UVA Sorority Sisters Ordered Not to Attend Frat Parties: 'Treating Us Like Children'
There is no good reason to impose antiquated, sexist, infantilizing restrictions on college students.

Yet more evidence that modern American college campuses truly are bastions of creeping Neo-Victorianism: The national organization governing sororities, the National Panhellenic Conference, actually ordered its 16 chapters at the University of Virginia to stay away from Boys' Bid Night last weekend. Bid Night is one of the biggest fraternity parties of the the year, and the NPC was evidently concerned about girls' safety, given that frats are often assumed to be hotbeds of sexual assault (although the most egregious example of this at UVA has been debunked.)
The NPC is a private club, and is within its rights to infantilize its members, I suppose. Still, it deserves harsh criticism for promoting the alarmist notion that all college girls are in constant danger of being raped, as well as placing restrictions on them that are fairly obviously sexist. I fully support the decision made by some sorority sisters to flout the decree, according to Bloomberg:
"They are treating us like children and punishing us for being women," said Whitney Rosser, a senior from Lynchburg, Virginia, and a member of Alpha Phi. "We're angry because we are being told we are not allowed to go out instead of addressing the deeper issue of why sexual assault happens."
The movement to prevent assault is now dividing women on college campuses. The sorority protest in Charlottesville evokes the late 1960s, when women battled college administrators for social and sexual freedom. The women's rights movement of that time helped end strict dorm curfews and curbs on interaction with men imposed to protect women's virtue.
The NPC's efforts are right in line with the message of a new documentary on campus rape, The Hunting Ground, which would have us believe that college women are antelopes in a den of lions. If the circumstances were actually as bad as the alarmists say, of course, telling women to stay indoors on party nights would still be a bad approach. I certainly wouldn't want to roll back 50 years of gender progress, even if the danger was real. But keep in mind that the resurgence of neo-Victorianism at campuses nationwide is largely due to bad numbers; at UVA specifically, a discredited story is to blame. There is no good reason to impose antiquated, sexist, infantilizing restrictions on college students.
In response to mountingly intrusive attempts to protect women from rape—such as affirmative consent, and UVA's new rules for fraternities—I've jokingly remarked, what's next, chastity belts? Now I'm worried that some college administrator is going to think I was giving advice.

Wait... So there's one?
Do they write the rules on pillow fights in nighties?
Two words, OM: Disciplinary committee.
You're welcome.
Did they light the grail-shaped beacon without permission again?
"And after the spanking, the oral sex."
Brave, brave, brave Sir Pro L!
Is THIS why there are no female libertarians?
I don't know, do women not like Monty Pyton?
I think you know the answer to that. dont' you?
I know women who like it, but I'm not sure how that works out in the general population of women. If they don't like it, maybe they need to lighten up.
Bad Zoot! Naughty, wicked Zoot!
Wicked, bad, naughty.
5 MP points docked.
[Hangs head in shame.]
That's why I usually check my quotes online before posting. It's saved me a few times (but it's also shown me how much useless trivia is stored in my brain).

The state doesn't have a monopoly on teaching victimhood.
But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg--isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!
...nice
That's from the documentery?
Why yes, yes it is.
This isn't over! No more fun of any kind!!
You fucked up. You trusted us.
No more fun of any kind!
Perhaps Rolling Stone could do a double secret investigation?
....too soon?
Question to Robby Soave.
Have you grabbed its motherfucking leg?
If yes, have to tweeted a pic to "Ms. Congeniality" Anna Merlan?
If not, why not?
It appears, Injun, that Soave has indeed grabbed its mf'ing leg. Every time Soave posts about anything frat related, Merlan and Erdely lose just a little bit of power and credibility.
BTW, Injun, do you mind my calling you Hiawatha? It's meant as a complement and also sounds kinda Indian (as in India), at least to me.
I don't mind at all, Tonio.
Erdely seems to have vanished by the way. I looked up her twitter account recently, and could not find a single tweet. She is in hiding, presumably waiting for lawsuits. I hope she is bankrupted.
Cool.
That's awesome news about Erdely.
That's hilarious, still the november 30 tweet about the WaPo article on her
Amazing. She was tweeting like 7 times a day and hasn't posted since November 30.
Wait a minute-sexist?
Here's a picture of the Board of Directors of the National Panhellenic Conference:
https://www.npcwomen.org/about.aspx
A bunch of self-hating women suffering from false consciousness? Or maybe the leaders of the Male Chauvinist Club in drag?
For someone named Rico Suave, the author of this post certainly doesn't seem "totally cool toward everyone and everything."
http://www.urbandictionary.com.....rico+suave
Dare I say it - maybe the leaders of the National Panhellenic Conference, who themselves were sorority sisters, know a bit more about sororities than Mr. Suave?
"Dare I say it - maybe the leaders of the National Panhellenic Conference, who themselves were sorority sisters, know a bit more about sororities than Mr. Suave?"
Dare I say it, maybe current sorority sisters (who are fully grown adults, I might add) know more about their own college than 55 year old women who attended school in the waning years of the Carter administration.
Since obviously these coeds are much smarter than, the powerful, experienced women who run the Panhellenic Conference, they should obviously sever their connections to that gang of old biddies, right?
Are you saying that women are by definition incapable of implementing a policy that's sexist?
No, just that's a wee bit less likely than if it was the Council of Male Chauvinists.
Uh, are sorority members obligated to follow orders from the national organizations?
Depends on the contractual relationship. And I think the members of the PHC are the sororities (either the national orgs or possibly their various chapters), rather than individual sorority members.
So is there a chain of command? I'm just wondering who suffers what consequences if one or more of the girls decides "fuck your orders I'm going to the party."
My understanding is that, at UVA at least, the fraternity/sorority charter is an arrangement between the school and the national organization. So, effectively, the chapter is at the mercy of its national organization and the school.
The stories I read were not clear on this, but apparently at least some sororities are organizing "mandatory in-house retreats" for the weekend to make sure none of their members get caught at a frat party. Whether that's to protect the members, the sororities, or both, I don't know.
The high cost of paying for friends.
Shelter in place!
Nice.
"...the NPC was evidently concerned about girls' safety...."
Sense Motive check: Roll d20.
+1 saving throw.
On modern American college campuses prostitution is legal, regulated, and widespread, and the use of opium, cocaine, and pretty much every other narcotic is also legal and widely available?
Who knew?
Now, HM, don't stop Mr. Suave, he's on a roll.
yeyeye Cat fight?
CATFIGHT!
I also thought House Bunny wasn't too bad, considering its genre and my low expectations. It all comes down to the writing- if the jokes are funny, the dumbest movie in the world can be good.
And no matter how great of a concept someone has, bad writing will sink anything. Prometheus, I'm looking at you.
"And no matter how great of a concept someone has, bad writing will sink anything."
A buddy and I arrived at the same thought over the weekend after discussing movies. We concluded that even with great actors and a good budget a movie with a poor script is likely to be a flop.
If the world made sense
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!1!!1
No, seriously-
If the world made sense, applications to UVA would fall by at least 80% for next year, and half the students currently enrolled would transfer to another school.
Also, every woman in those sororities would quit in protest.
Why are sororities ordering their chapters to protect themselves? Fraternities should be ordered not to rape.
Nice.
In response to mountingly intrusive attempts to protect women from rape
Wait- what?
TRIGGERED.
You ask me, the frat counterpart to this organization should have gotten ahead of the publicity and BANNED the sororities "for their protection." Give each brother a quota of 20 or so pretty non-Greek girls to approach for an exclusive invitation-only party. (I know there are problems with my brilliant plan, as those Greeks actually prefer other Greeks and need each other for their numerous civic and charitable activities blah blah -- but a dreamer can dream.)
"Fraternities ban safety-conscious sororities from their events, prey on unaffiliated women instead."
Does the NPC order specifically apply only to UVA? If so, how do they justify that? Has there been an outbreak of sexual assaults at UVA not counting the ones that were made up by rolling stone short-story authors?
I've been saying this since these stories popped up. The natural consequence of all these "Affirmative Consent" "Save me from rape" "You must protect our wimenz" nonsense is that College kids are going to be banned from performing any sex or drinking activities whatsoever.
This happens all the time when I'm dealing with my kids. "Daddy, he squirted water in my eyes. Make him stop." "No she wouldn't stop squirting water at me when I was filling up my watergun." The kids have learned that when they start asking me to police every aspect of their play activity, eventually I get fed up and they don't get to play that activity.
Since these college students are acting like kids, pleading with authorities to protect them from taking responsibility for themselves, it is only natural that the authorities protect them by assuming they are children who don't get to play with these toys any more.
Maybe it's time to homeschool college students, too.
I'm not sure it's the college kids at large demanding all this protection, I rather doubt it. Seems more likely a minority of activists demanding it on their behalf, and those activists aren't the ones who will suffer for it.
Now, might this eventually teach these young adults the dangers of letting a bunch of sjw's agitate on your behalf? One would hope.
Reap what you sow. You demanded we take you seriously when you claimed that 100% of all females are violently raped 10x a day every day for life. Ok then, stay indoors and be quiet. We'll keep you safe.
And this after a rape hoax? Good thing for the sororities it wasn't real. If it had been, they might have been forbidden to leave their rooms and attend class.
Wait'll Obama and his feminist brigade get wind of this.
On sexual assault:
I sincerely believe it all could have been so very different -- so much better -- between men and women. Maybe there's still hope. See:
"The Sexual Harassment Quagmire: How To Dig Out" http://malemattersusa.wordpres.....-quagmire/
It's a detailed look at what I think is the sexes' most alienating and destructive behavioral difference, which is responsible for much of what is called sexual assault of women.
This will be an excellent new element for a rape fantasy piece of erotic fiction like was perhaps cleaned up marginally by Erdely and alleged to be journalism by RS.
UVA_Rape-Story_fiction_contest_entry
The UVA rape contest story by RS will be a never ending inspiration for rape fantasies and writing contests.
Having a rape fantasy is normal for men and women and is not motivated by desiring to be raped and doesn't motivate rape.
Rape fantasies are normal and almost certain to occur. The new Neo-Victorian rules will only make rape fantasies stronger. These rules will titillate better fantasies about EXACTLY the type assaults these intend to prevent.

A guy meets a coed in the library and barely pays attention to her. She likes him and tries to get his attention, to no avail. They meet again at a party and they have sex. A week later, a week in which he hadn't called her, they meet again in the library. Once again he is standoffish. She is devastated.
Who raped whom in that scenario? Clearly she used liquor to get him to submit.
Modern feminism itself infantalizes women. Women are never responsible for their own actions that may contribute to things that may happen to them. Their actions are never up for scrutiny. In that light why is any of this a surprise?
