It seems that almost all the males I work with (including my boss) are in the divorced/divorcing categories. We need to distinguish between consensual polygamy and patriarchal polygamy, though — if we’re talking about the latter, it does introduce problems (though probably not worse than serial monogamy as practiced among the rich today), but it’s also not analogous to SSM, and doesn’t deserve protection on those grounds.

Under consensual polygamy, for some rich old fuck to get a fourth wife, all three existing wives would have to agree. It’s not likely to result in a major problem, since most people wouldn’t even be allowed a second spouse.

Rauch is a conservative who has been (somewhat unsuccessfully) selling the idea that gay marriage wouldn’t mean de facto polygamy to conservatives. I’m assuming that his article in opposition to polygamy is largely because his credibility is on the line for those claims the second the first person starts agitating in favor of polygamy.

My point is that his article is written for people like you because he is ultimately sensitive to your concerns about the legalization of gay marriage in the US. At least in my experience gay men are more likely to have an explicitly open relationship than straight couples (rather than the man having “an understanding” with his wife who has no idea that they have an understanding), but straight women are more likely to have dabbled in some form of polyamory where multiple people are part of the relationship. I don’t think I’ve made a statement here one way or the other about my personal preferences on the legality of polygamy. My understanding of the ruling is that the logic used by the court necessitates the eventual recognition of poly-marriage, but that wasn’t a necessary outcome of legalizing gay marriage. I think Rauch was correct in his argument but wrong in how the justices eventually ruled.

Polygamy isn’t something I see myself getting involved in, but I support people having the best tools at their disposal to organize their personal/financial lives in the way most beneficial to them, so I default to supporting their cause if they take it up.

Trek needs a BSG style reboot. Not the exact style, but the general direction. Darker, more conflict-driven, more tailored to modern fears and sensibilities.

They need a Trek series on the Klingon-Federation war. An overwhelming force of brutal barbarians trampling over the more “principled” Federation, using their “principles” against them. The Federation having to come to some realizations about how the universe actually works, and having to re-equip their politics, philosophies, and starships to meet this new reality.

I’d watch that show.

I was actually referencing the TV shows, which, iirc (and I may not be) it’s been nearly a decade. I had another sentence in there about how I expected we’d see a new Trek show in production in the next couple of years, but wound up deleting it. Should have left it in for clarity’s sake.

The new movie was fun. Made me sigh, a lot (Capslock!Spock) but I admit to watching it with all sorts of geeky fervor.

I watched the first reboot, thought it was shit, and forgot about it. Watched it later and enjoyed it. But I still think it’s shit, and not “true” Trek.

And I am not against “dark” Trek either – hell, the average episode of DS9 is way better than the reboots.

And the better than average episodes of DS9 are just amazing. “In the Pale Moonlight” may be my favorite episode of Trek ever.
