The Feds are Murdering Alternative Doctors—Debunked!
A far-fetched conspiracy theory says a lot about alternative medicine advocates and their tenuous relationship with reality.
Social media has been abuzz with stories of the mounting death toll of alternative medicine practitioners in recent months. Hardly two weeks go by without another macabre report of a mysterious fatality of an osteopath, chiropractor, or herbalist, each one coming under seemingly suspicious circumstances.
Following a Food and Drug Administration raid of his premises, the body of holistic doctor and vaccination skeptic Jeff Bradstreet was found dead, shot in the chest and floating in a river. Osteopath Mary Rene Bovier was reported stabbed to death, with police treating it as a homicide. Soon there were five reported dead. Then eight. Then there were ten.
What could be going on? Some alternative medicine advocates have speculated that the deaths are linked to the government. Bradstreet's family has even set up a GoFundMe page seeking "To find the answers to the many questions leading up to the death of Dr Bradstreet, including an exhaustive investigation into the possibility of foul play." Maybe the nefarious pharmaceutical companies are knocking off the competition.
Or maybe not. The link that connects all of these deaths has finally been discovered. And according to Snopes, the real killer is… basic mathematics.
As of March 2015, there was an estimated range of 897,000 to just over 1,000,000 doctors in the United States, and per every 100,000 people (of all vocations) each year, approximately 821 die. Going by those numbers alone, between 6,500 and 8,200 medical doctors will statistically die of myriad causes in any given year. Each month approximately 700 doctors would die (based upon the number of American doctors and the number of overall deaths)… As such, six to eight deaths is well within the realm of expected doctor deaths.
Snopes goes on to dissect the other deaths, which don't seem all that suspicious after delving into the details. Some of the doctors who were reported as "alternative" or "holistic" actually weren't.
As the recent spate of speculation attests, alternative medicine advocates often see themselves as outsiders pitted against a hostile medical establishment. The federal government, "Big Pharma", and the medical profession are perceived to be in a silent conspiracy against them. There's nothing this cabal won't do to eliminate alternative practitioners in defense of their proft-making enterprises. It's a perfect example of what Reason editor Jesse Walker has called the Enemy from Above, a type of paranoid fantasy that envisions constant subterfuge from a malevolent, ruling elite.
But a recent Reason TV video turns that self-perception on its head. 'The Alternative Medicine Racket' shows that alternative medicine lost its claim to 'outsider' status decades ago, when the federal government began to mainstream its many methods, despite a lack of evidence of their effectiveness.
Today, what's known as "complementary" or "integrative" health is firmly entrenched in the medical establishment, with a well-funded center at the National Institutes of Health working to promote alternative treatments at dozens of medical centers across the nation. Yet despite $5.5 billion spent over the last 23 years, they've found no alternative cures. It's an astonishing record of taxpayer-funded futility.

Clinton body count redux?
Couldn't that guy have used chelation therapy to get the bullet out?
Excuse me, I used chelation therapy to cure my fibromayalgia.
I am uncertain, at this point, whether to make a joke or not.
fibromayalgia.
This almost necessitates a joke.
You can't call that mayo.
Try Viscount Monckton's New Proprietary Elixir, the sure cure for chelation therapy , chilblains AIDS and the common cold.
I would think that alternative medicinal practitioners, if they are using their own methods on themselves, are doing a fine job of killing themselves off.
No shit.
The stupid goes up to 11 with them.
Yup. In addition if there ever were some sort of trend in homicide of alternative practitioners (rather than merely their confusion over statistics, something these folks struggle with in general) the first thing to suspect would seem to be angry people who discovered their relative or friend died due to avoiding credible treatment since they were instead treated by an unscientific quack.
Are you telling me that people who go to hollistic doctors don't understand math and statistics???
*grabs fainting couch*
Statistically, the placebo effect cures some people.
Wow, Krainin, you're in on the cover-up? This conspiracy is broader than I thought.
/sarc
It is obvious Krainin is a Big Pharma plant, funded by the Koch brothers, who are in turn funded by the Queen, the Vatican, the Rothschild's and the Getty's.
Needz moar "!!!!!1!!1!"
And all-caps words.
Oh, don't be ridiculous. We know it's the Illuminati, and the Queen and Vatican aren't on the list.
The lizard people comment among us and you people keep imagining it is the bilderbergs.
We lack the subtlety inherent in this particular conspiracy
I won't know what to think until PIRATE TRUTHER weighs in.

Serendipitously, I was just wondering if anyone's heard from Groovus? Been a long time for our Ukrainian-based correspondent. Hope he's all good in the hood.
It's been a *very* long time from the standpoint of keeping track of someone in a potential war zone.
You know who else lost track of time in a warzone?...
The characters in _Inception_?
Nice, I but the answer we were looking for was Highlander
(Hangs head in shame)
General Santa Anna?
The Decepticons.
The Highlander?
Billy Pilgrim?
Injun and...Max Power too!

Injun
He said he had some big project to attend to for a while.
Not that anyone's keeping track, or anything.
Sloppy has last known contact.
Oh, and the email came from the Russian equivalent of gmail. He was there, settled, and said that he probably wouldn't be able to keep in touch anymore. It's not like he just stopped one day.
Oprah has some blame for this as well.
Speaking of you know who...

I was in the produce department of my local grocery store recently and I witnessed a woman dangle a crystal on a chain over heads of romaine lettuce. Thinking to myself, "Self, this is rather odd" I meandered casually over to where she was standing. A clerk brought out a tub of fresh lettuce. The lady held her crystal over the fresh lettuce and said they were safe, picked one out, and left. The clerk looked very confused. I had to ask what was going on, and was informed that the woman claimed to be a holistic raw food vegan, and was checking to see if her lettuce was possessed.
I almost lost it, I was laughing so hard.
Good way to get the freshest produce. If people think you're crazy, they'll give you whatever you want so you'll go away
Hmm.... Lettuce. No nutritional value, and most likely to be contaminated. I say give her the whole tub.
Some of my favorite columns here are on conspiracy theories. This one is similar to all those libertarians who frequent these pages claiming climate science is just one big government funded conspiracy. Actually, that one makes the alternative medicine conspiracy look like kid stuff. Because the climate "conspiracy" encompasses nearly every government on the globe, and nearly 100% of climate scientists. Wow. That's one gargantuan conspiracy!
OMG UR SO RIGHT
THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO BAN CARBON
Favorite comment but I forget where I saw it:
"I dont understand why we need carbon scrubbers in coal fired power plants. Why don't they just remove the carbon from the coal before they burn it?"
It was probably Jackand Ace.
Party. Of. Science.
YOU ALL HATE SCIENCE EVERYONE KNOW SCIENCE SHOWS THAT TAXES CONTROL THE TEMPERATURE OF THE EARTH WE NEED MOAR TAXES LIKE CHINA SEE HOW ENVIRONMENTAL THEY ARE?
joe is a scientific genius. He once argued with me when I said that Newtonian physics had been proved wrong by Einsteinian physics. I forget how stupid his argument was or what it was exactly (this was years ago), but that argument was when I fully realized how much of a fundamentally mendacious moron he is. That was good.
Funny, when I was in school I was taught that carbon was the foundation of life. Now I assume kids are being taught that it's killing the environment and needs to be eliminated.
It's not a conspiracy, it's a money faucet that lends itself to increasing the footprint of power to those already in power.
If alternative medicine became a way for people like Hillary Clinton to expand their personal empire, it would be as big and important as climate change.
The conspiracy theorists are here...and you just proved it.
And you just proved that the mongoloids are here, joe! Well done, Corky!
joe: a mongoloid, or the mongoloid?
So, I'm assuming that you also rip on the "progressives" who screech about the Koch Brothers and their evil "big money interests" plotting to hijack every election and take over the world, right? Because I don't see how THAT'S not a conspiracy theory.
It's not a conspiracy, dumbass, it's called incentive.
joe, your powers of reason and grasp of the fundamentals of rudimentary logic has convinced me... that my time is better spent watching football.
If it wasn't for CO2, you'd be the height of a fully grown adult male!!!
It's not a conspiracy, it's a religion masquerading as science.
http://www.hawaiifreepress.com.....igion.aspx
And yeah, politicians love it. It's an excuse for them to grab more power.
That's why you have been arguing so strongly for nuclear power, right?
Religion, not conspiracy. They are too stupid for the latter.

Imagine a world where Astronomers were forced by government rules to accept astronomers in their midst. Government rules which said that government student loans had to pay for astrology classes.
Then imagine that the scientific community had to differentiate what they were talking about in meetings by referring to astronomy as "evidence-based science".
Now you're beginning to get modern healthcare.
And climate science. Joe just reminded me.
Thank God the scientific community has Snopes!
Shit, typo... accept 'astrologers'.

Patel demystifies a new type of accounting that takes into consideration the social, environmental, and health impacts of food production. He points out, "There's a theory of change here, of a kind. In a world where prices reflect environmental damage, you reward good behavior. If you internalize costs, agroecological food at your local farmers' market ends up being cheaper than the packages at a supermarket." This method of accounting is called true cost accounting and could radically change the food system.
Cheap food is bad because BIGAGROCORPS!
This sort of economic whimwham is like the flip side of sports stadium accounting.
"Trust me. My numbers make perfect sense, even though I made most of them up in order to support my conclusion."
"If you internalize costs"
Is that a roundabout way of saying, "if you abandon math to magic, and logic to FEELS..."
Well they are right about one thing. Price does reflect environmental impact, but not in the way they think it does. The majority of the cost everything you buy is the cost of the energy it takes to produce it.
I am not sure what this means: "If you internalize costs...". I have a suspicion that means the producer is supposed to absorb some of the cost and not pass it on to the consumer. Of course this doesn't make the cost disappear, it is just paid by someone other than the consumer. It doesn't mitigate the environmental cost one whit.
Ooooooh I get it now. It reduces profits, which is the real evil here, not environmental damage.
The watermelons just can't help but let the mask slip I guess.
Well, yeah. Not accounting for the environmental cost of using evil fossil fuels to transport products from where they are cheap to produce to where they are expensive to produce is just plain evil. Those fossil fuels are simultaneously killing all life on the planet while providing life sustaining food to people who are far away from where the food is produced. Thing is, if you allow the evil corporations to profit from bringing food from where it is cheap to produce to where it is expensive to produce, then you are killing all life on the planet while at the same time increasing inequality. I mean, people are getting rich off of this, because stupid consumers are buying the cheaper food that was transported to their location with evil fossil fuels instead of ponying up the extra cash to purchase the locally produced food. If the price of the transported food reflected the true cost to the environment, then the locally produced food would be much cheaper. That's why we need carbon taxes. To make the price of transported food reflect the evil that it is doing onto the planet, and nudge people into buying less of it. That's what happens when the price of something goes up. People buy less of it. Unless it is unskilled labor. Raising the minimum wage has absolutely no effect on hiring habits of businesses. But for everything else, raising prices changes behavior! Carbon taxes now! We must save the planet from the corporations!
"Patel demystifies a new type of accounting that takes into consideration the social, environmental, and health impacts of food production."
So if we accept has premise as being true, he'll be able to prove his premise!
BTW, he's not alone in wishing the poor can't afford to eat:
"The problem with living in a fast-food nation is that we expect food to be cheap.

I'm trying to slog my way through this article about college costs in the NYT, but I stubbed my toe on this
-
We know this from historical experience. In 1900, less than 10 percent of the U.S. population had a high-school degree, and many couldn't have received one if they wanted. There just weren't enough public high schools. In the beginning of the 20th century, a nationwide effort was undertaken to provide free secondary schooling to every American child. By the end of World War II, half of all young American adults had high-school diplomas; by the 1970s, a vast majority did. The country's rapid growth during that century ? the rise of industry, the development of technology, the dawn of a vast middle class ? would be hard to explain without acknowledging the spread of education as a cause.
Funny, there's a widely accepted alternate explanation that says the industrial revolution led millions to migrate to cities from the farms. Because they were ill-suited to factory work, the business leaders pushed for a public education system to prepare their workforce.
The key components? Show up on time, take breaks at specific times, eat lunch at specific time and leave at a specific time. Be able to follow simple directions and read well enough to follow warning signs.
That is all. Public education was specifically designed to create a factory workforce, nothing more. That is why public schools are so uniformly bad. They are not designed to create free-thinking entrepreneurs. Quite the contrary. They are specifically designed to create workers who show up according to the clock and do as they are told and can read instructions so as to avoid industrial accidents. That is all.
Strangely, this is one of the functions of organized labor as well. It is interesting that organized labor fights so hard to prevent the reform of public education into a system that would better serve students.
So here we are in the information age, where worker bees are increasingly people who sit in cubicles and type on computers. Higher education has exploded into a business worth many, many billions of dollars. Taken as a whole, it seems to make sense that the same forces are pushing the federal government to exert more control over higher education.
As I was hopping around the room on one foot, cursing, I tripped over the rug and struck my head on the coffee table, and that's as far as I got.
Maybe I'm crazy, but this seems ass backwards. One could just as easily claim the increased time available from efficiency gains made time available for "superfluous" academic pursuits.

Also, reason's character limit gives me a giant pain in my ass.
Jesus- what a rambling mishmash of educratic assertion, wishful thinking and outright bullshit.
Why is college so expensive? Who the fuck knows? Who cares?
Send money; time is running out!
It sure has been a good year for peppers. I just finished canning my 26th quart of mixed jalepenos, habeneros, and tabascos.
Yum.
I just picked up a couple dozen red fresnos. I've been waiting.
Nice. My mother just gave me three jars of hot peppers that she canned. Said they'll be ready in November. Looking forward to it.
But I'm hungry now!
"Yet despite $5.5 billion spent over the last 23 years, they've found no alternative cures."
This is not true. The placebo effect, whereby a neutral sugar pill has been observed to cure in a small small number of patients, is well established. Much of these billions are spent to nullify the placebo effect in expensive double blind protocols.
Oh good. I was waiting for your $.02.

THE TOWERS ARE IN FREE FALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
"THE TOWERS ARE IN FREE FALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL"
Now as before. Nobody refutes bldg 7's free fall collapse and nobody refutes the placebo effect. Yet both these undisputed facts seem to rub folks here the wrong way for some reason. Group conformity and anti-intellectualism go a long way to explain reaction to heterodox ideas here.
I wasn't aware that being a retarded paranoid conspiracy monkey was "heterodox" thinking, though in your delusional skull I'm sure it seems that way, because, well...you're a complete dipshit. But please, keep telling us about how you're an independent thinker...who merely regurgitates the moronic conspiracy theories of other crackpots. You're right! You're a genius!
PLACEEEBOOOOOOOOO EFFFFFFECCCCCCTTTTTTT
" how you're an independent thinker..."
If you mean that I post under my own name and don't use a pseudonym, don't have to worry about what the boss or the co-workers think of me, that makes me independent, yes. It doesn't make me a genius though. On the whole, independence is rather humdrum these days. You are better off sticking with the herd.
"If you mean that I post under my own name and don't use a pseudonym, don't have to worry about what the boss or the co-workers think of me, that makes me independent, yes."
Well, in everyone's life, if you look really hard, you might find something to be proud of.
Assuming you ignore the other 99.99% of trueman's life for which any sane person would find mortally embarrassing.
But what about herd immunity?!?
Oh man you are a fun one.
Anti-intellectualism?
I love how you see yourself so unrealistically. YOU'RE the smart one, right?
At least I understand point loads and shear force, and can do the math to back it up. You watch youtube videos. GENUIS.
"At least I understand point loads and shear force, and can do the math to back it up. You watch youtube videos. GENUIS."
Good that you understand point loads and presumably a load more, How is it relevant to free fall? If you feel the urge to insult me while you answer, go ahead. Don't hold back on my account.
You're literally too stupid to understand how you're being mocked. It's...sublime. I can't tell you how entertaining you are. Not that you would understand anyway, of course.
Here I was champing at the bit for your take on free fall and not a word! Surprise.
"You're literally too stupid to understand how you're being mocked"
We're all being mocked. You just think you've got herd immunity. If you pardon my undeserving use of a scientific metaphor.

No one needs to.
You don't understand either. You seem to think they mean things they don't.
"No one needs to."
You need to go further than insults if you want to enter a dialogue with me. You've made it clear and will doubtless continue to make it clear that you have no interest in aspiring to anything beyond the levels of Sevo discourse.
Fuck you. Explain EXACTLY what you think happened to the WTC on 9/11. Spare me no details. Don't hide behind this "freefall" bullshit. Tell me exactly what you think happened.
Shit, or get off the pot, pussy.
ARRR IT BE THE JOOZ MATEY
" Explain EXACTLY what you think happened to the WTC on 9/11."
I'm interested in bldg 7. It was observed to collapse at free fall speed. Do you agree with that or is it bullshit? I think if it was observed to collapse at free fall speed, it contradicts the official explanation of a progressive collapse.
How EXACTLY the building fell, I have no idea. But it's not important. It would only be my uninformed speculation in any case. We can measure the speed of collapse. That's not speculation. It's not an outcome of some dubious computer modelling. It's evidence you can either ignore or take into account.
What about the quacks running insane asylums or conducting badly controlled drug studies and flooding the populations with medications of dubious efficacy and serious side-effects?
"flooding the populations with medications of dubious efficacy'
Do you have an actual example?
fwiw, proper "insane asylums" (distinguished by serving the function to 'isolate' rather than 'ameliorate the symptoms' of patients) ceased to exist decades ago. See = "Deinstitutionalization"
There are precious few remaining hospitals exclusively devoted to treatment of mentally ill inpatients; modern psych wards are mostly complements to existing hospitals/medical institutions, and mostly serve patients on temporary basis, rather than those institutionally consigned.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pm.....MC2582668/
As for psychiatric coercion, yes, long term detainment is less common. The stanford prison experiments were cut short, but this practice remains commonplace.
proper "insane asylums" (distinguished by serving the function to 'isolate' rather than 'ameliorate the symptoms' of patients) ceased to exist decades ago.
Well, we just call them "prisons" now.
" we just call them "prisons" now."
That's not quite right.
We do have some prisons specifically *for* mentally ill criminals. but that's if they commit crimes that a judge & jury believe warrants their incarceration.
Asylums, by contrast, were 'prisons' one could be confined to for the mere fact of being mentally ill.
Involuntary civil commitment is exceedingly rare these days, and is almost entirely fairly short term... for "evaluation" purposes.
Spoilsport.
That's a pretty weak "debunk" how much did they pay you? Oh really, doctors are murdered all the time? The doctors in question weren't really alternative medicine? The once that were hadn't really done anything beneficial? You're a shill for the same industry.
"Yet despite $5.5 billion spent over the last 23 years, they've found no alternative cures."
