Smith College Students Say Journalists Must Swear Vow of Loyalty to Their Cause
'By taking a neutral stance, journalists and media are being complacent in our fight.'

Student activists at Smith College are barring journalists from covering their activities unless said journalists first pledge their loyalty to said activists' cause. These irascible protesters believe the Mizzou protesters did not go far enough, apparently.
An event that draws so many people, especially one that concerns a topic of magnitude such as civil rights, is customarily covered by media outlets. But reporters who arrived at the sit-in were met with a clear message: Keep out.
Alyssa Mata-Flores, a 21-year-old Smith College senior and one of the sit-in's organizers, explained that the rule was born from "the way that media has historically painted radical black movements as violent and aggressive."
"We are asking that any journalists or press that cover our story participate and articulate their solidarity with black students and students of color," she told MassLive in the Student Center Wednesday. "By taking a neutral stance, journalists and media are being complacent in our fight."
Smith organizers said journalists were welcome to cover the event if they agreed to explicitly state they supported the movement in their articles.
Keep in mind that this event took place inside the Smith Student Center—a space where the expectation of privacy has to be quite small. And in any case, the students were not holding an event they deemed closed to reporters; they were holding an event closed to reporters who maintain even a shred of objectivity.
Perhaps more disturbing—the Smith College administration saw nothing wrong with this censorious arrangement:
Stacey Schmeidel, Smith College director of media relations, said the college supports the activists' ban on media.
"It's a student event, and we respect their right to do that, although it poses problems for the traditional media," Shmeidel said.
Schmeidel went on to say that the college reserves the right to remove reporters from the Student Center because it's a private campus.
That's true. And yet, as The Washington Post's Callum Borchers points out, Smith's handbook stipulates that "legitimate exchanges of dialogue must proceed without obstruction or coercion from any quarter." Under that rule, certainly a reporter must have the right to cover an event of significant national interest in the Student Center.
Smith's administrators seems to be giving student-protesters the impression that forcing journalists to swear loyalty oaths is a perfectly legitimate way of conducting business. They deserve heaps of criticism for that, as do the students.

I think Smith is hoping to minimalize the media coverage so that their Alumni don't pull donations. They already know they can't stop the students from being crazy, but they can stop the bad press by refusing to let people cover it.

Why are these people in college?
Seriously, why are they in college? This is the sort of shit I'd outgrown by the time I got to high school. They don't belong in college. They lack the emotional maturity.
Period. Full stop.
Why are these people in college?
Its the best place to be for raping?
What, you expect them to work?
I don't expect them to do much of anything. But they sure as hell don't belong in college.
Let them smoke joints in their parents basement for the next four years, for all I care. Just stop wasting everyone's time and resources. And I include the administrators in that. Especially the administrators.
No Mr. Bluster, I expect them..... to die.
Why are they in college?
well, everyone knows you're not cool unless you go to college, and mom and dad are paying for it anyway, so why not?
YAY! 4+ years of summer camp funtime!
If they don't graduate from college they don't get to put that bit at the end of their resume indicating educational attainment, thus making themselves employable for something better than Micky-D's.
Colleges are credential mills. Pay your 100K, pass your class with marginal learning, get your degree, get a job. An education can be had for next to zero dollars on the interwebz, through real experience, or at the library. They're only marginally interested in education but are passionate about their credential.
That's a good reason for them to want to be in college. It isn't a good reason for them to be in college.
There are a shitload of other kids who'd be just as delighted to get that credential. And they'd take their studies a hell of a lot more seriously. I also suspect they'd have the intelligence to see through this sort of nonsense.
If the administrators had any good sense they'd be kicking tons of people out right now and taking more of those other qualified students who actually want to study and work hard. I'm sure Smith rejects thousands of highly qualified applicants every year. Apparently they don't have any sense .
And the Mizzou football players should have had their scholarships yanked the minute they boycotted pratice or a game.
There are tons of guys out their who may not be the football player they are but would actually play their hearts out AND actually study, take their own tests, and get an education and appreciate the opportunity. Ever one of these Mizzou fools probably think they are NFL material and are doing the college a favor by playing there. I have been in that atmosphere and I know it to be true.
Jerk their athelete's privledge.
thus making themselves employable for something better than Micky-D's.
Which possibly explains why they want Micky-Dee to be forced to pay $15/hr
However, their interpersonal skills would probably get them fired out of the Golden Arches faster than you can say "Do you want fries with that?"
Alliumphobe!
They are in college because college administrators refuse to stand up to them. The Mizzou president resigned and the Princeton president agreed to more discussions.
What we really need is for them to say is "Get off of my lawn!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvkk_Tce0Kc
I think you're spot on about the administrations toadying up to this small group of micro-sensitive nitwits. Actually, the majority of students at Smith are appalled at how the current president Kathleen McCartney indulges these brats. It's a small group of people ruining Smith College. This has been going on for about 6 years. I told my brother that he needs to make sure my nieces go to engineering schools where this kind of foolishness doesn't occur with any regularity. Here in NC, Duke and UNC have been having BLM protests, the engineering college NC State has not. Thank goodness my son is at an engineering school.
"Why are these people in college?"
Because they want to purchase a minor title of nobility and feed off the public weal?
They did not come across as a bunch of Engineering and Business students, so yea, this is exactly what they are in college for. To make their bones as amateur victims and move up into the pro ranks of academia.
These kids are free to express their wishes. However, no one else is obliged to listen or comply.
These geniuses will no doubt be shocked when news accounts posted solely by journalists who have "articulated their solidarity with the movement" are dismissed as propaganda.
Under the latest Ronald Bailey Cosmotarian Style Guide (RBCSG), the term "propaganda" has been replaced with "truth" or "fact."
It's like a combination of Romper Room and Hitler Youth.
I thought Hitler banned retards from his Hitler Youth.
Good point.
Whereas at Smith they ban everyone but retards.
Made me snort water at that comment. I'm stealing it.
How about we not cover your movement at all?
WTF is going on?
don't these precious little snowflakes even stop for one minute to think before spouting this crazy shit?
R.I.P. logic and facts
13 years of indoctrination in public schools destroys any shred of individual responsibility or integrity.
Bah... it's more than that. Most of us probably had 13 years of indoctrination in public schools.
"Bah" needs to be used more in these discussions. 3 letters, yet it says so much. I also love "yikes" too.
ZOINKS!

Call the press Bat Boy. They'll expose that SJWmanperson for the evil his kind represent. That will distract him while I plug in the Batmobile and get ze charged up.
Jinkies!
Yeah, you can't just blame it on public schools, despite their many failings. For one thing, at a school like Smith, many of these people went to private schools. Which are often even more batshit insane leftist than public schools. I would go so far as to speculate that the majority of public school graduates find this all to be idiotic and childish.
I think the real problem is that these students never knew hardship. Their parents taught them nothing about the real world, they got an allowance without having to work for it as a child, they didn't have to work at some shitty retail job when they turned 16, they just got a car for being 16 and didn't have to think about insurance or cell phone payments. They probably still don't even while their college is being payed for.
I get that parents want to give their snowflakes all the best, but they really need to be able to see the struggles parents go through and what it means to have to work for money for them to figure out what happens in the real world, which these students won't realize for several years, yet.
Keep in mind it's only a small minority of students who are spouting this bullshit.
Somewhere in Berlin 1933 a Jew is thinking the exact same thing.
Art students at that.
"Stacey Schmeidel, Smith College director of media relations, said the college supports the activists' ban on media.
"It's a student event, and we respect their right to do that, although it poses problems for the traditional media," Shmeidel said."
I think the reality that's poking its way through the narrative here is that these students dont REALLY have any "Real World Goals" that they're trying to achieve through their 'activism'.
i.e. they're not trying to change the status quo, or advance any particular new policy. they don't actually want to change anyone's mind about anything.
In this sense, its not a "Protest" at all. That's not what its about.
The reason they're comfortable with the idea of "banning media coverage" is because the real goal, and the real rewards, are completely interpersonal and social
Its about self-celebration - helping them reinforce their views about themselves, and create socially-bonding experiences, helping to define their little social-group in the campus environment and create boundaries between themselves and the theoretical 'others' who they agitate against (yet have no actual interest talking directly to/with)
Its not about the "issue" at all. Its about THEMSELVES. "Yay = Us! Grrrr = Them!!"
Maybe. But (and I've made this point before so sorry for the repetition) a lot of these activists want to create this kind of environment in the "real world." This is why the argument "wait until people who think this way graduate - they'll learn real quick about the real world" is not totally helpful. They believe the real world is oppressive, full of micro-aggressions, and fundamentally racist. It is up to them, and like-minded activists, to change the real world because it has been constructed in an evil way by generations of patriarchal, racists oppressors.
"a lot of these activists want to create this kind of environment in the "real world."
This is why the argument "wait until people who think this way graduate - they'll learn real quick about the real world" is not totally helpful."
I actually take the latter view, and don't see why its mistaken.
Because - while i don't doubt your claim about their *intents* re: "The Real World" - they have so little experience with or understanding of "The Real World" that their college-campus-attitudes and behaviors will prove utterly useless and un-compelling in any other environment.
prove utterly useless and un-compelling in any other environment.
Provided those other environments remain completely unaffected by this kind of thinking. But what happens when, say, Smith College grads sit on state and federal courts? And other Smith College grads sue their places of work for "systematic micro-aggressions"? I'm not saying this is going to happen tomorrow but how many people in 1960 would have believed the Supreme Court would fabricate law in order to create a national health case system?
These types of students are true believers who see their opponents as obstacles to be removed by any means necessary in order to create a just world.
But what happens when, say, Smith College grads sit on state and federal courts? And other Smith College grads sue their places of work for "systematic micro-aggressions"?
The system will break. And the people who take over won't really give two shits about "micro-agressions". They'll be too busy dishing out real aggressions. And those kind of guys understand they need the engineers and farmers on their side a hell of a lot more than they need the Jr. Asst. VPs of Human Resources or the Deputy Assistant Provosts for Student Affairs. They'll conclude pretty quickly that these sorts are just useless bellies to fill.
"And those kind of guys..."
Those kind of guys also tend to be the Jr. Asst. VPs of Human Resources or the Deputy Assistant Provosts for Student Affairs who manage to build up the motivation and patience to actually attempt to actualize the stupid thoughts wandering around their pretty little brains.
Do you know who else wanted to be an artist until he realized he wasn't all that good at it?
Obama?
Those kind of guys also tend to be the Jr. Asst. VPs of Human Resources or the Deputy Assistant Provosts for Student Affairs...
Perhaps. But, they usually make sure their compatriots are the first ones lined up against a wall and shot.
Bush II ?
I'm a Smith Alum, Class of 1984, and a liberal Democrat. I disagree. I've been attacked mercilessly this weekend by a small group of assholes who graduate in 2014, predominately gay, people of color who have no desire to work with anyone. They are all in graduate school or education and can't cooperate enough to actually become a lawyer. They won't take corporate jobs, they'll just continue to pollute liberal arts colleges.
Most current students and alumnae are horrified this very small group of overly-sensitive, whiny brats have destroy what was once a great college. Some of the stuff I experienced and was told over the weekend caused me to tell my nieces and my sister-in-law not to pay to send them to a liberal arts college.
Here in NC, there are BLM protests at UNC and Duke. NC State, the engineering and ag school has none.
I've been reading the crap on the BLM website and I'm horrified. These racists don't want cooperation, they want to remake the world to fit a queer, black female view. It's actually pretty horrifying stuff.
Yeah i agree with you here Gil, i'd love to see some of these kids try walking into their boss's offices and refusing to leave until he (or she, of course) meets their demands
"so you want a black culture lunch room, race quotas for office managers, and 50% raises? you're all fired"
Followed by a federal civil rights' law suit, heard in the presence of people who graduated from Harvard Law. Followed by massive fines against the company in question and legally mandated black culture lunch rooms. Said rooms will then become required at all companies.
will prove utterly useless and un-compelling in any other environment.
I think you're underestimating just how partisan and narcissistic these people really are. Their worldview is entirely self-focused, and what's more, they're willing to employ mob tactics to get what they want. They might be unemployable in the real world, but that will simply serve to reinforce their solipisism--"The white male corporate world won't give me a $70K a year entry level job because it's white, male, and corporate!" And the ones who do get hired will end up being HR nightmares that will coordinate shaming events on social media if they don't get their way. Or worse, getting jobs in government, where they can exploit the power of the state to take out their delusions of persecution on people who they've identified as enemies.
They're committing autophagy on their liberal professors and administrators right now, but eventually they'll graduate and start infiltrating areas where they will have real authority and a real ability to make everyone else's lives miserable for not falling in lockstep. This is one of those areas where they're already signaling a desire to violate the NAP, and a libertarian live-and-let-live attitude won't apply.
The best solution is to get right back in their face, and when they indicate a desire for violence to put you in line, beat them to the punch.
I recently posted about my 180 degree turn from being vaguely in support of Black Lives Matters to being completely opposed. I agree with you. I'm a Smith alum and I've been hearing reports about how these little monsters have ruined Smith (and other colleges) by holding the administration hostage by calling everyone racist who doesn't agree with them.
My experiences with the Smith College Alumnae Facebook page and discussions with a SMALL handful of these brats and their desire to establish "safe spaces from white people" in all colleges and eventually all companies and public spaces (Yes, someone actually told me that) will happen.
While I was firing back insults and laughing at their complete lack of facts to support their allegations of rampant institutional racism, I received numerous IMs from other alumnae telling me they regretted selecting Smith because of these hateful, racists.
I'm confident enough in my liberal credentials to confront these whiny little brats for what they are. Racists who want to dismantle the 1st Amendment.
Please don't blame all Smith Students and recent graduates. Most are just as horrified and have no skills in dealing with insane people. Perhaps the most disturbing is the animosity directed at the very few Republican students at Smith.
Yes, I had a conversation with a woman who told me that it's ok for black folks to insult and degrade white people but when a white person (myself) tells a black person they're an idiot for wanting to dismantle the 1st Amendment and developing a network of "safe spaces from white people" in all companies and public spaces. The Black Lies web site maintains that only queer black women can dismantle the patriarchal, white male society.
I actually believe this group could set back the real advances blacks and whites have made in understanding each other if allowed legitimacy. Their main way of attempting to control the conversation is to attack, belittle, refuse to acknowledge similarities in positions and basically bully in a hateful manner and refuse to provide any real proof of their allegations.
I told the little shits there's no way, this 53-year old liberal Democrat is going to tolerate this nonsense. And I find it funny this racists have the nerve to attempt to silence me by calling me a racist.
the college supports the activists' ban on media
I bet they do. The less coverage these nutters get, the better for the college.
Heh. Good point. Don't want too many parents seeing this on the news and asking "I'm paying how much for this shit?".
I think this is probably pretty accurate. It's part of what they want out of the college experience. The same attitude was there when I was in college, but less completely fucking insane. Lots of people were wishing it was the 60s or something so they could occupy an administrative building or something like that.
Haha, I remember my colleges Occupy rally. I think five people showed up in total. And three of them were security guards required to 'keep order.' I guess we weren't quite like that. Then again my college was half Asian, and Asians generally don't waste time on that kind of bullshit.
Half Aisian ?
Lacist !
"the way that media has historically painted radical black movements as violent and aggressive."
"so swear your loyalty to us or get the fuck out!"
I don't know what's happening at Smith, but what happened at Dartmouth the other day was certainly aggressive and probably violent from what I've seen about it.
NEEDS MOAR SCARE QUOTES AROUND "TRADITIONAL"!
Because we all know the media's in bed with the man!
Ostentatious self-flagellation is hep, man.
They don't have a message. They aren't trying to communicate. They are just throwing a tantrum and trying to intimidate.
The press doesn't have a role in any of that.
The good thing, I guess, is that this keeps happening and it's raising awareness in more mainstream reporting.
We are asking that any journalists or press that cover our story participate and articulate their solidarity with black students and students of color Mrs Clinton's campaign platform, said Clinton spokeswoman Mata Flores.
You must eat the loyalty oats!
I can't wait for these dumbshits to read Sophia Smith's will.
Excerpted: Article 3: Sensible of what the Christian Religion has done for my sex, and believing that all education should be for the glory of God, and the good of man, I direct that the Holy Scriptures be daily and systematically read and studied in said College, and without giving preference to any sect or denomination, all the education and all the discipline shall be pervaded by the Spirit of Evangelical Christian Religion. I direct, also, that higher culture in the English Language and Literature be given in said College; also, in Ancient and Modern Languages, in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences, in the Useful and the Fine Arts, in Intellectual, Moral and Aesthetic Philosophy, in Natural Theology, in the Evidences of Christianity, in Gymnastics and Physical Culture, in the Sciences and Arts, which pertain to Education, Society, and Government, and in such other studies as coming times may develop or demand for the education of women and the progress of the race.
What race?
And why does she hate Jews and Mislims and Hindus and atheists so much that she would want to indoctrinate them with Christian theology?
Perhaps they ought to take her name off of every building, remove every statue and rename the college of which she is named due to her discrimination against different religions and her mentioning of "the race" without specifying that it was inclusive of all races, colors, creeds, national origins, sexual identities or preferences.
They should stage a 'sit in' at the president's office to demand that Smith's name be expunged from the legacy of their university.
Time to take Smith's name off of the university.
"By taking a neutral stance, journalists and media are being complacent in our fight."
Presumably, student activists at Smith College are being complacent in any fight in which they take a neutral stance.
It must be a hard life to be so fucking involved.
I'm about a cunt hair away from changing my view and supporting conscription for every single person between 18 and 20 and forcing them to do manual labor that could be done by heavy machinery or have them sent into prisons to work as mediators or even send them to third world countries to help the poor and downtrodden build villages and bridges and shit.
Kids today are soft as baby shit. They need a dose of reality to get them off of their idiotic crusades. Conscription would do it pretty well.
I'd settle for raising the voting age to 30 and making property ownership a requirement again.
I'd be willing to remove the age restriction in return for property ownership...
Was that sarcasm? That would be unconstitutional...did I get trolled? I'm leaving now.
Well, obviously you'd need to change the constitution first.
You don't like a certain group's political bent, so you want to take away their right to vote? Disgusting.
The reasoning behind the property requirement in the 18th century was that propertyless people were viewed as drifters, not having any skin in the game, and not willing to commit to a community. In an agricultural society that may have made some sense, but in an urbanized society, no way.
You don't like a certain group's political bent, so you want to take away their right to vote? Disgusting.
Gee, somehow this country managed to become the most powerful in the world during a period where 18-20 year olds, despite being nominal adults, weren't allowed to vote. The Boomers got that changed, and look how fucked up things are now. Since leftists are now arguing that adolescence should be extended into the mid-20s, then they're clearly arguing that people in that age group aren't adults; therefore, the voting age should be raised until they reach the age of maturity.
However, I'm more down with sloopy's idea--stick these brats in a CCC-style camp, living in tents and tarpaper shacks in the dead of winter with nothing more than a potbelly stove at best to keep you warm, and only pay them $6000 a year (the average CCC wage, inflation-adjusted). No wifi, no internet, no technological toys of any kind until their term is up. These people love FDR so much, let's see how they like living under the conditions of one of his most famous work programs.
They could keep it local, even, as the old cowardly mantra of 'think global, act local' (now apparently don't think, open mouth, act like childish asshole) is a fucking cop-out. Anyhow, I've noticed that the roads and streets around Smith, like those around many a liberal bastion, are terrible.
The fallout of funding social programs before the infrastructure required to deliver goods and services on which said programs depend. Could be a mantra for the times.
Not restricted to property owners but to net taxpayers.
No one should be allowed to vote themselves free shit taken from others by force.
"I'm about a cunt hair away from changing my view and supporting conscription for every single person between 18 and 20 and forcing them to do manual labor that could be done by heavy machinery"
I worked in a factory for 8? years after high school before going to college (which I am now almost done with) and honestly, I think that some of these special snowflake SJW types would benefit immensely from doing hard and filthy work for years on end (in the way that a child will benefit in the long run from being punished).
Some of the less stupid ones MIGHT just realize that in the real world, nobody gives a shit if you're dissatisfied with your life; that it's up to you to improve it; that you can't stage a protest to get everything you want. I want them to be told to work 12 hour days for 7 days a week, then be told to shut the hell up if they complain.
Also, they might gain a better understanding of what life is really like for the "working class" - since I think most of them went straight from their parents' house to an Ivy league university dorm room and don't have the faintest clue of what it's like to work in a shitty, strenuous job.
Careful with the collective punishment there, sparky. There are plenty of kids at that age working at real jobs and studying real subjects in school.
-jcr
They believe the real world is oppressive, full of micro-aggressions, and fundamentally racist. It is up to them, and like-minded activists, to change the real world because it has been constructed in an evil way by generations of patriarchal, racists oppressors.
They will be running for political office, in order to right the myriad wrongs perpetrated by patriarchal racist America.
Case in point: Sandra Fluke.
How's that going for her?
Who give a FLUCK?
I had forgotten which self-absorbed snowflake she was. I'd almost forgotten the days when the SJW's major demand was that taxpayers be required to pay for them to not get knocked up.
-jcr
MizzouStudent activists at Smith College are barring journalists from covering their activities unless said journalists first pledge their loyalty to said activists' cause.
So, unless journalists are on their side or lie to them about it, the journalists only get to report what they can see without student assistance or interaction?
Own-goal scadenfreude, activate!
Bravo.
And why would they find something wrong with this censorious arrangement, Robby? Smith's administrators have not been the only ones who think that speech should be used only to further the revolutionary agenda and that those who are part of the establishment should be shut out of any discussion.
So of course they would not find nothing wrong, for it perfectly dovetails with their totalitarian political philosophy.
There's clearly a conspiracy afoot but I don't think Sheen is the master mind.
I just hope we can overcome this horrible racism by the time we elect the next black president.
So you're not ready for Carson, then?
"By taking a neutral stance, journalists and media are being complacent in our fight."
But FOX news is the worst thing in the world because they are biased.
This is utterly stupid of the student group and the college, but it's not censorship. The media is perfectly free to write about what's going on, and the silly no-media policy the students are attempting to enact, just as Robby wrote about it.
Normally-public spaces are often closed off for a private event with media barred. Think Obama's private fundraising speeches. Is that censorship?
Nobody called it censorship. It is definitely censorious, but that is not the adjectival form of censorship.
To avoid confusion, media covering these events need guidance, instructions on what themes to emphasize, how to counter critics of the Movement, etc.
Nothing beats getting over the "violent, aggressive" stereotype than dialing it up to 10.
These little brats are not activists. Real activists of the past had some skin in the game. Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, MLK, Malcom X... Regardless of whether or not people agree with every aspect of their ideological views, those people risked their lives. And some paid with their lives. These little snot nose brats don't have to worry about anything. College is paid for, they can't be kicked out (due to the administrator's tolerance of such BS), and so they whine and bitch. This is all just a self absorbed bitch-fest.
I cant wait to see what these morons are doing in 5 to 10 years. Maybe we need a "Where they are now?" show about them. It can be absolutely hilarious (i.e. unemployable and living in the parent's basement) or absolutely horrifying (holy shit they are running for what local government office?!?!?!).
Fuck 'em. They will likely get their asses kicked by the real world of work when they step out of their "safe zones" and "healing spaces".
Can we once and for all time drop the whole 'African American' thing and just say 'black' since those are lives that seemingly matter?
Can one of the 2 or 3 libertarian women in existence go take the pledge and go undercover?
That sumo dude is really not going to like that.
http://www.CompleteAnon.tk
Alyssa Mata-Flores has just rendered herself unemployable by any company whose HR department performs even the most rudimentary background check: googling her name.
Hope she enjoys her career as a barista.
-jcr
Mata-Flores was never going into the private sector anyway. At least not until much, much later.
That is not a necessity, merely a possibility.
IOW, among certain political stripes you the media are not legitimate, merely useful.
Which hardly represents some new development on the left, merely the mask slipping a bit more.
For the sake of humanity put them to sleep.
So the past 50 years just didn't happen? We're back to pre-CRA? I has a confuse.
You have to love the spectacle of old guard PC libtard journalists being accused of supporting racism through neutral reporting, which is barely neutral and hardly reporting. I can hear heads exploding at MSNBC.
It's not fair to say that this is the fault of all Smith students. This is the fault of at least one student, maybe a few more. There are many students at Smith right now - of all political persuasions, right and left - that do NOT agree with what this one student did. The entire student body does not "deserve heaps of criticism" for what one student, or the administration, do. Is Reason.com going to recognize OUR diversity of opinion, too?
Can you provide details backing the 'one student, maybe a few more' statement? The only coverage in the Sophian tends to point to the opposite being generally true, that Smith and Northampton are progressive bastions.
That said, re-read the sentence, 'They deserve heaps of criticism for that, as do the students.' I think you may find Soave is suggesting that the administrators, in addition to the students insisting on fealty deserve criticism, not all students.
I agree, I'm an alum and was macro-attacked recently on the Smith College Alumnae Facebook page. Again, it seemed to be a small group of micro-sensitive, verbal hooligans. Other alumnae who live nearby and are in contact with current students are horrified at how Smith College (and, I assume Dartmouth and the others) are being held hostage and terrorized.
I would love to continue this conversation with you off-line as I'm trying to form a group of current students and alumnae to counter-act this dangerous trend of indulging these brats. You should be able to find me on the Smith Colllege Alumnae Facebook page by reading some of the mash-up this past weekend and anywhere you see graduates bashing a particular older alum. That's me.
I'm a Smith Alum, class of 1984. Recently, I was informed by alumnae from 2014, that despite nearly 40 years of social activism and being a liberal Democrat, I am now a racist, an adultist (old and condescending because I dared to criticize the recent shenanigans), not allowed to speak about racism because I'm white and enjoy "white privilege", a racist again because I don't agree with Black Lives Matter 100%, blah, blah, blah. Today, a young alum told me that it's OK for black folks to insult and degrade white folks but it's racism when a white person tells a black person they're an idiot for wanting to dismantle the 1st Amendment.
Please check out the "official" Black Lives Matter site at http://blacklivesmatter.com/. It's pretty disturbing stuff. My experiences over this weekend have convinced me that this truly is a very dangerous, racist group that has no interest in cooperation. Their attitude towards white men is particularly bothersome. (There have been a few I've wanted to push down the steps, but overall, white men are a decent lot.)
Other Smith alumnae messaged me and told me horror stories about how this small group of malcontents has ruined Smith College. I urge parents to not sent their children to college where this is happening.
We call what they are asking PROPAGANDA, not Journalism.... Make me want to get out my AR-15 and start cleaning up college campuses... HA!
