Fears of Missing Jetliners in Libya

Possible thefts following takeover of Tripoli airport

|

Islamist militias in Libya took control of nearly a dozen commercial jetliners last month, and western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa.

Intelligence reports of the stolen jetliners were distributed within the U.S. government over the past two weeks and included a warning that one or more of the aircraft could be used in an attack later this month on the date marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, said U.S. officials familiar with the reports.

"There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing," said one official. "We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes."

  1. “Missing”?
IOWs the US satellites can’t see them? Are there that many large hangars available to hide them?

    1. This isn’t an episode of “24”. We don’t have global real-time 2 meter resolution coverage of the entire planet, and we don’t redirect a billion-dollar satellite with a limited fuel budget based on a hunch. You have to actually know where to start looking.

      1. So nobody’s worried enough to spend any assets on it.

        1. They gotta keep people on edge.

        2. An assumption on your part. Perhaps you could explain how a fucking overhead satellite is going to read the tail-numbers off the sides of the aircraft? How is a satellite going to examine the aircraft to see if the tail-numbers are correct? All a satellite can do is produce an overhead image for a person to interpret. That imagery analyst will be able to say “Yep, that’s a B737-800/900; one of hundreds”.

  2. Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job I’ve had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go? to tech tab for work detail
