Watch Students Tell Yale to Fire a Staffer Who Upset Their Safe Space
Yale just became ground zero in the campus free speech wars.

Students are demanding that Yale University fire two administrators who failed to speak out against offensive Halloween costumes. This is just one of the grievances of activist students—many of them people of color—who claim Yale is not a safe space for them.
On Thursday, the students surrounded Yale College Dean Jonathan Holloway—a black man—in an outdoor space and chided him for failing to take action against a fraternity that had allegedly prevented black women from attending its party. (It's not at all clear the allegation is true, according to The Daily Beast.)
After giving Holloway his comeuppance, they moved on to Nicholas Christakis, master of Silliman College. What was Christakis's crime? His wife, an early childhood educator, had responded to a campus-wide email about offensive Halloween costumes by opining that it was inappropriate for the college to tell students how to dress. According to The Washington Post:
"Whose business is it to control the forms of costumes of young people? It's not mine, I know that," wrote Erika Christakis, an early childhood educator and the wife of Nicholas Christakis, the Silliman College master. Both later took to social media to defend the e-mail, incensing students by tying it to debates about free speech and trigger warnings. At a Wednesday night forum hosted by the Afro-American Cultural Center, Erika Christakis sought to leave the meeting during a discussion of her e-mail, further provoking student anger. …
Students grew distressed, with one shouting at Nicholas Christakis to be quiet and questioning why he took the position at the university. "You are a poor steward of this community," the student said. "You should not sleep at night."
As it so happens, Foundation for Individual Rights in Education President Greg Lukianoff was at Yale on Thursday in order to speak on a panel about free speech [Update: the panel was hosted by Christakis, according to The Yale Daily News]. Lukianoff recorded several videos of the confrontation between students and Christakis. The Post described Christakis as "frustrated," but it's important to keep in mind that he patiently listened to the students' litany of complaints for hours. Toward the end of the shouting session, a student made the following comments:
"As your position as master, it is your job to create a place of comfort and home for the students that live in Silliman. You have not done that. By sending out that email, that goes against your position as master. Do you understand that?"
When Christakis replied that he didn't agree, the student thundered back, "Then why the fuck did you accept the position! Who the fuck hired you?"
Christakis began to say that he had a different view of his role at the college, but the student cut him off, saying:
"Then step down! If that is what you think about being a [inaudible] master, then you should step down. It is not about creating an intellectual space! It is not! Do you understand that? It's about creating a home here! You are not doing that. You're going against that."
It is not about creating an intellectual space, the students claim; it's about creating safe spaces. This is as clear an articulation of students' desires as they come, and it summarizes everything that's wrong with the modern college campus.
Students should of course feel free to challenge university administrators—this is the essence of free speech. Students have every right to publicize their concerns and work to make Yale a more welcoming place for marginalized people (and administrators should listen). But a great many students, it seems, don't actually desire a campus climate where such matters are up for debate. By their own admission, they want anyone who disagrees with them branded a threat to their safety and removed from their lives.
If these students get their wish to turn Yale and other campuses into zones of emotional coddling, they will succeed only in destroying the very point of college.

many of them people of color
White is a color. So ... *barf*
It's abso-freaking-lutely ironically hilarious to hear these snowflakes (snowflakes-of-color?) talking about their "master." Didn't watch the video, but did they pronounce it "massah," as in "yessuh, massah, i's a gwine step'n'fetchit"?
Master is the just the title of the faculty member in charge of each residential college. We had the same system at my school.
clearly, that means anyone in the position favors slavery.
I know you are joking but it is an old term imported from the UK from places like Oxford and Cambridge. Similar to how principals at prep schools are sometimes called Headmaster there.
I get it, Yale and Harvard pattern themselves after the UK-style universities with things like "colleges," "masters," and "dining clubs." But the irony of a precious little SJW using such a term and not even realizing it also has a slavery connation is just delicious. BTW, if there are "masters" are there also "mistresses"? Because that would be interesting...
Apparently so, though at my school the masters had to be a married couple and were generally referred to in the plural.
It is important to be very clear about the meaning and connotation of words, because when words are twisted to stir up controversy on a university campus, then a basic threat is posed to the safety of the entire academic community. Professors are as much the victims as students when language is offensively abused, as officials at New York University recognized when they worked together with Manhattan prosecutors to confront unwanted Gmail "parodies" of a distinguished department chairman. See the documentation of America's leading criminal satire case at:
http://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
There is, in fact, a movement at Yale to end the use of "master" in this context because it supposedly evokes slavery. I'm not joking.
Of course there is.
Are they also going to stop giving 'master's degrees?' That might microaggress someone. Also, 'bachelor's degree' is clearly racist against people who are married. Or non-matrimonially partnered. or sexist against them. Or whatever, fuck you.
Those students should be beaten until they are shitting their own teeth and kissing their own blood. Or maybe it's the other way around.
Seriously, these kids deserve an honest-to-god, real, no-nonsense beating. Repeatedly. There's no other answer; people this far gone aren't going to snap back to reality on their own.
it would only reinforce their perception of themselves as noble victims. What should happen is that the students should be booted from school with the recommendation that they spend a few years in the real world maturing themselves so that they might better benefit from college when they're ready to attend.
This x googolplex.
Stop wrecking education, you fuckwads!!
what am I? fucking translucent?
This is my "favorite" story of the day, but Robby has not given you the juiciest parts, to be honest.
I'm having a really bad day, and without those yummy, sweet tears, I am not sure how I would get by.
Yeah, it's totally not "us against them."
Your disagreeing with me is tearing us apart Lisa!
I did not hit her. I did not hit her. I did not...Oh, hai Illocust!
Anyway, how's your sex life?
They betrayed me, they didn't keep their promise, they tricked me, and I don't care anymore!
It was really telling when she compared her dad's embrace to how she expects the master of college to act. She really didn't have the emotional maturity to be an independent adult and still wants the comfort and warmth of being a dependent.
Another snowflake with daddy issues
This is like the Oberlin whiners who wanted their exams deferred because of Treyvon Martin or some other case that had nothing to do with them. They couldn't function in the face of such strain, either.
This is even worse than that.
Those are potent tears of Derp!
Should they be served chilled, cellar temperature or heated?
Tears that good must be served cellar temperature.
So, like a good Belgian Tripel? Excellent.
With sauteed liver and fava beans.
Body temperature of course. Fresh off the tear duct.
I recomend licking it off the cheek.
The salt levels will kill you.
Thank you for doing good work and finding this gem for us, sparing us the need to go into the derp tunnels ourselves. But be careful, or you'll end up turning into the Derpetologist.
I just sent Dr. Christakis an email directly, urging him to hold fast against this idiocy. Said address can be easily located by googling his name and going to the contact page on his website.
Oh boy, I feel sorry for that guy, publicly available email address. He should share his hate mail with these retards just to illustrate that their side is the one full of savages, not the other way around.
Excellent idea. He should do it like Richard Dawkins does his hate mail.
Seriously, whatever kid is "having a breakdown" over an e-mail needs his ass seriously kicked NOW, or he's going to end up getting it completely destroyed by the real world.
Even moar tears for look forward too !
Don't worry, life will most certainly sort this all out, in due time.
They demand the right to control how everyone else acts, and suffer complete breakdowns at the thought that someone might see the world differently than them, or tell them that they are wrong.
This is what comes of undeserved 'self esteem'
I just left a paragraph long rant on that page. Didn't curse, yet I bet the sensitive sissies still will remove it for being "too offensive". I hope they cry themselves to sleep tonight, cause I want some of those tears too
Looks like the editorial has been taken down. I don't know if that's because they realized it reflected poorly on the university, out if the author was too emotionally disturbed by the comments being left on it.
It seems to be yet another case where an institution is paralysed by its incapability to respond to these SJW panic-attacks with anything other than desperate attempts to placate and pretend some kind of solidarity.
Business Insider covers some of the related drama @ Yale =
""The tension on campus started with a two-sentence post on Facebook by Yale sophomore...
"...Yale's SAE chapter ...turned away a group of girls from their party last night, explaining that admittance was on a 'White Girls Only' basis; and a belated shoutout to the SAE member who turned me and my friends away for the same reason last year. God Bless the USA.""
Members of the SAE frat have categorically denied turning away any students based on their race or ethnicity, according to the Yale Daily News. "
Yeah, i'm sure its not a completely made-up accusation.
Naturally, this made-up accusation prompted a bunch of others to whip out their Fee-Fee-hurt stories as well
"""Their words ? from 'charity case' to 'ghetto Black bitch' ? continued to echo in my head. Fear paralyzed me as their discussions of my Black body and hair turned into taunts and fondling.""
Apparently one complaint attracts a million new ones.... And of course, the yale president goes... "We failed you"...
And of course, the yale president goes... "We failed you"...
That's the ONE line of the story with which I wholeheartedly agree. Yale did fail these oversized infants, by not demanding that the kids nut up and be adults. In fact, the Ivy League schools were in large part at fault for the philosophical view that led to the creation of these SJW special snowflake types.
So....Yes Mr. Yale president. You did fail them. You failed us. You failed America, and western civilization as a whole.
This.
WTF?
This whole thing is about Halloween Costumes. COSTUMES?!!! COSTUMES?!?!! FUCKING COSTUMES!!
If they can't handle a fucking costume that "offends" them, then they should go back home to mommy and daddy and climb back in their fucking crib.
Bah. The whole Yale Herald site now gives a 403 forbidden error. Something tells me that the snowflakes are flipping out over the backlash, and decided ot turn turtle.
Who would hire these fucks for anything? They are worse than children; more empowered / self-righteous versions of children who throw temper tantrums after they don't get their way
The government will hire these fucks.
It's the new Triangular Trade Route: Government-Media-NGO, then back.
The higher education bubble bursting is going to be especially rough on these people.
Luckily for them, they'll also be the people bailing the higher education out as much as possible.
Pretty much the entire government is run by these fucks.
Or will be. Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but this level of blind idiocy seems kind of new.
pay more attention! realville is gone.
Doubtful, or else telling them no would result in a crying fit instead of horrifying violence.
Or maybe not... I told my three year old "no" once while I was holding her, and she looked at me with murder in her eyes, put both hands on my neck, and tried to strangle me. I still can't find the 666 on her scalp, but it has to be there somewhere.
^^This. Until Recently had to work with 18-20 year olds, new to the military, being trainec in sopisticated technological jobs. Troubled Cry babies.
"Then why the fuck did you accept the position! Who the fuck hired you?"
That's not even a microagression, that's straight up aggression.
I would relish the opportunity to show these little punks true rage and aggression.
To which the "master" should have replied "shut your ignorant, disrepectful mouth, you stupid little shit, or I'll shut it for you, with my fist."
Potential answer: "the same people who admitted you to Yale"
I tried to watch the videos - got about half way through the second before I couldn't take her sniveling any longer.
I also stopped in the second video as one dumb shit is whining about how he wouldn't "provide an apology" to the first whiny dumb shit. What does an aneurysm feel like?
Dear Erika Christakis,
You say I only hear what I want to
You say I talk so all the time so
And I thought what I felt was simple
And I thought that I don't belong
Damn you. I liked that song. Now I'm always going to laugh when I hear it.
I have had to watch my friends defend their right to this institution. This email and the subsequent reaction to it have interrupted their lives. I have friends who are not going to class, who are not doing their homework, who are losing sleep, who are skipping meals, and who are having breakdowns. I feel drained.
I suggest said snowflakes immediately withdraw from such a harsh, unforgiving hellscape as Yale!
It would seem such mental distress from such a bland email points to severe inability to cope with the trials of every day life. If the mere whiff of someone thinking they should not enforce their view on other makes you miss meals, sleep, homework, and class there is no telling how you would react to someone directly insulting them. I fear these delicate students are a suicide risk and need to admitted to a mental health facility until they are healed enough to interact with the outside world without being a danger to themselves.
I honestly don't know how a person like this survived (and apparently thrived well enough to be admitted to Yale). I'd bet that none of these children could have survived my childhood, on a cattle ranch in the Arkansas mountains.
I'd also be willing to bet that I was more well-educated in a small-town Arkansas high school (graduating in 1984) than they were in whatever elite prep school they attended.
It's truly frightening that these people have the inside track to being the future leaders of the country. Surely the inevitable adversity will cause them to implode, sparing us their presence in high levels of government.
Seeing this video does explain why so many of our government's administrators are so mindblowingly stupid.
The fact that this college administrator didn't strangle every squishy little failed attempt at humanity in that room is commendable, or damnable, depending on how you want to look at it.
If these students get their wish to turn Yale and other campuses into zones of emotional coddling, they will succeed only in destroying the very point of college.
We must create an environment where children can learn to make their way in the real world, and how can we teach them that if they're not in a completely stress-free, space safe?
We must create an environment where children can learn to make their way in the real world, and how can we teach them that if they're not in a completely stress-free, space safe an environment that bears no relation whatsoever to the real world?
The really smart people of our society go to Yale, right? It's a hard school to get into. These are amongst our best and brightest.
Legacies? Athletes on Ultimate Frisbee scholarships?
It's even worse, it's Frisbee Golf scholarships.
If these kids are the best and brightest, WE ARE FUCKED!
Don't worry, they aren't. We may be fucked anyway because too many people will assume that they are the elites.
PS: Don't forget that 'the best and brightest' was a pejorative.
More like most neurotic and psychotic.
What's the over/under on how long it takes Yale to cave? Let me put a twenty on by the end of Monday (a whole weekend for the dainty, offended flowers to get even more pissed and vocal and the workday Monday for the school to decide to offer up a sacrificial lamb).
I'd be happy to see these geniuses eating themselves if things like this didn't impact so many who don't deserve it.
I'll take that bet. This guy seems to have a pair, she he was the one who invited the guy from FIRE.
These are the same students that won't learn an actual skill or get a job out of college, then ask YOU to forgive their student debt.
Oh they're learning some skills. They're learning that when you don't get your way, throw a temper tantrum.
Boss not giving you a raise? Temper tantrum!
See, prepares them for the workforce.
"These are the same students that won't learn an actual skill or get a job out of college, then *DEMAND THAT* YOU to forgive their student debt."
FTFY
"Students should of course feel free to challenge university administrators?this is the essence of free speech."
Yale is a private school they don't have to let anyone do anything.
The school isn't legally required to permit students to complain, but free speech is more than just the law. It is a general philosophy that the best way to deal with uncomfortable opinions is to discuss them. This is especially important in am institution of higher learning. Telling students to shut up and do as they are told doesn't help them learn (at least not at the level college students are supposed to be at).
Students have every right to publicize their concerns and work to make Yale a more welcoming place for marginalized people (and administrators should listen).
This rather begs the question of who is marginalized, doesn't it? Sounds to me like the students are trying very hard to marginalize anyone who isn't committed to the SJW ideology and crusade.
I have friends who are not going to class, who are not doing their homework, who are losing sleep, who are skipping meals, and who are having breakdowns.
Oh, fer fuck's sake. There is no place in this world safe enough for these people. If you put them in solitary confinement, they could probably microaggress against themselves and marginalize themselves.
They are mentally ill, and its past time to call them out on it, and point out that it is not an accepted treatment of mentally ill people to facilitate and reinforce their illness.
If I ever end up a hiring manager, and I Googled one of these nut jobs, that would be the first resume in the shredder.
They're not mentally ill. They are merely using SJW shit or safe space shit as an excuse to form a mob. It's just a vehicle, a way to have a mob that can't just be called a flat out mob (because mobs are bad). These "philosophies" are just frameworks for going after people you don't like. They're basically designed as aggressive weapons.
And look! They work. Which sucks.
SJW saint john's wart?
I'm not sure it's fair to people with real mental illnesses to lump them in with these idiots.
I have depression. It's a mental illness. But I don't demand that the world be padded and have all the corners be rounded off for me.
You know, I think that if you are a student at Yale, you are pretty much not marginalized by definition.
^^ This.
There are 100 Asian kids with 2400 SATs, Yale rejects every one, quietly studying for midterms somewhere this morning......
"...make Yale a more welcoming place for marginalized people..."
Read: protecting/enhancing their privileges over others.
Nicholas Christakis spoke at a company event my employer put on earlier this year. Good guy.
In the article that Nikki posted above, I note that the following sentence was intended as an insult.
Yale needs to step up though. Courtesy of sporadic Reason contributor Brendan O'Neill (editor of the quite readeable Spiked magazine):
Why are student union officials censoring criticism of Islamic State?
On that note, he seems to be becoming more regular over on Spectator, too, which is a development I approve of. They need more non-statist voices over there.
Once highly political authoritarians get their foot in the door, you usually have to wait for them to purge themselves, which they eventually seem to do.
"Purge"...was that some sort of fat-shaming microagression? To the re-education camps you go!
Fat shaming is clearly a macroagression.
^LOL
Interesting how the "safe space" shit is starting to take on a mob/bully aspect. Just like SJWs did (and the two of them are somewhat related, so that makes some sense).
It's incredible how people keep finding ways to do this bullying mob thing. From doing it on Facebook or Twiter, to "safe spaces", to SJWs, to whatever, it's just shitheads using some excuse as a vehicle for banding together to shout down/bully/intimidate people they don't like.
Your comment made all of my friends cry, and we're not just going to lie down about it.
It's like this weird lensing, or reflecting, of the supposed actual bad thing that's being done. Like, you violated my safe space, so I get to go ten times more apeshit on you for it. Like, if what they did is so bad, maybe you shouldn't go back at them worse about it?
It's like saying "ow, he punched me in the arm!" and then responding by hitting the person who hit you with a tire iron. It's completely disproportionate. That's the whole thing about all this shit: all the complaints, all the responses to perceived violations, it's all utterly disproportionate to the actual "offense". I mean, they're fucking called microaggressions! But they sure aren't treated that way.
It's like saying "ow, he punched me in the arm!" and then responding by hitting the person who hit you with a tire iron. It's completely disproportionate.
Or responding to a furtive movement with a volley of poorly aimed gunfire and then complaining that you feared for your life?
Well...yeah. It's completely being the aggressor but finding a way to claim that you are the victim instead, thereby justifying your aggression. Like I said, these "philosophies" are merely social weapons that people can use to justify being the aggressor. It's quite disgusting and pathetic.
I find it infinitely more disturbing when that applies to the state-sanctioned agents of force instead of some whiny little twerp. Revolutions have been started for less.
Clarification: by "whiny little twerp" I mean college students, not the whiny little twerps who get their rocks off by dressing up like soldiers and bullying around the people they scornfully call "civilians".
Well, yes we are. And we are going to skip meals and have breakdowns
*silently sobs and rocks in corner*
I wonder if any of that is actually true, by the way.
A lot of people are good at ginning up the required emotions when it is useful. I'm sure some of it is true.
Damn, I didn't know the intellectual rot went this deep. I figured it was only so blatant in places like Berkeley. It'll be interesting to see if Yale fights back or not. They've got to realize they won't be able to actually please these students no matter what they do.
I'm thinking it's a small minority that act that way. Well, I'm hoping so...
"They have again and again shown that they are committed to an ideal of free speech, not to the Silliman community."
Wow just wow.
I assume paddling is forbidden in the Skull and Bones dungeon.
Yes, however, pegging is still fine as it's showing solidarity with the gays.
What precious, precious little snowflakes! God forbid they learn anything at college besides how to be offended and offensive over the most inane and insane topics. Their future bosses are so not going to care about providing them a safe space, crayons, etc. Or their landlords, mortgage company, utility company, etc. when they object to paying bills to evil corporations.
I really don't know how they will manage adulthood. It will be interesting and probably sad and pathetic to watch. I'd say hooray for job security, but I'd like to retire sooner than later.
I don't get it either. How are these kids going to survive in the real world? What happens if their boss disciplines them for something? Or anyone at the office says something they don't like? How will they react?
They've got any number of alphabet soup agencies they can whine to and use to extract money from their employers. And they've got advocates and social pressure to put on people that don't tow the lion. At least that's the plan.
^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS! You can't actually fire anyone anymore for things like "theft" and "job abandonment" without them crying to myriad state and federal agencies that they've been mistreated.
In my company, we have offices in two cities close together. In my office, everyone is married, with kids and mortgages. In the other office, it's a nest of millenials with no clue. My office is being run into the ground, having to take on projects being ignored by the other office. The partner finally laid down the law: mandatory 10 hour days until we are caught up. I would love a 10 hour day. That would be a half-day for me at this point. What happened after the directive went out? The millenials are quitting.
I really don't know how they will manage adulthood.
By being trust fund beneficiaries.
I really don't know how they will manage adulthood.
Hopefully several of them will consider suicide as an option of dealing with reality. They'd be doing themselves, and the rest of society, a huge favor.
Part of me prefers a hostage swap w ISIS to free some Kurds and Yazadis. These asshole pansies will learn about safe spaces and hyperdiversity real fucking fast.
Not all of them can be lucky enough to be trust fund babies though.
Oh, fer Christakis! This is ridiculous.
*narrows gaze*
Perhaps this will encourage Yale to tighten up its admissions policy.
Just kidding! No doubt this is feeds into the admissions board's idea of diversification.
The University system is dead.
These fucking pussies are in for a real dose of reality when they leave Yale. And methinks they will all be pretty fucked, too.*
*except for the ones that will get cushy government jobs and tenured professorships where they can spread their fucking bullshit to the next generation of pussies.
"he Post described Christakis as "frustrated," but it's important to keep in mind that he patiently listened to the students' litany of complaints for hours."
Oh, I see, Christakis is a convicted felon whose crime was so severe that prison was too good for him - so he was sentenced to be hectored by retard-students about Halloween.
This is the most economical explanation I can think of for why he didn't just walk away.
(Note to Christakis' lawyers: That was a joke)
If true, that's a pretty clear violation of the 8th Amendment.
C'mon, man. Even real retards don't do this shit. Using the R-word here is a real disservice to the retard community.
It is not about creating an intellectual space
The students demonstrated that concept to a high degree of confidence.
Don't let the big, scary door hit you in the ass on your way out, Snowflake.
I actually take comfort in knowing that all the whiny pussies out there aren't white. It seems the Black community has their fair share as well.
Who says we haven't made any progress?
Behind every dark cloud...
A "safe space" started out as a bar, club, or organization where gay people didn't have to be around straight people. Now all of a sudden it's a fucking global padded room for people who have been trained somehow to be emotional wrecks over nothing.
I feel comfortable saying this for a couple reasons, even though I'm a white guy. First, the one minority status I do possess allows me to make an analogy. I've been ten feet away from people holding signs reading "God hates fags" and other such sentiments. My friends and I never broke down crying. We laughed at them to their faces and behind their backs. The whole goddamn point was to be emotionally strong enough to handle the cruel world. If ever anyone was unconsciously gauche, say with a Halloween costume, the best way to handle it is with manners: ignore it.
Second, if these activists who've cropped up with their shiny new "safe spaces" lexicon can't win me over, then they sure as hell aren't going to convince the hordes of white neanderthals who have no interest in their ideas in the first place. If anything, the whites will take their privilege and be all the more secure in it. I have been in activist circles, and success actually takes deep strategy, not shouting ridiculous demands at people who would be the first to join your cause.
Never thought I'd say this to a Tony post, but, um, well... "This". Without the "white neanderthals" part that is.
Tony is unabashedly racist and is set in his ways in that respect.
"A "safe space" started out as a bar, club, or organization where gay people didn't have to be around straight people. "
But a space where straight people don't have to be around gay people is....? Homophobic, right?
Progressive motto: "But it's ok when we do it!"
I don't know. They seem to be pretty successful right now. They shout ridiculous things that can't be defended or predicted against. Make ridiculous demands and paint you as satan for moving two second too slow. And most importantly they never ever admit they are wrong. Even when they lose they just use it as more fuel for the next time, and their recruitment doesn't seem to be slowing down.
Success means policies are changed and tangible results happen. So far all I see is an ever-shifting and occasionally hysterical lecture about the issues and the language. BLM has had some success at getting noticed by people in power, and hopefully fewer people will be shot in the back by cops in the future as a result. I see that and the other real-world black issues as separate from the movement to attack free expression, and I think they would be wise not to conflate them.
No, they would be honorable not to conflate them. It would be wise (in a strategic sense) to conflate them as much as possible. They are well aware that the easiest way to win an argument is to make sure that their opponent isn't allowed to show up.
ONE OF US.
ONE OF US.
Bullshit, Tony
You liberals have been leading up to this for years, and now that it finally blew up in your face, you're acting like it isn't representative of liberal thought/culture.*
*by liberals I mean leftists, of course, not classical liberals
From claiming that any and everything that the other side does is racism, to claiming we have to protect minorities from vaguely defined injustices, you have been leading up to this, you guys were just too stupid to see it coming
Tony (or more accurately one of the sockpuppet's handlers) as opined on safe spaces like this pretty regularly. He may be overstating it but it is not my experience that a all leftists/liberals buy this bullshit.
Maybe so. I personally have always differed from liberals who mistake the policing of language and expression for actually working to decrease harm to minorities. Gay activists at least have never been about PC. Hang around them for two seconds if you don't believe me. Of course maybe the younger ones are hopping on the bandwagon, I don't know, and I think that would be a horrible mistake--and I do distinguish them from trans activists, who have been the originators of some of the hypersensitive stuff.
Recently I've had to face the terrible possibility that mainstream liberalism might be getting something wrong, so you may have a point. But, of course, most libertarians and Republicans aren't even at the table and often do plainly racist shit.
Of course maybe the younger ones are hopping on the bandwagon
Yeah... I think that's a pretty safe bet.
From a couple days ago: http://tinyurl.com/q5fowro
Yeah I don't know what to make of that. I can't find any info on that protest group outside of articles about this event. Their complaint reads almost as parody, but who could tell the difference?
But, of course, most libertarians... aren't even at the table and often do plainly racist shit.
How the fuck would you know? Because you've hung out here for a while?
We may not be at YOUR table, but it takes some breathtaking stupidity to make that claim about millions... ok, thousands... ok, maybe just hundreds of people you've never met.
Because not wanting to grant special privileges and free shit = plainly racist shit.
Hey Tony, here's $100.
"Gay activists at least have never been about PC."
The root of this stupid shit is modern feminism, because it's basically about embracing their insanity (demanding to be considered an equal by acting weak, hysterical, and distinctly inferior), and applying it to all the other lefty fights out there. Fortunately labor has mostly avoided it; if I have to watch a Teamster with tears streaming down his face sobbing about how a smaller-than-expected raise lazy-shamed him, that will be the last fucking straw.
Ha! I was thinking earlier about where the hypersensitivity-is-good thing started. I thought it might be the trans rights movement and their insistence that everyone learn 50 pronouns. Feminism has many schools, and I don't generally associate them with hypersensitivity.
Maybe you're right. It seems like everything started jumping the fucking shark around the time that the relatively simple LGBT movement started adding so many fucking letters that only a hardcore ideologue could keep track of them all.
Actually, maybe it was the Islamists. I can't help but wonder if the mental strain of trying to be hardcore on women's and gay rights, while also being hardcore about not offending any Muslim, even the acid-throwing, gay-stoning fringe, just completely burned out their capacity to actually hold coherent views.
"Hang around them for two seconds if you don't believe me."
I don't think you understand them yourself. I've heard plenty of uber-progressive gay people, minorities, women be extremely 'unPC' around each other. Sometimes they will even be quite offensive about other 'victim groups.' For example, it's fairly common in my neighborhood (which is a cross between poor ghetto and university hipster haven) to hear an angry black guy (or girl) say worse things about gay people or women than I've ever heard in white suburbia, all like it's no big deal - but then when a white guy mentions his three favorite musicians, and all of them are white, he/she goes on an angry (often threatening) rant about how racist said white person is for not listing any black musicians.
In my experience, most PC people who belong to 'victim groups' have no qualms about being offensive as they please, even being outright bigots; and not just hating white people or men; I mean black people hating latinos, gay people hating women, etc. It's because the standards just don't apply to them. The standards exist for 'oppressor classes,' not for the oppressed. Of course sometimes you'll get a feminist woman overhearing a gay guy's sexist remark, or a latino overhearing a black guys anti-latino remark, and then one of two things happen: the victimhood Olympics ensues (very entertaining) or they eventually all settle into agreement on the fact that the cishet white male is the true enemy of all of them.
The cishet white male is simply the overwhelmingly dominant demographic in every aspect of society. Sorry, all the unfairness that comes your way must really suck.
No, you're just paying attention to the ones that they dominate. Certainly they aren't so obviously dominant in sports, nor in technology, nor in teaching kindergarten classes; men in general (whites included) are underrepresented in education, overrepresented in prison, and have shorter life expectancy, etc.
Maybe that's true to some extent in politics, but there are a lot of other factors in play, and most white men are as shut out of that system for unalterable bullshit reasons as anyone else. A sortition based system for the House of Representatives would fix that (for everyone) to some extent, but eh.
Men of course dominate the prisons, homeless shelters, suicides, etc. No doubt Tony considers all that a form of male privilege. It's funny how progressivism works. In most ways black people are worse off than white people, males are worse off than women. And yet, these twats will fight to the death to keep homeless men getting sent to prison because they can't send a check to his well-off ex-wife. Helping the poor indeed. I wonder how even they can convince themselves it's not all just about buying votes from targeted demographics.
Yeah we all live on easy street.
Fact is there's really only one kind of privilege that's truly significant in life: the privilege of having good parents. I will probably be more successful than you, not because I don't suck dick, but because I have self-discipline, because my parents instilled good habits in me, studied and did well in school, and am willing to make the necessary sacrifices to do well in life, and of course have very good genes.
I'm sorry but I've heard way too many of these bullshit sob stories and without exception, they're just people looking to avoid having to face their own stupidity, poor impulse control, and lack of character. I have also known more than a few incompetents who have used their victim status (usually gender) to bully their way into jobs, promotions, educational opportunities, etc. I believe that's called privilege, right?
Some people get shafted, it's true, but the for the vast majority it's because they serially make poor choices. If you want their children not to make poor choices the way so many cishet white male like me magically go through life without making poor choices, maybe you should stop rewarding people for making poor choices. Just a thought.
Either cishet white males have something genetically special about them that makes them so much more prosperous in our society, or something is wrong with society. The conversation is not about individuals or anecdotes. It's about structural issues. You don't even realize you're doing little besides whine about how bad white dudes have it. If you think victim culture is bad, why indulge in it, only more absurdly?
Tony - You're the fucking whiner
"If you want their children not to make poor choices the way so many cishet white male like me magically go through life without making poor choices, maybe you should stop rewarding people for making poor choices. Just a thought."
^^This.
As the lily white mother of two lily white boys, I let them live the consequences of their poor choices. I'm not going to be there the rest of their lives to bail them out. They are learning to either make better choices or figure out a way to bail themselves out. White privilege.
Just when I think you're about to evolve sentience along comes this. Disappointing.
Origins of the hypersensitive stuff... that would be the Left's MO of shouting down and vilifying anyone who didn't immediately prostrate themselves.
"Would be?" What rock are you living under?
But, of course, most libertarians and Republicans aren't even at the table and often do plainly racist shit.
Opposing the progressive and neo-Marxist social justice agenda may be "plainly racist" to you, but that is your lack of understanding.
Oh, I have a little lump in my throat that there is finally an issue that can cause agreement between me and Tony. I never thought this day would come.
Yes, world peace is possible!
In all seriousness, (mostly) well done Tony. Tony, have you ever had a chance to talk with one of these students or others like them? Have you acquired any understanding? I think you would have more credibility with them than I would as a white straight guy.
It's interesting, because I know people who were lefty activists in college and did things a certain way then (not that long ago, mind you), and now are still working as activists but have adopted this new hypersensitive routine. It comes from academia, basically, and they seem to be in a mode of exploring the academic study of these issues, finding it mind-blowing, and then getting out and telling others what they learned. They mistake this lecturing for activism.
I do insist on keeping my mind open to the possibility that I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about because I'm a privileged white dude. But, one thing I know for certain, as I said, is that if I struggle to understand the point of this, despite my interest and alliance with the interests, then there's a supermajority of people out there who aren't going to make the slightest effort. Pragmatically this seems obviously a flawed approach.
Ah, base-rate fallacy?
They are in an academic setting where they learn the history of the most terrible acts of racism and other acts of repression and violence against minorities of all types. These events make them mad, as they would any thinking individual.
So then, they think those events are much more common than they are, so they start finding them everywhere in the nooks and crannies of their lives. They want to be the noble fighters they learned about in class.
It's like an engineer going into a bar and assuming everyone there knows calculus and getting highly offended by people who can't do long division. They don't get outside of their own heads. A microaggression is very possibly a worthy object of study. It can be as real as you like and have all the negative effects that are claimed. But there's a difference between studying a thing and being an activist. The latter takes strategy and an understanding of human nature in the real world.
I thought of another analogy: anti-fur activists. Have they managed to rid the world of animal-based clothing? No, they haven't achieved shit. Like the types of activists we're talking about, they go after easy targets and make themselves ridiculous in the process. It's the old thing about how they throw paint on old ladies wearing fur coats but ignore biker gangs in all-leather. These guys aren't going to Republican rallies. They're targeting their own allies! What are they trying to achieve? As I speculate, it seems just to be spreading the arcane knowledge to people who might have a chance of grasping it.
Your ethnicity doesn't make a difference as to the rightness or wrongness of your thoughts. I mean you're clearly wrong about almost all of your beliefs, but your race has nothing to do with it. If ever there was a category of man that was purely a social construct, it's that of "privileged white". Racism is racism, Tony.
It's really not. The actual problem of racism (as opposed to your rote dictionary understanding) is about the disadvantages suffered by members of oppressed races, and how expressions and attitudes contribute to the continuance of that oppression. White people do not generally lose any of our privilege if someone doesn't like white people.
Furthermore, like it or not, knowledge is informed deeply by experience. You can read every book ever published on the subject of racism and still not understand it as deeply as someone who's actually been victimized by it. By the same token, a black person may not be able to fully understand what it's like to live as a white person.
This may seem absurd to you, but it's the same as with anything else. You can read all the cookbooks in the world, but being a chef takes actually doing a lot of cooking, n'est-ce pas?
My logically consistent, non-malleable understanding of the term, that can't be so easily weaponized.
Who is being oppressed? And who is oppressing?
Anecdotal knowledge exists, yes Tony. Good job.
Like a person who is routinely told they're an oppressor class monster because of the color of their skin? Like a person who gets turned down for a job or an apartment because they aren't victimy enough?
Actually being able to empathize helps you distinguish fact from fiction in human interaction. A person like you who couldn't pass an Ideological Turing Test to save his life, wouldn't know anything about that.
I'll note that one of the main reasons that speech-suppressing "safe spaces" exist is because arguments like "white guys are the real victim of racism!" have already been heard a thousand times and they don't want to waste their lives hearing it another thousand.
Dipshit, no one here is saying "white guys are the real victim of racism!". They are saying white people can be, and often are, the victims of racism. Full stop. That's what your retarded co-coreligionists deny.
I reiterate my challenge. You demand 'equality', but you yourselves can't even come close to treating people equally! So why the fuck should any white person take seriously the standards proposed by someone who can't abide by those very standards? Hypocrisy is basically the very essence of leftist race/gender ideology. The fact that you perpetually and proudly demand the right to treat others in ways that you demand they be forbade from treating you is, how shall I put this, completely fucking retarded. And if it's all about black people getting theirs and fuck white people, women getting theirs and fuck men, all about self-interest, or cathartic collective punishment, well how the hell could you even blame white people or males or whoever from seeking nothing but their own self-interest, equality be damned? When has any other group done any differently?
Motte and Bailey in action. Once one is on the lookout for it, it is astounding how commonly it rears its head.
In any event, cheers to most of your original post. I'll assume the "Neanderthal" moniker was intended tongue-in-cheek.
The actual problem is that you confuse a statistical association between "race" and outcomes with individual injustice.
I'm an immigrant (and gay for that matter). The average African American was a lot more "privileged" than I, faced a lot less discrimination, and had a lot more opportunities open to him. Yet, somehow people like you categorize me as a "privileged white male" simply because of my skin color and appearance. That makes you the racist, Tony.
Oppression and injustice can always ever be determined at an individual level. Looking at them as collective properties based on irrelevant and superficial attributes like race is the essence of racism. And that kind of racism is at the heart of progressivism: claims of race-based injustice was at the heart of European national socialism.
"...that I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about because I'm a privileged white dude."
I reiterate that a black person or women claiming this with regard to race/gender issues is every bit as absurd as a white guy implying that a minority or woman must not know a think about personal finance because of their race/gender.
"Privilege" is pretty much without exception a cop out. It invariably assumes that the 'underprivileged' person is immune to confirmation bias while the 'over privileged one' is not, even if the latter's case is less based on experience than the former. It's a meaningless vagary, like the what aether is to scientific thought.
No, "it" is a product of the Left's own tactics. Shout down and vilify anyone who doesn't immediately agree with your ideology. You are correct and they are always wrong regardless of facts because you have emotions and feelings about something so OBVIOUSLY it's important. Which leads to issues of entitlement and finally narcissism of unfathomable depths.
Excellent post, Tony.
So, exclusion was OK when your side does it, correct? And don't give us some shit excuse about gay-bashing. You're whole context is that of just not wanting to be around those not like you.
I wonder...I wonder what other places do that-hang out in places intended to exclude others... But, of course any other group who does so is prima facie "wrong", eh Tony?
Yeah, this is a good example of not even getting the basics. One needs a safe space when one's safety is threatened by a more dominant group. That's not the same motivation of a golf club that excludes blacks and Jews. It is actually first about protecting people from gay bashing. Less urgently but also importantly, it's also about being able to have a place where you can be your honest self and not have to feel constant anxiety about it.
Let me explain it this way: You know the way you can walk around any public space or at work and not feel remotely anxious about your mannerisms or discussing your spouse? A safe space like a gay bar gives gay people a few hundred square feet where they can feel that same calm you take for granted.
"You know the way you can walk around any public space or at work and not feel remotely anxious about your mannerisms or discussing your spouse?"
And this is where you illustrate your own arrogance: you just assumed that he never experienced anxiety about things like that.
This is something all you people do; you have these bad feelings, and then you assume, with no justification, that the 'Other' must live free of these feelings. Feminists do this all the time. "Men don't live in fear of being attacked in public." Well of course they do; the fact that they experience on average more physical violence in their lives than women is precisely why they are so much more de-sensitized to it by the time their adults.
You do not understand other people better than they understand you. You and your ilk need to get that shit out of your heads. Feminist women telling men what what it's like to be a man, racial activist defining the white experience, etc. All of the asinine and bigoted assumptions these groups make about their 'Others' without the least regard for what those 'Others' actually experience is not fundamentally different from the other way around. The fact that you could so unabashedly shit on the very behavioral standard you expect others to live by is precisely why you don't deserve to be taken seriously.
Sooo women and minorities should work harder to understand what it's like to be a white dude, but white dudes already understand everything about the experiences of women and minorities what with their naturally superior wisdom?
I said explicitly elsewhere that nonwhite nondudes will equally struggle to empathize. The difference is white dudes are considered the default person and have most of the power and wealth. The problem is not the natural human inability to empathize. It's the power imbalance.
Listen genius, I was saying (quite clearly) that no one should purport to understand what anyone else's experiences are like based on superficial qualities, nor should anyone think that their experiences are more representative of reality based on such superficial qualities. If your paranoia motivates you to come to a different conclusion, that's your problem.
"The problem is not the natural human inability to empathize. It's the power imbalance."
No, you could not be more wrong. Racism is not about power imbalance. No one ever even attempted to prove that claim, they just took it at an axiom. People from different cultures with different languages and laws and customs naturally distrust each other, especially when they are competing or scarce resources with each other as we have since time immemorial. That's the root of racism. Racism may perpetuate power imbalances between races, but power imbalances are not the result of racism.
Black people are every bit as racist as white people; powerless races every bit as racist as powerful ones; which races are the powerful ones is not determined by racial conspiracies but usually by better technology (in other words geographical good luck; i.e.d "Guns, Germs, and Steel"). But the idea that racism is a feature of power is horse shit.
Now, one could argue that society should be more worried about the racism of a white Senator than about the racism of a black sharecropper because the latter is powerless to implement his evil ideas while the former is not; however, the weight of severity given to racism should be conditional not to the race of it's bearer but to their power, no? So when a racist black congressman like Charlie Rangel is in a position of power and has the ability to implement racist policies such as by attacking meritocracy (he compared opposition to affirmative action to Naziisim if I recall correctly) which leads to unfair treatment, I see no reason why Rangel should get a pass because he's supposedly a member of a 'powerless race.' Bullshit; he's a powerful man whatever race he belongs to. What's more, as black people get more powerful (as they are getting), their racism should get taken *more* seriously, not less seriously, because it becomes more of an issue for other races (White people and Asians, and Jews if you count them as a separate race, most notably). Instead, progressives are going in the opposite direction of getting ever more forgiving of racist, even genocidal rhetoric from 'civil rights activist' or whomever.
I would also note that, contrary to your standard dichotomous oppressor/oppressed over-simplified model of the world, it's different with each variable. Race, class, gender, ethnicity are not all the same of even similar. Poor people and black people may be wore off in almost all categories than rich people and white people (though I'd say for different reasons than you think; no racist conspiracy or white supremacist superstructure is necessary for such disparities to emerge). But in gender, women are better off than men in as many ways as they are worse off. In ethnicity, western Jews, Malaysian Indians, and Italo-Brazilians are/were all classes that faced legal and social discrimination even as they were economically and sometimes politically more successful than the native peoples; in such cases, who is the oppressor? In any case, it's marginally more intricate and less dichotomous a thing than most would like to believe.
Geez, what a fuckin novel. Let that one get away from me.
I believe he was talking about altruism (demented parasitical obsession with others as hosts, crowds or groups) or collectivism (lower primate, schooling fish and ruminant herd instinct). Try framing a thought without reference to altruist or collectivist dogma just once, and it becomes clear that the concern here is how to avoid being opted into the gratuitous coercion and violence all altruist collectivists favor so long as it is directed at someone else.
You can't determine "power imbalance" based on race, it's something that exists between individuals. Obama and Carson are much more powerful, and their kids are much more privileged, than I have been or will ever be as a gay, light-skinned immigrant.
And that's why we should have freedom of association, so that people can be with other people and exclude those they don't feel comfortable with.
What you are arguing for is not safe spaces, but denying safe spaces to people who you deem undeserving.
Well, there was the whole thing about being arrested, severely beaten, murdered, fired from your job, and even having your personal assets seized by the state while you were committed to a mental hospital for being gay. That might just create a bit of demand for safe space.
I'm all for integration... but I tend to find the people like yourself who claim to be outraged by "the other side demanding the right to be by themselves" are also the sort of people who would lose their shit if someone of the same gender hit on them or asked them out on a date. They also tend to be the same sort of people who advocate the arrest, severe beating, murder, firing, asset-stripping and involuntary committal of gay people.
Well, to be sure, why is it that (by prog standards) a woman is justified in responding with violence (such as slapping in the face) to a man making advances toward her, and that violence is a celebrated part of "equality", but if a straight man were to do the same when a gay man makes sexual advances toward him, it would be 'homophobic?'
Why am I expected to tolerate gay men saying or doing things to me 'in the spirit of tolerance' that if I were a woman and a straight man were doing it, I would get applauded by everyone in the bar for kicking him in the nuts?
This particular magazine is not collectivist. If you seek to be an ostracized victim for envelopment within a given circle on a collectivist Venn Diagram you might try collectivist mag fora like for Slime or Newspeak, You Ess News & World Report, Life, Ladies Home Journal, Tikkun, Mother Jones, Utne Reader, The Masses, People, Cosmopolitan, The New Yorker, Woman's Day, TV Guide, Glamor, O, American Legion, Parenting or Redbook. Nobody here (except the demented socialist infiltrator) advocates any kind of asset forfeiture or laws regulating adults' sexual preferences. I discovered the LP on the same campus where I studied math and physics and it was and still is the only outfit on campus that urged no superstitious Talmudic, Koranian or Biblical discrimination. This is where people come to try to get things done without threats at gunpoint. Wrong door maybe?
You're mixing up government-sponsored discrimination and freedom of association. And the irony is that after government harmed gay men and women, your solution is to call for more government intervention.
Furthermore, the issue is not that progressives permit gay men and women to create exclusionary places, it is that progressives want to deny the same right to other groups.
Says the guy posting on the website for the political equivalent of gays or transgendered or whatever. Yeah, we don't "exclude" cons and libs in the sense of banning them, we just make sure they know their stupid bullshit isn't wanted here and they can take it back to Salon or Breitbart or wherever the fuck.
"A "safe space" started out as a bar, club, or organization where gay people didn't have to be around straight people."
A Tony post I agree with!
And it wasn't just "where gay people didn't have to be around straight people." It was "where gay people didn't have to fear being murdered, or outed to their employers and fired."
And what you say about the "delicate nature" of these phonys is 100% true too.
Holy Fuck. A marginally sane person got on the Tony Sock-puppet and manages a clear, articulate and cogent post. I'm not religious, but this is surly one of the signs of the apocalypse !
He was still able to go Full Tony in his subsequent comments.
Dear Entitled Douchebag Student,
You are not my boss. I don't answer to you. I answer to my superiors. I'm not about to step down. If they want to fire me, they can feel free to do so, and good luck to them hiring a replacement after setting THAT precedent.
Cheers,
The Only Adult In The Room
So much this.
"As your position as master, it is your job to create a place of comfort and home for the students that live in Silliman."
Oh, *that's* my role as Master? I've been doing it wrong all this time - here, let me summon up some comfort for you.
If you don't feel safe, leave.
If they truly didn't feel safe, they would leave. The fact they they haven't is just further evidence that they're full of shit and are using this as an excuse to bludgeon someone they disagree with.
Do most of these "students" realize that outside of their enclave of Yale, New Haven can be quite the shit-show?
Pistol Wavin' New Haven yo.
This is Yale! Yale! An institution that used to poke fun at Harvard for being too pansy! We truly have lost the culture wars.
When Christakis replied that he didn't agree, the student thundered back, "Then why the fuck did you accept the position! Who the fuck hired you?"
Here's an idea... expel this prick. And then expel anyone who complains.
Agreed. No point in reasoning with people this nutty.
...but I'm sure that federal funding will guarantee this chick a catbird seat for 8-10 years there.
These campus warriors are pretty scary in that they clearly do not reason, and are vicious as hell. But the scary part is that many of these people will move into positions of power and influence, aided by their degrees from this cherished institution.
Not that I side with these safe space morons but a residential college is a dorm/home as they say. Some of the jobs of the master/masters (at my school both the husband and wife were masters, usually both faculty but someones only one) include mediating disputes between students at the college, listening to their concerns, etc. To some extent they are supposed to provide a "safe space" but more in the sense of management company for a landlord than what these bozos are asking for.
But the Christakises are absolutely right that their job is not to tell students what to wear (unless its things like don't walk into someone else's room naked uninvited).
"(unless its things like don't walk into someone else's room naked uninvited)."
Why do you hate fun?
why is he even addressing them? They're a clown show, and that's it.
And why do the Reason writers keep claiming referring to students in the colective sense as though large numbers of them support this jagaloonery? All this BS is driven by a tiny minority of students.
Those videos, combined with this thread, is just too much for me for me to handle right now. I need someone to hold me (appropriately) and tell me everything is going to be alright.
Sure.
Hey Tony! Need some snuggle help over here!
Make sure you stroke him slowly, he gets agitated easy.
what a bunch of fucking losers! LOL. Future leaders, my ass! Harvard isn't a college. It's a fucking day care center!
If the students at Yale want their administrators to change their diapers and burp them before tucking them into bed at night, then have at it. Young students who want to learn something in those years will find a way.
I thought of this when I read the story.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NyzQwwO4Os
So we're dealing with closeted homosexuals that do a lot of cocaine?
Whenever these stories come about, I am just so mystified by the behavior I am witnessing. I have curiosity. I want to find one of these students and just talk to them and ask them questions. I just want to have the tiniest sliver of understanding.
"Keeping these impressions in view, I was cautious in what I said before the young lady; for I could not be sure that she was sane; and, in fact, there was a certain restless brilliancy about her eyes which half led me to imagine she was not." --- Edgar Allan Poe
https://youtu.be/MuFOidNhGEU
These people are actually demanding to be slaves... I mean, they actually want people with power over their lives to tell them what to do, how to do it, when to do it, who to do it to...What the hell is wrong with them???
I have to say, I almost find this more depressing than police getting away with murder. I'm almost lost for words.
The stories are quite similar, at least in effect. The death of a person. The death of a worthy ideal. Collegiate safe spaces are where free speech goes to die.
Not necessarily without reason: police-committed homicides are declining; on that issue things have been improving for a while and continue to do so.
On the university free speech front, the trend is, as we might say scientifically, going monotonically right down the shitter.
We've trained these kids to believe that the world around them is responsible for their feelings, rather than their own thoughts. An entire generation of irrational thinkers. I feel like I'm watching a blip backward in evolution.
a pilb?
All speech of all kinds must be criminally suppressed I guess. Then what?
These kids must be progressive. They understand that every woman is just an emotional child who can't control her outbursts and needs a husband to keep her in line.
Christakis' email for anyone who'd like to show support:
nicholas.christakis@yale.edu
she's throwing a tantrum as a student of the most elite schools in the world and telling an administrator off while making an argument about how oppressed she is.
good god.
This is one of the things that destroys these shitheads' credibility. White privilege, male privilege, straight privilege, forgetting the matter of when or where or whether all of these even exist, there is little denying that Yale privilege and Harvard privilege trumps all of them.
If you're going to an Ivy league school, it doesn't matter what color or genitalia you have, you're privileged over and above most white males in this country.
Absolutely true...at least, ultrapriviledged until such antics on their own part destroy Yale's very reputation and devalue her own degree.
Then who will she shriek at?
It's the self-loathing of the ultra-privileged.
she's throwing a tantrum as a student of the most elite schools in the world and telling an administrator off while making an argument about how oppressed she is.
good god.
"It is not about creating an intellectual space! It is not! Do you understand that? It's about creating a home here!"
That's your problem, right there. People like that kid need to be knocked flat on their ass by the University. Kid can't handle the idea that school is for learning? Expulsion. Every one of those entitled brats should be expelled, or at the very least ignored.
The student should be expelled for yelling profanities at Christakis.
Sounds like a job for PC Principal. In earlier times, college students protested against wars, for sexual liberation, and against segregation. Today, they protest for /safe spaces/. What a fucked up generation.
In principle I'd be willing to support safe spaces.
In practice, I'm willing to support safe spaces to the exact same extent that the left-wing PC consensus is willing to support safe spaces for men, where men can gather, relax, speak frankly and crudely about various subjects, and put up artwork and photos of naked, sexually objectified women - and no one will do as much as frown or raise an eyebrow. But if such places (or the very idea of having them) get shot down as evil sources of "sexism, patriarchy, and rape culture" then I can't support having safe spaces for women or various minority groups, either.
"The whole world is a safe space for men" is the retort; never mind that the statistics well illustrate that the world is even less safe for men than for women.
Personally I would settle for not having to pay taxes to fund 'research' that seeks to demonstrate that I am inherently evil because of my testicles, and to make it easier to send me to prison for farting in the direction of a female or whatever they're complaining about now.
Allow me to introduce you to the even more interactive concept known as the strip club.
There are reasonable counter-responses to this kind of stuff. "White men are the real victims!" is not one of them.
"White men are the real victims!"
-Something curiously no one here except for you has ever said. You, Tony, are the only one who is contending that victimhood, or perpetrator-hood, are intricately associated with a particular race or gender. You are the racist and the sexist here. Just because your brand of bigotry is the kind that's fashionable today rather than the kind that was fashionable 50 years ago doesn't make it any less bigoted.
Happy I went to college in the 80's. I am not sure I could stand being around students today and their constant whining. Parents, you have raised a generation of pussies. God help us if we need to rely on them for anything of importance.
It is my humble opinion that if these students want to always feel safe and never have to suffer the indignities of dealing with others opinions they should commit mass suicide. Or if suicide offends them they can call it retroactive abortion. I know they believe in abortion. Progressive ideas have destroyed the family unit and created a generation that seek out ways to be offended. The world is filled with good and bad but mostly indifferent people so get over it. I use to be pro life but I am beginning to believe all Progressive Democrats and Progressive Republicans should be forced to abort their unholy offspring.
America's cultural revolution continues. Chairman Mao is having the time of his life in hell.
BTW, are there any decent STEM departments at Yale, or is it just one big reeducation camp?
These spoiled brats need to realize that the world does not revolve around them!! This Dean was MORE than understanding towards them and, in return , this brat disrespected him !!! She, along with all the other students there should be suspended!!! She threatened to transfer? PLEASE DO!! I cannot believe the nerve of these brats!! What kind of parents raise such spoiled entitled bitches? Parents have NO IDEA how to raise kids if this the end result!! The Dean should make a policy and crack the whip by saying any more disturbances like this and they will be suspended. These brats need a proverbial spanking. If students are going act like brats, then take away their right to demonstrate on school property. If they do it anyway, they should be suspended.
Yo YALEEEZZZZ......
Your FOREVER School Anthem is now....Linda Ronstadt's......POOR....POOR....PITIFUL ME.

Thank GOD....none of you WHINING WEASELS were around in the 40s....we'd all be wearing BROWNSHIRTS now
In 1854 English physician John Snow traced the severe Cholera epidemic in the Soho district to a single communal water pump. He had the pump handle removed and ended the epidemic.
I think we have found the source of the contamination of young minds in this country - The Educational System.
We need to remove the pump handle.
You know nothing John Snow! Well, except for how to end a cholera epidemic.
it's a "home"? I thought it was a college campus. I thought we sent these "skulls full of mush" to college to learn about the real world? What ever happened to realville anyway? go by the wayside to places like triggerzoneville and safespacecommunity. What is a micro aggression anyway? because this chick definitely seemed pretty aggressive with this tirade. I was offended. Where are my rights not to be offended, damn it?!!
These children don't want a safe space, they want a womb. And doggone it these little liberals wouldn't be safe there either.
They want to exercise power over others. Progressives are thugs.
I guarantee that not one of these students has the self-awareness to appreciate the enormous irony of demanding a "safe space" by the use of thug tactics.
Yale caved, even before this article was posted. Shameful but not surprising. There's a Wapo article that states they issued an apology to the students (won't let me post the link).
Somebody upthread owes me 20 bucks. Just donate to the Reason foundation and we'll call it square.
Correction, it looks like Yale caved on Thursday night.
Love watching the progressive theocracy eat its own.
You guys are missing the point.
The need for a safe space is simply a rationalization for the progressive herd to stomp people into the mud.
Progressives are thugs who have found that they can use the natural benevolence of people who don't wish to cause harm to other people to control them and make them dance like monkeys.
They are not delicate flowers. They are ruthless psychopaths pressing emotional buttons on others to control them.
The cries of feeling unsafe are simply weapons to cudgle others into submission.
Yes, the small minority of deranged students represents ALL progressives.
Get a grip.
Not all just a substantial percentage.
Where are you getting the idea that this is a 'small minority' of progressives? This is fucking MAINSTREAM progressivism right here. If it were a fringe, nobody would be talking about it. But this shit has reached epic proportions, and it is encouraged by progressive ideologues at every level.
Who cares whether they're a small minority?! They're the ones who dictate the policies and tone of the movement, and if this 'silent majority' is willing to sit around and shrug their shoulders, or worse, like Tony, actually deliver apologias for them, then I'd say they deserve to have their precious label tarnished.
I mean are you seriously going to tell me you don't go all out it mocking tea partiers and whatnot, calling them teabaggers and everything? And like you would have been at all moved by the argment that 'not all of them are like 'that'' whatever 'that' is?
This is absolutely right except for the part where you suggest its even possible that they are a small minority. The lunatic fringe is the center of gravity in the progressive movement.
I can't agree. All they're doing is proving to be a nuisance on campuses. They aren't rewriting law, either, only campus speech codes. They have little to do with progressivism off campus, for example, and its work to legalize gay marriage, to raise the minimum wage, to expand social insurance programs and especially health insurance...
Bernie Sanders ' proposals are far more representative of contemporary progressivism and he has never supported this kind of destructive hypersensitivity.
Fwiw, I distinguish this from rape crisis feminism and its attempts to destroy due process on campuses. That is a very different matter, and is cause for real concern especially as that harm to due process might move into the mainstream of criminal jurisprudence.
Well, they certainly represent mainstream progressive social justice theory.
Maybe students like these scum are the reason there is more and more campus shootings?
There is a simple way to stop these children for complaining.
"Oh you are not happy with our decision? Good, you are expelled for causing a disruption of learning to students who do not have a problem with how things are at this school. Good luck paying off your student loans with NO DEGREE and NO JOB as no one will hire you once you explain why you were expelled from college. Thank you for the money, now YOU FUCK OFF!"
Actually, can anyone tell me how to get ahold of the girl screaming the f-word in the video? Her use of vulgarity actually turns me on and I would love to rape her nigger ass. Because anal sex makes liberals happy.
Anyone knowing her identity and home address, please feel free to post it in a reply to me.
Smouches.
You aren't welcome here you sad piece of garbage. Try Stormfront, they'll love you there.
Reminds me Parker Posey's tantrum to Anne Meara in "The Daytrippers." Funny. Two pacifiers up!
So, let's make this place a home by screaming abuse at people who don't agree with us? Good work.
Who was that nasty little bitch, anyway? She deserves some free publicity in return.
A place of comfort and home for mindless collectivists? Izzat what Yale is now? Whatever happened to learning mathematics, chemistry and physics?
Whatever happened to learning mathematics, chemistry and physics?
The Math is too hard.
Their parents learned mathematics, chemistry and physics so they could study Print Making and French Literature.
Shhh... they are triggered by any mention of mathematics.
Wow, this is what our "Ivy League" colleges are cranking out, unstable people who can't tolerate free speech and need to have others enforce their whims? Clearly the girl in the video needs some type of intervention to help her understand the basics of the Constitution and treating others with respect.
I find this absolutely FRIGHTENING.
You must find a lot frightening, then. This is just a stupid kid having a tantrum in one of the safest locations on the planet.
I make up to $90 an hour working from my home. My story is that I quit working at Walmart to work online and with a little effort I easily bring in around $40h to $86h? Someone was good to me by sharing this link with me, so now i am hoping i could help someone else out there by sharing this link... Try it, you won't regret it!......

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go? to tech tab for work detail,,,,,,,

Wow, she has issues in the head! I would of thrown her off campus without a bus ticket. Typical uninformed NO class! Maybe she needs some conflict management classes and lots of therapy!!
I'm triggered by trigger warnings.
It's almost as if zombies have learned how to cry!
Sigh. College should be a place where you are free to express your ideas. They should try and keep you physically safe, but they are not your mommy and daddy. This girl shreaking and cursing is way out of line. This man expressed his opinion that people her age should be givena little leeway to learn when mistakes are made. If you get offended you do not make a valid point by then being offensive. I hope the school stands behind him. If she feels she is not "safe" or at "home" or being "comforted" then she can try another university. But the real world is waiting for her and I think she is in for a big surprise.
What about my right to be safe from vertical video?
I was there, at Yale, on Friday. Things are more surreal than you might imagine. My first hand account: http://thenakeddollar.blogspot.....roads.html
I think the good news is that we glibertarians have been accusing the campus culture to be one of rank leftism. It's destroying itself. Send your kids to community college or a trade school where they can get an education. Problem solved.
Im making over $9k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do,

Reminds me of the Cultural Revolution in China.
No kidding. Read the prologue of "The Three Body Problem" by Liu Cixin for a (fictional but realistic) example of such.
+1 Chairman Obamao
Many of the same people who were screaming "free speech" in the 60?s and 70?s are the ones now shutting it down. They only wanted radical speech? now those radicals ARE the establishment?.and they don't see the irony?
I know it's off topic, but our country is losing it's freedoms. We have Donald Sterling forced to sell his NBA team, free speech not allowed on PUBLIC campuses, etc. We have expensive health insurance forced on all of us. Even auto insurance is forced on us (thank god for $25/month Insurance Panda coverage). What's next? Mandatory phone insurance? We have taxes on top of taxes and our freedoms are slowly disappearing. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington would be rolling in their graves.
The tolerant liberals once again showing their fascist roots and their Socialist foundation of censorship of opposing views. They are a train wreck of destructive policies and childish finger pointing and are bent on the destruction of America.
Wouldn't a padded room or a cell with steel bars be an even safer space?
Nice negrotiating skills.
For those of us who love the scholastic arts, seeing events like this is like being trapped behind a Lexan barrier while a loved one is raped and slaughtered. You see it all in hideous detail, but are helpless to do anything.
Fooking Yalie twits. Smack 'em in the ass and tell the to get home.
Somebody needs their safe space penetrated.
If you have young kids, homeschool them and get them into non ivy-league schools, or encourage them to enter industry after high school. Within ten years, business will recognize that these university kids are unhireable rabble who are more interested in their political rectitude and emotional comfort than actually doing any sort of work.
Suck it up cupcake!! Israel has the right idea. Mandatory 2 year minimum hitch in the military. Help these crybabies get some thick skin!!
