John Kerry Wants Israel to Clarify 'Status Quo' in Jerusalem, Donald Trump Says He Could've Prevented 9/11 Attacks, Strange Star Could Be Sign of alien Life: A.M. Links
-
John Kerry rejected the idea of an international presence at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, which has been rocked by a series of assaults, mostly knife attacks, by Palestinians against Israelis. Instead, Kerry says Israel needs to "have clarity" on the status quo of the site, which Muslims also consider holy because of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Jews are allowed to visit the Temple Mount but not to pray there. Meanwhile, a shooting spree in Bersheeba left one Israeli usoldier dead, as well as the attacker, a Bedouin man, and an Eritrean bystander, who was beaten to death by a mob that mistook him for the shooter. Ten others, including four Israeli police officers, were also wounded in the shooting.

It’s just Venus.
Hello.
World to Israel: Explain why you got killed.
Everyone should check out the conjunction of Mars, Jupiter and Venus which is nicely placed in the SSE just before dawn.

Pulsars were once thought to be beacons from intelligent life too.
And can you prove they’re NOT?!
BWAHAHAHAHAAA!!
They’re evidence of the most OCD alien species in existence.
If they were, they would be the scariest possible beacon.
‘Hey you! Look what we did to this star – be a shame if the same thing happened to that nice one you live near, wouldn’t it?’

I always liked how they named the first one discovered “LGM-1” for “little green men”.

What the hell is Jeb Bush saying, his brother “kept America safe”? Huh?
Beside the 3000+ that died on 9/11 what about the 4500 military personnel who died in Iraq along with the 30,000+ injured? I’ll bet the families of those soldiers have something to say about that. Even Jeb admits we never should have gone to war with Iraq! Is Jeb living in a parallel universe I’m not aware of.
And what the hell is wrong with Trump to not throw these numbers at Jeb? Is Trump going soft on us?
I was looking forward to a pleasant lunch and afternoon drinking session in Chicago, accompanied by a few of the HnR regulars. In particular, I was curious to see if Nikki lived up to her image an both The Worst and an ENB favorite (not mutually exclusive!). The afternoon turned out to be a bit more exciting than I had originally anticipated…
First, things started badly. I hadn’t noticed on the venue’s website that they restrict entry to 21 and over. This was a big problem for my date, who didn’t have ID, which is not suprising because she’s still 8 years away from being eligible for a driver’s license. A $20 slipped to the doorman did not go over well, even after I promised him that my date wouldn’t drink, she just wanted to try the French Fries and see how they compared to her usual lunch, a Happy Meal. My pleas were to no avail, and I ended up having to turn her loose with a Blue Line pass and instructions on finding her way back home. Many tears were shed, and I ended up taking her doll away from her and warning that she would never see it again if she didn’t do exactly as I said.
It went downhill from there. Generic Brand showed up, chugged four 11% ales followed by a Sculpin chaser, then loudly accosted a group of people inexplicably wearing St. Louis Cardinals pajamas. “HEY YA FUCKIN’ LOSERS, DID YOU LOSE A BET?” I stepped back just in time to miss the first thrown punch, and pretty soon, Generic was rolling on the floor trading punches with one of the women. I yelled a few times, “GENERIC, STOP THAT, SHE’S 80 YEARS OLD, YOU’LL BREAK HER HIP!” And indeed, that’s exactly what happened. The bouncer arrived a few seconds too late, but I was happy to assist him, once Generic was escorted out, in carrying the poor old pajama-clad senior out to the curb where some passerby might be able to help her. The bouncer and I then retired to the very well-appointed men’s room, washed the stink of arthritis rub and soiled Depends off our hands, then apologized to one another for the earlier misunderstanding. This once again showed that people can put aside their differences and work together, even when they have sharp disagreements. With this between-us-guys truce in place, I poked my head out the door to see if my date had disobeyed me and stayed in the area. Alas, this is the once time that one of the little bastards actually listened, so it was apparent that I’d be going home alone later.
As I sipped at an excellent Belgian tripel, in walked a young woman with a startling resemblence to Morticia Addams. This, I thought, must be Nikki, and indeed, it proved to be true. She marched right over to our table, looked me up and down, and said, “I recognize you by the trench coat.” She smiled, sat down, and ordered a rather cheap domestic brew. We chatted about various goings on at HnR, her burgeoning career in Libertarian Tentacle Porn, and the performance of Jay Cutler. She empathized with my earlier difficulties (“I truly do love children, I’m so sorry to have missed meeting your no-doubt-lovely girlfriend”), which gave me a warmer feeling about her. Perhaps her reputation was exaggerated? The door of the bar opened and in walked a rather entitled looking dyed blond woman, expensively dressed, and accompanied by a small dog on a leash. As is so often the case, the little dog had on a vest marked “EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL,” which allowed it to be brought into the venue. I was, to be honest, rather amused, but I was quite unprepared for what happened next…
I had seen horror movies where a person’s eyes suddenly and literally glow red as a prelude to morphing into some sort of monster, but of course attributed this to the wonderful imagination of Hollywood horror films special effects guys. But when Nikki spotted the woman and the dog, I was startled to see that this happens in reality- her eyes glowed as two hot and angry coals, her lips pulled back into a rictus of pure hatred, and she leapt from her chair and, almost faster than the eye could follow, snatched the dog and tore its throat out with her teeth. I felt a bit bad that I had failed to notice that her teeth had been filed to sharp points, or perhaps they grew that way, hard to know for sure. In any case, as the blood spurted from the puppy’s torn throat, its heart pumping uselessly and destined to shortly cease, Nikki clamped on and started making sucking sounds. In a few seconds, the poor dog’s struggle abated, and it hung limply from Nikki’s jaws. All of this took place within two or three seconds, hardly time to react. When the blonde woman realized what had happened, she started screaming and wailing, grasping for the now still form of the dog. This was a mistake on her part, akin to trying to separate a bleeding raw steak from the mouth of a lioness in heat.
I will spare the details of what happened when Nikki spotted two grammatical errors on the menu.
In happier news, Mrs. Candy and I had a delightful time seeing Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt doing an acoustic show.
I will eventually recover from the horror of my Sunday.
I feel like I was there.
The most important part is that you survived.
Thank you for that poignant account. While it is weak tea compared to the writings of Sug, that is an impossibly high standard by which to be judged. Well-done.
I may have been to harsh on you last week. Your schtick is still creepy, but I’m coming to terms with that.
We mentioned you during one of our discussions. “Transgressive humor is not for everyone.”
What about transphobic humor? Does that still go over?
I…I…thank you. [sobs with joy]
You guys and your meet ups. I didn’t wanna go anyways.
*forlornly picks oatmeal pieces out of lucky charms*
Just throw the little fucker on the grill. Problem solved.
I tried explaining that to my wife, but couldn’t convey the flavor of the moment.
That was my Grandma…we’ll miss you Grannie, Cards will win next year!
The Department of Transportation is reportedly working on a plan to require all drone purchases be registered with the federal government.
The first step to drone confiscation.
They can pry the drone controller from my cold dead fingers.
How can they regulate something that you can buy all the components of and build on your own, or is this that cute kind of “regulation” like the completely unenforceable one on building firearms, except with even less ability to enforce since the components are cheaper and more affordable than a CnC machine and can be built completely from scratch
How can they regulate it? Easy. They say, “It is regulated and they must be registered.”
Then, they win.
A) You pay an annual fee to keep it registered.
B) If you don’t register your drone, and they find out, pay a bigger fee and probably lose your drone.
C) They have complete control to demand that any drone be landed immediately so they can check the registration. Much like car registration, it is a reason for the cops to speak to anyone about anything because “They had reports of unregistered drones in the area.”
“They have complete control to demand that any drone be landed immediately so they can check the registration.”
Except most camera drones aren’t going to be flown by somebody standing around, looking at the sky, and twiddling their thumbs, they’re going to be programmed to fly a series of GPS waypoints and then land. So if they see a drone fly by, it’s going to be hard to tell who launched it, where it came from and where it’s going. And it’s pretty hard to chase, since it’s A) small, B) not flying high, and C) following roads.
And then the next thing to happen that is going to frustrate the hell out of the feds is drones are going to get a lot smaller. There are already palm-sized quadcopters — I’ll be it won’t be long before drones that size are shooting pro-quality stabilized video.
‘You must register all drones’ – there done.
‘FREEZE CRIMINAL SCUM! Let me see your drone license. EASY! Slow movements or I’ll fill you so full of fucking lead the motherfucking coronor’ll think you’re a pencil.’
‘But this isn’t a drone!’ you say? Who fucking cares? Pay the fine or go to jail.
Drone and Moose.

The ‘Rocky and Bullwinkle Show’ reboot was worse received than the ‘Muppet Show’ remake. Nobody liked the ‘moose and dvone’ joke.
Libertarian moment.
A star observed by the Kepler Telescope has an anomalous light pattern that could be a sign of alien life.
They just got the “clapper” now? Not interested.
Looks like the start of a Dyson Sphere possibly, or a series of comets that just happen to get snagged into a tightly formed orbit around the parent star, which would beg the question as to why they haven’t coalesced into a planetoid object instead as gravitational forces tend to do that to things sharing a tight orbit around a massive gravity well.
If a species is capable of building a massive structure like that they likely have figured out how to harness the energy output of their parent star.
In another note the Libertarian magazine feels completely content to ignore the LP primary for yet another day, while speculating on the light output of a star 1500 LY away.
One of these things has more potential bearing on planet earth than the other.
In another note the Libertarian magazine
This is a magazine that covers libertarian issues (Free Markets, Free Minds) but it is not THE Libertarian magazine.
What is this Primary of which. you speak? There is no such thing in the LP of which I am aware. Last I checked the convention picked candidates from a random bag of people who wear unmatched socks and fairy wings. Then these selections must face off in a dodecahedron until there is only one left which is the purist of them all…regardless of how libertarian their views are or are not ironically. The formal nominating ceremony is, of course, pelting the nominee with day old ramen noodles while chanting loudly that Thomas Jefferson was more pure than John Adams. Ahh, I miss the smell of self importance and the unrepentant gaze of Donderroooooo.
Keep in mind, I will never soil my browser history with the likes of IPR so don’t bother sending a link to it.
Heh.
Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump says he would’ve been able to prevent 9/11 because he’s “extremely tough on immigration.”
He’d make Al-Qaeda pay for a new World Trade Center, a better one.
The number of migrants arrested trying to enter Hungary has dropped from more than 6,000 on Friday to 41 on Sunday after the completion of a border fence.
That’s ‘uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge.
This is impossible, open borders types have assured me that the fence industry was a fraud.
Give them time, they’ll figure out how to make holes in the fence.
Give them time, they’ll figure out how to make holes in the fence.
Indeed they will, unless/until the Euros start making holes in them.
I wonder how many guards are stationed along it. This impression they’re giving us where you just throw up a simple fence – and *poof* no more migrants – is fantasy.
Again, if you are willing to shoot anyone attempting to cross a fence and you have enough people stationed along the fence to do so then you can have a success ration near 95% (this is often referred to as “a front line”)…But even East Germany had escapes. My favorite was the one where the two family built a fucking hot air balloon out of taffeta or silk or something and flew it at night…holy shit that is awesome.
Oh absolutely. I have always said that the only way a border fence will work is if you go whole hog. Anything else is just theater.
You know who else…
Sanders planning ‘major speech’ on democratic socialism, he tells Iowa supporters
Maybe he’ll finally tell the middle class and lower classes that his philosophy requires inflicting a crushing tax burden on them in addition to the reviled 1%.
I’m wondering if he will be that stupid. However, he will probably be stupid enough to admit it when asked followup questions.
They must be allowing him to continue only because he makes Clinton look like a sane adult by comparison.
To some supporters, that won’t matter. They look at paying taxes, and in fact increasing them, as their duty.
And yet oddly, they rarely pay taxes, on net.
Obama promised to raise everyone’s energy prices, and his dumbass still got elected. The supporters of these idiots don’t actually care about the issues. It’s all about the celebrity.
On This Week he told stepho that was a lie. A tax on the 1% and wall street speculation would pay for his programs of free college education, medicare for all and increasing social security benefits.
Yeah, if that’s the case, he’s a liar. I checked Denmark’s marginal rates and their top rate, around 60%, kicks in at about $60K/year. There’s no way to do it in the US without something very similar.
Bernie Sanders’s Denmark Comments Show He Doesn’t Even Understand His Own ‘Socialism’
Huh? High middle class taxes, low corporate taxes, minimal business and banking (GASP!!) regulations and no statutory minimum wage. Funny, none of that ever makes it into the stump speeches.
Fuck balls.
Do that have a VAT on top of that?
VAT is 25% I think. Might explain Denmarks global highest household debt ratio
Tell us how awesome Europe is Bernie. I love that story. Sweden, Greece, Spain, Italy, everything is so great there. Maybe throw in Argentina as another example of the good things possible.
Dont forget the paradise of Venezuela!
He should give up on the Dems, and start a new party.
A party of his own.
A National party. Y’know, a party that’s really for the workers.
And since he’s so into European ideas, maybe he could name it in another language. Spanish is too overdone – how about German?
I mean honestly, who wants to be associated with a donkey? The GOP elephant is pretty cool, but y’know what’s really American? Bald fuckin’ Eagles.
The National Social Democrat Workers Party, with a big eagle as it’s symbol? Oh yeah, that sounds like a winner to me!
ACLU sues two psychologists who designed CIA torture methods
Two former military psychologists who played a significant role in developing a U.S. interrogation program described by some opponents as tantamount to torture were never charged with any crime.
But in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in Washington state, the American Civil Liberties Union seeks to hold the pair civilly responsible for what the civil rights organization describes in its complaint as a “war crime” and a “joint criminal enterprise” in which the CIA also allegedly colluded, reports the Guardian.

Gun designers are next for our champions of freedom.
Meh, torture has no self defense uses = fuck those shrinks, I hope the process treats them the same as that which they designed.
Africans reject UN climate deal
Nope, not an excuse for global redistribution of wealth. Not at all.
“crosses the group’s red lines.”
You know who else….
“Group spokesman Seyni Nafo said the African countries want more emphasis on financial support to help poor countries cope with climate change.”
Free money please.
Still cheaper than the USA’s gulag.
“Group spokesman Seyni Nafo said the African countries want more emphasis on financial support to help poor countries cope with climate change.”
Well bless their little pea picking hearts.
The Department of Transportation is reportedly working on a plan to require all drone purchases be registered with the federal government.
Don’t worry, robots, these numbers will never be used as a national identifier.
…and an Eritrean bystander, who was beaten to death by a mob that mistook him for the shooter. Ten
Well, at least they did something.
Punishing an innocent black guy? Was it a group of American police/prosecutors on vacation to the Holy Land?
“Those shvartzes all look alike.”
Just like Joe Biden’s narcotics bills.
Kevin Williamson: Using Biden to Block the Clintons from Regaining the White House
No, Senator McCain most certainly was not.
Well, after he threw away his lead to run back to DC and do exactly what 70% of his base didn’t want him to do, anyway.
The number of migrants arrested trying to enter Hungary has dropped from more than 6,000 on Friday to 41 on Sunday after the completion of a border fence.
I would think just providing a hearty snack at the border would stop people from entering Hungary.
mic drop
Great. So now they trapped them all inside Hungary.
Swiss? Seriously? Nothing here?
Our heroes in blue get a rave review.
http://www.minnpost.com/politi…..eapolis-po
Oh, wait. It is actually a nice write up of how bad some of the fuckers are. Of course, the muck rakers fail to post a pic of any of the problem pigs.
Also kudos to some judges for actually throwing cases out of court. Too bad they don’t then recommend that the city attorney file charges against cops for lying on warrant applications.
I believe that as long as the cops claim that they lied in good faith (and they always do), then they’re covered by qualified immunity.
“An ambulance arrived, which Gaten thought was for him, but was actually for one of the officers, who had hurt his back during the struggle.”
Bake ’em away, toys.
I got a couple paragraphs in and then closed that tab. I’ve read this story a thousand times by now. Cops are systemically abusing people and literally getting away with murder and other crimes. Then some interview subjects and/or the author offer the “few bad apples” theory of police misconduct. The End.
If those cops had only collected the evidence in a legal manner, then that poor prosecutor would have a better conviction record.
The integrity of our Law and Order institutions can be preserved if only we [insert useless social justice platitude here].
General Mills to release 10 boxes of marshmallow-only Lucky Charms
Bring back Country Corn Flakes.
Tired of plucking all the marshmallows out of your Lucky Charms cereal?
Why would anyone do this? They’re the best part!
Tired of plucking all the marshmallows out of your shag carpet?
So they are offering ten boxes of candy in cereal boxes?
Shall Duncan Jones offer a cake that is all frosting?
yes! / 3 year old me
Duncan who?

Isn’t that David Bowie’s son who directed Moon?
Fuck JEB!
To my fellow Canadians (and curious Americans) I have a baaaaad feeling about tonight.
I don’t know if I can handle a government run by an inexperienced, sophomoric drama boy.
He’s Obama light and this concerns me.
Same here, especially with some of the proposals he’s made. Frankly, I’ve disagreed with the Conservative Party’s advertising, in that I don’t think someone like Trudeau will ever be “ready”.
At least Mulcair is an adult who opposes C-51. Trudeau is just a stupid vapid asshole.
I can’t believe Canadians are this stupid. I’m looking straight at you Ontario. Yeah you. FUCK YOU.
Fuck Ontario and their bland population of lemming-sheep hybrids. “Our deficits forever model failed so lets export it to the rest of the country”. Even Quebec is wising up. At least they have some interesting aspects to their province.
That’s why I’m voting Libertarian, or spoiling my ballot if there’s no LP candidate.
I love that the sum total of the last 3 years of our stupid authoritarian asshole PM’s legacy is quite possibly Prime Minister Trudeau. Good job conservatives, you fucked it all up yet again. So much for ‘Harper is shifting Canada to the Right’. More like shitting away the fight.
You shouldn’t but hey. Chacun sont gout…
Mike Myers: Actor and John Oliver Ask Canadians Not to Vote for Stephen Harper on ‘Last Week Tonight’
I would punch the both of them if I saw them.
And I wouldn’t tell Oliver to suck my dick. That boring, predictable dumbass progressive spazz ball doesn’t deserve it.
Oliver is proof that us dummies hear a brit accent and think that what he is saying must be smart.
His ranting about how dumb the NoDaks are for profiting from the Bakken oil fields is especially dumb. Why do those rubes like all that money?
“We’re friends, right? You respect me? Well, get ready to stop.”
Nobody watching that show would vote Conservative. It’s pointless on all sides.
Is there a decent choice in Canada? Your candidates are possibly worse than ours.
Harper is the best option one in my view.
He’s a bit of a control freak sure but he’s a superior politician and speaker.
He’s an authoritarian asshole who is turning Canada into a slave state.
Libertarian is the only good option.
“slave” is a weird typo for surveillance. John’s influence lingers…
No John’s influence LOOMS!
He’s now in the same bind as Dave Foley.
Let me guess though: He has come out against corporate money influencing elections while holding HBO’s microphone.
^THIS X 1000
Is there something going on in Canada today?
“Obama light”? How does he not float away?
How does he not scream into the stratosphere like a negative meteor?
That “Stalin’s Prosecutor” thread is pretty astonishing. American Derpulist once again runs to Stalin’s defense.
Pretty amazing, yeah. The guy is a blind dick.
His lacks humanism because it’s attached to his bankrupted socialist ideals.
No person with a proper intellectual and moral compass would even bother to defend such monsters of history.
And then there are progressives….
He only defends Stalin because Soso reflects badly on communism in general.
*sad face*
Rand Paul’s sad campaign into obscurity in New Hampshire
So, here he was, back on the trail in New Hampshire, where he sometimes stared at the beautiful wood floor below him as he shuffled his well-worn brown shoes like an awkward kid at a middle school dance.
When people handed him books to sign, his eyes darted around the room as if searching for the nearest exit. Not that Paul wasn’t more than happy to sign but he signed them in the most delicate fashion, seeming to genuinely care about the person he is dedicating it to.
Paul’s adoring fans are also the sort who loyally backed his father during his quixotic 2008 and 2012 presidential runs. They’re almost entirely libertarians and are hell-bent on limiting the size of government and expanding liberty.
They like the Younger Paul, but he hasn’t inspired the run-through-the-wall enthusiasm that existed here for his father. With the exception of a Fusion TV video camera in the corner, the event felt more like a large libertarian book club than a campaign event.
As the event started to wind down, Paul concluded his discussion on the differences between a democratic republic and a direct democracy. The audience, dressed for fall in New England, nodded in agreement as Paul wraps up.
“Thanks guys,” he told his gathered fans before he let out a noticeable sigh of relief.
He needs to just pack it in. Stick to the Senate where he can do plenty of good.
Good thing he made attacking Trump the centerpiece of his campaign in the run up to the last debate.
Stop lying.
As he prepares to take the stage Wednesday for the second televised Republican presidential debate, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is making it clear he wants to use the airtime to go after Donald Trump again.
“I think he deserves both barrels,” Paul said in a Tuesday afternoon interview with The Daily Caller. “I want to make sure everyone in the whole country knows he’s a fake conservative.”
Paul went on offense against Trump harder than any other Republican in last month’s Fox News debate. But despite the attacks, Trump’s numbers have only gotten stronger while Paul’s have faded.
Previewing his argument against the New York businessman at Wednesday’s Reagan Library debate in California, Paul said voters just need more time to learn about Trump’s past positions: “I think ultimately when voters fully grasp who he is and what he supports, I think they’ll run away with their hair on fire”
How’d that work out for ya, Rand?
Still not the center piece of his campaign.
He should have gone after Trump much harder.
It was the focus of all his media coverage leading up to the debate.
Yeah, he totally should have gone after him harder, maybe he’d be completely out by now if he had.
OMG he criticized the front runner! HOW UNORTHODOX
I want to hug him!
And then suck his blood out?
Maybe…
Don’t be silly, Rand Paul doesn’t have blood, that’s hydrolic fluid to move his limbs.
It’s delicious, whatever it is.
Police: Man wiped summons ‘between his butt cheeks’
That piece of paper is an agent of the state and reserves respect just like a police dog.
Serious question: Did the man drop trou first? If he was fully clothed during the purported wiping, there’s gonna be a lot of “throwing bodily fluids” charges.
Right, this should just be an assault charge. Or attempted assault.
It shouldn’t even be that.
It should be a littering charge at most.
‘pick up that paper.’

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump says he would’ve been able to prevent 9/11 because he’s “extremely tough on immigration.”
Then who would then prosecutor and now New Jersey Democrat Chris Christie have hugged?
Well, he’s a widely-despised loudmouth narcissistic blowhard that likes nothing better than the sound of his own voice and despite what he says he believes politically the truth is that he doesn’t believe in anything but himself. He flies around in his big jet with his logo prominently on the side hobnobbing with his rich, fatcat New York donors and – let’s just come out and say it- despite his obvious gift for self-promotion he’s just not very bright or intellectually curious. And the thought of that ego-maniac sitting behind the desk of the President of the United States of America just fills people with shame.
But enough about Barack Obama, let’s talk about Donald Trump!

No one likes a tattle-tale
A prolific informant who could potentially testify in nearly two dozen Florida criminal cases says he gets fellow inmates to confess by offering his services as a jailhouse lawyer.
But in fact Frederick Cobia, who claims to have inside knowledge in 23 cases, learns details by reading Palm Beach County cellmates’ legal files when they are asleep, a lawyer for another defendant contends.

Depending on how he does it, that’s probably a crime right there. In most states, you’re not allowed to hold yourself out as a lawyer unless you have a license.
McDonald’s franchisees say the brand is in a ‘deep depression’ and ‘facing its final days’
a shift to digital ordering kiosks ? is a distraction from the core issues of McDonald’s, like food quality and customer service.
Interacting with fewer people would help customer service I think.
is a distraction from the core issues of McDonald’s, like food quality and customer service.
A rising minimum wage has incentivized the company to find ways to save on labor. As a result the food quality has gone to shit. Which serves them right. I mean, if they can’t make good food without paying a living wage to their employees, then they don’t deserve to be in business. Social justice now!

Do American Millennials Make Bad Employees?
That’s why we need mass immigration so badly.
Wait, I thought we needed more low and no-skill laborers to fill the dire shortage? Turns out we have an oversupply right here at home! Great news!
You can never have an oversupply of competition!
The problem is they think they are high skilled and no skill work is beneath them.
But their self-esteem is great!

Kerry says Israel needs to “have clarity” on the status quo of the site, which Muslims also consider holy because of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Simple. If the site is more holy for the Jews, they get it. “Third most holy site” rings hollow.
Of course, being the *zeroeth* most holy site in Tarvuism may cause problems.
Funny how they abandoned their most holy site for centuries, leaving only a few thousand hardcore believers in Palestine until 1945.
Have you ever seen Larry Miller’s essay about this?
Oops, forgot the link.
Palestine
I started reading that but it got incoherent real quick.
I’ve often thought that. It’s pretty much the holy site for Jews.
The only reason Muslims care about Temple Mount is because of an exceedingly large leap in interpreting the Koran, which states that Mohammed went to the ‘furthest city’ to begin his ascent to heaven. Somehow this meant, without a doubt, Jerusalem.
As opposed to, say, Papeete.
Copan or Tikal sound like better candidates for furthest city than Jerusalem.
Or maybe Tiwanaku.

Swiss Right Makes Gains in Election
Concerns about immigration play to populist Swiss People’s Party’s favor
Do they have narrow eyes?
Stop being lacist!
Well their central bank may be financially repressing the hell out of them with negative rates and their government might be selling out on financial privacy, but FOREIGNERS. Good to know the Swiss can be as retarded as anybody.
Right because immigration is always good for everyone, regardless of the character of the immigrants and the host society.
Yes it is. That’s how a FREE SOCIETY works.
You don’t know the first thing about a free society you armchair warrior. You just walk blindly into absolutist claims that cannot conceivably been true. A mere anecdote is enough to to obliterate your argument.
Oh well please don’t leave us hanging. I can’t wait to hear that anecdote! And the explanation of how that anecdote somehow constitutes evidence.
The solution is simple. We insert an exploding chip into the neck of every foreigner entering the country. The chip will be removed when they leave. If they don’t eave when their visa expires…

Wal-Mart puts the squeeze on suppliers to share its pain as earnings sag
Or tell WalMart to fuck off and focus on other distribution channels.
We’ll be losing a dollar on every sale but we’ll make it up in volume!
My uncle worked for Coke. Wal Mart would routinely stiff them. They’d agree on a price for a certain shipment, then WM would pay them what they wanted. Coke would sometimes hit back by delivering less than they agreed on and so forth. It was all really childish. In my eyes, WM needs Coke more than Coke needs WM. If people can’t find Coke at WM they’ll go somewhere else to buy it. And they will buy it, just not from WM.
Anecdotally-ish, I’ve heard that when Wal-Mart comes a-knockin’ to most smaller suppliers, they require a pretty big build-out of capacity. Once the supplier is invested in that, dropping Wal-Mart means the capacity sits idle, and they go bankrupt.
Charity event.

Yeah, totally insensitive and offensive. But a great reply from the organizer. We need more simple explanations like “I don’t know what’s best for other people,” and “MYOB,” instead of long didactic arguments from principle.
I’m simply commenting on observed behavior and attitudes, not justifying that.
But, yes, in 2015 America ADP’s feel they “own” the concept of slavery, or at least the moral high ground on that and they are actively enabled by progressives and passively enabled by most of the rest of society who don’t want to be called racist. In their minds, yes, they are the only people to have ever been enslaved. Or, if you corner them, American slavery was totally the worst ever.
Also, I think American slavery is more tangible than that in other times and places because we still have a lot of records of what people owned slaves and even some pictures of slaves.
the greatest failing of Europeans historically was their highly developed moral philosophy
Uh no. You can’t have a moral society without that.

The 5 Cheapest States to Live In
Spoiler: #1 is Mississippi.
If you call that living.
I have a question that some people here may be able to help out with. It’s a non-political science question.
There is a gap in my understanding with regards to Carbon 14.
Because radiocarbon dating works, I know what all living things must have a known ratio of C-14 in them when they die, or the rate of decay of C-14 wouldn’t help.
This must mean that within the biosphere, the ratio of C-14 remains fairly constant. To counteract the decay, there would have to be a source of new C-14 in the biosphere, or all C-14 planetwide would be going down, rendering carbon dating useless.
What is the source of this ‘new’ C-14?
Cosmic rays.
Can you be more specific about the mechanism in question?
Nitrogen atoms absorb neutrons which are either created by or part of cosmic rays.
They interact with a certain Nitrogen isotope in the atmosphere and convert it to C14.
Thank you both. It bugged me and I knew at least one or more person around H&R might know the answer.
Bonus fact: cosmic rays are not EM radiation. They are actually little pieces of matter (neutrons and protons) zapping about the universe at high velocity. Probably from supernovae.
Bonus fact: At those energies the line between ‘particle’ and ‘EM’ is . . . blurry, at best.
Basically, the flux of cosmic rays hitting the upper atmosphere has a small portion of neutrons. Occasionally a neutron collides with a nucleus of a nitrogen atom and is absorbed. the resultant nucleus is unstable and instantly emits a proton resulting in a transmutation of Nitrogen into Carbon. The most common isotope of nitrogen in the earth’s atmosphere is N-14, so the result is that the cosmic ray flux is producing a significant amount of C-14 every year.
Now, that C-14 travels around participating in normal Carbon based chemistry (albeit being somewhat heavier than the more abundant C-12 that is the normal isotope of C). Since C-14 is slightly unstable (half life of 5,000 years meaning that in 5,000 years, only half of the C-14 atoms presently in the atmosphere will still be around; the others will decay by emitting beta particles back to N-14.
Since C-14 is only being created in the upper atmosphere, it’s a great way of dating something to the time it approximately died. While alive, the assumption is that it is absorbing C from its environment, and thus has the same C-14/C-12 ratio as is in the atmosphere. After it dies, it no longer is absorbing carbon, and the C-14’s decay becomes the only process affecting the ratio. The longer ago it died, the lower the ratio.
the resultant nucleus is unstable and instantly emits a proton
I think you mean to say it emits an electron (Beta particle).
WE NERD GOOD
No, I think N-14 absorbs a neutron, becomes N-15, then immediately emits a proton to become C-14. Then C-14 back to N-14 by beta decay.
So you’re right. I had always thought there was only beta and alpha particles.
Spikes in C14 production make dating complicated.
Carbon-14 is produced in the upper layers of the troposphere and the stratosphere by thermal neutrons absorbed by nitrogen atoms.
Carbon-14 decays into nitrogen-14 through beta decay.
Radiation from the sun produces C-14 from CO2 in the atmosphere.
I think it is a mistake to assume that the amount of C-14 produced is fixed as the sun does not produce a fixed amount of radiation over time.
But that is just me. I am also a dirty AGW denier.
A star observed by the Kepler Telescope has an anomalous light pattern that could be a sign of alien life.
If Trump, Clinton or Sanders wins, I’ll be the first one to volunteer contacting them.
If President Trump hears there’s an alien civilization out there, the first thing he’s going to do is try to build a wall to keep them out.
the first thing he’s going to do is try to build a wall to keep them out.
So we’ll get our own Dyson Sphere (undoubtedly with a garish Trump logo, but still).
If President Hillary hears there’s an alien civilization out there, the first thing she’ll do is hit ’em up for a donation to the Clinton Foundation.
If President Sanders hears there’s an alien civilization out there, the first thing he’ll do is raise the minimum wage on Cygnus X to $15 an hour.
If President Biden hears there’s an alien civilization out there, the first thing he’s going to do is touch them in a way that’s meant to be friendly but really just makes everybody uncomfortable.
If President Paul hears there’s an alien civilization out there, oh who am i kidding!
“A star observed by the Kepler Telescope has an anomalous light pattern that could be a sign of alien life.”
Excellent example of how our present situation colors everything we see.
The standard explanation is that it’s an unusually large collection of comets, but the alien civilization explanation is that it’s a large solar array an alien civilization built as a solution to global warming.
“But as the cometary explanation is not fully satisfying, lead author Tabetha Boyajian of Yale consulted with Jason Wright, an astrophysicist with Penn State University, who had studied ways to detect potential extraterrestrial constructions.
Wright posited that the dips in flux from the star might be due to an alien Dyson sphere. Dyson spheres, of Star Trek fame, are massive, hypothetical constructs built around a star to collect its energy through millions of solar panels.
“Aliens should always be the very last hypothesis you consider,” Wright told The Atlantic. “But this looked like something you would expect an alien civilization to build.”
http://arstechnica.com/science…..ars-light/
That’s where scientists’ heads are these days. Back in the early 1980s, they might have speculated it could be a Strategic Defense Initiative array to take out communist ICBMs.
Of course, the Fox News website doesn’t even mention the global warming explanation–because that’s where their heads are these days.
Where do you get global warming from? The point of a hypothetical Dyson sphere is usually to collect all the energy from a star to power your fabulous technology. Presumably by the time you get there, you have a technical solution to environmental problems.
I doubt it’s really much to do with where scientists’ heads are today. It’s an interesting speculation, but I would be very surprised if many scientists are spending much time considering the alien explanation. But it makes a good, short news piece and gets attention.
Yeah, I’m sure that solutions to global warming never even occurred to anyone reading that an alien civilization might be getting all the CO2 free energy they want from a massive solar array around a star?
And Fox never even mentioning that the alien angle is about how it might be a solar array, that’s probably just a coincidence?
I don’t even have to look–there’s a progressive site out there somewhere writing up this story as though aliens may have solved the problem of global warming.
Yeah, it’s a news piece that gets attention–and people are using it to confirm their own biases. This is how people’s views of “science” get colored in. Our present situation colors what we see.
I’ve just never heard the global warning angle mentioned at all. I’d think that once you are the the point of development where you are using that much energy and are capable of building such a thing, you would have long ago solved or innovated out of little environmental problems.
Solar power now is alternative energy, but when you are talking about that much power, it’s really the only available source than anyone understands well. All the fossil fuels and fissile isotopes on a planet would be nothing compared to what you get from a Dyson sphere. That was always the thought behind the idea. Nothing to do with the goodness and cleanness of solar power.
RENEWABBLEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!
Though actually, when absorbing that much energy you still get global warming – you still need to get rid of the heat that is the waste product of energy use.
Yeah, that too. Which is why I can’t imagine any civilization that gets to that level of development wouldn’t already have engineered themselves out of any environmental/conservation problems and abandoned the precautionary principle. If you can build a shell around a star, you can engineer a planet to be livable in any way you want.
Perhaps I underestimate the obsession that some people have with CO2 and their lack of imagination. But it seems obvious to me that a civilization building anything on that scale will have moved past burning stuff for energy long ago.
Look man, *earthquakes* have been blamed on global warming.
*Syria* is, RIGHT NOW, being blamed on global warming.
There is no disaster, great or small, that global warming is either causing or making worse.
And ultimately, so the ranting goes, humans must acknowledge responsibility and be held to account.
I read about such a thing – the hypothetical Dyson sphere – in 1980, via Carl Sagan’s Cosmos. eg, a really advanced civilization would be doing engineering at a planetary scale, in one case a massive solar array built around a star.
“But this looked like something you would expect an alien civilization to build.”

George W. Bush’s military lies: The real story about the undeniable service gaps he got away with

Are they seriously arguing that those memos weren’t fake? Like serious serious?
Was Salon taken over by The Onion while I wasn’t looking?
“Was Salon taken over by The Onion while I wasn’t looking?”
Salon has not achieved that level of journalistic seriousness and integrity yet.
There’s a major publicity campaign going on now to the effect that Mapes and Rather were noble truth tellers brought down by a vast right wing conspiracy.
Mapes was just cleansing the way between them.
I think they’re arguing that those memos are ‘fake, but accurate’.
Though the real question is – what difference, at this point, does it make?
We’re talking about the possible misconduct during the Vietnam War by a man who was last in office 6 years ago and will never hold an influential public position again. Any harm he’s done – has been done.
If Benghazi is ‘old news’, if the fucking *server scandal* is ‘not important’, what does that make this?
The authenticity of the memos was challenged almost immediately, and many (probably most) people assume they were quickly shown to be fakes. But this is not the case: their authenticity was easily placed in doubt, but nothing more. The “independent” investigation CBS initiated could not say if the memos were authentic or not.
I assume Salon is still holding out for solid evidence on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion as well.
No, their writers are absolutely convinced of their authenticity.
Even CBS has disavowed Truth and refuses to air ads for it.

More than a dozen franchisees expressed frustration with McDonald’s management, saying that CEO Steve Easterbrook’s turnaround plan ? which includes initiatives like all-day breakfast and a shift to digital ordering kiosks ? is a distraction from the core issues of McDonald’s, like food quality and customer service.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t these things over which the franchisees have direct control?
Only up to a point. I believe they have to buy their supplies from McDonalds corporate (or an approved vendor which amounts to the same thing in terms of their ability to control quality of ingredients). Now, the franchisee can mis-handle and poorly prepare the food (and risk disenfranchisement), or the franchisee can prepare the food to standard, but they can’t make it above standard.
“They’re called McDONALD’S, we’re called McDOWELL’S. They have the Golden Arches, we have the Golden Arcs.”
I decided to crunch some numbers on deaths in US wars. I took my numbers from here.
-About 1 million total deaths
-765k deaths from WW2 and the Civil War
-574k battle deaths
-Army accounts for 86% of battle deaths
-Navy and USMC battle deaths about 7% each
-Air Force negligible unless counted with its predecessor, the Army Air Corps
-battle death rate for Army and USMC about the same at 2%; for the Navy, about 0.5%
-During Vietnam, battle death rate for USMC was twice that of the Army
-Battle death rates for Army and USMC for Vietnam was half that of WW2
I need the numbers for the War on Womyn, please.
And battlefield medicine is hugely better today than during the Vietnam war.
During the Civil War, there were more disease deaths than battle deaths.
Fun fact: the Merchant Marine had a higher death rate during WW2 than any branch of the military

And the funny thing is, much of their debt is just to get by. It isn’t stuff like cars (which cost more than double what the same car costs here), homes, etc. It’s just for basics.
Forget about even owning a decent sized family home. They also have fewer children, but that is pretty much standard across Europe amongst native Europeans. Only immigrants are having many children. Europe’s native population growth is negative. They are having fewer children than the replacement rate. Much of that probably has to do with high taxes and cost of living because of all the wonderful socialized shit.

It is capitalism and those who manage it that have killed hundreds of millions.
It goes without saying that there has never existed a True Scotsman Real Socialist.
It also includes a handy-dandy graphic of “right wing capitalism” – USA, versus “left-wing capitalism” Venezuela
I suppose under their rather broad definition of capitalism (which seems to include every communist and socialist country so far), it has killed many people, though most of the killing was by self identified socialists of one type or other.
It is capitalism and those who manage it that have killed hundreds of millions.
Except that capitalism is not managed in the sense that a planned economy is managed. That right there shows a total misunderstanding of the nature of free markets. I assume he means those evil corporations, except that all a corporation manages it its own affairs. It doesn’t manage its customers or competition. What an idiot.
So many people just can’t accept that there is the possibility of not having a system where someone (or some group) is in charge.
I suppose that depending on how you define it, capitalism could be a system. But if you just mean a free market, then it’s just people doing what they naturally do and not a system in the sense that other, managed economic systems are.
Got visited by a Jehovah yesterday. He asked my my views on creationism, and I asked if he’d ever heard the essay “I Pencil.” He hadn’t, so I summarized it for him. I then said my belief on life, the universe and everything is spontaneity. If no one mind can create something as simple as a pencil, how could one mind create something as complex as life? Then he started insisting that someone in the end created the pencil, which isn’t true. Someone operated a machine that assembled parts that came in from all over the place. When he continued to insist that the pencil was created by someone, I politely ended the conversation.

Yeah capitalism just is. It describes markets that naturally occur.
Saying capitalism is a failed mechanism is like saying evolution is a failed mechanism because you don’t like the results.
The thing that bothers me most about politics is how many people talk about socialism and whatever other form of statist collectivism as if there were just a morally neutral choice to be made between the various systems, and that free market capitalism is just another in the list of choices. As if violence and coercion shouldn’t be considered at all.

OK. There’s always someone who likes publicity more than doing good science.
I’m not saying that to be flippant. Just telling you, there are a lot of “actual scientists” that push all kinds of dumb shit that they don’t have the data to backup. Like climate science for example.
climate scientists*
Outside of a few highly politicized fields, I think that the people pushing the poorly supported dumb shit are well outnumbered by those who actually want to do science. I suppose some might claim that in physics and cosmology, some theorists are pushing too far beyond experiment to really be called science, but for the most part those people will admit that their theory is highly speculative and may well never be supported by direct evidence.
“social science”, with it’s malleable data is the natural home for pseudo-scientists, blowhards and people with a political agenda.
Yeah, very little proper science happens in the social sciences. I don’t think they are entirely worthless, but the rigor and precision of experiment just isn’t there and probably isn’t even possible.
They are doing what scientists do and trying to find alternate explanations and have others pick those explanations apart. It is not that far-fetched that this is evidence of engineering on a huge scale. It’s also quite possible that this is a natural phenom that we haven’t encountered yet; there’s a lot we haven’t seen.
Oh, I agree. And I think that people should put any plausible ideas out there. My comment was mostly an observation that scientists are not the ones who keep repeating the alien engineering hypothesis.
Good news for my fellow lazy procrastinators, we’re smarter
New research shows that grit can be costly and unnecessary.
http://www.theatlantic.com/hea…..up/410485/
The first test was a set of anagrams, or word scrambles, which participants were rewarded for solving by being entered into a $100 lottery for each correct answer. Sprinkled amid the do-able anagrams were 16 unsolvable words and 21 very difficult ones, like “kismet.” The participants who ranked higher on the grit assessment attempted fewer anagrams overall?a sign they didn’t skip the difficult or unsolvable ones like their less determined peers did.
For the final test, the researchers gave the subjects a math game, which was also rigged so that some of the participants felt like they were fighting an uphill battle. They also gave the participants an offer: When things got tough, they could either drop out of the experiment and get $1 for their troubles, or they could press on and get $2 if they won, but nothing if they lost. Grittier people didn’t solve any more math problems than their lazier counterparts, even though they felt more optimistic about the test than the others. They were, however, more likely to continue the game when they were losing, even though they risked walking away with nothing.
Whew. Thanks.

They list ‘kismet’ as merely ‘very difficult’ from the wording in that excerpt. But to be merely ‘very difficult’, there needs to be an anagram.
The words has stumped me and the internet. Either tell me what it is or admit that the sentence was improperly composited, and Kismet is in fact on the imposible list.
This ties in with something a German General said (Can’t remember, Clauswitz or Guderian) about picking your staff officers.
He grouped them in four catagories, based on Smart or Dumb plus Lazy or Industrious.
Bottom Line: Smart and Lazy were the guys to have on your staff. They’d find the best way to get the mission done. Dumb and Lazy were useful to hold down the unimportant trivial tasks that were still required. Smart and Industrious were good for the important special tasks that took away from the primary mission.
Dumb and Industrious were the most dangerous guys, because they’d work really hard at fucking up your mission.
Send them to the Russian front.
Anyone heard about this?

That was our experience negotiating with WalMart. Gross income would have exploded by a couple of orders of magnitude. Net profit would have barely budged. And we would have to take on a huge amount of debt and other potential liability. So we passed on the deal.
It seems that a lot of people are seduced by the top line number, and then imagine that they’ll be able to increase profitable sales through other channels. But I doubt that things work out that way very often.
What? You just make it up in volume. Dummy.
Serious answer – because third parties do better when both major party candidates are weak or unpopular. This is due to two factors: Lower voter turnout which means that the votes third party stalwarts constitute a larger percentage of overall votes cast. The second factor is the fuckit factor – the morons show up to vote for state and local offices and can’t bring themselves to vote for either of the major party candidates and end up pulling the lever for a third party candidate.
the votes cast by third-party stalwarts…
