Obama on Iraq Airstrikes: 'This Is Going to Be a Long-Term Project'

Meet the new war, same as the old war?

President Obama said on Saturday that the airstrikes and humanitarian assistance drops he ordered last week in Iraq could go on for months, preparing Americans for an extended military presence in the skies there as Iraq's leaders try to build a new government.

"I don't think we're going to solve this problem in weeks," Mr. Obama told reporters before leaving for a two-week golf-and-beach vacation on Martha's Vineyard. "This is going to be a long-term project."

If "Bush Lied, People Died" because of an Arab dictator bragging about his WMD capability and ability to reach US targets, then surely a President re-engaging in a war he ran against to protect "American interests" in Iraq from a terrorist organization who hasn't even claimed to have any interest in attacking us, much less any capability, would be worth some serious protesting, right?

Otherwise, one might be led to believe that all that protesting was motivated by something other than a genuine concern over an aggressive US foreign policy, something perhaps more crass than a desire for peace or even simply a reluctance to waste American blood and treasure in nation-building. So I'm sure we'll start to hear full-throated protests from Code Pink and so forth. Any minute now.
