Viral Video of Harassed Drunk Girl Was Totally Fake—Can We Stop Now?

You may have watched this viral video featuring a young actress roaming the streets of Los Angeles pretending to be drunk and getting aggressively hit on by male strangers eager to take advantage of her. Based on this, you may have concluded that the world is a sad, fundamentally unsafe place for women.
You were duped! The video is fake. The scenario was staged; the men were told by the video's producers to behave that way, according to LA Weekly.
Of course it's true that some men do treat women unkindly, or are rude to them in public, or are even willing to harm them. In the same vein, Hollaback!'s viral street harassment video demonstrated that some men say creepy things to complete strangers on the streets of New York City.
But we should be more careful about interpreting every anecdotal story of someone being mean to someone else as cause for necessary and immediate action to prevent a widespread social ill. Sober statistical analysis is the best vehicle for attacking big problems, not shock and awe. For instance, even though these videos seem to portray an America that is very much a sexually hostile place for women everywhere, rape has actually decreased by more than 50 percent in recent years, according to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network).
It's important not to exaggerate our problems—or become convinced that our problems require draconian solutions—because of false—or in this case, staged—observations.

The men's behavior was "mean"? I took it more as "morally....suspect". But not "mean".

I've taken drunk women home o a few times to keep them out of trouble. One fought me then thanked me the next day.As I have said before, never have sex with a drunk chick,or be caught with a fat chick
What if she's both drunk and fat?
Then you're going to get one hell of a blowjob.
whether you want it or not
Here's something you never hear a guy say: "Stop sucking my dick, or I'll call the police!"

And that is the truth.
not if they use their teeth,I have had women who couldn't do it right

light? yes. gnawing? no.
Well, shit, LH, of course no beaver-teething.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: "Fat chicks are like scooters, fun to ride till your friends find out."
Nothing wrong with scooters.
Pam: And then he was like?
Cheryl: "You're a moped."
Pam: How'd you know? And what's it mean, anyway?
Cheryl: Mopeds are fun but you don't want your buddies to see you riding one.
Pam: Oh... I thought he meant I was fuel efficient. Only had ten beers.
Cheryl: Forties?
Pam: No... yes. Hence the shandy!
This has been my experience, yes.

Ha!
so he's a expert in fat chicks?I'm sorry BBW's (gag)
can't type today,may need a stout
You can never type. What the fuck?
not enough stout
There is never enough stout, my man. I shall, myself, be hitting the Rasputin in mere hours.
Troof. I'll take a stout or a porter over any other beer any day of the week.
Unless cider is an option.
Interesting you tossed in cider. I always down a couple of ciders before I manhandle a sixer of stouts. My fav cider is Crispin's Classic English Dry cider. Yum... my palate runneth over.
I've not tried Crispin at all. I'm sort of stuck on Angry Orchard, Strongbow, and Johnny Appleseed right meow.
A friend of mine mentioned that he got a "Snakebite" the other day with Guinness and Strongbow. I'm not sure what I think about that.
I find Angry Orchard to be too sweet and a bit insipid. I like cider to have a bite to it.
Absolutely. A cider with a bite proves its applehood.
All decent ciders there though I'm partial to a very dry cider. Redd's little 8% Wicked's are always in my beer cave even though they run a tad sweet for my cider tongue.
Snakebites are quite good. I recommend the drink though different flavors can be enjoyed depending on the stout used. I like mixing Storm Kings and Johnny Appleseed if I'm planning on sitting for a bit and it's early on the drinking session.
OSU and Browns game on TV this weekend.plenty of stout.Yes Browns, got a problem with that!
Look, man, the actors just dramatized what goes on *all the time.* If we could catch it on camera, we would.
We know that Nessie is swimming in the Loch. We just can't get this big critter to sit still long enough to get a picture of it.
It's telling how much these issues require gross exaggeration, misrepresentation, and lies to drum up support. How about we worry about things that are problems we can see without fiction?
Goddamn it! Some drunk Italian chick groped my drunk ass at a club last year... you have no idea how fucking horrible that experience was! Destroyed me for about 12 seconds. I also had to deal with a fucking hot country girl getting all up on me a few months ago! With ZERO consent she poked that tight little ass right into my crotch as my wife watched excitedly from across the room. Exhibit advanced sensitivity with those of us men who actually DO get fondled, groped, and danced all up on by the opposite sex in those horrid places called clubs.

/rural dive bars can be more awesome than the highest-rated big-city night clubs with those hideous bouncers
When you're a new face in a rural dive bar, unless you're ridiculously unattractive you're going to get some female attention.
Hence, the 'more awesome' part.
It gets even better if you are at the dive situation when a bachelorette party shows up.
I am not at all ashamed to admit that the bride took full advantage of my stroking hips that night on the dance floor. Dancing fucks up every goddamn rule known to propriety which tells you no feminist has ever enjoyed a dance floor. I literally almost blew a load right under the lights dancing with that hot blonde.
The drunker we got the nastier it got. I actually had the fortitude to disentangle myself because fucking in the bathroom was right around the corner and THAT I legitimately would have felt badly about due to the groom.
Dancing fucks up every goddamn rule known to propriety which tells you no feminist has ever enjoyed a dance floor.
I'm stealing this. God love ya, AC.
I love you also, Machine.
Irksome victim fraud.
"You were duped! The video is fake."
Why get hung up on insignificant details?
The narrative is true. It's consistent within itself.
It speaks with a true voice.
If you feel the pain, then how can the pain not be real?
I believe South Park has done some shows on how is's ok to lie for the 'greater good'.It was smoking and drugs I think.
Yeah, what these men need to see is future versions of themselves.
It's just that in South Park, the truth was that spending all your time smokin' out and playing xBox can turn you into a loser.
And in this version, the truth is that men need to stop being physically attracted women...
Wait! How can that be true?
But..but..the fact that the video was scripted doesn't invalidate the fact that rape culture exists because Bill Cosby has ravaged more women than Genghis Khan! I know this because the media is leading the lynch mob against him on an hourly basis! The fact that this is news has nothing to do with its close proximity to other "War on Women" narratives, nor would the Progressives in the media ever view Cosby's socially conservative views on problems in the urban Black community as a valid casus belli to justify a total war in which is reputation and livelihood are destroyed.
And, of course, what would be the consequences to Mr. Cosby's accusers if he could definitively prove that he was innocent of the charges?
Don't underestimate the reach and the brutality of the Cosby mafia family.
So, she'll wake up with an expensive Italian sweater in her bed?
I agree with that, but there is a deeper methodological flaw in the Hollaback! "experiment". By only conducting the experiment in NYC, they are comparing the range of behaviors of New Yorkers against some contrived ideal that neither exists in the real world nor enjoys consensus regarding whether it is an ideal at all.
Instead, the experiment should repeated in various locales. This would have the added advantage of demonstrating the premise of cultural diversity that no cultures are merely different and that none can be called better or worse than any other. I'd love to see a study of Hollaback! results in Copenhagen, Rome, Tokyo, London East End, Tel Aviv, Riyadh, Moscow, Detroit, New Orleans, Johannesburg, Tehran, and Mumbai, for example, that compares responses with NYC.
Have the Hollaback! folks ever released the full, unedited, ten hours of footage? Wouldn't be surprised if we found more to the story than suggested.
I see virtually naked, bikini clad women walking down the Strand in Manhattan Beach (Ca.) all the time--and nobody says anything to them. It wouldn't surprise me if they started out looking for aggressive assholes in this LA video and couldn't find any.
Also, having spent some time in NYC, and having family that worked there on Wall Street, they say you forget, after a while, that the rest of America isn't a shit hole like that, too. You start to think everybody lives like they're in NYC.
NYC is weird because it isn't as class segregated--people from all strata are using the subways and walking on the streets. I think cat calling kinds of behavior is something guys generally only do when they think a woman is unattainable for whatever reason. Class distinctions would make an excellent reason.
That's because it all takes place in the metro.
I'm going to throw out there, again, that it's different in LA.
Public transportation in Los Angeles is for illegal immigrants, who can't get a driver's license, and the homeless.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_UpLtGEWoY
At best, you're talking about severely skewed results from people at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder in LA. There aren't many people in the middle class on the bus or metro.
In NYC, you could easily find yourself sitting between a homeless person and an investment banker. Very few other places in the country where dressed up office chicks are walking the streets among people who hardly ever see the inside of an office.
So, you're going with the "moral deficit" explanation of poverty.
Got it.
Are you suggesting there's no correlation at all?
"So, you're going with the "moral deficit" explanation of poverty."
I don't know what you mean by that.
I'm saying that what happens on the streets of New York is in no way typical of the rest of America.
I'm saying that what happens on public buses in Los Angeles is in no way typical of the rest of Los Angeles.
Anecdotal, but I've never once seen the bankers, lawyers, or accountants that I deal with in my professional career cat call women, and I've worked in the finance districts of half a dozen cities.
The guys that I worked with in the delivery truck during college were known to publicly express their appreciation of the female form from time to time.
Like I said, I suspect a lot of cat calling happens when guys feel like a woman is inaccessible for whatever reason.
Class and socioeconomic status are some of the reasons why a lot of guys feel like women are inaccessible.
And if that's the case, then these women making these videos may be exploiting other people's lower socioeconomic status--and should probably be ashamed of themselves.
Maybe they should send a girl that's really well dressed into a really poor all girls high school and exploit how well that goes over the other girls, too?
Or Rome or Madrid. Talk to any woman who has traveled alone in Spain or Italy and they will tell you a young women traveling alone and it is swarthy guy feeding frenzy.
Quit enabling them.
Hollaback! from Mecca or it's a cheap parlor trick.
In Iran they throw rocks at attractive women.
no
As long as there is an affluent, educated progressive white woman out there who is outraged that society is not perfect, we shall NEVER STOP!
In my experience, drunk girls roaming the streets in mid-day are doing most of the catcalling. (as a former bartender and resident of a college town, not a noonday drunk)
I think the alt-text is misspelled. I think you were looking for "L-Y-I-N-G S-A-C-K O-F S-H-I-T"
The disgusting part of all this is that I doubt the people behind this feel the slightest bit of guilt or remorse about doing this. Hell, I have doubts they even care that they got caught. And, to make matters worse, most of their audience probably has no regret about falling for this bullshit. They'll only all-too-happily go along with the next fraud and make the same sort of excuses that many allude to here. Personally, I wish polite society would start moron-shaming these people.
From the article I read yesterday, the producer seems like an unashamed opportunist. I don't think he's interested in these issues, this was just a way to create a viral video. That appears to be a new career for some people: creating viral videos for their own sake, not creating videos to make a point or make entertainment that may go viral.
It doesn't matter though, does it? How many people jumped on the bandwagon and said men were horrible monsters based on it? They're the ones who need to be embarrassed.
Apparently, according to the Smoking Gun, most of the men thought they were in a student film of some kind rather than a 'real' viral video. Some are rather upset.
That was the impression I got as well (I think I read the same article). He does it because it generates attention and probably money somehow.
Personally, I wish polite society would start moron-shaming these people.
The problem is the most effective methods of moron shaming violate the NAP.
How does saying to those sympathetic to this "Geez, you really are a stupid fuck. I can't believe you were dumb enough to fall for that sort of thing. Have you always been this retarded?"
I'd add publicly. In front of multiple acquaintances.
But you can't scare people into submission with sober statistical analysis.
RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network).
Keep your hands off my incest!
I didn't even know this video existed in time to be outraged that it was fake. These "clever" "experiments" are tiresome.
"These "clever" "experiments" are tiresome."
It's the equivalent of old school Green Peace stunts, or the kinds of stunts PETA pulls off.
You can't control what people say in the media, but you can control what they talk about by creating spectacles for the media to cover.
Pussy Riot, Al Qaeda, PETA...they're all competing for eyeballs. Libertarians and people on the right generally don't operate that way, but they probably should.
About the only stage right thing like that I can think of, off the top of my head, is the open carry movement. Let's strap up, and go to the Starbucks in San Francisco--make everybody talk about gun rights for a while!
1) "decreased by 50 percent" compared to what? What year is the baseline (and why was this year chosen?), and is rape measured, reported, etc the same way as it was then?
2) I am assuming that this statistic refers to a specific number of years over which rape has allegedly decreased by over 50%, but it could just as easily be read as meaning that in recent years, rape has gone down by 50% every year when compared to the last year.
3) This statistic tells us something about an absolute change in amount of rape -- which does not provide us a basis to state something categorical about total number of rapes without knowing what base we are starting from. It could very well be true that America "is very much a sexually hostile place for women everywhere", and that the delta of rapes is negative.
This is not to say that I agree with the feminists on this issue, but we must be better about statistical literacy than they are.
All anecdotal evidence is fact, that is all you need to know.
This is not to say that I agree with the feminists on this issue, but we must be better about statistical literacy than they are.
My understanding of the title of the article was that it would be about a fake video of a harassed drunk girl, not an in depth analysis of the time series progression of rape and/or harassment in the United States.
I didn't look, but I assume that when the article said according to RAINN, and provided a link, more in-depth analysis could be found there.
IMO, statistical literacy has actual literacy, as well as some internet fundamentals, as a prerequisite.
I don't see the relevance of the link if it is not logically connected to the article's argument. If there's a link, I expect it to be discussed or to be logically connected somehow -- and if the point of the article is to point out that the video is a fraud, it is non necessary to link to an article discussing reductions in rape over an arbitrary time period. The same is true of any discussion of reductions in rape in reference to a claim about pervasive sexual assault; noting an already low incidence of such would be both necessary and sufficient to disabuse one of that notion, since the delta tells one nothing about the base one is working with.
The fact that one is on the internet does not mean that Jezebel-style interpretation of statistics is necessary or worth tolerating (especially when libertarians are supposed to be a little better at such than your average bear).
I don't see the relevance of the link if it is not logically connected to the article's argument.
This is a very different statement than;
we must be better about statistical literacy than they are.
And I don't agree with either of them.
There are many ways to 'Reason' other than strict statistical analysis and the strictest of data-driven methodologies require little 'reasoning' at all.
Unless you think the data they cited somehow refutes the assertion about America being a non-hostile place to live, you're either arguing trivialities and/or tautologies or suggesting that the author refute anything that you or anyone else could cram in under the umbrella of a null hypothesis.
You're being obtuse.
My point is twofold: 1) the link provided does nothing to affirm any of the points being made in the article, and 2) is being invoked with the authority of an analysis of data. This is exactly what places like Jezebel do: that is to say, fill their articles with a phalanx of links to make them seem more authoritative and well-read than they actually are, which upon further inspection are not particularly persuasive or even responsive to the data they are examining.
The author himself decided that the delta of trends RE: rape incidence is relevant in rebutting the claim that "America is very much a sexually hostile place for women everywhere"; it's his responsibility to indicate how this is the case. The fact that the opposing side has not assembled an argument to show that this claim is true is irrelevant to the matter; if it is the case that feminists have not assembled a case to prove their claim then simply noting this is what should be done -- responding to poor support for another's argument with data which does not support your rebuttal is useless, and defending this practice dulls our rhetorical blade.
Se my comment below - link to BJS stats that source main data showing *60%* drop in 'Sexual Assault' crime 1995-2010
there has not been a release of an updated data series (probably 2016); and i assure you that before they do there will be a convenient 'redefinition' of how they count 'sexual assault' a la how the CDC has recently promoted the concept. (see the survey at the end of the report for a laugh)
Because 'rape' is now a political tool to be wielded against institutions for the purpose of allowing greater interference and control by Federal Agencies.
The point of my comment below was to highlight that Robby shouldn't be sourcing statistics to advocacy groups that have ZERO actual involvement in collecting/generating the data, and have every incentive to exaggerate and misconstrue how it is presented.
Exactly.
This is in part what I was getting at wrt my #1 -- where are these numbers coming from, and why should we trust them to represent real-world data?
It is particularly galling since it is completely unnecessary. There are any number of figures or articles one could link to in order to establish that rape is not a universal problem for all women (who are all equally at risk), from information about the victims to information about incidence of sexual assault as compared to other crimes to sexual assaults mapped to geography or demography or a variety of other factors. A weak link to a decrease in sexual assault rates (without knowing what the original base is) does not ground this claim, especially when it reinforces an organization with several misleading statistics about sexual assault.
If you track the 'stats' that people cite, they increasingly ignore the actual criminal reports of sexual assault in favor of *Survey Based* studies which have self-selecting samples.
You couldn't find a less-legitimate way of trying to create a credible statistical estimate of the actual prevalence of 'unreported' sexual assault than to, say, ask a bunch of liberal-arts college students to volunteer info about 'shitty sexual experiences' they might have had.
Extrapolate from there to the general population! VOILA = Rape Epidemic
Never mind that in their new definition of 'sexual violence' that there's no difference between actual 'rape', 'had sex while drunk', 'your boyfriend stuck his finger in your butt' (my pinky slipped! and you loved it the other day?) and 'left you unpleasant voicemails/messages on Facebook'.

Knocks it outta the park. All these "social experiments" are a goddamn retarded waste of time. If these bleeding-heart concern trolls gave a whit for real human suffering, they wouldn't be blathering about it on the internet, they'd be doing something substantative to fix it. But they can't. And they won't.
"Shoshana is just the squeaky wheel who wants to be lubricated with your tears."
I'm not familiar with this brand of lube. What's the base?
What's the base?
Progressives who need something to be outraged about?
All these "social experiments" are a goddamn retarded waste of time. If these bleeding-heart concern trolls gave a whit for real human suffering, they wouldn't be blathering about it on the internet, they'd be doing something substantative to fix it.
Considering I've seen the "The Walk to Save the Ta-tas" and similar, I don't think
"The cat-call 5K to end breast cancer" would be brazen enough for them.
The thing is that actually caring about and facing real human suffering is hard. The world is horrible and thinking about how horrible it is will drive you crazy if you are not careful. It is also really hard to make the world any better. Actually trying to do something against actual evil and to stop real suffering is hard and often very dangerous.
These people are shallow and completely self absorbed. So they want no part of confronting real evil. Since they are totally narcissistic, the crave the moral validation and public approval that they think comes with fighting evil. Their solution to this is to ignore real evil and invent fantasy evil that is easy to confront and provides them with the attention and validation their egos demand.
"rape has actually decreased by more than 50 percent in recent years, according to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network)"
Oh, well if THEY say so, it *must* true.
Personally, i'm going to look to the government bureaucracy actually tasked with collecting and compiling the data on crime rather than an organization whose sole raison d'etre is to fundraise by shrieking 'RAPE' all day and promulgating statistics of dubious merit in the media
And that, ladies and scumbags, is how you do *rape culture* right.
You monster.
Don't you know that 110% of all college-aged students between the ages of 18-24 are raped every two minutes?
Here's something I've been wondering--Shoshanna's catcalling video took place in the same city that Rumer Willis felt safe enough to wander around topless in?
And wasn't there, in that same city, not long after Rumer's walk, a big 'freethenipple' demo? And didn't a whole lot of women go topless to protest for their right to go topless any time they wanted--i.e. not in a huge group of people--in this oh-so-dangerous-for-women city?
Something just isn't clicking.
