Social Conservatism = Hipster Repellent
'The Selfie Vote' author Kristen Soltis Anderson on how Republicans can win back young voters.
"I asked young voters across the country, 'What words come to mind when you think of the Republican Party?' and it was words like close-minded, racist, intolerant, old-fashioned, stuck in the 1950s," says Republican pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson, who is the author of the new book 'The Selfie Vote: Where Millenials are Leading America (And How Republicans Can Keep Up)'. She adds, "I don't know if Republicans have done enough, recently, to combat this image."
In a conversation with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie, Soltis Anderson talks about the coming political impact of the millennial generation, who outnumber the baby boomers but don't yet vote in their numbers; their unprecedented ethnically diverse demographics; why they eschew "traditional" touchstones of adulthood such as home ownership in favor of entrepreneurial ventures; and how President Obama has left his rivals in the dust when it comes to actively engaging the younger generation on social media.

"Social Conservatism = Hipster Repellent"
I've never seen such a great argument for social conservatism, and I did not expect it from Reason of all places.
No kidding. I don't really want to be a SOCON but if doing so would mean never having to deal with a hipster again, maybe it is a price worth paying.
You don't want to be? But you're so good at it!
Indeed.
Yes because defending the rights of people means you are one. I guess the entire reason readership are hay convicted drug users.
Seems like a lot more trouble than the traditional (one might even say conservative) approach of shouting, "Get off my lawn!"
why they eschew "traditional" touchstones of adulthood such as home ownership in favor of entrepreneurial ventures;
That would be because they are broke and drowning in student loan debt and can't afford a home and there are no steady jobs available. Sure, they are choosing to be poor and hold shitty one off jobs because they are "cool and entrepreneurial" not because the housing bubble and the government nuking the economy has given them no other choice. Yeah that is it.
The other reason they are 'eschewing' home ownership is they're not old enough to buy a house yet.
Data shows that as the current youth get into their 30s they are just as eager to start a family and move to a house in the suburbs as all previous recent generations.
Sure, if you ask a bunch of people fresh out of college, they want to live where the action is and be renters in the cool urban areas. Guess what? We did the same thing when we were that age.
There is just a strong desire of the coalition of 'sustainability' and 'smart growth' people, combined with developers who make much better margins off of high-density housing, to convince everyone that no one wants their own detached home with a yard anymore, so let's please pass laws encouraging 'walkable' apartment-based communities and discourage single-family residences.
Unfortunately, this 'smart growth' cabal carries so much sway with politicians, they may end up forcing a lot of policies which result in millenials having little choice but to live in apartments -- when they would have preferred their own house with a driveway and backyard -- and thus coerce their predictions into reality.
"combined with developers who make much better margins off of high-density housing,"
What do you call brown stones and Sears and Roebuck subdivisions from 70 to 100 years ago if not high-density housing?
You do realize they are essentially illegal to build these days and they were the essence of affordable back in their day.
You got that "smart growth" has raised housing prices well past affordable though.
You could assemble a Sears (or Monkey Ward) house on any size lot you wanted to. Freight costs ensured the greatest density of Sears homes is in Illinois. They're nice houses if you favor the Arts & Crafts style.
Or even..
"The other reason they are 'eschewing' home ownership is they're not old enough to because of their piss-poor credit scores, largely a result of their cumbersome student debt.. and unproductive choices in academic studies for their chosen future careers . Combined with rising housing costs, increased tax burdens (O-care, etc.. ), and inflation, they're in no practical position to buy a house yet... nor will they be anytime soon"
They may be "cool" but historic data on start ups and small business show they are not entrepreneurial.
The data shows they are unemployed living with their parents and stopped looking for work because there isn't any work to find.
Reason has a squad of genXers who run it and can remember better economic times. Why is it focused on getting the millennial opinion about the economy and not focused on telling them the facts that millennials are historically fucked and why?
I just read an article that reported on new research on curing aging. The cure to old age? Young blood, apparently.
Those kiddies better be careful because the boomers will not hesitate to suck them dry in yet another way (besides financially).
Well, as Dracula was fond of saying, 'The blood is the life!'.
Numero Uno, it was Renfield, not Dracula, who said it, and numero two-o, he was quoting Deuteronomy 12:23.
The "Elizabeth Bathory Therapeutic Treatment."
And because home ownership is for chumps who actually think buying anything besides consumer goods means you own them, or that a house is anything other than a time and money sink.
and it was words like close-minded, racist, intolerant, old-fashioned, stuck in the 1950s
I guess all these bright young minds have never actually studied U.S. ancient history, i.e. the 1950s. Democrats were all of those things back then, and more.
Democrats today still long for parts of the 50s: high income tax rates and high union membership, bipartisan support for SocSec, plus that bipartisan support for the Cold War.
Honestly, I don't give a fuck about where millennials are going to lead - because by the time they actually kick us geezers out of power, I'll be close enough to death that nothing they do will matter all that much.
I don't think it's that hard to understand that the party affiliations have evolved over time.... Or do you think all of the civil war northern republicans moved to the south and the southern democrats moved up north?
The fact that the democrats used to suck doesn't mean that both the democrats and republicans don't suck now.
party affiliations have evolved over time.
True, the dems have evolved from a racist-nationalist party to a socialist-racist one.
I suspect most of the civil war Republicans have long since died off.
Now you understand the meaning behind "The South will rise again!"
*checks shotguns and zombie traps*
*applause*
My first thought was "what's wrong with the 1950s"? Then I realized that hot rods are dangerous, polluting and require skills to assemble and drive. The first rock &roll; song was created wholly by violent misogynist Ike Turner and Rock & Roll is cultural appropriation when played by whites Working and middle class women widely exercised their choice to not work and television was a lily white wasteland.
My first thought in regard to your post was Jim Crow, anti-gay laws, trucking cartels, and cultural repression of women. You know, things that should be fucking obvious.
and it was words like close-minded, racist, intolerant, old-fashioned, stuck in the 1950s
Keep in mind these are the same people who look back at the 1950s as a glorious high-tax economic utopia and a period where Republicans "still cared about the country."
But one positive is that in the 1950's, and through 1964, our coinage had silver and had value and the country still had Silver Certificate bills. Downside was that is was illegal to own gold. Fuck you FDR!
I realize that but it's beside the point. My point is that progressives, milennial or otherwise, have a schizophrenic view of the 1950s. They remark at what an oppressively conformist cultural environment it was (with no actual clue that this came about as the result of 1) having to go through the Depression and fight World War 2, and 2) a general moratorium on immigration in the previous decade, which produced a generally homogenous status quo and civic religion of "Americanism" in the process), while glorifying the high tax rates and overall innovation and energy that may not have been possible without that conformity in the first place.
As far as I'm concerned, these worthless, unemployed, narcissistic millennial morons have everything that's coming to them.
I think these hipsters are naturally more entrepreneurial than some other generations (man I wish we had uber and could start our artisan mustache wax collective but there's laws in the way) - sharing economy stuff - which could make them potential allies - however the socon destroys all of that as there is nothing more unhip than having those viewpoints.
I think the gop is slowly changing - watching the debates I felt like they've accepted that socon stuff is becoming less of a winner (although apparently we only have like 10 guys with a BB gun and an inflatable raft for a military - which was news to me)
"we only have like 10 guys with a BB gun and an inflatable raft for a military - which was news to me"
Yeah, my question is where in the hell is all that money going?
"I think the gop is slowly changing..."
Maybe true, the voters have certainly changed. I remember commenters here at the time of the confederate flag controversy a few weeks back. Some of them saw the attack on the flag as an attack on the GOP. Yes, that's right, the party of Lincoln is now seen as the defender of the confederacy and its heritage.
Everything started going downhill after McCarthyism came to an end. Now we're soaking in Marxism.
"Now we're soaking in Marxism."
Cultural Marxism yes Marxism not so much.
Quantitative Easing forever and the divergence of a collapsing real economy from the FED funded finance bubble is more closely attuned with Fascism then with Marxism.
Of course Marx did want a central bank and Fascism and Marxism are closer to Incestuous siblings then kissing cousins but that is whole other bag of worms.
"Quantitative Easing forever and the divergence of a collapsing real economy from the FED funded finance bubble is more closely attuned with Fascism then with Marxism."
That sounds about right. There is a tendency to equate economic socialism with marxism these days. It's a convenient way to distract people from some of the directions governments have taken these days.
"narcissistic millennial morons have everything that's coming to them."
Honestly they are not so bad as a whole. MSM has decided to scour colleges for the most scummy lying pieces of shit cultural Marxists on the planet and given them jobs as journalists.
An important part of turning the tide against the Marxists is taking over the more important media outlets and cleanse them of progressives. That will eliminate much of their power.
I think the worst of my generation is most attracted to Facebook and other means of broadcasting their social signals. This makes my generation look worse than it is.
What you're saying is millennials aren't as dumb as they sound?
As far as I'm concerned, these worthless, unemployed, narcissistic millennial morons have everything that's coming to them.
Hear hear! Lazy little motherfuckers can just get up off their entitled asses and get an entry level factory job with full benefits and extortionist union wages in a rapidly expanding market with double digit annual GDP growth and buy a house on a 10,000 square foot lot with a 10 year mortgage like we did in my day!
Don't worry. It will all be solved once we implement a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage and squeeze out small businesses while automating larger ones.
Do you come with the car?
/Fist
Oh, you!
[giggle]
I thought hipster repellent came in a spray or gel form?
Hipster repellent comes in many different forms, all of which are new and mainstream.
Or in the form of hard work.
Slayer is the best hipster repellant. Or was that hippie repellant? Eh, same thing really.
True. They also will leave if you make fun of them. Pepper spray works in a pinch.
Concentrated ammonia would work well.
I'm sure Trump's new campaign poster will win them over in droves:
http://i2.wp.com/www.powerline.....n-copy.jpg
Seriously, I wish Trump would use this for his campaign.
The stars-n-bars flag is a bit much.
Second Naval Jack, Confederate Battle Flag or Southern Cross, not Star and Bars.
It probably would. Oddly, despite all the cuckservative and cuckatarian outrage, not even a liberal like Maureen Dowd can bring herself to be too tough on him. He might have a bit more cross party appeal than he's being given credit for.
I strongly suspect much of his support comes from progressives who think he'll make things easier on hillary.
I just watched that debate. I didn't think Megyn was any harder on him then the other hosts and her question came early so he had longer to get over it. He must have serious women insecurity issues.
We isn't he victoriously holding up the bloody head of Megyn Kelly?
Bloody head?
*narrows gaze*
That was covered in another article.
Not all millennial are hipsters. And not all hipsters are millennial (most of the ones I know are better classified as gen xers having miss life crises)
Shhh... let the old folks have their millennial bashing party. They'll be asleep by 4 anyway.
Get off my lawn!
Someone's gotta stay in the workforce!
Damn you fast fingered youngsters.
And not all hipsters are millennial (most of the ones I know are better classified as gen xers having miss life crises)
I thought they were better classified as "the Reason editorial staff".
When did all millennials become hipsters? And, are all hipsters millennials?
Does not compute.
" 'What words come to mind when you think of the Republican Party?' and it was words like close-minded"
I do not think Republicans are clothes-minded at all. Straight up, off-the-rackness weaksauce.
'stuck in the 1950s,'
Which Republican most strongly represents the Greaser-vote? I cannot tell (although Trump wears something close to a duck-tail, sans any lubricants) I await the next GOP sock-hop with great anticipation.
The GOP-hop!
They're not far wrong about republicans, but, is their option of libertarians much better?
Or opinion even.
A late-20-something 'fact checker' for the New Yorker informed me (without my indicating anything about my own political inclinations) that "libertarianism is only popular among juveniles who have no understanding of history" and assured me that Federal Taxation is vital for our prosperity, because of the necessity of things like "Local Roads and Schools".
I then told him that Roads are mostly funded by local municipal bond-issues, and that Schools are funded by property taxes, and that the Federal Taxes have zero relationship with either, and are almost entirely about funding massive debts being incurred by Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, and the Military.
i.e. the "Badly-Run Insurance-Company with an Army" depiction of the federal government
He scrunched his brow and said, "I think I'll need to check the facts on that" before he'd just take my word for it. He assured me he was very very informed about these sorts of things, for you see, he worked for the New Yorker.
Something about him really captured the millenial-generational-hubris for me.
Was his name Ezra "we can always print more money" Klein?
The New Yorker is such a pathetic joke.
I found the recent article excellent. Good writing, good research, but it also exhibits some of the flaws of snotty of East Coast intellectuals.
"libertarianism is only popular among juveniles who have no understanding of history"
Well, yeah. I mean, libertarians support liberty. They don't want to ask permission and obey orders from government, just like juveniles don't want to ask permission and obey orders from their parents.
Except for the fact that libertarians are adults, not juveniles, and that government is not our parent, the analogy is spot on.
Whenever I hear people say something along these lines I ask if their knowledge of history includes the US Constitution and its first ten amendments. I think libertarian beliefs are far more in alignment with that piece of history than whatever Mr. or Ms. Smug endorses.
If you support the US Constitution and the first ten amendments, then you support slavery and not allowing women to vote! See? Libertarians are monsters!
*crosses arms with a smug smirk*
Government Almighty is the new religion. Get with the program, and with the pogram and the poogram, for that matter! Git WITH it!
"Badly-Run Insurance-Company with an Army"
Love that.
Jesus Christ that's some nuclear-grade derp. "I'll check my facts on whether or not reality is as you describe it."
You punched him in his vagina, right? Tell me you did that, GILMORE.
I did point out that there was an evasive habit among younger people to simply "deny" things... or withhold 'acceptance' of things they don't actually know.....because they could not trust/verify anything until they found a source they approved of, and which explained things in terms they found most-appealing...
Basically - when i said, "most of federal spending breaks out like X"... he was skeptical.... rather then acknowledge he'd *never actually cared enough to look into the issue*
I pointed out that he didn't seem to consider his own lack of interest or experience as a liability in any way when it came to passing judgement about the Necessity of Federal Taxation.
because he seemed to think, "when i need certain facts, i will LOOK THEM UP!"...rather than actively gathering and knowing them offhand *before* one develops an opinion on an issue.
i.e. he still saw no problem with his Strong Opinion based on zero information. If Federal Taxation wasn't super-necessary because of 'roads'...well, its was probably super-necessary for other reasons, but he can't be bothered to look them up at them moment. Why would you expect that?
He actually said something else which i'll never forget =
I asked, "did you have another example?"
...and he went, "Yeah, but i'm not getting reception here"
because they could not trust/verify anything until they found a source they approved of
Judge the messenger, not the message.
I asked, "did you have another example?"
...and he went, "Yeah, but i'm not getting reception here"
Meme-ify that shit.
It's an old lefty trick to not count entitlement spending as spending, "because it's mandated," and thus military spending looks much larger, when it's actually only about half of Social Security + Medicare/Medicaid.
There's definitely a public high school and expensive liberal arts college somewhere in there.
Ivy League.
A liber-what-ian???
/millennial
I'm not even sure which millennials they're polling. A quick look at the alt-right, neo-reactionary, identitarian and white nationalist sites, all movements which are in their ascendancy, makes it pretty obvious a dispraportionate number of their writers and commenters are under thirty. Although in fairness, none of them seem to have a very high opinion of the Republicans, either.
I'm sure they all think they are representative of all other millennials as well.
It's too late for that. The narrative is that the generation is a bunch of hipster liberals. To be honest someone like me has almost nothing in common with the younger portion of the generation, and yet we are lumped in with teenagers for some reason. And apparently all millennials are white yuppies with helicopter parents, because other demographics stopped having children from the early 80s to the early 2000s.
generalizing by generation is even dumber than most other dumb generalizations people make. why would being born within the same 30 or so year span make people have anything in common with each other? sure we've all lived through some of the same things, but that has nothing to do with what we're like as individuals
There are such things as 'trends' and the popularization of the internet during the formative years of a cohort can have a huge impact on the trends of a cohort.
Not disputing the existence of trends. But even from a strictly age-based standpoint I can guarantee I have very little in common with an 18-year-old or younger teenager, despite being considered part of the same generation by demographers. Hell, when I got out of the Army I had very little in common with the fresh new recruits even though we were both part of the same organization and had shared some of the same experiences.
As for the popularization of the Internet, that happened in the mid-to-late 90s, before the younger portion of the millennial generation had stopped shitting their pants if they were even born yet. By the early 2000s the Internet was already a "thing" and companies like Amazon, eBay, et al had been in business for nearly a decade.
North Korea weighs in on Fox V Trump on twitter
DPRK News Service ?@DPRK_News
U.S. media in total disarray as venomous Fox News declares war on noted scholar Donald Trump.
I like their reality better.
Contrasted with the hysterical idiocy being blathered about by his critics, confusing Trump with a scholar is perfectly understandable.
There is also this. Bet they're not too concerned whether the tiger has a name.
DPRK News Service ?@DPRK_News
Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Un accepts gift of rare white tiger rug from grateful people of Nepal, in recognition of DPRK earthquake relief.
Parody alert! DPRK News Twitter account is run by Popehat.
The boomers want your blood, millennials.
Hipster farming!
Drinking it doesn't work.
You never know until you try.
Umm
It didn't seem to work for Keith Richards.
Black cops for black people, white cops for white people. Presumably green people are just shit out of luck.
http://news.yahoo.com/color-co.....00322.html
Eugene S. Robinson is a dipshit. I guess he's not aware that the Baltimore cop being charged with the most serious crime in the recent incident is black? It's called the thin blue line for a reason.
There's also the fact that oppressed groups gaining power can easily becomes oppressors (including to their own groups) too. See many post-colonial regimes as proof.
So there is more than one idiot named Eugene Robinson?
Separate but equal!!!!
And when that doesn't work, can we stop talking about race as the causative factor with all these damned feral cops?
the author of that piece is both an accomplished BJJ fighter, and singer for the band "Oxbow"...which does this...which is a thing.
I think the 'writing coherently about public policy' thing is sort of an after-thought.
Is that duct tape over his ears meant to keep him from hearing opposing viewpoints?
Well this was totally worth it to discover my new favorite band.
And if you don't agree, you're racist.
He's the black Henry Rollins.
Awesome! Why stop at cops, what about the drinking fountains?
Got your hands bound, your head down,
your eyes closed.
You look so precious now.
I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this
shit blood and cum on my hands.
I've come round full circle.
My lamb and martyr, this will be over soon.
You look so precious.
Tool pretty much nailed Progressive ideology, go figure.
At first glance I thought that was Agile Cyborg...
Does this mean Irvine gets an Asian police force?
The only hipster repellent I see is made in bulk by the DNC.
It is sprayed vigorously by MSM on anyone who opposes the the status quo. More recently it has been used on the likes of Trump and Sanders but one only has to recall how the Tea Party was drenched in it for opposing the bank bailouts.
It works like this:
See rebellion
Spray rebellion with ad hominem claims of racism sexism and homophobia
It has been amusing to see Fox News and Reason Magazine join MSM in the past months in its application.
Reason is for the status quo. All right then. Where does this kind of lunacy come from?
They are very much for the cultural status que and will jump on most prog "he's the racist" witch hunts. The only lunacy involved is that reason is enslaved to a popular culture that totally devalues self reliance and liberty but can't understand why it's arguments fall on deaf ears.
Cool story bro. Are the voices in your head louder sometimes?
You seem to get more nuts every day. You have always held incoherent positions. But your level of thought seems to have dropped significantly.
You have always held incoherent positions.
The irony that the only people who share his bloodlust for middle eastern wars are religious fanatics and neocons who he ostensibly despises has always given me a chuckle.
He thinks because reason and Fox are anti-Trump it means they've been infected with political correctness or are using ad hominem against him.
What corning and some Trump supporters don't get is the enemy of my enemy isn't necessarily my friend.
Just because Trump upsets the GOP apple cart doesn't mean he's a hero. He's still the same jackass he's always been. Sometimes there are no good guys.
Have all Republicans lost their minds as badly as the Hit&Runpublicans;? Something weird happened sometime in the past few months.
Yeah, I think they mostly have lost their minds. The GOP's attempt at moderation supports it, Obama stokes it, and Trump feeds it. They just don't get that they're being played. Come November, they're gonna feel like a drunk girl after rape-rape at a frat party but with no way to get revenge or justice.
I wouldn't know about H&R, though, not having been here that long.
Let me make this clear for you:
I am pro-choice yet find it impossible to find a libertarian argument to fund Planned Parenthood with tax dollars.
I am pro-immigration yet find it impossible to find a libertarian argument for calling a certain someone a sexist.
"I wouldn't know about H&R, though, not having been here that long."
That might explain why you are desperately trying to get me to denounce a certain person in order to "prove" my libertarian street cred by calling me a republican and a certain someone supporter. Warty and John are fully aware of my feelings for that certain person and why as a libertarian I would have those feelings.
What I am finding here at Reason is not a libertarian argument against that certain person and his politics but instead I see an SJW argument against him which has no place or origin in libertarianism.
This whole fucking "call out for denunciation" reads like cultural signalling and I find it sickening.
I'm not desperately trying to get you to do shit, sweetie. Additionally, I couldn't give two damns about your positions on...well anything really.
The only one denouncing anyone here is you. You've attacked the writers at reason as SJW fellow travelers.
There's a libertarian argument against Donald Trump that's so obviously you'd need to be retarded not to recognize it, and if reason writers haven't focused on ripping apart his policies it's because it would be a bit like slapping a cognitively impaired toddler.
The wailing and whining about how Trump was attacked with a SJW argument is pitiful. He was attacked because he's a monumental jackass. He's said and done mind-blowingly contradictory things. He's an anti-intellectually loudmouth.
I suspect you let your own hatred for SJW types cloud and pervade your arguments because you're almost incoherent.
What do I have to do to get you to call me sweetie?
What do I have to do to get you to call me sweetie?
Be more retarded.
No can do.
Be more retarded.
I mean that is the nicest way. You're too clever to get called sweetie.
"and if reason writers haven't focused on ripping apart his policies it's because it would be a bit like slapping a cognitively impaired toddler."
You come so close yet miss it entirely.
Again as you mentioned before, you are new here so I ask:
Remember when Reason's June 2014 cover was called sexist? Remember when Cathy Young was denounced as rape apologist? Remember the past 5 years and how many times Reason has been called racists? Homophobes? Misogynists? Remember being called white cis males for years on end?
I do.
Gosh there might be a reason why I think dog piled ad hominin should be avoided.
"I'm not desperately trying to get you to do shit, sweetie. Additionally, I couldn't give two damns about your positions on...well anything really."
and then
"The wailing and whining about how Trump was attacked with a SJW argument is pitiful."
"I suspect you let your own hatred for SJW types cloud and pervade your arguments because you're almost incoherent."
This is congestive dissonance on your part. You make repeated claims about my opinion and views that are entirely false. You care very much what I think and do and want very much to frame them as something they are not. Why is that?
Riiight. Well, okay then.
Gosh there might be a reason why I think dog piled ad hominin should be avoided.
Ad hom? WTF are you talking about? There is nothing ad hom about calling out Trump's remarks as boorish and uninformed. Stop lumping in good manner with 'being PC'!
"Warty and John are fully aware of my feelings for that certain person"
I don't think anyone should hold their deepest feelings for Joe Biden inside them like that. Just let it out, have a good cry, and let the healing begin.
Trump? Trump's a douchebag. I think almost everyone agrees about that. (*tho there were some solid-mouth-breathing prospects in a thread yesterday, none of whom seemed like regulars, but anyway)
There seems to be some difference of opinion about how much people are bored with the Trump-denouncing as filler-material during a slow-news month, versus those who find it refreshing to be repeatedly reminded that Good People never say mean things about Mexicans, Women, or Fat people.
(*except chris christie, melinda haag, and maybe subcommander marcos - although i got to say, he really keeps bandoliers in style)
"I don't think anyone should hold their deepest feelings for Joe Biden inside them like that. Just let it out, have a good cry, and let the healing begin."
I will say when Biden forced Obama's hand on gay marriage I liked him more then I ever thought possible....in ways I never imagined.
DENOUNCE THE TRUMP, GILMORE. I demand that you denounce him or be shunned!!!!! The only thing more boring than attacking the mouth-breathers celebrating the brilliance of the TRUMP is those denouncing reason for denouncing Trump.
I RENOUNCE SATAN (TRUMP) AND ALL HIS WORKS AND EMPTY PROMISES, AND I WILL EVEN UNSUBSCRIBE FROM HIS TWITTER FEED, SERIOUSLY, BECAUSE ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY ANYMORE
Amen

forgive me, for i have succumbed to temptation....
"Donald J. Trump ?@realDonaldTrump 3h3 hours ago New Jersey, USA

You stay you, The Donald.
(wipes tear, un-follows)
What's more annoying? Trump, those who denounce him, those who complain about those who denounce him, those who denounce those who complain about those who denounce him, etc?
STOP TALKING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THAN THE TRUMP WINS!!!!
"What's more annoying?"
Whichever one falsely claims I am a Republican cuz she got a piece of sand up her cunt.
Whichever one falsely claims I am a Republican cuz she got a piece of sand up her cunt.

So... wait, you're not?
Let's throw ourselves to the floor and have the vapors because Reason publkished things we don't like. Eleven years of our lives, wasted! Wasted, I say! *sobs* We donated! We are important, important people around here!
... and it's MLS who has the sand in her cunt. Sure. On the plus side, I bet she's got some Midol you can borrow.
Well, this went horribly wrong for you, Corning. Maybe some Triclosan would help keep that butthurt from getting infected.
"Well, this went horribly wrong for you, Corning."
Yeah I don't know how I could possibly recover from the onslaught of three idiots beating a strawman of their own making.
"I never said that! Strawman! You're stupid!"
If you're going to be a whiny cunt, at least you could put forth some effort. We do have standards around here, pal. Hive of scum and villainy, remember? Does that look like villainy to you? Nossir.
Let's see one more, and this time put your weight behind it.
Now kill the heads of the 5 families and we're good
"Have all Republicans lost their minds as badly as the Hit&Runpublicans;?"
I am getting that impression. They are stupid and prone to berzerking en masse.
"He thinks because reason and Fox are anti-Trump"
and
"What corning and some Trump supporters"
What? No mention of Sanders or the Tea Party. Instead you go right for the Trump connection?
You are an idiot please stop talking.
You're saying reason and Fox are using the same tactics as the Dems and the MSM because they went after poor old Donald. Boo-hoo.
It doesn't occur to you that possibly Trump deserves the treatment he's getting? Because he does.
So, no. I won't stop talking but you can fuck-off now, dummy.
I will not denounce who you want me to denounce for the reasons you want him denounced.
Take your culture signalling and communitarian bullshit and shove it up your ass.
Yes, my cultural signaling, that is really important to me. Thank you for reminding me.
I'd like to send you a signal but I suspect you're too dimwitted to read the obvious. But, hey, good luck you, darling, because based upon your comments here you surely are going to need it.
"Everything I sort of don't like for reasons I don't make clear is 'social signalling'!" /corning.
"Everything I sort of don't like for reasons I don't make clear is 'social signalling'!" /corning.
If you go back and read what sprang this off I mentioned three entities:
1. The unnamed someone who i refused to denounce
2. Sanders
3. Teaparty
From those three mentioned Little Miss House On The Prairie decided to call me a supporter of unnamed person and a Republican. Why not a Teapartier? or a Sanders supporter?
Remember back when Palin said Paul Revere warned the British and everyone called her an idiot....and then it turned out it is a historical fact that Paul Revere warned the British.
If I pointed out that she was right would you call me a Palin Supporter? Is it necessary for pointing that out that I first must denounce her before setting the record straight?
Fact is Mrs. Lemuel Struthers is a piece of shit for jumping to conclusions about me simply because I did not send out signals about my opinion of a certain someone before ridiculing SJW ad hominem against that certain someone.
I might be more convinced if I hadn't seen them give the same treatment to Ron Paul in 2008.
The treatment? You mean criticism of RP for his awful newsletters and other awfulness? Apparently 'the treatment' = enforcement some basic standards.
It's pretty fucking fun watching some of you circle the wagons around the absolute worst of the Republican establishment, tripping over each other in a mad rush to do so, then calling anyone who thinks you're a pack of fucking retards crypto-Republicans.
"Reason is for the status quo. All right then. Where does this kind of lunacy come from?"
Honestly after Lizzy's full "libertarian" defence of tax funding planned parenthood 'for her feelz of the wymyn" I can't really say.
But that aside one does not have to be for the status quo in order to join the dog pile tactics developed by cultural Marxists to defend the status quo.
When Scott goes out of his way to call Trump sexist (still wondering what the fuck that has to do with anything) I can only assume Reason has joined the useful idiots.
And yet, here you are.
"And yet, here you are."
God forbid I vocally lament that fall of Reason which I have come to and donated to for 11 years as it morphs into a mutant child of Vox media.
Yes. You should totally stick around and make sure we all feel your pain. That would be the productive thing to do.
Yes because the proper response to reasoned criticism is 'if you don't like it, leave ". Way to as always raise the quality of the dialogue there hamster
Honestly after Lizzy's full "libertarian" defence of tax funding planned parenthood 'for her feelz of the wymyn" I can't really say.
Do you mean when Lizzy pointed out that much of the public money PP gets is just Medicare/medicaid disbursement? Maybe you should actually understand the articles you bitch about FIRST before throwing a tantrum.
Do you mean when Lizzy pointed out that much of the public money PP gets is just Medicare/medicaid disbursement?
Are there libertarians on this board that wouldn't like to see Medicare/Medicaid go away?
Context matters
I even quoted Warty. here it is again:
"Reason is for the status quo. All right then. Where does this kind of lunacy come from?"
I put out doubt because ignoring all the abortion politics cutting government funding seems pretty libertarian to me and most libertarians and not cutting government funding seems pretty unlibertarian and status quo.
Then
I walked that doubt down "but that aside" explaining that reason may not be status quo but it sure was adopting SJW dogpile tactics like "useful idiots".
That is hardly a tantrum.
In fact at most the quote you used is flippant and peripheral to what I was talking about.
Do you mean when Lizzy pointed out that much of the public money PP gets is just Medicare/medicaid disbursement?
Medicare and Medicaid don't always need to be reference with a slash. I'd be stunned if any significant portion of PP funding comes from 65+ year old women.
Do you mean when Lizzy pointed out that much of the public money PP gets is just Medicare/medicaid disbursement?
Which is a red herring. She was critiquing the attempt to cut non-Medicaid funding. (I don't think PP gets much in the way of Medicare).
+10000
If you think Trump is a 'rebel' in any meaningful way then you are stupid.
It has been amusing to see Fox News and Reason Magazine join MSM in the past months in its application.
Not as amusing as pretending that this 'guilt by association' schtick is anything but derp.
"If you think Trump is a 'rebel'"
WHAT THE FLYING FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
What part of not denouncing a certain someone makes you think whatever evil enters your empty head can somehow frame me?
Take your pseudo-mindreading and shove it straight up your rotten asshole.
SOKKKONZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!
I can't believe the Botox isn't all over this shit.

Tiresome.
they eschew "traditional" touchstones of adulthood such as home ownership in favor of entrepreneurial ventures
.
But the President himself has wondered why there are not more young female and minority entrepreneurs boosting the tax rolls. It's a mystery.
Yeah. They'll look down upon conservatives as they attempt to engage in entrepreneurial ventures until they encounter the wall of progressive red tape, and then they might think again. Or not.
Hey! Wait a minute... when I said that everyone should pay higher taxes, I didn't mean me! I thought it was only going to be those redneck baggers! It's not fair!

I am so like NOT reading that book.
If you can destroy an economy (you didn't build that!) and then brainwash an entire generation into believing that you are the only one that can save them from the shit that you just created, you can get yourself a lot of power in the new biggest banana republic around. All hail el presidente, comrades!
What we should be doing is educating these young dingbats about how free markets and free minds work.
And yes, the Stupid Party is not up to that task. That's what libertarians are for.
And yes, the Stupid Party is not up to that task. That's what libertarians are for.
I'm eagerly awaiting the LP taking over Chicago, DC, LA, Detroit, etc., city councils.
That can't even be sarcasm. I don't know what it is.
I'm making a crack that those are cities where the Republicans are extremely weak and the Democrats have run them into the ground yet libertarian urbanites have been unable to do anything to fill the political vacuum.
Don't worry, Winston is just retarded and desperate to sound clever. He routinely impresses himself.
Impressive projection Cytotoxic.
You and your projection. Is it your favorite fallback or your only fallback when you got called out for the faux-clever twat you are?
You can't answer a factual statement and call me a retard. Impressive rebuttal, particularly from a guy who likes to claim he "wins" threads when getting into arguments with people. And a guy who falsely accused me of being a sock of Tulpa.
Your factual statement being what? That the LP's lack of dominance in Detroit and Chicago = no Libertarian Moment? Your factual statement isn't a 'statement' it's a really stupid argument.
It's a simple question. Why hasn't the libertarian party made advances in urban areas where the Republican Party is effectively dead?
If you were not such a delusional retard, that question would make you reconsider the idea that the white hipster yutes would be going right if not for the evil socons.
Most people in those cities are on the dole in one form or another, and thus going to be completely uninterested in libertarianism.
How many of those people are the yutes that Reason is desperately trying to appeal to?
How do I reech theese keeds?
"close-minded, racist, intolerant, old-fashioned, stuck in the 1950s,"
This is mainly just successful progressive propaganda.
If you look at actual Republican actions, this falls apart:
Republican southern voters have elected non-whites as governors and senators.
I mean, if I were working for the GOP right now, I'd have a meme like this:
In South Carolina white Democrats raised the confederate flag in 1861, and it took a Republican to bring it down. White Democrats raised it again in 1965, and now another Republican - a female minority, is bringing it down again.
In general, the Democrats want ethnic identity politics where you vote based on your skin color...this is essentially racist.
Republicans oppose this, so they are called racist, but look at what color-blind voting has done:
Jindal, Haley, Scott, Sandoval, Martinez, Cruz, Rubio,
Name a non-white Democratic governor or senator. Menendez?
and this is why you will see continued Black Lives disruptions, and good for them! Democrats support identity politics instead of color blind system and this is the logical result.
No amount of facts and rational argument will change how the left feels.
You say this is mainly propaganda but you only talk about the race aspect. There is a large portion of the GOP that thinks women belong at home and gay marriage is ruining America.
Do these republicans rent or own inside your head?
It's nice to see you guys disagree when I'm so used to having to turn away while you engage in your war-boner circle-jerk.
Um "hipster" and "millenial" are not the same thing?
Hipster is a subset of millenial.
Bing Crosby has a sad.
No it's not. The Vice founders are hardcore hipsters and yet are in their 40's.
Hipster. Beatnik. Whatever. Every generation has a new name for the same thing so they can claim they were the first to do it.
Except hipster isn't a new name...
They are the hep cats of the 2010s.
Gillespie is the same age as my mom and I'm on the elderly side of millennial. Just sayin. If Gillespie isn't a hipster, he owns adjacent property at least.
Yeah, I guess Cosmo Kramer was a millennial too?
No!
Gillespie is the Truckdrivin Neighbours downstairs

Though honestly considering the Coast he grew up on and his age he was probably listening to Sonic Youth and Dead Kennedys
Something hipsters would never do. Their fascination with the 80s musically strangely only touches on re-imagined soundtracks from 80s scifi action movies a la Kavinsky

You Know Who Else claimed teh yutes would take over and lead to a utopia?
I think we presume too much that each generation is stagnant in their political thinking. Life has a way of making you see things differently. At least in my case -- and I'm sure I'm not exceptional -- I started off as very left-wing as a teen/college kid. As I went out into the real world and started paying taxes, holding a mortgage, and needing to buy stuff like baby food and diapers, I morphed into a conservative.
Then 9-11 happened and we got two successive administrations who pushed shredding the constitution and intervening in every foreign civil war as the only way to "fight the terrorists," as well as successive administrations who didn't understand the very simple lesson I learned less than one year out of college: that you don't fucking borrow money to fund daily living costs and let your debt snowball!
I woke up one day and realized they are all just a bunch of crooks holding on to power and telling me how I should live. The R or D after their name is mostly window-dressing meant to fool the drooling fans of each team.
If an L ever gets into power, at least he or she will leave me the hell alone and will also understand the answer to fiscal questions is simple: "Fuck you. Cut spending!"
Personally what I find most annoying about Reason's millennial kick is that firstly it is predicated on the notion that the only thing stopping libertarianism are progs associating it with racist socons which is dubious since the hostility to libertarianism is far deeper than that. I've read quite a bit of anti-austerian types and they seem to really believe that any sort of budget cut, tax cut, deregulation and privatization are equivalent to genocide. Refuting that nonsense is going to take more than Weed, Mexicans and Ass-sex.
Secondly I find the notion of Reason has the pulse on modern youth to be utterly hilarious. Cuz Old Man Gillespie bitching about how yutes today aren't like the yutes of his day is sure to appeal to them.
"Personally what I find most annoying about Reason's millennial kick is that firstly it is predicated on the notion that the only thing stopping libertarianism are progs associating it with racist socons which is dubious since the hostility to libertarianism is far deeper than that.
Honestly think there is something to this but Reason picked the wrong millennials to poach. Millennial do have a strong civil libertarian bent and progs being progs invariably go against this sensibility.
Instead of selling themselves as premier civil libertarians Reason have chosen to mimic the progs in their shaming and identity politics bullshit hoping no one will notice.

Lizzy's and Scott's articles on Fox news and Trump to name the most recent. Or even more recent this video found in this article above.
But I think the other side is more lacking then this side is prevalent.
Namely they missed the boat with Gamergate, Redditrevolt and the broader conversation about social media and blogger journalism and how it is controlled and censored by the authoritarian left.
Not only has Reason been mostly silent but it failed to offer cultural libertarianism as an alternative and let the likes of ReturnofKings and Breitbart (and even Trump) take that position.
The millennial civil libertarian left is not listening to Reason they are getting their ideas about libertarianism from the likes of Sargon of Akkad and the Ralph Retort and they are describing libertarianism very differently then what you are I or Reason would describe it.
Instead of #FreeMindsFreeMarkets trending we got #cuckservative and it is a shame.
I've read quite a bit of anti-austerian types and they seem to really believe that any sort of budget cut, tax cut, deregulation and privatization are equivalent to genocide.
That's because government is the only thing standing in the way of the corporations enslaving us all. Corporations take, take, and then take some more. Government spending offsets corporate taking, so budget cuts are the equivalent of taking money from the poor and giving it to the rich. Tax cuts are also the equivalent of taking money away from the poor and giving it to the rich. Regulations are rules that keep predatory businesses from literally raping their customers and employees alike, and privatization again is taking money away from the poor and giving it to the rich. Remember that the economy is a zero-sum game. Every dollar that goes to a corporation must have been stolen from a poor person. Only government can save us from the corporations.
Except of course for the fact that the corporations control the government. But this is only because the government doesn't have enough power to control the corporations that control it. That's why the government needs more power. So it can control the corporations that control it. If that power is then used by the corporations that control the government, then we need to give more power to the government. Repeat ad nauseum.
it is predicated on the notion that the only thing stopping libertarianism are progs associating it with racist socons

'What words come to mind when you think of the Republican Party?' and it was words like close-minded, racist, intolerant, old-fashioned, stuck in the 1950s,
http://reason.com/archives/201.....or-go-home
What do young voters want? More than anything, a shot at working and thriving in a growing economy. Yet even though only 22 percent of Millennials thought "Obama's policies had made it easier for young people to get a job" and "only 29 percent thought they were better off as a result of the stimulus package ... Democrats held a 16-point advantage over the Republican Party among young voters on handling of the economy and jobs (chosen as the top issue by 37 percent of respondents)."
That's because young voters are turned off by the GOP's emphasis on tax cuts?ber alles and habit of embracing big businesses rather than scrappy entrepreneurs. They are equally turned off by the GOP's constant thumping on gay marriage, which more than any other social issue has emerged as a "deal breaker," or an issue that will cause a voter who agrees on everything else with a candidate to vote for his or her opponent. Abortion, immigration, even health care are less important in this regard, according to the CRNC.
And where does it say that "the only thing stopping libertarianism are progs associating it with racist socons"? You should probably stop now. Knowing you the responses will only waste more time and get dumber.
I see Cytotoxic can't read. He's clearly saying that the GOP would do better if they weren't so racist and socon and the millenials won't be put off by reducing the size of government. And all the times he has proclaimed the libertarian moment or that America is fiscally conservative and socially liberal. And notice that Brooks, no Socon or Hit'n'Runpublican said he couldn't really disagree with that.
No, you can't read as usual. Again: where does Reason claim that is the only thing keeping millennials from supporting the GOP?
keeping millennials from supporting the GOP?
He's pretty implicitly saying that if they get rid of the racist socons and start calling for spending cuts then they'll be okay since the former is a repellent and the latter is acceptable.
Hung up on one word while ignoring the overall point.
*to the tune of the Pink Panther*

Go away kid. The adults are trying to have a conversation. You wouldn't understand.
Nope still here. Still smarter than Winston and probably you.
The day you demonstrate being any smarter than a fencepost, there will be shit ton of really, really surprised people.

I will be one of them.

.
I don't particularly disagree with any of that. The real problem, which I see as fundamentally insurmuntable, is the education system. Even non-public schools are dominated by a curriculum based on the proposition that the government is the source of all good things, and any individualist philosophy is inherently wrong and counterproductive, if not evil.
The "Mexicans and Ass-sex" are already well addressed by the proggies, weed not so much but legalization of it seems not to be that big a deal for the millennials. It's when libertarians start with the "no free shit" stuff that the millennials are suddenly all "lol wut?"
I just find it tedious to see a incessant stream of boohooing about traitorous reason writers who can't or won't get their minds right.
Get your own fucking website, and publish whatever the fuck you want.
HEAR HEAR!
So you are a big fan of David Weigel's involvement in JournoList?
Or is this a new thing that only applies to now?
What changed if anything?
"What changed if anything?"
I will admit I have not been around much over the past year....seriously did something change?
Even better, instead of boohooing about other commenters, you could get your own website and only let people comment there if they don't boohoo. How bout them apples?
"If there is hope", wrote Nick, "it lies in the millennials".
Yes, that's exactly right. I think David Weigel is the greatest political journalist of the last twenty years. The magazine/website has gone to shit since he left.
DON'T TALK ABOUT LUCY.... heu, wait a minute?!
So we agree Reason staff is not off limits then or now regardless if they have a fake Alaska girlfriend or if they are a woman or if they are gay.
As to traitorous i would not make that claim. After years of libertarians and Reason Magazine being called sexist racist homophobes who eat poor children i think it is more in line with being epically stupid for Reason staff to start calling others sexist racist homophobes who eat poor children.
You Know Who Else said there is a choice between either a blabbering idiot "iconoclast" with terrible views or a corrupt establishment with terrible views?
Not Reason? You/Tulpa?
So you're back to accusing me of being Tulpa? Impressive arguing skills, there.
Its responses are limited. You must ask the right questions.
Jon Stewart?
Of course, some of the reasons these millennials think Republicans are, like, old and icky and stuff are:
-They, like, think corporations are people, man. They want money to corrupt our political process and they oppose common-sense campaign finance regulation
-They're against common-sense gun control
-They want corporations to be able to take away a woman's right to free birth control. Did you hear me? *Free* birth control!
-They think if some fundamentalist doesn't like gay people he can, like, refuse to bake a cake for a gay wedding and shit. Hey, if you don't want to serve gay weddings, go out of business, hater!
For libertarians to think they can win over people like that is like some middle-aged guy thinking he can comb over his bald spot, unbotton his shirt down to his belly button, wear some gold chains, go to the local college bar, and pick up some coeds.
Sad, really.
You had me until the last part:
--- some middle-aged guy thinking he can comb over his bald spot, unbotton his shirt down to his belly button, wear some gold chains, go to the local college bar, and pick up some coeds.
now that's harsh.
You hepcats have nothing over Maynard G. Krebs
Shorter version: since Ronald Reagan, Republicans have been using racism and homophobia to get working class folks to vote for "business Republicans" who are mainly interested in policies that favor the rich. Since millennials are less racist and homophobic than boomers, that's getting hard to maintain.
Rand Paul continuing his put to get dumped into the kiddie table debate next time.
Rand Paul: Income Inequality Comes From 'Some People Working Harder' Than Others
One wonders how he would explain congressmen and lobbyists being among the most wealthy of us.
That's not entirely untrue, but it sounds bad in a headline without qualifications.
There weren't any qualifications in the transcript of the interview, either. So it just sounds bad (and is utterly wrong in the real world).
Being born with ten million and turning it into a billion requires a lot less hard work than being born with nothing and turning it into $50K a year.
Being born with ten million and turning it into a billion requires a lot less hard work than being born with nothing and turning it into $50K a year.
Actually, I would strongly disagree.
$50k a year is a "just show up" job. That's about what the guys who work for the county make (at a place I work at and know some people). None of them have college degrees or are particularly ambitious.
Being born with ten million might get you in the door to starting a business that will make you a billionaire, but it's no guarantee that your business will do that. That takes a lot of hard work and luck, I'd imagine. It's a lot easier to be born with ten million, live a good life off the investment income, and still only have ~ten million.
That could be the stupidest thing that I am going to read today.
