WASHINGTON — President Obama will ignore angry protests from Republicans and announce as soon as next week a broad overhaul of the nation's immigration enforcement system that will protect up to five million undocumented immigrants from the threat of deportation and provide many of them with work permits, according to administration officials who have direct knowledge of the plan.

This is a smart move on Obama's part, and might ensure the Democrats the Hispanic vote, or at least a large part of it, in the future.

Most of these "illegals" are not criminal types, but left Mexico because of the drug cartel violence there. Once they get here, most of them will do jobs others won't do, and they work very hard.

What really needs to happen is for the U.S. Government to make it easier for non criminal immigrants to legally come here. As it is, a normal process takes years and years.

The border itself needs to be sealed and militarized against criminals, and the non criminal people from Mexico and places south should be able to enter legally through the existing legal Ports of Entry.

Finally, all Hispanics now in the states illegally should be issued work and other permits, and made to pay taxes. All criminals need to be deported back to Mexico (The United Mexican States being the official name of that country).

These are our neighbors (for better or worse) we are talking about. The Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 has come home to roost.

The libertarian argument is that borders are arbitrary and statist. Yet, backing this argument with myths is the same sort of thing progressives do.

And while most may be perfectly law abiding while here, what about their children or the next generation of them? Hispanic men are incarcerated at three times the rate of whites and only behind blacks in that regard.

Corporations care because they can use the extra slots with 'reform' to bring in skilled workers. Some want the laborers from down south, but the big money is elsewhere.

And there are plenty of Americans who will end up competing for jobs with these people on both ends of the spectrum.

That actually hasn't been what I've experienced. I think it's more likely that the immigrants will increase the supply of low end labor and thus lower the cost of low end wages. The natives will find it more economical to go on welfare, get disability, take early retirement, collect EITC, food stamps, etc.

So technically, the immigrants will be working, but government tax transfers will go up.

Had you read my original comment correctly, you would see that I believe that the border with Mexico needs to be sealed, and then selected immigrants can come in at the Legal Ports of Entry.

This issue could have been resolved some time ago. Must be that the drug business is so fucking lucrative that just about everyone has been paid off, and thus politicians allowed an essentially Open Border, while keeping up the farce that The Border Patrol really does protect us from illegal immigration. See the documentary "Print the Legend" to see just how full of shit the argument by tech execs about not being able to find talent in the US is. here you have two start-ups making desk-top 3D printers. They are all staffed by Americans - no obvious H-1Bs in sight. They are mostly white males with some Asians in the tech jobs. As the company expanded jobs were opened manufacturing and you started to see more minorities.

The only reason for H-1Bs is to fill shit tech work slots like "software test" with people making way less than what it takes to get a real programmer. Or for "quality engineering" jobs that the company needs for compliance with agencies like the FDA but the company doesn't really want to pay an Electrical Engineer to do that work.

Sorry but that's just bullshit. I can tell you that about 20% of my hires have been native-born Americans, because there simply were not that many qualified applicants and native born was a definite minority.

Grad school is relatively hard and being a business major or lawyer is much easier, so why not follow the path of least resistance with the highest payout. That's what Americans are doing when they're not getting Art History degrees and living in their parents' basements.

Now that's not to say that I think it's worth it to outsource everything to India or Thailand or wherever. I haven't been that impressed with those who stay behind, but the ones who come here for an advanced education are definitely a much appreciated and necessary addition to the workforce.

And I call BS on your call. The company I worked at had no problem finding US talent. All the H-1Bs we hired were for crap "software test" work that anybody with an AA in CS and some training could do. All the R&D and engineering was done by US citizens in the medical products field.

The only reason companies say that can't find the talent is all the BS they put in those phony ads they show to the government.

WE are looking for a candidate with 10+ years in RF, 5+ years in advance cryptography, and 5+ years in optics.

Then they hire some H-1B from some diploma mill in India.

I sorted through them and for every open req I had I could count on one hand the number of native born candidates that made it past the initial screening.

Go to the grad schools and look at their populations. Without immigrants they would be ghost towns. Without a doubt we need H-1B's.

You're making some assumptions there. First, Obama is apparently going to protect people who are already in the country, not encourage more people to come in. He can't up the quotas for legal immigration on his own. And many of these people are already working even without work permits.

Second, even if more immigrants make it into the US due to this policy, you're assuming they will be able to find jobs. A work permit doesn't do you much good if there are no unskilled jobs available due to terrible labor policies (minimum wages, work hour restrictions, etc.)
