The fact that 'radiant' quests go on forever unless you purposely stop them/ignore them And its hard to tell what faction quests are 'essential' and which are just more 'go here and kill X enemies for no reason' wash/rinse/repeat items.
The other is that despite being 2/3 through the game, and 80% through the main questline, the settlement-management thing seems to serve no apparent purpose. Should i care if they survive? Why did i waste hours building them up and gathering all these resources? do i get rich like a motherfucker off my Mutfruit plantations? can i enslave these people and become settler-pimp of the wasteland? I noticed that there's a BoS set of missions that would have me plundering the farms with them.... which makes me wonder why i *don't*? Should i care if the settlers are successful? I know they're part of the minuteman questline, but the fact i've gotten no payoff at all from them yet makes me wonder if it ever comes.
that said, the environment is great, the customization is better, and some of the characters are awesome (though they're few and far between). Favorite LOL moments so far have been the Silver Shroud questline, and the USS Constitution (aka REPCONN redux) thing.
With the right perk you can get your settlements producing stuff for you and sending it to a base where you can use the items to build stuff. At least that's what I gather from other people's comments.
Oh, I'm way past that.
(hold on while i get a screenshot of my GILMORE'S PIMP-PALACE)

And no Wasteland Bachelor Pad is truly complete without a Disco-Ballroom/Indoor-Basketball court.....and a breakfast-table with a million-dollar view.
I'm just pissed they wont let me put Deathclaw Heads in my trophy room.
Speaking of:
I vote that Gilmore has to add this as a title to his Reason tag.
Because, like, it's TIME magazine, man!

OMG !!!!
SYNET is NOW !!!!
Has anyone actually watched it? I liked the book, but the previews for the show make it look like it was turned in another "plucky ragtag band of rebels overthrow repressive governement" show, which completely misses the point of the book.
I watched most of the pilot, which was good. then i got distracted. I think i wanted to hold off until there were more episodes.
Is it available via some means other than subscription? Like, can I just pay a couple bucks for each ep?
dunno, i just ganked a copy off Pbay
Was the point of the book that a plucky ragtag band of rebels don't overthrow the repressive government?
In a way. Part of what was so horrifying about the book is how little difference the fact the Axis Powers had won made to most people's day to day lives.
One of the big themes was exploring how weird the concept of "historicity" is. If I have a cigarette lighter I claim was owned by FDR that is either objectively true or objectively not true. But there's no way to determine which is the case. One weird expansion of that theme was that once you got outside the major cities, most people had no real evidence that the Axis Power HAD indeed won, other than everyone told them they had.
Huh, this sounds interesting and nuanced.
I had an idea to write a novel along these lines, but that requires ambition and talent.
As I said, I liked the book and was disappointed it looks like the TV show is just "Red Dawn:WWII Edition".
There's a reason Colorado is in the neutral zone in The Man in the High Castle. Neither the Japanese nor the Germans want to mess with the Wolverines.
Watch more episodes. On the one hand, much more of the book is explored, and it is clear that the "plucky ragtag band of rebels" does NOT overthrow the repressive government, at least not immediately, in spectacular Hollywood fashion. On the other hand, the whole season of ten episodes, seems, in my opinion, to be merely a superb overture to a much grander story. I want MORE.

Dawkins' main mistake seems to be in thinking that the kid came up with this hoax. It was clearly his parents, when you see how they reacted.
When interviewed on comedy central, the kid said he also "makes CPUs" though. That's good enough evidence for me that it was a hoax. He might have made a clock. He sure as hell doesn't make CPUs.
I resent NEcSS for making Dawkins sympathetic. The guy has made numerous ill-considered statements in the past that attracted a lot of publicity, but NEcSS invited him anyway. To now bounce him from a contractual agreement for re-tweeting a satirical cartoon in the raw style of Charlie Hebdo seems disingenuous, no?
Steve Novella, president of NEcSS, just posted a defense of the decision to dis-invite Dawkins that is long-winded, tiresome, and unsatisfying to those of the adult persuasion.
If we get real about this, the reason for inviting celebrities like Dawkins is that they are a big draw to the conference. Offending feminists jeopardizes attendance, profits, and membership.
On the other hand, NEcSS undoubtedly noticed the recent merger of CFI with the Richard Dawkins Foundation, which installs Dawkins' associate as CEO. Booting Dawkins from the conference has to be taken as a message to CFI.
